Great place for sushi, bento, and any type of tempura the heart could desire. Been going here for over ten years and have experienced nothing but consistent food and service. The place is extremely pricey if you choose to eat dinner their so i would recommend giving them a try for lunch. The menu is slightly smaller for lunch but they still have most of their signature dishes (also prices are literally cut in half; something that would be around 20-22$ for dinner is like 9-10$ for lunch. The location is pretty small but ive never had any issues with being seated other than on occasion for dinner. Would recommend: -Bento box lunch special ( comes with choice of meat, beef, salmon, or chicken teriyaki. 2 GIGANTIC California Rolls. Salad with sesame dressing. Vegetable and shrimp tempura). -Chicken Teriyaki meal -Sushi Deluxe Lunch (about 8 variety's of sushi with your choice of either 6 california rolls, tuna rolls, or cucumber rolls) -Gyoza appetizer is great for a starter too! And all meals come with miso soup and the hottest, and strongest green tea i have ever had.

At the beginning of my meal, I thought I would give this place three stars, then two stars, then it dropped to one star. I decided to come here after seeing 4 stars on yelp with a two dollar sign $$. I didn't look in detail enough, I suppose, but the Yelp Elite member showed a pic with very "rice padded" sushi. The overall rating, is one of the very few times Yelp has disappointed me (and my wallet). The only good thing about this place is the quick and friendly service. The sushi is pricey. It's $8 for a Philadelphia roll that only has a tiny sliver of salmon. See other sushi photos- they all follow this same trend. The veggie tempura was also pricey for what it was. A soda was $2.25. Everything was so high. This is not downtown Chicago! This is a little "hole in the wall" in Westmont, and I can't imagine that their overhead is so high that their sushi prices exceed other sushi restaurant's prices in the area. I would expect $5 for maki, not $8. And every item adds up. I will not be coming back here again. While I commend the service of the waitress, I'm not happy to drop $30/person for slim sushi.

I'm always on these temporary "healthy" diets but I did not want to cook anything on a Saturday night. So, my parents suggested a sushi joint owned by some Japanese folks. When was the last time you met somebody from Japan? Not some Asian fellow who probably is Chinese or Koreanese, but a real Japanesian. After experiencing their food, I'd say this is the most authentic Japanese food I have yet to have in the Chicago burbs. Maybe I am jaded cuz I think the owners are Japanese. Nonetheless, the food tastes FAF (fresh as frick). The food here is 5-stars, but you have to pay a hefty price for it. There are a lot of pricey sushi places out there that cost a lot and have great presentation, but their sashimi tastes and feels limp and not fresh. This place has some FFrF (fricken fine raw fish). It took a long time to get our food. My party arrived fairly early in the night so we did not have to wait for seating (can't make reservations for groups under a party of SIX btw..), but there were customers arriving later who had a long wait. Watching the waitresses running frantically around stressed me out. There might have only been two people on the wait staff that night handling the entire restaurant. The longest wait was for the first dish to come out. After the first dish came out, the long wait in between dishes didn't bother me as much since I wasn't salivating every time the waitress passed me with an order fresh out of the oven. TLDR: Service can be better but their sushi is fresh and delicious

Small hole in the wall place. Food was okay but was a bit overpriced. I had a bento box and it was meh. The bento box did not come with the usual fixings, which seems strange (no California roll and there was a seaweed salad). The decor was nice and service was good but due to some of the pricing and the food quality I probably will not return.

I was thinking late lunch, get out of the rain. ..... missed it ! They're closed for lunch ? Oh well back to TOW
(4)Kyle J.
Ok now I feel bad about the rating. Food still very good. (Try the grilled Saba appetizer). And the sukiyaki is great. Two stars during the week cuz understaffed and slow (their choice). Four stars weekend. Three average!

Yokohama is one of my favorite sushi spots around the suburbs. The sushi chef/owners I believe are Japanese so the food is as authentic as it gets stateside. The fish tastes fresh, plating and presentation is delicate, and decor is cozy. Their lunch deals are a good value, while dinner is a bit pricey. I have to recommend the katsu dishes and lunch/dinner boats. Love love love.
(5)Jeff S.
I've reviewed Yokohama before, but I've eaten there so many times that I figured, do it again. Went there this past week with my youngest and we went nuts. We both consider the place a complete treat. Did the sake and yellowtail, with noodle salad and miso soup for starters. Finished off with a dragon roll. Yokohama has been consistently excellent for us for years, very dependable. Friendly service, quick, and great food. Is it cheap? Nah. But also most definitely NOT the most expensive sushi joint in the world. As always, highly recommended.
(4)Susie C.
Yum! This cute little place has delicious sushi! We ordered many pieces of their salmon and yellowtail nigiri. The fish chunks are HUGE. They taste so juicy! love love love! We also ordered few other rolls. The TNT roll is not so good, but the spicy salmon and dancing dragon rolls were good. Also liked their beef bowl dishes, too. Our waitress was super friendly. Since it's New Years around the corner they gave us free calendars to take home. I would definitely come back to this place if it wasn't too far away.

My fiancé and I are in town for the holidays from Houston to visit my family. Something we like to do is get sushi on Christmas Eve. The sushi here is great. We are members of the sushi club in Houston so we've gone to MANY sushi restaurants and know how quality and authenticity can range. If you like nigiri you are in the right place. You get nice thick pieces of fish. No paper thin slices were you can see the rice thru the fish. When I get nigiri that's thick-I'm sold. If you like rolls, you're covered. Literally. The spider roll is as big as a burrito! Huge and delicious. If you like trying new things (obviously you do because you like sushi) try an appetizer. They had octopus in many ways. We got the cheese fish cake tempura. It was like fish with cream cheese in the middle and served tempura style with dipping sauce. It was excellent. If you enjoy quality sushi, come here. Amen.
(5)K O.
Might not look fancy on the outside but this place has some of the freshest sushi around. Love this place!
(5)Eric H.
A little warm in there when it's hot outside. I don't know if their AC's broke? In terms of food, it's very authentic and really good! The service was great too! I would definitely go back for more sashimi and bento boxes!
(4)vanessa b.
Ok sushi, super slow service. The spicy salmon and spicy tuna are not that spicy. The miso soup is like any other miso soup.
(3)Brooke A.
Very good sushi. Had the maki lunch with spicy tuna, salmon skin, and crab rolls. The rolls are little different than I'm use to, smaller with the seaweed on the outside. All were out together perfectly and we very fresh. The only complaint is the soy sauce...it was very salty, almost to a point of not wanting to use it. Never been a problem for me. Not sure why and I didn't see any low sodium variety Very nondescript place. Great little sushi joint and worth checking out is you are in the west suburbs.
(5)Jon F.
Fresh fish and well made rolls - its hard to ask for much more, but they bring it with some interesting creations like the Golden Ocean roll! Off season soft shell crab was good and my go-to maki the spider roll was fantastic. The golden ocean was good (though watch for creme cheese if its not your thing) and the service was prompt and friendly. The parking lot and location was a bit of a pain for lazy burbs folks, but if you know where you are going (Google told me West off Cass instead of East) its a non-issue.

I wish I could get out here more, but most of the times that I've come to this quiet, unassuming restaurant I've made a special trip. Before sushi became a craze, it was being served at Yokohama with care and pride, along with a number of really great dishes. I've only eaten at a few 'Japanese' restaurants, and I have no experience of Japanese food outside of that, so I can't judge the food off of any standard apart from my own personal tastes; however, I loves me the raw seafood, and I've eaten it in all sorts of ways. Unlike the new sushi restaurants and dishes, which bury the fish beneath so much stuff that you probably wouldn't have noticed if they had left the fish out, Yokohama still preserves and enhances the tastes and textures of raw fish, and I love that about this place. After ten years and a couple of dozen visits, I can say that the service and the food have always been warm and inviting, and I particularly like the soft shell crab, the eel, and the tempura dishes; sometimes I even get the veggie tempura along with a whole other meal.
(5)Howard L.
This a charming, friendly, and authentic Japanese sushi bar with quality servings. It's a quiet little place with a traditional sushi bar area with a few tables, and a separate small dining area behind a partial wall. We had a bento box C - beef teriyaki, tempura, and sashimi, as well as a couple of rolls - California and an avocado/cucumber roll. Excellent quality and presentation. They also serve cold sake in a traditional wood box and with a little salt on the side, and this was the first time I tried it in that style (it's not offered that way in most places). All in, it was $49 total for the two of us, and given the portion sizes, may be on the slightly pricey side. I still rate it highly though, about 4.5 stars, for the ambiance, peacefulness, and tradition of the setting, and the quality of the servings. The Japanese owner-chef was right behind the bar working his craft. They've been around since 1983 according to a write-up there. We'll be back.
(4)Hank O.
I noticed my revew was 2 years old ...I am still a huge fan love the food and the staff going on over 20 years now.
(5)Fernando F.
Great sashimi! The staff was incredibly kind as well, but the fish, octopus, and squid is the best in the chicago land area and the reason I give Yokohama five stars.
(5)Chris J.
Service was good sushi tasted like it came from Dominick's
(2)Jennifer M.
I was expecting so much after reading all these reviews... but after coming here, my best guess is that there's not really good sushi in the area. I was like "wow, 4.5 stars on yelp... gotta try this place out" Service was nice (which would up my rating from 1 to 1.5 stars) but sushi was.... off... to put it nicely. The spider roll was HUGE... with stuff that shouldn't be in a spider roll. also bland. Other rolls on the other hand were WAYYYY too small. Among some of the sushi we ordered: Spicy tuna? ... bland... and old tuna? Salmon skin roll? ... what salmon skin? Salmon sashimi? large chunk/slice of salmon. "ok" in freshness In summary: Truly, very, extremely, sorely disappointing. One of the worst sushi bars I've been to actually.
(1)Jie S.
A solid 4 stars for this little nice restaurant off the westmont train station. The chefs say "Welcome" in Japanese as you walk in. Felt very authentic. Ordered Sashimi which is basically a good test on how fresh the fish is. Also had the Golden Ocean roll as it was mentioned a few times on the review. Sashimi came out very nice presentation with Tuna, Salmon, whitefish, Squid, and Scallop. All were fresh and delicious. Golden Ocean roll was a surprise to me as it was fish and squid stir-fired in curry sauce then over the California rolls. It was new and interesting. We also tried the salt water eel and fresh water eel which I liked the fresh water eel better. It is slightly on the expensive side as we spend almost %50 including tip for a lunch. Definitely a great place if you want to try fresh raw Sashimi. Although I do have a minor complain on their ventilation, I don't like to smell like lunch when I go back to the work after lunch.
(4)Jenni E.
This little hole-in-the wall restaurant turns out to be one of the better sushi places in the area. The sushi was very fresh and they offer great lunch specials for those who are looking for a good deal.
(4)Denise V.
It's easy to overlook this little hole-in-the-wall spot in a strip mall, especially with the relatively plain facade, but don't miss this fantastic, classic sushi place. Expect a lot of standards with some neat special rolls. I would recommend skipping one of the plain vegetable rolls that's basically lettuce/tomato/mayo since it's as bland as it sounds (hey, I thought I'd give it a shot, but it's probably good for people in the mood for something mild), but everything else was wonderful.
(4)Martin D.
Of the very few reviews this year all but one is 4 or 5 stars. Either the other Yelpers are thinking like I am that it was a bad night and didn't come back or they just didn't care enough to comment. I can't not comment. The fish was off, the plating was off, the sushi guy (can't be a chef) was arguing with the server each time he screwed up an order and he screwed up all of them while we were there. The server and the sushi preparer didn't speak any English so when we asked what was the freshest fish he answered "yes". We asked for fresh crab and got pollock. The sushi rice was so sticky it should not be called rice. We've eaten at most of the sushi spots in Western Subs and many in town and in many other towns. This night it was so bad we won't be returning because it just isn't worth it.
(1)Susan B.
I love the atmosphere almost more than the food. It doesn't try to be a sexy downtown sushi restaurant, but rather reminds me of small sushi places in Japan. Minimalist decor, polite sushi chefs and waitresses who greet diners with the traditional Japanese words for welcome, and sushi and other dishes that don't try too hard. It's also a nice spot to meet a friend for a leisurely lunch or dinner. No pressure to finish quickly.
(4)Patrick Y.
First time I have had sushi in the area, and it was a pleasant experience. The first things I noticed were the Japanese sushi chefs making rolls, and the Japanese waitress greeting us very politely. Knowing the people that run the place made this dinner feel legit. My friend and I had the spicy tuna roll, Alaskan roll, and yellowtail roll, with the smoked salmon in the Alaskan roll being quite delicious. Sushi tends to be a more expensive food due to the heavy use of fresh seafood, so nothing unexpected when it came to price. Though I'm personally not a big fan of sushi, I would definitely recommend this small and friendly establishment for any friends looking for quality and authentic sushi in the area.
(4)Cheryl Q.
If you love traditional sushi and Japanese food, this is one of those little holes in the wall type of place to seek out. Small & quaint the way I like them. Always very fresh with a chef who knows the delicate balance of making the perfect piece of sushi. The same servers have been there forever and are always very polite! No matter how filled the restaurant is, their service is prompt and never a mistake. Not only is their sushi the best, best even the miso soup and seaweed salads are a more authentic simple delight~not over americanized!
(4)Jana J.
Delicious sushi and traditional Japanese food, it does get pricey but the food and experience is totally worth it.
(5)Phil S.
OK, this is an easy review.....BEST Sushi in DuPage county! Everything is fresh and the taste is perfect. The imported Sake comes in a wood crate to drink out of. If you like/love Sushi or want to try it for the first time, this is the place to go!
(5)Kari C.
This has turned into our go-to place for sushi in the Western 'burbs. We've found their quality and price to be the best we've encountered around. Which is probably why you're wondering why the 2 stars... Well good sushi is ruined by poor customer service. My husband and I came home from a long day of work and decided to forego our planned homecooked meal in favor of some sushi to-go. We even picked up some sake to enjoy with it. After we put the baby to bed, we called to place our to-go order. "We're too busy right now to take take-out orders." Ummmmm, okay? "How about you call back in an hour?" Reallllllllly? On a Tuesday evening? To be honest, on any evening that's just lame. We asked, "If we walk in would you take our order?" Yeah, they'd take our order then. Seriously? Well, they just lost our business, for now at least, and we'll be ordering from our backup sushi place around the corner.
(2)Joan A.
Love this place, been coming here for over 15 years. No gimmicks, no overly fancy rolls. Everything is fresh and unmatched as far as taste goes.
(5)Nawal T.
Great sashimi. Very fresh. Excellent service. A bit expensive
(4)Alexandra D.
Freshest fish in the suburbs. Place is no-frills, so if you're looking for glam, go to Nabuki in Hinsdale. But if you care about the food foremost, this is your spot - and the prices are low. Customer service is very much like what you'd find in Japan: quiet, quick and efficient.
(5)Stacy L.
Beef wrapped asparagus is amazing! Westmont Roll - their "spin" on the California Roll is delicious! Everything is wonderful that I've had here. Cozy place, warm and great atmosphere, friendly and helpful to those learning the sushi world. My honey and I have grown to love this place and every visit is just as good as the previous. Hiromi is the sweetest server! So full of life and energy, very thoughtful and helpful...always going that extra mile to make sure all the patrons are happy and educated! :) I love YOKOHAMA!
(5)Angela F.
'Utter and complete let-down' are the first words that come to mind when I recall my experience at Yokohama. I was so disappointed with this visit that it pains me a little bit to write this review. Taking into account all the positive Yelp reviews and restaurant's proximity to the Westmont train station (from which I commute to the city every day), I decided to cheat on our regular, beloved sushi place. One star for that. Yokohama does not have a website, nor do they print take-out menus (it's their restaurant - I guess it's their right to make giving them your money difficult!) so I had to physically go to the restaurant to review a menu and place my take-out order. I was fine with this; figured I'd sit at the bar and watch the chef work his sushi magic. Entering the restaurant is where this experience starts to go down hill. I am seated at the bar with a menu...and then completely ignored for 30 minutes. There is one waitress for 8 or 9 parties in the restaurant, and I initially give her the benefit of the doubt because I figure maybe someone called in sick and they're short-handed. Then I hear someone I presume to be a 'regular' ask her if this is the case; she replied 'No.' Once I figure out what I'm going to order, I'm doing everything short of lighting flares to get the waitress' attention. The two sushi chefs either don't speak English or pretend they don't speak English, because I've elicited better responses from brick walls. I finally decide to get up and physically track the waitress down. She takes my order, and I go back to my corner. Only to add to my ire at this point is the fact that the restaurant's phone had been ringing NON-STOP since I walked through the front door, and no one bothered to answer it. Not once. Let me reiterate that I was in this restaurant for 45 minutes and the phone rang the ENTIRE time. When my order finally arrived, the waitress took my credit card and returned with the slip for me to sign. And had the nerve to circle the line on the receipt where I was to add a tip for her!! Please Lord, let me wake up from this service nightmare!! The other star is derived from the fact that the sushi was *alright*. The nigiri was fresh. The rolls were nothing to write home about; they are entirely too large to eat in one bite, and you lose the pleasure of enjoying the compliment & contrast of the ingredients given you have to eat them in more than one bite (3 bites in the case of the Westmont roll). Meh. Can't recommend Yokohama, and refuse to waste my sushi budget giving them a second chance.
(2)Grace S.
Loved this place. Very reasonable. Authentic Japanese food! Yum
(4)Matt K.
Another favorite of ours, for me the best sushi in the western suburbs. I like my sushi traditional, not the 'modern' varieties, I like to taste the fish and not the fancy western sauces other places hide their old stock under. sushi & sashimi is where they deliver, but their teriyaki is stellar and I could easily just stick to the appetizers, a highlight among many: the beef asparagus. dont't judge this place by its outside. do not rush, spend some time here, you won't be disappointed. great dinner spot ... keep the sake coming.
(5)Diane H.
Went there for lunch yesterday ...the website says it was open. Much to my disappointment, the sign on the door said closed on Mondays. Please update the information. Hard to review so I will pick the middle of the road.
(3)Willy W.
They have recently raised their prices. Portion size have seriously shrunk. After eating their lunch bento specials, I'm not even full. I mean, where'd all the food go? I finished the bento box, but yet, I'm still hungry. I would appreciate it if they actually filled up my bowl with more miso soup. Oh yeah, and in my bowl I can only find 1 little tofu.. (They have been only filling it up halfway...) Seriously, it's miso soup (water + miso paste + 2 small slices of tofu + seaweed) The service was kind of slow and it wasn't even that busy. My friend and I had to kinda wait a while for the food to come out. Look, I would completely understand if it was busy, but there were only 3 small tables including us. Pretty good sushi though.
(3)Spencer B.
Very good sushi! My son likes the cooked steak too. We've never been disappointed here!
(4)Dan K.
My buddy took me here this past weekend. He says it's his and his fiance's favorite spot. I must say I was pretty blown away. At first glance, it doesn't look like much. It's very low key, and reminiscent of the typical "not-good" sushi places. But, other than that it's excellent. First of all, they hook you up with a hot towel to wash your hands. We had some warm sake, and it was good stuff. Also got a drink, btw, yes they had free refills. We had a few rolls, but the best dish was one of their specials called the Golden Ocean (I think). It's like a spicy mix of octopus, and california rolls and other seafood. We also got a spider roll and this thing was ginormous. I mean, the size of the roll was just huge. You pretty much have to take it in two bites. And the dancing dragon roll had huge cuts of eel. Not the miniscule 1mm slices you see at some places. All in all, this place is one of my favorites now. Between the price and the quality of food, you can't go wrong. The service was a little sub par, but honestly it wasn't too bad. Still 5 *
(5)Gloria L.
Such good sushi rolls and their sashimi special is delicious. Just great cuts of fish and the salmon just melts in your mouth. They don't often have too many waitresses on staff which can slow things down a little bit but I haven't had a bad experience there yet. It's a small quaint place, I wouldn't try to go with a party of more than 6 people.
(4)Dan R.
Great sushi at a reasonable cost in a mellow atmosphere. What else can I say? I have been going to Yokohama for at least 10 years and its always the same and always excellent. Yokohama stands above the other pro forma sushis shops in very subtle ways. They have a good 'wa' going for them.
(5)Dennis L.
One of the best Japanese restaurant in my area. The sushi is very fresh and the place is pretty clean.
(4)Matt B.
Yokohama is a nice, small sushi restaurant with a pleasant staff and a loyal customer base. The main problem with their sushi is the size. Rolls are cut into massive pieces, and it can take three bites before you finish one. Of course, on the first bite, the whole thing falls apart, tumbling to your plate in a pathetic mass of rice and fish shrapnel, and you're trying not to look like a complete pig in front of your date, since you just attempted to bite into a maki roll the size of a medium-sized child's fist, and now you're left with sticky remnants of your failure clinging to your face like so many snowflakes, thinking about how there is no possible way you will be getting lucky tonight. Oh, and the prices are pretty fair, too.
(3)Tammy D.
We saw the reviews on here and thought we'd give it a try. It was good, but overall we weren't impressed. There are better sushi places in the area. The sushi was fresh, but the nothing extraordinary. The wait staff was ok, but not overly friendly. The restaurant itself was cramped and not very welcoming. Next time we want sushi, we'll go somewhere else.
(2)Danny Y.
DISHES WE'VE TRIED: tuna nigiri - 4.5 salmon nigiri - 4.5 sakura roll - 4.5 sashimi deluxe - 3.5 left - happy-full bill - $60 incl tip EXPERIENCE: In short, I think the sushi here is good (but still lengths short of 'great'). We started with tuna & salmon nigiri - both were excellent, which prompted us to order the sashimi deluxe. For some reason, the tuna from the deluxe wasn't quite as good as the tuna over nigiri... too bad I wasn't paying attention to the chef... Besides the tuna, most of the other sashimi were fresh, and some (like salmon) melts in your mouth. We also ordered the sakura roll, a beautiful dish accompanied with sliced cucumber & kiwi. Honestly we went in with lower expectations, and came out happy knowing that we won't have to wait until school-breaks to eat sushi in Cali. This place is definitely good enough to return, and certain worth your time checking out.
(4)Jane S.
There are quite a few sushi restaurants in the area but this restaurant has the freshest sashimi. If you like raw fish, I strongly suggest the sashimi deluxe for dinner or the sashimi special for lunch. You will not regret it!
(4)Matt And Dara M.
Cozy little Japanese restaurant in Downtown Westmont. Food is delicious especially the teriyaki. I had the beef which was cooked perfectly to a medium well. The only drawback was we forgot to ask for a spoon to scoop the last bits of the teriyaki sauce.
(5)Jenny T.
One of the first things I wanted to do after signing up for Yelp! is to write a review for Yokohama Restaurant in Westmont, IL. I have been a regular at Yokohama since the age of 12. And, as an adult, who visits at least 7-8 times a month, Yokohama is a regular for me and my best friend. This is one place where we can always go for a superb Japanese dinner without having to drive 30 minutes out of our way. We often meet at Yokohama for their authentic Japanese appetizers, their fresh fish, quaint atmosphere, delightful services and for their delicious traditional Japanese cuisine. I assure you, if you want traditional Japanese rather than "trendy Japanese", this is the IT place. Now, keep in mind, this is a small "mom & pop" restaurant, just like it is in Japan. This is, by all means, not meant to be a trendy restaurant. And so, don't be disappointed if the interior does not look anything close to Japonais in Downtown Chicago. My recommendations would be to try out some appetizers, maybe a few maki rolls as a group and then get your own dinner. Few of the unique items that you can't try anywhere else and are excellent at Yokohama Restaurant are: Spicy Squid or Shrimp Ika Shouyaki (grilled squid) Softshell Crab Appetizer (not your typical cooking style) Chicken Teriyaki (the tastiest in the whole entire Chicago) Marinated Salmon (a unique call...fyi, "raw onion" is on the plate...it's really good with it, I just hope you're not hesitant about trying it!) Dynamite Roll (with Scallop! The BEST!) Westmont Roll (the BIGGEST California Roll and so little in rice and tons of fresh fillings) Bento Boxes - if you don't know what to get, this is IT! *Please yell at me if I steer you the wrong way! Happy Eating!
(5)Holly K.
Best sushi around, by far. I'm not willing to drive all the way into the city for good sushi very often but Yokohoma's is a hidden gem in the burbs. They have wonderful (and cheap) lunch specials daily. Try the Bento Special, it is my favorite. Their gyoza and sushi is wonderful and fresh. Give this place a try, you won't be disappointed. However if planning a large group outing or date, be sure to make a reservation on the weekend.
(5)Allan M.
A Japanese friend turned me onto this restaurant and it's one of my favorites. Easy to overlook driving by, you will want to stop by. The staff have always been very attentive but the food is out of this world. I have to agree with one of the other reviewers, the bento lunch specials are a great deal. That being said, to date, the Golden Ocean roll is probably my favorite. Personally I am not a fan of hot and spicy foods but this is worth it! One note, the spiciness does very depending on which chef is preparing it. If you like it hot, get it when the older gentlemen is behind the counter, if not, wait till the middle aged one is there. At this point I love this dish no matter which one prepared it. :-)
(5)Bill W.
I am a regular eater at Yokohma and it is really my favorite Japanese restaurant in the suburbs. Other places might be bigger, have better atmosphere, or have fancier sushi. But Yokohama beats them with the right combination of good sushi and Japanese entrees, along with a friendly and attentive staff. I've been going there for years, and will continue to do so. The bento lunch special is one of the best deals in the suburbs.
(5)Angie K.
Service was very attentive. I went on a slow Monday night and felt bad for the two sushi chefs standing at attention and trying not to make eye contact. I sat at the sushi bar and of course, had to put them to work! The freshly chopped spicy tuna hand roll was spread throughout, not like other hand rolls where the fish is at the top and rice is at the bottom. The tuna tataki, while not the amazing spicy, salty, sesamey goodness I have had at other restaurants, is beautifully seared and served with a flavorful dipping sauce. If you like dynamite rolls, order the Golden Ocean roll. It's a california roll topped with broiled squid, octopus and fish in a spicy cream sauce. Considering it was that "just one more roll" I ordered at the end to top off the evening, it was way too much food. It's almost a meal in itself. Be careful, the spicy cream sauce is a bit heavy and I had to un-button the top button of my jeans halfway through it. I also ordered a couple appetizers (yes, it was a night of gluttony). The pan fried squid rings were a touch salty, but when paired with a bowl of rice, perfectly good to eat together. The sauteed scallops were tender and melt in your mouth. I should have stopped there but went for just one more roll (see Golden Ocean comments above). Yokohama is a bit on the pricey side. However the wide variety of authentic Japanese appetizers and sushi more than make up for it.

I have been going here since highschool and now that I am about to finish grad school it is about time that I write a brief review for this place. One of my friends from highschool first introduced me to this place and so far I haven't found a sushi place out in the suburbs that rivals its quality and taste. Fish always taste somehow more fresh than some of the other places I have been to and you really have to go either downtown or to the lincoln park area to find sushi that rivals this place in deliciousness. Also, try the bento box or some of their other lunch specials if you are strapped for cash. Finally, don't let the small size of this restaurant beguile to its inner quality. If you happen to be out in the hinsdale / westmont area, it's hard to think of a better place to get good sushi.

Yokohama is a better than average sushi bar and one of my favorite places to eat Japanese food in the Western burbs. There are a plethora of sushi outlets these days, and most miss the mark by a wide margin. Yokohama is a solid performer and has been around a while turning out delicious sushi items. I recommend sticking with the sushi and sashimi, as I find the cooked menu items to be just okay and sometimes disappointing. The fish however is pristine and fresh and plentiful, and the itamae-san here know what they're doing. Truth be told, this is really more of a 3.5 star place, but as we can't give 1/2 stars, four stars is closest to the actual rating. Nothing spectacular here but it beats the average.

I was actually hesitant to go inside, it's right next to the railroad tracks and looks a little blah. But, I kept seeing people go inside...and I'm glad we tried it. I'm not a huge sushi fanatic, but wanted to try something different. We had the edamame, which was good and ordered a little variety of sushi. Everything was super fresh and I enjoyed it all. Would go back again...

Plain and simple. Very good sushi. I like the simplicity of the menu and they offer some very nice non sushi Japanese dishes that I look forward to trying. Service is fast and attentive. Look forward to returning!

This is an excellent, quiet Japanese restaurant, perfect for a late lunch Bento box. There is quite a variety of Bento, Udon and even Soba on the menu. The sushi is good quality and great, given the location.

Have dined at Yokohama many times and have never been disappointed. Highly recommended for friendly service and delightful food.

This is probably my favorite sushi place in the western suburbs. I used to come here all the time with my family when I lived in Westmont many years ago. I remember how friendly the owner was whenever we came here. He always greeted us when we were here and he had an adorable little son that would be at the restaurant sometimes. Service is great and prices are decent. But the sushi here is awesome and it is definitely worth coming back for!

Awesome, authentic sushi spot in the unlikeliest of places. Arguably the best sushi in the Southwest suburbs of Chicago.

Impeccable service(friendly, professional, happy to explain a dish), fresh and excellent quality, wonderful and careful blending of ingredients that win over the palate and the eye. Don't let the dreary storefront looks of the place fool you. You will definitely miss a diamond if you take a pass. We visited on a c-c-cold Saturday night and the place was bustling. Gomai (delicate and flavorful, perfect amount of seasoning), spicy tuna hand roll (freshly mixed as we saw from our table and served by our attentive waitress immediately after it was formed), TNT roll (beautiful mix of spices, tuna andhamachi that were perfect from beginning to end with a warm finish without being overpowering), Japanese snow crab roll (sprinkled with fried tempura batter and so nicely prepared they melted in my mouth), vegetable and shrimp tempura (served, again by our wonderfully attentive waitress piping hot, crunchy and bursting with flavor), hamachi pieces (wonderfully chilled and artfully cut), tender unagi pieces (still warm).

Best sushi and sashimi in the greater Chicagoland area - family run business in a strip mall setting. Don't be fooled by the cover - this book is well worth reading...

Awesome sushi. I am kicking myself for not coming here sooner. My fiance and I now live in Downers Grove and normally just pick up sushi to go on our way home from a grocery store. But we finally came this past Saturday. No reservation and we were promptly sat near the sushi bar. Such a cute little restaurant. For $70 including a 20% tip, we each had a beer, split a salad, had 5 rolls (the hybrid rocks, and so does the Yokohama Original), and they serve you half an orange to finish the meal. It was fantastic, and we are planning to go back soon.

Best sushi I've had outside of Japan. The cuts are big and fresh and the service is always helpful, never overbearing. The place is just small enough that even when packed, it's not too loud to have a good conversation. My partner and I have spent a great many date nights here. It's always the place we think of when we want to treat ourselves!

Sake it to me baby, yeah! This is where I popped my....well, sushi cherry, waaaay back in high school. A few friends DRAGGED me there to eat "raw fish". Well, I dragged them back a week later. I was converted. Very friendly service, I think I've had the same waitress every time I've been there (she had a ponytail coming out of the side of her head, 80s style). I actually left a pair of sunglasses there the night before I moved to college, I called them, and they were nice enough to hold them for a few days until my friend picked them up. And of course the sushi is always delicious and very fresh. I highly recommend this place in the suburbs over many in the area. It's never failed as a great meal and great experience.

Good quality sushi. The service is wonderful. You can pick up a lunch box and go for a picnic. Free parking out front.

I have only ordered carry-out from this restaurant, so I'm not so sure about their service. I can tell you that the sushi is okay, nothing that screams extraordinary. Even though I called at least 30 minutes in advance, I did have to wait an additional 15 minutes when I arrived. Overall- Cleanliness: A Food: B Prices: B Service: C --------------------- Grade- B

the service was wonderful.. truly. i loved that they brought out hot towels to freshen up before the meal. i enjoyed the dragon roll. however once they brought out the spider roll i felt like it was completely much to large. it was difficult to get a grasp on it and wasn't at all what i was expecting (giving this review 3 stars) but i'll throw in an extra star for the bento box i had once during lunch. yummm :) do go here, just be picky about what you choose.

This used to be my favorite sushi place in this area. I just had lunch and was disappointed. My sushi lunch only had one piece of fish(tuna) everything else was non-fish. The one maguro was fine. My friends rolls were the same. Only one roll had raw fish.

They were very attentive and courteous. We stopped by there on a whim because we had a small event later in the evening and needed something to tide us over. It's rare to find a Japanese restaurant with Japanese servers still and it was a pleasure to eat there. They never rushed us even though we only ordered a few rolls. I will say that the rolls are a bit smaller than I am used to but the fish was extremely fresh and they serve white ginger which is always a bonus in my book!
(4)Amanda K.
Sushi was fresh and reasonably priced. The service was great! Our server was so nice and was very on the ball. I also loved the hot towel when you first get there. A friend and I split a couple different maki rolls including the Philadelphia Roll and one with Lobster and BBQ sauce. I don't remember the name of it but it was probably my favorite. Overall it was a nice experience and would recommend checking out.

Service. Presentation. Quality. Maybe the most fundamental in an excellent dining experience, Yokohama Japanese Restaurant in Westmont ranks as the highest in all three -- their staff are attentive, prompt, and extremely courteous and both the quality and presentation of their food is nearly perfect. I doubt I'll find a better Japanese restaurant in the western suburbs. I have found that the somewhat smaller and maybe lesser known places can be real gems. And Yokohama is definitely one of them!

we ordered a teriyaki chicken and some avocado/eel roll. both were pretty good and the portions were good, but for some reason they only give you a tiny amount of rice. the staff was very nice

I've tried a lot of sushi joints here and across the country. In the Chicago area, this is by far my favorite. Forget Momotaro, forget Mimi's, forget Ra, if you're in the western burbs this is the place to go.

Inferior in every way. Horrible service, Spicy tuna not spicy and made up of the old tuna (which is often the case but if done right should not be noticeable). Lots of regulars and we noticed their sushi (as opposed to the rolls) looked better than ours - if they were serving us the leftover shame on them. For one they lost a family that eats in Japaese restauarants a lot and is nearb,y and it's pretty slimy business practice. If it's not good enough for regulars don't serve to non-regulars. Miso ok, tempura ok, sushi sub par - no udon or Soba which I think is a shame. Had to beg to get tea, to get refills and even to take our order. May have just been a bad day ... but it was not good. Obviously we will not be back.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this gem. I eat sushi about 4 times a week and have tried everywhere in the city and most burbs. I live in the area and decided to give it another try since I hadn't been there since high school. I must say, my husband was skeptical because the exterior is quite misleading. The food is phenomenal though! Service is great as well. You know you're at the best place in town when half of the clientele is Asian. The tuna is out of this world, the Agedashi tofu is like crack, the Hamachi Jalapeno beats Nobu, and the Boston Roll is delish. I could go on for days....The staff knows us very well, probably for the 3 plus visits from us each week. If they only carried Pinot Grigio my life would be complete!

Great place in the suburbs for Sushi, however on occasion the people who run the place have been just plain rude, my friend had hot boiling tea spilled on her by the waitress and was not offered anything to make up for it (i.e. a free roll or free desert etc.) I suspect a cultural difference perhaps, even though the people who run this joint have been in the US for a while, -1 star just for not acclimatizing to US service culture.

One of the best sushi places I have been to -- ever. The sushi is always fresh and the service is great. Their unagi roll is one of the best. If you're ever in Westmont, go here!
(5)Zach T.
A complete shocker. Tucked away in a strip mall at Cass and the tracks in Westmont, this no-frills place serves Dynamite sushi and Japanese food. They actually have a Westmont roll. Aside from the Sushi, the tempura and edamame are great. Don't forget to add an Asahi!

This place use to be much better years ago. I can remember back in the early to mid ninties this place was always packed and for good reason. Unfortunatley I think they have a new owner. The food is good but no where like it use to be. Stay away from the california rolls. The sushi presentation isn't great but it is of good taste and the sushi bar staff are very friendly and accomidating. Ummm...I wouldn't say I recomend it, but if you told me you were going there I would not advise you against it.

Best quality sushi in the area. Excellent miso soup and noodle salad starters. The servers have always been friendly. I've been dozens of timse and once or twice when they were busy it was a little slow - but for a small place that's to be expected. It turned out to be worth the wait. Good green tea and a delicious orange at the end of every meal.

All around really great Japanese food. Their appetizer selection is very impressive and their sushi is fresh. The white tuna is awesome! I go here at least 3 times a month and I still look forward to eating here each and every time! Definitely a must try!
