Pizza
Pizza is a famous Italian dish savored around the world. The entire credit for the popularity of Pizza in the United States goes to the chain of pizzerias all over the country. While the base and the texture of Pizza remains same across the globe, it's the toppings that differs from country to country. In the United States, you will find the top pizzerias serving pizzas with the toppings of mainly beef, bacon, chicken, ham, and sausage for the non-vegetarians. Other than these famous meat options, Pizzas with veg toppings such as mushrooms, pepperonis, garlic, tomatoes, spinach, etc. are also famous in most restaurants in the United States.
Irrespective of your locality, you will find a variety of different restaurants in your cities offering pizzas of all different types. Pizza is hot favorite among people of all ages in the United States. A large size pizza is enough to feed a family of 3 or 4 at large. Pizza is also the most preferred food whenever a group of friends is hanging out together. Pizza gained popularity in the United States after the American soldiers stationed in Italy returned from World War II.
Over the years, different pizzerias in the United States have developed their own respective regional variations. Pizza gained popularity as the iconic dish in the United States in the second half of the 20th century. Whether you prefer thin or thick crust pizza, you can find a pizza of your preference at the best pizza restaurants in your city.
Italian Cuisine
The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.
If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

We were in town to see all the Lincoln sights and we wanted some good pizza after a long day on our feet. Based on the reviews on Yelp we decided to give it a shot and we weren't disappointed! The pizza has a very nice thin crust that's really crispy. The sauce is good and the toppings were plentiful. It's hard not to want to eat up every bit of it, it's so good!! The staff is really friendly and we felt right at home with what seemed like all regulars. Just an all around great neighborhood place to sit back, relax and enjoy some good food! Definitely would visit next time we're in town!

My father in law loves this place. We keep trying it every once and awhile. I still dont get it. Not much cheese on pizza or toppings, but expensive for what you get. Salad is iceburg. Not the best.
(3)Nicole R.
The place looks a little suspect from the outside!! It's right next the a railroad crossing and the parking lot is very dark. But the food makes up for all of that!!! The best pizza I have had outside of Chicago!!
(5)Bill H.
You know those big chain theme restaurants? Yeah, this is the exact opposite. Best pizza in town.
(5)John O.
Came into Springfield late at night and wasn't sure what I could find that late at night (11:00 pm ) and we where looking for a dine-in location because we had been diving several hours before. To our pleasure we found this restaurant with late hours, dine-inn and from the reviews it appeared to be good. Once we made our way in we were greeted by a friendly bartender and our waitress was friendly as well. We ordered Pizza, spaghetti and soup. The pizza was thin and crispy, sauce and cheese was very flavorful, the pasta was soft and the sauce was warm and delicious , the soup was good as well and had a good amount of ingredients in it. We were very happy with the quality of the food and service.
(5)Caitlin P.
Worst pizza I've ever had. They used canned mushrooms rather than fresh. Crust is thin and tasteless and covered in cornmeal. Restaurant is extremely dark, dingy, dirty, and cramped.
(1)Dave C.
I've had pizza from Gabatonis' since I was probably old enough to eat pizza. The inside of this place is straight out of the 70's when they opened and manage to cram as many tables as possible in here. This place is always dimly lit and the staff, well I don't think I've ever seen a waitress under 45 here, but that is just part of the charm. The pizza is thin crust and cooked just right, they also serve a multitude of other items, but if you come here you have to get the pizza.
(3)Jason G.
Best mofo pizza in town! Thin crust style. Word.
(5)Tony R.
Staying at a local hotel I ordered a pizza, breadsticks & chicken wings. Overpriced at $36. The food was cold and tasteless. It will be a cold day in hell before I order from here again. Zero stars.
(1)Marilyn R.
Our "go to place" when we are in Springfield. Have gotten great pasta, excellent service and generous portions. No disappointments here! Coming back for sure.
(5)Tom T.
Packed on a Saturday night!! Had pizza and toasted ravioli and both were outstanding. Long wait but excellent service once we were seated. This place never disappoints!!! And now they apparently take reservations - outstanding!!
(4)Abby M.
I've been coming to Gabitoni's for 20+years for a reason. The pizza is always perfect. Their thin crispy crust is nostalgic. I suggest to get the chicken Alfredo pizza an I always ask for my pizza a little well done for the extra crispyness. Only downside is that it's really tight quarters in there. They definitely pack you in like sardines but it's well worth it.
(5)Geneva L.
This place is AMAZING!!! Their pizza is sooooo good an addicting! They have been here for many years and well deserved. The must orders are EBA, toasted ravoli, and their garlic bread! I have never dinned in the restruant so i can't speak on the svc inside or how clean it is but i can say when I have called in they were always friendly and my order is always at my house when they say it will be there. Out of all the years i ordered from them my order was never incorrect which says a lot about a company. This is one of the true gems still in spfld ill and my prediction is there will have another 50 years of svc!
(4)Maggie M.
My family's favorite place for pizza. They made a thin crust convert out of me. The EBA - everything but anchovies- is the best. The also have excellent fried mushroom and chicken livers. There is usually a wait on weekend nights so make reservations or even use carry out.
(5)Lou Z.
Thin crust pizza was great tasting. Meatballs very flavorful and moist. Staff was very attentive.
(5)Nancy W.
I am a local frequent customer of Gabatoni's. I have always gotten their pizza which is amazing. Tonight I decided I would try the lasagna. Huge mistake. It was super large and could serve 3 people. The contents had good flavor but there were NO noodles in the whole bowl. It consisted about pound of melted mozzarella and meat sauce. It was inedible. Never order this item. Stick to pizza. Lesson learned!
(1)Tyler D.
Best pizza in Springfield, hands down. A little pricey for the ambiance and what you get but it is delicious pizza! Dine-in or carry out (drive thru), this is my go to spot for pizza.
(5)Stephen W.
My wife and daughter agree that this is the best pizza we have ever had. 140 years between us, and we have had a variety of pizza across several states. (Full disclosure: no NYC.) If you like cracker thin pizza crust and scrumptious toppings, this is the top of the line. I loved it 35 years ago, and revisited 5 years ago in 2009 and it was just the same! And we had 4-5 pies while we were in town, because we knew it would be awhile before we got back. Bravo and thanks Gabatoni's!! And please keep the restaurant as it is; it feels like home.
(5)Ken K.
Best Pizza around. Flavors fresh and very tasty. Great thin, crisp crust. Also recommend the Italian Beef sandwich. Tasty beef on a super crusty bun. Consistently good.
(5)Lisa G.
Grew up in Springfield and moved away years ago but this is still my favorite pizza!! A must if you love crunchy thin crust. Try the "EBA" (everything but anchovies).
(5)Timothy J.
This was a restaurant that clearly hasn't updated anything since the early 1980's. The food was ok. They charged for every little extra. And extra dressing cost 60 cents. Two of our dishes were stuck together by gum. I have had better.
(2)Joseph V.
Have been a customer for over a decade, and today I am done giving this place a chance. Today we ordered two pizzas, an hour and twenty minutes later we received our well done pizzas nice and cold. Considering the restaurant is under ten miles away this is completely unacceptable. We used to order 2-5 pizzas a week, not any more. Never again.
(1)Rebecca A.
Picked up a large, half pepperoni and EBA last night. Always great, and stays on the list of things I want to have when I'm visiting Springfield.
(4)Sarah P.
We had a later lunch there so we had the whole place to ourselves. I'd love to go there at a busier time to see this place in action. I loved the atmosphere, very nice and clean. Our waiter was very attentive and helpful with the menu since it was our first time there. The food was hot and steaming when it arrived at our table. Everything was perfect. I had the overstuffed beef ravioli and it was spectacular. The garlic bread had assorted spices and maybe a cheese on it and it was amazing. This is definitely a locally owned restaraunt that I would highly recommend to anyone looking for down home authentic Italian Cuisine. Don't let the appearance of this place fool you. It's a little sketchy from the outside but inside it's very nice and feels just like home.
(5)Towanda B.
love love love it! I think it is .little pricey to have.to order seperate instead of a pizza salad lunch combo.
(4)Jim E.
I am from Chicago but the pizza here is some of the best. Definitely in the top 3 pizza category (and I love me some pizza)!
(5)Kerstin B.
Gabatoni's used to half cook the sausage and then cook it through on the pizza which made them the best in town hands down. They stopped doing it that way and now it is still good pizza but just not great pizza. I can remember getting so excited when mom would pick up the phone and call in an order for the greasy goodness. We would pull up to the drive through and she would let me hold the hot delight on my lap. It was served in white paper with a man on the paper holding a steaming hot pie! Ah the good ol days! Still a superior pie in the field!
(4)Olive B.
First visit to Gabatoni's was last night. Loved it! Terrific thin crust 'Za with a nicely browned top to the pie. We ordered the Veggie and the only thing I thought it needed was a little more spice - oregano/basil sprinkled atop the cheese - other than that, perfect. Our waitress, Missy (?) was superior & gave the 3 birthday goers a free slice of cake after the meal and song. Very attentive, pleasant & went the extra mile for her guests. Loved the decor -- my parent's basement from the 1940's and I Loved it. I grew up with this type of stuff and haven't seen the quality/quantity of cheeky chic since then. Very sweet and this restaurant is clean and orderly. My new favorite pizza joint in Springfield!!
(5)Jim N.
The wife and I will make the 60 mile drive just to have a night out at Gabatoni's. The place has an aged atmosphere but it is a great place for a pitcher of beer and a delicious thin crust 4 item specialty pizza! I have had pizza's all around the country and none of them ever compared to a Gabatoni's pizza.

Do you remember that strange uncle you used to have? His house smelled like a combination of burned hair, bananas and cleaning chemicals - but you knew none of those things were present. His collection of M&M's and Disney memorabilia were cool when you were little - not so much when you think back on it. His walls were covered with random cheap art he gets at the Salvation Army. He never married, hardly left the house and moved somewhere down south about 20 years ago and nobody has heard from him sense. That's what this place reminds me of. The place looks like a craphole on the outside, smells funny on the inside, is cramped, dark and the walls are covered with inexplicably awful, random art - but not in a charming, sarcastic way. In a "these people obviously don't give a shart" way. The food wasn't good. The salad was rubbery, possibly previously frozen, sprinkled with with processed, orange cheese. I got a meatball sandwich. There was nothing to it. Came with bagged chips. No beer selection, besides domestics. Only saw one girl working. She did well, given she was having to do everything herself. Other reviewers rave about the pizza. I've never had it, and never well. The issue here is pride. It's obvious that the owners have no pride in the atmosphere or building itself. If a restaurant looks and feels as bad as this place, it's difficult to think much pride is taken in cleanliness or food preparation. I couldn't even get delivery from this place, knowing what it looks like. And I don't mean to sound shallow here - i know it could. But this place made quite an impression on me. Enough to come home and write a ridiculously long rant about it.
(2)Marco M.
Awesome pizza! I grew up in Spfld but moved to St. Louis (where everyone takes pride in St. Louis style pizza) 22 years ago. I've never had a pizza in St. Louis that's nearly as good as a Gabatoni's pizza! Keep doing what you're doing.
(5)Nick M.
Went here after getting the recommendation. Appetizers were amazing. Have to try the chicken livers. Pizza was a great thin and crispy crust. This will be on my list of regular visits.
(5)Elizabeth T.
My family and I ate here during our Midwest road trip this summer... I never would have stopped and gone in because of the no windows, odd exterior except the Yelp reviews were good. But the tomato garlic pizza was delicious, as was the garlic cheese bread. And the service was much better than I'd expected. Very family friendly in the non-bar part. We'd go again next time we're in Springfield.
(3)Josh L.
I'll say this, the pizza is fantastic! But the atmosphere is for the birds. I'm grading this place mainly on the quality of the food, because it deserves the rating. This place has an old, well-seasoned oven that makes every pizza nice and crisp. Very thin crust with a slightly-charred outer edge. Yummers! Sauce is somewhat sweet and the cheese is great. This trip, we ordered a small (7") cheese pizza for my wife, a large (16") pizza for the rest of us, and a toasted ravioli as an appetizer. All were delicious! Now then, let's talk about dining IN. The place is very small, dingy yet is packed every night. Tables & chairs are wobbly and straight out of the 60's It was extremely hot on this visit (February in IL, so heat must have been on). Circulation was horrible. Gets noisy too. They've just crammed as many tables & chairs in this small space as they could. Leaves you feeling like the people next to you might as well be sitting on your lap. Then there's the clown-in-a-box toy in the front lobby. It scared the s**t out of my son & me! Sign said "out of order" so I was looking up close when it just went berserk and started jumping around and laughing REALLY loudly. My kid was crying for like 10 minutes. I was on the inside too. But I digress... They do offer carry out by way of their drive-up window. They offer parking in their lot, but the lot has more holes in it than a brick of swiss cheese. Dress code is VERY casual (think Wal-Mart). They do deliver all throughout Springfield. They're also opening a new restaurant somewhere in Springfield in March or April 2010. So be on the lookout for that. But it will take some time for the ovens to get good and broken in. If you like Monical's type of pizza (small cut pieces, very thin crust) then this place is a must. It's a bit off of the beaten-path, but well worth trying. Despite the lackluster atmosphere, the flavor of the pizza more than makes up for it. Isn't that why you're really going anyway?
(4)Tom Z.
I was passing through Springfield on my Route 66 Trip. My brother told me about Gabatoni's. I am glad he did. I had the pizza and it was really good. The crust was very thin and crispy with just the right amount of brown around the edges. I had a sausage pizza and the sausage was very good. There was just the right amount of sauce and cheese for this thin crispy crust. The people were very nice. The place had an older look to it, but was very clean. Next time I'm in Springfield I will be stopping by here again!
(4)Robyn J.
Had to see if this was the best pizza in Springfield. While I agree, it was good, I don't think it's the best in town. We went on a Saturday afternoon. Got right in. Service was good. Atmosphere was just as I expected. Old and dark, but that doesn't bother me. We ordered an appetizer combo. This thing was HUGE! Ordered a sausage and mushroom pizza w/extra cheese. It was very tasty. But as far as thin crust, I'll have to stick with Coz's off of Wabash. But you know, if all pizza tasted the same we wouldn't know what to compare it to.
(3)Barnabas H.
For Springfield, it's about as authentic as you can get. Eat at the bar, that's where it's at. I love the old-school atmosphere and the eclectic crowd. Don't expect fast service, this is a place to go and relax. Seriously, the service is slow. As far as food goes, just order the pizza - and don't be afraid to try something different. My recommendation is the BBQ chicken pizza. Cracker-thin crust is to die for. Order enough to take home because you will eat it later.
(3)Brittany H.
Favorite pizza in Springfield! We dined here on a Saturday evening and it was packed! I recommend calling ahead of time because pizzas may take up to 40 minutes. The building has been here for years, it's very retro, so don't expect anything fancy. Try their homemade toasted raviolis and get an extra large pizza because you will want leftovers!
(4)James F.
I don't want to start this out by saying this is the worse place i'v ever eaten, because i'v never been to a soup kitchen. first of all the place looks authentic with the white cloth square tablets, which makes you think you're about to try some real local mom 'n' pop style italian food, with all this in mind i decided to try a pasta dish, the mariner with mushrooms which comes with a salad, as expected the salad came first which you could tell has been sitting around as it had a yellowish colour to it, they also give you half a pound of salad, after 15 minutes of eating i was only 25% done, so i pushed that to the side when the entree came, first thing i noticed was the bright red pasta sauce, the kind you get from a jar in aldi, and the mushrooms well they where just thrown under the sauce not cooked in like i was expecting, nether the less i tried it and it was even worse than aldi, gabatonis have managed to make a worse tasting sauce than most can's, charge you $8.45 for the privilege. so if you're looking for an authenic italian experience go anywhere else.

I've been eating pizza from this place since i was a kid. Only other pizza place in town thats in the same league is Joes. Gab's is the thin crust king in this town. You can say what you want about all the chain restaurants in this town and the nightlife sucks and there is nothing to do but we own thin crust pizza.Even the average places ,lookin at you B&B are better than what you find elsewhere. Lookin at you Imo's. I don't want to hear no yap about thick crust or deep dish. This is about thin crust baby. And I definitely don't want to hear "Well , you've just never had good deep dish pizza." I get it. Get over yourself and your love of that blob of pizza you relish. Judge this for what it is. Thin crust , i mean thin crust pizza. Heres what you do: Hit the bar. Get a pitcher of whatever you think is cool. Don't even look at the menu. Order a large four item and an order of fried mushrooms. Thats it. enjoy the draft beer and regale the bartender with tales of your misspent youth until the shrooms arrive. Bite in to one and then limp your sorry ass to the bathroom cause the grease that hit the roof of mouth is about 378 degrees and you need to regroup.Don't dawdle in the bathroom , wipe those tears away and head back to your seat cause sweet mother that pizza is comin out and you don't want to miss it. The large pie is sixteen inches my friend and its cut in to squares just like grandma cut it. Dig in and don't stop till its all gone. You'll be back.Your welcome
(5)Amy G.
When I visit Springfield I end up at Gabatoni's for pizza for dinner at least once. Three stars for the thin crust pizza, casual atmosphere and friendly staff.
(3)Jon H.
This is the best pizza in Springfield, period. Sam's and Saputo's are very good. Coz's is nice. They are all thin crust.
(5)tom m.
wonderful thin crust pizzia,, is a place out of the 60's decor is old wrought iron with rickety wooden chairs, they have been there for ages!! as have the employees, and the folks in
(4)Louis C.
Came to this place after reading the positive yelps. We were in town for the State Fair and were looking for some good thin crust pizza. Gabatoni's came through and served us up some solid thin crust. The crust is tasty, light and cracker-like in texture. We had three toppings and it held up quite nicely. The pepperoni and sausage toppings were good quality and were provided in more than ample supply. The only drawback with the 'za was the sauce which was a tad bit too sweet for our tastes. We also ordered the onion rings which were quite good. They are batter dipped (the batter has some nice spice and is quite garlicky) and just a good piece of deep fried goodness. Now for the bad part my fellow yelpers. The only drawback with the place is the service/atmosphere. While the hostess who seated us was quite nice, the waitress was not friendly at all and seemed disinterested until she presented us with the check. This place is a bit off the beaten path and is clearly a joint frequented by the locals - which in my view is a good thing as we tend to look for alternatives to the national chains when travelling. I think the regulars were on to us "tourists" as we heard a loud conversation about how much they hate the state fair because of all the traffic and visitors that descend upon their hamlet and muck things up. Really too bad as they shouldbe happy that people are pouring some dollars into the local economy. Despite the less than stellar ambiance of this place, you should check it out if you're looking for some good thin crust pizza while you're in town...just don't let the regulars get under your skin for invading their club.

On the rare nights when I was a kid that my father would let us sit in front of the tv all night and order food in, we almost always got Gabatoni's - it was as much of a treat as actually being allowed to watch tv. Very good pastas (I've always been partial to their lasagna, my sister, the ravioli) and thin crust pizzas. The standout feature of the pizza is the crust - cracker thin and very tasty. It is really hard to stop eating it, as it is rather light for pizza. Of special note - while I generally don't enjoy sausage on pizza, the sausage at Gabatoni's is very, very good and, my stepmother tells me, home made. Ask my pants how much I like this pizza, go ahead... they'll tell you what I'm too embarrassed to - that I like it so much I generally have to unbutton them before I'm done. I think my pants are laughing at me.
(4)Robert S.
My family and I got a EBA pizza and a reg pepperoni pizza they were great!! Atmosphere is nice and the staff was very friendly.. With the exception of getting the drinks refilled wrong I.E. Rootbeer/ dr pepper.. The prices are also good..
(4)Keith B.
This is a local place and if you like thin crust pizza - not what places call thin crust that is really medium crust - with a crust that will be crisp with a few air bubbles, with a good special mozzarella cheese that gets just a little browned, with toppings that are fresh and diced (they are not chintzy on toppings and FYI: sausage doesn't have fennel seeds), in a place that has a bar eating area with numerous flat screen TVs, along with a restaurant area (just remodeled), great servers, full bar with cold bottled beer, then this is the place in Springfield to go. They have a full Italian menu but whenever I am in here, I get the pizza - it is all about the pizza. They have been here for over 60 years and usually crowed by 6:00. I think they do take reservations. Has a large parking lot and quite a few tables. I've never had a better pizza anywhere and I've tried many (never been to Italy).
(4)Hana W.
Great food. Small local Italian restaurant. We absolutely loved it! Our server Victor was funny, welcoming and attentive.
(5)Glenn W.
I love it....LOVE IT!!!! Like the fact that this place has a history!!!! We need more locals and less chains....If you a fan Of Gabatoni's your a fan for life....

Downtown Springfield shuts down on Sunday. Seriously, I couldn't even get room service in my hotel at 1 pm. So, my husband and I are spending a lazy, rainy Sunday in our hotel room and decide we need food. Now. This is a much harder task than you would think. Most delivery places have no website, or the ones that do, don't deliver to our downtown hotel. FINALLY, we click on a Gabatoni's menu and decide to place an order. Wow, $35 for a small pizza, some cheesy bread, and a few small wings? Oh well, desperate times call for desperate measures. The most positive thing was that the food was delivered about 20 minutes earlier than their estimate. Points in my book 'cause I was HUNGRY. The food was all just "meh". Not the absolute worst, but far, far from the best . Kind of a disappointment after having to work so hard to find a place to get food from, and all the decent reviews on yelp. It put food in my belly, but I certainly wouldn't seek it out again.
(2)Tj M.
Being in Springfield we were not sure where to get a good pizza at. We heard of a few different places around the downtown area but we decided on this place as it got some good marks on the internet. We got there and it seemed small and more of a local townie type of place. We ordered the garlic bread with cheese and this was very good with lots of cheese on it. We then got our pizza that we ordered and it hit the spot. This is the place I'd recommend as it was a thin crust pizza and the sausage was very tasty and hit the spot. This seemed more of a local hangout and they had a bar in a a separate room.If your looking for a great pizza or even Italian dishes in a informal setting this would be the place.
