I love that places like this exist in Springfield! Went for dinner (which they don't serve every night and you should definitely make a reservation for) with my mom, cousin and aunts and had such an enjoyable dinner. It's tiny in here and the menus are all on chalkboards on the walls, which is cool, except that you can't see them from every table/seat so one of us got up and took a picture of the boards so we could better ponder the options. The dinner menu changes daily, which is awesome, but probably not great for the super picky. They also have lots of drinks to pick from, but I was disappointed in the size of my specialty cocktail. It was tiny. Which I don't mind if I'm at a place known for their specialty cocktails and I expect small [strong] drinks, but this was a bit extreme. For dinner I had the butternut squash lasagna and it was heavenly. Keep in mind it was cold out when we were there, and this was the perfect comfort food. I ate the whole piece, which was pushing the limits of my stomach capacity, but I just couldn't stop. Our server was stretched a bit thin and was sometimes hard to pin down (I guess they were short staffed that night), which was ok since we weren't in a rush, but still not ideal. Regardless, it's a great little spot and a good find for trips back to the 'field.

Would never have found this place on my own but loved it. Small tapas of good food and great drinks. Had Rosy Cheeks to drink (loved it) and a bit of this and that.

where do I start? decor is nice, very simple yet welcoming. Table setting is pristine, water was served in promptly, they leave you a liter at the table so that you can refill your own, smart move since the place is small and I only saw two servers. Instead of bread, you get a plate of pears. delicious. FOod.. I ordered the fish tacos, the fish was cooked perfectly.. the salsa (mango) paired really well with the Cod. The tortillas, a little dissapointed, they were a bit cold and not fresh.. making tortillas is super easy, other than that.. all was excellent. Great service, great food, great place. Limited parking but doable. Kudos to La Calia

Great restaurant close to Historic sites. Small, quiet and excellent food. Was there with three friends. We all ordered different specials and all were very Good, however, we voted the braised brisket the best!

Second time around and another good dinner. Weather was wonderful so we sat outside this time. Beef brisket was fork tender and salmon was cooked perfectly. Bread and pesto with tomato basil salad was delicious. Thanks for another great dinner.

Had a vary tasty lunch. Had a salmon ciabatta sandwich with mango salsa. Husband had carnitas tacos with rice and black beans. A slice of delicious home made key lime pie finished our experience here. Would definitely come back.

I went with my wife and 2-yr old daughter for lunch on a Friday. The food was very good. It wasn't mind-blowing, but it was thoroughly enjoyable. We had the fish tacos, the baked potato with carnitas, and a brownie and ice cream for dessert. The portions looked small, but they were actually quite filling. For the price I would give the food at La Calia 5 stars. Unfortunately the service was terrible. Our waitress, Sheryl, was rude and slow, despite making a big show of looking busy. The restaurant is small. There are just 10 tables (some seat 2 and others 4) and a 4-seat bar. This is covered by two waitresses. In other words, it is not understaffed. Yet there is Sheryl, speedwalking back and forth across the place as if she can't handle the "crowd." First she tried to rush us through our order. When I asked if the barbacoa was fatty or lean she responded shortly "I don't know, I haven't had it." Really? It's a simple, objective question, and you don't have to have eaten the dish to answer it. If she isn't going to be passingly familiar with the food, she should have at least offered to find out when asked, instead of acting like I was being unreasonable to even ask. Then as soon as we had named two dishes she took off, without waiting to hear what else we wanted. What we wanted was a separate plate for our 2-year old so that she could eat too. Instead we had to wait and ask for it as Sheryl was bringing our dishes. This happened again when we ordered dessert. Once again she ran off immediately after we named our dishes without giving us a chance to ask for an extra plate. We called after her, but she was gone. When she delivered the dessert we asked for the plate, and her response was a curt "it'll be a while." Apparently that meant "never" because we finished the dessert, and she brought our check, and we never saw the extra plate. Come on. It should be common sense to ask if we want to order anything for the child. And when we already asked for an extra plate for our meal, she shouldn't even need to ask about it again for dessert--let alone wait for us to ask and then not even bring it. This explains why she is so "busy" when she only has five tables to wait on. She doesn't have any common sense, and instead of spending 10 seconds to make sure of what she needs, she will instead make two or three trips. And when she does show up, she is scatterbrained and rude. She is really a terrible waitress. I know the standard defenses. "People have bad days." I get that people have bad days, but this isn't "bad day" stuff; it's really really basic. "2-year olds are a waitress's worst nightmare." Actually, ours was not at all. She was quiet and neat and well-behaved. Yes, that's possible. Read the book "French Kids Eat Everything" if you don't believe me. This had nothing to do with our kid. For what it's worth, the other waitress seemed much better. She was relaxed and efficient. Meanwhile Sheryl really does her best to make you feel like being there is an imposition to her.

I'm slightly mixed on this place. Let me begin this review by stating the food is FAN-FREAKING-TASTIC. Tried almost everything on the menu, and it's all just superb. The negatives here, however, begin to challenge the quality of the food. The place is tiny.. seats maybe 20 people. So forget about going during normal busy hours. And it can be uncomfortable to eat there when there is people there. The service also is suspect. I've been there before when it's taken nearly an hour to get served, which doesn't fly when I'm there for a lunch break. One of the servers there also doesn't seem real friendly. But, like I said, the food has kept me coming back. Great food.

I've eaten lunch here twice. Love. Please visit soon to keep gems like this in Springfield. I enjoyed a fabulous lunch with a work friend on a Friday. The server was honest about a substitution and made a great suggestion. I tried the scallop tacos. They were fantastic. Oh, and Catpower was the background music. Yum

After spending the day at the State Fair we stopped in on a whim for dinner. What a fantastic surprise this was! Service was spot on... had better service at a restaurant run by only 2 people than I have at larger, big city restaurants. Not only was the server attentive, but the chef stopped by as well. When the food came, OH MY GOODNESS... my boyfriend had the smoked pork chop and could not stop raving about the flavor, I had the paella (special) and it was filled with amazing flavor. By far the most flavorful meal we have ever had! The restaurant has only been there since February and we are hoping that it makes it. If you are in the Springfield area, we highly recommend stopping by for an amazing meal with amazing service.

Service was fine. Food was good - I had the tacos, not spicy at all, but still tasty, just good, but not exciting. Price was good. I would go back again to try other items on the menu.

I enjoy going to locally owned restaurants, and this is one of the best I've visited. The menu features creative twists on familiar dishes. The chocolate mouse with chipotle pepper will spice up my dreams for weeks. Not to be missed.

We really enjoyed this dinner. Local-intensive; local produce, local meats - all very tasty. Well-curated craft beer choices - extra points for having Ballast Point beers. A very enjoyable dinner, comparable to many that we eat in Chicago and at a much nicer price point.

We recently dined at La Calia with a very large party. While the restaurant is not particularly well-equipped for serving so many people at once, the service was still good and all the food was excellent. Leah, the owner, was very accommodating for our large party and our server, Rachel, was very friendly and quick to anticipate our needs. I had the red pepper quesadilla, which I loved. I also very much appreciate that unlike other restaurants in downtown Springfield, they're open for dinner. Hopefully La Calia will help liven up downtown's night and evening scenes!

Group of 8 dropped in about 1 p.m.on a busy Saturday downtown after guide at Abe's Museum recommended it as something different. He mentioned whiskey pie, which server had never heard of. Our group was pleased with lunch menu variety and satisfied with quantity and quality.

Super cute, unique atmosphere. Quiet but with great music playing. Came in for lunch and our waitress was great. Food was fantastic and a welcome change from Springfield cuisine. Glad to have a great new restaurant in our downtown eats rotation! When we got the tacos I was scared I would still be hungry after but I finished the plate and was full! Perfect size. Decent prices! Will definitely return again.

The Reuben Sandwich is one of the best things in Springfield to eat. So juicy and delicious. Great service and cool decor.

LOVED this place. Had lunch here. NOTE...they only serve dinner Thursday-Saturday as of this posting. Had the black soup and salad with mango vinagarette. Fresh and healthy. Nice selection of brewed teas hot or iced and full bar with fantastic drinks like the Smirnoff Sorbet. My husband had the grilled scallop tacos. Yum. Great service, neat old building, close to the Old State Capitol we split the homemade strawberry ice cream and tried cinammon ice cream too. Tapas at night as well as steaks, ribs and seafood Highly recommend a visit.

Stopped by for dinner last night for the first time. Very welcoming and interesting resturant. Enjoyed appetizers, dinner, and desert. Kale salad was unusual, mahi mahi with vegetables and rice excellent. Homemade beet mint ice cream worth trying. Don't be afraid to ask for recommendations.

Great rotating menu with many made from scratch items. I have several friends that love this palce, and I would frequent it more if I were in the downtown area more often. The menu is small and changes often, so it might not have something for everyone all the time. That said, the items they do have are quite fantastic and very unique for Springfield.

Decided to try the place because it seemed like something different, which is a rarity in Springfield. The special was a Baked Potatoe with Salmon on top. It was tasty, different, nothing that blows you away but definetly something different. I also decided to try the scalllop tacos, absolutely amazing but $11 for 2 tacos (delicious) and some dry rice and beans. All in all, I will be back since I work in the area. Def worth a try, great service, unique menu, cute little restaraunt.

This place is a super cute addition to Springfield. I have no idea how I didnt find it earlier. They have a very eclectic menu which is, frankly, shocking to find here. We went in search of fish tacos, and boy did we find they. This is an excellent, fresh version with a delicious salsa. Excellent beer selection and their dinner special board looked amazing. Wish I could have eaten here every day in Springfield.

Yum. Pork carnitas tacos with locally sourced pork. Beautiful plate with 3 tacos and sides of rice & beans. Included two house made hot sauces with a little kick and some mango salsa. Mellow music, tablecloths and a nice wine, beer and hard cider (gluten free yeah) options. They had a brunch menu also available but I would order the taco anytime. Good vibe. Check this place out! It measures up to any small hip place in Atlanta! And the service was very good too.

Great little lunch in the middle of downtown Springfield. Walked in during lunch on a Wednesday and received a friendly greeting, was quickly briefed on the daily special along with a menu. Chopped Kale Salad - Nice little refreshing starter that sparked my tastebuds with a vinaigrette that had lingering tastes of sesame. Light and refreshing... Carnitas tacos - Small corn tortillas (how they should be) with pulled carnitas pork, topped with a cabbage slaw, onions and cilantro. A little dipper filled with mango relish, a side of black beans and some rice. These little suckers seemed small when it arrived, even though there was three of them. Surprisingly enough they filled my tummy up and I couldn't even get to dessert. As it arrived, the smell of citrus and cumin used to marinate the pork immediately hit my senses and I already knew this was going to be good. Was I right! Tacos were filled with plentiful meat and toppings... Make sure you get a little side cup of their hot sauce...definitely spikes it up and enhances the flavors.

I have visited La Calia three times in the past two weeks and each time has been a welcome pleasure. It's a small casual boutique restaurant with colorful chalk menus and specials adorning the walls. It gets packed during the business lunch hour so plan accordingly. There is a darn good reason why! Their food is cooked with the love of a chef at home and packed with the sophistication and flavors of a trained culinarian. They have reasonable prices and plate lunch specials during the week. The service is pleasant and know their menu inside and out. The Barbacoa sandwich is served on a warm Ciabatta bread and the meat is melt in your mouth delicious. The Corned Beef and Hash Special contained freshly grown purple potatoes and onions and was equally delicious with exactly the right texture. They serve Mexican Coke (with REAL sugar!!) in glass bottles there and also have their own homemade ice cream which I still haven't tried because I've devoured the main course so quickly. The saddest part of this review is that they are closing for a few weeks and won't open again until sometime in January 2014 due to vacation. My taste buds will be eagerly awaiting their return, and so should yours.

I'm in Springfield for work and decided to check Yelp for food places. The reviews for this restaurant led me completely astray...and made me feel like a food snob. The service was great. Our waitress was friendly and attentive. But the food was so disappointing. My coworker and I left feeling slightly hungry. I had the carnitas tacos which contained the driest pieces of pork ever. It lacked flavor as well. There was a mango salsa and what I think was homemade green salsa which were both good. The tacos came with rice and black beans. The rice was really dry too. My coworker had the lunch special which turned out to be fish tacos. We both imagined fried fish in the tacos...but it came out and was just pan fried (not battered) salmon. She did not like her dish either. I tried a bit of my boss's scallop taco. That was actually decent, but he only got two tacos in his entrée when my other coworker and I got three. Parking here is easy to find on the street. I'm not sure if the small lot adjacent to the restaurant is for customers or not.

La Calia? More like La Hell-hole. If I could give it zero stars I would. We had an unhelpful, rude and absent waitress and she messed up the order to top it off. I'd rather have the capital stayed in Vandalia or Kaskaskia

4 adults and 3 kids for lunch on a tourist Saturday at the Lincoln exhibits and this place was a unanimous hit! Fast service, amazingly huge and reasonably priced lunch options, and the food was fresh and local. Scallop tacos, the Reuben, and the chorizo and egg dishes were all knock out. A great find and one we would frequent often if we lived closer.

Our favorite restaurant when we visit Springfield! We always order the corn beef and hash and scrambled eggs with homemade chorizo... Their homemade ice cream is always yummy as well! Added bonus is supporting a local business!!!

Let me preface this with the fact that I'm from New Orleans and used to eating great food. Driving through Springfield and "Mexican" sounded good. There is nothing remotely Mexican except that they make some tacos and quesadillas. They also have tapas, ice cream, and entrees like blackened trout and pork chops, but don't serve Mexican staples like chips and salsa or margaritas. The special was a baked potato topped with carnitas, corned beef or veggies. I had it with corned beef and my boyfriend had it with carnitas. Bland is an understatement. There was absolutely zero flavor on a dry potato with unsauced meat. Even the one slice of cheese under the meat added no moisture or flavor. No amount of sour cream, guacamole, horseradish or hot sauce could make this dish better. It was dry to the point of being almost inedible. So in case you're wondering and thinking Mexican sounds good for lunch...La Casita isn't good and isn't Mexican in any way.

in a word.....excellent! busy, busy place, but the service is quick with two friendly women taking the orders. I ate there 2 days (lunch) while I was in town,,,, carnitas tacos with beans/rice one day, next fish tacos with kale salad (w/excellent dressing) the next. the homemade hot sauce is sweet with just enough heat. they make their own ice cream, and they have beer, wine and mixed drinks. small place located near Lincoln museum and a favorite of locals. try it and you'll see why! happy trails

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
