I haven't been there all that recently, but when I was, I do have to say that it was seriously one of the best burgers I've ever had. Me being a wimp just gets your standard cheeseburger, but it is made absolutely top notch. That garlic burger described sounds delicious though. Try it with the cottage fries on the side (if you don't specify your side you just get chips)...you definitely won't be disappointed by these spicy, tasty, round little fries!!! Great place!

A decent place. The burger I had was OK (something with jalapenos). My date's burger was delicious though; it was the garlic burger (or something like it).

Cute place to eat in the heart of Bloomington near IU. I met a friend there before a business meeting for dinner and it was dead. Surprised because its a well-known IU place, however the weather wasn't so pleasant, probably why. Went with the much-respected Cyndiana burger -- definitely caught me off guard at how well avocado goes with bbq , bacon & cheese. Fries weren't anything spectacular, I was told I should've gotten the special seasoning fries. Service was fast & sweet, and the ambiance is definitely IU+ wooden bar+ kitschy.

Looking for a food place late one evening on a Sunday and found only Opie's open ... so we gave it a try. Basically a sports bar with a number of large big-screen TVs, so you can keep up with your sports. As to food - it was ok. The mozzarella sticks were the only a standout. They seem to have the fry thing down, as most of the food was French fried stuff. Chicken wings were large, but a bit on the fatty side instead of meaty. The whole place seems to be run on a shoestring ... not much ambiance ... bathrooms were old and dumpy. Service was decidedly lackadaisical. But for a Sunday night when not much else is open, this will do just fine for a bite to eat.

GREAT burgers. It was a fun place to eat for the adults and the 3 kids in our party.

FREE PARKING HINT: Now that I no longer live in Bloomington, I can reveal the secret parking hint. If you go West on Kirkwood past Opie Taylor's, there is drive-thru for an abandoned bank that you can turn into, right accross from the Buskirk Chumley. You can park anywhere in the drive-thru as long as you aren't obstructing the path for other cars, and you will not get ticketed or towed. Also, the food is great, and the staff is awesome, but whatever. You already know that.

Again, not totally sure where all these negative reviews are coming from, because among my friend group, Opies is a staple of our restaurants-we-visit-regularly. We go there, we can get seated basically immediately (I think once we had to wait five minutes, egads!), the waitstaff is always at least mostly-attentive, and the food is delicious. But let's start from the beginning: The decor is woody, which I can appreciate because it makes me think of a pub, which really, Opie's is basically a sports pub, so that's not shocking at all. Lots of IU decorations, which...it's a sports pub, right off IU campus, what do you expect? The waitstaff as stated is mostly attentive. There has been a time or two where getting a refill has been like dragging myself without supplies across the Sahara, but those also tended to be big game nights (because my friends and I are so out of the loop we have no idea when games are locally, when really if we were proper townies we would) where the whole place was so overcrowded that I have no doubt that they forgot our relatively quiet table in lieu of the louder drunken tables around us. Thus, I'm happy to excuse these few times, especially since it's like...out of the 30 times I've been here, it's been three times. 10% isn't bad. Now for food/drink: I gotta give a shout out to their sweet tea, which always tastes supremely fresh and is perfectly sweet. I fully admit I've never tried a burger at Opie's -- I was raised on a beef farm, so I regularly avoid getting a burger pretty much anywhere I go because of beef/steak overload when I was a kid. I always get the Lombardi Chicken, which is delicious; the chicken is always perfectly fried, the packer sauce is a spicy/sweet honey mustard, the bacon always perfectly crisp. My friends, however, always get a burger. One friend tries a new one each time, and always seems to love them more and more. Another always gets the Teriyaki burger, and regularly sings praises to it. And my third friend who accompanies me on these excursions would probably beat me up if I didn't mention the Cajun -- which is, honestly, his favorite. The beer selections aren't the best, but they include Upland Wheat Ale which is my homeboy, so I don't mind at all. We all love the, I believe they're called, buffalo fries, which are always hot, crispy, and perfect for dipping into some ranch or ketchup. Over all? Opies is a fave of mine. I've eagerly recommended it to people who are just in town (and have gone with them and achieved good food and service). People really enjoy it -- especially those who go for burgers or chicken. We're going there today after a friend gets off work, and warily I'm going to step away from the Lombardi Chicken to try something new. Wish me luck!

Right there on the courthouse square in Bloomington you'll find this local gem. Great spot for lunch or casual dinner. The only downside is the local parking meter issues. All spots on the street around the square are metered. They do take debit cards, but still, you'll probably have to pay to park, so bear that in mind. As for food, Opie's is a burger and sandwich place. They know what they are and they don't try to be what they aren't. That's a good thing. So don't come looking for pasta, burritos or wraps, just good burgers, sandwiches, soups and salads. Went in on a Thursday night about 6, seated right away, and then pondered the menu. Our server told us about the soups and specials. I went with the popular Cyndiana Burger. Very good choice (thanks Alex W.) Very tasty and I also liked that the burgers come from the Butcher Block here in Btown, so the burger is high quality to start with. Add bacon, cheese and avocado and you have a winner. I opted for the buffalo fries. They have a little kick but not overpowering. You can get ranch to take the edge off, but I didn't think that was needed. But I prefer them over standard fries. They are also cut round, not long, if that matters to you. They have recently added a Philly Cheesesteak made from Ribeye, which I would have considered, but they were out of it... so sounds like I'll be looking for that next time. Also there are several burger choices and chicken choices which are appealing, so you could come here several times and have many different burger experiences. Good service, good food, local spot and supports other local businesses... a winner all around. See you again soon!

Been coming here since 1997. Love the basil burger, awesome direct no frills customer service. Mozzarella sticks are the best!

I've been to Opie Taylor's several times (always been good and enjoy the variety of burgers) and always left satisfied but this last time was a disappointment. I ordered a blue cheese and bacon burger and the patty was way too well done, there were two tiny, thin strips of sad bacon and about a teaspoon of bleu cheese it looked like someone threw on as an afterthought. Thinking about it now, it should've been a first warning when you go to a burger place and they don't even ask how you want your patty cooked. I guess I've just grown used to Bub's where a bacon bleu cheese burger is a thick patty, with multiple strips of thick cut bacon and a mound of bleu cheese but this was just a sad burger all round. The buffalo fries were awesome though and service is always quick and good! Anyway, sad to say that next time I'm in Bloomington and wanting a burger I'll be headed to Nicks or Bubs instead or I'll just stick with a plain old burger and american cheese.

Only thing I have tried here is a cheeseburger and I can say it is good. Buffalo fries are great, they are like french fries in the form of a potato chip. Only have ordered from here so I can't comment on the in-dining experience. Definitely would recommend the burger and fries though.

I used to love Opie's a little bit more...Had a bummer time there recently. We had terrible service there and then they brought us the wrong the food. I said ok, I will eat it anyways, and then another worker brought the right meal and the waitress waved her away and said "She's fine with this" My husband stopped her and asked her if that was my meal-she said yes but she thought I was fine with dish she had brought :( The food was cold. And my companion was also brought the wrong meal and charged for it. I had a couple great meals there, but this service was an all time low.

Burger and fry joint located just of the square. Good place to catch a game on the numerous TVs. Buffalo fries are not to be missed.

This was my favorite place to go in the late 90's when I was an undergrad and it was located near the Bluebird. Since then, it's moved into the spot next to Malibu on the square, and something was lost in the transition. It's an alright place, but the burgers aren't as good as many places in town. I still love their chili, though. Beer selection is pretty poor. Prices are decent. Service is generally pretty good.

Great food and awesome experience, everyone has to try Opie's Indiana Tenderloin and their wings, I can't wait to go back there.

A large group of us stopped by for lunch on Friday and I have to say, I was way less than impressed. First of all, after the waitress took our drink orders and brought us our drinks, she never came back to take our order. We waited...and waited....and waited..until finally we asked ANOTHER waitress to find our waitress to take our order! Then, the food took forever. I'm not too upset about that, though, since burgers do take a while to cook and we were a large group. What I'm not okay with, though, is that most people had cold sides (fries) and that my $12 salad was pretty awful. I ordered the buffalo chicken salad and there was not a single piece of chicken on that plate that tasted like buffalo sauce. Instead, it tasted like black pepper. Overwhelmingly. Boo.

Not the greatest vibe, but I was very happy with my food. Great burger, and great mozz sticks. Service was decent.

Tried this for the first time a few months ago and was immediately ashamed that I hadn't had it sooner. Pub style menu, but that's never a bad thing. The buffalo chips are my personal favorite menu item, though I wouldn't mind it if they were a little spicier. The service has been good each time that I've been. The only complaint that I have is that the seating could be a little more comfortable. I've never spent an extended period of time in there, so it's never been that big of an issue. Regardless, you should give them a shot if you're in Bloomington. The food is just amazing.

I'm bumping Opie's up to 4 stars. My last meal there was *really* good. And I really like that it's a local place with down-to-earth, friendly staff. Their beer selection could use a little work -- lots of the crappy, football beers, with only one or two decent ones...usually Upland, which works fine for me. I'm pretty much over the "charging extra for fries" -- because honestly, their burgers are so good, i don't often have extra room.

i like the burgers here (but i also think bub's is better). i haven't had much else here. servers are a little more preoccupied with conversation and whats going on on their phones than with actually, you know, serving. that being said, the burger really is damn good.

My wife and I used to visit this place when it was located near the Bluebird a few years back. After it moved, it seemed to lose something food-wise, so we just stopped going. A couple of weekends ago we decided to go back just for old time's sake. I'm glad we did. The food quality is as good as I remembered, although I miss the Cajun chicken sandwich that used to be on the menu. In it's place, I have two new menu favorites: the Cajun bacon blue burger and the best damn barbecue sandwich. As almost anyone will tell you, the burgers here are among the best in town. When you add Cajun blackening spices, smoky bacon, and creamy blue cheese dressing, it just makes it that much better. I'll work my way through the rest of this menu in time, but I'll linger on this particular item for a while. The pork barbecue sandwich really does live up to its moniker: the best damn barbecue sandwich. The pork, which comes from Bloomington's own Butcher Block butcher shop, is cooked to perfection. It's tender and moist, with just the right amount of smokiness. I could eat this stuff without any sauce, but Opie's managed to get their hands on a sauce which makes this even better. Made by a crafty firefighter in nearby Ellettsville, this sauce is smoky, sweet, and spicy in all the right proportions. (Seriously, I would probably toss back shots of this stuff if it was socially acceptable and my wife wouldn't divorce me out of sheer disgust.). The only other thing I would add to this sandwich, aside from the included pickles and red onion rings, would be a small cup of their delicious cole slaw to put on the sandwich itself. (If you've never done this, you should give it a try. Deeelicious!) I've also got to give a quick mention to their delicious buffalo fries. They're crisp, spicy, and go well with ranch dressing or with plain old ketchup. The waitstaff is always friendly and efficient and they offer solid suggestions from the menu. (Be sure to tip them nicely.) The only gripe that I have, and it's a small one, is that it can be a little pricy for dinner. (It's still worth it.) On the plus side, though, their lunch menu is very nicely priced and offers some great selections, including the barbecue sandwich! Can you tell I like this place?

Quaint restaurant on the courthouse square that has a very good selection of sandwiches, salads, and soups. The house salad and a burger is my frequent choice. Their BLTs and fish sandwiches are good, too. Outstanding service by Cyndi.

Admittedly, I have not been to every burger place, but for me it was the best burger I have ever had. Plenty large enough (1/3 lb) burger, and the buffalo fries were great with ranch dressing. Do not miss the 'Big Lebrewski' beer specials either. Am almost a regular now, and enjoy the high back booths as my favorite seating option with a view of several games on the numerous TV screens. Attentive, but not intrusive, staff always seems to appear when needed for refills.

We took my daughter and the grand kids there during Christmas Break. It was just ok. My breaded pork tenderloin sandwich was ok. The best thing we had was the mozzarella sticks which were homemade. It is ok for a burger joint/sports bar. There are definitely better places to eat in Bloomington. Service was not good. I used to love this place after IU games if I did not want to wait to get into Nick's, I feel the quality has really slipped. I won't say that I will never go back, but it will not be at the top of my list.

  • Ben A.

Good burgers, good fries, and amazing mozzarella sticks. Service is pretty good too. There are a lot of expensive burger options on the menu that aren't worth the extra cost. Stick with the basic Opie Burger and you won't be disappointed.

This place has a great menu when it comes to variety and innovative burgers. The burgers themselves aren't that great, they are generally overcooked/charred and I've had much better, but the interesting toppings and amazing onion rings makes this place what it is. I definitely recommend a stop by this place!

  • Ken K.

A nice little restaurant on the square, it's not a very good bar (since it doesn't have one), not a very good sports lounge since there are only about 5 TV's, and not a very good restaurant since the food isn't that great and a bit overpriced. That makes it not very good at just about everything. That being said, the Reuben I had was big and satisfying, although I don't think you should have to pay $2.00 extra for fries instead of potato chips. At McDonalds, yes, at a sit-down burger joint, no.

Fantastic burgers and fried food. Great service, nice laid back people. People don't really come here that often, but I like it!

  • Tamara M.

I was dragged here once for a Saturday lunch downtown. The person doing the dragging raved about the food: how delectable the fried fish was and how they had the best onion rings in town. She lied. I ordered the chicken teriyaki sandwich, which despite the best efforts of the grilled pinapple and teriyaki sauce was dry, dry, dry. The servers seemed to be college freshmen who didn't give a darn--they barely said hello when we walked in the door and were more interested in chatting together than serving people. My boyfriend flat-out refused to eat his cardboardy fries, and I can assure you he will normally eat /anything/ fried. I will kick and fuss if anyone ever tries to bring me there again.

Always make a stop here when I'm back for homecoming. Burgers are good...maybe priced a little high though.

  • Margo M.

The food here is delicious, although a bit over priced for what it is. I love the atmosphere! Plenty of sports, beer, and wings. Their wings are amazing-- juicy, rich, tender.. This coming from a boneless wings gal. They have specials for every day of the week! Their beer isn't that expensive normally. I think it's 4 dollars for 32 oz domestic draft. A pitcher is 5 dollars on Monday-- along with ALL burgers being 5 dollars.

Good food! I have been here more then once and i have to say, the vast majority of their menu is pretty good. The only things that could improve is the soup. It just never tastes right to me. Like someone forgot to put something into it. Besides that, the cheese sticks are HUGE and not over cooked and i highly recommend their Reuben sandwich. I will be back again.

I agree with Misha. The burgers were once the best, but have shrunk in size and lost their appeal. I think that Scotty's Brewhouse has the best burger in town.

  • Catherine H.

Great selection of burgers and hot dogs. I can vouch for the burgers being delish.

  • Misha M.

Well, this used to be the best burger in Bloomington - then new owners took over and everything went to crap. They changed the burgers, lost the great specials, and jacked up the prices. Just go to Nick's if you want a good burger.

    (3)
  • A. W.

First they moved from up the street near Rocket's to the current location on the square, where once upon a time, briefly, one could get awesome N. African food if one waited forever and ever, and lost the great high booths, and I know the food was already suffering soon after because I remember eating an poor rendition of Tadd's BBQ sandwich at the new place, but at some point after this the food just went to total crap. In the age of Yelp, I have had few food-related regrets as great as when I did not trust my judgment and walk right back out when I visited this past Spring. This place should be on Kitchen Nightmares, except apparently if you serve crap at real food prices you can make money even in this prime real estate.
