This is a hidden gem our friend introduced us to. The staff was friendly and the seats were movable so it was pretty wheelchair accessible. There is wheelchair accessible parking. I'm not sure if the restrooms are accessible. My green curry was spicy and not sweet. My sister liked her Thai ice tea and said her pad thai was ok. I ordered a mango smoothie that was very sweet; the whole restaurant roared when they blended it. We both really liked the spicy chicken dish our friend let us try, but I don't remember what it was called.

I usually do not write review, even if I am unhappy. The service of this restaurant is terrible. Food is average, but closest Thai Restaurant to me. One time I ordered takeout, the fried sweet and chicken was placed in a styrofoam. Guess what??? When I got home, the styrofoam was melted by the fried chicken. Had to drive all the way back and hardly any apology from the restaurant. So mad. Today, I placed my takeout order. At pickup, I specifically asked if the rice is in there with the order. She assured me she put it in. Got home, no rice with my dish. WTH?? Don't I need gas to drive back and forth? Told her she should comp an appetizer costing 4.50. She said no way. Need to find myself another closer Thai restaurant. This is no way to do business.

Very rude, unconcerned service , very unfriendly for family and kids- 0 stars for everything! I happened to go to this place at lunchtime as I was walking by with my baby in her stroller. The lady was unhappy to see a lone mom with a kid and thought for a couple of minutes before even offering me a table(she probably wanted to send me right out?!!!). There were empty booths but I suppose she wanted to save them for larger groups that would make her more money. Anyway I didnt care and was ok to sit in the abandoned section on the side where no one else was sitting. I placed my order and waited and waited for it to come. I only got my welcome soup thing like 30 minutes later. Another 15 minutes and my order was still nowhere in sight. I requested the waitress to get me my order but she said they are still working on it. Just then I noticed a couple of girls that had only come in long time after me and were being happily served by the waitress. I got so furious as I had no idea why I was being treated with such impudence, only because I was a mom with a baby??? I felt like shouting on top of my voice as to why all others coming after me were already eating their meals! The food is not worth the bad attitude of the staff and the pathetic service, least friendly for families or kids!

I really wanted to like this place after reading some reviews. However I found it extremely greasy and tasteless. I will not be going back.

The food was fine. Nothing amazing. I had chicken with green curry and my husband had pad Thai. The ambiance and decor are extremely dated. Also while we were dining they ran either a blender, garbage disposal or vacuum in the kitchen that was beyond loud - two times! Everyone in the restaurant (5-6 tables) was looking around in disbelief. It was SO unpleasant and bizarre! Definitely not heading back there again.

Comfy restaurant with a definite family owned and traditional feel to it. The prices and portions are decent and the food has a bit more unique flavors compared to other local Thai restaurants. In general, the flavors are bright and simple - not very complex but it's clear what the theme and main ingredient of each dish are. Vietnamese iced coffee - Not the strongest, not the creamiest -- but definitely a very pleasant flavor. If you've never tried this, you'll realize why there are so many converts away from the coffee chains to this amazing drink. Soft spring rolls - not really as meaty or as savory as what you'll find in a Vietnamese restaurant but the sweet plum sauce with peanuts and sweet egg give this dish a nice touch. The bean sprouts and thai sausage also give this a slightly unique flavor. My only criticism is that the crushed peanuts in the sauce did not have much flavor. Siam pancake - Very crispy and sweet with a variety of textures and colors in the filling. What really makes this dish great is the mix of the ground peanuts with shredded coconut which produce a very aromatic flavor. The cucumber salad this is served with with also very nice and refreshing (and sweet without much acidic flavor). Yellow curry with pork - Not too spicy. The pork here was a bit overcooked but not stringy. The potatoes, onion, and coconut milk helped to temper down the spicyness of the curry. Shrimp lad nar - Decent sized shrimp, served with fresh vegetables over pan fried rice wide-noodle. The noodles had a nice smooth soft texture to them and the black bean sauce was savory and not overpowering. Seafood special noodle - Combination of seafood over egg noodle. Did not really stand out as a great dish but wasn't bad either. I'd go with other dishes over this one. Chicken pad thai -- good sweet and sourness to it. The thin rice noodles were nice and soft (generally I prefer they have some bounce rather than be al-dente). Flavorful but not so much you can't finish the whole dish in a single sitting. Probably one of the better preparations I've had in the area of this dish.

Solid! Everything we've gotten from this place is good! Ate in and carried out as well...

Terrible service. Hotel closes at 10 PM but when we entered at 9.15 PM; we got the bill and food together saying account closes in 10 mins. So we paid before eating. Rude staff..least bothered about customers. Speak in native languages loudly making ambience noisy. Fist and last visit for us...feel bad to waste friday evening here..!! would never return..

I normally do not write reviews regardless how happy or unhappy I am with a place, but I MUST express how crappy my experience was with this restaurant. I ordered spicy basil fried rice (beef) to go today for lunch. After I got home I ate about half of the order and threw the rest away. It was HORRIBLE. the rice tasted like it had been in fridge for days before cooking, it was so hard like little rocks. The vegetables were burnt and the beef did not taste fresh at all! My stomach was hurting the whole afternoon from eating who knows what! I will never come back to this place!

Living up to the hype, this quaint restaurant really packs authentic Thai flavors into every dish. It's clearly family owned and operated, and the dishes really embody it. We ordered spring rolls, and soup to start. Spring rolls were fresh, coated with a generous dose of a sweet and tangy sauce. The soups were flavorful and piping hot (Tom Kha and Hot & Sour). Our main course was two dishes, which were served with a heaping bowl of perfectly cooked white rice. Green Curry Shrimp: served in an oblong dish, the sauce was sweet and spicy, veggies were cooked just enough to bring out their flavor while retaining a fresh, crisp texture. The shrimp were tender and plentiful. Basil Duck: (not on the menu) this was incredible. The owner recommended it as we wanted to try a duck dish along with the shrimp curry. A heaping portion of tender meat and veggies cooked in a remarkable hot basil sauce. The two of us, though satiated about 1/2 way through the entrees, couldn't help but devour every last morsel. I had to hold myself back from licking my plate! Food came quickly, server was attentive and owner offered meal options outside the menu. This is a phenomenal place for authentic Thai, made with love, and the prefect balance of spices!!

Terrible service - seem to be too busy with take out orders to follow up with our table. Ordered spring rolls - came stuck together, so fell apart when trying to each. Bland flavor, did not seem that fresh. My wife order de seafood noodles, asked for It spicy , did my plate instead (I do not eat spicy). That is not the problem, the problem is that the waiter was hard to flag down. Not the highest quality ingredients. I do not recommend his place.

I have been going to I am Siam for years and unfortunately last week's visit will be my last. Not because of the food (which I have always liked), but because of a disgusting unsanitary condition I witnessed. I went on a night of snowstorm, so no customers were in restaurant...I headed right to washroom and noticed somebody in the first stall who was having some issues as the toilet kept flushing. A waitress came out of the stall and she did NOT wash her hands-GROSS!!! When I came out, I told the manager immediately and sat down to see that this specific server was putting plates on all the tables. It took the manager at least 5 minutes to tell the server to go wash her hands (which I heard her turn the faucet on in the kitchen for, literally, 3 seconds- I'm sure her hands were quite clean then!) I never received an apology from the owner either. FYI: I called the health dept and made a complaint. I'll never return to I Am Siam after seeing first-hand the unsanitary conditions of its employees.

We went here for a weeknight dinner couple of weeks back. Got in at 8:23 only to be told that they couldn't serve us because they close at 9 - Seriously?? To my amazement, there was not a single other customer yet this attitude.

After 3 years, we decided to give this place another try. We live close by, and have been pining away over the lack of good Thai restaurants in these parts. This time, the chicken was fresh and delicious, and the basil fried rice was as good as we have had in 20 years or more. The basil was awesome. The only negative was that they need to use a higher grade of onion. Ranky and stanky. Interesting take on spring rolls.

Food is good, slid a little the past few years, and prices went up, but recently the prices went down a little and it is back to the bustling place I remember. Not a fan of the owner watching you look at the menu, and asking you repeatedly what you want, but the best value for thai in the area.

    (3)
  • Kevin R.

Mediocre food, but portions are large. I guess it's an ok value for the price. There are better Thai places in the area. Really surprised that this place has an average of 4 stars.

We will be back for takeout again. Our order was complete and fresh. Best Sweet & Sour dish we've ever had. The red curry chicken was just spicy enough - everything was very fresh!

The duck noodle is good. I think Pad Woon Sen here is gold. Overall, very authentic. I will be coming back. :)

I am not very familiar with Thai food except pad thai. However, after I visit this place, I am willing to try other dishes too! Original, authentic, homemade!

The Mrs. and I went on a double date with one of her new co-workers. I'm always game for Thai so I was interested in trying a new place. This place is in a standard strip-mall, but then again lots of places in the Wheeling and Buffalo Grove area are in places like this, so do not let that deter you if you are in the area. When we entered, we were greeted by an old lady with big Harry Carey glasses. Picture an old Thai lady at a craps table in Vegas and that is a good start.... anyways we're not looking to just talk about the waitress so on to the food. The prices were great and the portions were big. The wife got a large bowl of Tom Yum and a Iced coffee. I went for some Massamun curry. The flavor was there, but the actual quality of hte meat for both dishes was off. The Tom Yum's chicken was dry (if you are slow cooking then use thighs as the breast will become dry!). The curry had slices of beef instead of chunks that slowly simmer in the curry until they fall apart... I am willing to go back and try a few stir fry dishes, but I do not think I'll go back for a Massamun fix.

Had soup tonight, it was just "ok". Chicken with rice noodles. Sorta gave me the "trots"lol! Very spicy but not a lot of flavor.

I am giving 1 star as there is no option to give 0. Terrible service. Hotel closes at 10 PM; but we were forced to pay at 9.30 saying account closes in 10 mins. So we got food and bill at same time and paid before eating. Staff is least bothered about customers and speak loud in their native language so ambience was very noisy. Won't return!! First and last visit for us..

We love take out although dining in is nice also. I prefer the panang curry, spicy but melt in your mouth good over jasmine rice. The potstickers are too thick for me but we like the chicken satay. Lemon chicken and teriyaki chicken are good. The sweet and sour chicken js the best I have tasted, crunchy chicken and not chewy, lite sweet sauce not gooey.

This is one of those restaurants that you would not take your first date to. But if you've been dating for a while or married for better or worse, this is a place for you. It has great food for the better and crappy décor for the worse. Food is good, with great lunch specials, but restaurant needs to be updated badly.

This place is my kind of restaurant. It is clearly a family owned, restaurant where people take great pride in what they're doing. I come here often, try ordering different things and am never disappointed. It's always delicious, fresh, with large quantities. I go to take out as well as sit-down. The prices are fair and I completely disagree with another yelper who said that they don't put enough meat in their entrees. My favorites are: green curry and basil chicken.

This place is so great! They have amazing pad Thai. I get it with tofu and it has small tofu chunks and big tofu chunks. Favorite!

What a pity. My husband and i ate here tonight, hoping to make a new disccovery. While the food is better than most thai restaurants in the area, there are more reasons not to go than to return on the chance they were having a bad night. It was so cold in there, even with our winter jackets on we were cold. The service there was more invested in the people calling and picking up than they were about those actually eating there. The waitress couldn't be bothered with us. Waited forever to even get the bill. Probably wouldn't have noticed if we left without paying..... Really that bad. I ordered a fish dish, it was super dry. Their pud thai was great, as well as the soups and spring roll. Very fresh and tasty. Too bad, not good enough to recommend.

We have been coming here so many times and never have a bad meal Bonnie is the best. This place hasn't been decorated for over 20 years but that is part of the charm. Prices are great food is good, go there you will enjoy it

Solid lunch spot. Lunch specials are served with spring roll and tasty tofu soup. Spring roll was excellent; fresh, nice crunch, delicious sweet sauce hiding underneath. Tofu soup packed with flavor, especially garlic and onion. My order of vegetable Pad Thai was unfortunately just average. Hot, but very unseasoned. The noodles were short, comparable to the broken stuff at the bottom of the complimentary chips and salsa basket. Overall it was a decent price for what I got; large portions and quick service. Plenty of seating inside, able to handle even the largest crowd; unfortunately the herd never made it...somewhat suspicious.

The food is great, but the place could be cleanner. Also, i didn't like the way it smells. The crab rangoons are pretty good.

  • Steven N.

Sorry but this place has some serious deficiencies. First, the restaurant is worn and could use a good cleaning. My wife discovered a small dead bug in the corner of the booth where we were sitting toward the end of dinner. And one of the plates we were given had stuff stuck on it, Second the Pad Thai was bland; as a signature Thai entree that was a surprise. Our Mee Krob, Soft Spring Rolls, Tom Kha Soup, and Panang Chicken Curry however were average. Third, we heard our waitress coughing and someone coughing and sneezing in the kitchen throughout the evening. Hopefully, we won't be catching their colds from eating there. Finally, when we were asked why we hadn't eaten the Pad Thai and answered that it wasn't good there was no response at all. And, of course, there wasn't any adjustment on the bill.

This is definitely a place to order out from, as the environment is a little...well....yeah. The restaurant used to be an IHOP, when I am Siam moved in they never got rid of some of the decor. It's a bit dinky. The food however is pretty good. I've had the pad thai, basil chicken, crab rangoons, thai egg rolls, lettuce wraps and a few other dishes. All are pretty good except the pad thai. It was lacking in flavor and depth. I'd still return, to take out, but I'd skip the pad thai.

    (3)
  • Rod D.

This place is pleasantly surprising. I ordered pad thai and not only did I get pad thai, I also got soup and an appetizer. What a deal...I would definitely go back!

My mom offered to take the BF and I out for dinner last Saturday night. He LOVES all things Asian-y, so, first, she suggested Chef Ping. Since it was already after 7 on a Saturday, it was a good thing we called ahead, because they had a 45 minute wait, and in the 15 minutes it would've taken us to get there, it probably would've expanded. So, we decided to try someplace new, well, new to us. We've all driven past I Am Siam so many times, and just kept on driving. I'm so glad we finally stopped in! Appetizers: Chicken Satay - not dried out, and a large order. Six large kabobs with a healthy portion of peanut sauce and cucumber salad. Mee Krob - This was interesting... warm cellophane noodles (think like underneath mongolian beef) mixed with chili sauce, scallions, and shrimp or tofu. We went with shrimp, and I wish we would've had tofu, because they were baby shrimp. One of my most irrational fears in life is baby shrimp. I hate them. Also, the menu explained that the dish was "topped with a fried egg." Maybe I'm a little spoiled with my gastropub fried egg runny yolk goodness, but this was not it. There were a few slices of scrambled egg on top, definitely not a whole egg. Did not add to or take away from the flavor. I'd order it again. Entrees: Drunken Noodle: very tasty. I've seen this on menus before and never tried it. I was definitely impressed. What I would do is order it with chinese broccoli instead of regular, no one in my family is a fan of broccoli. At any rate, we ordered it at the recommendation of our server (who may have also been the owner?) and were not disappointed. Chicken Green Curry: delicious and spicy! the chicken was tender, and the vegetables and broth plentiful. Basil Eggplant with Pork: This dish was sweeter. It came with ground pork and thai eggplant. I didn't taste much basil, but the flavors were good. Spicy Thai Beef: Almost like beef jerky... not cold, but not hot, slices of beef that seemed to have been semi-dried out, but intense flavors. All in all, everything was delicious, and the portions were HUGE. I will definitely return to I Am Siam when I need a Thai fix.

I've been back again since my original review because I wanted Thai and time was limited. I figured its been 4 years, they could have improved. Ordered the baby egg rolls - pretty good! We fought over the last one wishing there were more in an order. It was that yummy! The pad thai was better, but I still don't understand the short noodles. Hubs ordered the Fried Red Snapper Fish and it took a while! But it was one whole fried fish covered in spicy sauce. He devoured every little bit of meat he could and enjoyed a little lighthearted play with the sharp fish teeth (shark!!!). I'll be returning and hoping for more tasty meals like this one. The service is still good. The owner is this sweet lady with Drew Carry glasses and a friendly welcome.

Good food. Fast service. We were here on a slower Saturday. The food came out quickly, the crab Rangoon was good as were the other appetizers. Drunken Noodles was a favorite. Strip mall restaurant atmosphere.

I have been here one time for a birthday a few years ago so I decided to do take out here the other day. Entrees: 5 Star Chicken and Pork Pad Tai My first observation - huge portions, we should have ordered 1 dish. The food was very flavorful, not overpowering and not too heavy. The chicken had the perfect coating of bread, not too much, and the sauce on it was a little sweet and so yummy. The Pad Tai was perfect, except I would make the pork softer, it was a little dry for my liking. Overall both dishes were much more delicious than what you would expect out of a strip-mall restaurant. The prices are fairly cheap too, especially if you split 1 dish (which you must) it comes out to being around $4 a person! What a steal! I will for sure be back, but next time I will order 1 dish for 2 people.

Followed Yelpers and tried I Am Siam. Thank you Yelpers! Don't be turned off by the old, cheesy, run-down decor. The food was very well done. Beef pad sew was balanced, well seasoned, authentic. The meat was tender and noodles not over-sweet. The pineapple fried rice was the same: tastes like what a loving Thai grandmother would make for me. I've had better stuffed chicken wings, such as the ones at Sri Siam in Glenview. But they weren't bad. Our waitress was a friendly old Thai lady. The place was huge which made it look empty but there were a continuous steam if diners despite it being a weeknight. A nice find overall.

Food is fantastic. Service is a little kooky but fast. And it adds to the atmosphere. We had the pad Thai, green curry and 5 star chicken. All were delicious. Highly recommended!

I love this place. Excellent food and good service. Food quantity is huuugggeee. Soup and spring rolls served during lunch are awesome. It is very reasonably priced restaurant.

Just plain icky. Crab rangoons were enormous flash fried and cold in the center. Blecch! The shrimp Tom Kha was the reason for the one star. Halfway-decent sized shrimp and a rich perfumy broth. The Pad Thai was a mountain of greasy noodles and dry processed chicken. What a f---ing mess. I had to bail after three bites, paid my bill and bounced. Won't be returning. Too bad since I have had several decent lunches there.

Good food, good service, huge portions. Thai iced tea & sticky rice w/ mango are a must. The yelp info listed full bar, which is not true. They only serve beer and wine and we really wished we could have a lychee martini with dinner. Oh well, the food made up for it.

best thai around wheeling! i get the pad woon sen and it is the best ive had! perfect flavoring and non-dry noodles like certain places tend to do. they give huge portions! you can share a dish with another person! the pricing is amazing as well...the person who answers the phone, who i believe is the owner is very friendly. i gotta get a picture up next time i order...which will be very soon because it is very addicting!

I live right down the street from this restaurant and it's one of my favorite Thai places to go to. Anytime any of my friends come, I want to take this to this place! They are so friendly and welcoming when they come in. The two women that usually work there are so nice and treat you like family when you come in. My husband and I usually get the pad se ewe extra crispy with chinese broccoli! It's our favorite dish! The lemon chicken is also fabulous. You also know a thai restaurant is great when they have great thai iced tea. So delicious! Love this place!

This is just downright good food. It's certainly nothing fancy and could benefit from a restaurant makeover. Other than that it's the best Thai food I've had in the suburbs. I always get the Pad Thai and I've never been less than satisfied. I've definitely had my share of Pad Thai and believe it or not, it is easily messed up so I'm awfully particular but I Am Siam passes the test every time. I would also recommend going for lunch. It's a fantastic deal. I think it's something like $6 and you get a soup, appetizer and entree. There aren't too many places with a deal like this anymore. Servers are difficult to understand at times and I would say customer service isn't the focus here. Depending on how you see it, that could be a good thing. I get the feeling this is authentic, family-made food.

I ordered the five star chicken and the spicy Thai beef for me and my girlfriend to have a quiet night in. The lady who answered was a little hard to understand and told me the food would get here when it could. (No specific time.) I think it got here within the hour. The five star chicken was very good, deep fried, and sweet. The spicy Thai beef was not so good. It's seasoned meat on a chunk of lettuce and a cut up tomato. I asked for brown rice which she said was a side so I said that was fine I didn't want the white rice. We ended up with two containers of white rice and one brown. Oh well. Overall it was okay.

I AM SIAM should be renamed to I AM NOTHING LIKE SIAM!!! This restaurant is truly a disappointment for representing such an amazing cuisine. I have always enjoyed having Thai food due to the great flavors and the fresh ingredients; unfortunately you will not get the "fresh ingredients" at this joint! One of my friends was visiting us recently so we decided to have Thai food for dinner so as always I searched for a Thai restaurant nearby since we did not feel like driving too far and therefore we paid the price! Once we arrived to the vicinity of this restaurant we had a hard time finding I AM SIAM since their very large sign was not functional or it was turned off! We ordered bunch of different dishes to share among our group and sadly even the most basic dish such as the pad Thai chicken was not memorable! If you enjoy dinning at apple bees or chilies you might rate this restaurant a 4 star to my humble opinion base on eating at a few dozen Thai restaurants across the country this is not a place I would go back for a second meal! By the way watch out for hair in their steam rice!

  • Katie N.

I am Siam was delicious. While delivery might be a tad slow, the food is delicious. They'll customize your order any way you want, and the food is extremely flavorful! I can't say enough about them! Both my boyfriend and I had pad Thai, one chicken and one beef, I can't speak top how authentic the flavor is, but it sure was delicious. And that's really what matters isn't it. Oh, it wasn't too badly priced either!

The worst Thai food I ever had. Ordered Pad Thai, and it tasted nothing like the real ethnic cuisine. Bleh! Well, what else to expect from fast food type of place? No wonder they have only one star in Chicago magazine.

  • Catherine K.

The portions are HUGE! We ordered the basil chicken, was okay. The red curry, beef was tough and flavor was just okay. Green curry was very flavorful and delish. The restaurant is not crowded, even on a Saturday night. Nice people there, good value, be prepared to leave with leftovers.

  • Virl S.

Always great food here. I've heard some less than great things about dining in, but we always get the takeout. Their five star chicken is deep fried and seasoned to perfection. Their curries are always spiced and prepared to max deliciousness. Never fails.

First try of a Thai spot. Food was fresh and tasty. Best dish was the lemon chicken...more of a beer batter with slightly sweet lemon sauce that didn't drown out the dish. Had the green chili with pork...tough meat/runny sauce/perfect heat...wasn't a wow but I'd do it again. Ginger chicken is full of ginger flavor and vegetables...salty but good. Beef fried rice had more beef in it than I've ever seen and was yum! Many reviews said the portions were huge but the protein amounts for the green chili was lacking for the price. Almost considered giving 3 Stars due to average service and an employee's kid playing video games out loud in the dining room (distracting!)

I am a huge fan of I Am Siam, especially since I live down the street from the place. I love all their noodle dishes, their Lard Nar, Pad Kee Mao, Pad Thai.. just everything! I also love that this place has Papaya Salad which is not at every Thai place I have been to. Oh! and their portions are over the top. My husband and I usually get one entree and share since we can't ever finish more than one entree. The great thing about this place is that they are so friendly and warm when you come in, whether you are carrying out or dining in. They really have their customer service down and I really do appreciate that in a small family owned business.

I'll keep this review relatively simple, unlike the novels I tend to write. When the kids are away, the wife and I tend to go spicy, whether it's Indian, Korean, Thai, etc. By default, we ended up here on a Sunday afternoon. We were only one of two couples in the restaurant at the beginning, and one of three as we finished. Decor is definitely outdated - like stained oak all around the walls with wood paneling - outdated. The carpet is in desperate need of replacing. I think it was burgundy, but very blackened in areas so it was hard to tell. Silverware was beat up and the green flowery plates on the tables were pretty dated as well - pretty beat up as well, that we couldn't tell if it was clean or not. My beer glass was disgusting, as it was apparently clean but had bits of foodstuffs on it. Got a new one right away, but still... Not a good first impression at all. So we ordered some chicken Tom Ka, steamed pot stickers, green curry and yellow curry. Tom Ka is tasty. (thanks for the tip Saturday Guy) Pot stickers were pretty good, and glad to see they were homemade. You would be surprised how many restaurants use frozen ones! The sauce was OK, but this is a preference, being part-Japanese I enjoy a good vinegar-soysauce gyoza sauce. it was too sweet for my taste, but tasty nonetheless. Based on the simplicity of the ingredients, I think the steamed ones were the way to go. Deep-fried would've made them too heavy I think...though I can't say firsthand. Yellow curry was simply good. Larger portions than I'm used to at a Thai restaurant, and as everyone noted in other reviews, fresh ingredients. And that's key. Though I think the pinnacle of our meal was the green curry. My wife ordered it with pork. One of the first things you notice are all the ingredients - little eggplants, onion, bamboo shoots, etc. After a couple bites you realize how tasty it is, and the freshness comes through as you can taste every ingredient used. Definitely one of the best green curries we've tried. For the particular food we had, I'd give a solid 4. But unfortunately the decor and old place settings just brought it down a star.

Best Thai in the area. Love the BBQ Pork Fried Rice and Thai Iced Coffee

One of my friends really likes this place and convinced me to give it another try. This time we ordered the Tom Yum Soup with chicken and the Drunken Noodles with tofu. The Drunken Noodles were pretty good, but could have had more flavor. I think it might be better if you order it with a meat because the tofu was pretty bland. The noodles were a good consistency though. The Tom Yum Soup was fantastic. It was a good spicy and had a ton of flavor. Some of the best soup I have ever had! I would go back for the Tom Yum and I would try another entree or at least switch to meat!

Cute, lil spot for when you are in the mood for some yummy thai food. Haven't been here in a while but used to go all the time when I was craving my fave pad thai. It's the same owner lady as always, who always takes your order, she always has great recommendations and is always friend. The food is just a okay, not the best i've ever had but certainly not the worst, but it gets extra stars just for the service..oh and the portions, they are HUGE, like really really huge, to the point where we have leftovers for the next two days. Oh and the appetizers are also pretty good. So when you're in the mood for a quick stop, the place is pretty big so reservations are never needed, or if you want to carryout, it works, it just works.

Good-sized lunch portions and a certain home-cooked quality about their offerings keep me coming back. I am partial to the red shrimp curry, massaman curry (I prefer chicken with this although beef would be more traditional), garlic pepper pork and tom yum soup. The soups they serve at lunch are kinda bland and are not representative of their full orders. I like my Thai food hot and asking for "very spicy" gets me what I'm looking for. This feels like a family operation and they struggle a little bit when the crowd gets big. The dinner crowd is often much lighter though so you should not have any significant wait then. A random thought... You get a weird feeling that you are sitting at an IHOP when you are in a booth, but then that's probably because this place used to be one. That must've been a very long time ago because I do not smell even the least hint of syrup in the air.

My husband and I have been regulars at this place, until our last few unpleasant encounters! The elderly Asian server has been very rude and unnecessarily persuasive on our orders, she keeps telling us what to order! We ordered the spicy basil fried rice and the drunken noodles. The spicy basil fried rice had no basil and was bland, and we sent it back. They fixed it. The drunken noodles were soggy, super greasy and lacked flavor. When I complained, the server refused to help us. I was disappointed with this rude service in spite of being a regular at this place. I will never go back here! I gave 2 stars for my previous good experiences here, and for the Tom Kha soup that was delicious.

I'm sorry but this place was not good. Granted, I ordered carry-out but in the end, I ended up tossing it out. It was that bad. I wasn't in the mood for cooking (like most nights) and decided to get some Thai food. The closest place was I Am Siam. We ordered the Pad Thai with Chicken and Pad See Eww Both had no flavor and tasted like it was microwaved...soggy. Chicken was tough. Next time, I won't choose location and stick to Gumrai Thai, which I love!

If you like Thai, then you will love this place. While the location seams hard to find weather going East or West on Dundee, Just turn in at the light just East of Buffalo Grove Rd where the Harris Bank is, and it's in the shopping center, back in the NE corner of the center. This is the BEST Ginger chicken I have had. What's even more amazing is I get 3 meals out of it for a price $1-$2 less then most other Thai places. Have a special request. No Problemo. Just ask and they will be happy to accommodate you. FRESH Veggies, crisp and firm, Great Veggie dishes or modify most dishes to Veggie. Mango in season.. to Die for!. Very sweet people here with back home great cooking.

Well, the folks at I am Siam call me 'Saturday guy'! That is because I am on diet these days and I am Siam is where I have my 'cheat' meal of the week - yep, on a Saturday. I am vegetarian, so this review will be from a vegetarian perspective. One good thing is that they will customize the dish for vegetarians - thank god. You could see that a lot of reviews mention Pad Thai and that is absolutely correct. The Pad Thai is yummy! I also like the Yellow Curry (I think they recently changed the recipe for this - even better now), the fried rice and the curry noodle soup (served in a massive bowl). The absolute best is the Tom Ka soup - ah! This is heaven - soup with tofu, veggies, lemongrass in a oh so yummy coconut milk based soup. When it is the mango season, they have Mango with sticky rice - do not miss this! The portions are huge and can easily last 2 meals. That being said, I like my curries a little thicker and I find the green and red curries a little diluted for my liking. I usually dine in, but I have tried take out too - very fast. The staff is super friendly. Looking forward to next Saturday! EDIT: I totally forgot to mention the lunch special on weekdays. For about $8, you get a soup, an appetizer and an entree - the selection is good. I like the corn patty that they give as an appetizer sometimes. I would spend $8 at I am Siam instead of spending $7 for a burrito bowl at Chipotle - if it wasn't for the calories. EDIT: Went back today after 2 years out of the country. And they still remembered me! I did not expect that!

We took home 2 things: 1) Crispy rice salad. Nice flavor and amount, buy very spicy. I normally like spicy, but this made my nose drip and my hair was soaked with sweat. The thing is, the menu description doesn't mention spicy at all, so it was a complete surprise. Beware. 2) Spicy Thai beef. Although the title says spicy, this was just fine. And nice flavor. The problem is, they give so much filler of tomato and cucumber pieces, that there is simply not enough of the beef to justify $8.95.

Ok, I do not understand what the hype is all about. My wife and I ate here several days ago and we were disappointed. I ordered the panang curry chicken. I have had many panang curry's so I have a somewhat understanding on how it should taste like. Unlike the others I have tasted, this curry was very watery and tasteless. The rice was chewy and blend. Btw, my bowl of curry was standing on top of the rice(?). Definitely not coming back. Sorry but I Am Sick.

I love Thai food, and this place has some of the best I've had. I usually get drunken noodles at any Thai place I go, and I think this is my most favorite place to get it. Order it as spicy as you want, but medium is plenty of spice for me! Seriously delicious dish.

just moved into the area so we thought we'd try the local thai place. I haven't previously been a fan of thai food but I am now! this place was excellent. we've been there a few times now and delivery time as well as pick up time are shorter than your average place. the food is excellent. if they say something is spicy, then it is. we will keep ordering from them!

Another great meal here! So It may not look like a dreamy scene overlooking the Andaman Sea, but the food we had made our tummy's very happy. Simple Thai cuisine. Abundant portions with true Thai spice levels. We had Tom Yum soup with Tofu, Pad Thai, and Pad Sieu, and a coconut smoothie with the little tapioca balls...yummy! The Thai owners and servers are quirky but very nice. The service is quick and I always get a second meal from the leftovers. When I'm in Chicago, if I can, I will stop here for some good food. I have been to many Thai restaurants and this is as good as those "gourmet" Thai places. I have to say that Thai places in Chicago are better than what you find in South Florida :( I am Siam, me love you long time

  • George G.

Nice people with good food. Probably the best Thai food in the Chicago suburbs. Certainly the best in the wheeling area. They have good pad see ew and pad Thai noodle dishes. The 5star chicken is really good as well.

The décor is outdated, the service is mediocre and the owner looks like Kim Jung Il, but their green curry is to die for.

This is out favorite Thai restaurant in the area!!! Food is Excellent! Drunken Noodles are very good and so is the Pad Thai! Service is always very warm and wonderful!! I went to pick up take out last week and the waitress invited me to one of the tables for some Hot Tea while I waited (since it was so cold out). Definitely give this place a shot.

As many have said the Pad Thai is solid. I tend to order the Pad See Ewe with Chicken which is also good. Charming Thai place in the nw burbs. Staff has always been really nice and helpful.

Well I Am Siam is my standby. I try other places, they find a way to grossly disappoint me and I come back to I Am Siam. Their portions are HUGE. It's typically about $2 more than everywhere else around here but since there is about 2-3 times as much food and I get 2-3 meals out of one order, it is totally worth it. I ask for the food to be MSG free and this is the great for MSG free suburban thai. Pad Woon Sen and Pad Thai are both great. Crab rangoon are all giant and overstuffed but have a bit too much celery for my taste. The people are always super nice and they will make me Rama noodles even though its not on the menu. Love that. Hard to go wrong here. Always quick take out. I wish they had delivery but oh well. Oh and they take cc's over the phone.

  • Erin L.

My husband and I love this place. The problem is we forget it's there until we are roaming around hungry and have no other ideas. The portions are huge and the management treats you like family. Never had a bad dish, we're addicted to the soft spring rolls, so fresh and crunchy. All the seafood that is in the dishes tastes really good too, which I'm picky about. The prices are so reasonable, we can actually go out for dinner under 25-30 bucks!! That's hard to find these days!

  • Will C.

Ok so I wouldn't call myself any expert when it comes to thai food. I pretty much always just get pad thai. However this place has *the best* pad thai I've ever had, or probably will have. The noodles are orange and I don't know what's in them at all, it's a huge portion and it tastes so phenomenal with a lime squeezed over it. If you're not big into thai food, or not very adventurous, or wanting to open someone up to being more adventurous with their food then I think this is a great place to take them. If anyone has any other thai suggestions for me I'm definitely open to that, I just know it's hard to get anything but one of my favourite dishes in the burbs! Haha Anyway the place is kinda quaint, in a strip mall but a very large inside. The decor is pleasant and modest and the seating is comfortable. They can push tables together for large groups and have booths as well. The lady who seems to run the place is super friendly!

    (4)
  • Akira S.

Great food and service. I live curry there and Tom Ka soup. Fish wit curry is awesome as well. I love this place and service is great. O think I eat whole menu already and no complain so far - only one if you do not like spicy - tell before you order :)

    (5)
  • Erik D.

I order in from here pretty regularly and I think the food is great. Drunken Noodle, Barbecue Pork Fried Rice and the "Golden Bag" are some of my favorites. I also dine in occasionally and like the ambiance. The only word of caution I'd offer is that they don't necessarily scale well to busy times. When things aren't busy carry in and waitstaff service are both prompt and efficient, but if the place gets busy you might be in for longer waits than you'd think, even with carry out.

    (4)
  • Liz L.

My friend took me here and it is pretty good! The service is good and very friendly and the portions are HUGE but it doesn't skimp away from the taste!! The prices are also very very fair. The only reason I gave it a 4 is the decor is a little off...a little dated and could use an update. The food came out really fast! One of my favourites is the Lemon Chicken (Ok I don't eat meat but my friend was raving about it so I tried a little bit)....it isn't like any lemon chicken that I have ever had...it is not too sweet or too tart it is perfect. My friend got the firecracker chicken and pad thai-both very very good, thier potstickers remind me of the ones my mom made when I was growing up (I am Asian)...they taste so good like homemade... Take a friend and go munch on some really yummy food with really nice service!

Good Thai food in extremely large portions but the tables werent clean, plates were kind of dirty too. I guess it is really like Thailand.

Pretty good Thai food.. Service is nothing special but the Pad Thai, Red Curry, Basil Fried Rice, and egg rolls are very good. My favorite memory from here: my Aunt scolding another customer at a nearby table because he was talking on his phone very loudly.

  • Cheryl K.

I LOVE this place. By far the best Thai food around. I've never had a bad meal here. Their hot sauce is amazing, the spring rolls amazing. Not fried, but super fresh. I do wish it were a bit cleaner tho, but not too bad that it stops me from going. I'll be back soon.

  • Max E.

This is some of the best Thai food in the Chicago area. We've tried other places but always end up wanting to go back. The Pad-See-Ew is one of our regular dishes and it never disappoints. The owner is great. The place definitely has character.

  • Jennifer Q.

Hands down my favorite Thai food of all time. I used to eat here all the time when I lived in the burbs. The staff is very friendly, especially the "matriarch" of the restaurant, who I believe is the owner. She is really cute and funny. They have many, many unique dishes here that are all absolutely delicious! And they have a lot of cool smoothie type drinks with those cool little tapioca balls in them! If you happen to be out this way, I highly recommend it!

3.5 stars: Good Thai food in the suburbs This place is good to get takeout because they don't skimp on their portions and because you won't miss the dining in experience - their service is fine, but the interior decor and atmosphere is dated and drab. The food is great, I usually order the Garlic Pepper Pork, Green Curry, Spicy Basil Fried Rice, and I request them all "Thai hot" - only do that if you're certain you can handle the heat because they don't joke around! If you don't look Asian, however, they won't trust that you really want it spicy (their version of "Thai hot" for my friend was nowhere near as hot as my dish). Their Pad Thai and other noodle dishes are nothing special. The lunch menu is cheaper, but the portions are smaller.

    (4)
  • Mike S.

My family goes here a lot, and I have to say that it is a consistently good meal every time. Service is good and the atmosphere is nice - even when the place gets crowded. Personally, I love the Spicy Salmon and the Curry Fried Rice, but the Pad Thai is also a dish worth noting.

I always get the same things here because if I get anything else, it's not very good. Good - tom yum soup (medium spicy, filled with a lot of chicken, onions, mushrooms, tomatoes), tom ka, spicy basil fried rice, curry fried rice, egg rolls Ok - pad thai, pork or chicken with garlic and black pepper Bad - pad see ewe, green curry, siam crispy noodles, BBQ pork fried rice, chicken fried rice

I love I Am Siam. Prices are great, portions are huge, and the food is always pretty damn good. Ordered lunch once, and although they don't deliver during lunch hours and were very busy, the owner decided to deliver the food herself. We love their curry, and their lunch specials are AWESOME. Their eggrolls have real meat in them, not stuffed with cabbage like the other places. I LOVE their lemon chicken! AMAZING! It comes with fried basil, which is the perfect addition.

I have never had any "authentic" Thai food and wanted to give it a try. For our fist foray with Thai, we both ordered Pad Thai; I the beef, spicy, my wife the chicken, mild. The flavor was great, the ingredients were fresh, and the helping was large but I could not tell that mine was any more spicy than hers -- almost no heat at all. Service was a little slow. The decor and atmosphere were clean, pleasant and comfortable. A nice surprise was a cut orange after the meal. We will return to try more, adventurous, Thai food.

  • Brian W.

I love I am Siam. It is a little hole in the wall Thai joint with some great food. Try the basil rice. You can get spice anywhere from mild to eye watering, and the menu is pretty extensive. The meats tend to be lightly breaded and fried, a step up from most places like this. The iced tea is fantastic too. Not the thai iced tea, but the regular iced tea. I think they use Oolong tea and it has a pretty unique flavor. I especially am amused by the owner lady with the glasses. Totally Thai. As for ambiance.... well its a hole in the wall joint. Its not going to win any style awards, but I'm here for the food, not the view.

My favorite Thai restaurant, hands down. (Try the spring roll!) I'd give 5 stars if they would shampoo the carpeting, it is very dirty!

I typically dont like writing reviews unless I've tried a place out at least twice. But I have already made up my mind about this place....Its the best Thai ive tasted in the burbs outside of Chicago. I had the Crab Rangoon, Tom Ka Chicken Soup, Pad Thai Chicken, Pinapple fried-rice with shrimp and the 5-Star Chicken.

Traditional Thai food prepared for 20 years by the same people. Place is always clean and service is always prompt.

Soooo...I am still on my quest for a really good Thai place. I would actually give this place a 3 1/2. This is the best place in the North burbs so far. I was joined by a few girls from work. I ordered the veggie egg rolls and the cashew with chicken. It was good and spicy. The service was good and very entertaining. I will be sure to stop by again.

I don't know how authentic this place is, probably not very, but the food is very good and high quality. The menu is varied enough to find something for my daughter, in her crabby, picky mood. We had the Thai egg rolls, full of ground chicken and I'm not sure what else, but very tasty! Not enough sweet &sour sauce for 2 people. The child had sweet & sour chicken, big chunks of deep fried chicken breast, the light batter still crisp and crackly from the fryer, lots of tomato, peppers, cukes, and thankfully, no maraschino cherries! Just pineapple. I had Lad Nar with beef. Platter piled high with noodles, good amount of beef, and crisp tender broccoli. The beef was tender but it had a strange mouth feel, like it was a tougher cut, like round steak that was soaked in tenderizer, but it didn't have the salty taste. Portions are enormous, we could easily have skipped the egg rolls and just gotten one entree. What we'd have liked (and should've asked for) is a bowl of sweet chili sauce and tea. I think that should be standard, just bring out a squeeze bottle of chili sauce. Service was good, we went right before the dinner rush because we were going to a movie right after dinner. Decor is bland but pleasant and I liked the celadon elephant plates. I recommend going with a lot of people and sharing dishes-I hate that about going out with my daughter; she's a kid and we can't really experiment because if she's in a pissy mood, she wants what she knows, no surprises for her. UPDATE 4/12/08 Yeah, defintely round steak. Spicy basil fried rice was tasty but the meat was tough. Tom Ka soup was yummy, but chicken breast chunks were tough. But it was still really good. So I won't take away any stars. Even for the disgusting artificial tasting smoothies-just beware and don't order one, you should be ok.

The moo ping appetizer is NOT to be missed! AMAZING! I am a Pad Thai lover this one is pretty good. I always get shrimp / med spicy.some days it is better than others....the best being Saturdays. Whoevers hand does the cooking that day is a pro! All appetizers are very good. Hot and sour soup is nice as well....if you like it more brothy just ask!

Decent thai food in the suburbs, check. I came here on a week night for dinner. It was pretty quiet, maybe 2 or 3 other tables were occupied. We were seated immediately in a booth, The seats were a bit torn up and our table was quite slanted- thankfully nothing fell off. We ordered the yellow curry (it tasted similar to what panang curry would taste like in any other thai restaurant) and the spicy beef. The spicy beef was marinated in a tasty sauce and then grilled and presented over a bed of veggies. Both turned out really well. I would say that I enjoyed the spicy beef a little more, only cause it was different from anything i've tried before. The service was quick and friendly. The waitress had several funny/flirty remarks since I was dining with guy. It was playful and entertaining. The prices were really affordable, about $10/ dish.

I am almost embarrassed to admit that I love living in the suburbs. The one HUGE drawback is; no real Thia food. My husband and I are Thai food junkies and, unfortunately, we have been in Thai food withdrawal since moving out to the burbs. Until we discovered I am Siam. Now, this is not the authentic Thai food one gets on east Devon Avenue at one of the Thai owned hole-in-the-walls that have THE BEST THAI FOOD EVER; but, it ain't bad. The Pinang Beef is very good; as spicy as you want it; and one portion can easily feed two. The Thai spring rolls are awesome and always fresh. The room is a bit diner-esque, but we always get takeout anyway. I am Siam is perfectly passable Thai food. And, beggars can't really be choosers, now can they?

Quick service and really good pad sewe. You will feel hurried though, they don't like you sitting around too long. This should be called "In and Out Thai food".

I think this place is great. I used to work in the area and my colleagues and I would go to lunch there often. Whenever I'm in the area I stop by for my Fav..extra spicey Basil Chicken. The service at times can be a little questionable...but when the food comes...everything is forgiven!

    (4)
  • Anish C.

The red curry and green curry was a good combination of coconut cream and Thai herbs. The chicken itself could have been a little better. The shrimp was pretty good though.I've been to Bangkok and the food is not pure Thai but it seems to have been modified to suit American tastes. There is a lot of choice and variety in the Menu. The service is brisk but we tried to get some more details out of them regarding the food but weren't too successfull. The prices will not blow a hole in your pocket. At the end of my meal I wasn't sure if they served alcohol as they seemed to have some stuff on display but a menu never came.

I'm giving it four stars cuz' Bonnie alwayz hooks me up. Get the Five star chicken and crab meat fried rice, with some iced Thai coffee. Start with the egg rolls or the golden balls. When your full take the rest home. Repeat as necessary. Good portions and tasty food... ask her to surprise you, and well, you'll be drinking a lot of water~

Don't let the atmosphere fool you. This place is one of the better Thai restaurants in the area. You better bring your appetite because their portions are huge. The Pad Thai and the Thai Fried rice are very good.

  • Justin G.

I cannot say I'm impressed with this place. I came here for lunch after all of the rave reviews. The price is right, but the food is okay. I had the Mussaman curry beef. I will say that I do plan on coming back, but I will try a noodle dish. It seemed like this is what most people were getting and the mounds of noodles looked huge. Other than that, it felt like the waitstaff was rushing people.

This is great food. A huge selection of authentic and not-so-authentic choices on the menu. Don't let the plain decor influence your experience (Though, I often wonder if this restaurant used to be an IHOP at some point). If you love garlic, like myself, you are not gonna wanna miss the garlic and black pepper chicken. I think they use an entire bulb of garlic for this extremely tasty dish. The peanut sauce for the Satay is like no other that i have tasted, and I have have tasted many-a-peanut-sauce. Also try: Mee Krob (sweet, crispy rice), Pud Thai (a spicy and sweet noodle dish that seems to be everyone's favorite), BBQ pork friend rice (My mom requests this dish extra spicy and nick-named it "flame thrower rice"), panang (a curry dish). Even though this place is not too close to me, it is so good, I keep coming back as often as I can.

Big portions, friendly help and good food. Try the pad thai with shrimp. It's not real fancy but the quality and taste of the food makes up for that

Just go for the food. The service is super fast. They even know what you want at times if you are a regular. The old lady and family members do not have great customer skills, But they are family owned, I give credit for that. Curry chicken is so good. Try pad thai too. Lunch food. Yumm for the price.

I am so happy I found this place! It was actually a recommedation from a co-worker. I usually judge a thai restaurant by thier spicy beef salad and this place banked it...I was in heaven. I havent had authentic thai food like this in like 10 years. Its not easy to find a good place but now I did. The only reason I didnt give them 5 stars is because the place looked like I should be ordering bacon and eggs but all that went out the window with one bite of the food.

Nice place. Good food and service. One of the good places for authentic thai food. I takeout from this place often. .I like the duck curry in this place...make it very spicy and then try it...Keep up the good work guys.

  • AJ H.

I Am Siam offers standard Thai food and ridiculously large portions. It is all very good, but the food seems very heavy and a bit overly sauced. Also, no matter how we ask for our food to be spiced (mild, medium, hot), it always comes out at the same spice level. They do not have many vegetarian appetizer options, and they are always out of their summer rolls. Everybody that works here is very nice...once when we ordered takeout they forgot to include one of our dishes in our bag, but when we called they quickly brought it to us at home and the driver refused to take a $2 tip for her trouble.

i've been here multiple times. the place is okay. nothing special about it. I've tried their lard nar, pad thai, fried rice, and red curry. Never get anything with beef or chicken, I only get shrimp or tofu. The beef especially is pretty bad. It's just really tough and cheap... but besides that the food is pretty good. I typically always get their red curry. I've heard grea things about their panang curry too. My other huge complaint is the fact that they charged me an extra $1.75 for a little more rice! i know $1.75 isn't much but come on. By this point I had already been there about 4 times within a few weeks. I guess I'm used to places that are extra nice and special to their regulars.

I love it. Curry really turned me off as a kid but dishes like the yellow curry here at I Am Siam, converted me into a believer. It even helped turn me on to Indian food as well. The pad thai is great and goes without saying, but again, I really like the curry dishes here.

Carried out from here last night and had the usual great meal. Chicken Pad Thai was excellent, as was the Beef Pad See Ewe and the Panang Curry with Chicken. I've never had a "bad" meal here. The only problem is that I ALWAYS have to wait for my take-out. I was told 30 minutes and it was more like 45. Oh well, I guess that's better than it being cold and waiting for me, right? Busy restaurant usually means good food...
