The Avengers had it right about Shawarma - truly AMAZING!!! Wow is pretty much the bulk of what I have to say. I have been coming to this place for a few years. I absolutely love their chicken shawarma plate. That is the holy grail menu item. I really enjoy the fact it is family owned and they really put a lot of effort into customer service and their food. I have tried their beef shawarma plate, hummus, and falafel. I must say they are all so great as well. This authentic, delicious, and healthy food has so much love put into it. I definitely recommend this to anyone looking to try Middle Eastern food or someone who enjoys a great meal.

This review should be a 5 star one. I absolutely love their food, service, and location. A couple of things that turn me off: 1. They are gouging the price of their meals. A Chicken Kabob plate and a small taboule cost me over $12.00. This would be okay, except when you actually look at what you get, half the plate is lettuce, the other half is about a cup or less of basmati rice, and about 5 (or was it 4?) pieces of chicken. The chicken and rice are absolutely delicious and juicy. It's just that for $12 I expect some heavy rice and at least half a dozen if not 7 pieces of chicken. It just feels like I could've bought the entire meal from the grocery store for less than $1.50. Speaking of, I asked how much it would cost to get extra chicken on my plate. Was feeling hungry. They said $1.40 per piece of chicken. I could buy a pound or more of chicken breast for $1.40. And the labor cost is a bit of a non-issue. The owners son is the cook. Kind of frustrating. The only reason I have not complained is that I realize they probably HAVE to cut costs and higher their pricing in order to stay afloat. I noticed they don't have but one non-family employee (mainly just the family). Because the food is awesome, fine. I'll walk away knowing I supported a quality dining establishment from going out of business due to the likes of pita inn. 2. The plate I ordered came with tahini (white sauce) on the salad. Like many other reviewers here, I dislike having sauce put on my plate for me. Especially because I'm allergic to this sauce. So I did not eat the salad. I could've returned it and asked someone to replace the salad for me, but I thought it wouldn't even be worth the effort. Why wait for all that when I'm probably not going to touch the lettuce and the lone tomato slice anyways? I came here for the meat. But I'm the exception, not the rule for this. Still, let the customer decide how to sauce up their food. All in all, I still come here because their food is delicious. But I always leave a tad pissed that I didn't feel like I got a fair deal.

before beginning this review i want to bring up a few issues i have with yelp: 1. There should be a way through either a visual or a number to express the DISTRIBUTION of ratings for any one business. after all, a 3 star review can be 50 reviewers giving 3 stars or 25 giving one and 25 giving 5 stars. this absolutely makes all the difference. and yes we can scroll down and get and idea by reading a variety of reviews but why not make it easier for the reader? 2. There needs to be some form of quantification for what is weighted by each reviewer. some folks give a one star review based on a very specific criteria that is illogical (meal was great/ waitress was not perfect). some give 5 stars based on trying only one item that they loved. subjectivity perhaps cannot be eliminated but lessened. and that ties into my review of gourmet pita. you see, i usually only get one or two items from middle eastern restaurants. and mostly it is a falafal sandwich. so my review is very much weighted towards falafal (and cleanliness and how long the food takes to be prepared and attitude of the employees) and not toward other food items i will never try. gourmet pita is one of many mideast eateries that have opened in the area to try to challenge pita inns dominance. i decided to try a few other places to be open minded despite my inability to find a falafal sandwich that comes close to pita inns perfection. gourmet pita gave a good sized sandwich at a very reasonable price. but i could have used tahini on the side. they over loaded the sandwich with too much of the white sauce. i prefer to pour it on myself. the falafal, alas, was too mushy on the inside and too dark on the outside, a sign to me of incorrect technique. pitas balls are golden outside and perfect inside. hey, it was not bad. and maybe all the other items are amazing. but for falafal i will keep returning to my old standard at crawford and dempster

Not only do they have the best chicken shawarma and falafel I've ever had! But the staff is the most friendly family you will ever meet! The food is always fresh and ready on time. I'm surprised they aren't more popular. They're also great for large orders!

Love the hot sauce in here! Can't get enough of their chicken shawarma sandwich! Everytime I'm in the neighborhood, I always have to stop in! Great family owned place!

This place is legit. Great Middle Eastern fare. The falafel is fantastic. It has that perfect combination of crunchy and soft and very flavorful. The shawarma, beef or chicken, is top notch too. The sandwich is the way to go I think. Put some of their homemade hot sauce on top and you are in a place known as shawarma heaven. They also have a fairly priced lunch plate special that you get a little bit of everything (hummus, kufta, chicken shawarma, etc.) its a great introduction to this place. A family run joint to and they are very friendly and helpful. Gourmet Pita lives up to its name and is an unassuming place with big flavors and ample portions. A great stop if you are in the area or going to the AMC theater in the same plaza.

Tried the beef shawarma and it was awful. The rice was good. So was the bottle of water.

I can never get enough of this place. Family owned , very friendly You always have the family here working and you can tell they care because everything is always awesome. I always get a burger everything on it and it's probably the best burger I've ever had. Always taste the same and everything works so good. The chicken kabob plate is an amazing dinner plate. The hot sauce is he best not to hot. Everything is amazing here. Customer service and good food !

Still coming here and the food is still really good; prices may have been bumped up a dollar or two but totally worth it. Service is great, the staff is friendly, and the place is clean, sans the tray I see sitting out at a table here and there. I noticed some of the other reviews saying that is small: I have no idea what you're talking about but anyone that can look at the pictures and say that it's pretty open here unless they're really slammed at lunch so.....if you think you have been wronged some how...give it another chance.

Amazing quality, and always super fresh. This place is a hidden gem, and the owner is super friendly. The gyro is probably one of the best i've ever had, and everything is grilled to perfection. Check it out!

I love gourmet pita!!! The food is always really tasty and sooooo fresh. They have basmati rice!!!!! :) so much better tasting than white rice imposters ::cough pita inn::. I have never tasted anything bad on their menu. The owners are so adorable and friendly and their sons have always been amazing to us. I always get their veggie combo and love it! I've tried my girlfriends chicken breasts and they are seasoned perfectly and tasty. Best place to stop for lunch in village crossing or when you're craving good middle eastern food done authentically and not just for mass production. Thumbs up !!!

Big fan of meditterean food so wanted to try this out! It's not fair but I always compare places like this to pita inn which I feel is the golden standard of this cuisine. Came in tables were dirty, and inside really had no appeal. I got the lunch special for 7 something. It came with a bunch of stuff including hummus which I liked. The pita were warm and soft. Although the rice and meat were a little dry. The sauces were not spicy or had any flavor :( overall decent meal not worth coming back .

My husband and I were looking for lunch on a weekend and stumbled upon Gourmet Pita. It's unassuming in a strip mall but was busy on the weekend. Their falafel plate is amazing. The falafels had a fair amount of spice and were not dry. The plates had a generous number of them too. After living in the Middle East, I find it difficult to get amazing falafel in the suburbs. I would stop by here again if in the area.

I've been coming here since we moved to the NW side of the city 7 years ago, and I needed a replacement for the quick and cheap falafel sandwiches from Sinbad's on Belmont. I've never been disappointed with anything I've ordered here. I usually skip the sandwich versions and get the platters though, because I've had a few chicken shawarma and falafel sandwiches fall apart on me from all the stuff inside the pita. Their hot sauce is addictive, I always get extra when I get food to go, so I can put it on everything at home! I love the vegetarian platter, but I have been known to steal some of my boyfriend's chicken shawarma when he's not looking. It's very tasty! I love their baba ghanoush, and the lentil soup is great. I have to admit, I've never been inclined to try the pizza or burgers, though. The owners are very sweet, the man at the register once told me I reminded him of his daughter (although I'm not middle eastern!). My orders have always spot on and the food has always been fresh. Sometimes I ask for more salad and less rice, to cut the carbs a bit and they have no problem with that (the rice is really good though, I'd eat it all if it was there!). For those who have eaten at Pita Inn, yes, they are pretty much the gold standard for comparison around here, and I do occasionally make the trek over to Dempster for it, but honestly, I'm very happy I don't have to go that far for really good food when I have a falafel craving, and I like supporting a local business!

  • Kenneth C.

Hands down the best middle eastern food on the Northside! Everything is made fresh to order and tastes every bit authentic. My family orders the gourmet plate and we all share it with a small side of hummus. I used to eat an entire plate of chicken kabob myself! Cost is reasonable. If you are heading to Dick's Sporting Goods or Bed Bath & Beyond, stop by this place for some delicious food!

Although I think getting to and from Skokie is hell in a hand basket and I will probably never go there again, I LOVED this place. Great food, large quantities, good prices, and overall a good experience. Great place to grab a quick bite and definitely worth a visit...only if you're local or in the area. ...damn Skokie. ;)

No thank you, I will pass. Came here for lunch after seeing the reviews and was highly disappointed. This place is small in size and flavor. The space is not clean and neither are the tables. The platter is nothing to brag about and offers little meat for the price. The chicken shawarma was flavorless and cold. The hot sauce is mediocre and watery. The falafel was hard as a rock. Definitely not good food. There are so many better options if you seek this type of food.

Tasty food at great prices! I went to Gourmet Pita for the first time today & it did not disappoint! I ordered the Falafel sandwich with fries and it was very tasty! The falafel was fresh & crispy and the fries were not soggy. The price was very reasonable. The only thing I would do differently is order my sandwich without onions because I don't like raw onions.

I can't figure out how they make the pita crunchy. It was great! The Gyro sandwich and a drink was 7.00, and I think that is cheap these days. The little lady, who is the owner, I think, is so sweet and nice and genuine. Was very greatful for my business. I'll definitely go back when I'm in the Village Crossing area again!

In terms of Chicago Mediterranean, this is my very favorite place to go. My family and I have been coming to the Gourmet Pita for years now and the owners always remember us, are always happy to see us, and are just so friendly. I give the service five stars and, my personal menu favorite, the Chicken Shawarma sandwich gets five stars in my book as well. I would give the restaurant five stars overall but, despite my love for it, the options are just a bit too limited. I'll be sad when I won't be able to stop in for a bite every now and again once I go away for school. I really hope to see that business picks up for this little Skokie gem as time passes.

I go to this place every other week. their chicken burgers are great. made with ground chicken breast. food has a great taste and their seasoned fries are great with their hot sauce. the falafel sandwich, shawrma sandwich and lentil soup are all delicious too. prices are not too bad either

I eat here at least 4-5 times a month. Food is always good and most important fresh! Its a family owned, so they really put their heart and sole into it. They are always passionate about you enjoying your food and making sure to always give you something extra hoping you'll come back again. Their chicken kabob is great, hummus, jerusalem salad, baba ganush... are a couple of my favorites. Great place to go for lunch or to cater from.

I've been to Gourmet Pita probably three times. Each time I've been there, I was the only person in there. In fact, I think it's pretty slow, as I'm around the area often and never see anyone in there. The food is decent. They use basmati rice, which is a nice change from the heavy rice served at Pita Inn. The shishkabob is pretty good, but could be a little softer. I usually get the beef shawarma, which is fine, or beef kabob, which I like and I'll order again. The hummus is great, and I don't really care for the tabouli - I've had tabouli from just about everywhere, and it really lacked flavor. Salt, Lemon maybe? Anyway, it's not a place I'd have a taste for.. but If I was driving around the mall, and had a taste for middle eastern food, I'd go for a quick bite.

The food here is delicious! The establishment is family owned, everyone is very friendly. I have had almost everything on the menu, except the pizza (I eat here almost everyday for lunch) and have yet to be disappointed! Their hummus & felafel are the best I have ever had. Their chicken is well seasoned and juicy! Everything tastes fresh and home made. Prices are very reasonable ($7 lunch special). I love finding fresh options in a sea of fried fast food. I would definitely recommend this place!

No one in my family liked their food very much. It did seem clean and fresh, but the flavor was just not what we expected. Also, the portions were small.

I work down the way from Gourmet Pita and I love to go here for a quick lunch. I have probably eaten here at least 12 times in the last year. I usually get the Chicken Kabob which is AMAZING! Tasty and filling.(Large portions) They also have their own baklava which is a delicious treat! The guys who work there are always SUPER friendly also! If you are in Skokie this is a great place to eat!

I LOVE, LOVE, love this place! They have the best chicken shawarma and falafel I have ever had. It's easy to miss, location wise ~ in a strip mall ~ and it's not fancy~ but seek it out~ the food is great!

Great lunch specials: Lamb and Chicken are the only zabiha options. I decided to go with all chicken and I was very happily surprised, Chicken was seasoned perfectly. It was a pleasure from beginning bite to the end. My wife and daughter enjoyed the lamb kabobs. Tahini and hot sauce tasted homemade. If you're a garlic lover like me, the garlic sauce from gourmet pita was delicious!

I love their FALAFEL! That's the only reason I go to GP&P. Their falafels are very flavorful and cooked to perfection (crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside). YUM!

I really don't like the word "gourmet." For me, it conjures up things like tomato aspic, ladies clubs, and retro pretense, and really horrible-looking food from the magazine of the same name back in the '60's. But it was enough to catch my eye and get me into this place. The other downside of a food business using in it's name is setting up higher expectations. I mean, what could be "gourmet" about a pita place? Well, this little spot is really nice, and it was a convenient diversion when I was reluctantly out in one of these mall areas right before Christmas. The room is inviting and spacious with self-service and numbers they call when ready. The menu is the standard Middle-Eastern casual with pitas, appetizers, dinner plates and desserts. I chose the "lunch plate special", which was an assortment: lots of chicken shawirma, a small piece of steak, kefta kebab and falafil, with salad, hummous and warm pita bread. All for $6.75. You can also get a Philly Steak Sandwich, or Gyros and fries. There was a bit of a wait on the food. They made me hot tea by request (I was disappointed it was Lipton and not mint tea, but no biggie.) The food was very fresh, hot and delicious. And the guys behind the counter were as friendly as your neighbors or friends. So I found it a pleasant little respite from the Survivor-esque mall traffic. I never did figure out what was gourmet, but that's irrelevant. Final comment: I'm waiting for a Middle-Eastern Ray Kroc to populate the U.S. and every exit ramp in every state with "McPita's", so I can get this food wherever I go (a Pita/Pit stop.) All the menus from these places are already identical. All they would have to do is franchise, change their names, and come up with a clown.

As someone else stated the chicken and lamb are the only zabiha options...so we had chicken. Chicken sandwich tasted fresh and delicious and the chicken shawarma sandwich + plate were delicious. The chicken tasted excellent and the tahini sauce was so good. The owner is really friendly too. Oh and they have San Pellegrino...which is awesome.

AmaZing. I love their falafel , rice, hummus, kabobs, pita... Yum! Everything tastes fresh and has a lot of flavor. The workers are always super friendly & hook you up with extra sauces to make sure you're happy. The portions are great for the price, and one order usually makes up two meals. Gourmet Pita is a great place to come for authentic Middle Eastern food.

This place is a husband/wife and son owned restaurant that serves the BEST Mediterranean Food my family and I have ever eaten! From the steak or chicken kabob, to the beef or chicken shawarma, to the falafel, baba ghanoush and the basmati rice rice...it's all delicious!!! When I have a family party, I ALWAYS cater food from here because everyone enjoys the food. I always order extra food because everyone ends up wanting to take leftovers home. I sometimes cater food just for my family so we have a weeks worth of left overs because we live 10 miles away and can't have enough of their food. Thank you Gourmet Pita for feeding my family and friends and making my life easier!

I've been here twice and both times I've left content. There is really nothing that is stellar but I guess it does the job. I thought it was weird that they ask for tip when you bus your own table, get your own drink, and even your own napkins and silverware. The restaurant does not have a friendly vibe. They could definitely use some music or something. It definitely feels cold both temperature and ambiance wise. If I'm in the neighborhood and I'm hungry I would probably go again but it is definitely not a place that I will go out of my way for. I had the lamb burger which was delicious, and their hummus was quite yummy as well.

  • Peach B.

First time in here today. I really enjoyed their fries BUT their pizza tasted funny in a bad way. I ordered a sausage and literally had one sausage on a slice. The sausage tasted powdery. The guy cooking touched everything with his bare hands. EVERYTHING. No one wore gloves. The workers are friendly but I don't think I'll be coming back.

Love this place. The chicken kabob is my favorite, but everything there is good. I've never had any issues with their portion size. The men that work there are always friendly. And they have homemade baklava!!

When hunger strikes you'll do anything. This is one of those things. i wasn't happy with my falafel sandwich at all, the taste was off and the falafel just wasn't good at all. It didn't help that I saw my hummus being scooped out of a large painter-style bucket either. Why the extra star? I let them know I wasn't happy with it and they tried (unsuccessfully) to fix it for me without argument. Thanks Guys, you'll never see me again though.

Great falafel pita that was so cheap I was worried it wouldn't be enough food for a meal. Their falafel is better than most locations I've tried and the pita ended up being enough for two meals. This is a much cheaper option than naf naf. I will be returning regularly.

Gourmet pita and pizza is a wonderful break in the usual food offerings found in this mall and area in general. I want to be clear that my enthusiasm for this place is for the Mediterranean food and not pizza, which is passable but not anything I would praise or go out of my way to get. I'm happy to see more Mediterranean food offerings and restaurants popping up and this place is a great addition. First, the tabouli is not as good as some I've had. Nor is this my favorite place. But it is pretty good food at a reasonable price. The menu is adorned with fast food offerings that won't subtract years from your life or add inches to your waistline. Mediterranean food by and large is very healthy and good for you/us/them. Sometimes I want to pull my eyes out at the ubiquitousness of American food. Cheese sticks, french fries and onion rings do not need to be on every menu! Thank God! The hummus is great, especially with a drop of lemon. The lamb and beef selections are always lean and tender. While chicken can sometimes be just chicken, the way it is prepared with spices here is uncommonly good. Never overcooked and always flavorful. In short, everything at this place is good if not always great. Don't be distracted or put off by the less than luxurious decor and miss a good meal. Besides, I haven't been to a Mediterranean restaurant of this class that put much effort into the ambience of the place.

I decided to try this place when Naf Nat Grill was closed, bad idea!! The restaurant is dirty and the chicken shawarma is dry and tasteless. I had 2 bites and threw it away. Naf Naf Grill down the street is 10 times better.

  • Jamie S.

Not the best food I've ever had and I certainly wouldn't go out of my way to get it, but if you are shopping in the mall and have a craving for middle eastern food, then I guess it will suffice. Their gyro is decent but it's not the kind you expect, being sliced off the giant rotating cone... No...it's actually those premade thick sliced pieces they fry up in a pan, then throw onto a prepackaged pita. The guy making the food looked dirty and greasy and the kitchen didn't look very clean. I was NOT impressed.

It hurts to give this establishment 1 star because their falafel and lentil soup are great. However, I've given them three tries and will not go back after mistakes were made all three times I've gone in. The first was a piece of my order left out, and the last two were monetary mistakes. Three strikes, you're out! I can forgive forgotten food, it happens. And the second time I was given the wrong change. I let it slide. This third time wasn't as simple. Unfortunately I used my debit card and was charged $70.20 instead of $7.20. Um, that's a HUGE difference!! The cashier corrected the mistake by giving me back the difference in cash. Fine. When I left the store, I was then chased down by the cashier in the parking lot (she knocked on my window, scaring the crap out of me) and asked to come back in and see the owner. And... I had to wait in line to do so. Gee, thanks. I then got into a frustrating debate with the owner as she wanted the cash back as she claimed she had canceled the incorrect transaction and recharged my credit card $7.20 automatically (without telling me). I wanted to sign a receipt that said $-70.20 was going back to my debit card. But she insisted that no, she canceled the charge. Well. No. She did not cancel the charge. I am now jumping though hurdles at my bank. It's a mess. That's what I get for being nice -- I should have taken the $63 and not given them the courtesy of going back inside. The real reason I'm writing this is as a consumer, I want others to be on alert. If this happened to me both times I visited this restaurant, I encourage everyone else to check their receipts, change, and/or card statements to make sure you are correctly charged, especially since you are NOT given a detailed receipt with your order!!

Yummo! Try the vegetarian plate and gourmet plate. They give you a sample of everything. Or the chicken shawirma sandwich is also great, and the lentil soup and baba ganouj are both excellent. Actually, everything I've ever had there has been delicious! And I think the owners are very pleasant and welcoming.

A great place for cheap Mediterranean food. The falafel there is very good and they give you a order of 6 with a load of rice and salad on a plate. The pitas aren't the best, but still they are good. What wins me over most of the time in their hot sauce, it is outstanding! It just has a great flavor and good amount of heat. The shawarma is pretty good there as well. Overall, a solid place to go if you get a craving for Mediterranean food.

Between Bed, Bath & Beyond and Payless Shoes. Its a fast food joint serving Middle Eastern and American food. They've got pizza's and by the slice, burgers, gyros, Philly, kabobs, Hummus and shwarma! For (fast food) M.E. food, its good and prices are very reasonable. I wouldn't go out of my way to get it, but if I were in the area, and needed an "M.E. Fix" I'd stop here. Their hot sauce is good, I like mixing it with the hummus, I think it may be their own mix. No sodas?? not sure. They've got water, flavors of Arizona and Martinelli's Apple cider! Sometimes it can be a bit cool inside, might keep your jacket on. The staff keeps an eye on the tables, so they're straightened and cleaned often.

I've worked across the street now for a year. I've always steered clear of this place because I have severe distrust in a place that serves both falafel and pizza, gyros & french fries. However, my boss was treating me to lunch, so I tried out Gourmet Pita. I wanted to like this place, it would be great (closer and less busy) alternative to Pita inn for lunch. It just isn't as good, though. I ordered a small hummus and a shish kabob sandwich. The hummus was ok...but had an overwhelming amount of paprika. I was impressed with the size of the portion for the label (small) and price (2.65). The Shish Kabob sandwich I ended up eating just the meat. It was cooked well and tender but with two chunks of hard, flavorless tomato and a handful of iceburg lettuce. The pita was soggy and the sauce was SO THICK. I agree with the other reviewer that it seemed like sour cream. I scraped it off the meat and dunked it in the hot sauce which salvaged it.....but I wouldn't really pay for this again. Add to it that I had to wait probably nearly 12-15minutes for my order when I was one of two people in the place for lunch..... I'm giving them 3 stars because I'll probably go back to try the falafel and everyone seems to like it, I feel like maybe I went on a bad day?

Gourmet Pita is wonderful! People try and compare this place to Pita Inn, there is none. P.I. rests on its laurels and they have seen better days. Gourmet Pita has the best falafel I have ever tasted. It is always fresh, warm and never ever over cooked or greasy. All of the lamb dishes are tender, moist and juicy, never dry or over cooked. Their rice as another yelper mentioned is basmati and delish...... The folks that work there are nice and friendly and enjoy what they do. It shows in the great food they serve. I would suggest anyone in the Skokie area visit Gourmet Pita.

I had gone here many years back and I think I just got a slice of mediocre pizza and wrote them off. Again, I have this disease that forces me to get the pizza in hopes of it being good even when all of the signs point to the contrary. Fast forward to recently and I was back at village crossing and decided to stop in for a falafel sandwich. This time the only regret I had was that I didn't order half the menu. The sandwich overall was rather plain with just falafel, tomato and lettuce, with the sauces on the side. After the first bite caused a party in my mouth, I knew there was nothing plain about it. This tiny joint in the burbs has unbelievable falafel. It was crisp on the outside, soft, moist and almost fluffy on the inside and spiced well too! Who knew a random joint in a strip mall was capable of this!

I really like the kabobs here, once I tried them, I haven't tried anything else. Casual lunch, tasty, moist meat!

Not disappointed but it could be better. After some shopping, my sister and I decided to grab some lunch and decided to come here. We were pretty ravenous, including my 4 year old niece. I had the chicken shawarma, and an order of hummus. My sister had the lamb burger and my niece had the pizza. While we waited for our order, my niece pretty much devoured the hummus-- it was quite tasty and passed my hummus test. I was pretty content with my sandwich but it was falling apart-- I'm a pretty messy eater but this was just beyond. My sister enjoyed her lamb burger and the rice. We both decided that this place was ok but had potential to be better. The food was fairly good but of course we have had better. We both agreed that the ambiance can use some work. It wasn't very welcoming-- just a place to walk in, eat and get out. If I am in the neighborhood again, I wouldn't necessarily rule out this place.

Best.Falafel.Ever. My second time there in a year. Don't get up to Skokie from the city often, but make a point to get some falafel there. It is made to order, arrives piping hot, crisp and crunchy outside, steamy soft, nutty texture inside. Delightful all by itself. Needs no dressing up, no hiding in a pita pocket. Mmmmmmmm!

This place was awesome. I thought the food was delicious (and my wife and mother-in-law both felt the same). It took a while to get the food but it came presented nicely and we had absolutely nothing to complain about with the food. The place is family run and the owner seemed nice (as did his son). The place was clean and well equipped. We did feel that the place could have more personality (like the Pita Inn) that some others have reviewed in which they play traditional music and have more "traditional" decorative touches. However, otherwise there is really nothing that would make me not recommend this place or recommend some other place (like Pita Inn) over this one... BTW, we had the baclava as well as the hassida desserts and both were off the charts succulent... I highly recommend this place if you are in the area...

I know Middle Eastern food isn't usually known for this, but this place makes one of the BEST FRENCH FRIES I've ever tasted. They don't put any special seasonings on it and it's not shaped any special way. It is simply the way the French fry is coated. It seems to have a thin crisp layer of batter covering the fry so when you bite into it, it is extra crispy, and the best part is that is stays crispy for a long time. You don't even need ketchup for these. Instead of buying overpriced popcorn in the movie theater next door, I come here to order their fries and sneak it into the theater. Once you've had these fries, you never want to go back to eating just any ordinary uncoated "naked" French fry they serve at the typical fast food joints or McDonalds. The owners at this restaurant are very friendly as well. Thanks, Gourmet Pita, for serving our community!

The absolute best for authentic Middle Eastern food! Always fresh and flavorful. Good value, too. I'm picky about where I eat and this place is always on point.

I don't think this place has pizza anymore. Well besides that. This is the first place I tried falafel. I ended up getting a falafel plate. It was delicious. I remember it came with rice, salad, and 6 huge falafel balls. Everytime I'm in the area I try and stop by for their lunch special for around $7. You get a variety of meats, rice, salad, and hummus on the side!!! Their hot sauce is very tasty! I love their food! This place got me hooked!

This is a very good middle eastern restaurant. The food is great and the prices are right. I have eaten mid east food all over the world and this restaurant compares to the best places. Everything is fresh and home made. The sauces are perfect, the Hummus is perfect, even the pickled vegetable served on the side are just right. exactly the way it should be. The Kifta kabob is perfect , i cannot say enough good things about the place. The family that runs this place seem to take it as a matter of pride to serve good food, and that is obvious in the experience of eating there. I have been eating here for a couple of years now - and intend to keep coming back.

Admittedly I would have never entered this place but my husband is a die-hard lover of shawarmas and basically tries every place that sells them. I have to say I was happily surprised, the food is fantastic, affordable and plentiful! I particularly loved the falafel, but everything we tried including the desserts was tasty and authentic. Will go back again often from now on. Don't be put off by the looks because the food is truly great!

I don't think I can say anything that hasn't already been said. This place is awesome. Granted, I'm a vegetarian and can only rave about a small portion of the menu, but it is certainly a tasty portion. I fantasize about their spicy sauce. Unfortunately, even though each entree is supposed to come with sauce, I often have to ask for it. Maybe they don't think I look like the spicy type.

We started getting our Mediterranean food from here instead of Pita Inn. It's fresher and tastier.

My wife is from Iraq so we're always on the lookout for good, authentic middle eastern food. This place is really good, and reasonably priced. I also like how it's a family sort of operation. My fav is the chicken shawarma, and their baba ganoush is the best. I've had others but I really like how they make it here. Oh, and the dolma is pretty good too. Just for kicks, I tried Pita Inn in once and it was ok, but I thought it tasted like a chain while Gourmet Pita seemed more authentic. Our family eats here on the regular and we love it.

This is difficult. I live nearby and really tried hard to like this place but it just doesn't make the cut. I came, in part, because other reviews had compared this place to Pita Inn. Sorry yelpers, but this joint falls well short. I ordered the beef shwarma, beef kifka kabob and the falafel sandwich. All staples at middle eastern restaurants. The shwarma was bland, greasy and utterly tasteless. It seemed like they had cut up some roast beef, sprinkled some salt on it and threw it in some pan with a huge amount of oil. It did however, have slightly more flavor than the kifka kabob. It's a bad sign when all you can taste in a kabob are the grill marks. The falafel is decent, but you can get average falafel in dozens of places. Even the rice was greasy and bereft of flavor. I don't what else to say. A complete disappointment. Unfortunately, my advice to you dear yelpers is to make the drive to Pita Inn and avoid this place.

I've tried dinner here twice, both times take out and I really liked it. I like the fact that they are family owned & operated and I've never had any issues with missing food or money issues. Very friendly and fast which are important to me, but mostly the food - it's great quality and made fresh.

There is not a bad thing on the menu! The staff there are wonderful people who really seem to enjoy interacting with their customers. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone looking for a great meal at a reasonable price.

I wish it weren't in a strip mall, but this place has - in my opinion - the best tabbouleh salad in town. Good food and good prices. They also have "American" items like cheeseburgers, for those who don't want Middle Eastern. Very friendly owners. A friendly, lower-key alternative to Pita Inn.

I freakin love this place. like, i have dreams about it and have to go the next day to get my fix. their hot sauce is perfect. i think i'm going to ask if i can buy some to bring home next time i go. i've never had anything like it. all i ever get is the beef schwarma sandwich, but when i go with people, we do sample eachother's plates, and i have NEVER tried anything other than amazing here...sooooooo good!

I never thought i'd find a great Middle Eastern place in a shopping center in Skokie, but I go here every time im in the area. The biggest thing that won me over was the falafel. They use some sort of aromatic spice in it (cinnamon or clove?) and it's just enough to make it subtle and yummy. I usually get the vegetarian plate, which has falafel, jerusalem salad, baba ganoush, hummus, and pita. It only has a little bit of rice, which is nice cause at other places the vegetarian dish doesn't have many vegetables and is overflowing with rice. Their yellow lentil soup is also very good and they have a really good homemade hot sauce that you can ask for. The prices are good, as the food is quite filling. My bill is usually 10 or 11 dollars with a drink. Gourmet Pita is worth going to en lieu of the surrounding Paneras Breads and Corner Bakeries.

comparable to pita inn, but a little more expensive imo. however, i think they're a little more friendly since it's a smaller shop, and they're trying to win more business. the dessert display looks tasty, though i've never tried.

Well I gave this place another shot as I promised. I wanted to give their falafel a try The results were the same from the last time. The same person was working behind the counter and he was really friendly, but my falafel sandwich was rather disappointing and rather bland. I am terribly sorry gourmet pita but I am going to have to write you off. You guys are just not my cup of tea!

Love this place for quick middle Eastern food. It's fast and easy and good. Family owned. Try the groumet dinner plate, the price is right and you get a little bit of everything. Oh and don't pass up the the hot sauce.

I'm drive by Gourmet Pita & Pizza quite often, but last night was the first time I came by to try it. I would have to say, my overall experience was average. My meal was OK, but I thought a bit overpriced...especially considering I was eating on a Styrofoam plate using plastic utensils. I tried the combo plate (falaffal, chicken, steak, and kabob). The Baklava was very good...

Gourmet Pita has some of my favorite falafel I've ever tasted! Their falafel sandwich is big and reasonably priced, and the staff are always friendly and fast. Every Gourmet Pita experience I've had has been great, and, when I was working long nights and weekends at my day job, it was always an inviting atmosphere to go for a break in the action. I have nothing but fondness for this place. Top-notch, recommended without reservation.

Horrible food! This can't even be considered middle eastern. My wife ordered the falafel plate and It came with some crappy rice, a giant bed of iceberg lettuce, half a tomato and to top it off a quarter cup of SOUR CREAM! I mean seriously, who puts sour cream on falafel? We eat falafel all over the city about once a week and we have never had such a problem or been served SOUR CREAM! The pita was not fresh, the falafel was questionable and my wife saw one of the cooks using an old sour cream container to pour water into the rice. My wife is vegan and so when I saw falafel on the window, along with quite a few patrons inside, we figured we would give it a try. Bad idea. She wound up getting sick from the SOUR CREAM! My shish kabob sandwich was barely any better. There were 3 pieces of meat inside the pita which was stuffed with lettuce, a slice of tomato and completely coated with SOUR CREAM! We each took about 2 bites before we were so disgusted that we threw it all out and left. I do not recommend this place to anyone. This is the least gourmet meal I have ever had. ZERO STARS!

I had the chicken shwarma. The pita was good but my only complaint was a little too much tarini sauce.

people of old town! i have found nabil samkari! previous owner of meditteranean house in the 70's, 1000 nights cafe, old jerusalem, open sesame, and desert rose cafe. i am sure their are more but he is found at last! this restaurant is amazing. family owned the place is ran by mr.samkari himself, his son and family. the place is great for familys, couples and just your average lunch breaks. they serve thier homemade (shutah) hot sauce, which is good on almost everthing. i was so excited to find mr.samkari still working hard at almost age 60. his family is great and they really know how to treat customers. they just remodeled it seems a little bit. guys i have been spreading the word about this place cause the service and food is excellent. they are such nice people. the falafil is phenominal, baba ganouj is to die for and the shawirma comes in chicken and beef! there chicken is halal and everything is sooo fresh! i love this place and i hope everyone who reads this gives this place a chance! try the food it's great they even have american food to. my brother loves there gyros sandwich. the gourmet dinner is a steal, a combo of three types of beef chicken falafil, rice, salad, pita all for like $8.00!! that's alost the price of cigs now. neway i gotta run, hope you take the time and effort to drive over to the village crossing in skokie to try this place out. you wont regret it and you'll probably become a regular like me! this place is a must here's their number (847) 933-9211.
