Cozy Dog Drive In Menu

We were on our way to Missouri and it was around lunch time so I asked my guy to come here. We were on a time restriction, so we just got it to go. I was expecting it to be in some small town area, but it was right next to a Walgreens and other businesses around. We opted for the family pack of 4 corn dogs and large fries and added cheese sauce. I wished there was a 3 corn dog deal, but no complaints really. The corn dogs were crispy and fresh. I liked the fries and cheese sauce, but I wished the fries were a bit longer and not the scraps at the end of the bag. Hard to dip in the cheese sauce. =( We usually leave at night for our road trips, but I had to take advantage of the opportunity. I'm glad we did and hopefully get another chance in the future.

Shared a special (2 cozy dogs (fried corn dogs) and fries) for $5.50 and fried mushrooms. I liked the cozy dogs although they could have been crispier. My sister liked the mushrooms. It wasn't enough for me. I wanted another cozy dog but they are $4 individually. They also had potato salad and doughnuts on hand written menu. I'm not sure if these were daily specials. Lunch was busy. Seating was limited so we invited a nice woman we met waiting for our food to sit our table. Didn't use the restroom but it was pretty accessible for my wheelchair. We will be coming back to the "corn dog birthplace."

Dee Lish Us! This is a fried food extravaganza! I has the cozy dog and onion rings; My husband had the pork tenderloin and fried mushrooms. The breading on everything is delicious and it was well cooked. They feature Pepsi products and regular Dr Pepper, the only diet is diet Pepsi. The cozy dog covering is light and fluffy and a teeny tiny bit sweet. I read so many bad things about the chili that I asked to try a sample of it. Trust those reviews! Don't eat the chili! It's the worst chili I've ever had! It's more of a chili "Sauce" and is nothing more than chili gravy with a little bit of ground beef in it and then half again as much of grease. Lots and lots of grease! In fact the first bite I took coated the roof of my mouth with a greasy film. Stop on in, step back in time, and have a greasy meal at a boomerang formica table.

All route 66 decos. Pretty fun place to dine at. And it turned out that their famous cozy dog is just corn dog :p not saying it's not good. I love the taste. And price is pretty cheap. I'm not sure if they still do drive-in bc I didn't see the drive in window. Hence, stop for a meal for route 66 feel, but it's just some ok tasting dogs. :D Not bad, but no desire to try another one for me. :p

Cozy Dogs, or corn dogs as the rest of the world knows them, were popularized in this restaurant along with their chilli. It's a fun little stop on Route 66 if you're driving through Springfield. They food choices are limited to hotdogs, burgers, chicken fingers, Cozy Dogs, fries, and onion rings and all the other fried food you'd find at the fair or similar restaurants. The atmosphere is fairly clean, the prices are cheap, and the location is easy to get to if you're heading South on 6th. Overall it's a staple in the Springfield restaurant history.

Not very crowded. The cozy dog was delicious. I must say though it is just a hotdog dipped in corn batter. Just one of those places I guess you have to go to. Kind of a roadside attraction I guess. Three cozy dogs came to $6.53.

  • Tom T.

Great Route 66 roadside attraction with great greasy cheeseburgers, crispy corn dogs and hand cut fries. Great place for kids too!!!

The food was great, the service was wonder. Nice place to eat at with more than reasonable prices. The place hold allot of memorabilia

    (5)
  • Debra W.

Freshly made to order food. If you love corn dogs at the fair you will get the best one you've ever eaten right here! Fun environment with Route 66 souvenirs that are reasonably priced.

Fun retro decor. Nice place to feel early 20th century. Cozy dog (corn dog) was good. Not very special though.

Im going to my old friends place. And I wanted to come here. This place has the best corn dogs! Come on! It beats every corn dog place there is! Love how it's on Route 66. In Illinois! I ordered a combo. And ate some. It was a real good meal! The food comes out faster! And it's cheap! This is a awesome place. You should try it. "I love this place! The atmosphere is real cool!"

YESSSS! The last time I was in Springfield, I missed out on Cozy Dog. This time I planned our trip around their hours. We got a family pack which was 4 dogs and a large fries. Of course I added an extra Cozy Dog for my dude plus cheese for the fries. The fries are of the hand cut variety and delicious. The Cozy Dogs are perfection. I asked my dude what he thought of it when he was done. He said, "you know, it's a good corn dog". Sigh. He doesn't get the magic.

I was excited to eat here and found it on visitspringfield.com The prices are fine and the atmosphere is fun. I love a good nostalgic diner and was excited to visit a drive in on route 66. Maybe I've just been spoiled by the high quality all beef franks from Portillos and Vienna Beef. I was not impressed at all by the quality of the food and was pretty disappointed. If they switched to Vienna beef it would be ten times better. The hot dogs were really puny and tasted like cheap generic grocery store hot dogs.

Today was our first time at Cozy Dog and we loved it. Gourmet? No. Expensive? Definitely not. Good food? Fun? You betcha'! The corn dogs were very good, the best I've had. They make their own secret batter, They come to your table with a crispy coating, a steamy inside, all wrapped around a plump hot dog. What's not to like? My son had a double hamburger that he said was good (no leftovers). My wife had the tenderloin that easily was twice, maybe three times, the size of the wimpy white-bread bun (what's that about??). It's served plain but you can add pickles, onions, mustard, ketchup, etc. on your own. The onion rings were good but not memorable, The homemade fries were a little on the limp side but they tasted very good and were not greasy. Recommended. Thank you Cozy Dog. We really enjoyed it and we'll be back!

  • Rich C.

Only ok, prices not too bad for what you get. Cozy (corn) dog $2.05, nothing special-breading good, but dog tasted like a cheap chicken/pork dog. 6 onion rings for $2.

  • Joe B.

The corn dogs are great, as you might expect, but this place is actually more interesting for the Route 66 mini-museum that's inside the restaurant. There's usually a short wait before your order is ready, so do check out the memorabilia and books while you wait. What else are you going to do?

So very cozy! I love a good historic food landmark. Perhaps there's nothing extra special about the Cozy Drive In in the grand scheme of things, but if you're in a rush and want something better than McDonald's or Arby's, Cozy Drive In gives travelers a fun and cheap option. The history of the corn dog seems to be unclear. Started in the 1920s, the corn dog was baked instead of fried. Ed Waldmire, Jr. decided that baking these sandwiches was for the birds and put that baby on a stick and fried it! Thus making the cozy dog. The Cozy Drive In is convenient. Right off the 55 business road, it's easy to swing off the highway and grab a quick cozy dog. Instead of grabbing dollar burgers from Mickey D's, I like to pass by the usual fare to grab some cheap history. And the food is cheap. Each cozy dog is $1.95. For ten dollars, you can get four cozy dogs and a large order of fries to share with your sweetie. While you're waiting for your food, there is plenty of Route 66 memorabilia to gaze upon. I heart Cozy Drive In so! If you're travelling to or from Chicago, it is an option that is cheap, convenient, and tasty!

I have many fond memories of this place, as a kid i went there with my parents and I have taken my kids. There is no place like here, everything is made fresh and you can tell this is another staple of spfld ill. The meat to cornbread ratio is great and their chili dogs are good. Places like this become family traditions from the quality and enviroment. Their fries are fresh cut and perfectly seasoned to accompany that delicious corn dog. There is a reason this place made it on food network its timeless charm and quality

    (4)
  • Konner D.

It's a fun joint to visit now and again. Cozy Dog isn't fantastic food, but you sort of walk in knowing it's not supposed to be. My biggest problem with the place is that I consistently get soggy fries. With those being half the meal, it's important they're done right. But if you want a greasy treat, grab yourself a Cozy Dog (NOT a corn dog). You won't be blown away, but you'll probably be happy you stopped in.

  • Steve G.

I was excited to try the home of the Corn Dog and it was good. It tasted different. It reminded me of Indian food. Almost like a Samosa. That being said the fries were cold, almost frozen. I am sure I got a bad batch. And the hot dog was nothing to brag about either. I have had much better hot dogs in Chicago. But it is a cool place with a lot of history.

Good corndogs. That was all I decided to purchase. Appeared clean and servers were friendly. When in Springfield I will be back.

  • Chris K.

Do not leave Springfield without having a Cozy Dog! They are delicious! If you ever had a corn dog at a state or county fair as a child way back in the '60's or earlier these taste like they did back then. A hint of a sweet flavor in the cornmeal and deep fried perfectly on a very delicious dog. I only wish we could have come back for more during our trip, but we caught them on the last day before the closed for they Memorial Day holiday. Next time we'll plan our trip around them being open so we can visit more than once!!!

  • Matt W.

I tried this place because the history, and because it showed up in all the food guide websites. I don't get it. The cozy dogs (aka corn dogs) were OK, but really not amazing, and the pork tenderloin sandwich tasted like it was made of cardboard. There were a lot of hot, fresh cut fries, but that's not really an exciting reason to gush over the place, and the decor is supposed to remind you of the freewheeling open road days, but it just felt tired. I guess it's one of those things where I can say I've been there, now, but I wouldn't go back for a second look.

  • Mary B.

This is a classic Route 66 invented the cozy dog (corn dog) nostalgic kind of place. Fun local paraphernalia. Fast food, order at the counter and wait for your name to be called. I had the cozy dog and it was tasty and fresh. Great for the kids, kid type food. Quick and easy

    (4)
  • Amy M.

I asked the woman at the counter if the "Cozy Dog" was a corn dog - answer was, "yes only better!" Looking for a quick meal on Rte 66? Corn dogs, hot dogs, fries, onion rings, mozz sticks and fried mushrooms filled us all. Better than your run of the mill diner. In and out in less than an hour. There might even be a geocache nearby. Would visit again our next time through town.

  • Theresa P.

My first cozy dog and fries were exactly like the ones I'd buy at the carnival in the summer. It gave me a warm fuzzy feeling of the good ole days. The hotdog was the size of your typical Oscar Mayer hotdog then dipped in the cozy dog batter and deep fried to perfection. The fries are skin-on potatoes again very similar to the fries from a carnival. The Route 66 atmosphere was nostalgic. An all around good experience.

This was my first time eating a cozy dog and let's just say it failed to impress me!!!

  • Eric V.

Cute place. Enjoy the history of it (Route 66, lay claim to creating the corn dog, etc). The food . . . meh. I ordered two Cozy Dogs (basic corn dogs) and . . . I've had better. In fact, these kinda made me feel a bit sick for the rest of the day. The batter that they dip the dogs in is, in my opinion, WAY too thick. I guess it's all a matter of taste. If you're going here, I think you're probably going for the experience rather than the food.

    (3)
  • Mary W.

Stopped here before checking reviews - should have. Chili dog was ok - corn dog was barely ok. Nothing special here - but I also want to comment on the employees - this is an open kitchen cooking - the employees were sullen - no conversation --no hello how are you - just what do you want to order - then you could hear them talking about cleaning something & discussing whether or not to use bleach to clean it. Been traveling for a month & this was the worst food we have had. In its hay day was probably pretty cool but management needs to make some changes -

    (1)
  • Emily M.

Nothing beats the original cozy dog. And the classic Route 66 atmosphere is still here.

    (5)
  • Cornelis T.

This was the first time we got corndogs, after this i decided to get two corndogs tattooed with a route 66 logo above it. I LOVED this, it was really good and i have a new addiction now. Too bad i don't live anywhere near springfield and we don't even have a thing like corn dogs in europe. :(

We saw this place spotlighted on Man vs Food and decided we would try it next time we were in Springfield. My husband and I were in Springfield for two days recently and headed over once we dropped our stuff off at the hotel. Since corn dogs are a guilty pleasure for both of us we were looking forward to trying some here. We sat down to dig in and after a few bites we both looked at each other and made the "I don't get it" face. These corn dogs are nothing special. The corn meal batter is crispy but bland and a bit dry. I found myself trying to salt the thing just to give it some flavor. My husband even said the frozen all beef corn dogs you can buy at the store were better than these

    (1)
  • Christopher P.

I was excited to finally have the chance to try an original corn dog on a stick. Turns out there was not much to be excited about. Tasted exactly like I would get at a carnival in my area. Not really special I Enjoyed the burger but that's about it. Won't go out of my way to try this place again.

  • Alex M.

Saw this place on the Food Network and had to come for a few cozy dogs when my girlfriend and I were on vacation in Springfield. Cozy dogs were great- the batter has a little kick to it, so it's got much more flavor than your average corn dog. Reasonably priced as well. The place has a nice atmosphere to it, love the route 66 theme to it!

  • Juan G.

I love corn dogs!! And this is a corn dog. This place claims to be the inventor of the corn dog, which I thank them if they did, but the corn dog has not been improved, changed, or altered here nor anywhere else they are sold. Thus if you want a good normal corn dog, come here. This place has the Route 66 and the history of the corn dog nostalgia hanging all over the place. So it is cool to see and say that I've been here. I will come back again. Thanks again for inventing one of my favorite American foods!! p.s. I know it's Cozy Dog or Dog on a Stick...

  • Elizabeth V.

Had looked forward to going here, after arriving though my hopes to a great lunch and experience dwindled. Walking through the door you are greeted with many Route 66 items, expected since it is one Route 66 but none of it really matches the resturant. The food was average and nothing to get excited about. Each of us ordered a corn dog and enjoy ketchup to dip our corn dogs in but the ketchup they had left a funny taste in my mouth and somewhat ruined my corn dog. The fries were pretty decent but other than just saying that you've been to the "Cozy Dog" there is no reason to visit.

    (2)
  • Beth P.

From notes that I've seen on other websites, this place claims to be the birthplace of corn dogs. The cozy dogs (corn dogs) were just as good as any that you get at festivals during the summer. The fries still have the skins on. This is worth it to stop if you're in the area, you like corn dogs and you want to see a bit of Route 66 history. :-)

    (4)
  • Kevin B.

Maybe I've been conditioned by food at state and county Fair's, but my wife and I really didn't care much for the corn dogs.

    (2)
  • Arlene G.

i really dont see what the big deal is about this place! Im not a fan of hotdogs in the 1st place but since it was on the to-do list for route 66 spots my girl & i decided 2 stop in. she had a hotdog & she didnt like it. i had a hamburger & it was ok. nothing on it, just bread & burger. i also ordered fried mushrooms & that was the best thing we had! somebody tell me again why this is a must stop cuz it certainly isnt 4 their food!

If you care even a tiny bit about healthful eating, I consider this is a good place to skip...even if your friends want to try it. Coney dogs should never be on the list of possibilities for those who value their arteries. The grilled sandwiches were greasy. The first bite of chili tasted so horrible I considered it inedible, but no refund was offered. In my opinion, there is not one thing on the menu that a person who is reasonably interested in healthy eating should eat. Avoid....except for the Route 66 memorabilia.

  • Brandon M.

Walking in the door to the Cozy Dog you get a nice feeling of old school short order nostalgia, no menus just a over head menu of what is offered. I opted for a bit of a sampler 1 Cozy Dog, 1 small fry and a small order of chciken strips. they take your order and you pay walk over to fill up your soda and by about that time the food is ready and on the counter. I am not a big corn dog fan so I was not expecting much, however this was the best corn dog I had ever had soft and fresh, some one pinch me becasue I am in heaven, the frys are fresh cut and greasy the way god intended frys to be and the chciken strips where amazing crisp and tender. None of the food is going to have a bold outstanding flavor but it will all be fresh and wonderful, th corn dogs are dipped in cornbread batter then fried right in front of you, something you can not beat. They open up early in the morning and serve breakfast to I however have always popped in around lunch. If you come in during the noon hour be prepared to wait a little bit as they get packed around lunch time, one of the big 3 I like stop at in Springfield, while the food may not be exotic it fresh and as pure as it can get. The Cozy dog is solid experience. I have been here 3 times and while it is a little rough getting to from the south be patient and you can make it around.

  • Jason B.

Looks like you either love the place or hate it... count me among the lovers. If I had a last meal on earth, it would be a hot dog. But you know what... a hot dog isn't really a hot dog to me. It was all I would eat for years growing up. Every day, same ritual after school, steaming a dog and bun. It is one of the foods that just brings me back to happy days every time. Now Cozy Dog ain't a hot dog and it might be a corn dog but it really is a Cozy Dog. After all these years serving 'em up they have earned the right to stake their claim. The passion and the eccentricities of a true piece of Americana earns a rightful place in my heart. The memorabilia, the souvenirs, it's all part of the experience. A mini-museum and shrine all it's own, I'm happy to know that it's still family owned, and it shows. In the best way possible. If you don't get Cozy Dog I bet we wouldn't agree on lots of things... music, beer, politics, the meaning of life... and you know what, that's cool. That's the beautiful thing about Route 66. You CAN keep on driving. Love, peace, and the Mother Road...

I guess it's a neat little place to visit once in your life, but the original corn dog SUCKS in comparison to competing products.

  • Paige M.

We were looking for a bite after flying in. We saw the cute spinning sign and decided to give it a try. We are so glad we did! We found it to be a landmark on the famed route 66. It is filled with amazing memorabilia. It was the perfect snack too! As the birthplace of the corn dog they have the best corn dogs I have ever had. For less than $20, we got four corn dogs, a huge order of fries and four large drinks. So glad we stopped.

  • Henry V.

Went there with a group of homeschool friends while visiting Lincoln sites. First off I haven't found to many corn dogs I don't like. But didn't care much for these corn dogs, the chili dog was good and the fries looked to be hand cut but lacking salt. Lots of cool history inside.

    (2)
  • Igor C.

Go for the nostalgia. The cozy dog was OK, but the days special of tenderloin was below par. The fries were OK but limp.

Mmmm...corn dog We were in our state's capital for a party and had the perfect 'when in Rome' agenda: Cozy Dog. Neither of us had been there but we each share a similar affinity for corn dog culture. When we pulled up it was almost exactly as we expected it. Yeah, we had seen it on TV before, but like many places you need to see it to believe it. CD has a great sleepy diner feel which lends itself perfectly to the whole Route 66 experience. All food aside there seemed to be everything else needed for a visit to Springfield or if you're passing through on a road trip (i.e. maps, brochures, bathrooms, t-shirt, etc.). I wasn't shy about my tourist-y ways, I took my fair share of pictures and looked around the entire restaurant, I would have regretted it if I hadn't. And then the food came. Three corn dogs, medium fries, one soda, and my sweetheart; I felt like we were going steady and about to hit up the sock hop after we ate. We shared the meal and that was plenty for the two of us, but obviously I love corn dogs more so I win. Honestly, they're awesome. I wait all year to get corn dogs at fairs and have tried to visit a Sonic for one but it just wasn't the same. These were perfect: tasty dog, crispy/fluffy/sweet corn bread, great....wooden stick. The fries were just awesome too. I'll be back every time I go to Springfield, for sure.

  • Daniel Dillon C.

Cozy Dog invented the corn dog, or so the yellowed newspaper articles affixed to the wall of the restaurant claim. While this may be of dubious veracity, it's a fact that the cozy dogs here are incredibly tasty. They're really the best items to get; even though I'm a health nut and eat this kind of food once every decade, I couldn't help but salivate over these golden brown battered hot dogs with a hint of sugar in every bite. Unfortunately, Cozy Dog has little going for it besides the cozy dogs; our chilli hot dog was positively gross in that "why am I eating this?" kind of way. I wouldn't wish a change in the ambiance and/or decor, because hey...it's Cozy Dog...not a Michelin rated place, but still...it's a fast food joint. In short...if you really really really want an amazing corn dog, make the trip to Cozy Dog. If you actually want to eat a meal, go somewhere else.

    (3)
  • Kevin B.

Love Cozy Dog. Food is excellent and everytime I have been there my food was made fresh. You wait about 5 minutes, but it is well worth it. Prices are good and the servings are large, especially french fries. A large order would probably feed a family of 4. I highly recommend this place for a great lunch or dinner. I think they do breakfast too, but I have never tried it.

  • Richard F.

Nice people and love the cozy dogs. Stop by and see a bit of history. The fries are tasty also.

Things to do on Route 66... keep driving. You are not missing much here. I crossed this off my bucket list today, and thanks to this place I have one less year to complete the remainder of my bucket list. The food is just really greasy and the experience is not what it is hyped up to be AT ALL. A. A Cozy dog is a corn dog. B. A Cozy dog is an AVERAGE corn dog. C. People that work there don't want you to call them corn dogs. D. On Route 66 if it walks like a corn dog and talks like a corn dog, some how, the damn thing has a new name. (kinda like that whole '90s Prince, artist-formerly-known-as, thing) I'm being nice in saying average by the way, you know those cheap ass hot dogs that your elementary school or summer camp used to serve.... these are them, wrapped in Cornmeal batter, served on a road people give a damn about.

  • Colleen S.

Nothing fancy, but if you're looking for a good corn dog definitely give it a try. The decorations are interesting and give you something to look at.

Taking a road trip from Champaign, IL to St. Louis, MO... why not stop in Springfield to try out the original hot dog on a stick?!? I made my way to the Cozy Dog Drive In with a couple friends, excited to try out the famous hot dogs featured on various tv shows. The price of a Cozy Dog was $1.95, a bit high, but with a special price on 6 dogs for $9.75 that day, we opted for the bulk order to save a bit of coin as well as a large fries order to share. The price after drinks was about $20 for 3 people... not too bad for a taste of history... Onto the taste. The hot dogs were some variation of an Oscar Mayer weiner, freshly dipped and fried in a not too heavily with cornmeal and just a hint of sweetness batter. The outside was crisp, insides hot, batter cooked through. Overall a success! Is it the best corn dog I've ever had? I'm not sure that I would say that, but they rank up there with the freshly dipped and fried corn dogs found at the state fair. The extra bonus was that their fries were freshly cooked, hot, crisp... More of a step above your standard fast food french fry than the Cozy Dogs were a step above the fast food corn dog. Other standard small diner and breakfast foods are available on the menu of course, so there may be some other hidden gems available that the standard corn dog tourist wouldn't pick up on. I would go back, but I wouldn't go out of my way to go back (it is just a corn dog after all). So if you happen to be on the road and headed through Springfield, maybe a Cozy Dog would make a nice place to pop in for a pit stop.

  • Kevin D.

This place has atmosphere, and the burgers are good. (They make them flat on a griddle, like Steak n Shake. The corn dogs ("Cozy Dogs") are not that great... the breading is good but the hot dogs themselves taste cheap and bland. The fries are greasy and mushy. Overall - not impressed. Fun to go to once, but that'll be enough for most people.

Dear Yelp, half stars please! Cozy Dog should actually be 3.5 stars, but Im giving them the benefit of the doubt. Sure the decor is sort of cheesy in that Route-66 style, but I liked it for the sense of nostalgia. The people all seemed pretty nice. I asked the kid making the fries what the craziest thing he had battered (which you can buy in 5lb. bags) was and he started giving me an entire list. Onions... breakfast sausage... candy bars... I purposely ordered two cozy dogs so I could eat one normally and one eating the coating and hot dog separately. I agree with the people that say the batter has little flavor. It isnt nearly as sweet as most people are used to and is missing that 'corn' flavor. I did like the texture and the nice crispiness on the outside, though. As for the hot dog, I dug it. It was on the saltier side, which I liked. The fries were just OK. They were sort of limp and greasy as others have noticed, but I think they had a nice 'old-fashioned' flavor. I asked for a lemon(ade) shake-up and they looked at me like I was crazy and just shook their heads. So, guess they dont offer that anymore? Overall this is an entertaining place, you just cant go in with high expectations. The food is about the quality of a concession stand, which isnt necessarily bad. On the bright side, you can buy a postcard with two hugging cozy dogs on it. 50 cents!

Soggy fries and the corn dog had an odd chili powder taste to it. The place has the old rt 66 feel, and The service was good. I've had this place before and remember it being better. I hope this was a one time bad experience, but probably won't go back to see :/

Cozy Dog is shown frequently on The Food Network shows: Food Finds, Top 5 Fried Foods, and the Hot Dog Program. Other sightings include the History Channel and The Travel Channel Upcoming: History Channel: Modern Marvels: Route 66. So I figured I would give it a chance while I was in Springfield. I really was kinda suprised with the interior of the place as it seemed a bit run down/nostalgic however that didnt stop me. I ordered two Cozy dogs and a side or fries. The Cozy dogs were good, however not as they were made out to be on TV. The fries were soggy and overly greasy and just didnt cut it for me. Some might find the interior to be cute and nostalgic however I felt it was more of a dive than anything. I wasnt overly impressed.

The one and only place I get corn dogs. I have never had such a excellent corn dog till I came here. It delicious and very flavorful. I can't eat any other corn dog but Cozy Dog's.

Walking into Cozy Dog was like walking into a Route 66 museum. I actually like places that see how much memorabilia they can fit on the walls. If you aren't a Route 66 nut like myself than this may be a tad bit on the side of overkill. Now on to the Cozy Dogs. I actually found them to be quite delicious. Meat on a stick, how can you go wrong? They didn't seem overly sweet like most corn dogs. It was the right mix of sweetness and crunch in the batter. What I love is they did not taste overly greasy as well. That was left for the fries. I'm not a fan of fries to begin with, but the fries here were probably a pass. Though my mom just loved the little fried spuds. This was definitely worth the trip and the next time I'm in Springfield, I'll be heading over to Cozy Dog.

I don't understand the fuss over this restaurant. The corn dogs are bland, as are the fries. It's not awful, it's just absolutely average.

How can you not love this place? Kitchy diner and a must stop for any tour of Springfield. Delish!!!

I must say I am shocked at some of the bad review's. It's seems some thought they were going to a Michelin star restaurant. We are talkin cozy dogs and fries! If you come here and don't get a cozy dog; you wasted a trip! These dogs are damn good! What is with these reviews of wanting sweet batter? Yuck The batter has the perfect amount of sweetness and the dog is perfectly seasoned. The fries are fresh not frozen! They have the skin on and they are greasy goodness! Put salt and vinegar on them wow that's a match made in heaven! When it comes to a dog dipped in batter deep fried to perfection, Cozy dog cannot be beat.

Top notch fast food for a great price!

Cozy dog = corn dog but don't call it a corn dog here or they'll correct you real fast! Hot, crispy and small in size. Fries = fresh but a bit on the greasy side. It's good with vinegar on it...oooh. My friend had the pork tenderloin sandwich here which was very good as well. Others have mentioned that they have good burgers and other items as well. :) Decor = well lit, tons of memorabilia of diner and Route 66-rich history items, and just adorable weiner-esque stuff. :D Oh and from what I've heard...Filmore (from the movie Cars) is based on Waldmire. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Co…

Disappointed w/the pork tenderloin and the fries. Nothing special. The pork was overly breaded and not homemade by any means. The fries used to be double fried, dark and yummy. But, this day were just ordinary fries. We used to come 70 miles just for the fries and probably won't be doing any more roadtrips. :-(

  • Margie C.

Corn dogs but not like what people are used to. I think they are good but there are better corn dogs around. The dog itself is average and the batter is just there. I do give them credit for cooking it crispy. What you really need to eat here is the fries. Shoestring deliciousness. And delicious with vinegar. Let's face it, you eat here because it's an experience. You can get better food elsewhere but you have to eat here at least once.

Let's start off by saying I love corn dogs. I do. I absolutely love them. Frozen ones, high school baseball game snack stand ones, hospital cafeteria ones, it doesn't matter. While these were some good corn dogs, they don't come anywhere near the quality and taste of A&W's corn dizzles. They are pretty good corn dogs, but the nostalgia of the place and the fact that it is (supposedly) the original makes it worth going. Also, they are not very cheap, so I can't imagine ever going back again. Still...fun to say you went.

  • Samuel F.

We were driving thru Springfield and made a point to stop here because...YES...we saw it on TV. That said, the dogs were good, the fries were a tad on the bitter side (that's weird) but if i know my cooking oils, it would seem it was time to change it...old oil will bitter a fry quicker than Hillary Clinton. Would we stop there again?? Yes. Would we plan a trip? Probably not. It was what it was. Nothing really got me excited about this place. But if you're near there, the dogs were quite tasty.

  • Frank C.

This place fu*kin sucks. Do not go there, do not get a corn dog or a hot dog. My wife and I stopped in Springfield for 3 Man vs Food places and none of them were good. If your from Chicago or the surrounding area and you go try this you will see what I mean. Cafeteria hot dog is what it tasted like.

  • Scotty B.

The birthplace of the corn dog. That alone should bring you in. We get the family special 4 Cozy Dogs and large fries. Just the right amount of food. The place is so good. Diner food at its best.

Triple D stop. Probably made a mistake but not ordering their Cozy Dogs. I had a Dbl Cheese burger, rings and a lemonade. They weren't anything special. The burger was fresh and the patties reminded me of Hi-Boy back in my hometown which is a positive (thin, crispy on the edges and tasty). It's always a problem when you go to a place and don't order what they are known for. I blew this stop (my bad). The place itself is very cool, lots of Route 66 stuff and the staff is great. Would I go back... of course I have to get their specialty the Cozy Dog... two special made corn dogs (don't call them corn dogs) in a special batter using a special tool... see I blew it here! I will be back!

    (4)
  • Bruce R.

I get the whole Route 66 nostalgia thing but, this place has likely seen better days. Regrettably, I am sorry went out of my way to get here based on other Yelp reviews. The corn dogs were average at best and, the pork sandwich was dry. Keep heading down the road.

The corndog was invented here. If you are in the area and are a fan of corndogs, you have to check out this place. The corndog was crispy and tasty. It's a blast from the past and is reasonably priced. I think you will enjoy it.

  • Catherine S.

This might be a Route 66 roadside attraction and a Springfield institution, but the charm escapes me. It fronts to an asphalt parking lot and a busy road. I was expecting something more 'old timey.' And, I hate to say it, but the cozy dogs were ick. They had a very weird flavor. None of us liked them - my kids didn't even take a second bite.

Greatest dogs ever!! We stopped in at lunch time on a trip to Springfield, and it exceeded my expectations. Lots of Rt 66 memorabilia, which is a big part of the experience. They also had Cozy Dog and Rt 66 t-shirts, coffee mugs, key chains, postcards, etc for sale. We both ordered the lunch special with 2 Cozy Dogs-- wow!!! The flavor was truly unique like nothing we'd every had. Fries were dark, old-school with potato skin left on, and tasty and kinda greasy just like you'd expect. Friendly staff, and quick service. We also enjoyed the cherry and vanilla flavors available to sweeten up your soda. We loved the ambience and vintage feel of this joint with the old-time pink and turquoise booths. Great!!

I would like to preface this review with one statement: There is no level of discernment that an accurately rate a corndog, though many would like to make a distinction between a corndog and what the creator of this place would like to call 'cozydog.' I have lived in TN for a long time, where frying anything not nailed down is commonplace, and Chicago, where the city has it's own style of how to eat a hot dog. The batter is very bland and doesn't taste like anything at all really, and my palate is fairly good. The frank itself taste like a steamed ballpark frank, which aren't necessarily bad things, but this place hypes itself from the moment you walk in. Very poorly placed Route 66 decor overwhelms the eye and the writing glorifies the story of how the "cozydog" was created. I think people ran with this idea and made it better. The fries were limp with grease but slightly redeem themselves with the fact that they tastes like potato. In short the place is a glorified concession stand.

The cozy dogs (aka corn dogs) are good, but nothing special. I've had just as good at the carnival.

    (3)

A very homey diner type deliciousness. I loved the corn dogs and fries. Great Route 66 stop! The kids thought it was very cool. It is everything that greasy fried food should be.

  • Don R.

This place is great for the experience. The food is good, but really, they're not re-inventing the wheel. BUT apparently they did invent the corn dog! That's right, the Cozy Dog Drive in is the home of the Cozy Dog...which is really a corn dog but with a marketable name that has withstood the test of time. That's exactly why we always bellow, "Fetch me a Cozy Dog!...What's that?...a Cozy Dog, you know...? Breaded hot dog on a stick...yes, a corn dog! Fetch it!" Regardless of the history of the corn dog (cozy dog), I really do believe this place is its mother. Anyway. Come on in. Stand in line, order a couple of Cozy Dogs (which are freshly dipped), grab a fountain drink, and just enjoy yourself. It's not like visiting the Statue of Liberty, but it is a slice of American nostalgia. Hell, if you want some history in Springfield, you don't have to go far...just go the Lincoln Presidential Museum...

Known as a gem on Route66 and featured in many TV shows such as Man vs. Food, this place exceeded our expectations. I am not a big fan of corn dogs so I tried their hamburgers and fries. They were awesome. The place is filled with classic automobile parts and has a small gift shop inside to buy Route66 memorabilia.

  • Greg P.

Awesome! Best corn...oops I mean Cozy Dog ever. I was at a class in the area and heard of the joint from Man v Food. Had to stop by and give it a whirl. I will defiantly go back, but need to bring my boys. The Cozy dog is extremely good. The batter is almost creamy in taste. And with the fries... perfect. Its an old school diner style stop. Ambiance is just that... I don't know what the other people who negatively comment expect. Its a damn good corn (aka cozy) dog and you will enjoy it. If you don't, different strokes for different folks I guess. Good job Cozy.... I will see you again in the future.

I love corn dogs. And going to the place it was invented was on my list of things to do before I do anything else. The price isn't bad, 4 corn dogs, 1 large fry, $9. My mom and I split this. Um, corn dog, the batter needed sweetness and it was bland. The ones I buy at Wal-Mart are better! The fries were soggy, oily, and bleh. They soaked through the container they were in. The seasoning salt is really needed, and it also good because of the MSG! Yay! The food is definitely 1 star. But the people who were serving were very nice. Yea, read the reviews, skip this place. :(

The Route 66 memorabilia was the best thing about this stop for me. I was disappointed in mushrooms (definitely frozen). My hamburger was just o.k. My husband and I discussed that we made the mistake of not trying the Cozy Dogs that the restaurant is known for. If we travel back through Springfield, we would stop again and try the cozy dogs. Service was fast and pleasant. The restaurant was clean.

They are famous for their corn dogs for a reason ! best corn dog ever had. The memorabilia from route 66 is very neat and cool. It has been on T.V. which is how we found out about this neat little place. We were on our way south from chicago and decided to make our pit stop in springfield and give this place a chance, you should too !

What's not to like about this place?!? It's a Route 66 institution, folks. The Cozy Dogs are good. I must say the fries are just as good--if not better. I ordered a medium fry and the basked was overflowing. If you don't like kitsch and mom & pop diner appeal, go mail in your dinner at one of the chain restaurants down 6th Street or even off I-55. It's great to see the place packed-- people love their Cozy Dogs and Route 66 history.

  • lux m.

A Route 66 institution. We had to stop. We wish we hadn't. Interesting decor, absolutely freaking terrible food. Worst on entire Route 66 roadtrip (and we had some doozies). Overcooked fries, weird chemical taste to anemic burgers, the drinks served in styrofoam cups were tainted with the styrofoam flavor (first time I've ever encountered that) & dodgy overstuffed beef poorboy (...poorboy after eating it). And the "Cozy Dog"? Thank the lord we only ordered one. We left the joint expecting food poisoning, it was that bad. So, stop in for a Route beer, check out the decor and then leg it!

    (1)
  • Josh W.

This place is the bomb....burgers and cozy dogs are off the hook...fresh cut fries with vinegar..I would eat here all the time if I lived closer....

    (5)
  • Jay H.

We had the cozy (corn) dogs and fries. Terrible. Breading on dogs is fine, but sausages are below school lunch room grade. And skin-on fries looked promising, but were limp and flavorless. Despite Route 66 history, the location is a typical suburban strip mall.

  • Jimmie H.

This place is a must see because they think they invented the corn dog. Those of us from Texas know better but I do have to concede that since communication was so bad back then that it's definitely possible for us to come up with them at the state fair and then for them to invent them 3 or 4 years later. Get ready to get some fried food because that's all they have.

    (3)
  • Eric G.

I had to try the place that claims they invented the corn dog. It is a pretty standard corn dog.and cute decor, but not something to write home about. The fries were good and the corn dog was large, but unless you live nearby I would not make a drive just for the Cozy Dog.

When I was pregnant with my first baby, all I craved was corn dogs and Dr Pepper. I wish oh wish we lived in Springfield during my pregnancies because this is truly THE BEST place to get a corn dog. We had seen Cozy Dog on Man v Food and decided to check it out when we were in Springfield for a wedding earlier this year. It did not disappoint. Their breading is perfect; not too sweet and not at all greasy. It's a good quality dog inside and their sides are good, as well. Great food at a great value. Will definitely return next time we are in town.

Great local fast food. Inventors of what many know as the "corn dog"! I lived in Springfield for a very long time and ate here somewhat often. Cozy dogs are great, their fries are some of the best fries I've ever had anywhere. Atmosphere isn't all that wonderful.. they've got some cool decor.. nothing totally stunning. Current building is in nice condition. The old one was falling apart. It used to be paired with an old ice cream-only Dairy Queen. Price is a bit on the high side for what you get. Cozy Dog is a Springfield must-see. In my book Cozy Dog is more important to see than Lincoln stuff.

Best corn dog in Springfield! You already know a corn dog is not healthy so don't expect any different here. It's greasy but good!

Hands down the best corn dogs. Not dark and greasy like others. Fires are home cut and tasty. Deff a good place to eat

  • Lee C.

The "Cozy" corndog is pretty good. It's, you know, a corndog. Nothing too special. Greasy and tasty. Don't care for the chili. The pork tenderloin sandwich looks amazing when it's brought out to you, as the pork itself is two and a half times larger than the bun it sits between. Nothing too amazing about the taste though. The french fries are good if you like hand-cut with the skins on. I do. Nice place to have around.

Stopped here in 2005 during a trip down Rt 66 (Chicago to LA!). It was, quite honestly, THE best meal my wife and I had on the entire trip (not to mention the cheapest). This is a Rt 66 landmark, and rightly so. They've been in (nearly) the same location for 60+ years (the original site is right next door where a Walgreen's currently sits) and they invented the (corn) Cozy Dog. Normally, I'm not a big fan of corn dogs (being lactose-intolerant and all) but I ended up eating 3 1/2 (helped my wife finish hers!) and felt fine, which means (true to form) they make their own breading and it's safe to eat for other dairy enemies. The service is great and the patrons are friendly (everyone asked us if we were the newlyweds with the "Just Married - Rt 66 Chicago to LA" sign on our car and when we agreed, a few people told us old stories about the original location. One woman said she was a waitress there when she was a teenager and took our photo standing next to the "Cozy Couple"). Even if you're not making a Rt 66 run, stop by if you're in the neighborhood and be prepared for the best (corn) Cozy Dog of your life!

delicious dogs, even early in the morning!

I love corn dogs and no, all dogs are not born the same. The batter on a corn dog with the right amount of sweetness, and the degree of crispiness separates the good dogs from the super dogs. The only great corn dog I have had was at Culver's, thanks to their never soggy corn dogs, but that's until I found cozy dog drive in in Springfield. This place is a Route 66 site, and on top of their delicious corn dogs, the place is so unique and cute as hell. It's not easy to find places like this unless you come to a small town like Springfield, so even if you're not a big corn dog fan, stop at Cozy Dog, go inside, and take it all in!

    (4)
  • Jenny z.

Mmmm...greasy good eats. Corn dogs are fantastic, as are the pork sandwiches. Get a big basket of home made fries to share. I miss the old location with the attached Dairy Queen, but it's still cheap as hell. One of my favorite places to stop when I'm in the Springpatch.

    (5)
  • Sherah B.

Since I grew up in Springfield, I may be impartial, but Cozy Dog is literally the place for corn dogs and you really can't have just one. The fries are also good-especially with that delicious artificial cheese sauce! :) I'm also pleased they just featured this place on Man vs. Food. It deserves it!

    (5)
  • Erin H.

Corn dogs seemed like any other corn dog, and according to my dad they were good, but not extraordinary. Chili dogs were small and not too exciting. I had a grilled cheese, which was average. Place is special because of the atmosphere, it is a must for Route 66 travelers. Fun decorations and maps on the walls. Family owned since the 1950s. It was very cheap and decent food.

    (3)
  • Charles W.

How can you make a great corn dog? You can't. A corn dog is a corn dog. They can be good, but they can't be great. I bet if I put fifteen corn dogs in front of you, you couldn't taste the difference between any of them. Then you would get sick because you ate too many corn dogs. One extra star for inventing the corn dog and thus creating the food of choice for the carnival community.

    (4)
  • Matt P.

Good food, good atmosphere. Had the Cozy Dog and while it wasn't the best corn dog I've ever had it was good enough to stop in and have one from the creators.

cool place with ok food. i am not a big fan of hot dogs so the cozy dog isjust ok to me. my family does like the fries. they are not as crispy as some but still good hot. expect to wait at certain timesof the day. they are not open on sunday's. great for kids.

classic route 66 type place, but nothing spectacular about the food.

  • R. C.

Interesting and eclectic decor, entertaining to peruse, while eating the delicious Cozy Dogs (better than most corn dogs, the Cozy Dog coating being less sweet, and generally more crisp). Fried mushrooms are good, onion rings so-so. Fries are rather greasy; but, with a notable potato flavor, they are good overall. Have not tried other items, or the breakfast. Service is quick and friendly. I stop there whenever I am in (or near - only about 5 minutes off I-55) Springfield!

What can I say about this place other than Good Eats! Feast your eyes and your stomach on a piece of Americana by visiting this infamous Historic Route 66 hot spot. Home of the "Cozy Dog"(don't call it a corn dog), this place rocks in the taste, decor, and value dept. The Cozy Dogs , and everything else as a matter of fact, are made to order right in front of you. Every thing we ordered was soooo great, we went back again later during our visit. Don't miss out on the Pork Tenderloin sandwich, This bad boy is H-U-G-E! It;s like a 5-inch flattened, breaded, and fried pork tenderloin under a bun... A must have. This was like the highlight of our time in Springfield! Don't miss it!

  • Blah B.

A dog on a stick here is pretty much a corn dog, but it doesn't taste like one?!! Apparently the guy who opened up this joint was one of the first to introduce it to the market at local festivals etc. The food was very good and it was a nice experience, sadly unless I'm in Springfield again, I won't be coming as often, but I would def. recommended it. Their burgers are delicious!!
