This is your standard fare hibachi restaurant. It's great for entertaining younger kids but leaves a lot to be desired for the adults in the crowd. The hibachi menu is identical to the ones found in similar looking restaurants all across America. The drink menu could be substantially better. The beer options are very limited and the cocktails all are some variation on sake. Despite the fact that there are few places in central Indiana to be served draught Japanese beers or Japanese whiskey, Hirosaki does not capitalize on that. We arrived before our group and were immediately told that we couldn't be seated until all members had arrived. That was understandable but we had to be the ones to ask if we could sit at the bar and have a drink until then. I was given the impression that they may not have offered because the bar staff was being used to fold napkins despite it being 5pm on a Saturday night. If you can't make it to the other parts of town, Hirosaki is serviceable for the west suburbs but it would be worth 20 minutes in the car to go elsewhere for a better experience.

We got to walk right in and be seated. However, it all went downhill from there. Our waitress didn't really fill our drinks. Then our hibachi chef was meh. He didn't really seem to know what he was doing and over cooked all of our food. The chicken was dry, the steak we asked for medium rare was well over well done and the veggies were slightly burned. My friend said his scallops were horrible and rubbery. Maybe the chef was new? But even then, someone should have been there helping him out. I know not all hibachi chefs do tricks but the tables around us got some and our guy didn't do any. The portions were huge and we got a lot of food but it all ended up being wasted. Overall, I feel like I spent a lot of money on food that wasn't very good and I will not EVER be returning.

The food is not good and I would not recommend. When you first walk in the atmosphere is relaxing and there is a nice little pond with coy fish in it. I decided to sit in a booth instead of at the sushi bar or hibachi tables. Soon after being seated I noticed that some paint was chipping off of the walls next to me. There was also a dirty vase on the table with a dusty and broken plastic flower in it for decoration. For my beverage I ordered the hot tea. It was your average tasting Oolong. I ordered the steak entree, some edamame, and a cherry blossom sushi roll for my meal. The Edamame was very good. Not too much salt, just the right amount. Next was the salad which had a good ginger dressing but was on top of what seemed like an iceberg lettuce and carrot mix that you would find in a bag at the grocery store. After that, was the onion soup. I always look forward to this the most because it is a comfort food of mine. Sadly it tasted like fried chicken juice and not really like onion at all. The onions that were in it were oddly mushy. I was not impressed. When the entree arrived I was hopeful that it would be good because it looked fresh. The portion was a bit too big but that seems to be the case at most hibachi restaurants. My steak was good, maybe a bit under seasoned but I would rather it be that than the alternative. Unfortunately the rice was overcooked and way too mushy. The cherry blossom roll was supposed to have crab in it and tuna on top but it seemed to have ground up tuna in it instead of crab. The sushi rice was also overcooked and the tuna tasted old and I didn't eat the rest for fear of getting sick. All in all it was not a good experience and I will not be returning.

I give this place a five star because we were seated quickly for hibachi on a Saturday night, prices were perfect, we ordered a spicey California roll and it was very fresh. For my entre I ordered steak and with that I got soup, salad, steak, fried rice, veggies. It was a ton of food. I took home enough for another meal. Our waitress was super sweet. The chef was hilarious and made dinner an entertaining experience. We will definitely come back!!

After a few years of coming here now, we've seen the service slip and the price increase. The food is still really good, don't get me wrong. The service is spotty, especially if they are very busy. Recently, we purposely ordered sushi rolls well before our entrees, so we could enjoy them. We were pressed to order and ended up being rushed through soup and salad to have everything show up on the table at once. Not a huge issue, but not what we were looking for. The last couple of times we've been here it seems that the overall check has been about $30 higher than it had been previously.

This place is falling apart which is a shame because it has so much potential. Our chef did absolutely none of the cool fire tricks that the kids love :/. Food was decent but our waitress was horrid. Bathroom toilets moved back and forth an inch and had water seeping out underneath. I'd stay away from here.

Well, i cant tell you anything about the food because I left before i could order food. All i can tell you is we left after 15 minutes because no one even took our drink order or came by to let us know they were our server. It was really dirty (menus were dirty with food on them) and the place was pretty empty on a friday night-- never a good sign. I'll be shocked if this place is still around in a year. Gross and understaffed.

Service has gone downhill. Waitresses are slow and rather rude. Have come three times each time missing a dressing or a drink or out of something major. **only for the cook** cooks are fabulous but can't make up for lack of help w bad owners and wait staff. They do great work w what they are given! Sushi is sub par.
(1)Peggy M.
Used to be a favorite for sushi. Loved the sun roll, Boston roll and playboy roll. Last couple times I have gone have been horrible. Sushi was not good at all. Over sauced, rice was over cooked and thick, service wasn't great. Don't think it was servers fault entirely. Not enough servers for crowd. The one time I've gotten habachi grill it was overly salty. Wouldn't recommend

The only reason they got a star was for the interior design. It has a nice little pond with a bridge over it, but the good words end there. Let's start off with the waitresses, I don't even know why they were there. She didn't know what a single thing on the menu was when I asked and the funnier thing was when she went to ask another waitress, she didn't know either and then they went to ask a third one and finally figured it out. The food was mediocre at best and our drinks were never refilled. Left there really disappointed. End rant.

I always come here for a to-go order during my lunch break, so this review is based purely on food. I see some others have complain of bad service. (Although i must add the hostess/host is always very sweet and nice when I stop in.) Their hibachi salmon is delicious. (Price is on the higher side/just by a few dollars/ compared to other places) I love their sushi as well. The raw ones always taste fresh. The cooked ones are unique and tasty! The sushi menu has a lot of variety! My favorite, the Shrimp Tempura Roll here has a hint of spicy!! Yum.
(4)Dawn N.
We probably eat here twice a month rotating between the hibachi grill one time and sushi the next. While it's not fabulous, out of this world food, it is consistently good food and the service is awesome. We always feel like valued patrons when we eat at Hirosaki.
(4)Naser A.
Their food tastes good, but might be missing a few ingredients to kick that japanese taste in. I usually start of with a roll, and get their grill entrees. I love to see the cook preparing my food amd grill it They use garlic, so be careful if you cannot stand the garlic, or causes you problems in the stomach.

Long wait to be seated with reservations, lack luster grill experience, and the wait staff was attentive, but slow. Menu items were fresh, cooked well, and the prices were not bad overall, but there were a series of unexpected up charges for certain menu items normally included at such a place. However, the neat, open decor, unique koi pond bridge in the lobby, and pleasing atmosphere were soon overwhelmed by the average overall dining event. We were placed in a private room for our table of 12, but it was cold even table side. I was more entertained by my company than the grill ninja's antics. From my history, you can see that I try to find something memorable, unique, or positive to pass along with my reviews, but sadly I would not encourage others to sink your chopsticks here for a special occasion. Maintenance meals, a fresh and light lunch, or a simple date night are the limits here. The place has good bones for potential and maybe a hospitality training course would garner better favor from me in the future.

Co-workers took me out for a fun, birthday lunch. However, there was a bit a of a wait. Service was sub-par and the chef didn't do anything cool except for the onion volcano.
(2)Peter P.
It seems like every other week a new Japanese steakhouse (complete with teppanyaki grills) opens. I personally don't see the attraction of the pomp and circumstance so I typically sit at a normal table and order off the regular menu. Hirosaki is pretty generic in that respect. The miso soup was meh. If you blindfolded me and didn't tell me that the salmon was seasoned with curry there would be no way for me to tell. Service wasn't too bad, however I was there for lunch on a weekday so they weren't busy at all.

For the past 2 years this has been our favorite Japanese resturant. Tonight we went with family for dinner and the entire experience was horrible. We waited 30 minutes to be sat and then another 30 before they started cooking because they had one cook and one waitress. All of our meat was undercooked including a piece of chicken that was completely pink in the middle. The biggest reason I will never return though is a ROACH crawled across the table in front of me. I'm very sad to see one of my favorite places go down hill so fast.
(1)Veronica O.
This place is pretty awesome! Granted it's like every other hibachi grill you've been to, but it's still pretty good. They cooked my steak perfectly and the guy passed around the extra meat even if you didn't order it, which I liked. So if you like hibachi you'll like this place.
(4)Tim D.
Hirosaki is a pretty good Hibachi restaurant. I see many complained about the service but our waitress was very good and kept up with our drinks and bringing our courses on time. Chef was entertaining and food was very good. Only have one very small complaint; the "Hot Green Tea" was a Bigalow tea bag in a pretty nice tea pot not a "real" Japanese tea.
(4)Joey H.
Took 10minutes to be seated, the waitress was unbelievably rude, website menu didn't match the store menu, wouldn't be surprised to see them out of business soon.
(1)Amber B.
Close to home and I find the environment delightful! Favorite spot for lunch during the week ;) our chef was very friendly and humorous! Keep up the good work:)
(5)Sabrina R.
I've been to Hirosake with friends on numerous occasions: both for hibachi and sushi. The staff is friendly and the food is delicious. With that said, there have been a few times when the waitress has been a bit slow or doesn't visit the table as often as some customers (including myself) would like. For the most part they do a good job, but if they mess up your order or if you need something, you may be waiting a while to get a hold of someone to fix the issue.

After unbelievably and absurdly slow service time and time again, it just isn't right for me to keep this review at 4 stars. The final straw was our sushi visit to Hirosaki last weekend: 5:37p ... walked in the door and were escorted to our booth 6:12p ... waitress took our order (just as we were getting ready to leave) 6:44p ... received smoked salmon nigiri that we ordered as an appetizer 6:51p ... received the remaining 4 maki rolls The sushi is so good here, it's a true crime that they take such a long time to get it to your table. 35 minutes to even visit our table to take our order?!? On this evening, they had literally ** no other customers ** on the non-hibachi side besides a table of 12. I understand that a table that large commands a lot of attention and resources ... but that shouldn't make you completely ignore everyone else, especially if that's only a table of two! We got 10% off for our troubles that night but it simply wasn't worth it despite the excellent food. I love the sushi here but simply cannot recommend the restaurant in general because of the consistently awful service. We'll still order sushi from Hirosaki, but it will now always be takeout so we don't have to commit an entire evening to dinner.

Date night on Friday night and decided to try this restaurant out. Would have preferred a quiet table due to being child free for the evening, instead we were seated with another family with a baby. The chef's showmanship wasn't what I've seen at other steakhouses, but was acceptable. The food was prepared as requested, with the exception of food allergies. Can't eat mushrooms and had to watch closely as the rice and steaks were being prepared. I wasn't able to accept the vegetables. We may go back, or try other steakhouses in the area.

Stopped in here for a quick sushi fix on my way to a show. Thanks to the other reviews on Yelp for pointing this place out to me! The restaurant is huge, and when we got there we were the only ones in the place! We sat at the sushi bar, but they did have hibachi style tables if you wanted to go that route. Lots of sushi options here including rolls & sashimi. Everything was very delicious and pretty to look at.
(5)Matthew R.
Wouldn't give it a star if I didn't have to. Worst customer service I've ever received. I never received my sushi order. The waitress only came to our table once after taking our order. The manager was completely useless.
(1)Ashley C.
My boyfriend took me here for my birthday and it was great! We shared the giant sushi boat! It was wonderful and artfully arranged and presented. We received amazing service! They also do Hibachi which is a great fun time! The prices are pretty typical, and can be a bit on the pricey side. The food, drinks, and service were great though! I will definitely be back!

My husband and I had a bad experience with wait time once....but since then they've done a better job. They now serve beer which made him happy. The hibachi grill chefs do a great job of catering to children and making it fun. We enjoy family night there more than date night although date night can be fun at the sushi bar. Overall I'd recommend it.

My wife and I love going on dates here.the atmosphere is awesome. There is a freaking bridge going over water in the restaurant...how cool is that? Check this place out if you love sushi

Came here last night for a family dinner as most of our family hasn't been to a restaurant like this before. Everyone enjoyed the grill chef (not sure what their title is) and he kept us engaged and entertained. The waiter service was a little disappointing as we finally had to request drink refills as he was walking by. He did come back after that instance though and check in on us. No plates were ever removed from the area, which I thought was odd. The actual food was a little bland I thought. Yes, the presentation was good, but I just felt it had no real taste unless I poured my entire ginger sauce on it. The sushi was pretty good though, as we shared a couple rolls with the family as an appetizer.

Meh. A truly uninspiring Japanese restaurant. Their koi pond covered in fencing and chains truly sums it up. Their wait staff was rude, they tried to seat us with another party, and resented it when we asked to sit by ourselves. I'm sorry, but I didn't want to spend my anniversary next to some loud obese family. The food was weak and tasteless, and practically cold. Not a fan, and I won't be coming back.

Definitely not the place to bring a large group to for dinner. We arrived for our 7pm reservation, and found the restaurant to be very busy (it was a Friday night after all). The restaurant was actually near 75% capacity for the first time in my memory, however it was woefully understaffed. We were led to a private dining room at about 7:20, which allowed us to be conveniently forgotten until the hostess took our drink order at about 7:45. At this point we asked that the overhead fan be turned on, since we were sweltering from the heat and fumes. The hostess instead turned off the hibachi grill (mistake). Our cook showed up at about 8:15, at which point he asked us if we had ordered drinks. He hurried off to get a waiter who had no idea of what we had previously ordered, so we all re-ordered our drinks. Now our cook realized that the grill had been turned off, so we had to wait while it heated back up. Our waiter returned with a portion of our drink order (keep in mind that I was already disappointed in the fact that they do not serve beer). I ordered my drink again for the third time. I hate to be a whiner, but we ended up waiting nearly two hours to eat a mediocre dinner...and I never did get my drink.

I guess that slightly pathetic is what I should expect of a Japanese place in Avon, but still I was disappointed. I'm not saying "its not like Chicago", I'm just saying, its not quality food. I respect that they actually serve dishes and not just sushi like some "Japanese" places, but what they did serve was mediocre at best. The chicken in my dish was overcooked, and the tempura was greasy. The seaweed salad was good, but the portion was disappointingly small, and the california rolls that came with my meal tasted old (like they'd been sitting in the refrigerator all day). The waitstaff was just plain bad. They took over 10 minutes to seat our table despite the fact that the restaurant was almost completely empty. Our waiter ignored us, and barely spoke english, but I got the impression that they didn't speak Japanese either.

I brought my husband and two sons (older, not little kids) to try this place out. We live on the north side where great sushi abounds (Maneki Neko, H2O Sushi, Sushiyama) but found ourselves in Avon for dinner. Hirosaki is a combo sushi and tapanyaki (steakhouse) restaurant. You can choose to sit at a grill table and watch the chef put on a show as he prepares your meal, or a regular table. You can order from the full menu regardless of where you sit. For appetizers, we tried the seared ahi tuna. The tuna was fresh and rich, but tempered with a nice lemony vinegar spritz. It was different from the usual soy seasoning, and gave the tuna a lightness that I really liked. The miso soup was standard, but the soy cubes in it were surprising sweet, as though they'd been marinated in something syrupy? Not a big fan. I ordered the Hirosaki sushi plate, which comes with 7 pieces of sashimi (mix of tuna, hamachi and albacore?) and 7 pieces of nigiri (tuna, salmon, octopus, shrimp) and a roll (basic krab, avocado and cucumber). It was all good and fresh, but I wish I could've had a more interesting roll with it. My husband had the seared sea diver scallops. They were nicely seared but tasted more of teriyaki than the spicy red chili sauce they claimed. The boys ordered mixed tempura entree (very good, vegetables cooked perfectly, several good sized pieces of shrimp and calamari) and chicken teriyaki (basic plate you'd expect anywhere, but he liked it). I would definitely go back, but next time try their specialty rolls. It's nice to know there's decent sushi in Avon ... but I wouldn't make a special trip for it.

Does a Kitten always come with dinner? Dinner out with family led us back to Japanese...and Hirosaki is the place in Avon for Japanese. Walking in we heard a sound that was loud but rather than explore we headed on in. You have your choice of a table or the hibachi seating. We chose the hibachi seating more for the children's entertainment. You feel like you have some room sitting here...they don't cram you in, and the set up is very comfortable. Service is stellar...no waiting game. The entertainment of the chef is enjoyed by all and the food is quite tasty. If you have dined on Japanese you will find it to be a step above the norm, and the fact if you are a sushi eater will make the event quite pleasurable, with a full sushi menu. The Chicken Fried Rice is the best I have had. I don't know what they do different but it's the best. You don't feel rushed and the service continues throughout the meal after the chef has departed. For Avon the atmosphere is pretty good. Avon is a main road of chain restaurants one right after an other so this gem thrown in is a nice segway to different. We left content and the price is a little high but you don't feel it was not money well spent. The comment in the beginning about a kitten with dinner....well the sound we heard going in was a very small kitten someone had decided to leave behind and he was missing his comfort zone. Well now his comfort zone is in my living room...poor little thing couldn't live in a parking lot on a main street for long. Let's hope it has a long and happy life with me, but one kitten is enough I don't want another on my next trip back...and there will be a next trip.

I've sat at alot of teppenyaki tables and these are among the best. Also for lunch they have very good specials. I had the terriyaki chicken and it was perfectly balanced (not over sauced). The Koi pond is also great to linger at on the way out.

Good food but terrible service. I had the soft shell crab as an appetizer and the sushi dinner as my entree. The soft shell crab was good but barely soft-shell....the shell was a little thick and almost inedible in some places. It was a hard-shelled soft-shelled crab. It could've been a bad one that was past the soft shell point and thy wouldn't be completely there fault. That said the batter wasn't too heavy and was pretty tasty. The sushi dinner was quite good. I was a little hesitant because Indy isn't exactly known as the sushi Capitol of the world but the quality of the fish was good...especially the eel. I'd probably give the food a 4 star rating. On the flip side, the service was a lousy 1 star disappointment. My entree came about 20 minutes after I had finished my miso soup which is astounding because the place wasn't packed and I'm slow eater. Also, the soft-shell crab came out AFTER the meal was served....odd.
