Valley Lodge Tavern is a welcome addition to Wilmette. Still working out the kinks but off to a strong start. Pros: Bar and dining room design and layout vastly superior to its predecessor. Professional and courteous wait staff. Reasonable prices. Fine beer selection. Diverse menu with old standbys and some creative twists Philly cheese steak rolls appetizer are a novelty well worth a try. Making a strong effort to do something special. Cons Food is solid but uninspired in execution. Lacking a bit in flavor and style. All in all looking forward to trying this place again. High hopes for it.

Love the atmosphere and location. The hamburgers are delicious. I find the wait staff pleasant and the full menu is very well written and prices reasonable. A place for the entire family. I ate at the restaurant with my spouse and his parents and they love it. However they stopped going since there favorite bar tender left or retired.. Anyway it never stopped me from going in for a meal. I may not drink alcohol, but at least I can enjoy a meal and leave with a smile.

Really good food and mixed drinks. It is loud as the dinner crowd fills up the place. As of 8/14 they don't have all the bugs out yet as they delivered the wrong salad entree. Service was otherwise excellent. Only the noise would make me hesitate to go again.

Won't be back. Nothing changed since my last review. Still very slow service. Today the server explained to me that it was taking so long for my grilled cheese because they burned the first one. Finally got my sandwich, but the fries are dried out and burned! They could've made me some fresh fries when they were remaking my sandwich. I think the server should've caught it before bringing it to me.

Truly amazing food with wonderful service. Owners really seem to put much elbow grease into making sure customers come first. I look forward to my next visit and the Philly cheesesteak rolls!!! A must have!!!

Update - was contacted very quickly after posting the below review asking that we try them again. Mistakes happen - and as I said the place is usually packed so our experience likely was an outlier. The quick response speaks well of them. Will post another update after trying them again. Original review: Place is usually packed - bar looks nice - food is nothing special. Had fish and chips that was maybe one step above fish sticks and tater tots. Service OK but again nothing great.

Just wanted to compliment the staff after what must've been a record-breaking night for them. It was Memorial Day and the weather was beautiful, so we thought we'd hit downtown Wilmette for a bite. Many families had the same idea. Unfortunately (but understandably), ALL of the restaurants downtown were closed. Except the Valley Lodge Tavern. So they had a line out the door, every table full inside and despite being really well staffed, it was obvious they were overwhelmed by the crowds. Happily, they have pagers, so we put our name in, took a pager and strolled over to hang out by the village hall fountain while we waited. Once inside and seated, I was struck by how much poise the staff had in what had to be stressful circumstances. There wasn't an empty seat in the entire place and yet there were no terse, harried or tired-looking waiters or waitresses. Yes, the food took a long time, but when it arrived, it was really good. (In the meantime, they had apologized-- without us complaining-- and graciously offered a free drink or dessert.) Any restaurant should envy the staff this place has hired. They were unexpectedly buried in an avalanche of customers and NOT ONE of the six servers we interacted with had anything less than a smile on their face and a cheerful attitude. If I had been an employee there tonight, I would've been losing my mind. Give them a raise! We'll be back, hopefully when it's less busy (no offense). Food was great. Can't imagine how good the staff must be on a regular night. Not sure if it's always so noisy-- if so, some sound absorbing tile on the ceiling would go a long way. The owner should make a list of who worked there on Memorial Day for dinner and do everything they can to retain those employees. Really impressive.

Walking in, you notice it's a slightly elegant place, not what I was expecting. I came in just for a beer and ended up having two and a bowl of soup. While it is somewhat more fancy than your average bar and restaurant, it seems there's something for everyone on the menu. The sandwiches and apps look appealing to those looking for a more casual evening, or just hanging out to watch sports near the bar. On the other hand, Valley Lodge had a decent array of entrees if you're looking for a more intimate night out. With beer options like Half Acre, Greenbush and 3 Floyd's, I'm looking forward to coming back and trying more than the chicken tortilla soup.

So I am definitely a fan of this place. Came during lunch on a weekend where the place was remarkably quiet. Came with a really good friend and 4 kids. Eclectic order to be honest with one kid having Calamari, one having chicken tenders, one having a burger and the 4th with Mac N Cheese. I had the BBQ sliders and he had the burger. All in all, every single thing was a hit. My kids actually loved some of my BBQ pork! This is our neighborhood restaurant and I want to make sure that everyone understands that the food is fresh with healthy portions and it was yummy. And best part is that the kids ate every morsel! I am giving 5 stars because this is a real alternative for us who want a good spot in town.

Came back and had a much better experience! The server was friendly and didn't rush us. We were able to eat outside and the ambience was nice. The drinks were solid. Mojito was perfect. Lost one star as the grouper sandwich could have had a bigger piece of fish. That being said the teriyaki stir fry was enough for a second meal. Nicely done. Looked at dessert and next time may get the carrot cake. Relaxing meal. Yum I will go back.

Decided to give their new Wilmette location a try after eating at their glenview locale last week. Soup (french onion) was dynamite. I was startled 2 skewer chicken kabob entree was $19. But I have to say it was otherwise was a monster portion with probably well over 1lb on the plate. Seasoned to perfection and juicy. Wish it were flame grilled rather than flat grilled nonetheless still delicious and rice was to die for. Wife raved about freshness of chopped salad and how good blackened chicken was. I think the place would benefit from a separate and smaller lunch menu with perhaps more value based choices. Otherwise, quality and freshness is evident here. Recommended.

Tried this place tonight for the first time. Loved the club like vibe. The noise level was very intense. The drink order was wrong. I'm sure because of the noise level. My husband ordered soup and an entree. The soup was brought out after the entree. My burger was under cooked and fries were cold. Noticed the next table received their salad and entree together. Their looks told the story too. Clearly, their wait staff and kitchen needs some training. I will have second thoughts about coming back.

I've been here a couple of times and every time I went hoping that it would be better. I know a lot of people like this place but I was underwhelmed. I had a burger that was just okay, nothing special...I feel like it was missing something. Great atmosphere however and the service is always good, great place to spend a dinner out on the weekend and patio seating is always great on a nice day.

Thumbs up from the family for Valley Lodge Tavern. The real test was to see if the kids would eat there-and they all found things they liked. The service was excellent. The servers knew the menu and beer selections. Our server even came back to the table to double check that he had our order correct. Water glasses were always full and we got an apology from one of the owners when one of our orders came out a minute later than the rest. This is very nice in comparison to an Evanston place we frequent. The food was good- not great, but solid. The beer selection was very good. They had at least a few IPA choices. I would add some Temperance Beer- but that's just me. I liked the atmosphere. It's a nice tavern/restaurant mix. It was a little loud, but they are working on the acoustics and it really didn't bother me too much.

Such a great neighborhood gem! Warm, inviting atmosphere with great tvs. Well above average bar food with a menu expansive enough for a dinner. Excellent beer selection on tap. Don't miss the philly cheese-steak egg rolls!

The VLT is a fine addition to the Valley Lodge family of restaurants. I am a regular at the one in Glenview, and to see the personality, energy, character, and integrity transfer from the Glenview location into Wilmette is great. When I go to family gatherings down the street now I know there is a trusted option, whether it is for a beer, some appetizers and a few drinks, or for a large group. Another great bonus is that is open later than any other restaurants in the area, which makes for a more solid social scene later in the evening. Add to that a solid beer lineup (how many North Shore restaurants have Revolution Brewing - Fistmas on tap? Seriously?) and it beats some of the other North Shore dive bars that might have been your choice previously for a late-night pop. Inside the bar area is great, there is a separate dining room, and even a semi-private event space so there are almost three different dynamics within the same restaurant. Wilmette residents are lucky to have an established restaurant with history, legacy and reputation take over that corner location because there have been a lot of things in that space over the last 10 years, and if the Glenview location is any indication, the VLT crew intends to stay for a long, long time. I will just note for a moment that I disagree with some of the other posters, including Sheila E. [which is actually written from a man's perspective, which is kind of weird that he didn't sign up himself if he felt so passionately about the VLT] as in the dozens of times I have eaten at the VL and VLT I have never once been served (1) raw meat or (2) gotten sick. A medium burger sometimes is med-rare, and sometimes med-to-med-well, but even then it is juicy.Too bad for them that they had this experience as it is truly a family-oriented restaurant where you can get better than average food and have a good time while in the company of your children.

Very attentive service with very generous meal portions. Food was tasty, I had the Italian beef each of my visits there. Good strong cocktails too. Keep this charmer in wilmette, it's a great addition.

Service was decent. Somewhat kid friendly. I would stay away from the burgers though, I had a turkey burger and my husband had a cheeseburger. For some reason I thought they'd be handmade burgers so the pre-made burger patties were an unfortunate disappointment.

What didn't go wrong... First sign of trouble was when the waiter did not know who ordered what. Burger raw, like mooing, even though ordered medium rare. It's replacement was a cheeseburger. We don't mix dairy and meat. Back a third time. My wife's steak, also raw. Sent back. Kids chopped steak sent kid to the toilets. Other kid ended up waiting extra time for buffalo wings, extra hot sauce to compensate for the delay. Don't go! I'd give less than one star but that's not an option.

Wow. This new restaurant is REALLY popular on Saturday for dinner. Every seat in the large dining room was taken; TVs were playing everywhere; and people were enjoying themselves like never before in stodgy Wilmette. Ordered a large carry out quantity of dinner items. Food wasn't ready when I arrived for pickup, and my order was complete (see below) about ten minutes later. This is okay during such a REALLY busy dinner situation, except they got the order wrong (see below). Food was good, especially the special fish dishes and the amazing sweet potato fries, plus the yummy soups. Everyone in my group said this is the best place in all of downtown Wilmette, and it's at the top of our list for future dining and ordering. We got charged for two items that we didn't order. I called the manager and he promised to credit me for them. I will verify this happened. Aside from that honest mistake on a REALLY jumpin' night, we have only praise for VLT. Update: just checked credit card statement. Will call manager today for that credit that has not yet been posted (Wednesday) from last Saturday. Update 2: just spoke with different manage, who promises to credit me today. Stay tuned. Update 3: two days later, credit is posted in my online account statement.

Perhaps it's unfair to compare the tavern with its predecessor (BlackDog) but ... I shall anyway ... better food, better service, better bar, better layout. I brought the family last night -- the Mrs had an appetite and the kids were eager to try new things so long as they were chicken and fries. I fancied something homely and substantial. All of us were impressed with good portions and good tastes. The kids really shook up their gastro adventurism with salmon and toasted cheese and emptied their plates. The Mrs has Salmon with an awesome crust. I had an enormous ribs stack. Was bloody good. The downside? Well, the tables were positioned extremely closely // obviously they're a business and wish to max their occupancy stats but pleasantly plump folks might find a challenge getting to their booths? ;-) whilst sliding sideways between distracted customers and jogging elbows? The place was LOUD but ... Heck ... that's a good sign. No? All in all -- I'll be back to find a Norm-seat at the bar ... as I'd love to be a frequent at this tavern.

We've loved having occasional dinner at Valley Lodge in Glenview. So we were really excited to hear that an outpost of Valley Lodge was opening in the briefly occupied Big Black Dog space in (much closer) Wilmette. The menu is very much the same as in Glenview: classic, traditional American fare--a nicer Supper Club kind of feel. Not quite as northwoodsy as L. Woods, but similar. We split pork chops (yum!), bbq ribs (tasty, midwest oven style) and a reuben. Portions are huge (think about splitting meals). The food was honest goodness. Great beer list with a bunch of regional craft (Greenbush IPA!) and stalwart nationally distributed stuff like Stone. Solid, reasonably priced wine list, too. How they reconfigured the space works. What once was a pretty awkward room, now has better flow. My only gripe is it is really, really loud. Like, can't have a conversation with people at your table loud. Seriously. Awesome addition to the burgeoning dining scene in downtown Wilmette. We'll be back.

I wanted this to be a positive review and I am not a dinner complainer - believe me, when I don't have to cook & clean up - its always a happy day. Sadly, this place will not be one I will return to. We met as a family for dinner here @ 6 on a Wednesday. They had 7 dinner they could've impressed us with and struck out on 5. We ordered: Nachos Supreme* (sans most of the "goodies" for the 10 year old), Grilled Cheese sandwiches for Grandma & Grandpa, Cedar Plank Salmon (for hubby & I), Sloppy Joe sandwich* (6 yr old) & Full Rack of ribs (for 6 yr old & for table to sample) Positives: Very generous portions Clean atmosphere Friendly staff Varied menu selection Negatives: Food was bland - no excitement Grilled Cheese: TONS of puffy bread, and little cheese Ribs: No flavor if it wasn't for the sugary BBQ sauce that may or may not have been from the Kraft bottle Cedar Plank Salmon: Just tasteless - and more of the crummy BBQ sauce - For the Love of Pete - get new BBQ sauce Service was poor, nonexistent until we would flag them down Acoustics were just LOUD

My previous two times at this restaurant were okay, but I'm sorry to say this time I got sick from my meal. I had a late lunch so only ate 4 ribs with barbecue sauce, a broccoli spear and water for dinner. Felt sick at bedtime and by 130am I was pathetically ill - the whole nine yards. I thought it could be the flu, but no aches and no fever. I still feel bad today. Had to miss work. When we first sat down, I was given a glass with lipstick and smudge marks. When I asked for another glass, the same one was brought back but instead to my son. I did not want the soup, but was given it wrapped up well before my meal began. (Egg lemon) The ribs were dry and tasted a little old. I feel the sanitary conditions need to seriously be looked at. Hand washing, all of it.

This is a pleasant enough restaurant but they are behind the times in terms of food and drink. Last night I ordered a blackened grouper sandwich with aioli sauce for $18.99. What I got was a slightly blackened piece of small fish with a piece of iceberg lettuce on a white bread bun. There was very little sauce on it and I had to ask for a side. My husband's ribs were so so as well. We ordered broccoli and asparagus as our sides but received a mix of squash. (That was fine and actually I preferred). The service was fine as is the atmosphere of the restaurant. If you are into craft beer this is not the place. Blue Moon and Miller Lite are on tap but they did have two decent options which we got. Stone IPA and Revolution. All in all, it was fine but we don't need to go back.

Just fine except I couldn't hear what my wife was saying across the table. Just too loud. Really enjoyed the chopped salad and a hefty martini. Great vibes all around except the room volume was surprisingly loud. I did notice some acoustic insulation tiles hanging from the ceiling but more might help. I'll stick to the Valley Lodge on Waukegan Avenue with the fireplace a cozy quiet dining area.

Overall, a shiny, glitzy, slightly above Bennigan's food quality experience neither to be sought out nor avoided. Like a Division/Rush Street Chicago bar that inexplicably popped up in Wilmette. Did the job, especially with alcohol involved, though === Guinness poured and served way too fast. Eating environment: very pleasant, if a bit overly loud and shrill on a crowded Friday, 19:00. Sound dampening ceiling panels ought be considered. Food: slightly above average Greek-owned American restaurant fare (saganaki, etc.). Nothing pronouncedly special. We sent back a bowl of fishy, slightly off, lobster tomato bisque; French onion replacement was bland and inoffensive and so, an improvement. Wedge salad lettuce was dried out, wilted, tasted of refrigerator in a very large portion that our waitress kindly, thoughtfully split to two plates prior to delivery. The chicken kabob was done well, a very large double portion of huge, tender, tasty chicken chunks on a veritable mountain of flavourful white rice. Patty melt was okay, dripping grease. Ordered medium rare (pink) it was served medium/medium well (thoroughly brown); house made chips excellent. Broccoli side initially was forgotten and when delivered was gray-green, over-steamed. Waitress: smilingly pleasant and friendly, attentive, knowledgeable, professional. Nearby Nick's remains a better, more polished and sophisticated choice. (Based on one visit 11.21.2014 Friday. Updates to follow if warranted.)

I will never return. The waiter takes my drink order drinks come great. I order calamari it comes tarter sauce frozen. I order dinner wife orders both meals come with soup or salad never asked if we want them I had to reguest them ( really ) how cheap. Dinner comes halfway threw apt really bad timing or your being rushed to fill tables fast not cool. My wifes chicken comes its burnt went back try again raw in the middle not safe! My cajun noodles no flavor, andouille sausage must of ran out italian sausage was in its place. So over a total waist of money. To all the good reviews REALLY!

Valley Lodge called our non-profit recently and let us know they were going to donate 10% of their proceeds to our services without us soliciting them! What wonderful support a local restaurant offered to us! So, of course, I went with my family to eat there on the day they were supporting us! Having eaten at the previous restaurant to take up this corner spot, I was so pleasantly surprised to see the way VLT redid the space. They did a lovely job, and being a Wilmette resident, I'm so happy to have an attractive restaurant on a main intersection. Our server did a fantastic job in handling our large group, in the semi-private space we were given. I only saved one star because I do not eat meat and I wish there were a few more veggie-friendly options. But, LOVE that they have Goose Island Green Line on tap. Yum. Thanks again, Valley Lodge!

We had a follow-up visit to VLT in November. No outside seating for us this time on a chilly Sunday. We were first seated at a window booth. We agreed the seating was a bit tight so we moved to a table and were much more comfortable -- although I still felt a bit of chill from the nearby window. We were all pleased with our meals: Two had the special of beef tenderloin sliders and two of us had the chicken kabob on rice. The kabob was large and tasty and the portion of rice was huge. The meals all came with soup. The chicken and rice soup was probably the better choice, even though it could have been creamier. The French onion soup had thumbs down from DH and DS.Our wine and beer options were fine. The four of us shared an apple crisp which was served with an excellent vanilla ice cream. While advertised as a "crisp," it was more of a cobbler as the topping was made from a batter not the traditional brown sugar "crumble." Great way to end an enjoyable lunch.

HUGE improvement over previous restaurant at this location. Good environment and food! Probably the best restaurant that has opened in this area in the past couple of years. Had the chicken Caesar wrap...was delicious...perfectly grilled chicken and great Caesar dressing. Dined in main dining area with husband and daughter...very kid friendly (they even stored our stroller in back). I plan to return to hang in the bar area and try a few drinks as the drink menu looks great.

Great new spot in Wilmette's blossoming downtown restaurant scene! Have been to the Lodge twice since opening and both experiences were phenomenal. I have had the VL Tavern Burger and the Cajun Shrimp Wrap. The burger was great and the Wrap was one of the best I've ever had. They have an assortment of aioli sauces you can order on the side and the siracha aioli goes great with the burger and fries. The Lodge will be one of my regular dining destinations moving forward.

On the plus side, good calamari and homemade chips, but the prices are high. My husband had the grouper sandwich and he said the the one at Stormy's in nearby Northfield was better in addition to being $6 less. The service was fine, BUT it is so loud in there! You can;t hear what people at your table saying to you. There are lots of places where you can similar food for less and without the excessive noise.

Staff was attentive.. food was good tho my order was not correct. . Not much as far as desserts and a little pricier than glenview location.. but the plus is no stairs.. a good addition to downtown wilmette. ..look forward to trying it again. .

Place was ok, probably a toss up between here and Nick's but i think I prefer Nicks a little better. Pros of this place, more space, bigger menu. Cons was just that i didnt think the burger i got here was anything special at all. Wouldnt say I won't be back, but definitely in no rush. Depot nuevo still best place in town.

Great use of the space - huge improvement , nice addition to downtown but PLEASE fix the sound issues. Food and drinks were right up to snuff of the beloved Glenview location. Will go again. Looking forward to outdoor seating too.

Ambiance was cute... upscale gastropub with lots of booth, table and bar seating. Very family friendly, which was great for us with a 4 year old. Got a gin cocktail (gin, basil, simple syrup) for $10 which was all right... nothing spectacular at all. Hubby got a Guinness which he enjoyed (unbelievably some places can actually mess this up.) Their salad was just ok (poppyseed salad)... disappointing for $10. Hubby's tavern burger was pretty good ($12?). My little guy enjoyed his chicken strips and the house-made chips that came with it. Overall it was a good time out with the family but the food won't bring me back. BTW... we went on a Sunday night and just beat the dinner crowd (it gets busy!) by coming in at about 5pm.

really loud; I couldn't hear my wife talk which is not a bad thing but still really loud. the ribs were so-so and kind of sauce heavy. I'll try again on a weekend for lunch. Needs some sound proofing.

I am so incredibly happy to live just over a mile from the new Valley Lodge Tavern. Growing up in Glenview, I never tried the original Valley Lodge Restaurant but I sure do love the ambiance, the decor, layout, menu, and the staff at VLT. Just to name a few of my favorite dishes that I have tried-the ribs are fall-off-the-bone delicious with a tangy bbq sauce and a side of homemade chips (my go-to comfort meal). I also really enjoyed the grilled cheese with bacon, their fresh salads, the sloppy joe, and the pretzel cheese dip app. The restaurant has been crowded each time I visited (now 4 times in 2.5 weeks) and the bartenders are knowledgeable and friendly. We did have a bit of a wait even with a reservation but the owner and manager were more than accommodating in comping our drinks while we waited. Overall, I will be a frequent visitor to the restaurant...hoping for some outdoor seating too!

Food and service acceptable. But to say the restaurant is conversation-challenged is an understatement. Painfully loud.

The French onion soup was a disappointment-- hardly any broth/soup with a giant piece of bread smothered with cheese. This could be improved. The chopped salad half portion was still very generous and the lunch special BLAST sandwich was tasty- BLT with avocado and shrimp. Service was very good but the food was average. The pretzel bites sounded good but we didn't order them, maybe next time.

Very disappointing experience - I will presume our experience was an anomaly but we waited an hour after ordering before walking out - their explanation was "a run on the kitchen".

Very nice sitting outside for an excellent hamburger. Quick service. Tea refilled quickly .. And enjoyable addition to downtown wilmette

Good tavern. Food is good and there is a variety for everyone. Reasonably priced. Service was a bit slow. Nice music and not to loud. All enjoyed their meal

Been going to the original one for decades. I like this one nicely updated great service.

(4)Bradley C.
Very attentive service with very generous meal portions. Food was tasty, I had the Italian beef each of my visits there. Good strong cocktails too. Keep this charmer in wilmette, it's a great addition.
(5)Anne H.
Service was decent. Somewhat kid friendly. I would stay away from the burgers though, I had a turkey burger and my husband had a cheeseburger. For some reason I thought they'd be handmade burgers so the pre-made burger patties were an unfortunate disappointment.
(3)Sheila E.

Mediocre food, nice beer selection and good atmosphere

Casual, good food, great atmosphere, owners are all over making sure this is a success
(5)Chip C.

(5)Michael B.
(5)S. C. C.
(2)Andrew L.
Good food, also service is friendly and timely. It's a sports bar atmosphere, so it's loud. Worth a weekend visit when a good game is on.
(4)Dena C.
Staff was attentive.. food was good tho my order was not correct. . Not much as far as desserts and a little pricier than glenview location.. but the plus is no stairs.. a good addition to downtown wilmette. ..look forward to trying it again. .
(3)Reeder J.
(3)Elisabeth L.
Great use of the space - huge improvement , nice addition to downtown but PLEASE fix the sound issues. Food and drinks were right up to snuff of the beloved Glenview location. Will go again. Looking forward to outdoor seating too.
(4)Pearl T.
(3)J K.
really loud; I couldn't hear my wife talk which is not a bad thing but still really loud. the ribs were so-so and kind of sauce heavy. I'll try again on a weekend for lunch. Needs some sound proofing.
(2)T H.
My wife and I recently went here for a wild night on the town. With four kids, it doesn't take much. We were both impressed with Valley Lodge. Good food, fair prices, great fun atmosphere and a really great bar. A great and welcome addition to the hood.
(4)Oh K.
Just plain love it. Everything. Food yum. Selections great. Bar cozy. Service friendly. Ambience perfect. Like Glenview. Love Wilmette.
(5)Natalie L.
(4)Darlene K.
Go here for great atmosphere and great grouper sandwiches!
(4)Judy H.
Food and service acceptable. But to say the restaurant is conversation-challenged is an understatement. Painfully loud.
(3)Jamie B.
(3)Bruce G.
Very disappointing experience - I will presume our experience was an anomaly but we waited an hour after ordering before walking out - their explanation was "a run on the kitchen".
