Rachael's Cafe is the standard other cafe's should all aspire to. As an extensive traveler, a town with a decent coffee shop will win my heart faster than any other amenity. From all I had heard about Bloomington, I knew there would be a café to suit my needs. Rachael's Café has everything I look for in a coffee shop: good coffee, free wifi, accessible plug-ins, an artistic atmosphere, a friendly staff, space, interesting music and food selections other than just pastries. Rachael herself was cooking up some vegan options for the afternoon crowd. After hours of browsing the news, writing, photoshop-ing and emailing, I still find myself happy to be here in this space. Tonight is a poetry reading and tomorrow Tommy Ramone from The Ramone's will be performing. Right now, there is a fellow customer who felt compelled to jump on the piano and play us some mellifluous melodies and even sing. Now that I finally know my yelp password, I'll be more diligent about posting reviews about the places that capture me around this great country of ours. This is the place that inspired me to finally admit it and click that "I forgot my password" link.

I like the place, and I like the "vibe." But I hate the coffee. Last time I was there I just could not finish it (I got a latte). I may come back here from time to time as the place is great to sit at (love the big windows), but I will stay away from coffee. I really wanted to give Rachael's more stars, but if a cafe serves terrible coffee, it is very hard.

This place is horrible. A friend and I went in to order a chai in the middle of the day when there was NO ONE there. We both ordered a small chai and then waited by the end of the bar for our drinks. We were rudely told to go sit down, a clear indication that we should get away from their counter. We went and sat down for TWENTY minutes before one our of chais was brought out. During that time the incompetent barista proceeded to half train a new person and start a bunch of random tasks that did not involve making the only customers in the cafe's drinks. My chai was second and it was disgusting. For some reason they blended it, no indication of that on the menu, and I'm pretty sure they forgot the chai. It tasted like icy milk chunks; I had to throw it away. The barista was rude and unapologetic for the delay. I worked in a cafe for 5 years, there are 3 steps to making an iced chai: 1. put ice in the cup, 2. put chai in the cup, 3. put milk in the cup. It should take two minutes, max. Maybe 3 if you want to blend it (gross). In short, DO NOT go here. It sucks and I would never give them my money again. Brave the hipsters and go to Soma, at least it's worth your cash.

I'm pretty much always happy when I'm at Rachael's. The coffee is good, the wifi is free and speedy, and the atmosphere is artsy & eclectic without screaming "I'm trying to appeal to the college crowd!" (I'm looking at you, Soma). There are good seating options (couches and a variety of table sizes). Also, Rachael is a sweetheart. I haven't been here for evening cultural events yet, but it's only a matter of time.

Definitely a coffee place. Not a lot of other options. The vibe inside is great though. Lots of comfy furniture. There is a stage too so I assume performance occur often. We were there during a big rush and the staff seemed overwhelmed but still friendly.

Rachael's is as cozy place as you could want. It's right next to a laundry, so I always come here while I wait for my clothes to dry! The food and coffee are pretty good, and there is much care and attention put to making this a homey place. Rachael is the sweetest southern Indiana belle you can imagine. The only thing that would make the atmosphere better is some good music played more consistently.

You are going to get a wide range of reviews for a place like Rachel's. In part it depends what you are looking for. And in part I think the evenings will be different from the daytime when Rachel is there. I embrace the "weird ambience" one reviewer mentioned because the welcome is so warm. The clientele is as eclectic as the decor and fun to be around. I often go for lunch as it is near work (though I have perhaps 24 other options just as close if you know Bloomington). I have always enjoyed Rachel's cooking. I ordered the Venezuelan Chicken Salad, perhaps for a year of lunches and realized I was stuck. Now I just say, "Whatever you want to serve me." I have never been disappointed or failed to finish and enjoy my lunch. If you like the big chains this may not be for you. If you enjoy the unusual and support Bloomington Independent Restaurant Association, try Rachel's, you will probably be glad you did.

We've booked independent tours for plenty of artists. From small to bigger independents like Tha Alkaholiks, Cali Agents etc. On this particular tour we had booked here for a smaller group out of Chicago, IL. The deal we had with them was finalized (terms they requested) and we agreed to. We then get an email that they have a new person handling booking. They then recanted on the deal agreed upon after tickets had been printed and promotional materials as well. They simply said we're backing out, here's the new deal if you don't like it then no show. The way it was handled by them specifically Joe Savarino was very unprofessional and I did inform them that I would do my part as a booking agent to give them a rating fitting to how they handled our situation. This venue is not recommended. It's very disorganized. Ray 408INC Booking booking@408inc.com

Overpriced food and drinks, long waits, and a weird ambiance. I had a barista forget to get me the drink I ordered until I reminded him about it 15 minutes later. Another time I had to wait 15 minutes for a hot tea because they were so understaffed. I ordered a bagel once to find that it was some generic bagel pulled out of the freezer. The large windows are covered with plastic so if you want to be able to look outside, you can't. The whole place just feels disorganized and dirty.

I've been here twice - nice iced coffee and friendly service, comfy couches, and the quiche was DELICIOUS and came with a nice salad. I've heard the events they have here are fun. Really cool local joint.

Rachel's Cafe has great coffee, coffee drinks, and light noshes like quiche & cookies. We tried the weekend omelet bar, and decided it needs work. The omelet themselves were great-- freshly prepared and good ingredients. What was strange was that the toast that came with it was almost like Wonder White Bread, the kind that can be easily compressed as thin as paper. The Smuckers Jams/Jellies that came with were also past-prime. Then there were home fry-like potatoes that hadn't been properly prepared, giving them that dense, rubbery feel, uncooked feel, although the seasonings were good. The price was just $6.95. With a could of small improvements, they could be stellar and a very high value. Rachel's also has an enormous variety of entertainment; look for online schedules of what's when. It's a bit anarchistic, but fun.

I really expected something different from this joint. I went in a few hours ago to get a coffee to go, got it in a beer glass, no biggie maybe the cashier didn't hear me. So I was handed a to go cup filled about 2/3 full. whatever, just get me out of here I have a paper to write. The cashier tried to assist me to the best of her ability, she said they didn't have ice but they had some coffee in the fridge. I appreciate that she worked around a situation to help a customer (no ice? how does that happen? There were maybe 10 people in the whole place) The coffee was seriously the WORST coffee I've ever had. Someone that reviewed before me commented on the big windows. This place looks like a sauna from outdoors. I drive by & always wonder what is wrong with this place. I wish they could find a better way of insulating the place instead of using plastic. Tacky, tacky, tacky. Maybe I just got stale coffee, I dont know. I want to give this place another shot, my co-workers LOVE Rachaels & I want to experience whatever they see in this place.

A new cafe that just recently opened in Bloomington almost across the street from the post office. The IDS did a great job reviewing it, so I'll just throw in my two-cents. The decorations are fabulous, there's a ton of original art, it's colorful, and it's unique. Perhaps they have a wait staff during busy hours, but they didn't when I got there at 2:15 on a weekday. Instead, I just walked up to the counter, got the recommendations from Rachel herself (a blond-wigged transvestite, just to warn you), watched her put it together on a plate and sat down with my food. I had a wonderfully crispy, crunch and complex chicken salad accompanied by a great pita and awesome homemade salad dressing. The dressing is somewhere between a hummus and spicy Thai peanut sauce, it's got a kick, and it's delicious. It seems like there are always two or three specials every day--whatever they feel like making that morning or the night before. They also offer create-your-own sandwiches, muffins, brownies, scones, and other coffeeshop-esque food items. All in all, it's a very nice place to sit and relax, very friendly, moderately priced, and very yummy. I shall return.

Okay. I've been here a lot more times since my first review and, while I still like the place a lot, there are few things that make me want to knock the place down a few stars. First: They need more outlets and/or extension cords available for laptops. I mean, hooray for free WiFi, but what's the point if students and other patrons have to run on battery power until their batteries die? The times I can't get an outlet, I know I don't stay quite as long (and subsequently don't buy more coffee/food/beer) as I would otherwise. Second, they never seem prepared for it to get busy, even when they have larger events scheduled. I'm okay with laid-back service during slower times (although often the clerks disappear in the back kitchen area for big chunks of time so you have to yell out that you want service), but if you are scheduling bands or other events, be prepared for people to show up. Every time I've been here for a sizable event, the service is unbearably slow and a huge line forms. Speaking of, the clerks tend to seem annoyed when shows get booked. I just witnessed a barista tell one of the bands who was scheduled to play to "quiet down" while sound checking and to be careful not to play too loud tonight. Um, four indie pop/rock bands are scheduled to play. Why are shows being booked here if the bands are going to be told to be quiet? They have drums and amps, etc. They are BANDS. It doesn't make sense. Man, I wish Bloomington had more decent venues for original music where music was the real focus. Because local places like this that try to run both a cafe/restaurant and a music venue just aren't cutting it. Third: It is always really warm inside. To the point that the baristas acknowledge it and complain about it, whether it's winter or spring. If this is a known issue, stop complaining about it and do something to fix the situation.

A couple of friends of mine had a band and were looking for a place to play in Bloomington between shows in Indy and Louisville. Most places they called were booked already (Bluebird, etc.) and I suggested they try Rachael's since they sometimes had bands there. So they successfully booked themselves at Rachael's one evening, which they were to share with another musician coming from Ohio. As it turned out I was the only one to come for the show. The two guys working there had already informed the musicians that they wouldn't be performing because it wouldn't make sense for them to be open if they weren't going to sell anything. This was entirely unprofessional and they should have let them perform. They had their gear unloaded already. It is not the responsibility of a band to "bring" an audience and if Rachael's has any doubt about having an audience on a given night they shouldn't tell bands they can come play in the first place. After the fact I overheard that Rachael herself is the most disorganized owner ever, doesn't keep up with the books and so forth. So I guess the whole place is a mess.

I like this place for the most part and Rachael is pretty awesome! I don't like to come when bands as the space really isn't acoustically well designed and that bothers me somewhat. That said they allow for many organizations to raise money for charities and the staff is awesome to talk to. I would say most things about this place including food and coffee are recommended. However your first trip you MUST have the hot coco even if it's 90 degrees outside!
