Fantastic food and beer list. Ceviche, mussels with chorizo and shrimp tacos. Yum. Very nice service too.

Good Service, even better food- Other than the price, the food is worth it,no doubt about it. The Shrimp tacos are definitely great. And the green salsa-WOW. Talk about addictive!!

Always sit at the bar. The Queso Fondito is AMAZING. Ask for it with flour tortillas and their house chips.

This place is one of my favorites! I probably eat here at least once a week, if not more. My kids love it too. It's casual and comfortable, and very laid back. The staff is attentive and responsive, and they don't mind it when we bring the kids (some restaurants are negative and rude when you bring your kids). My husband and I also have dinner and drinks here without the kids, and we often sit at the bar. We love the pomegranate margaritas, the queso fondito, the tilapia salad, spinach and shrimp quesadillas, the enchiladas, and their new line of tacos (one actually has pulled pork, avocado and bacon)! Our kids like the normal tacos, so you can get those too. I don't understand the complaints about the chips being greasy. I'm a freak about greasy food, and I've never noticed anything wrong with the chips. I can be a tough critic, but I've never had a problem. I'd suggest asking for new ones next time, because that is not the norm (from what I've seen). I've met the owners, Rob and Ann, who are always friendly and helpful. A few weeks ago, my husband decided he should throw a last minute holiday party for all of his managers, and suggested we host the party at our home. I didn't want all the stress of guests at the house, so I called the Depot and asked them if we could have it there. One of the owners returned my call, and helped me pick my favorite menu items for the party. They even offered to create a party area with cocktail tables that the owner had at another location (now that's service)! The staff was awesome and kept the guests happy; and when my guests are happy, I'm happy. Well done Depot Neuvo!

I want to write this review and give 5 stars, but it only gets 3. Its fantastic for margaritas, chips and guac. The kids menu could use help and the food itself on the menu is just ok. But if I want mex I usually do not go here.

Amazing location in an old train depot! Great interior decor and a fun vibe. Hair raising, spine tinglingly-strong Margaritas. Incredible chips and fabulous salsas, oh my! ...and then the entrees came and it was like somebody let all the air out of the tires. I am to this day perplexed as to how they could hit a home run on chips, salsas and drinks but somehow lose the recipes for delicious entrees. Nothing that anyone at our table ordered was particularly delicious enough to finish. My son wouldn't even eat his chicken/cheese quesadillas (which he normally loves) and I wasn't sure why until I tried it. It had absolutely no flavor and was as bland as sawdust. If these guys could figure out a way to re-engineer their entree recipes, I'd definitely come back again. Otherwise, it's just going to be a margarita and chips/salsa place for us.

We've carried out appetizers on a couple of occasions. The Cerviche was tasty each time. My wife thought the chicken sops and spinach/shrimp quesadillas were not as good the second time as the first. We will be back, though.

Good drinks and chips and salsa. I love that style food too. The food was super greasy and the service was not very good. I would go again for drinks and chips, but pass on dinner unless I had a hang over.

Let start off with one word, MARGARITAS. Out of this world. Maybe I should have said, lets start off with 3 words margaritas margaritas margaritas. Any more than that, you're in trouble. However, it shouldn't end there. Depot Nuevo's chips and salsa, lights out. Well done on serving the chips warm. Follow that with the steak. And, if I forgot to mention, get a margarita. I wish more restaurants on the North Shore would follow their lead and step up their game. Depot Nuevo is in high rotation for Friday night date night with my wife, only problem is the margaritas make Saturday morning a bit tough sometimes.

I went here with 3 co-workers in March '09 and I tell you, we had a great time here. The place is small, quaint and cozy. I wouldn't call the cuisine Mexican, because it isn't. I would call it a Latin Fusion instead. I was looking forward to ordering their flank steak, but our server's recommendations were the braised duck and halibut specials that week. Most of the time, I order the specials because they show me more about the Chef's creativity and emotions for that week. So I ordered the duck and another from our party ordered the Halibut. The duck was a hit! I ended up sharing the dish with my friends simply because they couldn't get enough of it. The duck had a perfect sear and was presented in the wine sauce that was rich, but not too rich... I'm salivating as I write this.....and it's been at least 6 weeks since I had it. Depot Nuevo is a great place. The service was good and the prices were pretty reasonable.

Went with my wife and her sister and mom on a Saturday night and we all really enjoyed our meals and experience. The service was solid and we sat right down even though they don't offer reservations. The shrimp and steak tacos were terrific and their margaritas were spot on. My wife and I will be back.

Depot Nuevo: great drinks for a suburban restaurant with a central location in downtown Wilmette. Close to the metra and has quick carryout service, as I've taken out from here as well as dined in. The guacamole is fresh as are the homemade chips; but it's a pretty americanized version of latin cuisine. I guess my expectation was a little high as it does mention latin fusion, but the simplest ingredients in latin food; cilantro and lime are sometimes lacking in their main entrees. Those two contrasts in flavors can really make or break the final taste of a good taco or fajita. But, the flavors just don't really stand out. As a local, this is a quick option other than the basics of Chinese and sushi in the area. I've had all their varieties of tacos, shrimp fajitas, and order the chips and guac, but the portions are "minimal." I'd like to expect for the prices I pay I'd be able to have share-able portions, but entrees the size of tapas plates? Beware as well, while the chips are light and crispy, they are very greasy. The staff is always attentive and friendly, but other options in Evanston or even the Lalo's chain can provide a little bit more punch in your meal with a little less punch in the wallet. It's family friendly; so if you have a grandmother you'd like to take out to dinner or a child you'd like to treat while enjoying yourself an adult beverage, salud.

Today, I tried Depot Nuevo for the first time and I thought it was pretty good. To start off we had the ceviche which was nice but I have had much better ceviche's. The fish was nice and fresh but I have to think there are a few other app's that I would enjoy more. My dad and I both had the New York strip steak which had a lot of flavor and is the reason why I gave Depot Nuevo 4 stars. When I go back I am going to sit outside on the patio and get wasted. They have an amazing tequila selection but I had work the next day so I just had a beer. The service was very attentive and friendly. I look forward to coming back!

We've been to this Restaurant 4 times in the Past!! Never had a bad experience their before I came theire with my family tonight. We ordered are Guacamole Appetizer and it took 20 minutes to be brought to us!! Then my sister that is pregnant ordered a Chipotle Chicken and we specifically said no spices and they brought it to her extra spicey!! Charlie the so called manager was very unprofessional and said to my sister what would you like me to do take it off or bring her a new one. He was very mean and did not apologize!! Also the shrimp tasted spoiled and when we were about to leave the waitress through the check at her with a mean face. Worst restaurant experience ever for my family I will never step foot in their again!!!!

My wife and I absolutely love Mexican food, and we are always on the hunt for a new place to try. This local restaurant in Wilmette is a hidden gem. The first time we came with a group of 10 people and enjoyed the fabulous outdoor dining experience on their huge wrap-around porch. Not everyone can handle a big group, but this place was equipped. We all enjoyed the food, the service was friendly, and we have since gone back. Our bar bill was a bit excessive, probably because we were drinking top-shelf margaritas. But the food itself was very reasonably priced. Good sized portions and fresh ingredients. The Tres Leches Cake is unbelievable ! An absolute must. Although I prefer eating outside, the interior was very comfortable. Its like a house that was converted into a restaurant with a huge bar. We will certainly be going back for more.

I visited for a new event called "Taste and Tweet"! We got a sampling of the menu, along with three very delicious margaritas and tweeted about what we thought. The chef is Mexican, but French trained so the has some unique influences. The food was fresh and not heavy like some Mexican-Latin food can be. This is what we had: Starters: Gucamole and homemade chips Grilled Shrimp and spinach quesadillas Raosted Corn Bisque (sooo good, and I learned, is not chicken-stock based so all vegetarian!) Entrees: Argentinian-style flank steak with chimichurri sauces, jalapeno sour cream mashed potatoes and green beans (seasoned well and very good) Chipotle Rubbed Trouth with bacon cabbage confit, jalapeno sour cream mashed potatoes and green beans (I don't even like fish, but this was light, flaky and tasted so good Chorizo tacos with green rice (yummy, good cilantro flavor) Desert: Pastel de Tres Leches (great cake that is not heavy and very fresh) The owner, beverage guy (sorry that's really not his title), and Chef Alvaro were so gracious and gave us great explanations about the food and drinks. They even have listerine inthe bathrooms so you can keep your breathe nice and fresh after all of the delicious flavors! OHHH also, for all you city folk, you can can take the Union Pacific North line Metra (the one that goes all the way to Waukegan, from Ogilvie, and just walk about three blocks and you're there! I can't wait to go back!

I really enjoyed Depot Nuevo. I had the tilapia salad which was fresh and very yummy. I love the homemade tortilla chips as well. My parents and I like going there when we can, but it can get pricey so we don't go very often.

Great atmosphere. Good drinks. Food...ok. Had the chimichurri (sp?) steak and it was not like the argentinean variety that is a delicious blend of olive oil, garlic, and parsley. It was weird like it had mayo in it or they tried to Americanize it. Previously tried the chorizo stuffed chicken. It was bland and boring. Tried their chicken and lime tortilla soup...bland. This place lacks flavor. Service was friendly and attentive. Go there for drinks, eat elsewhere.

The best part about our dining experience was the chips and salsa, which are TO DIE FOR, in my opinion. We ordered a couple of appetizers - ceviche and quesadilla. The plating was pretty. I am not a huge fan of ceviche in general -- I thought the quesadilla was interesting. Everyone in my party ordered from the tortilla portion of the menu, so I can't speak for the rest of the menu which sounded delish. I ordered the tacos with tilapia and flank steak. I ate only the tilapia tacos which were delicious. I would say this place is a good choice if you find yourself in the Wilmette area. I would return in the summer to sit outside after browsing the shops in Wilmette and I would try something different on the menu, as well as a marg.

Here's the low-down quick and easy. This place has amazing margaritas, seriously. Buy one, buy two, buy three (and have someone carry you home). Delicious. I appreciate their margarita. It's not in a huge glass, filled with six cups of sweet juice and one shot of crappy tequila. It's one regular sized margarita, that tastes great, and will knock you on your ass. :) The chips and salsa are deliciious. The chips are warm, and there are two different types of salsa, both unique and distinct. That is where our love affair ended. I ordered the tacos, which were fine. The steak was definitely my least favorite, dry and chewy. The fish and short ribs were quite good... They just seemed like a lot of tortilla ratio compared to the filling ratio. The service was great, and I'll be back to try other menu items.

The patio is a great place to grab a margarita on a hot summer day, but I found the dishes to be a bit overpriced and not special enough for a repeat visit.

This restaurant is housed in the old Train Depot which was moved to its current location a number of years ago. Very neat inside, very colorful, nice staff. We had a group of 8 and had a reservation and dropped right in on a Saturday night. Most of the group had tacos of different varieties and didn't see anyone with anything left on the plates. My fiance had enchiladas and I had a daily special which I wasn't overwhelmed by, but I really want to get back and try more menu items. It is as stated in other revues a small venue, so big groups beware.

After a long day of work and kids activities we were looking for something delicious and we found it. We did take out. When I got there the place was packed. The food was delivered at the time they told me to arrive. When I got home, my tacos (the fish tacos) were excellent. My wife really enjoyed the scallops. I look forward to eating there again.

Love this place! The wife and I went up to Wilmette to pick up a Craigslist find, and the seller recommended that we check this place out. Very cool space, especially the outside deck. I would venture to say that 2/3 of the seating capacity is outside, so winter will probably be quite full inside. Beautiful space, and the food was very tasty. I tried a spinach salad with bell peppers, toasted tortilla strips, and chipotle grilled scallops. Mmmmm...great balance of fresh ingredients, and probably some of the best scallops I've ever had. Apparently they do curb service carry-out, and I heard the owner talking about a new online ordering option that would be live sometime this fall. Service was friendly and solid. Seemed like a kid friendly space (at least on the deck). I'll definitely go back, and recommend this spot to friends.

Disappointing. This is a charming place from an ambiance and decor perspective. This was our second time there and I'm sorry to say that both times the food was very bland. The "chips" were more the consistency of old fashioned potato chips than tortilla chips. This time we had the tacos, enchiladas and fajitas. Do not expect to see a sizzling platter. More like reheated chicken chunks. There was nothing approaching either good authentic fare or imaginative cooking. The service was poor. We sat a few feet from the bar with the manager nearby and a wait person only showed up when I got up to get someone. There were no apologies and no attempt to expedite our meal. Even up here in the burbs, one can do a lot better.

Brand new restaurant on the North Shore, and my guess is that it will be THE new place up here for at least the next six months, if not more. It's located in the the historic Wilmette train depot which was built in the 1870s and was moved to this location many years ago. It's walking distance from the current Metra train station. Big, wraparound covered porch outside with a fair amount of seating. Walk inside, and you immediately find high ceilings and a welcoming bar. They have successfully redecorated the old place to give it a fairly authentic Latin vibe. You're also greeted with a nice mix of artwork, historic photographs and the sounds of salsa music audible in the background - but not overwhelming loud. Easy to listen to the music AND talk - nice touch. Now, this is not ,and probably never will be, a place for frat boys or 20 somethings to go out on the town - it's still in the 'burbs; yet it is a great choice to take a date or have a drink followed up with some dinner. Great selection of high end, quality tequilas and specialty margaritas. Mixture of Central and South American flavors and mixed in with funky versions of some Mexican dishes. I skipped dessert ,but they were loving the Tres Leches cake with strawberries at the table next to mine. Worth a stop on the way up to Ravinia this summer.

**If I could I would give this 3.5 stars, but I'll round up** It's time the North Shore got a Mexican restaurant!! The owner of The Noodle (also in downtown Wilmette) just recently opened up this new, hot spot. The inside is VERY BRIGHT. The Fiesta dishware looked eerily similar to mine- I think I have the same colors. There are not many tables inside so I'm sure the wait can get long. They do have a large outside porch with lots of seating- perfect for the summer time. What's better than sitting outside with a margarita and chips & salsa? I had the chorizo encrusted tilapia- it was really, really good. My brother and sister had skirt steak/flank steak which was very tasty as well. If you're in the area and in the mood for mexican-check this place out. Don't come from the city to go here- there are better and more reasonable Mexican restaurants in the city. I'm happy for Wilmette.

My feelings align with many of the 2-3 star reviews in that the food overall lacked the "bite" I've come to expect in latin dishes. I can't help but compare it to so many fantastic places in Chicago - I expected more for the price. My chimichurri sauce was unexpectedly watery and couldn't even taste it on the steak. The meat itself was cooked as requested but a bit chewy for my tastes. My wife's flank steak burrito was very average. To be fair, the chips were authentic and salsas tasted homemade. Service was great (would give it 4 stars) and the place was packed. I walked in with high expectations and I think I was expecting something more authentic - Depot Nuevo's website explicitly states the dishes are "Latin-inspired", not necessarily authentic.

My first 5 star review on Yelp. I love this place. We live in Highland Park, I think there are 10+ mexican restaurants within 2 miles of our house. Depot is worth the drive. It is HANDS DOWN the BEST MEXICAN RESTAURANT on the NORTH SHORE. The chips are mind blowing, I think I eat 3 bowls of chips before I even order, thats because Im getting WASTED on the Escalade Margaritas. We always come here with friends, and always have a great time. Margaritas, Chips, Margaritas, Fish Tacos, Margaritas - fresh and healthy tasting, not typical. Again, this is My first 5 star review on Yelp. This place is good.

Just visited for the first time and had a great experience. The food was fresh and innovative, service was good, and nice variety of drinks. (Especially loved the Sopa Maya. Must try!!) The atmosphere was festive without being too loud. The staff was also very accommodating of my food allergy. Overall, we had an excellent experience and look forward to visiting again soon.

I love Depot Nuevo. The restaurant is small and homey, although, recently by enclosing the front porch seasonally, the space has grown. The food is delicious beginning with complimentary warm chips and homemade salsa. One of my favorites is the salmon, but my daughter's is the fish tacos. I limit my margarita intake, but Depot Nuevo makes it difficult, because they too are delicious. For years I have dined at The Noodle in Wilmette, (their other restaurant)....mostly for lunch. I highly recommend either of their locations for high quality food without being fancy.

Great food! Mexican fusion. The chips - yum! Vibrant little indoor area. The porch is huge and comfy.

Cute decor, friendly staff, good drinks. Food is NOT GOOD! So boring for a Latino place. The no-reservations policy is really annoying. They wouldn't reserve us a table for our party of 10 (on a Tuesday!). It's a small place - not somewhere you can easily get a table for 10 by just showing up. We went elsewhere.

I LOVE their green enchiladas. Chips are so- so (sometimes a bit greasy ), service is good, and patio seating is SO appreciated.

Update: We went back to Depot Nuevo last Saturday night - remember, the food rocked and I said I would give it another shot. The wait for an outdoor table was still around 30 minutes, but the hostess kept us informed and happy. The service was terrific, with the exception of the 'backwaiter' who plopped our drinks on the table without asking whose was whose. Our waitress was friendly, attentive and knowledgeable. The food still rocked - we tried the BBQ glazed salmon and Trout this time and loved them as much as the Chorizo Crusted Tilapia. The spinach and nopales is a great side that I will order every time. Thanks for the improvements, Depot Nuevo - you just won us over as permanent customers.

This is a north shore version of Mexican...not very spicy, Americanized Mexican food and very over-priced. Theatmosphere is nice, and the outdoor balcony is pleasant, but if one is doing Mexican on the North shore, once can do better food-wise and price-wise going to Evanston's "That Little Mexican Cafe"...service at That Little Mexican Cafe is also friendlier...and less pretentious. We love Mexican food, but this is one place we will not be visiting again...alas.

More of a fan of this restaurant in the summer than winter, but the addition of the enclosure around the porch makes the experience much better for year round dining. The food is tasty and well presented. The service is attentive, but not annoying. The drink menu is a little heavy on tequila (not a fan myself) and would enjoy 1 or 2 more non-tequila "specialty drinks", but they do have a good wine menu - so I scrape by. I tend to be someone who will order a couple of apps instead of a main (I like to taste around) and this place is well suited. Parking can be a little tight, and reservations are a must in the summer or any weekend. Very, very nice local option.

I was excited about trying this place, checked out the menu beforehand and thought it was worth a shot. It was a perfect summer evening, so we opted to eat on the wraparound deck, which was really a great setting. Here's the scoop. The good: Love the outdoor porch, super friendly waitstaff who doesn't rush you, DELICIOUS margarita (very fresh with real lime juice), generous portions at decent prices, peaceful place to have good conversation with someone you like! :) The not-so-good: The food lacked soul, in spite of the menu's descriptions. It seemed very safe--not too spicy, not too 'out there'--just generic. The menu is not Mexican, not South American...just blandly Latin. We were too stuffed to eat dessert, so I can't review that part of the menu. Overall I was left with an impression of...meh. I don't know that I would go out of my way to burn a path back there to eat, but it was certainly a decent meal.

Wonderful family owned business. Service is friendly. It's kid friendly - and healthy ( grilled chicken , rice & grapes were clean plates w/ my crew of picky's) along with celery & carrot app's. I could LIVE on the warm tortilla chips they bring to the table ( we generally ask for seconds). Fish tacos are amazing - so good that I haven't tried anything else yet (6 timer). Margarita's are a must!!! Pomegranate is my fav. Give it a way thumbs up from our family!

  • Sara K.

This place is always packed, and it's not just because there's nowhere else good to eat in Wilmette. Come here for the porch and the margaritas. In the summer, they have Adirondack chairs in front of the restaurant where you can sit and drink on the lawn while waiting for a table. The margaritas are top notch. Some of the food is great, some of it is just decent. I've never had anything I really disliked, save the ceviche. Paella is quite good. Tacos are rather bland. Most of the portions are pretty big. The tres leches cake is a dessert favorite. They've hosted quite a few birthdays for my family over the years. I'm glad they're in the neighborhood.

We arrived at 6:30 p.m. on a Saturday (they don't take reservations on Friday or Saturday) and were pleasantly surprised to be immediately seated. The waitstaff was prompt and pleasant. Our complimentary chips and salsa arrived almost as we were sitting down. While both the green and red salsas were tasty, we both preferred the red (which is unusual; the green usually wins at other restaurants). The chips are well-fried and quite enjoyable even on their own. We were pleased to see that Empirical Brewery's Infinity IPA was on tap. Our favorite margarita was the Nuevo Margarita; we found the Presidente to be a bit too sweet. We ordered the cheese Enchiladas Rojas for our entree and were quite pleased with our choice. The cheese was substantial, but not overwhelming. The red sauce was a lovely counterpoint to the cheese. We ordered the Tres Leches Cake for dessert. It was fantastic! The strawberries were in peak condition and the cake was light and fluffy without the cloying sweetness that sometimes plagues the dish. We had a wonderful time and would heartily recommend a visit. We plan to stop by again soon!

We were a group of 6. Almost everyone ordered different variations of the tacos. The favorites were the shrimp and a special steak one with blue cheese. The ceviche was large to share. The guacamole was great. We ordered the queso without the meat and it was yummy. Cheese enchiladas with the verde sauce was also good. The margaritas had a good flavor but I don't think the first round was very strong because the 3 who ordered them also ended up ordering a supplemental shot to add. Of course, maybe we are just a wild crew when we get babysitters! Complementary chips and salsa were good as well. Fun all around!

An old train depot converted to a great restaurant with a modern take on Latin American fare. It's an awesome spot with wonderful outdoor seating (when weather permits), an excellent bar with an array of tequilas of your choosing, and super tasty margaritas and food. Their GM, Kyle is the best there is and the owners, staff, and cooks are as good as it gets. Don't miss out on the short rib tacos, plus they have great guacamole, chips and salsas, chipotle mashed potatoes, salmon with smokey bbq sauce, fried plantains, and...just order everything!

The outdoor sitting is what this place is all about. Great location and very nice atmosphere. The staff is very friendly. Drinks are good. They have a good selection of margaritas and some nice beers. Food was well presented but not that tasty. The best dish was the tacos. Had fish, which was just average, and the shrimp taco, which was good. Ceviche for appetizer lacked in flavor though the quantity was large.

So we arrived back home from dinner and my wife and I could not stop talking about how that was the BEST dining out Mexican/South American cuisine on the North Shore. We have been to a lot of the restaurants around this establishment and nothing has compared this place so far. Every weekend we would travel back to the city for our Saturday night meal and now we have a new favorite spot. The staff was great, very friendly and courteous. You get chips and two types of salsa at your table right when you sit down which is a nice perk. We also order the nacho's as an appetizer, which were great as well. I recommend using the green salsa with the nachos, goes really well together. My wife had a margarita which she thought was fabulous and I had a glass of pinot noir. They have a full bar if wine or margarita's are not your thing. The wine was perfect, bold and had a great flavor that went well with my Salmon dish entree. My wife ordered the chicken tacos and really loved them as well. They come with lots of extras. We also had our 15 month old daughter with us and the atmosphere is welcoming to children if you want to bring them with you for an night out. My daughter seemed to really enjoy having some of my salmon and broccoli. Overall, this place was great and I would recommend it to anyone that has not been to it yet. The prices are very good for the area which was a plus. Great place to bring out-of-towners and show them that North Shore food can match up against the city food of Chicago.

Been here a few times now and it hasn't disappointed yet. Great service, great decor and quality food at a reasonable price. This is just one place that has revitalized downtown wilmette for the neighborhood peeps and their family.

Great outdoor seating and a good margarita! The building itself is an old train station. I usually go in the summer so I can sit outside but the inside is nice as well. The food is good, a little pricey but not too bad.

It was hasty of me to give 3 stars before. I have been back many times since and haven't been disappointed. Service is always excellent and the food is great. The wine list is short but I've enjoyed everything I've had, and my companions tell me margaritas are wonderful. So now I see why it's always crowded...

Awesome place. Great food, great margaritas, friendly staff, outdoor porch area for the summer, and local ownership. There's not much more you can ask, especially if you don't fancy trekking into the city for dinner. Can easily accomodate all kinds of groups, from dates to family outings with kids.

I'm always a little conflicted about this place because the summer porch dining is so unique and fantastic, and simply so enjoyable that it almost makes up for the less than fantastic food. Every time we go there, we leave feeling happy, but we also leave wishing the food was better. It's not that the food is terrible, but compared to the plethora of Mexican options in Chicago, it's not the reason to go, especially for the price point. Nevertheless, the ambiance is very special, and that's the reason we keep returning.

I love this place. I work down the street, so my coworkers and I come here pretty often. The chips and salsa are amazing - I'd come here just for that. I'm addicted to the steak tacos, though, so I doubt I could ever come here without having them! The historical building is beautiful, and overall has a warm, friendly atmosphere. The service is always great. It's by far my favorite restaurant in downtown Wilmette!

Great place - especially in summer eating on the porch. Taken business associates there for social gathering - always a hit. Wife enjoys going there also. Food is very good - menu a bit limited. Service is excellent.

This place is great! Located in a converted old train station (hence the name 'depot'), and walking distance from the Metra station. They serve delicious Mexican and South American cuisine, all made fresh and from scratch every day. And the owners are wonderful, too they clearly take a lot of pride in their service and quality of food and drink. The guacamole is amazing, some of the best I've ever had, and the margaritas are fantastic. I had the guacamole and cucumber margarita. Definitely make this a regular stop!

Wow. What can I say? Can't go wrong with homemade chips and steak tacos. The service is wonderful and they make a mean margarita. If you're not a drinker, don't order it..... you won't be happy by the amount of tequila in it. YAHOOO!

Still loving it here. The pomegranate and elderflower margaritas are outstanding. Great for a girls night out, family, couple... really, anyone. Friendly, excellent service.

My sister is a connoisseur of Mexican cuisine, so I treated her to dinner here last time she was in town. We snagged a great table on the porch and ordered Margaritas. I didn't realize how strong they were until I wobbled a bit upon standing up. I'm not a drinker and only indulge my fondness for Margaritas twice a year on average, so always hope for a good one. These did not disappoint. We liked the chips with two types of salsa. Very light chips, not oily at all. Unfortunately, my sister found her fish tacos dry and uninspiring. I ordered the chicken enchilada and liked it. It was topped with a delicious, light cream. In general I find the food here light and not particularly traditional or imaginative, but it's pretty good and definitely fresh-tasting. Service is also good. Suggest you dine on the porch, if weather permits. Much nicer than eating inside which feels a bit cramped.

We went to the Depot on Saturday night. The wait wasn't too long, had a margarita at the bar. Too many kids screaming, I know families need a place to take the kids but really at least teach them to behave in a public setting. Started with chips and salsa. Greasy chips, and really just a green and red hot sauce. I like my salsa to be chunky and spicy, this was disappointing. We had an appetizer of queso fundido, a little too greasy. Nice flavor and plentiful but loaded with grease. I had the scallops, it came with rice and plantains. Rice was bland, plantains were ok, scallops were ok. A bit pricey at $22. My sister had the shrimp, she said it was good. Brother in-law had the flank steak, he loved it. My partner had a burrito, he said it was good. Margaritas were pricey at $8.75 each. We shared a tres leches, really the best part of the meal...excellent! I liked the ambiance, would probably go back again and go for the more traditional Mexican dishes...burritos, tacos, enchiladas. Would also go later, after the kids have been put to bed.

Being an architecture fan, I believe this is one of the most beautiful buildings in Wilmette and have always been a fan of taking such beautiful buildings and reusing them as either homes or restaurants versus tearing town for crappy condos built with 90% cinder block and no care or appreciation of aesthetics. Coming off my architectural high horse, the food here is mediocre and nothing of note to make me come back. However, I'm probably in the minority here because it's been around a long time and is always packed. Then again, it does have the best outdoor dining area in downtown Wilmette. It's not bad, but not great and the Chicagoland area just has too many other great Mexican restaurants where this place will likely only be relegated to me as a place to grab a drink and chips outside - before or after my meal somewhere else.

Great place for margaritas. The chips alone were worth the trip, but it was the tacos that were most impressive. I also recommend the guacamole, enchiladas, and whatever special they offer that day. The setting is beautiful - historical building on a quiet street with a partially covered patio. Perfect for a summer afternoon.

I must have hit a bad night. The chicken enchilada was made with mostly dark, overcooked meat - not tasty at all. Lots of families - which is fine. But why seat patrons without kids near tables with families in the first place? I guess we could have asked to be moved but it might have been awkward. The clincher: my dinner partner had a smitten of food left on her plate. I had more and requested my leftovers be boxed. Imagine my surprise the next day when I found her food and mine in the same box. I did not ask for both to be boxed together. She actually said she was finished and to take away the plate. I really want to give 2 stars but previous visits were better so I will go with my original assumption that I hit a bad evening.

Cute old train station with a really nice wrap around deck with many tables for outside seating. First the not so good - our table top was a little sticky and water service was a bit slow at first then they came often like a deluge! The chips were really light and crispy but way, way, way too greasy. Someone needs to tell them they need to turn up the heat on the oil. Have seen this complaint many times on Yelp and it appears they either don't read this or no one tells them or they are stubborn... The ceviche appetizer was a good portion with very fresh fish and seafood. Unfortunately it really had no flavor other than a bit of lime. Had to add the entire little bowl of red salsa to give it flavor. The sauteed green beans tasted like they were spoiled. Should have returned them but I wasn't in the mood to complain and ruin everyone else's evening. The Good - the service was very good - attentive yet not overbearing. The chicken fajitas were very flavorful. The blackened chicken salad had well seasoned chicken that was also moist. Not sure I will return as there are many other restaurants nearby we have never tried.

In short: Food: good to very good. Service: very good Wait time for food: long Pricing: fair We were greeted warmly: always a good way to start! The restaurant and staff were very accommodating, which we appreciated, and as noted by many others, they are family friendly. I do think that they tried to accommodate too many people, however. Although staff came by and refilled our water and soda, we rarely saw our server because she was so busy running among all her tables, and we waited a long time for our food. The food itself was fine--good but not a centerpiece of conversation. This was a fun and pleasant experience, and we'll return.

Family friendly atmosphere and friendly service. I normally love Latin fusion, but I didn't love it here. Didn't hate it here, either mind you! Perhaps I just expected a different kind of Latin flavor here. I'm familiar with Mexican (Southern California style) Cuban and Spanish. The fried chips they bought out were hot, but too greasy for me. I didn't turn them down when they brought more, but I thought they were oily. The kids meal Chicken Quesadilla was very good. The 3 taco plate I ordered had a couple highlights: I highly recommend the Barbecue Short Rib Taco (w/ pineapple, cilantro, chihuahua cheese) - this was the BEST. The Fish taco was very healthy (tilapia was soft and fresh) The Carnitas were a little salty for me, so I wouldn't recommend it, though the flavour was good. Unfortunately, I wasn't a fan of the rice - it was too hard (I suspect it wasn't cooked enough) and I was a little annoyed that they charged extra for beans (which is a usually an included item in a Mexican dish... I know, I know, this place is LATIN, not mexican, but with an menu item called a 3 taco plate? ... come on.) Hubby ordered the Enchiladas (three enchiladas; he did two chicken, one cheese) and this was EXCELLENT - the green sauce was particularly good. I'd definitely recommend this! And it was a large portion. All in all, good food & solid service. Great for kids. There is also a bar (hubby ordered a delicious Coconut Mojito and Margarita) so that's also a plus. I'd come again, and hopefully next time, I'll be wowed.

Love Depot Nuevo! Love their porch, the cucumber avocado margarita is amazing, and the shrimp tacos make my mouth water! Such friendly staff, even when you're with a big group of ladies who has probably outstayed their welcome! My only suggestion is to consider being open during the day over the weekends. We walked into town yesterday hoping to be able to have lunch, and were disappointed to see it closed.

Great food and atmosphere in the summer - a wonderful porch, margaritas, service, etc. I like going there even more in the winter when the porch is enclosed and cozy and there aren't as many people there. Any time of year, the food is fabulous. My favorite is the tacos - simple, but they use good, fresh ingredients. Also the specials are always excellent, creative, and fresh.

Depot Nuevo doesn't really ever need to do much to suck me in. If I happen to be even remotely in the neighborhood, I'll find some excuse to stop by for a drink. The margaritas are killer. Still the best I've had, anywhere, to date. The menu is solid, and the complimentary (homemade!) chips and salsa at the beginning of the meal are a major bonus. The waitstaff is always super friendly and attentive, and you really can't beat the outdoor seating when the weather permits. Plus, it's still Wilmette, so parking will rarely kick your ass.

Everything here is fantastic. Our server, Brian, was friendly, informative, and professional. The Bartender, Jack, is fluent in tequila and made the best Margarita I've ever hard.

Normally I want to go UP a review, this time I wish there was a way to go down a half a review. Why? The Food. 5 stars. The service. 1 star. So I was meeting some friends and I was early, so I decided to sit at the bar and order a drink. Bartender.....dull, no conversation. Tried to ask him what beer I should try and he recommended some cheap..run of the mill "Mexican" beers. I ordered some beer on my own and i asked what margarita he recommended and he TOTALLY ignored me. Pretended I wasn't there. As a former bartender with 10+ years in the biz, I would see a solo, female, drinking customer as $$$$$. This dude totally ignored me. When I finally caught his attention he recommended the least expensive drink on the menu and when I asked about the most interesting thing on the menu he described it as "a salad in a glass" and while I appreciated his honesty, shouldn't you have SOME pride in the drink menu being the bartender. While siting there several other customers commented on how much the bartender sucked. Dear DN owners, get rid of the BORING, bartender with NO personality. Anyway, the food in this place is awesome, the service seems disorganized. We were given the wrong food 2x, and someone elses credit card. get it together D.N. the food is amazing. Service needs improvement badly.

I really wanted to give this place 5 stars since supporting my neighborhood businesses is important, but I just can't do it. We recently moved to the burbs from the city, so I can be biased with my Mexican food, since the city has some amazing hidden gems. The service here was great, no complaints there, the restaurant is cute and cozy and I liked the atmosphere. The chips and salsa were blah, the salsa was too runny for my taste. I ordered the Carnitas tacos and was majorly disappointed, the meat was bland, lukewarm and the dish came with rice only. Typically a taco dish or any dish at a Mexican restaurant comes with beans and rice. My husband ordered the steak tacos and said they were okay, I tasted the meat and it was also lacking the authentic flavor. I may come back and try something else, maybe I just picked the wrong item.

So what if their red salsa tasted a bit like tomato sauce, at least it was spicy and it goes well with the chips!!! This place is not for foodies 'nor those seeking the authentic Mexican food experience. Its for those who like reliable and relatively good ethnic food in the north shore area. I enjoyed my steak and fish tacos. I love that they did not serve it with re-fried beans but instead they paired my tacos with green rice. I heard the carne asada burrito was enjoyable topped with fresh salad greens. The kids menu offers a variety. They have a great space for indoor and outdoor (in the summer) dining. The service was prompt, friendly and attentive. I already know I'll be back!
