Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

Yuck blah food cute place and great service but if you love Mexican food real authentic stuff avoid it. The chips were even so so.

Pretty quiet for Sunday evening at 5 PM. Good food although a little pricey. The home made guacamole is made table side and is awesome. You pick how spicy you want it to be.

For the life of me I don't understand the bad reviews. The service the food and the atmosphere couldn't be better. My wife and I each ordered chimichangas which were very good. The service staff was on top of us the entire time without being too intrusive during our meal. Our meal arrived quickly and all food was hot and fresh. Highly recommend getting a seed fireside. Highly recommend you ignore the bad reviews and give this place a try

This was my fourth time here. I would have rated this restaurant at a four stars the other times I have been which were all on Wednesday evenings. However, today was terrible! We came at 2:30 in the afternoon and were very disappointed in the food and the service. I had the Vasquez tacos and there was no seasoning and the meat was as tough as shoe leather. I've had these before and they were great. Armando was our server and we had to ask to have drinks refilled and ask for our check after waiting 10 min for each at least. My husband had a steak quesadilla and didn't enjoy it either. Enjoy it on a weeknight for 4 stars, but stay away on Sunday afternoon....

I really wanted to like this place. I love Mexican food, and feel like a good Mexican restaurant is exactly what those strip malls in South Elgin need to be a nice break from the large chains (Red Robin, Chili's, Chipotle, etc.). Unfortunately, Coronado's falls short of expectations. First off, parking is horrible. We had to park in the lot behind Coronado's because there wasn't a single spot to be found. Second, the service was so slow. A meal that should have taken an hour - tops, including conversation - took over 2 hours. Simply due to slow service. Lastly, the food just wasn't good. My first impression, honestly, when I saw that my tortillas were delivered to my table in aluminum foil was "Is this a joke?". No tortilla warmers in what is supposed to be a nicer Mexican restaurant? Fail. I shouldn't see a piece of aluminum foil anywhere when I'm eating my meal. Then the taste of the food is just bland at best. No hint of Latin spices at all. A big disappointment. This place is definitely a joke and I will not return.

Great first time experience here. I would highly recommend Coronado's! We ordered the original guacamole and it was awesome. They made it table side. Our food arrived so quickly after we ordered. Our waitress was so nice and helpful to help me narrow down what to order. Overall, a great experience and I definitely be coming back! The drink specials themselves seemed like something worth coming back for!

After my husband and I saw Fifty Shades of Grey on Valentine's Day, we wanted to find some food. I love Mexican food and our kids always groan when I suggest eating it, so we took advantage of them being at home with the grandparents and set out to find some Mexican food. I didn't even realize the place was here. We were seated right away, beside the fireplace. Which was excellent because it was an extremely cold night and I was frozen solid so I was happy a clam beside the fire. We ordered the guacamole that was made table side, which was very tasty (I'm a new fan of guac). I ordered the braised chicken enchiladas and they were fantastic. My husband ordered a combination plate of some things I can't remember --- and he enjoyed his meal. My only complaint --- there wasn't a napkin in sight and my husband had to go to the hostess in order to get silverware after they brought our food out. Otherwise, I'd definitely stop in again.

Not good, not bad, just "MEH". Being from Texas, I know my Mexican foods. The salsa was pretty bland, fresh but very basic; tomatoes, onion, and cilantro. Ordered chicken fajitas, well seasoned, good but greasy flavor. The atmosphere was colorful but nothing outstanding. They have garage doors that open in one area, however were not being utilized on this particularly beautiful spring day. I can't speak to their margaritas as we did not order any. I might return as I love Mexican foods and there is such a limited selection in Illinois period (unless you want like authentic authentic). The next return maybe with a coupon. I had saved several since this place opened but we never made it to take advantage of them. Yeah the tortillas come in foil but WTF cares, they were warm. Also, parking wasn't THAT hideous. Honestly, walking is good for you people, take everything in stride. ;)
(3)Nichole W.
Meh, I've had better is an accurate statement. The food is just ok here. We have been here three times now and nothing has ever stood out. The service has been pretty bad each time too. Their Margaritas are awesome and sangria wasn't bad, hence the three stars.

After reading tons of 1 & 2 star crappy reviews on here, I was very hesitant to order anything here at all. Perhaps because I do not drink liquor at all which seemed to be a huge complaint for many and most complained about the cost. Well newsflash people, the cost of booze has gone up all over the country and $10 is actually cheap for a margarita in comparison to New York, LA, Florida, etc. I ordered my meal to go from the bar with the manager and I had no difficulties with my order and did not have a log wait for my food at all. Even when I did drink on occasion years ago I never went to a restaurant for the liquor, I always went for the food and I still only go to restaurants for the food. To be fair to all those who complained about the high cost of entrees, I had a coupon for a BOGO up to $10 with a 2 drink purchase requirement. I ordered a tilapia ceviche which was wonderful, perfect amount of lime juice, tomato, onions jalapeno, tomato, avocado & tilapia. This was an appetizer portion for $8.95 which is very cheap for a fish appetizer and there is enough in this portion for 3 meals for me. This was my FREE MEAL. I would go back there just for this, I could eat this every day of the week, that is how amazing this was! I do not remember what the Mexican name was for the other dish I ordered so let me tell you what came in it: It had grilled chicken, steak, pork, chorizo sausage, sliced thin potatoes, green peppers, onions, fresh whole tomatoes which seemed like they were broiled or steamed till pierced, and some seasoning, it came with guacamole piled on top of lettuce, freshly made tortilla chips, salsa, some type of bean concoction, source cream & flour tortillas. I subbed out the flour tortilla for corn tortilla and I skipped the sour cream & subbed pico de gallo. The chicken was fantastic, it was perfectly cooked, & seasoned just right, the chorizo was wonderful as well, a little on the spicy side for my taste buds though, the steak was a little dry, but once I added my pico & some lime juice it tasted great, the pork was shredded, the taste was good I just do not like any meat shredded. The potatoes and onions were great along with the seasoning, not a big fan of tomatoes the way they were made in this dish, the bean concoction was good. This whole dish was only $17.95. If you went anywhere else for this dish it would cost you $29.95 for all this food. There is enough in this meal for 6-7 servings for just me. For my 2 required beverages purchase I chose iced tea without the ice so I would get more tea as I was getting my order to go. I ordered my tea with fresh limes, the tea was great as well. I noticed people complaining about the cost of fajitas, the cost on here is far cheaper then On the Border, Chevy's Fresh Mex and many other Mexican Restaurants. I also saw people complain about the cost of guacamole for $10, perhaps they forgot that a side order of guacamole at Chitpotle is $5.95, and one at Qdoba is even more then that, so $10 for 3 times the amount you would get at any of those places is cheap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Uhhhh hahahahaahahahah really.............. thats all I can say. you call you guys Mexican food?? If you want to go get cheap Mexican food go to taco bell, don't waste your money here way over priced and worse than taco bell. I can sit here naming good Mexican restaurants..ie: in geneva, but i wont i dont even want to waste my time with this disgusting, no flavor, sad, poor excuse for a restaurant, let alone Mexican......booooooooooooooooooooo close your doors now!
(1)IsTacoBellBetter ?.
I measure by three different things in comparison to Taco Bell: DECOR: Coronado is in a shopping plaza near a Jersey Mike's and Sushi restaurant. I have to admit by looking at it I thought it would be a fast food type of restaurant because of the way the building looked and the size of the restaurant, however it is a full restaurant. Inside I was pleasantly surprised as it seemed to really maximize space for a full restaurant and still have a good atmosphere. 1 star for decor. SERVICE: Our waitress was very friendly. She was good about checking on us and the food came quick. I was very satisfied. Another star for service. FOOD: I had ordered the enchiladas combo and got two enchiladas with rice and beans. There also was of course free chips and not one, but two salsas with our meal. One salsa was spicy and the other mild. They were very flavourful and tasted wonderful. The chips were prepared warm and crisp and I love warm tortilla chips! The entree was hot and delicious. I definitely felt like this was more authentic than a chain mexican restaurant such as On the Border. Two stars for delicious food! FINAL VERDICT: Is Taco Bell better? No. While Taco Bell may be cheaper it's not nearly as delicious as Coronado Mexican Kitchen. If you are looking for a full mexican meal that tastes delicious and authentic, give this restaurant a try! I definitely think it's worth the price with the portions given and good service!

Just left there with some colleagues from lunch. Tried it for the second time and dissatisfied once again. Tried the chicken burrito that was bland, under seasoned, and at room temp. A few of us had the same items and all of them were the same. I find it hard to believe the business is even making ends meet. It was noon and only 4 tables were occupied to include ours. I asked for everyone's opinion and all felt it was mediocre at best.

This is my 3rd visit to Corandos. Very simply, they suck! This place reminds me in a lot of ways of the Mexican restaurant which was 2 doors down and went out of business. TRUST THE REVIEWS, CONSISTENT COMPLAINTS MAKE ONE WONDER IF THE OWNER OR MANAGE EVER READ THE REVIEWS. IF THEY DO THEY CLEARLY IGNORE THEM BECAUSE NOTHING HAS CHANGED. SAME COMPLAINTS OVER AND OVER. My first visit was in December a coupon got me through the door. The impression was good. The 2nd time I went to the restaurant, the service was bad, very inattentive. Had to practically tackle the waitress for refills. The waitress apologized and said they were very busy. My observation, they were half full during normal dining hours. Seemed like there was enough staff to handle the customers. 45 minutes for the food to arrive at the table. My food was cold, everyone else in our parties food was not cold, like mine, but it was not hot, warm to hot. I returned my dish to the kitchen. The waitress touched my food to check the temperature. I think instead of making me a fresh plate, it was put in the microwave. The Black Beans were actually re-fried black beans, not traditional black beans like you would expect. But within a minute or 2 my plate was re-delivered. Now to hot to eat, and oh, THE WAITRESS TOUCHED MY FOOD WITH HER FINGER!!!!!! YUCK! When I brought this to her attention, she denied it. I SAW YOU DO IT!!!! I requested that the dish be made fresh. I WAS TOLD NO. So I didn't pay and had a sandwich at home. Oh yea, NO TIP FOR YOU! Balancing the 2 completely different experiences, believing that maybe the waitress and everyone else at the restaurant was having a bad day, I thought I would give it one more try. (Found another coupon). Arrived at the restaurant at 9:07pm. The sign on the door states they are open until 10pm. The hours on the add I got the coupon from say they are open until 10. Yelp says they are open until 10. The doors are locked and all the chairs are up on the table. There is someone in the restaurant, so I knock on the window. A man comes to the door, and says "can I help you?" I think; ARE YOU KIDDING ME, I'M NOT RANDOMLY SHOWING UP AT THE DOORSTEP OF YOUR HOME. I AM HERE TO EAT! I say to him " why are you closed. We planned on coming here for dinner tonight. "I'm very sorry Sir, but it is a very slow night." I say "OK, I would like to eat, not slow anymore." "I'm sorry Sir we are closed." "The sign on you door, right here, says you are open until 10, you add says you are open until 10." "I know , but it is a very slow night." "it's not slow anymore, I'm here to eat. I planned this for half of the day, I'm looking forward to eating Mexican." "I'm sorry, we are closed." "What is your name?" Umberto"."are you the owner? "No" "are you the manager?" "Yes". "what is the owners name?" "Jose", "Jose what?" "Melendez." "Jose Melendez is the owners name?" "Yes" "How can I get a hold of him?" "Come here on Thursday, he will be here on Thursday." "I would like a phone number, I would actually like to speak to him now'" "you can come back on Thursday" "Umberto, AT THIS POINT I MAY NEVER COME BACK." My Daughter says " We would like the phone number please." Umberto Says " Don't you have it on the coupon add?" I say ":Are you kidding me?" "No Sir, you can come on Thursday, He will be here on Thursday." I looked him right in the eye and said " I think you are an idiot." We left. UMBERTO AND JOSE, WONDERING WHY YOU ARE SO SLOW?

I'm quite confused by the poor reviews of this restaurant. My husband and I came in on a whim a few months ago and thought it was quite good, despite the fact that we are pretty picky when it comes to restaurants. We ended up checking the reviews on yelp afterwards and were a little hesitant to return after all the poor reviews. Well, we came back in today, and it was fabulous! The service is polite and fast, and the food was great, especially compared to other Mexican restaurants (my husband had the tinga tacos and I had the carnitas). We went to On The Border a few weeks ago and it didn't even compare. My only complaint is that the water had an almost chlorine-like taste to it, but I had a strawberry lemonade and that was quite good. All in all, if you are hesitant to come in because of the other bad reviews on here, I would ignore them and try it for yourself. We will be returning.

I really like this place! The place we used to go on Fridays closed so we found this and it is now the regular place. The margarita with organic tequila is so good I could easily become and alcoholic! The salsa is goof, the guac is great and the braised pork is to die for! Thanks to Julia and Sydney, or favorite servers!! So happy we found this place!!!
(4)Banu H.
This place rocks, I can't explain the mixed reviews but my experience was fantastic. The guacamole man was a great addition to the restaurant. Makes your guacamole table side to your preference. His little wagon is filled with all the ingredients needed. My red snapper and my husband s Texan fajita was awesome. His came with a side of Mexican corn on the cob. Service was fast and pleasant. Real Mexican gem right in my back yard.

We've been waiting for this place to open since the other 2 restaurants failed before this. All these 1 star reviews almost kept us from coming here. They must have been at a different restaurant because this place was outstanding. Yes, there a few things that aren't 5 star worthy (salsa could be a little better). However it's definitely 4 stars. I gave the extra star to offset the 1 stars as much as I could. Our waiter was super friendly and very attentive. The ambience was nice and the food that we ate was outstanding. I'm not even a huge fan of Mexican food but my wife is and she loved it as well. I ate the Tinga Tacos and wow were they amazing. Pickled red onion was a great touch. My wife had the Monterey tacos and loved it. Margarita was strong and tasty. The blue Mojito was excellent. I'm so glad that this place looks like it's going to succeed where many have failed at this location. It's so close to our house and when the summer comes, it's going to be the perfect place since there's the area that's partially outside.
(5)David N.
Warning do not order the tamales. Took forever to come and tastes terrible. This was probably the worst Mexican restaurant I have ever eaten at. Save your money and just go to Taco Bell it's 1000 better.
(1)Angelique F.
I have been here twice now and each time it was great! Great service, tasty food, nice drinks! I would recommend it! I am also confused by the poor reviews! We plan on being back soon
(5)R I C K Y B O B B Y.
Given the options available in the area for Mexican, I can not think of any reason for people to come here. Not for the $10+ Margaritas. Not for the nearly $10 Guacamole (regardless if they make it at your table or not). Not for the Overpriced entrées. And certainly not for the mediocre customer service. If you are truly in the mood for a nice Mexican dinner, do yourself a favor and take an 8 min drive to Wasco and look up Mexican there. I'm sure you will find a place that will cost the same, but the food and service will be ten times better. Highly unlikely I will go back at this place.
(2)Michelle B.
Ok, I thought I would give this place one more chance. Third time's a charm, right? Not so much! For a Mexican restaurant, this place lacks flavor all around. The salsa is tasteless, the carnitas was dried out and flavorless..... I mean ZERO flavor! $10 for a mediocre margarita? Are you kidding me? The prices are outrageous for the quality of the drinks and food. No garnishments (sour cream, onion, etc) on the entree plates. I tried this place when it first opened a year ago and nothing has changed with improving flavor and quality. The service was good, but it should have been because apparently they are never busy. The place is clean as well, but without good tasting and quality food, this place is never going to make it. Very unfortunate because South Elgin needs more places to eat. I highly DO NOT RECOMMEND this place. Waste of money!!
(1)Dabone T.
My wife and I finally tried out this place last night. We had been hesitant since the reviews we've seen are not so good. Well now that we have gone it seems to us they have earned those reviews. Our food came out in a timely manner which was good. However the prices are very high for the type and quality. I had a shrimp burrito which was huge. Once I looked inside the burrito it was half onions. I enjoy onions but the amount was almost comical. The shrimp were decent quality but there weren't many. Other than the taste of onions there wasn't much flavor beyond that. My wife had shrimp and steak fajitas and again about 60-70% of the platter was onion (no joke). She doesn't enjoy onions so much so once she picked out the meat it appeared that the platter had been untouched. When we left and paid our bill ($50 with tip - no alcohol) we both agreed that it was right to try but we wont be back. It's too bad because we love Mexican food. The two stars are because the waitress was nice. The food was forgettable.
(2)Jonny P.
OUTSTANDING! I had steak fajitas and there was a TON of steak in the plate.... normally at places you get overloaded with onions and peppers, but this was not the case. And it was also very tender and flavorful steak too. My wife got chicken tacos and she loved it too. Service was great, from server Sydney to Manager Umberto coming by to check on us. We will DEFINITELY be back!
(5)Karen B.
I had a taste for Mexican and I wanted to try something new. When we pulled into the parking lot it started to look familiar and my husband said.."We've been here...it was awful...are you sure you wanna go in?" I told him yes lets give it another try. So we went in and were seated right away. We both ordered the carnitas and asked for table side guacamole. As we waited for our food the cart came by with the guy that's makes the guac. He made it exactly how we wanted it. Amazing! Then the food came shortly after...the carnitas were Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm mouth watering! As I bit into a taco I had made with the with the corn tortilla I couldn't believe how much flavor it had...not in a bad way either...Oooooooooooooh so much goodness as it dripped a little down my arm lol. It was amazing. Oh and let me not forget about the staff! we had 2 very attentive servers. I truly wish I could recall their names :-( ...young guys..high school age...very polite...very well versed in the food we were ordering. I am half Mexican and my grandparents are from Aguascalientes and I know good Mexican food...I asked the waiter if the chef was mexican and if so what part is he/she from. They returned and informed me he is from Michoacan. Great too know. Our 6 year wedding anniversary is coming up next week and I am going to suggest to my hubby that we return to celebrate there. Please go and try this. By the way we spoke with the staff and explained we were hesitant about returning since the first time...though a few years back...we had bad service and bad food. The waiter informed me Coronado was new a few months to only a year old and that the previous owners had an Italian restaurant there that flopped. That explains the hesitation when we first arrived. Give it a shot. I'm positive you'll have an awesome experience like we did.
(5)Kristen C.
These bad reviews are ridiculous! One of the best Mexican places I've been to in the area. The table side guac is amazing and the portion size is huge! We were given waters and chips right away without asking. Food came out hot and tasty (I had fajitas) our server was polite and very attentive. No issues at all. I'm also a server, and I can honestly say our all around experience was great. Menu is extensive, as is the drink menu. Didn't partake in a margarita this times but maybe will next time around. We will surely be back. And a bonus, the decor is beautiful!
(5)Jay F.
Coronado Mexican Kitchen in South Elgin is a joke. Pros are clean bathroom, clean restaurant and Guacamole made table side very fresh. Cons: beans made from a can, salsa was flavorless and chips were out of a bag. Enchilada sauce needed garlic, onions, cumin, oregano and some love. Taco meat was tough and needed adobo and a pinch of lime. Apparently there is an up-charge if you order anything with steak on the lunch menu. But, waiter did not explain that. He said he was sorry, but left the more expensive price on our charge slip. Elgin Fresh Market in Elgin has a food area. It is worth the trip, unctuous pork meat, steak tacos and chicken flautas. Their fresh food is always a good bet for Mexican.
(1)Lisa M.
Wow! What a difference from the beginning grand opening. Finally caved in to hubby to try this place again. A+ service from hostess to waiter Juan Carlos, bus boy, etc. I loved the HUGE table side guacamole. We had medium spicy piña. It was awesome. The chips and salsa (complimentary) were yummy. I enjoyed my fajitas and hubby enjoyed his dish. I hope others who tried this place in the beginning (that were disappointed) will give this place another try like we did. They have a great team working together now. Thanks for a wonderful dining experience today. We will be back now-for sure.
(5)Lindsay B.
We had a very pleasant experience at Coronado Mexican Kitchen. We went on a Friday night, and there was no wait for a table which made me a bit nervous. However, we stayed and ended up having a lovely dinner. The chips and salsa arrived right away- I did not brave the hot salsa, but my husband loved it. I ordered the grilled tilapia tacos, which came with tortilla soup. I did not really enjoy the tortilla soup, mostly because it was too spicy for me. My tacos were delicious though, I had not had grilled tilapia tacos before- only fried- and I would definitely get them again. I also had a blueberry margarita- it was fresh and very strong- just the way I like it. Overall, I felt the prices were a bit steep for the level of food- more on the expensive side- but I enjoyed my dinner and would go back again. Service was excellent!

I really wanted to like this place, since the location is convenient. However, I was extremely disappointed. I ordered a frozen margarita, which came unfrozen, so I had to send it back. It was also the most bland margarita I have ever tasted. Let me just say this: I should have known right then this place was going to be bad. If you're going to have a Mexican restaurant, you had better have decent margaritas! The chips they serve are straight out of the bag Tostitos. They didn't even warm them. The salsa is sub par and the guacamole was an even bigger disappointment. There was so much cilantro it covered up the avocado and made it impossible to enjoy. I got chicken tacos which were actually decent, but they served them self-assembly style, and put them on two tiny dessert plates, which made it messy to eat. To top it all off, our meal was about $60. Way too much for food that tastes less Mexican than Chipotle. Simply put, don't waste your money.
(1)Joe J.
I always see people eating at this place and I love Mexican so we decided to give it a try. My girlfriend ordered a frozen margarita which the waiter did not know they had and I ordered a mojito. The drinks took literally longer to come out than the food! Anyway my mojito had literally ice falling out of it and tasted like just lime juice. The guacamole was absolutely horrible, I honesty could not believe how bad it was. It literally was just covered in over seasoned spices that make you cringe, and it was 10 dollars! Keep in mind it am one of the least picky eaters or drinkers I know I usually don't mind when food is over seasoned or a little over cooked but my entree was a chicken dish that was cooked literally to taste like rubber. Overall please stay away and obviously I was very disappointed with this place. I wish I read the reviews on here before I spent 60 dollars on two meals.
(1)Value C.
We go out every Friday and try to find new places. We went to Coronado after receiving their BOGO coupon. Pleasantly surprised after reading the other reviews. Service was perfect, very attentive, food was good. The chicken was so tender and had a great roasted flavor. Generous portions, refill on chips and sauce. They make flavored ice tea to order, several flavors to choose from. No complaints here.
(4)Daniel F.
I was really hoping for a good mexican restaurant. If they are reading these reviews please pay attention. To start, don't make people stand at the hostess table like idiots waiting to be seated with no one around! And please be a tad bit quicker getting the drink orders and the drinks to the table. 10 mins is a bit much. The chips and salsa: their tortillas are bland and the salsa is just plain horrible! Change that!! Appetizers: Guacamole was very good! We also ordered mexican corn on the cob. It was obviously frozen corn. Soggy! I ordered pastor tacos and they were good. The beans that came with them were bad. They were cold and had chunks of hot dogs in them. Although My wife was very happy with her shrimp tacos and her sides. Our friend ordered steak fajitas and they looked awful. I tried them and they were cold like they died in the kitchen waiting to come out. They were also unseasoned and bland. This place has a great atmosphere and has potential! They need to Work on service and they really really need to do something about the salsa!!! Get the food out hot and they may make it. If those changes aren't made. They'll be gone by the end of the year!! The salsa will kill them!!
(2)Michele S.
If I could give less than one star I would. My family and I just left this restaurant. My husband, my 3 yr old son and I walked in and were seated in the section that is kind of like what the patio will be in the Summer (big garage doors and lots of windows) I knew it would be cold so I looked around and then asked if a booth was available to which I was told "not at the moment" even though I could see the empty booth near the bar area. IMHO we were basically seated in back with the other tables that had children at them. I had a taste for skirt steak so I ordered the Asadero... which on their menu said it was skirt steak with green onions and cheese and a guacamole salad. When the meal came, I got skirt steak with fajita style white onions and jalapenos and lettuce on the side with sliced avocado. I asked the waitress if this was right and I thought the menu said green onions and she told me No...this is right. I of course didn't have the menu anymore to show her that I was not illiterate and did read it correctly. Because I am a tad bit anal, I looked up the menu on my phone and sure enough, what I got was not what I ordered. I asked to see the manager and he came over. I told him I was confused because I thought it came with cheese and guacamole and green onions. He said he would check and be right back. When he returned, he told me that the chef is new and that in other restaurants this is how they make this dish. He then offered me a free dessert. UMM....NO! Give me the item that even you agreed wasn't what I ordered for free, not a dessert. I was in shock. On top of that, the waitress was really not attentive and then asked if we wanted dessert. We said no. Only after paying and trying to get out of there as quick as possible, did we realize our son's meal was supposed to come with a free dessert which our waitress didn't even offer us. ABSOLUTELY HORRIBLE. We will never go back ever!

Good atmosphere and table side guacamole is nice but I got really sick from eating their pork burrito. We were there in July of 2014. I would not recommend this place.

Great guacamole! Highly recommend the Piña one. Servers are friendly, courteous, and have a welcoming attitude. Our server, Osvaldo, treated us as if we had been long time friends. The Horchata was refreshing because we are used to the drink being made very sugary, and this one seemed as they made it to order vs from a machine. My fiancé had a burrito with carne asada which he stated was delicious and huge compared to any other burrito he's had before. This place is moderately priced for the amount of quality put into the dishes ingredients. Can't wait to come back for dinner and try the Margaritas!

Guacamole is awesome. I got the combo..Chkn taco and Chili Rellano. Very good and resonable. Staff was kind and friendly.

We live in the area and this was our first time here. We will definitely be back and here's why: Warm fresh homemade chips and salsa! This is free and they will replenish, so pace yourself, you want to save room for the other yummy food they have! We each had a margarita. DH had the mango tango, three frozen in a glass, mango, traditional, and strawberry very good not overpowering. I had the key west that had pineapple and cilantro and orange. This was on the rocks and very tasty, it sneaks up on you, so don't order two! Dinner was excellent. It was super hot (temperature not spice), presented well, with generous portions. DH had the shredded beef enchiladas that he enjoyed. I had a choose your own combination plate. I had a chile relleno (divine!), a shredded beef enchilada(good) and a pork tamale (good). All the items were very mild and tasty served with rice and beans on the side. We watched the table next to us get the table side guacamole and it looked ridiculously awesome! The very polite gentleman explained as he prepared things and customized to your liking. The whole thing is very cool! DH doesn't like guacamole and it's a very large portion, so I have to go back to try this with guacamole fans! They also had 4 differ types to try too! The only reason I rated the beef as "good" as I would like a little more flavor, the things I ordered were mild and I guess maybe I would like a little more flavor. I think this is more related to the ton of chips and salsa I scarfed down with my margarita, that by dinner I was full, curse you yummy warm chips and salsa! So our bill was $45, which I think is on point for what we had. I think the quality is good and the portions are generous. Our server was super fast and friendly. She did a good job too. The place is nicely decorated and very clean. I would recommend Coronado for a nice meal for a date or just a casual "not a burger" dinner.

First off the fresh guacamole was on target, fresh and balanced with the right amount of citrus. The chips are from a bag and the salsa is mediocre at best. Our server messed up three times. Once with the meal order, failed to tell us there was an up charge on the lunch menu when he asked if she wanted steak in her combo (taco, enchilada), and his answer to all was sorry (mind you the place had two additional tables occupied) Just showed no interest in being there, I asked for butter and got what I think was melted Parkay. The rice was bland and dearly needed some love (not to mention cold). The beans from a can!!! :(. I do not have a culinary background but have traveled the world in my 20yrs. in the military (not to mention married to a chef reigning from Puerto Rico). Sadly to say I do not see any longevity in this place making there mark here in South Elgin.

I have been here a couple times now. Their food and drinks are delicious!!! I had the Tinga tacos this time and the Carnitas tacos last time. Both are so tender, with delicious toppings and wonderful sauces. My husband loves mole sauce so he always gets the Santa Fe Enchiladas. He almost licked the plate clean. Their drinks are super yummy also. I've tried their Mango Tango Margarita (3 frozen margaritas blended into one...Original, Strawberry and Mango) and Coronita (Margarita with a small Corona inside). We have taken friends back there since our original visit and we had a great time! Our waiter was a bit clumsy but he made up for it by being super attentive. I highly recommend this restaurant. It's a great "date night" restaurant.

Come on folks! Ignore the negative reviews and give this place a try. We have visited this delightful change of place on two occasions and have left feeling like we had the real deal for our Mexican tastes. I like mine hot and the Borracho chicken breast builds to a perfect level of spiciness for me. If you prefer less heat, I can also recommend the Zarape version of the chicken breast. Both are cooked to a juicy perfection. Others in our parties enjoyed carne Asadero, carne Lomito and Fajita quesadilla. The margaritas are expertly made and generously proportioned. All in all, we can't wait to return with more friends to same more of the delightful creations offered here.

We had a great time excellent drinks and the food was excellent! The outside seating area is great to enjoy drinks on a warm summer night.

We thought we'd try the place even though it was always empty when we drove by. We walked in and about 7 people were standing at the host stand. They started at us and then scattered. That was awkward. They seated us and then walked away. On to the food...The chips and salsa were just ok. Almost like store bought chips that they reheated. I ordered the Monterrey tacos which were chicken and avocado, and the others ordered a burrito, enchiladas and quesadilla. My tacos were just ordinary. The burrito was full of rice and beans, not much else. The other meals were also very mediocre. To top it off at the same time that night those of us who ordered chicken got sick. Most definitely will not be back.

Slow service. My glass if water taste like soap and then when the order arrived it was wrong. Salsa is what gives it 2 stars.

This place deserves much better than it's 3 star rating!! Give it a try. You won't be disappointed.

Went for dinner last night. The restaurant was clean and nicely decorated. We were seated next to the fireplace which was very nice on a cold evening. Service was friendly and attentive. Prices were good for the quantity served. Unfortunately both the chicken enchiladas and steak fajitas were extremely bland. They were completely void of any seasoning or spice. If the food was better if would be 5 stars.

This has been our go to place for Mexican and we went again last night. However, I have to say I was disappointed! I have always LOVED the frozen House Margaritas but last nights was simply not very good....very bland and tasteless compared to how yummy they usually are. I also noticed that there was only one salsa choice brought to the table...they used to bring two, one mild and one hotter version, which when mixed was just perfect for us. The mild version they brought wasn't very good. I ordered my usual, which was the Texan Fajitas....rib eye, grilled shrimp, and yellow peppers, according to the menu. I was lucky if there was 3 ounces of rib eye on that platter and I only found three strips of red pepper, no yellow at all....And a ton of mushy tomatoes. The grilled shrimp however were as good as they always were. Come on Coronado Kitchen! Pick it back up, as there are many of us fans out there who would really love to keep you as our go to Mexican place!!

Salsa and guacamole was fantastic. My drink tasted like cough syrup and my steak tacos were dry and bland. I expected more and had high hopes since it was close. I do still order the guacamole and salsa but get my food from Carminas.

Very disappointed. Tonight we had a taste for Mexican so we thought we would give Coronados a try. Wish we wouldn't have. There were four of us and we each ordered the combo meals -- our food came out luke warm if that. We said something to the waitress, who did not offer an apology, but did say they would make us new dishes. The second time the food was a little hotter, but the rice and beans were still luke warm. Never once an apology or an offer to give us a discount or a free dessert. we will never recommend or come back to this restaurant.

Eh. Trust the reviews. The service is slow, food is bland, and the margaritas were great. This is pretty sad for a Mexican place. We came here on a Sunday evening and the place was pretty empty. Empty apparently does not mean terrific, focused service. The waitress would disappear for bouts at a time and when the food finally arrived we were seriously underwhelmed. The margaritas on the other hand were great! Not sure if its worth it to visit just for the drinks though.

Great food! We've liked everything that we've ordered so far. The mojitos are great as well. Prices are reasonable, and the service has been great. Highly recommended!

I came to this restaurant with a large group of about 25 women. The food was very good. It was very well prepared. I especially thought our server, Anna, was excellent. The prices were fair and the menu is quite large.

I was a little leary about going after reading poor reviews. We went last night with a group of 11. Everyone loved the food. Margarita's were great as was the guacamole. Potions were huge. We will all be going back. Waitress was amazing.

We drive by this place all the time and finally one night decided to try it out. It wasn't quite dinnertime so the place wasn't super busy. We were seated in a booth and boy oh boy was that booth snug. They bring out warm chips and 2 kinds of salsa...mild and hot. The first basket of chips were good. The second basket tasted a little burnt. For dinner, I order the campesino and was expecting tacos. What I got was a mini skillet with the veggies and cheese in it and 2 whole wheat tortillas wrapped in foil. Unexpected but I was willing to give it a try....so I scooped the veggies into one of the tortillas and bit into it. The sweetness of the tortillas overwhelmed the vegetable mix to the point where I just gave up and started eating the veggies straight out of the skillet which was good, but the tortillas had already done me in. My dining companion ordered the combo and wasn't overly impressed with the shredded beef enchilada or beef taco. He did like the chicken enchilada though. Our waiter was very nice and attentive. No issues there. But the food just disappointed us. Not sure if we will give this place another try but you just never know.

I have only carried out from Coronado's so I obviously can't speak about the hostess/wait staff. However the service when picking up our food has always been friendly and the food has always been on time. Regarding the food, we have ordered combination plates, burritos and tacos and everything has been some of the freshest food we have had. The meat is always tender, everything very flavorful including original sauces covering the burritos and salsas as well. The burritos and tacos are huge portions also! Every place has a bad day and you can't please everyone, but we have never been dissatisfied AT ALL with this place (at least 10 carry out orders since Coronados opened).

Great environment, friendly staff good food :-)

Skip it. Completely unimpressed. Food and service are totally unremarkable. Ceviche was scary. Salsa had a weird taste. Server/bartender came by every three minutes to confirm that we were "OK". I got OK when I got back in the car.

1st visit for our family. Was not sure what to expect but REALLY enjoyed food & great service. House margarita was a little weak but price was not. Otherwise we recommend it.

Just left this place and will never go back. My wife ordered the chicken Tortilla soup and it was bland with no spice to it. Chicken was rubbery as well. She took one bite and gave up. I ordered the taco combo. Again the tacos were bland with no spice to them but I was starving and had to eat. House Margherita had plenty of ice and not so much Margherita. Our server wasn't very attentive and only came back once and never asked how the meals were When she came back to clear off the table she finally mentioned the soup to my wife but never asked if she would want something else to eat. Check came and she didn't take off the soup until I asked her to since you could clearly see it wasn't eaten. This place overall is a huge dis appointment and I would recommend to go else where for you're Mexican dinner.

I love a good splurge meal at a Mexican restaurant, however, this was a complete waste of calories! When we were seated there was a couple at a table next to us and within minutes we heard them tell their server they were leaving. They said they would pay for the beers but cancel the food order. The guy at the table looked furious! The girl looked super pissed too. The server said "ok" and pretty much shrugged them off. The couple waited for their drink tab and it never showed up and they stormed off. No manager ever came over and we couldn't tell what happened next. This was not a good sign... Another table by us asked another couple who was leaving "how was it?" And they replied - ehh. Another bad sign... We ordered the Roasted Guacamole. It was so flavorless. We love guacamole, especially fresh. On The Border and Mago's guacamole is 100x better than Corondos. They didn't even ask if we wanted it spicy or anything. It was kinda fresh, I guess we'll give them that. My husband ordered a 3 item combo with a beef burrito, beef taco and chicken quesadilla. The beef was completely unseasoned. No flavor. At all. We tasted each others food bc it was just comical how bad it was. It tasted like hamburger in a tortilla. He said the chicken quesadilla was ok. I had a 2 item combo with a black bean burrito and a cheese/onion enchilada. The waitress laughed when I ordered a black bean burrito. When my plate came out it had a refried bean burrito and when I asked for black beans the manager came out to ask me what I meant... I have ordered black bean burritos at basically every Mexican restaurant I've ever been to. I just like black beans and prefer them to meat. You would have thought I ordered caviar or something super bizarre. The red sauce on the burrito was horrendous. Absolutely tasteless and reminded me of something that would come from a can. The sauce on the enchilada tasted like a watery marinara sauce. I honestly had a hard time eating both items. I was glad my back was to the restaurant bc I'm sure my facial expressions said it all. I hate wasting food and tried to eat as much as I could stand. This was by far the worst meal we have had at a restaurant in a very long time. I feel like its really really hard to screw up Mexican food. So disappointing, we were really hoping this place would work out. Maybe the location is cursed bc the Italian place before it was horrible too.

So, yes this is a new restaurant, and my rating reflects that. We ate there on the 30th and waited a few minutes to be acknowledged at the door. We sat down in the back area, and it was a tad chilly (big garage style doors are drafty). Chips and salsa arrived promptly, and a few minutes later we received our drink orders. We had the house margarita and I believe it was a pomegranate marg. both were very good and large! When food arrived, I was underwhelmed. I had ordered the steak enchiladas, that looked like it had been sitting around a while. The steak was not fresh, and chewed like it had been sitting around in a warming tray since lunchtime. The steak was actually crunchy.! It was supposed to have a creamy sauce on top, which it did - but there was so little, and it had saturated into the shells, that the enchiladas were dry! Yuck!! However, we also ordered the chicken tacos, and they seemed more fresh, and had large chunks of avocado! I give it 2 stars for the enchilada, lack of management walking around and their bar area....what's the deal with all the tables smushed against the window area? Does not look inviting at all!!

I like to try and support neighborhood places that are not chain restaurants but we will not be back here. I ordered one of the combos and asked for double rice instead of rice and beans. That part of my order did not come out right. I also asked for no tomatoes in my tacos and they had tomatoes. I work in the service industry and have a low tolerance for when food comes out incorrect. I don't know if it was the waitress who put it in wrong, food runners who didn't pay attention to what the ticket said or cooks who didn't care. It was a simple request. Our waitress didn't even acknowledge a mistake when she saw my boyfriend had food and I didn't (I sent the order back). It's way over priced too.

Excellent food, ambience and service! From the chips and salsa to the meals, the portions are generous. I decided on the tacos and my friend the fajitas. Both were excellent choices. The atmosphere is also comfortable and inviting. We will definitely be back.

I would first like to say that I LOVE MEXICAN FOOD!! With that said, I was very excited to try out this place as it is close to my house. We went there Saturday for dinner around 6pm, it was not crowded at all. We were seated right away. We were pleased with all the selections to choose from on the menu. My husband ordered a steak salad, and I ordered a 3 item combo platter with shredded beef enchilada, chicken quesadilla, and a beef taco. The beef taco was not authentic, reminded me of taco bell serving with lettuce, tomato, and cheese. It was also really greasy...gross!! I personally like my tacos with cilantro, cheese, and onion. The enchilada and quesadilla were okay, nothing special. My dish did not include any sour cream, had to pay extra for that. We ordered the horchata, and that was good, however after 20 minutes of our glasses being empty, we waited for our waiter to give us a refill and he said they did not have anymore. What restaurant during dinner time will just run out of horchata? We were very upset. They told us it will take an hour for them to make more. Speaking of our waiter, the service was horrible. We waited 20 minutes for him to notice our glasses were empty, and after we were done with our meals, we waited 30 minutes for him to come and check on us and clear our plates. He never came by, we had to flag down another waitress to help us get our waiters attention. My husband was ready to just grab our bill and leave. But it is tradition that we always try the Mexican fried ice cream at a new restaurant we go to. So the waitress took our dessert order and about ten mins later we received our ice-cream. HUGE disappointment, it was not good, and the cornflakes they used as the coating were stale. Now I was very upset... Ten minutes after we were done with our ice cream that we didn't finish, we had to flag another waiter to tell our waiter we want our check. Once we received the check, we paid our waiter and ran out of there. We will never go back there. No excuse for the horrible service we had, especially since the restaurant was not busy at all.

Coronado's just opened in a site previously occupied by failed Italian restaurants . My family was looking forward to a new and hopefully good restaurant. The restaurant was packed but most of the tables had no food on them. It took over an hour for our food to come and it was apparent by the slightly warm temperature it had been sitting in the kitchen for a while. Service was slow because they couldn't handle the volume of customers. Food wasn't worth the wait. My margarita was served warm. Staff was either not trained well or overwhelmed. Didn't see any manager on floor. Had hopes for experiencing a new good restaurant but won't be returning to Coronado's. I do not recommend this restaurant.
