Since I was a kid this has been my favorite place to go to for ice cream. I have to make a stop here when I come from Chicago to visit family. No one comes close to the way sundaes are made here. Whether it's a small cone or sundae I am a huge fan.

It's ok. Nothing amazing about it really. I wanted ice cream and i went here and got some. Pretty cut and dry. The service was decent, the girl was nice enough. I wanted strawberry because it was the ice cream of the day and they were out of it. My cone started to drip from the bottom because the bottom tip was broken. I am an ice cream fanatic so i was excited to go, and while they certainly did not disappoint me by any means i wasn't exactly thrilled with the experience either. It was supposed to have a classic 60s feel, the place was clean but the decorations fell short.

Omg I love this place I've been coming here since I was two! My favorite item is the grape slushy and pizza puff. Also the twist cone is heaven. They have a drive-through so it's very easy to get the food. Thanks for being a Waukegan GEM!

Compared to other ice cream shops, and fast food, it's quite steep in price and the quality really sucks. Coming from living in Wisconsin for a good chunk of my life, this doesn't even come close to how good ice cream can be. This is way too sugary, way too watered down in taste. The other options aren't to rave about either, pretty much stuff you and I can make at home. Half of the options I have ordered being with family and friends, i've ended up discovering within the ingredients chunks of sweets that one can get at your local grocery store. Not impressed at all...but hey, there's not many options in "good ol' walk-town" in regards to ice cream. I'll give em another star simply for their retro appearance, but the place has seen better days.

Well I am new to the area and wanted to find a nice "Greasy Spoon" restaurant to try since I'm from Chicago and we have some pretty good ones there...Well I searched Yelp of course and came across Shirl's Drive In. The reviews seemed pretty good so my hubby and I decided to try it. Well I ordered an Italian Beef w/Mozzarella Cheese dipped..Fries, Reuben and we tried the Buffalo Wings. Everything was Delicious!! The man who helped us gave great suggestions and was very friendly. We sat in and was definitely satisfied. The place had an old restaurant feel like Happy Days but definitely Fresh and it hit the spot. Thank you to the employee who showed great customer service and we will definitely visit again..Thanks to the Yelpers for your great feedback and encouraged us to try them..Gotta go back to try the icecream since I had no room in my belly for drinks or Dessert! YUMMY!! Kim D. Waukegan, IL

I've been going to this place since I was little. I have fond memories or getting chocolate dipped soft serve, turtle sundaes, banana boats, and of course my favorite fall treat, pumpkin ice cream. You pretty much cannot go wrong with any of the ice cream related treats from this place. The soft serve is always extremely delicious. The food is pretty great too, waffle fries and a hot dog are definitely the way to go! Or the pizza puff for sure! I also absolutely love the onion rings. Only complaints I really have is that at times the service is awful. I'm not surprised, it usually appears to be teenagers working their and they often seem distracted by friends who are stopping by to get treats or say hello. And the it can seem a bit pricey as well.

We've lived less than a mile from here for a whole year, and just tried it yesterday. I got a turkey sandwich, hubby got some sort of BBQ burger. Both were pretty tasty, although I could have made my own sandwich at home. (I'll try something more exciting next time, since my husband ordered the sandwich as a "surprise" haha.) We also got a hot fudge milkshake and a caramel milkshake. They were fantastic! My favorite part was the french fries--so good! They are perfectly seasoned, not too soggy, not too crunchy.

Shirl's has a number of locations around the area and they have been for quite some time. They offer typical greasy spoon fare along with soft serve ice cream. The food is usually pretty good and a step above most fast food fare. I am not much of an ice cream person but everyone I know really likes Shirl's ice cream and other desserts. Me I like the slushy as it will give me the quickest brain freeze of any drink I know, if that is your thing. They usually offer some coupons or discounts in the local papers for those on the look-out.

I used to go to the Shirl's on Grand Avenue a lot when I was young. I was sad to find that it closed down! At least this one is still open. They have great ice cream treats and shakes. I seem to remember them having a monster-sized shake that me and my friend used to share. Their cheese fries are YUM. Shirl's is a great place to go with the family, especially on a hot summer night.

Boy, do I have fond memories of Shirl's Drive-In from when I was a youngster. Our family favorites include: the ice cream shakes (caramel is awesome!), pizza puffs, and cheese fries. But, you really can't go wrong since they make everything to order. Best place to go on a hot summer evening!

I've been coming here since it opened. I always loved coming with my dad after swim practice even in the winter and I always thought it was so cute that he'd get mini ice cream cones for the dogs. I still stop by when I'm visiting the parents. I like the chicken sandwich and the burgers. They're much less greasy than chain fast food and might actually be made of meat... WHOA. I love the cheese fries. Love them. For desserts I usually go with the banana sundae or pineapple or the blueberry shake. Mmmmm. A little pricey for fast food but it's good quality.

Hello Shirls?!?!?!? who doesn't know this place? on hot summer days, walking with a couple of your friends, and getting a dipped cone or the tiny xs cones. Priceless. Of course over the years they lost the Washington st. location, but two locations still exist. I don't know what they put in that soft serve, but its addicting. I remember stopping in the dead of winter for a polar blast or a shake. I recommend the pizza pockets, they are tasty, not so good for the diet, though!

Some of the best soft serve ice cream I've ever had....some really good fast food too. The other good thing is that the food is fresh cause they cook it while you wait. My favorite is the pizza puffs and fries...then top that off with a large soft serve half & half cone and you are good to go!

Come here for great ice cream and shakes. Great types of blizzards, ice cream drinks and cones. They also have fast meals like hamburgers, hot dogs and even fish and chili. Meat is cooked to order. Great drive-in
