I've been here several times over the past three years that I've lived in Bloomington. The good things about this place are that there is free parking, lots of seating inside, and that they have free wi-fi. They also have a lot of specials such as large salads on Mondays for $4.50 and $3 burgers (including a vegetarian option) on Wednesdays. People watching is also relatively good here and the Bakehouse is cool with you hanging out for as long as you want given that you are a paying customer. The reason I can't give more than 3 stars though is that nothing here will really impress you. The desserts are way too sugary and below average and the food is well...just average. Today I got the Vegetarian Chili (bowl) which was pretty satisfying, but nothing I would call above average. Check out this place if you are a local, but skip it if you are visiting from out of town. There are better places to spend your time.

It takes 5 minutes to get noticed every time I go there. Usually 15 minutes just to get a toasted bagel with cream cheese. Pay special attention to the cobwebs and layers of dirt near the soda machine and silverware. If the bagels weren't so good, I'd never go back. Luckily, the make the bagels north of town. Otherwise, I'd be afraid to eat them.

Chai tea is meh. Fruit shakes are not real fruit, flavoring is strongly syrupy. And whatever bagel is supposed to be available for lox and bagel, is never available. Staff is almost bipolar.. Friendly or sour, not consistent. However... Family friendly. Four cheese eggs delish. Lox with Sun dried bagel, my fave. Well lit, good parking, not loud, clean. A little pricy, not ridiculous. Management cares here.

$3 burgers on Wednesday:) my husband and I are two burgers(delicious), Mac and cheese(like my homemade) and two drinks for 13$!!!

  • Beth R.

Ugghh...crumbs all over tables and chairs, dishes piled in the bus tub, no spoons and surley looking staff standing around just talking and ignoring the mess. I was embarrassed that I suggested it for a meeting. Never again!

$2.50 for a bottomless cup of coffee and Wednesday $3 burgers make it the perfect place to study all day...on Wednesdays. Their burgers aren't big or tasty enough for me to eat them on any other day, and the friends are $1.50 extra, which is pushing it considering the size of the portion (small) and the quality (okay). But yeah--burger and fries for under $5 is always awesome. Did I mention all the coffee you can drink?

So you can check me out. I don't give out very many 5 star reviews to anyone. I am just very glad that I didn't let some of these ridiculous reviews scare me off from trying this place out. We had lunch here today Saturday August 29th and it was amazing! If I was inclined to knock any points off them it would be the guy at the register, he had minimal menu knowledge and wasn't the friendliest but everyone else there was very warm and friendly to us. First of all we are two guys who can eat, and we ordered half sandwiches which are larger than most places whole ones. I am not kidding. So I got the half of a Chicken wrap and the coleslaw, and I never order coleslaw out at a restaurant and I ate it all. The wrap was delicious and very filling. I loved the black bean and corn salsa in it. My spouse got the half Turkey Lorraine and said it was delicious as well. I decided to go back in and get some dessert because it would be next to impossible to stand at the counter and order your meal without your mouth watering for all these amazing desserts they have in the case in front of you. So I bought a strawberry cupcake which was out of this world and then some dream bar I believe it was which had coconut, chocolate and white chips and a ton of other things on it and it was mouth watering as well. If you eat and then get dessert as well it can add up but I still thought the value was there. Trust me we really didn't need any dessert it was just that irresistible. I do wish they used to go cups when you purchase a fountain drink so that I could take one with me but hey not a huge deal. I had talked to a really nice lady and told her about my reservations about dining there with the negative reviews on Yelp and told her that after eating here that the people who wrote the negative reviews are either competitors or insane because it don't get any better than this in Bloomington! We were dining outside and it wasn't long after I had spoken to her that a gentleman came out to our table and introduced himself as the General Manager and appreciated out kind words about how great the food was, he talked to us for quite a while. Just a very friendly guy and certainly made us feel welcomed and valued. As if this review could not get any better, we were emptying our trash and about to head out the door and the General Manager stopped us and thanked us again and then gave us a bag of their granola. Now I am not a huge granola eater but that was most definitely a very nice gesture and one that I have not experienced in a very long time. That type of service has made us loyal customers for as long as we live in the Bloomington area!!

I love this place! The staff is always friendly and the food is delicious. I love to come here when I need to get work done. The atmosphere is relaxing and there's always coffee if you need the extra brain power. I came today for breakfast for the first time and asked for orange juice, I was surprised to find that it was freshly squeezed! Wow! Definitely recommend this place.

Great burgers. Might be best I've had! They have an excellent assortment of teas as well. Had soup yesterday and loved it too! The place can get crowded at lunch, but they manage the crowd well.

Thought it was pretty good. Like the atmosphere and the funky decor. Stopped for lunch...pretty crowded so, no tables left, that's always a good sign. (As a personal rule I try to avoid places with empty dining rooms for the obvious reasons). Anywho I forget what they were calling it... funny French name that escapes me right now. Basically a ham & cheese toasted onto very fresh little bread roll. (Like croque monsieur, but nothing on the outside maybe?) The counter-person taking my order was trying to warn me that it was not a "large portion", came with no sides or anything... but I found it to be just the right amount of food. Thanks for leaving the pepsi machine out in the dining area where people can get their own refills. Freakin love that.... +1 star ;)

Bakehouse is a large, airy cafe, with lots of people on Macbooks doing work or studying. The atmosphere was great. The price for food was not. I paid $11 for the whole Crazy Chicken sandwich. I was expecting a gigantic sandwich since it cost $11. It was not. It was a normal sized sandwich. I think $11 was too steep a price. The sandwich was toasted with sliced chicken, spinach, tomato and brie cheese. The chicken was deli style chicken so the sandwich ended up salty with the brie cheese and the brown mustard balsamic glaze. It came with a side and I chose grapes. I was glad for the healthy option. But, I was very disappointed in my sandwich overall.

Meh is right. I was very let down this morning. Tried to order a breakfast sandwich without the egg and was told that it was not possible. Really? Someone can't refrain from making an egg? If it came on it prepackaged, and lets hope not, it could be taken off. Not sure why it was such a big request. So, settled for the french toast. The serving was large, but I would have gladly taken less toast if I could get a side of sausage included. My meal was just okay. Syrup was nothing special, and its serving was only enough for about one slice. Disappointed for sure. The person with me got a platter. It came with a little bit of everything. He agreed that it was just alright. Toast was dry, the rest was average. Also, Before we even got to the food, we got there early on accident. It opens at 7:30 on saturday and it was 7:26. We waited outside, seen by the staff, until a few after 7:30. I understand we made a mistake by coming early, but we were not the only ones. At other places if that happens they usually still let you come in and sit, look at the menu.

Have been here in the past with mixed reviews of food and service, but just thought today to review it, and had really good experience with both on my visit. Daughter got a strawberry cupcake ("It's not just strawberry icing, there are actual little bites of strawberry in the cupcake itself!!," she said) and I got a chocolate chip scone. Both were good and the server was lovely. We came at 3:30 on a Sunday afternoon in the week between Christmas & NY (translation: no students in town), so it was nice and not overly crowded. We'd tried Panera first and their baked good selection was wiped out, so we crossed the street for this - good move on our part, I think!

I want to start out by echoing another sentiment on here. This is the sort of place where I can overlook flaws or mistakes because the food is damn good and the staff is pretty groovy. On my last visit, I ordered the ham and cheese w/out mustard and the mac and cheese, which is incredible. First, a tip of the hat to Bakehouse for listing what is on the sandwiches. Panera has stopped doing this, and I literally have to ask what is on a sandwich before I order. I despise spicy mustard. After a little wait, the sandwich and mac and cheese came out..buuuuutt.. there was mustard, so they had to make it again, which they did very quickly. I had the mac and cheese to tide me over, and work to do, so it was no big deal. Both locations have consistently good food, and I really should eat there more often. Cool staff, good food... it's a pretty good combination!

Oh how I miss this place now that I no longer live in Bloomington. The croissants, the cupcakes, the schmears, the amazing PB&J made with granola, and of course the lovely Kirk who knows everyone by name! This is without a doubt my favorite place to sit and work in Bloomington. Not as hectic as the downtown Bakehouse, but with all the goodies and a good number of outlets. Oh, and a fire place and easy parking! And on Wednesdays they have $3 burgers!

  • Rachel S.

Pros: good coffee Cons: over-priced and sad sandwiches I got a chicken sandwich that was supposed to be "pulled" with bbq sauce and toppings. Um, well... fail. It was two pieces of white bread with no sauce, about a 1/4 chicken breast and a thin piece of cheese on one half. The cole slaw might as well just say "side of onions". I can't even tell what my husband got, but his face matches mine with hungry disappointment. Now, after spending $25 with my husband, we have to go home to eat since we are both unsatisfied and still hungry.

You definitely want to join their VIP club (it's free) if you eat here more than once a year. VIP members receive special discount offers via email each month (you also get a free $10 giftcard for your birthday!). If you want additional discounts, follow them on Twitter. The food is excellent, but would be a bit too pricey for me if I didn't take advantage of the specials/discounts available to VIP members. One other tip - visit them on Wednesdays. Every burger on the menu (which include a side) is just $3 all day.

Let's get one thing straight: I love the waitstaff. They understand the product, they read French literature in the café during their breaks, and they make a conscious effort to get to know who you are. This is a restaurant, though. Dishes are largely hit and miss. Portions are a little small. I assume (based on the atmosphere) that the prices are justified by one of two things: either they make items in-house or ingredients are ethically acquired. Almost every pastry comes with way too much icing. If you can get the peanut butter cups, you won't regret it. That being said, they have an excellent playlist which is great for marathon study sessions. Following them on Twitter (@ScholarsInnBake) will let you in on daily deals, which sometimes includes free food. They carry the entire Republic of Tea product line, which is a godsend for fellow tealitists. This is one of those places where you don't mind putting up with a flaw or two because other aspects are so damn endearing.

Good food and generally the pastries are good but I don't feel like they are always fresh. They have excellent bread, however I think Bloomingfoods has good options too. I definitely enjoy this one 1000x more than the downtown location. I'm used to being treated by the staff like they don't want you be there and you're an irritation - but that's usually at Jamaican restaurants. Young liberal students at a café shouldn't. Stick to the East Side.

This place infuriates me almost every time I visit. I go back after a while, remembering that the food is pretty good - and there aren't many other options in town for a somewhat healthy sandwich meal. The prices are way too high. I don't know why they try to sell a half sandwich as the regular portion, then make you pay double for a whole sandwich, which ends up being well over $10. The wait for food is consistently ridiculous, and they have forgotten to bring my order several times. Today I waited for 25 min for a sandwich and a kids order of mac and cheese. It was $19 so I asked for the receipt - this is the first time they have been able to produce it; normally when I ask to see it the slacker at the register doesn't know how to do it. The macaroni was cold with hard, brown dried cheese sauce on top, nothing underneath. Needless to say my kid would not eat it. My BLT was pretty tasty when I finally got it, but not worth $19. The slacker that brings the food to the tables is so ridiculously slow, saunters around holding plates with her mouth open, and loooooong dirty hair nearly brushing the tables. They have the cheapest products possible on the tables and self-service beverage station, offer no service, want you to bus your tables and clear the plates into a dirty bin, serve tiny portions (they are really skimpy with salads), and charge like it is an upscale bistro. Today I resolve to not give in and to never go back there.

Service here is excellent. When they forgot to include my friend's sandwich in our order and we came back, they were incredibly apologetic and included 2 free items with our order. Food is slightly better than average.

I came here to visit a friend on an early Friday afternoon. I ordered a salad and a drink. The spinach salad was pretty good and had great portobello mushrooms on it, but it was nothing to write home about. My friend ordered a cappuccino and a pastry, but the barista completely forgot about her cappuccino and she went back to ask about it after 20 minutes. There is a good amount of parking, plenty of places to sit indoors, and a few tables outside. It looked like there were several people with books and laptops, so it must be a good place to study. I've been told the bread is amazing, but I'm not much of a bread person so I can't report. I've been told the VIP club can get you some great deals. There are some great specials on burgers and salads on certain days of the week, and my friend loves the pastries! You bus yourself, but the bussing station at the time was a mess and clearly not attended to. It was pretty gross. I personally has a meh experience due to the lackluster food and poor service, but my friend who actually lives in the area goes there a lot.

Not sure if their is new management, or management is lacking, but this location is incredibly slow. Waited 15 minutes for a panini.

How does this place compete with Panera and McAlisters? I so want a non-chain place to be the best, but am consistently disappointed in this place. The sandwiches come on bread that overwhelms what is in between. The kids meals leave my young daughters hungry (the kids hamburger is served ala carte). At similar price points, Panera and McAlisters deliver better food and a better experience. Please step up your lunch game, S.I. Bake house, I want to praise you.

Sort of like a Berkley Coffee shop without the good coffee or pastries.
