Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

For some reason, I seem to find myself at Pepe's with my friend Kelly. It could be that it's right between our homes. It could be that we like chips and salsa. Most likely, it's because their margaritas are strong. Oh, and they have coupons. Hold on a second, let's talk about the Pepe's coupons. At least three times, we have had our server argue with us honoring our coupons. The most memorable was the Sweetest Day Incident of 2011. Here's how it went down: The Dude decided he was going to go see a Megadeth show in Milwaukee with his brother, leaving me alone on a Saturday night. Luckily, Kelly was free and we decided to meet at Pepe's. She had a coupon that allowed us to buy one entree and get one free with the purchase of two drinks. We ordered our food and drinks and enjoyed our meal. Then, when we tried to pay, they wouldn't honor our coupon because it said "Not Valid on Major Holidays." Are you kidding me? Sweetest Day is a major holiday? The banks are open, mail is delivered and nobody gets the day off work (except those who don't work on weekends). We're talking about a holiday that I'm convinced was concocted by the chocolate and card people to move more goods. After arguing with both our server and the manager, they finally honored the coupon, but the whole thing left an awful taste in my mouth. We've also had a few other incidents where they fought us over coupon use. Interestingly, when we went last night, they had no problem honoring my free birthday entree coupon, even though the one that was sent to me said "Happy Birthday 2011" despite being sent on April 23, 2012. One more thing on the coupons, I promise - since all Pepe's are individually owned, not all locations will take the same coupons. Last night was actually the best experience I've had at Pepe's. The waiter was friendly, our chips were refilled frequently, the food came out quickly and our margaritas (or "mugaritas," as Pepe's calls their large size) were strong and tasty. Keep it up, Pepe's!

So very bad! Wasted money on this place, slow service, really bad food!

My wife and I have been eating here for about 5 years and have always had good food and great service. However the service has been getting worse, my wife went in and ordered chips and salsa to go, they told her there's a $10 minimum to use her debit card and her order was about $8. The manger told her she could use her card this time but the new minimum beginning July 1st would be $15 and walked away with an attitude. OK dude, no other restaurants in the area have a $15 dollar debit card minimum, especially when Pepe's meals average about $9. That's fine though I will get my Mexican food fix from Burrito Loco on Janes where the food is better and the attitude is nicer.

The wife and myself dined here last evening. It's been a little over 6 years since we have ate at a Pepe's. My wife's birthday was this past Thursday and I suggested Pepe's since she grew up on Mexican food at a Pepe's. I was hesitant to go, due to what alot of the stores are known for...lackluster food and service. Personally I've never has a bad time at Pepe's, now or in the past. Searching reviews here the last two days I decided my best bet was the Woodridge location. And boy I was pleased!! We got there about 6:30 on a Saturday evening and were seated immediately. We were given water and chips and salsa right away. And the salsa was really delish. 1 star!! Our server took our drink order and was back in less than 5 minutes. 2 stars!! Took our meal order about 10 minutes later, after we looked over our menus. I ordered the Baja Shrimp burrito dinner, and my wife had Enchiladas Cozumel. We also ordered two Pina Coladas with the dinner order. Server was back 5 minutes later with the beverages. 3 stars!! We got about half way through our Colada's and the food was out. This is all within 30 minutes of sitting down. I was surprised it took such short time to get the meal that quickly. My dish was steaming hot and excellent. The wife's enchiladas were good, but the crab meat was imitation crab meat. Well...what can you do for $10.95. Even though it wasn't true crab, it was still very tasty. We both enjoyed our dinners. 4 stars!! We had the fried ice cream for dessert, and that was a nice change from your typical ice cream dessert. Took less than 45 minutes for drinks, meals, and dessert. Our served was friendly and took a few times to stop by and check in on how we were doing. With that being said, Pepe's earned themselves a 5 star rating from us!! We were back home and relaxing with a movie in less than an hour and half, all on a Saturday night, which was great. I really recommend this location for anyone looking for a good meal and good service.

My family has been going to this location for years, and we really like it. My favorite is the chicken and steak fajitas on corn tortillas, and their salsa is excellent. Staff has always been friendly and efficient. The value has typically been very good and more so if you have a coupon or go for 1/2 price margaritas.

I'm a huge fan of Mexican food and so are my family members so we decided to take a try at this place one evening. Needless to say, it was delicious and filling. I ordered the enchiladas and was completely satisfied. Another note, my family and I cannot eat pork products or anything cooked in lard and the restaurant was ready to accommodate our needs. We really appreciated this. I definitely cannot wait until we return for another round!
(5)Mike P.
I highly recommend checking out of their Dank Memes. Extensive collection of ultra rare pepes.
(5)Russ Z.
We have gone to this one for 25 years it was recently sold and now the food is gone completely down hill this was one of my favorites. The service was good, the food was good and reasonably priced. NOW a complete difference I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. so sad I really liked PePe's and We gave them quite a few times to get it wight but they keep lowering the quality of food. I guess its time to move on and find a new place
(1)Jamie S.
Service is terrible. They brought us a very small basket of chips for 4 people. A refill is $1.99. We waited over 15 minutes for wait staff to come to the table. Then waited and additional 30 minutes for our food. Once our food arrived it was tasty but the wait was terrible!
(2)Andy C.
Just had a great family meal here. I was worried about other reviews i saw about customer service issues....but i have to say, the customer service was fantastic! We were seated immediately and had salsa and chips served within seconds! Our waitress was very nice and the food was the best mexican food ive had in a long time! Will most definitely eat here again!
(5)Jesus P.
Service was slow. Took forever to be seated. Ordered mango margarita but got a plain. Will admit to its potency.
(1)Chris M.
Needed lunch really quick, stopped in here. The food is just like every other Pepe's: bland and mediocre. Surprisingly, our service was fantastic. Our waitress was very attentive and pretty funny. But, in the end, it's Pepe's, not really deserving of anything more than two stars.
(2)Kate O.
Love Pepe's! We dined here last night. We had a party of 10, which was accommodated pretty well. I am kicking myself for forgetting our waitress's name because she was so sweet and great with everything. Food came out hot and pretty quick considering the restaurant was full. I always get filled up on chips and salsa and margaritas so I can never finish my meal, so I am definitely enjoying my left overs this afternoon.
(5)Justin R.
Food is ok: very greasy, heavy, but not consistent. I have been there twice and I ordered the same thing. First time was enjoyable despite the greasiness, which I should probably expect with Mexican food. The second time was not as great. Food did not have any flavor, especially the chicken, which was poorly seasoned. We enjoyed the chips and salsa and the service is usually good (been there twice).
(3)Ani C.
This is one of my favorite spots for margaritas! They have great deals on Tuesdays (1/2 price)! The meals are large in size and you will typically have some to bring home. I have been pleased with every dish I've ever gotten and the service is friendly. Contrary to what some have said, it's endless chips and salsa (they do not charge)

I have been going here for about 15 years and it was always one of the better Pepe's around. What happened recently? Change of ownership? Don't care to keep customers happy? Whatever it is, it's not good. Three times already bad experiences and it's not the taste of the food. That has remained constant. Service? Not alright to wait 45-60 mms. for food when it isn't busy. Definitely not alright to take a long time to bring drinks. The prices have gone up. Fine. It does everywhere. It is not good to bring portion sizes down while upping the prices. Also, please give respectable servings of guac and sour cream like you had previously with the dinners. We got probably a tablespoon with our enchiladas. We asked for some more and were charged a dollar. We didn't order extra. We only wanted what it usually came with. Water refills. Why do we have to ask three times? Please go back to being the Pepe's we liked so much. Change for the worse is not in your favor.

Service was horrible. The hostess said it would only be 15 minutes for a table. We had 8, 3 of which under age 6. Half an hour later the hostess said it would still be 15 more minutes. Numerous parties had come and gone with parties as large as ours. We kept on getting skipped over because the hostess didn't see our name at top of the list. Told we still had to wait longer so of course we left. Maybe the food is okay but I will not be trying to find out any time soon.

It's been a while since I did a review but after eating here last night I felt inspired to warn others to save their money and eat elsewhere First off their Soda is god awful, they must have really old lines, 1 sip of my RC and I knew this establishment could care less about the products they serve, there is No way a manager could taste this and think it's acceptable to serve. The food was mediocre, the servings were small and the waitress acted like she was put out for having to take our order. So far I have eaten at 4 Pepe's in my life and they have all been crap, yesterday will be the last time I eat at any Pepe's ever again!
(1)David H.
Very disappointed picked up to go. The cashier was flustered and slow helping a couple questions while I was trying to pay. After I was about to receive food when I reminded her about rice water and she sent my food back to wait while they got me 1 rice water.... Waited almost 5 minutes and what he'd them take care of numerous others till they poured my rice water out of premixed large container. Gave me everything to go. I tried rice water in parking lot and almost puked. Taste of inscence and to much ... Cinnamon I think couldn't even drink and took it home to throw away. Very disappointed

Poor excuse for Mexican food. I hate coming here for friends because the food is nothing special at all. If I am forced to go here I just drink and eat chips. The food doesn't have flavor and you can tell it is low quality food. There are too many good Mexican food places to eat that are the same price then wasting money going here.
(1)Candice G.
In my heart I want to give it 3 stars because I can remember it being much better last year but after our recent visit have to give it 2. The last time my bf and I were there our server seemed very mad at us. We later figured out that she was prob in a pissy mood because all of her tables were trashy a-holes. The booth behind us was talking about how he was going to "hit" his girl's booty later on that night. And the table in front of us was talking about how they should rent an RV and spoke a bunch of herb while they travel... then after one of the women went through her purse she remarked how she had found the roach clip she had been missing. This is while a maybe 4 year old child is also at their table. Disgusting, disgusting, disgusting. The food is okay now, very American-Mexican. But it's really hard to get past the other patrons that go there (and no volume control regarding their inside voices). Oh, and it seems like they don't really clean it anymore. It's not what it once was.

I've been to Pepe's locations a few times and, while the food wasn't the best, it was certainly above average, and I never had a problem with service. With that in mind, I took my wife to this Pepe's so she could get a taste of [slightly more] authentic Mexican food. We probably won't be visiting this location again. The service was reasonable (not as good as at other locations, but okay). But the food was just awful. The refried beans DEFINITELY were not fresh; they tasted no different than the canned, microwaved crap. Everything was greasy and either bland (the rice) or salty (the chicken taco meat). There was no reason for a chicken dish to be greasy. Above all - we got sick! We had to rush home and dash straight to the bathroom. The only aspects keeping me from rating this place are the low prices, the variety of the menu, and the fact that this location was pretty clean (all things considered). But that's not going to make me necessarily want to return here.

My husband and I have been coming to this Pepe's for about 5 years. I think it is really good food, we always leave satisfied. The place is always packed starting at 6pm on the weekends and Friday night. I've tried a lot of the menu items and have liked everything I've ever gotten. They have really good chips and salsa that every table gets at no additional charge. The ambiance is just normal as compared to other area restaurants. I like the decor in the back section - high sealing with Mexican decor. The wait staff has always been friendly, no major issues. I really enjoy coming here and we frequently have buy 1 get 1 free coupons from our Entertainment book and local coupons that come in the mail. We carry out from here too. They package everything nicely to take home.
(5)Wendy F.
Pepe's is great for basic Mexican food at a reasonable price. It's close to home for us - and I do really like the Chili Relleno.
(3)Teri E.
My family and I have been going to Pepe's for years. The servers are always friendly and efficient. The food is EXCELLENT, especially their homemade salsa! You truly can't get a better margarita! Half price Margarita Tuesdays are the best days to go! Definitely a great value for your money.
(5)Jessica M.
Not much to say, I'm just not much of a fan. I was not impressed with the food or the slow and poor service. I won't be going here again - there are so many better places out there.
(2)Eric L.
This Pepe's is usually on top of their game but not today. The guacamole and pico de gallo were not fresh. Actually nothing that was served was fresh, it was obvious it was left over from the night before. The waiter was horrific! We come here a lot because it's the only decent Mexican food in the area but today it was a huge disappointment. We even cleared our table and checked ourselves out. There are many other places I can eat fresh food and receive great service. I will give another try but after this experience they're on their last chance with me.
(2)Kristine M.
We've been coming here on and off for years because the inside of the restaurant is cute and the food is usually decent. There are also coupons on their website. One thing I don't understand is why do they have to have two larger than life cardboard cutouts of a woman in a bikini advertising beer in their small lobby?!? Isn't this supposed to be a family establishment? I come here with my two small daughters. It's bad enough for young girls nowadays being bombarded with the over-sexualization of women by the media. I'd rather not have to start my dinner having to explain to my daughters why the heck they have these gigantic images in a restaurant. I sure hope the management reads this and takes these down. We won't be coming back until they are.
(1)Louise J.
My family and I have been going here for over 20 years and have always had great service and good food. However, in the last several months every time we go there the service is horrible. I don't know what happened but most of the staff has changed, and they are slow and rude. We were there today and will not be returning until the summer is over to reevaluate the service. It's a shame! We tried this restaurant again in August of 2014 and service was slow, rude, and food was bland. We now drive out to Homer Glen and that Pepes is fantastic. The margaritas are wonderful nothing like what they serve in woodridge. its just a shame.
(2)Laura C.
I've been going here for years, like before I could even walk. The food isn't completely authentic but it's still tasty. Chips and salsa are piping hot. Margaritas are always delicious. Try the azul margaritas on the rocks!
(5)Jeff M.
One of my favorite Pepe's in the area...besides the one out in Yorkville. The people here are really nice and they have better margaritas than any other Pepes around. It's right off of 355 so it's easy to get to. Definitely the place to go if you want more american-mexican food. Recommended!
(5)Larry D.
A few years ago this was one of my favorites. The service was good, the taco dinners were tasty and reasonably priced. HOWEVER, recently the service has been spotty, the taco dinners have been cheapened in quality and the prices are no longer reasonable.I will not return but,I have found other Mexican restaurants that are far better. SO SAD.
(1)Bill O.
Very good all round, delighted to upgrade my review, long overdue I may add!
(5)Andres D.
Now this updated review just kicked it up to 5 stars. The carne asada cooked medium was perfection. My RC cola refills are always at a moments notice and quick. Now I understand there has been some negative chatter about this place in other reviews. However I honestly don't experience it. Staff is friendly and the extra mile they go bringing me my add ons like peppers and sauce is always with a smile. This location does get their fair share of interesting customers and some loud ones too. But if you order a margarita or 2 you will drink yourself some ear muffs.
(5)Truth M.
(New update for Oct 2014) I had read all the reviews but I have not heard anyone say the ceiling tiles are nasty dirty just look up. The food prices went up but you need to redo your place, Still have the old telephone wood thing from the old days on the wall by the bathrooms (Not Safe) Lady's bathroom could use a new sink. I'm not saying the food sucks ,but the place looks bad as sh*t. Really look around. Pardon me but I like the place to look good as well. I don't feel like up chucking my meal Geez's already. Get it together owners it seems like you gave up. I know more then you people even know about that place and the owner. Ya you may think one thing .but I know the truth big time!!!!! I wish more people would Yelp. We work hard for our money Perhaps the ceiling tiles are that dirty color but the place really needs to be updated.

The food was fresh and tasty during my visit to Pepe's lunch buffet. It had typical Mexican food such as taco fixings, rice, beans, salad and fruit. The addition of BBQ chicken wings to the buffet table was quite good, too. The atmosphere was as it was years ago when I had visited last - nothing to rave about at all. (For improved atmosphere, visit the one in Homer Glenn which is newer and more spacious with its huge bar area where you can dine, too.) However, the best part of the Woodridge visit was the incredible service. The waitress' name, according to the printed-out bill, was CRIST (perhaps short for Christina). She was very attentive and friendly. The only negative might be that the $8.95 lunch buffet price increases more than 25% if you order a soda. The soda cost an additional $2.35!! So, the buffet with a beverage and tax came out to $12.20. With a decent tip for great service, one's bill can easily come out to $15 - $16 for lunch. But, all in all, a pleasant dining experience with good food and great service.

There's a soft spot in my heart for Pepe's restaurants. Maybe it's because it reminds me of when I was a kid and the rare occasions my family got Mexican food, this was our go to. Or maybe it was the countless Friday evenings I spent with friends for cheap margaritas and dinner when I was in college. Either way, it's comfort food to me. Yes, there are plenty of other Mexican restaurants that have far more authentic food - I enjoy them as well. But still, about every month or two, my partner and I get a craving for Pepe's. When we first came to this location, we noticed one thing that set this location apart from the others we've been to - the bar menu. My guess is there is a strong Cuban influence from management here. Many of their drinks are made with Agave Nectar instead of sugar... this really does make a more balanced drink in my opinion and their mojitos will always keep me coming back here. Particularly the coconut, made with Cruzan. To address the service 'issues' mentioned in other reviews. Typically, we get good service here. Usually very prompt and attentive. However, our latest trip here, this Friday, we were nearly ready to walk out before we even got drinks ordered. We sat for over 10 minutes with water chips and salsa... but had not been greeted by our server. When he finally did grace us with his presence, I quickly dubbed him "flash Gordon" as he literally stopped at our table and was gone before we could really complete thoughts. We never got refills on our water the entire visit. Frankly, we felt rushed by our waiter the entire time... even though we spent most of our visit waiting on him. The restaurant was about half capacity during our time there.. so really, there was no excuse for this service. Even though he apologized twice for making us wait, there was no real reason for it.
(3)Chirag P.
Bad service, food is ok. Also, we had a coupon to which the waitress said we could not use because I ordered one of their 1/2 price margaritas. Kind of didn't make sense to me since the margarita deal was this individual Pepe's special and not some kind of promo chain-wide. Anyways... it was more about the poor service in terms of no one coming to refresh waters or just taking a while to even place the orders or collect finished plates.
(2)Michael F.
Only stopped by for a couple drinks, so skip this review if you want food recommendations. I had the sangria. The price was decent, but the glass was pretty small and mostly filled with ice. It didn't seem like there was too much wine in the mix, but if you enjoy a really fruity flavor in your 'gria then you'll enjoy this sangria. My friend had margaritas. I sampled it and I would definitely recommend the 'rita over the sangria. It was a larger portion, they put in plenty of tequila (or so my friend said after we left), and it tasted pretty good. Despite my low rating I'd definitely go back to try the food just because the service was good and it's a pretty good location. However, I'd definitely want to explore other Mexican options in the area if you're looking for some drinks with your meal.
(2)Katherine B.
Great margaritas and salsa. Service is always fast and courteous and the food is so good.
(5)Max B.
Food was fairly good. Service was sloooowww.
(2)Theresa C.
Okay so I'll admit it. I swore I would never go back to this location. But it was Christmas time and I wasn't paying. We get in and are immediately greeted by the waitress. We then are seated and order a pitcher of margaritas. The waitress comes back with three glasses full and the whole pitcher as well. Now as we drink she keeps continuously filling our glasses up. I accept her generosity but I like to know how much I am drinking because I have to drive home as well. So I wasn't too keen on the constant refills. Other than that, she was extremely outgoing. By the end of the meal, our table knew her whole life story. It restored my faith in this Pepe's a little but I still wouldn't go out of my way to go here.
(3)Jessica D.
When I moved from a few years of life in Mexico this was my favorite Mexican restaurant in the area. It still is! The atmosphere is original and the food authentic tasting. The staff are very professional and do a good job, although sometimes the line to get a seat gets a little crazy, i still think it's worth it. Good jumex, horchata, margaritas and beers... nice chips and salsa, good flautas and enchiladas, goood desserts yum! Try the pastel tres leches.
(4)Cari B.
I've been meaning to stop into Pepe's for months. I had pretty high hopes and was pleasantly surprised when I finally made it there last night. First impressions: The inside decor is nice, with a small indoor fountain, cozy booths and high ceilings. It is bigger than it appears from the outside, and obvious they paid a lot of attention to detail in an attempt to make the restaurant's interior reflect the Mexican fare they serve. We were seated right away, and the chips and salsa arrived to the table immediately after we did. The chips aren't anything super noteworthy or out of the ordinary, but are nonetheless really good. The salsa isn't overly spicy but still very flavorful and tasty -- just my speed, since I love salsa but can't handle excessive heat. I ordered the chicken quesadillas for dinner, which was a good amount of food for $8. I've had many experiences with bad, too-dry chicken at Mexican restaurants, but this chicken was really good. As a bit of a margarita fanatic, I came in with seemingly insurmountable expectations, but was really impressed with Pepe's margs. We went on a Tuesday, when they offer the very cheap half-priced margarita special -- $3 for 16-ounce regular and $3.40 for 16-ounce flavored. I got a raspberry frozen margarita and it was awesome -- dare I say, one of the best margaritas I've had. The one downside is the restaurant's lack of outdoor seating, but it gets an easy five stars from me in spite of that for its quality and speed of service, delicious and affordable food and margaritas, and great atmosphere and ambiance. I'll definitely be going back.
(5)J M.
Okay, this pepe's tastes way differnet than any other I have ever been to. The salsa isn't fresh, the beef for the tacos is gross and the service stinks. The patrons in here are loud, and don't even try to go during the buffet at lunchtime, the "suits" will practically beat you out of the way for a damned taco. Not the best food for the price!
