Excellent service, delicious hearty meals priced just right. My favorite was the perfectly prepared calamari. I will definitely be back.

Not sure what happened to the family or people that ran the restaurant on Lafayette road? That location was not the best but the service and food was a little better. The food at the original was fine but good service was inconsistent. Fast forward to the Avon location and pretty much the same but in a better location. When I moved to Avon I was happy to see the restaurant because I used to love the eggplant Parmesan. However, my last visit was not good. I ordered for takeout and the lady at the front looked at me more than once and never said anything. Eventually someone came out and took my order. I received the order and the eggplant had a decent flavor but the skin of the eggplant was very tough and chewy. I don't recall that before or at other competitors. My wife's dish was not good either. She didn't complain but she has never asked to go back to the restaurant and she was a big fan of the other location. I wish the family the best and hope you take these reviews into consideration. I think a few minor adjustments will return the restaurant to the greatness it once was. Good luck.

I have always been a huge fan of Papa Joe's Jr. High school memories were made here and beyond, I even held my rehearsal dinner here 8 years ago. Sadly this place has gone downhill. A staple in Avon and a place we would go at least once a week . Once George passed, I wondered what would happen. And it hasn't been good. I stopped in last week an hour before an appointment to grab a quick lunch, felt I had plenty of time to have a salad. given my appointment was 5 minutes away. I sat at the bar top and ordered a glass of Pinot Noir. I noticed the server/bartender was struggling. She was looking through the cooler and finally showed me a bottle of Pinot Grigio. I said, no, that's not it. She continued to look in the cooler when I finally, yet politely said, "it's not going to be in there." I pointed at a bottle on the bar top and told the server/bartender that's a Pinot Noir, I will have that. Her response: "Well it won't be cold." Let's go on.........I ordered the Works Salad. Nothing needs to be cooked on this salad and yet I waited 20 minutes. Once I received my salad, I told the server/bartender, that I would go ahead and take my check. I actually had to get up and find my server to pay. She explained to me that she couldn't find the button to ring in my wine. I looked at the computer she was working at and explained to her that she was under the "white wine category" and she needed to be in reds....She finally found the right wine to ring in, which was $11 for a 4 oz house pour. At this point, I was getting pressed on time and she was completely frazzled, at which, I stayed calm. She then ran my card for a beer, total $4.63. I said, "that is not my tab." She then got super frazzled to find a manager/card to void this and no one was there to do so and she explained to me that she would charge me for what I had and once the manager came in they would void the additional charge and that I would see a credit on my account. This has now been a week. I'm not sweating over $4.63. But ya'll need to get it together. Bring back the bread, dressings, sauces. Don't try to fix something that isn't broken. George would be rolling to know what has happened to this staple restaurant in Avon....

I really wanted to like this restaurant - I'm very into local, non-chain restaurants in Indy but I was really disappointed. I thought the food was very bland. In addition to that, they got my order wrong. I ordered 3 cheese penne pasta and got ravioli, but I was so hungry at that point I didn't complain. I like ravioli also, and figured you can't mess up ravioli. But I couldn't even finish the meal because it was so bland, I went home and ate another meal. The pros: they had a piano player that night which was a nice surprise. I also gave it 2 stars instead of one because our waiter was attentive and friendly (even though he got my order wrong). But I definitely wouldn't try this place again.

Dinner here last here with the kids. The food is great. The pizza is really good. Service is average.

Wow this place is a joke. Honestly our experience seemed like a fictional restaurant nightmares episode. To start with, the server came out and asked what we wanted to drink. I asked what beers they have. She started listing the draft beers and after the third one mentioned (Fistful of Hops) the hyperactive manager who was hovering behind her jumped in and interrupted excitingly stating 'that's a seasonal brew from Sunking!!!' I acknowledged him and said I'm well aware of what that beer is. The server just stared at me blankly. I asked if that was all and finally she continued to name the rest of the drafts. I ordered a beer. The appetizer (calamari) was ok but really quite bland. I do have to commend them that at least it was crispy, it just lacked flavor. On to the food... We split a pizza and my friend got the Chicken Parmesan. The chicken parm was HUGE! Not exactly in a good way either. Rubbery noddles, watery marinara, and the size of the fried breast alone made me wary to even eat it (chicken breasts should not be larger than a 12" dinner plate) The pizza looked like it was dropped on the floor and they scraped up the toppings and slopped them back on top. Half of the pizza wasn't even there. Waitress said they 'lost' half the pizza and they have another half in the oven coming out for us soon. I thought it was a joke so I clarified with her 'you are cooking HALF a pizza to bring out to replace the half that fell??' She was completely serious. She said yes, they are cooking half a pizza for us. The pizza that made it out to the table was nearly inedible. We waived her down and told her we don't want the pizza or the 'half' replacement. She reluctantly took it back. We had to reiterate with her that we did not expect to pay for it so she told the manager to comp it. A few minutes later the manager walked by about 5 feet away and shouted 'sorry about that pizza folks' as he was passing. During our 1 hour stay we witnessed 3 other dishes being returned to the kitchen. Aside from the lack of kitchen competence and sub par service, the entire atmosphere of the place is super tacky and akward. Real cheesy elevator jazz coming from a radio with a guy sitting at a player piano playing along to it (or at least acting like he was playing). Will never come back to this place.

Food is ok. Service is good. Tomato sauce has changed. Like the old sauce better! Calzone and pizzas is my favorite. Very kid friendly!

This was, by far, the worst experience I have ever had at a restaurant!! I am new to the Indianapolis area and this restaurant was recommended to me by an associate of mine. In a few reviews I read on this site I saw that the lasagna was "great" and my associate recommended their ceaser salad. In another review, someone said something thing about their decor, which in my opinion, was everything horrible about Italian culture just threw up in this place. Cheesy statues, pictures of wine bottles on the walls, about one hundred photos of random people literally screwed into the walls, and was outdated in general. The service was horrible. There was a couple who came in about five minutes after us who received their drinks (they were obviously regulars) and their orders were taken before we even got our drinks... and we had the same waitress!! The kitchen was semi open so we got to hear all the kitchen staffs complaints and could witness their disgusting attire. Their was a large metal bowl of flavored oil on the counter with no cover on it that was being spooned out onto plates to serve with bread. We ended up ordering the "Gouda and Spinich Dip" for an app., I ordered the 1/2 order of lasagna and a side ceaser, and my boyfriend ordered a sausage and extra cheese calzone. The salad came out quick but looked pre-prepped (Meaning they made a ton of em ahead of time and pulled it out of the fridge. The dressing was served on the side in a plastic ramikin. I didn't ask for it on the side) . Since we were seated by the kitchen we could hear the whole conversation between the server and the kitchen staff: "Where's my "Gouda"? Our entrees were in the window already. She told the kitchen staff to take the entrees back and give her the Gouda. When she brought it over I told her to just wrap it out and we would take it to go since our entrees were just getting cold in the window. When she told the kitchen staff she wanted the Gouda to go and the entrees back, the guy literally rolled his eyes right before he made eyes contact with me! I couldn't believe it!!! Then, when I got my "lasagna" it was literally just lasagna noodles layered with cheese and red sauce on top (not my idea of lasagna), and my boyfriend got a pepperoni and sausage calzone (not the sausage and extra cheese he ordered). And to top it all off, when I was gathering my things to head out the door I saw a server handle food with her bare hands!!!! I would never go here again nor would I recommend it to anyone!!!

My husband and I have been trying to support the family owned businesses in the area instead of frequenting the chain restaurant stand bys. We decided to give this place a try and are glad we did. Wonderful italian food, huge portions and decent price. My husband had a calzone that was easily 12 inches by 5 inches rectangle. The meals are your typical italian fare and all come with salad and bread for about $8-12. More than reasonable considering neither of us could finish half of our food. We will definitely visit this place when in the mood for italian. And as another review said, this is in Avon, not plainfield.

A pretty good place. A little pricey, but good for a moderate-high price night out. The atmosphere in the bar area is much nicer than that of the rest of the joint. The live piano ambience was great, but our waiter was kind of awful. He described the special as a "steak, with some marinara, or something." and his cellphone rang while he took our order. Clearly he was from the more casual half of the restaurant. But the rest of the experience was good.

I came here with our extended family last month for dinner (about 10 people) and we had reservations. We were all able to sit as soon as we arrived. The problems came once we got our food. I ordered Fettucine Alfredo. Prego sauce is pretty much the same as here. My meal looked like a college student's dinner. My husband got spaghetti and his thoughts were on the same page as mine. Not sure if our server was new or not, but he was all over the place. He brought wrong dishes twice and then forgot one all together! The dinner just wasn't what we expected unfortunately.

My dear departed MIL was a waitress at the original Papa Joe's on Lafayette Road, and introduced me to them almost 20 years ago. PJ Jr went downhill a couple of years ago, and I haven't been back . . . until tonight. Somebody has kicked some ass, and PJ's is back! Pretty much same menu, but better service, better flavor, ... and higher prices. But the food was great, so welcome back, Joe! on the downside, there were official notices of an 18% gratuity for parties of six or more, a $3.00 charge to split a plate, and a stern warning to "don't bring in your own food". Our waitress was unaware of these notices, and seemed honestly embarrassed to read them. "$3.00" became our running joke of the evening -- "You want extra butter for the bread? That will he $3.00". She got a 20% tip for her humor, though. Here's hoping the food and service stay at this level!

My family and friends have been going to Papa Joe jr for 24 years. We have watched it triple in size and watched it wane the past couple of years. Likely related somehow to the illness and untimely death of George, the owner. George and his family and loyal staff were a great force in the family business. Today we patroned the restaurant with our friends and their 20 something kids, that introduced us to the Italian resturant originally. The resturant has new ownership with a slight revamp of the old menu to the betterment of it. I had chicken marsala with asparagas and top notched mashed potatoes served with bread and salad with homemade dressing, delicious. Everyone in our party of six had good things to say about their meals. The food was served in a timely manner. The estsblishment is clean and well decorated. Give this family restaurant a try. Remember it is in Avon station behind Taco bell.

Disappointing. and OVER-PRICED. These are definitely not the same recipes that I was used to having a few years ago. Their special bread is no longer such, it's just ciabatta. I recently brought back a huge order my co-workers. Every salad was about $10. That's just nuts when it's nothing special and you can go to Applebee's or Chili's for a $6 fulfilling lunch. Also, not everyone got a piece of bread to go with their meal. When I came up the the counter to pick up the food, I watched as the cook just fluffed through all the boxes picking up the meat with her dirty glove to check and make sure the items were correct. It was a bit sickening. Can't you do that before you close it without touching everything?

Recent major improvements. Come back if you've been disappointed. Service outstanding. Salmon perfect...yes don't just stick with Italian dishes. Wonderful cheese bread, Marsala, and the wedge salad is enormous. Give them a try.

WOW what the heck happened to my favorite place to eat - well with the passing of our dear friend George, the place has new owners that will end up running everyone away. After 12 years of eatiing here...I will never go back! The owner has a bad attitude and will doesnt understand that quality, and price will keep him in business....so POOF be gone JERKBALL. Yes I am mad that I have to watch this place go under :(

I've been coming here for years. The food is very good and they have a wide variety of Italian dishes. I've been a huge fan of their works salads since the days of the original restaurant in Indy. For a couple of decades I have enjoyed this restaurant (And the original) . If you are new to it, try the sampler, can't go wrong there. Upgrading your dinner salad to a works takes a hefty upcharge of ( i think) $3.50 but I get every time. I've not been a fan of their home made cream based dressings. I think they are too thick, like mayonnaise and it doesn't spread very well. Although if you dip your fork in the dressing then into your salad each bite gets a nice bit a flavoring. The house vinaigrette was said to be tasty as well by my girlfriend. They have a full bar, live music occasionally, service is always consistently good. I might rate this a 3.5, but I'm giving it 4 as I prefer to come here than any other Italian place in Avon. Much more intimate than an Olive Garden. Sadly, I think the food quality has gone down a tad and hopefully they get it in check soon. The prices have also crept up a bit, which is ok, but with the food quality suffering I'm not as willing to accept the cost increase. They usually have good deals for specials that are not on the menu. Reservations aren't usually necessary, but on Valentine's Day, weekends, you will want to put your name in early. On my last trip they had a board up saying Kids eat free on Mondays which would save you about $5 per child (drinks not included) but, unfortunately, we weren't there on a Monday, but the kids seemed to enjoy their meals.

We have eaten here a few times in the last few years, the most recent last week. I see that there is one customer that had a bad experience there and I apologize. I don't work there, just have eaten there on occassion. I would feel the same If I were you. I would encourage you to give them another chance if you are in the area again. We usually do not sit in the first section. Our waitresses have been nice and professional. Our food is good and tastes great. We read at the cash counter that George has recently passed away and our condolences go out to his friends and family. There is another one up closer on the north side with a different atmosphere altogether. We have been there once, but prefer this one as it is quieter. My husband absolutely loves this place. We eat there about once a year as it is a bit pricey, but very good food. They do have a bar area in the back, but it is mostly a dine in restaurant.

The food here is absolutely amazing. Clearly a place I would brag about! Portions are huge...a great place to go and share a meal...or save some for tomorrow, and the next day, and the day after that.

So sad! This place used to be amazing! Never as good as the original but good enough. Went recently only to find out the creamy house Italian dressing was no longer offered! Are you serious and to blame it on Kraft foods for changing the recipe! For years it was house made and to blame it on that is horrible! The works salad isn't the same without it. Needless to say we will never return and the new owners have no clue what they are doing!

Breaking my heart ... I have been eating here for over a decade. It is my go to place for italian. Tonight was a disaster. salad had a "dirt" taste. Asiago chix was bland-this is my favorite dish and super favorable usually but not tonight. Multiple servers at our table-all nice-but not real sure who was actually our server. Orders came out wrong - sauce on ravioli not on the side, sweet tea instead of regular, etc. Waited forever to pay finally went to the hostess and asked to pay. There just were not enough severs and no matter how hard they tried - they couldn't keep up. Sad thing was it wasn't even crowded ... This was during early dinner time with no wait and empty tables....can't imagine how bad the dinner rush was! Sad, really sad - this was an iconic family tradition and it's a shame to see it go down so quickly.

A quaint family owned business. Huge portions at a great price. Perhaps not the most authentic food around but a good experience overall. I've always left full and satisfied and enjoy not sitting elbow to elbow at an overcrowded chain. Nice for a family gathering or an intimate dining experience.

Really good italian food. The bread was great, my meal was awesome, and I loved the ambiance of the bar area. There was a live piano, and the walls are covered in neat artwork and antiques. The service I received was not as nice as I would have expected from a quality place like this, but other members of the waitstaff seemed to be doing a better job, so I'm chalking it up to a fluke. There are two other locations, in Indiana, so I'd still consider this locally owned, and I feel good about giving them my business.

Confused as to why it's being shown as located in Plainfield...when it's location is in Avon (Dan Jones and 36) Anyways the food is good. I love the salads and amount of salad you get for the price. Plus garlic bread and butter... The pasta is alright as well. It's declined in quality a little the last couple of years but I usually get the veggie lasagna and it's a two person sized entree. I've heard very good things about the eggplant parm. and baked ravioli. All in all I would recommend Papa Joe Jr's to someone who wants a better quality Italian experience in Avon than Olive Garden (which is definitely not my favorite but passable). I can't say it's completely a memorable experience though you will leave FULL:)

Papa Joe's is a great family-owned Italian place. Good food, decent wine and a comfortable atmosphere. This is a great spot if you are in the mood for a casual and tasty meal. I LOVE the spaghetti and meat balls. They have this classic down. They also have really good salad dressing, I'd recommend the house creamy Italian or the Bleu Cheese. They also have unlimited hot bread. The cannoli is my favorite, I always save room. My family loves the raviolli. Sometimes they have a piano player on the weekends, very sultry and fun! This is a great spot and reasonably priced.

About Papa Murphy

Papa Murphy is one of the top pizza chains in the United States. Papa Murphy was formed after the merger of two popular local pizzerias namely Papa Aldo's and Murphy's respectively. The trend of "take and bake" pizzerias gained popularity in the United States during the early 90s. The growing popularity these two take and bake pizzerias located in Hillsboro, Oregon and Petaluma, California respectively gave the idea of a possible merger to Terry Collins.

In 1995, Terry Collins consolidated the merger and founded Papa Murphy and expanded the pizza chain across 1300 outlets in the United States and Canada. Customers can relish Papa Murphy pizzas by simply walking into the nearby Papa Murphy outlet or simply order online or call-in to pick up the order later. Some Papa Murphy outlets also feature a drive-thru window where you can pick up your call-in order. Today, Papa Murphy is owned by MTY Food Group. Papa Murphy is the 5th largest Pizza Chain in the United States.

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
