Who ranked this place before has never had bbq before or I just got the worst piece of pork they've ever served! I've had bbq all over the world....and this is the WORST. Even IN has better. Big Ed's is 100xs better. I heard rave reviews of this place so I drove here for lunch with several other people. We got the pork shoulder sandwich and NOTHING was good. The white plain bread......you can ONLY do that if your bbq is AWESOME and your sauce is perfect. The pork was HORRIBLE. Too much fat in it, hard to eat....and the sauce was supposed to be "spicy" and I barely tasted anything. It was very disappointing. I was really looking forward to some good bbq. If you live in the area.....go to Big Eds. Maybe their "rib tips" are better here, as the reviews say? But at least NEVER eat their pork shoulder unless you like fat, gristle, and no flavor.

The new Lake Bluff location better get it's act together, or eight months of renovation is going to go down in flames. On a recent night with my family, we entered the restaurant to find the carry out part of the place sits right in the the main eating room, so while your trying to eat, people are starring at you. They had no ice, cups, and the bar wasn't open yet, but they said they had a liquor license, and they didn't take credit cards because the supposed manager didn't know how to set up the machine. The food arrived finally, think it was about 15 minute's catfish was probably the best I have ever eaten...rib tips were sent back because they were dried out and very small in size...the ribs themselves were good, but obviously had been "around" to long in whatever holding area they use...hush puppies would be great if they were bigger in size and they had some butter to put on them...fries were the normal fries, nothing special...oh, the shrimp were way over breaded and probably not breaded in house..a very thick batter on them...service was friendly...a little pricey. Over 60 dollars for 2 adults and 2 kids...with no beer, wine, etc...just canned soda. They need to fix the dining room situation ASAP, plus the walls have been opened up thru to the bar area, so whenever that opens your going to be hearing the noise from there carry over to the dining room along with those people starring at you. It was obvious the owners have never had a sit down place, just carry out, so that follows why the place is set up wrong. TV's in the bar area are very small. Whatever family memeber owns this place, better start coming in and correctly some of the issues, especially food quality.

Just their rib sauce with white bread alone - fuhgetaboutit!!

Rib tips & fries were good enough. Loved the Cole slaw.

Where's that sauce. ?? It's got to the point where I have to buy extra sauce for my tips ? What's up Hillary's? It's got good ribs but they skimping on the sauce. Only complaint I never had anything but ribs from them so I can't chime in on anything else they have . Good ribs =] Wear a bib . I haven't ate Hillarys and not dropped that sauce on my shirt

The food is excellent and best ribs tips I ever had I would not listen to other reviews food is excellent and there is a new owner so food is better then ever before

I really wanted to like Hillery's more, some of my outlaws here rave about it. But we made several mistakes it seems, the worst one going late on a Sunday Afternoon when they were out of several items, and not leaving then. The Rib Tips we got were tired, dry and sparse. They shouldn't have been sold. We did like the sauce, but who doesn't like burnt sugar and smoke?

Good luck finding better rib tips...you wont, at least not around Lake County. The pork shoulder is excellent. Everything is pretty good. These guys have been at it along time and it shows. I miss places like this in Colorado, you cant find grub quite like Hillerys.

This new location is not long for this world if they don't get their act together. The interior looks like it used to be an auto repair shop. Super bright lighting, drap carpet, and no idea on how to run a restaurant. Arrived at 6:00 pm on a Saturday night and they were already out of brisket and four other sides. Hostess/cashier/server took my order on a post-it note. Waited until 6:45 in a waiting area filled with people with a WTF look on their faces, i.e. how long does it %$^&ing take to put ribs in a box? Ribs weren't too bad - a really sour vinegary sauce and lots of chili powder. Pork shoulder was a disaster. Fries were undercooked and the 2 ounces of cole slaw was super runny. Net, what can go wrong when a guy with a BBQ smoker and a dream decides he can operate a restaurant? A LOT!

Excellent ribs and generous portions. The staff is pretty friendly.

OK... if you're looking for a five-star, white (or black) tablecloth dining experience, keep heading toward Chicago. However, if you're wanting some some BBQ, like dad and mom created in the back yard...STOP HERE! This place is my NEW favorite go-to picnic pad for comfort food! I've been three times this week. A great value for down home portions. No rolls, just slices of bread and no greens (my personal pet peeve), but the BBQ sauce (medium for me, thank you) is addictive. The staff is friendly and in constant motion because of the need to fill orders for all the customers wanting their BBQ! Mostly a to-go, stand alone joint, you can sit at the outside picnic table out front. Personally, I think Hillary's is missing out on offering potato salad, collard greens or other "vegetable" sides, but I'll keep coming back from western Lake County for my BBQ fix!

No no no....terrible is an understatement. After being stationed in the south we are a bit spoiled w/ BBQ...this wasn't even close. A coworker suggested it, I'll admit, it smelled good, but it ended there. The BBQ chicken was fried then doused in sauce! What in the world?! The ribs, well let's just say I'm popping tums like crazy. No Bueno.

It's been about a decade since I was last here! I was driving by today and thought why not? I stopped to get some rib tips for myself and a co worker and we just love hillery's!! My only complaint is that there wasn't enough sauce :( Glad I stopped in! But next time I will be asking for extra sauce!!

Nope, not good! This was the chewiest meat, no exaggeration! We ordered a variety, rib tips, slab of pork ribs, brisket and fried catfish. My husband said the fried fish was tasty, I cannot attest to that. The meat was disappointing, I heard great things about this place too and they had a lot of business. I was hoping it was better. No returning on this one.

Been coming here for 20 years and recently things have changed. Customer service has gone down the drain quality and quantity is going down hill. Orders are wrong and they never answer the phone. Yelling at the customers and intimation is the way they act now. WHERE IS THE SAUCE!!!!!!!! MAIN CONCERN FROM LOTS OF CUSTOMERS.

Great bbq. Must try the ribs. Been going in for several years! Do yourself a favor and visit
(4)Colleen D.
Very good ribs!! Best place to order ribs than anywhere else. Very nice people working there.

This place was SO, SO, SO promising. For starters, they were out of hush puppies, bummer. And I was there at 12 pm on a Sunday? It wasn't late at night or anything.. I got their brisket.. it was okay. Sorta dry, needed a lot of sauce to choke it down. Crinkle cuts: hard to mess up, they were cool. Vibe/service/atmosphere: you walk in and its so chill and old school. Loved it. Maybe I just ordered the wrong thing?? Definitely would try it again!
(3)Flor R.
Always on point!!! The tips are amazing and the catfish is also another one of my favoritez. I've been here many many times growing up and we love it. The smell around sunset and Lewis will just attract you right in!!
(5)Odranre B.
best damn rib tips i ever experienced - been eating their ribs since they transformed their first joint inside the garage of their home in north chicago. the place was in "not so great neighborhood" and the place (well, a garage) lined with industrial drums cut in half as grills, and the cook or grill master called customers sir/mam. everyone deserves chances so i will occasionally re-visit establishments that did not get favorable reviews from me in hope that they have addressed the issues and will revise my views accordingly

In one word.... Really good with rice

The food here reminds me of the days when I used to go into the middle of Cabrini Green Projects at midnight after work back in the 90's to a little place (can't remember the name) that had the best rib tips ever. The ribs here are simple a lost art and very hard to find. This is called "old school" BBQ and they are so good, I dream about them. You can taste the smokiness which for me I like but the one thing I love the most is the SAUCE. It is vinegar based and tangy yet sweet. I usually get the 'hot' but wish it could be a little bit spicier. They have Crinkle Fries and have to say are awesome. I now live in a different State and can't find a rib joint that even comes close. So anytime I come back to Chicago, I make the effort to get some.

Listen well and listen all.Hillarys is good, but big eds is the best.the ribs and fries meal should fill any giant of the late 18th century
(4)Jay R.
When I ordered, the male employee was rude on the phone, pick it up, got the wrong order, and the ribs were disgusting!! I asked for a half of slab and the meat was hard to chew. It was leather with BBQ sauce.

I want to give Hillery's 5 stars, but I just can't do that .....truth is, I'm more nostalgic about the family memories Hillery's has created, rather than good food. It's a staple in the community, with some pretty loyal customers. The sauce is great! It's unique and you'll never taste anything like it....but the quality of the meat they use needs some improvement. I also like the fries. Eat, Live, Love
(2)Maricela H.
Amazing rib tips and excellent customer service!!!
(5)Russ M.
truly lame at the lake bluff location. bland decor, the brisket was tough and they don't take credit cards. sauce is mildly interesting and is a little like a harissa. carry out waiting area is essentially same as eat in so you have all these hungry people staring at you while you eat. $30 for 2 people seemed like a lot.

Definitley an aquired taste, but once you get it, yer hooked. Unlike any other sauce you've ever had. The vinegar may throw off most Chicagoan's, who are used to a sweeter sauce. Get the rib tips, hands down. The outside is nicely smoked and charred, with a fatty inside that adds so much porkiness flavor. Been going here for 15 years and I still will make the 50 mile drive for a platter of tips. Mild or hot, you will enjoy. For serious BBQ rib tip fans only. Not for your Famous Dave's crowd!
