Burgers
Burger or Hamburger is savored as the most desired fast food meal in the United States. A hamburger is basically a sandwich prepared by stuffing ground meat patty, generally beef, between two slices of a bun cut in half. Hamburger is also famous for its seasoning. Most popular condiments used in hamburgers in the United States are mustard, mayonnaise, and ketchup. Besides ground meat patty, hamburgers are also stuffed with lettuce, onions, tomato slices, pickles, and cheese.
Hamburgers are also categorized into two types in the United States. Fast food hamburger and individual hamburgers served at restaurants are two basic types of burgers served in the United States. The individual hamburgers served at restaurants are prepared using everything including lettuce, onion, tomato, and sliced pickles as well as melted cheese on the patty or crumbled on top. American restaurants also serve veggie burgers for those who don't relish meat. Cheeseburgers are also hot favorite in the United States.
McDonalds is the most popular fast food burger restaurant serving different types of burgers in the United States. On the other hand, there are several restaurants such as Burger King are famous for serving the best hamburgers in the United States. Most burger restaurants in the United States often serve hamburgers with French fries and other condiments. If you have a liking for burgers in the United States, then you won't be disappointed. Can't recommend enough. Simple food perfectly executed, I'm a customer for life. A double with cheese, fries, and a chocolate shake is as comforting as a meal can be. Keep up the great work.

By far the best burgers in town. A local favorite, that not many IU students are aware of/willing to venture out to, therefore the wait is fairly short. The burgers are a greasy combination of heaven. Their krinkle-cut fries get the job done. Don't forget the delicious sweet tea either. You get those three, and you have the terrific triangle. The service is not necessarily friendly per se, but who cares when you are eating one of the best burgers at such a low price. Plenty of parking is available too. Only open during lunch hours, so plan accordingly.

A Bloomington institution! If you like White Castle's greasy oniony goodness, you will love Hinkle's. They are cash only, so come prepared. I allow myself this indulgence once a year, and I like to top it off my lunch with Cresent Donuts from across the street!

If "grease is the word" then Hinkle's is the place. I took my wife and daughter there on a Friday night around 7:15pm and they close at 8:00pm. We were three of five patrons and I'm sure the folks would have liked to coast out but they were pleasant and the oil was still hot. We all had the cheeseburgers. These burgers are the type that have the crispy edges with a bit of chew and they were prepared on the money. To push the envelope I alos ordered a breaded tenderloin and boy I'm glad I did. It was very good. We also had the jap poppers, onion rings and mushrooms. The jap poppers were below average but the shrooms were above average and the rings were good. We saw where they serve crinkle cut fries and I'm sure I would have liked them. Every now and again I have the need for some good ol' fried food and Hinkles knows how to burn. Drop on in and leave with that smell in your clothes. If that's not your thing then drive on by but they do what they do pretty darn well.

better than bubs!

Everywhere in the world there is a McDonald's there should instead be a Hinkle's, or, at least, an independently owned establishment similar to Hinkle's. The food isn't dietetic; it's fries, onion rings, cheeseburgers and soda, but it's everything those greasy delights were meant to be. The ambience is ideal to the fare; the building is squat and low slung with everything sturdy and functional, but inexpensive. The sauces and ketchup are in giant squeeze-bottles, and the decor consists mostly of frank excoriations reminding you to behave properly in their establishment. The odor is appropriately one of fried food and oil, which will linger on your person and clothing for quite a while. Orders are taken at the entrance, and only cash is accepted. You won't be thrown out or sent to the back of the line, but if you don't know ordering procedure you will scowled at. Your food is delivered down the counter in plain, brown, grease-soaked bags with the same pleasant disregard as your order was taken. I once had a cheeseburger and onion rings that had taken longer than it should have delivered with the following phrase, "[h]ere's your food; you can eat now." The burgers themselves are something special. Somewhere in American history it was decided in a smoke-filled back room that all burgers would either be sandwiches with so many vegetables, sauce, and big honkin' beef patties that you couldn't possibly take a bite from them, or a cheap, fast-food simulacrum of that sandwich. Apparently, Hinkle's didn't get the memo 're: shadowy cabal sets burger standard' and have been making a relatively unique product for decades. Perhaps most importantly, all the meat for their burgers is ground fresh on site, daily. Anyway you slice it, that's hardcore, and that has to be more sanitary than meat preground at a plant. After it's lovingly ground by hand, the meat is plopped right before your eyes on a sizzling hot grill, with or without onions cooked right into the meat depending on your preference. My recommendation is: for the love of god, get it with the onions. After being seared into a thin patty that's crispy on the outside and soft on the inside, your burger is dressed with pickles (lettuce and other nonsense is available if you must, but it's extra) and cheese if you want it (also extra and recommended). All of that is nestled in a plain white bun that's wrapped in soon to be transparent with grease wax paper. This process causes a bond to be formed among the components that results in an item more akin to a dumpling than a sandwich. That perfectly bonded, salty, greasy, crispy, chewy, meaty, oniony disk, suitable for easy consumption without unhinging your jaw, is what a hamburger should be. The fries and onion rings are well-executed as well and they are exactly the vegetables appropriate to serve with what a hamburger should be. Yes, they're vegetables and, if you say otherwise, I'll just put my fingers in my ears and sing an extemporaneous song about how much I love hamburgers to drown out your shrill and odious lies. I have to admit that this style of hamburger, service, or restaurant is not for everyone (a statement not intended to judge those who don't care for it), but it certainly plays to all of my weaknesses. You owe it to yourself that next time you're craving fast-food you drop by Hinkle's instead of some soulless national or international chain. It's possible you'll regret the calories, but unlikely that you'll think it wasn't worth it.

Great local place. Food puts Five Guys to shame. Some of the best burgers in Bloomington. I will say the prices have gotten a little high, but I have been going there for almost 30 years.
(4)Lynn J.
Oh, yes, this is as good as it gets. I love to come here for a burger because they are so good and I love to be given a hard time, but I do ration my trips. One has to save the good stuff so it does not become mundane. Price is right, flavor is amazing. If you missed out on this little local do yourself a favor and try it. I am even willing to wait in line behind you, because I will be sincerely happy for you. Top that!

I loved it that Gayle King visited one of my college haunts and I'm willing to go out of my way to go here if I'm in Southern Indiana.. I'm one of those people who likes specific things on my burger and even though I feel bad doing it, I try to order with humility and an apologetic tone. I agree with Ryan's comments about simplicity and charred greasy goodness.
(5)Ryan D.
Peer through the misty grease cloud at the plastic menu board and you'll realize simplicity is the boon of Hinkle's. This joint is clearly quite dated and will make you miss your dad. He would love the crispy grilled edges of the ground beef, the wavy-cut fries, the aged staff who care about where they work and who they work with, and most of all, it's lack of gimmicks. I'd take my old man here because, quite frankly, he's sick of the curried, veggified, organic disregard of the food chain in Bloomington. An older woman in tuquoise leggins might hand you a brown bag containing your order. "Here's your food, you can eat now," she'll say. Note that she too is snacking on the same charred greasy goodness in between customers. I hope this place never changes. By the way, I myself love the curried, veggified, organic Bloomington. Bring cash.
(5)Christopher K.
This is a good burger joint that has been around for a long time. It is a small restaurant and they only take cash. The burgers are greasy but really good. They are thin so you have to at least order a double. I don't like onions and I have to make sure I tell them that...or they will make your burgers with the onions in it. Be prepared for the women to call you a "Wimpie" for not wanting onions. They are joking and make your experience fun. This place also has decent fries, chili, and milkshakes.
(4)Bruce H.
I ate here for the first time and have to say the hype is better than the food. Now don't get me wrong the double cheeseburger was good but not great. The fries, about 10 in that little bag, was greasy at best. I did like the lemonade and the women have an edge about them, love it. The price was good, $6 for double, fries and drink. I honestly left hungry, could have easily eaten 2 doubles. Probably will not go back

These burgers are delicious. I can't recommend Hinkle's enough to meat-eaters. They take credit cards now, too.
(4)David R.
If you are looking for a small burger joint in Bloomington that serves greasy food, then this place is for you! The burgers are good, and the patties are not like typical patties you would find anywhere else. The meat kind of reminds me of the meat you find in a philly cheese steak. The menu isn't really diverse, and as a sign clearly points out that this place is not Burger King so you can not have it your way. If you do not get that comment that means you can't just add and leave off what you want to. As I am sure everyone is pointing out, this place only accepts cash. Furthermore Hinkles is not open all the time, and sort of has weird hours, so make sure you check to see if they are open before you head out. Overall I would say if you are looking for a different kind of burger you should definitely try this place out.
(3)Mak J.
Love this place. Just bring cash and order from the menu. They can get kind of surly if you try and get all fancy with it. You may want to get two burgers as they are thin but delectable. The tenderloin is an awesome alternative as well.
(5)Ed M.
This reminds me of an old-fashioned roadside hamburger joint. And that's a compliment. It's a burger done on a flat top with grilled onions and dill pickles. I had mustard and mayonnaise on my double cheeseburger. Sure it's greasy, but it's loaded with flavor and the taste that you can't get at a chain burger place. They've got other stuff on the menu, but get a burger. That's what this place is about.
(4)Rick B.
Hinkle's was a lot of fun ... but hard to describe. It is an old-fashioned family-run hamburger joint that has a lot of soul. I suspect you won't find another like it around Bloomington. It certainly has all the ambiance that is missing from the chains ... in reading some of the other reviews you'll probably smile a bit and they are pretty much all true. Some may like this kind of hamburger and others won't, but it was an adventure trying it out. I watched them make the hamburgers and was fascinated. They grind their own beef so it comes out in small balls...which meat they put on the grill and smash down with a flipper. If you order it the regular way with onions and pickles - they then put some fresh onions on top and smash them into the meat patty...then some pickles and smash those into the patty...then they place the top bun on and let it sit. While the meat patty browns the steam rises through the bun top and gets soft. Then they take off the top and place it on one side of the grill...flip the burger to get the other side browned and smash it down again. (By this time the patty is smashed so flat it can't hold any juice or fat.) Once done on that side they put the masterpiece together and serve it up. It was really pretty good. Someone else noted that it tasted a bit like a White Castle and I second that - especially because of the onions and pickle that were mated to it. My only complaint is they do smash that little burger a bit too much - there is little juice of any kind left in it and it tasted a bit dry...but it did have a distinctive taste. Fries came out in small bags that highlighted the frying medium... but they were made to order and tasty as well. Not sure I would try much else on the menu - after all it is a hamburger joint - but the burgers are worth the try and the prices are from the 1960s. We had been by this place any number of times and missed it ... I am glad we finally made the stop.

Clearly this is a little spot of love, tucked away in Bloomington, IN. The staff was friendly and treated our group like regulars, which is ideal in this atmosphere. On to the food... I ordered the Double Hinkle Burger with cheease, lettuce and tomato. In my one experience there, I have to say that the condiments are a must. The burgers are smashed so thin and crispy that the mayo and ketchup really do a lot. I enjoyed the burger more and more the more I ate! Everything was really coming together by the halfway point. (A friend who didn't get the extras regretted that choice-but I respect his decision to order it "standard.") The fries were a tasty accompaniment! I would order a shake next time around. I'd conclude that this is an important spot to check out if you are a "foodie" and in Bloomington. (Not including "snoodie foodies."*) *the term snoodie foodie has been trademarked by me in this review just now.

Very hole is the wall place that keeps early hours so it's hard for a guy who works out of town to make it there. Thank goodness for days off. I needed a light lunch to tide me over so I stopped for a burger. This is definitely a dive type place which often times means there is great food and it didn't disappoint. Hot crispy griddled burgers were delivered fresh and along with the pickle and grilled onions made a nice treat. Nothing earth shattering, but if I'm ever out and want a burger, I'd definitely stop here before any of the chain places.
(4)Rob P.
Excellent burgers. Not sure if the special is every day, but 3 burgers for $5 is filling and delicious. Cheese onions and pickles add a little more money, but well worth it. I don't think I could find this place again on my travels, but if I do, I will return.

So as you can see below someone from Hinkle's responded to my review asking me to disclose date and time of visit So our visit was the same day as the review. And it would have been around 1130am and the biggest offender of handling raw hamburger meat with his bare hands and then touching my bread and condiments on my sandwich would be the very person who replied below telling me that this is not acceptable behavior and would like to know who did it, based on the pic in the profile that is the very same guy. You make a pretty decent greasy burger just put some gloves on man before you kill somebody, and as for passing health inspections with flying colors we know how small town health inspectors work. Slip them a few dollars or free food and they would sign anything so that is not very impressive. I have seen homeless soup kitchens shut down for violations not nearly as serious as the ones that I listed.

Not really sure why people give five stars to a place that makes the most greasy and slimy food. Where is there room to review something that is really worth the five stars. It's not terrible but it's definitely not five stars. Just a family run greasy burger joint that's all. Get over it people its not "trendy" to like dive places anymore. Actually the fries are limp and greasy and the burgers fall apart. Again, its not disgusting but c'mon 5 stars? What's wrong with you people. Honestly if you were blindfolded and taken to this joint or white castle or if I had some old 50/50 fatty meat and made u a burger you wouldn't know the difference. Five stars... ridiculous... If you were to ask me to sum up in one sentence. I would say "it's not disgusting". Actually it kind of is though.
(2)Ken D.
Still the best burger in town. I miss the old lady at the register though.
(5)Andrea S.
It was everything I expected and more. I love the small, thin, greasy burgers...and Hinkles did it justice. The bonus is that the burgers are NOT processed. The grilled onions and pickles...so damn good. I ordered a Hinkle w/ cheese & fries. Next time I will just get 2 burgers, they were that good. We are only in Bloomington, IN once a year for Thanksgiving. This will now be a spot we have lunch on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. This place is family owned and operated.

While stopping in for some burgers last Saturday, I took a look at their printed menu and found that Hinkle's opens at 6:00 AM and serves breakfast, too. What caught my eye was the biscuits and gravy -- one of my favorite breakfasts. I have to tell you in all honesty that Hinkle's makes some of the best biscuits and gravy that I have ever had here in Bloomington. The gravy is spiced very well without being too salty or overly peppered, and the consistency is thick but velvety. The biscuits are big and fluffy, split down the middle and blanketed with that fantastic gravy. At $1.29 for a not-so-small single order and $2.29 for a genuinely large order, this is one of the best breakfast values in town. Even better, this is available all day long while supplies last. This place never fails to put a smile on my face. I LOVE HINKLE'S!
(5)Angela H.
Hinkle's has the best straight-up-no-BS burgers in Bloomington.
(4)Sarah B.
One of the best kept secrets in Bloomington. Because it is off the beaten path of Bloomington, Hinkel's does not get the attention it deserves--but it is well worth the trip. While it is not always easy to get a table, the clients of Hinkel's are worth hanging around for. The servers and customers are Hoosiers through and through, and I have never had a bad experience dining with them. The burgers are always delicious (the perfect amount of greasy), the fries always hit the spot, and the milkshakes are ALWAYS perfection. Don't let the rumors deter you--they do have credit card machines!
(5)Ron B.
Small hole in the wall burger joint that has been around forever, so I hear. They say they grind their own meat daily but did not see any real proof of that in the restaurant. The restaurant is really cramped on space and there are a total of 6 tables to sit at. I came during lunch rush and got a double cheeseburger combo. Burger came out piping hot, something you don't see from some traditional restaurants but it didn't have any special qualities, plain bun like you buy from a grocery store, a few pickles and that's really it. Fries are frozen type out of a bag, jalapeño poppers were frozen type as well. I was greeted and served by 2 ladies and they seemed to act like they didn't want to be there, kinda rude in my opinion. Food is decent but def would not drive out of my way to come here.
(3)Jeff P.
Best Hamburgers in the country. Service with an attitude. Small Family run burger shop, been around for decades and hasn't changed. If you are in Bloomington this is a must for lunch.
(5)MsAnthro P.
Greasy, salty, oniony and wrong, but so damned good you'll want to give yourself a pass every now and then and just go for it. The onion rings and potato cakes are better than any you can get at any big-name fast-food places. The flavor of the burgers is not unlike that of a White Castle slider, but significantly better as it includes meat that actually has the consistency of (shocker!) real meat. Ground on the premises, in fact. And, indeed, you can see that that's what it is while they prepare it. The ambiance is totally no-frills and the service from the old-school owner can be a little abrupt, but that's definitely part of its charm. If you don't get too picky and know better than to try to pay with a credit card, you should escape unscathed with a greasetastic bag of goodies.
(4)E B.
They do not accept debit or credit cards, so if your time-machine is broken and you want to experience what things were like in the 1980s, Hinkle's is your best alternative. As far as the food goes, it's tasty and greasy, which is good. There is a large sign on the storefront that reads "We grind our meat fresh daily." This might have been appealing to my grandmother's generation, but nowadays it seems like it needlessly implants the image of a slaughterhouse into the mind of the customer. Basically, Hinkle's is a moderately priced, family-run, American burger joint. Their signature burger includes only caramelized onions and beef, but it is made right in front of you and it's delicious. Support this place because, if for no other reason, it is the only income source for a family of rural Indiana hillbillies, and you might be able to capture a photo of them before their entire population dies out.
(3)Peter A.
Well it has all the looks of a really great hamburger stand - that small local feel, only open for lunch, and doesn't take cards. I really wanted to like it. But the burgers themselves? Meh. My friend thought they were pretty identical to a white castle burger. Now I'm not that harsh, I thought they were actually pretty decent, but for the price (Double cheeseburger + regular fries and no drink was $7.25 before tax), it's not really worth it. I'm glad I tried it once, but I don't see any need to go back.
(2)Colin D.
One of the best burgers in Bloomington. The restaurant has very dive-y, small town restaurant atmosphere that I like. It is one of those rare gems that is not found too often in major cities these days. The staff is friendly and invitive. A really delicious place to eat!
