I was traveling with my family coming from STL to northern IL & we hit this area around lunchtime. We decided we didn't want a chain restaurant & we were looking for something like a truck stop. Since this was the only nonchain restaurant we saw we thought we'd give it a try. A quick look at yelp, scared me a little, but we we proceeded. Upon stepping inside I was again apprehensive (the prior comment about it not having been updated since the 70's was spot on). But here's the thing...the food was actually good. You can tell it's all fresh and made to order. My son had the kid's mac & cheese and it was clearly homemade. And kids can choose jello as a side, which has not been an option for 30 years! My club was quite good and I was surprised to find romaine vs. iceberg lettuce. All-in-all, I'd say if you are near this exit and you are looking for diner/comfort food, I'd give this place a try

Came here on way home for breakfast...it's a cute bright red house on the outside with old wood booths inside... I ordered Apple cream cheese pancakes with eggs and my wife had Texas toast egg sandwich. Waitress kept our drinks and coffee full however there were some issues.... First our food was waiting at the pass for at least 5 minutes and our waitress when by it twice and didn't deliver it to our table....someone else from the back brought it to us.....strike one.... Next both of our eggs and sausage patties tasted dry (microwaved)....strike two.... One bright light is the pancakes were fresh, filling, and were great!! Finally the ticket which we paid at the register didn't include the taxes....on our $16.00 bill there was an additional $5 in taxes! What! She explained that it's a "pre-cooked sugar tax" Hmmm...so what is made from scratch...strike three.... So much for trying something new....should have went across the street to Cracker Barrel....

Good onion rings and fresh chef salad. It was like stepping back in time, but the food was good.

Average food in a below-average restaurant. Last updated in 1974 seems about right. The only reason to go here is for privacy and to avoid the crowd at Cracker Barrel (just down the street). Food is edible people fuel - nothing more. Not sure how it stays in business but somehow it does. I hate to say it but skip this joint and head over to the Cracker Barrel in this area....

Hen House Family Restaurant appears to be a breakfast chain found around central Illinois. During a recent road trip it was morning, I was hungry and upon seeing a sign for Hen House at the nearest exit decided to head to the off ramp and visit. As I made my way to it the giant letters in the front of the building made it quite apparent which building housed the Hen House. After parking, snapping a picture of the outside and heading in I looked around a bit. They have postcards and other strange knick-knacks for sale in addition to their primary business of being a diner. I've never actually been in a Cracker Barrel but have been told they also have a store inside so perhaps it's similar. After being seated, I looked over the menu and discovered that the skillets that are so commonly found at nearly every breakfast joint in Chicagoland are nowhere to be found at this small eatery in our state capital. I eventually settled on steak, eggs and hash browns. Placed my order and waited for quite a while. I don't often stop in Springfield but it appeared the general customer base of frequent patrons remains similar to diners found in Chicagoland. Excluding myself, nearly everyone else patronizing this establishment was a senior citizen. In fact and as I looked around the Hen House it appeared many patrons were nearly old enough to have voted for Abraham Lincoln was a state representative here in Springfield. After a little over 20 minutes, my steak, eggs and hash browns were brought out. There wasn't much steak, there wasn't much egg and there wasn't much hash brown. The steak was well done, to the point of being a little on the tough side. The eggs were bland and a bit runny despite being scrambled. The hash browns were crisp, but greasy and not particularly tasty. Regret for spending time, money and my allowance of calories for breakfast quickly set in. Do you remember the movie the Fugitive? A very famous line from that movie was "What I want out of each and every one of you is a hard-target search of every gas station, residence, warehouse, farmhouse, hen house, outhouse and doghouse". Well after visiting the Hen House I can definitely confirm that people would be more interested in looking for those escaping the law than eating the breakfast food. Two stars for this place. While I've definitely had worse food, I will not return.

Despite some of the reviews for the Hen House, we decided to try it out for breakfast Saturday morning. I have had the flu and wasn't feeling to hot anyways so if the food wasn't great, that would be alright. We not only had great service, the food wasn't bad either. I would describe the Hen House as something from back home, considering I'm from a town of 2,000. It was enlightening finding something like this in Springfield. Not the best food I've ever eaten, but we will definitely be back.

I like the Hen House and its breakfast fare. Sometimes you just need a "greasy spoon!"

Pretty decent food. I got the fried mushrooms for an appetizer they were really good... Typical diner food if you aren't expecting to much I think you will be happy.

We were next door (Motel 6) for a one nighter in Springfield and wanted to hit the Hen House for breakfast since it had been years since my last visit. When you are a youngster, the Hen House certainly didn't seem as small as it does now. Three ruffians roll in for some breakfast before hitting the highway. It was one of those moments where the 'outsiders' walk into a room and everyone stops and stares - cue record scratch. It was mildly uncomfortable to say the least. At any rate, we proceeded with our breakfast order and determined to dine and get the hell out of there. The check out area was filled with eh hem Christian literature and old candy. The food was meh. I got a basic egg & cheese omelet, which was just OK. The biscuits were not very flavorful at all (unless covered in apple butter). The hash browns were mushy and again lacked flavor (unless covered in hot sauce). The food overall wasn't exactly exceptional.....even the coffee was bleh. The service was ok - not excellent nor bad. The lady at the register was fairly cordial, though. At any rate - we accomplished our mission of dining at the Hen House before leaving town. Next time I believe we will roll across the road to good ol' Cracker Barrel.

Food is good but not great. This place has a cute decor but does not seem to have a real theme. A truly average dinner with a friendly and fast staff. You get a discount with motel 6 key card.

My wife was skeptical, but my country instincts did me right. I got an Angus burger, wife had country fried steak. Some good home cooking here. Waitstaff was friendly, a few locals were in for lunch as well. Prices are great too, 17 bucks for lunch for 2

My husband and I stopped in while we were driving through to St. Louis. The service was fine, the food was not. I had the broasted chicken which was okay but not much flavor, the soup of the day was chicken noodle which believe it or not was inedible along with the side of canned peas and mashed potatoes and gravy. My husband went for a pork BBQ sandwich, the bun was old and even had a big thumb print in the middle of it. The pork was dry and tasteless. It's your typical off the highway place, convenient, but fooled into thinking it will be a little better than going to a fast food place. You end up angry for spending more than a drive thru and wishing you just listened to your gut.
