Reminds me of a little place I went to all the time with my dad in downtown McKinney, TX as a kid. Set up like a small town country restaurant with a very friendly staff. I got the corned beef Reuben with gazpacho, and it was great. I really don't think you can go wrong with the sandwiches here - most of the offerings are sandwiches and soups, there are salads as well. This is a charming little lunch restaurant. I will definitely be back.

French potato soup is amazing, add is all of their soups. The unholy cow, chicken salad, and Wisconsin cheese are all wonderful as well. The service is great. Love this place

I want to start out with the ordering process when you eat at the feed store. This seems to confuse first time diners at this great Springfield establishment. When you walk in the door grab a menu from one of the menu holders on the wall and proceed to the line. While you're waiting in the line look at the menu and determine what you want to eat. When you get to the front of the line you place your order and they give you a ticket stub. Proceed to your seat with your ticket stub and sit down. As your drinks and your food are ready they will call out the number on your ticket stub and bring it to your table. Every time I go there's a hiccup in the line because someone doesn't understand how to wait in line and order. I have been eating at the feed store for over 20 years. They specialize in a soup and sandwich at lunch that's it that's all. They do have limited hours because they only focus on lunch but in general the hours work if you're in the Springfield area around lunchtime. I have never had any of the soups that I did not like. I especially like the Wisconsin cheese and the baked potato. As for sandwiches my wife and I enjoy the chicken salad and the ham and cheese with sharp cheddar. I think it's important to keep in perspective when you walk in the door that you're ordering a sandwich and some soup. You're not going to order some super fancy, expertly paired and thought out meal, your Ordering a sandwich. The Feedstore is a Springfield favorite. The bottom line is if you're downtown in Springfield Illinois around lunchtime check this place out. The prices are great the food is good and the atmosphere is awesome.

The cheese soup is delicious! I have to get a bowl every time I come home to visit! My Mom loves the vege bagel. It's all delicious
(5)Stephanie W.
Neat place historically. Service was very cold and distant. Not personable. Felt like I was being herded like cattle. Chicken salad was average but good. Had mushroom bisque soup. No better than Campbell's Cream of Mushroom soup. Very thick and somewhat bland. Certainly worth trying if you are in the area.
(3)Sue Ellen B.
Yummy soups and beautiful salads. The sandwiches don't disappoint and carrot cake is delish! Every soup I've tried, (I think all) is wonderful! Especially cream of mushroom. If you love cheese, Wisconsin cheese soup!
(4)Jessica H.
So so so soooo good. Classic old sandwich shop. Soups are beyond superb. I got the signature chicken sandwich and tomato bisque soup. Blew me away! So yummy. Definitely coming back here for my next trip to Speingfield!

Dear Yelp Gods, What the hell did you remove my review of the Feed Store for? It was rather flattering and did not use offensive language. Thanks for making me waste my time and write another one, grrrrr, it will not be even remotely as Useful, Funny or Cool as the first one. I'm making an unhappy face at you Yelp, yes I am!!!!!! :( With that being said, the Feed Store is a loooong time Springfield family favorite. We ate there often when I was a kid and every holiday when we come home, my father orders out several pints of soup that we basically exist on until it's gone. Soup again? No complaints here! I'm particularly fond of their cream based soups (Wisconsin cheese, potato, cream of broccoli, anything seafood), but am also a giant fan of their beef barley. We even mix different flavors together (in the privacy of our own home, of course)....love, love, love the soup. I don't think we've ever had a clunker. So why not a 5 star? Sandwiches are kind of meh and overpriced. They aren't bad, per se, just not that interesting. You could easily make the same sandwiches at home with better results and for far less money. The soups, on the other hand, are quite good across the board and make this place worth a stop when in town. What I'm saying here is skip the sandwiches. Really. Why waste your precious eating out dollars/stomach space on a standard sammie when you can pig out on some fantastic soup? I'll never understand. Lines are fairly savage at lunchtime, so be forewarned if you head over there during the day.

Great Scott they have great soup!
(4)Zack B.
Very busy and popular lunch restaurant. You wait in line to order, place your order, then are seated by a staff member to await your food. They have a vast array of both sandwiches and soups to choose from each and every week day. All taste rather home cooked over restaurant made which is not a bad thing. I'm a fan of many of the soups and sandwiches alike. The portions are somewhat small and it is a tad on the expensive side for Springfield. Be prepared for a slight wait in the order line and you should probably limit the size of your party as seating is tight.

Soooo...if what you want is a homemade sandwich with fresh ingredients, homemade soup (if they haven't run out of your favorite) that people rave about, and a SUPER QUICK service time...go here! Feed Store has been in Springfield for decades and does a great job at the above. So...why no 4th star you may ask? Well, I'm not a fan of cafateria style dining but that isn't why they lose a star. The dining room staff just deliver food...so small tips are received. That seems to translate into a lackadaisical attitude. They are prompt...don't get me wrong...just not very happy. The final issue are their hours of operation. Very short because they specialize in lunches. No hate mail! I know Springfield LOVES this place. I just...well...like it.
(3)Tom T.
The soup is outstanding but the sandwiches are bland and unimpressive. I'll go back for the soup but nothing else.
(3)Morris R.
Stopped by for some sightseeing and lunch here while driving through southern IL and I was pleasantly surprised with my random choice for lunch. With a perfect tourist spot right near the old capitol and historic sights, they're perfect for out-of-towners. They are only open for lunch though, and I just made it in time (2:30) to order soup and sandwiches. They have a great variety of sandwiches and soups, all well-made and yummy. The tomato bisque was creamy and flavorful. The breads are good - baguettes, bagels, croissants, and the service is friendly. It's a quaint place with old fashioned but simple interior, and really quiet and relaxed at the end of the lunch time 2:00 - 2:30.

Today was my first time at the Feed Store. Had an Unholy Cow sandwich & a bowl of Cheese soup! Delicious!!!! There were so many good things on the menu that I am going to have to go back again! Can't wait!

5 stars for atmosphere - the Feed Store reminds of summer days as a kid when I would go out with my mom for lunch at a local cafe in Raleigh that is now closed. The building the Feed Store is located in, has beautiful decorative high ceilings, American classic decor, and air conditioning. It feels reminiscent of another era and comfortable at the same time. We got there for lunch shortly after 11. There was a line but service was very efficient - taking our order while we were in line, giving us our ticket, and having us sit where we would like. There are about 7 soups that you can pick from on any given day and a bunch of sandwiches that you can get on a variety of breads from white, wheat, baguette, sourdough, croissant, etc. I ordered the chicken salad on wheat and a cup of the mushroom bisque. Both were simple and delicious. It's not the best chicken salad I've ever had but it was simple with the chicken, mayo, celery pulsed finely. The mushroom bisque was creamy and not too heavy which was great because we had room for dessert. We had the seasonal blueberry lime cheesecake - fresh blueberries and a hint of lime are in it - it was a delicious cheesecake and not too rich. I look forward to coming back to the Feed Store the next time I am I Springfield - it is a treasure.
(4)Daniel G.
A cozy little place located near the old capital. It had a lunch-centric menu full of well crafted sandwiches. The highlight is definitely the soup, pairing it with a sandwich was a good choice. I'd eat here again.
(4)Chelsea M.
Saw this looked cute and got great reviews on Yelp so we stopped in on a business trip. Very busy around the late lunch hour but we didn't have to wait in line long. I am glad we were seated near the front of the restaurant- away from the kitchen because it was pretty noisy back there! The food was great! We got sandwiches, soup, and the amazing raspberry chocolate cheesecake and apple cake. It was all delivered to our table quickly. The staff is very friendly and helpful!
(4)Warren W.
I enjoyed the food greatly. Most of the time I have had take out for corporate lunches. While everything I have had has been quite good, I do feel that most of the options fare on the heavy side, and am often wanting something a bit lighter for lunch. The lack of diversity leaves me feeling somewhat constained for lunch options.
(3)Erin N.
SOUP! Soup soup soup. Good soup. Can be kind of annoyingly loud and packed when it gets busy. But the soup is worth it.
(5)D W.
I am required by law to come and eat here when in Springfield. In fact, I will alter my schedule some way, some how, to eat here more than once. Love the mushroom soup. Chicken salad sandwich was very good. Never had a bad meal. Highly recommended.
(5)Fei C.
The food is average but I like the fact that I can order ' no choice ' n the wall paper is quite distinct :)
(3)B.R. S.
I went sightseeing in Springfield with my husband a few weeks ago and went to Feed for lunchtime. It's across the street from the Old State Capitol. There were pretty good yelp reviews and it was very busy so we thought we'd try it out. I ordered the seafood chowder and was pretty disappointed. It was very bland and the only seafood in it were a few microscopic shrimps mixed in. We had the cheesecake for dessert and that was a little too rich for me. Maybe I just ordered the wrong thing...
(2)Dan R.
This place has good sandwiches. We enjoyed it very much. The girls at the Starbucks recommended it to us and they were spot on.
(4)Kimberly W.
If you have never been to the Feed Store, run there now. Seriously. The homemade soups are to die for, Wisconsin Cheese being my absolute favorite soup of all time (sorry grandma). It gets crazy busy at peak lunch hour, but if you get there right at open, or a little after 1, there isn't as much of a wait. This is always one of the places I insist on going when I'm in town visiting my parents, and if it's closed because of the holidays it haunts me until I finally get my bowl of soup, usually months later. It;s that good! Here's a tip (though I secretly love watching out of towners goof this up)... get in line!! This isn't a sit down and order place. There are menus when you walk in, as well as posted on the wall leading up to the front. Get in the line, figure out what you want, and order at the front. Also, don't send somebody to stake out a table for you, the staff will make them get up. They have a system, don't try to mess with it.
(5)John B.
Really fantastic sandwiches. This restaurant is reminiscent of the famous Sienfield soup nazi. Quirky house rules and you better know what you want when you reach the front of the line. Try mixing the soups 50/50 for some great flavors! I only wish this place had better hours. Oh yea and the decor feels like your grandma may have chosen the wallpaper - and I mean that in a familiar, cozy, good way.
(4)Angela J.
Best soup ever. No contest. I find the rare negative reviews baffling. Where do you suggest better soup?
(5)Amber K.
I loved this place it was just what we needed after eating fast food and chain style resturant food all weekend on our roadtrip My husband got a roastbeef sandwich and the potato soup. Me something with cream cheese and sprouts and a side of potato salad.....yum! The food tasted homemade well probably not my home but like grandma made. Not like it was microwaved cooked or pre packaged. It was comfortable and happy. if you are looking for good food fair prices and bad wall paper go here it is the perfect lunch spot!
(4)Allie B.
YIKES. It is winter and it is Illinois. But still, the soup is goopey and the sandwiches.... glutinous. Not my thing but the service is wonderful! Phone home.
(1)Josie B.
This place is mediocre at best. I loved the cheese soup - my love ended there. Their chicken salad on wheat wonder-bread is mushy and boring, flavorless mush. Everything on the menu reminds me of hospital food, which considering I work in hospitals, it's something i know a little bit about. Most of the sandwiches are things you could buy at a grocery store deli for cheaper. Skip this place unless you're in the mood for soup - the wisconsin cheese is great and my coworker liked the mushroom soup.
(2)John G.
Soups and sandwiches were fresh and delicious! We had veggie hero and pastrami with mushroom soup and broccoli soup. Everything was fresh, flavorful and made to order! The staff was friendly and very helpful with the ordering process. If we are in the area again we will Definitely eat here.
(5)Jason Ã.
Seriously dry sandwiches. I ordered the chicken salad (#1 seller) it was dry chicken salad with a small piece of cheese. I chose smoked Gouda but it has minimal flavor. My wife bought a roast beef, again very dry nothing but meat and cheese. The macaroni salad is primarily mayonnaise. Subway would have been better. The guy that sat us and brought us our sandwiches was super friendly and worked his butt off. I tossed in an extra star for him.
(2)Ben S.
One of our favorite lunch places but rare that we can leave the office early enough to avoid spending an hour there. Soups are always great and the sandwiches are what sandwiches were before Americans got really fat from eating ridiculous portions. The carrot cake is also really, really good. If you go there, understand the place is quirky and they really don't care about how things could be done better. They are open for a few hours each day and closed on weekends except for the weekend of the art fair.
(4)Barry M.
We were visiting Springfield and had lunch at The Feeds. Great soup, great service and great sandwiches. Will be back!
(5)Brooke R.
Ya know, I had high hopes of this. I was kind of let down. I was confused by the whole ordering system. I don't see the need to make it so difficult just to get food. If you already have a waitress why not just give her your stinkin' order at the table? I don't know, maybe I am missing something. Atmosphere was eh. Wait staff was so nice. Unfortunately we did have to watch one waitress cleaning with her hot pink undies half hanging out of her pants and all of her fellow employees would point and laugh (behind her back) rather than tell her. Which was a little lame. I didn't know they offered entertainment. The food was okay. My chicken salad was like chicken mash. The crossiant was good. The wisconsin cheddar soup was divine. But all in all it wasn't worth the $26 tab for two sandwiches, two bowls of soup, waters and a bag of chips. If I would go again I think I would just order the soup and maybe some bread.
(3)Bethany S.
Right next to the historic Old State Capitol; this is a local favorite. Soups, sandwiches and dessert - this is a lunch-only restaurant. The atmosphere is charming, though it's not a big place. Large groups should try to go elsewhere. Make sure you try the Wisconsin Cheese soup.
(4)Katie F.
The Feed Store is a downtown Springfield classic. Excellent for lunch, though it gets extremely crowded and has a long line out the door some days. The food here is consistently good -- not amazing, but you won't have a bad experience here. Personal recommendations: Beef Barley Soup, Chicken Salad Sandwich (they're famous for it!), and a Pineapple Concoction, one of my favorite drinks of all time.
(4)Melissa B.
Oh my! I love the Feed Store. It is definitely a Springfield landmark. I have been frequenting this place since we moved to Springfield when I was 13 and my mom has been coming here since she was in high school. I would argue this is THE place to go for lunch downtown. They are only open for lunch, M-S, but it always packed during this time. My personal favorites are the chicken salad on a croissant, the prairie turkey on french, the bagel with veggie cream cheese and the lox bagel. Yum! All of these are amazing. Everything is made fresh-the bread, the veggie cream cheese, the chicken salad-which is oh my god good. It is the creamiest I have ever had. It's more than likely insanely bad for you-but oh well, it is worth it once in a while. Their soups are a must. I love the cream of broccoli, wisconsin cheddar, the gazpacho, the mushroom bisque-basically all of them. If you can, save room for dessert. The cheesecake is delicious, as is the apple cake, carrot cake...mmmmm. The atmosphere has been the same since they opened according to my mom. Dark-kind of classy-wall paper, dark wood tables and chairs in this huge open room. When you get there you stand in line, place your order, then are instructed where to sit. They give you the end of the ticket with your number on it. When the wait staff walks around with your order, they yell out the number. "Number 98!". You raise your hand and are delivered a little bit of heaven. Seriously, this place is that good! If you are in the area, check it out!
(5)Melissa H.
Overpriced deli with dry bread and hardly any condiments. You can make better sandwhiches at home, trust me. I don't know what they hype is about.
(2)Patricia H.
I have never been to a place to eat like the Feed Store. I could go there for lunch and have something different every day and be satisfied. Their hours are a little funky as are most downtown restaurants that serve only lunch. It can also be difficult to find a parking spot close by.
(4)Random D.
Visited the Feed store for the first time while in Springfield. I was pleasantly surprised to see a pretty good soup place in Springfield that is very lacto-vegetarian friendly. Almost all of their soups are cream based and hence probably not really very healthy (even though it is a soup!)-however the spinach soup was real tasty. What I really liked was the service-it was different and relaxing for a change. Will go there again.
(4)Johnny K.
This place was pretty busy at lunch but was just okay. It was not bad food but not exceptional. I had the chicken salad sandwich and a bowl of Wisconsin Cheese soup. Both tasted like something you could get from the local grocery store. Good thing was that the price was very reasonable ($8 total) and was ample to fill me up.
