As a person that lives by the mantra "go big or go home", I can confidently say that no matter how indulgent you are feeling, you should not drink a large iced Aztec mocha. Although the first sip of cool, smooth, cinnamon chocolate deliciousness prompted me to believe I could drink a gallon of this miracle elixir, it is gluttonous to take down the monster brew. Next time I would definitely opt for a smaller size but with all said and done, I regret nothing. For $9.79, I ordered both the ginormous iced mocha and a tomato, pesto, parm quiche that was a perfect, teeny buttery delight. There is an attention to detail and thoughtful touches (such as offering both coconut and rice milk among traditional creamers), which truly set Arcedium apart from other spots. The staff was friendly and the male barista did a great job of calling out drinks loud enough to hear over the constant hum of the crowded shop. I love how this spot has a coffee bar...maybe that just the drinker in me, but I usually opt to belly up there and savor my beverage while tending to my business. Today, I sat at a table with a friend and had an equally pleasant experience. This place is hopping, but do not be discouraged, I easily crept on a table that was leaving and nabbed the spot. My only criticism would be that maybe they could have more two person tables, as most were for four people, although only occupied by two, which could possibly create opportunity for more people to stay and enjoy their beverages and the atmosphere. Their menu of salads and paninis intrigued me, and I will be back again and again to sample different beverages and food items alike.

Pretty great coffee and tea selections. Their ham egg and cheese sandwiches on a bagel are delish -- seriously so good. Nice atmosphere inside, friendly staff, decent food selection. I had a chocolate croissant that was awesome and I was told are fresh each day from Cocoa Bean. They also offer panini sandwiches and salads if you need lunch! I will say this place can take a while to get things made sometimes. I've found myself waiting 20 minutes on a Saturday, though usually its less than 10 on weekdays. Overall, it's within walking distance from work and a nice spot to visit on weekday mornings!

I feel like a bit of a curmudgeon only giving 2 stars, but hear me out. I love the concept of Arcedium. The coffee is better than good. I love that they roast their own beans. The selection of raw bars and food is great. Now here it goes. I would absolutely steer you away during peak times. The staff is mostly (a few exceptions) pleasant, but very slow to make drinks. Most times I've seen a huge line and 1 barista. If you do go at a peak time, just get drip coffee. You'll have it in no time. My even bigger gripe is the seating. They have a side room that is nearly always reserved. That's fine. I actually like that they have it, but it's a quarter of their seating. The other issue is, the rest of the seating is a smattering of high tops, a bar, and 4 tops. Today, at a non peak time, with 3 cars parked out front, you can not find a seat. Most of the time, you'll see 4 tops occupied by 1 person. If they just put in smaller 2 top tables, they would accommodate way more people. I hope they see this and think seriously about doing so. I prefer giving them my business, but after today I'll only grab a coffee to go every now and then.

This place is has a chill and airy vibe. Great to enjoy a cup of coffee with a friend or two. Great coffee aroma. They sell coffee beans! This place has karaoke night sometimes.

Now in my first semester of grad school so I'm here ALL the time! I only wish they were open later than 7pm! Bottomless cup of coffee for less than $2. What, am I back in college again? Free wifi. Artistic foam work. Delicious house blend coffee. Strong lattes. Drinks I've ordered: Chai tea latte-foam friendly, not too sweet, not too spice-ey. People who work here really like their jobs. Kokomate tea (cinnamon, roiboos). Just asked to have my tea re-warmed and they refilled it for me! Nutty almond cream iced tea($2.35 for a large). Only iced tea is black peach tea but will ice any of their offered hot teas. Breve latte for when I want something strong but sweet. During the summer they now offer affogato made with Kimmer's jamocha icecream ($3.75). I love love their soups! Savory chicken orzo soup. HAAAAAAAmazing! Zuppa toscana with small pebble pasta balls, light turkey meatballs. asparagus white cheddar soup was warm and filling. Their chicken tortilla soup is so yummy too! They're only offered in the fall and winter so make sure you get your fill! Gets pretty busy and crowded so time your visit right, go at or after lunch time. Also, if you need a little privacy with a group, they have a separate closed off room with 4 square tables that seat 4 people each. There is no charge to reserve the room. You just have to have at least 8 people who spend a total of $25. What a deal!

Finding myself in St. Charles with some frequency, I was pleased to find an enjoyable coffee hangout. Near the Fox River, part of some recent construction, the space is more Starbucks décor than a unique, quirky design. That said, the space is comfortable, unhurried. They have a long curved bar which offers a nice sitting for a conversation. And as for my latte, I'd say a good latte. They have a case of fresh baked goods which looks great and their menu includes sandwiches. Basically, a star better than the same-o-same-o Starbucks.

After hearing so many coworkers speak highly of this place, I finally decided to trek down to St. Charles to see what it was all about. Right off the bat, I was impressed by the decor, as the coffeehouse felt much more local than your round-of-the-mill Starbucks, yet it was very updated and trendy at the same time. I was a fan, and could see myself plonking down with a computer, if I ever had the need to work elsewhere. I ordered a hot chocolate and double chocolate brownie because why not, right? Both were fantastic. The chocolate was very smooth and rich, with tremendous flavor. Again, thumbs up in this department. The only issue with the Arcedium was the wait time. The average order took at least five minutes to fulfill, making me think this would not be the ideal place to stop when in a hurry. In our case, there was a woman who was clearly very unhappy with her coffee and sent it back no less than three times. Her antics pushed our wait time back to almost 12 minutes. While we were not in a hurry, I have come to expect coffee shops to move much quicker than that, and so I was a little annoyed.

I love this place! All the drinks are high quality and not artificial like so many other coffee shops which use cheap syrups. It's very cozy inside and a great place to relax and sip on a delicious latte.

Great coffee. Great vibes! Awesome place to study or share a coffee with a friend. Loved it!

  • E B.

Best coffee (beans) in the area. If ordering a drink the quality really depends on the barista so a cappuccino or latte is hit or miss. Need to take some more time training and perfecting the art.

Go here for the coffee, stay for the macaroons! Not sure how they stand apart from a place like say Graham's. These guys have a more Starbucks like feel to them. That's not saying that's a bad thing....it's just not that homey neighborhood coffee shop feel. But that could still be your cup of tea.

  • Catie B.

This used to be my FAVORITE coffeehouse with daily visits for coffee and occasional meeting with friends. However at least 3x during the past month the wait for a beverage has become standing like a herd of cattle for approximately 15 minutes. Sadly it is no longer my "on the way to work" way to start my day. I dont know if it has to do with staff or equipment and I take no pleasure in writing a negative review...however if you need to grab a drink on your way...this may not be the place to start a stress free happy day. The reason for 3 stars is because the staff is super nice and polite and the atmosphere is great.

I have to be honest, I didn't like the Arcedium before... Only because it smelled weird to me, but after going there about a week ago, I'm becoming a regular. I'm loving their White Chocolate Mocha, and their Aztec Mocha is awesome, too. The baristas are very friendly and actually care about the quality of your beverage. They also do latte art! I LOVE LATTE ART! There's a lot of seating, and they have a meeting room off to the side. The environment is very cozy, like a small town coffeeshop should be. I'll definitely be back! By the way, I do NOT think it smells weird anymore.

I love the coffee here and have noticed a notable decline in service this past year. I love supporting the independent coffee shop, however, wonder if they will make it with Starbucks just moving down the street. I was here this morning, it's a hot day, it felt like 90 degrees inside, did they forget to turn the air down? It was busy and I waited almost 25 minutes for my drink. Is anyone managing this shop anymore? The young folks are nice, but they usually have one barista and it's slow during busy times. I am leaving the area and will no longer frequent Arcedium. When I first went there it was so awesome, sad to see the decline.

Slow and disorganized, definetly not worth the wait, cold and unprofessional, atleast at Starbucks you get the service you pay for!

I've visited this place a half dozen times over the past three months since it's only a few miles away from my house. The location is extremely convenient, easily accessible by bike or car due to its proximity to the river trail. The shop is clean and the staff is extremely kind. The reason it only gets two stars? I'm not a fan of their coffee. I've tried a variety a their beans brewed via pour over, drip and french press. Unfortunately, they all tasted pretty much the same and they all seemed to lack the body, flavor and aroma I've come to expect. Underwhelmed is probably the best word I can use to describe it. I'm not saying that I won't visit them again. It's a great place to work and the staff is great. However, it wouldn't be my first choice in the area for black coffee.

Best small coffee shop in Kane county. And Dupage. Actually I just love the Arcedium so much. I could live off of their vanilla lattes and their drinks of the day are always amazing. Don't forget to pick up something from the bakery case.

This review has been waiting to happen but - not exactly sure what is wrong with the customer service, but working in that industry myself I can't imagine ignoring and treating customers in the fashion they do. Laughing at a guest's simple order of a medium coffee with soy shouldn't 1. Be super complicated and 2. Come with a side of eye rolling and sarcasm. There wasn't a wall hiding the cashier and barista from talking their talk amongst the guests which I find extremely unprofessional and rude. The coffee was fine- would have loved to stick around and enjoyed my beverage but the atmosphere lacked comfort. Poor customer service.. And the few times I've been in here the few drinks I have had have been sub par.

The quality of food coffee and service seems to be slipping now that Mike the manager is gone, I am soooo sad!!! I used to love this place, but now Ian questioning the direction of ownership. They need a qualified manager! Even the staff look sad....

I am a BIG fan of Arcedium! It is THE place to go for coffee. I promise. The coffee here is to die for. I crave it just thinking about it. I don't even live in the Fox Valley area, and I drive all the way out here for coffee. It is the bee's knees, if you will pardon my dorky expression. The menu has a diverse assortment of offerings, from staples, to seasonal drinks, to delicious roasts from all over the world. They have non-dairy milk alternatives for lactose-intolerant/vegan folks such as myself. The prices aren't any worse than other coffee houses. They offer pastries and the like for nibbling on, though I've never tried any of them. The shop is modernly classic, neat, clean, friendly, and well-lighted. It's got mellow music and lots of windows, plenty of seating, and a gorgeous coffee bar to-boot! It's the perfect place to get some work done, meet up with friends or family, and not feel crowded or eavesdropped on while doing so. It's never too noisy and the staff is working constantly to keep the place clean, well serviced, and running smoothly. The staff is patient, friendly, and accommodating. The drinks come piping hot and beautifully presented, and you never have to wait too long. The sizes are not minuscule and don't leave you feeling like you need a second cup to get your money's worth. I love going to Arcedium. It's the perfect place to be on a frigid winter day, with the sun coming through the steamy windows and a warm cup of goodness between your hands. Give them a try. You'll go back again and again.

After being a Starbucks fan for a long time I decided to go somewhere else because of the political choices Starbucks makes and arcedium came highly recommended. Sadly this was nothing like the quality I am used to,ordered a double shot small cappuccino to go took about 15 minutes or longer to get and the taste was like a big milky coffee. My last trip there to crowded to slow and no good coffee.

Arcedium is THE place to go for coffee in the Fox Valley. They roast their own beans--and to perfection!--which is something that is important for a coffee snob like myself. I've never had a drink I didn't like, although my go-to's are the Vanilla Americano and Chai Tea Latte. The coffee is always strong and smooth. The food options are limited to Panini's, salads, and baked goods, but everything I've tried has been very tasty. Although the service can be slow when it is busy--which is most of the time--the baristas are all very friendly. They make their best effort to remember you and your usual order. One barista in particular remembers that I always order my drink with soy milk and will remind me if I forget. With its trendy, welcoming atmosphere and not-too-loud music, it is a great environment for any occasion, whether it's getting work done or socializing. There are several tables, lounge chairs, and bar seating. It even has a private room off the main seating area that can be reserved for work meetings and study sessions. During busy times, however, it can be difficult to find a table since seating is fairly limited. If you want to enjoy a delicious cup of coffee in a friendly, inviting atmosphere,Arcedium is definitely the place for you.

I have been coming here for years. Such a great local place for amazing coffee and tasty breakfast items. WAYYY better than Starbucks. Lots of computer junkies and bike riders, but it's a great place to chat with friends.

Pumpkin spice latte? Psh. Arcedium is advanced, not a bunch of amateurs. They have several pumpkin pleasures to plump up your palate. I will try their chai at some point...but this time of year, I have to admit, I'm kind of a slave to the pumpkin. I'm not even that big a coffee fan, but put pumpkin in it and I'm there. Sorry. Arcedium also has a bunch of delicious baked goods available for sale. I tried a scone and an alfajore sandwiched with dulce de leche. The scone was buttery and light, while the alfajore practically floated away. I hadn't had lunch that day, but I was glad -- I didn't feel bad about taking down both those tasty baked goods. Arcedium's roaster is proudly on display in their main seating area, since they roast their beans in-house. It wasn't going while I was there, but the bar is cleverly situated around the roaster, so you can watch the action whenever it's going. I would totally watch that, so it's probably a good thing I wasn't there at the right time, or else I wouldn't have gotten any work done. The place is warm, relaxed, and inviting. Music isn't up too loud, and even in the main seating area, the acoustics are such that the place can be full of people, yet you can still manage to concentrate if you're trying to work or read. (Or I could, at least.) There's also a separate room that's quieter, where I saw a few other people working away with their laptops. I suspect this room might be available for groups, but it's really cool that this place offers a quiet room. Sometimes, you just gotta get out of the house to do your best work. Arcedium is there to help.

A cool looking coffee Ouse in a great downtown area along he fox river. The selection of items were huge and they had special variety coffees on their special that seem to change often. This seems to be one of the best coffee houses in the area with a great interior and customers. Not crowded and small like Starbucks

I have found another java nirvana and once again it is nowhere near where I live. I see more road trips in my future! The space is spectacular - fluid, warm, inviting, modern and super clean. The counter is rounded and invites you to sit, caffeinate and use the free wi-fi. Oh, this is not enough for you? Well, how about that they roast their own beans? If I lived in the Fox Valley I would be here every.single.day because it is that terrific. I ordered a small vanilla latte to go and a macaroon. The chewy delicious morsel was instantly devoured which gave me the ability to focus on the gorgeous medium they gave me complete with a foam leaf. I wanted to grab that barista and bring him home with me. Perfection in a cup with foam, that's Arcedium to me Cost: Less than 4.00 Cup: Paper Preparation: Hand crafted and then some

The ambiance isn't as cozy and warm as some of the other reviews lead me to believe. Instead it felt a little more sterile (save for the spilled coffee beans on the floor here and there). I wasn't greeted right away when I entered. Instead I hovered by the register/menu for a few minutes before anyone acknowledged that I was there. It wasn't even busy. There were only a handful of people scattered about already sitting with their drinks. They have a few arm chairs that looked relatively comfortable right when you walk in, but with the cold winter breeze following patrons in through the entrance it wasn't an ideal area to sit. Maybe during the summer it would be fine. I ordered a cappuccino that was pretty solid, and a cinnamon roll that was incredibly disappointing. They didn't warm it like most coffee shops/cafes do. It was dry yet oddly chewy. It gave the impression of being soft and pillowy but when I bit into it I literally had to rip it from my mouth to break off a piece. That's how stale it was. I ended up not eating it. The struggle wasn't worth it. I won't be returning.

Arcedium's atmosphere is soothing and electric. I return again and again for their great coffee but what truly makes arcedium as great at it is, are the people behind the counter. Specifically Liv. Her perfect smile and kind eyes lift up my day so much so I almost don't need that extra shot... But give it to me anyways.

I am not a huge coffee drinker but my wife is so I hit a lot of coffee shops with her. Every once in a while I will have a coffee but I normally get a smoothie or hot chocolate. Today being cooler, I ordered an Aztec version of their hot chocolate. It was outstanding and made me love those Aztecs. This hot chocolate was spicy with cinnamon and topped off with whipped cream, paired with a pumpkin muffin it made for one he-man type fall breakfast. Only this he-man couldn't even finish the hugeness that is a medium. I feel my title as big eater is in jeopardy but next time, I will order a small. Ordering their hot chocolate? He man score. Not being able to finish? He man fail.

I visit here on occasion as I work in Geneva. This is a really nice little coffeehouse. One of the things they do that I especially like is they offer (during certain hours) coffee made via siphon brew. It's one of only a few places I know of that will prepare coffee this way. It's labor intensive, fun to watch and oh so worth it. The taste is incredible. The prices are on par with a Starbucks and the baristas are very friendly. Do your community a favor and support local businesses!

Very disappointing. Lots of attitude, bitter, over-drawn espresso, and a barista without the ability to count shots. Back to Starbucks!

Arcedium is my go-to coffee shop to work on the laptop and meet people. It feels like a hub of people meeting. The coffee tastes fresh and smooth, and as a picky coffee drinker, this is a plus. Usually Arcedium is full of people; finding a seat especially if I'm with other people can be difficult. The baristas are usually pretty friendly. No pretension here.

Arcedium is another overrated place in the Fox Valley area that everyone gushes about and one that receives a ton of "unbiased" awards but one that I find very hit and miss, mostly miss. I used to come here every day, years ago as well as recently, and I was so disappointed by the lack of consistency in the drinks, and the staff, that I ended up switching to 318, which is so much better. The coffee here, like I said, is very inconsistent as all the different, constantly rotating, baristas never seem to follow any one set of directions, something even Starbucks has down to an art. I often found that unless the baristas I liked actually made my coffee the quality would be abhorrent and a waste of, quite a bit, of money and I hate wasting my money like that. But, most of the other patrons always seem so thrilled, and rich, that it does not matter to them what goes into their cup so long as they get to sit and show themselves off in their new yoga pant; but that's the Fox Valley for you. If you are looking for an actual quality coffee, great homemade gelato and friendly service, with consistent staff and management, go to Graham's 318 in Geneva.

The best coffee, anywhere, period! I play a game where I order the 'Drink of the Day', no matter what it is, and I have never once been disappointed! The Peanut Butter and Jelly Latte is simply awesome! And when I want some good old black, hair on your chest, coffee, there is no better spot! I buy it by the pound too, for when I can't get in for a cup!

Cozy coffeehouse and friendly service. It's a nice place to chat with a friend or date haha. I had to check this place out because I'd rather support an independently owned neighborhood business than a major chain. They sell delicious baked goods too so give them a try if you're needing a hit of caffeine or hot chocolate, a scone, or free wi-fi teehee.

I love everything about arcedium! Excellent coffee. Friendly knowledgeable barista's. Cool atmosphere. They know my name and what drink im going to order. It is a must try if you've never been! Hands down best coffee place I've ever been to in this area, in fact I made an account just to make this review! The baristas are friendly and knowledgeable, always clarifying to make sure what you want and what you ordered match. I've never gotten something I haven't enjoyed, whether it be coffee, a pastry, or one of their amazing paninis (the cheese melt is my favorite, just the right amount of spice to liven things up). In addition, the atmosphere is very warm and inviting, making me want to stay and enjoy coffee for hours! If you haven't been here yet, you absolutely must.

Two words: Aztec Mocha. Verdict? Mmmmmmmmmmmmmm, with a frothy milk mustache! So, Arcedium is truly a suburban original: They roast their beans in house and the staffers are easy-on-the-eyes sweethearts. I could easily hang in here all day, and almost did as I clocked in a solid 2.5 hours. If you're trying to get some work done, you won't have any problems between the abundant outlets, tables and comfortable chairs. It's also on the quiet side in here, though they were rocking an A+ playlist the day I was in (just loud enough). Eventually, you will get hungry and you can satiate with a savory or a sweet from their menu including croissants, scones, quiche, cookies, paninis and grilled cheese. Bonus: Easy parking in downtown St. Charles and free, super-robust wi-fi! Because let's be real: Wi-fi should always be free, but god knows it's usually weak and I end up using my Verizon card. Not here!

I think I've found my new coffee shop! :) Back in the day, I used to go the Ragamuffin which was located by river in down town St. Charles. But after that closed a number of years ago, I was only left with chains around the area. Now returning to St. Charles after a few years, I'm very happy to have found Arcedium. Friendly people, great drinks, and a cool inside (I love the wrap around counter- it's super spacious and its a fun and stylish fixture. I also like the local art around the shop). I recommend the arctic monkey? haha I'm not sure what it was called but it sure was delicious. It definitely had mocha, peanut butter, and bananas. I also had a blueberry crumble slice and tasted their key lime bar. They were fine but my drink out sung both them. I'm just really excited to try the rest of their coffee and I cannot wait to go back.

As a coffee shop connoisseur, I am always thrilled to visit new magical lands of java. We visited the Arcedium on a day that was pouring outside during one of those awkward in-between-meals times. The place was packed, and it's no wonder why. The shop has a cozy atmosphere, with a good variety of seating types for individuals (bar seating, small tables), couples (high tables and four-person tables) and groups (a group room). For our purposes, it was also very important that they had some basic food items (a few salads, paninis, and a soup of the day), as I was starving, but the fiancee was only interested in a hot chocolate. For anyone looking for a place to study, this coffee shop has a plethora of outlets--perfect for plugging in your laptop or smart phone. They also have a huge variety of coffee drinks, including Aztec mochas, flavored espresso drinks, and more. Visit the Arcedium and java up!

I come here all the time! The coffee delicious (I'm extremely picky. I am a very educated coffee-consumer, and I worked through my high-school and college years in coffee shops). It's beginning I get crowded (and WARM) as their popularity increases. I'm giving them five stars despite the fact that a dude was weird to my mom regarding coupons (he made up odd stipulations that aren't printed on the coupon). Since his odd behavior/ rudeness happened twice, we've been back several times, and he seems to bend over backwards to be nice. You won't find a better brew in the fox valley area, that's for sure. It's a great place to hang, study, knit, or just grab a cup and be on your way. I DO wish they had a drive through since I have two little ones and I have a hard time carrying them AND hot coffee. Maybe someday!

Great location next to the Fox river and nearly walking distance from home, but damn their espresso is bitter. Having just visited Metropolis on Granville in Chicago the day prior, this was not a good coffee drinking experience. My caramel latte was extremely underwhelming from the bitter espresso to the airy and thin foam which carried the bitterness from the espresso. The place is neat and clean and the location is great, but this place fails badly in the number one reason to come to a coffee house and that's for good quality coffee drinks!

I LOVE Arcedium! It's kind of that little local shop everyone has in their mind's eye as to what they want to visit in a local coffee shop. Seems that many agree as it's always jam packed with a wide variety of customers too: business types, coffee date get togethers, book cramming students, etc... The food and drinks are excellent. They roast their own coffee and have numerous different types for you to try. I don't really drink much black coffee anymore so highly suggest an exceptional latte but know they're the real deal with all the drinks I've sampled. The staff is super bubbly, friendly, and full of passions. THE only reason I don't give it 5 stars is because of the lack of seating, it gets PACKED, & the fact that our favorite/hot/best Barista (my daughter & I refer to as Mr. ElectroSex Hair, lol) wasn't working on my last 2 visits to make my Dirty Non-Fat Chai Latte! :*( My daughter & her friends love to study there when back on weekends from NIU and swear by their Italian panini, so I'll pass that suggestion on as well. They also LOVE the Fall time drink specials, so hurray for Fall rolling around again soon! Overall, this is THE best coffee shop in the suburbs of Chicago I've ever been to, dare I even say...all of Illinois!

This place is now a Saturday and Sunday morning staple for my wife and I. I pretty much stick to plain coffee or the occasional cappuccino and those are both fantastic. I love the atmosphere in there. It's a great place to relax and read or bring your laptop or tablet and just chill for a while. The service is great, the pastries are great, and the coffee is outstanding.

Arcedium: Home of the frothiest and most delectable Chai Tea Latte this side of the Mississippi. Things that I love about Arcedium... -On a Sunday morn in d-town St. Charles, this is near one of the only places to find parking... quite convenient when it's flippin' cold outside. -Only charged me for a medium Chai Tea Latte when I got a large. -The amount of foamy goodness in my latte was enough to set a new delicious precedent for my taste buds. -LOTS of tables, seats, and nooks to sit and read, meet up with friends, or (if you're like me) wait by yourself while all your friends are late to a day date because they're not even at the point of being hungover, but still drunk from the night before. le sigh. -They have yummy paninis and breakfast treats like scones, muffins, and bagels- perfect for your almost hungover friends... though their cream cheese selection is a little disappointing. -Super friendly service and pretty darn good looking staff. Eye candy for everyone! -The atmosphere is a perfect mix of modern and cozy and the soundtrack to my breakfast break included some of my most favoritest songs (even B-sides!) that I never hear outside of my ipod. Just my style. --AFFORDABLE! My Andre the Giant sized cuppa Chai and bagel with cream cheese combined cost less than a medium, er- I mean Grande cup from S-Bux. Obvi, youtube.com/watch?v=2o1Q…

Been here twice. I've had a coconut iced coffee mocha drink, and a caramel iced coffee mocha drink, and both are most excellent, especially with the chocolate base. Since this is now my #2 option for independent coffee shops in the *entirety of the western suburbs*, I have to admit, this place is really good. Perhaps it's the fact I've lost half my body weight in water each time I've gotten here. Whatever the case, everything tastes rich, flavorful and just what I need here. And then there's the baked goods. Holy moly, the baked goods. Not quite as flavorful as, say, scones that come fresh out of my oven, but darn close. The scones here are wonderfully soft, have an appropriate amount of blueberries, and come with cream cheese in them. They also have incredibly good bars (7th heaven? I don't remember the name of it) that weren't here today, so I'm guessing that they rotate the menu. Doesn't matter. All of it is good, chewy, and made with real butter. I can't come up with a better compliment than that. Arcedium is worth seeking out if you're in the Fox Valley and just need someplace to hang out and get some great food and drinks.

A cute little location with everything you want from a coffee shop and more. The baristas are great and know what they're doin'. My Coconut, Almond Mocha Americano (tastes like an almond joy, you should try it) was awesome. The beans are fresh and not as burny as you would find at Starbucks. (Hey the 'bucks has its place, but for really good coffee...you know...I go elsewhere) I also had the pleasure of trying one of the paninis. Oh-my-grilled-cheese-gawd. YUM-O. 3 cheese, Chipotle ranch (I got mine on the side), chips and two pickles (yep, TWO!). Happiness is grilled cheese. The only reason I was even a teensy bit disappointed was the skimping on the side of Chipotle ranch...of course, upon further evaluation, my waistline didn't really need more than a little squirt of the stuff... Enjoy.

I happened across Arcedium due to a wrong turn. It's a couple blocks off the main strip in downtown St. Charles but worth the wander. Nice and spread out and very clean inside. Plus I really dig the bar where you can sit. The coffeehouse has free wifi but it could handle a few extra power outlets so people can charge their devices as they browse the web. The menu has some diversity to it but I have no idea how much customization is available as I only ordered a straight-up menu item (Aztec Mocha). There is also a room off the side that can be closed off presumably for meetings or private gatherings. That's a nice touch.

I thought it was cool. I've never seen a coffee shop with a bar before. Well, at least not such a long, curved bar. The layout was unique. If you are into coffee you will probably appreciate the view of the roaster. I got tea and a macaroon (the coconut kind). They serve Tiesta tea which seems to be a very hearty type of tea. There were real goji berries in my tea bag. Like I said, it was cool. The macaroon also exceeded expectations. Texturally very pleasing. It's nice to walk along the Fox River there. There was a mother goose sitting on her eggs or pregnant or something and there were signs on roadblocks warning walkers that she might get aggressive. This has nothing to do with Arcedium, but does tell you a little of the surrounding environment. If you like some nature with your coffee, this may be your coffeehouse!

Fantastic atmosphere, enormous refillable coffee, and the best French press in the area. There is no reason to go to Starbucks when this place is just around the corner. They have a pastry counter and make sandwiches, but I've never eaten here. I just love the in-house roasted coffee and I love to sit at the u-shaped counter and read the paper. Great mellow place!

Arcedium is my sanctuary, my haven, a place I go to for a little comfort. The mornings where I need a pick-me-up or a nice special coffee drink to celebrate after a particular grueling boot camp morning, Arcedium greets me with a warm coffee smile. I've visited quite a few times and I find the staff laid back, very friendly and helpful. Since it's not a chain with green trim, I'm not familiar with some of their coffee concoctions (they have a quite a menu of drinks) but they've been very helpful when I find myself asking lots of questions. It's a nice space, lots of windows and small table seating. There's a separate meeting room where I've seen folks having business or some sort of neighborhood committee meeting. I like the bar surrounding the barista, where you can watch all the coffee-making action. WiFi is available and there are nice sunny spots for reading. I've enjoyed all the drinks I've had there. It's usually a iced latte or fruity lemonade iced tea. Well made and with great flavor. But my new favorite are the Arctics--blended ice coffee drinks that are so refreshing. I haven't tried any of their pastries or lunches, but they look appealing as well.

A coffee stop in the burbs with it's own roaster and a hipster flavor all over the cafe? What else can a coffee loving gal ask for? Sad thing was that I wasn't in the mood for coffee that day, so I got tea instead. It was some combo tea and it was OK. I'd definitely go back to get the coffee.

I am writing this updated review and truly feel that this place is a great community location. The Food is great and the Tea great as well. The coffee is number one. Yes, The internet needs a speed bump but that is all. The staff go for the small things... I bough a coke and was handed a glass with ice and didn't have to ask. Food came out quick and was phenomenal. A great place to go for food and coffee/ tea.

Where was Arcedium when I lived in St Charles?! This is the kind of coffeehouse I always wanted... Perched near the Fox River with big comfy chairs, plenty of tables and a bar, beautiful woodwork and lots of light, Arcedium is a lovely space to walk into. It's also got some great coffee. I could smell the love from the roaster as we walked in, and enjoyed my cinnamon creme latte (iced) with great relish. Even though it was pretty sweet, I could still taste the great espresso underneath it. The menu of drinks is impressive; they also have pastries, soup, salads, and sandwiches. I don't get to the Fox Valley very often anymore, but I would love to return to Arcedium for another delightful drink.

I have work friends who work 'remotely' from this coffee house several times a week, so i've joined them a few times for lunch and work in the afternoon. their lunch options are not too many, but they are good for a small coffee house. their drinks are delicious, the servers are very friendly and the patrons are as well. love that there's a private room in the back so you can hide out in there and not disturb others if you have to take a call. there are plenty of other seats at the bar as well as around it. great gem in the STC

Coffee Shop Bliss! Like any other twenty-something on a hot summer day, I enjoy a good iced coffee, and this place makes a good one. Plus, they offer free refills (I just pay 65 cents for soy milk). The vibe is warm and friendly with a touch of cool.Plenty of space to socialize and work (free wi-fi and many outlets for laptops). The staff is great too. Sweet, speedy and knowledgable. The food is killer. I've tried the chicken salad and tuna salad sandwiches, both are great. I'm looking forward to trying the grilled cheese. Can you tell I'm in love? Not a thing wrong with this coffee shop.

Finally, a great cup of black coffee! I worked in the coffee industry for eighteen years, including a decade as the master coffee roaster at Papanicholas Coffee. I know what good coffee that has been properly roasted tastes like. This is it! Kudos to this coffeehouse!

Nice coffeehouse with beautiful, sleek decor and a variety of seating scenarios: tall tables, regular four-tops, large comfy leather chairs and a big bar ringing the preparation area. There is also a separate room for groups, which is nice (makes it more inviting for book clubs or the like). I am not a coffee drinker, but my Aztec hot chocolate was quite tasty: bittersweet with a hint of spice. I ordered a large, and the cappuccino-style cup it came in was a bit awkward to lift; not a terribly ergonomic handle. I hung out here for a few hours and wrote letters. A nice space, friendly staff (the two girls I interacted with were very nice), and good drinks. I'd return.

So comfy, openly cozy and a wickedly classic coffee house that screams for you to take a seat and kick back. A gem right off from the river with more seating and workrooms than your house, there's nothing but relaxtion at coffee houses like these. Sometimes when you're french press fails you, it's blustery out and all you want to do is curl up and sip a warm beverage, well then this is the place for you. The coffee (seasonal flavors galore), pastries and soups/sammies selections are pretty far and wide so you know you are more than welcome to sticking around longer than it takes to down your chai tea latte. After god knows how I got lost and wound up in St. Charles, I somehow, and very luckily found Arcedium to snag a warm cup of coffee. Taking a browse around before the order was up, this is a perfect setting for "working from home" with tons of tables and chairs, a mini conference room for larger groups and a plush seating area towards the back. Though this is a prime coffee house for sitting in, I took advantage of the paper cup and walked along the river taking in the views and a perfect Autumn afternoon. Lovely coffee that was brewed brilliantly, this is a treasure to the area for sure.

I have eaten some tasty pastries and sandwiches here over the last few years. I love the smell of the in-house roasted coffee and I like that it is off the beaten path and just across the parking lot from the Blue Goose Market. My only issue is that they charge 3x the price of other independent coffee stores and they charge way to much for soymilk when I go elsewhere and not have to pay for Soymilk.

Honestly, right now I'm at Arcedium, drinking coffee. I grew up in a smaller town and was, therefore, spoiled by homey, independent coffee shops. When I moved the Chicago area I expected to see indi coffee houses all over, it's a big city after all. But no such luck. chain coffee places had taken over leaving no room for the little guy. Then I found Arcedium. I was on my way home one weekend in early fall and when stumbled upon it. At first, I was somewhat put off by the business-like feel of the place (I'm used to unfinished wooden floors, creaky chairs, and artsy photography and art), but the feel has grown on me. It's clean and comfy. One weekend I was here in with my boyfriend and we caught one of the baristas working what looked like a fondu pot. but it was like a reverse way of brewing coffee and just about the coolest thing I've seen. (it's called a coffee siphon, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Va… ) The service is friendly; the coffee is good (they roast their own); the sandwiches and desserts are great (I like the Italian sandwich - comes with a pickle and chips). They know how to pull a shot and it seems like there's always people in the shop. It's great. Plus I believe they have an open mic on Saturdays. If you like independent coffee houses, and you like St. Charles, this is a definite must.

You want to go to the coffee house in the show Friends don't you? I know you do. Well Arcedium isn't exactly it; it's filled with a lot of pretense, privilege and hipsterism. That being said, it's the best we have and it's darned good. Qualifier - I DON'T DRINK COFFEE. I know that's lame, right? I do however drink chai and tea and assorted other fruity drinks that they make very well. Their Chai is second to none, coming with home made whipped cream, and patterned with caramel on the top. It is not only delicious, it's absolutely beautiful too. The barista's all care here. They know what they're doing and they do it well. Not always the fastest, but quality takes time. They are also all young and really friendly. The tea is well, tea. Very good and served with a smile. My daughter also happens to love the hot chocolate here and if she likes it, it's OK with me. They serve food here as well, but it's pretty average, both in quality and price. Some of the pastries can be excellent, and they are made fresh daily. The sadnwiches and larger plates are nothing special, however. They have free wi-fi, which makes up for the only OK food. I have hung out here for many, MANY hours writing and pontificating. The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars is that it's a pretty vanilla space, meaning it's bland visually and thematically. Starbucks is more visually and atmospherically exciting than Arcedium, and that's pretty sad. It's really not 'homey' at all. The place just doesn't have much charisma. Other than that small niggle, however, it's aces.

In a world where automatic espresso machines reign supreme, Arcedium is a safe haven of all things that good coffee should be: an artistically refined craft beverage. Go to Arcedium because each espresso shot is manually pulling and the milk is manually steamed to create the perfect foam and reach the perfect temperature. Yes, your drink may take longer than the 30 seconds at Starbucks, but the extra wait is well worth it. Afterall, if you're paying 3 to 5 dollars for a latte don't you want the absolute best?? Their coffee roasted in house is great as well.

  • Hal C.

I work out of here quite often. Staff has always been extremely nice and helpful. It's comfortable. The coffee is good. The food is inexpensive. None of the customers are ever really obnoxious (save myself, perhaps.. I'm a reporter who frequently asks people questions for polls, etc. here). Good small business. I'm glad to have gone through a few of their "buy 10, get one free" coffee cards.

I LOVE this place. It can get super busy at some points in the day as so many people like to come and meet up with friends or just sit and relax or work on their laptops. Both of which i have done on many an occasion. Their salads are delish, as well as their paninis and scones. I'm not a coffee drinker but I love their teas. Great employees and great atmosphere. Definitely well recommended!

  • Hollyn M.

Great coffee! Great atmosphere. They have plenty of space to spread out and do work. The staff is very nice and fairly knowledgeable (though not as much as Starbucks or Caribou employees). The drinks can also take a lot longer than the main chains do (4-5 min even with only one or no people in front of me). However the coffee and personal experience makes up for that easy!

For me coffee houses are like Thai restaurants I see one I got to try it, but being nestled a bit off of the main downtown St Charles business I never saw it but heard about it from my brother-in-law so I like the coffee house junkie I am I found and am very glad I did. The fact they have free Wi-Fi is a must as I'm also an Internet addict. But a good cup of coffee is the primary reason and Arcedium satisfies that as well. I've only had straight coffee none of the latte, mocha stuff but enjoy all of cups thus far. They have a house blend that is my usual but I like trying the other various roast and need to record them because it be helpful to remember those great roasts Their is a limited food menu, and I've only had the ham/cheddar panini and found it quite tasty. A display cabinet of bakery treats constantly calls my name but thus far I've avoided the temptation but they too have a tasty call when they are calling A couple of reviews have stated less then ideal service but that has not been the case with me and I'm one impatient dude because waiting means I'm missing Internet time. There have been a few times I had to wait in line but where does one go and not sometimes have a line, even a Dentist has a waiting line and how much fun are we waiting for there. The atmosphere or as my big word wife would say ambiance is nice and comfortable plenty of outlets to keep the Interconnection machine charged. They have free refills and it isn't out of the norm for me to spend 3 hours here. To keep me in one place that long there is something good going on there

This was a quaint coffee shop by where I used to work. They had nice flavors, and their desserts were decadent. I loved to order however, their fresh made salads- they were really filling and wonderful combo of flavors. Great smoothies too. Nice quiet atmosphere.

As a former resident of St. Charles, this is the place I go to to catch up. I invariably bump into someone (or three) I know. Service is friendly and absolutely lacking in Starbuckian snootiness. I love this place...except...way too many laptop hobos hogging space. One doofus will park at a table for four for hours...treating the shop like their private office, usually while nursing a up of tea. Owners need to set some rules and time limits...god knows these jerks won't do it on their own. Other than that...this is great place to meet friends and have a good cup of coffee.

  • Shaun F.

Coffee and staff are great. Much of the clientele - not so much. Loud conversations about boring parent/church/real estate stuff. I know. What kind of conversations should I expect in the suburbs, right? For some reason these conversations are more obtrusive and the people engaged in them seem to have a more inflated sense of self-importance than at other coffee places in the area, though. Overall definitely like the place. Always good to support smaller businesses too.

    (4)
  • Nathan S.

The coffee is the best in the Fox Valley area, and I wish that the atmosphere matched that level of quality. The decor screams "hotel lobby." It is beige...very, very beige. The tables, the walls, the art on the walls...all beige. The seating is surprisingly uncomfortable, and I can't sit here for more than 30 minutes without getting antsy, The customers seem to be 90% real estate agents and local business job interviews, so it is usually pretty loud and full of discussions about mortgage rates, The coffee is really good. They roast their own, and they know what they are doing, so it is worth hitting this place if you are just getting something to go. The staff is great, with the exception of one socially awkward bearded guy who continually tries to be funny and generally elicits uncomfortable silence from the customers he is talking to. Otherwise I really like the people. Free Wi-Fi, of course, and reasonably prices refills definitely helps this place out, but nothing overcomes the atmosphere.

  • Tak-seng L.

Thank goodness for this place. Original and non-chain coffee houses are an endangered species...especially in cookie cutter suburbia. This place is great for multiple reasons. Tons of space, tables, a coffee bar and a comfy sitting area. A mix of low and high tables and the bar surrounds their roasting area. Really nice to see a coffee house to this. Reminds me of Alterra in Milwaukee, WI. Food was pretty good. Didn't floor me or anything. Service was a touch slow but that's because the Starbucks factory has me a bit spoiled on speed. People are friendly and definitely a place that I will continue to go to.

I am SO lucky to live near Arcedium. It's still pretty new, but so far it's been fantastic. I love their lattes the most, but everything I've tried has been great! I get mine to go most of the time so I can't say too much about the atmosphere, but I like what I've seen. It's a really nice looking place. They have great pastries and the smoothies look good too! I think anyone who likes to support local businesses or is a Starbucks addict needs to go check out Arcedium! The owner and employees are all really friendly too. My top three favorite drinks are probably the Almond Latte, Aztec Mocha, and Banana Mocha Arctic. The Almond Croissant is delicious too!

  • Harry B.

Good if not better than the more popular coffee houses. If you like a good strong cup of coffee this is the place for you. Their variety of syrup is second to none. They roast their own beans there.

    (4)
  • Rene M.

They have a vast variety of sugar-free flavorings/syrups--way more than the "other" coffeehouse about a block & a half away. So, if I'm willing to get off my tush (bc they do not have a drive-thru), this is a much better option!

you know those people who like to hide and wait for you to pass by so they can pop out and scare you? yeah, that happened to me today, but instead of one person it was a huge group of people... and i didn't know them... and most of them probably didn't know each other... and they weren't hiding... and i'm pretty sure popping out to scare me wasn't on their minds... but, i startle easily. so, i was on a quest the other week to visit some coffee places and this was on my list. unfortunately, by the time i got there it was closed. so, today i made it in on time. for some reason i had like, complete tunnel vision when i walked in. i opened the door, saw the register, walked straight to it and got all nervous because my tunnel vision was blocking out the menu. o_O i finally found it and a huge display board featuring specials so i went with their toasted marshmallow mocha and a grilled cheese sandwich. well... it wasn't called a "grilled cheese" sandwich because it was so much more, but, in essence, that's what it was. so, i make my order and i'm thinking, "I hope they have places to sit." and i turn to the left and immediately jump back. the place was pretty packed. i seriously didn't notice people sitting at the tables and bar and talking... i almost screamed. also, to my surprise, there's a huge coffee bean roaster deal right in the middle of the floor. i completely didn't see any of it upon walking in. talk about tunnel vision. the mocha and the sandwich were awesome. the sandwich especially. it was made with multiple cheeses and it had an awesome mayo-y, spicy, chipotle-y spread. delicious. the place has a really relaxing ambiance and relaxed feel to it. i'd easily spend a few hours here to just chill. i'm curious about the history of the place though. the building really came off to me as civic center-y. like, a community multi-purpose building turned coffee shop. something about the walls and the layout i think. overall it was a great experience.

I've been meaning to review this place. It is just fantastic! My parents live in the area and every single time I go to see them I make it a point to stop here. The coffee is so smooth and delicious and the espresso drinks are wonderful, not at all bitter but still nice and bold. Its hard to go back to the starbucks on my walk into work in the city after treating myself here.

My husband and I live in St. Charles and like to give small local businesses as much of our business as possible. We were so excited to see Arcedium open up. It started out strong but lately has been leaving us dissatisfied. The service is beyond slow. The turn over in staff means someone new is always under training. Today they messed up our latte's yet again. After spending $8.00 in drinks and realizing they were wrong in the car we didn't return because honestly we didn't have ANOTHER 15 min to wait for them to fix it. We'd love to say goodbye to Starbucks for good but we're just not ready.

positives: some of the coffees are real winners; breakfast pastries and sandwiches have just enough variety and good quality; prices are much lower than you would find in chain coffee houses for the same volumes on drinks or same sizes on foods could be better: colors are really dark against a shade of beige, basically - not very appealing; furniture is pretty lame too - lots of cookie cutter stuff; some of the coffees are not bad but just don't have a flavor to make you want a second cup are you kidding(s)?: there's little to no space for walking through the main area when the place is busy; responsiveness of cashiers varies greatly depending on their being familiar with folks - if you're not a regular, you'll be lucky to sense any energy from them

I wish I could rate this higher, but it is so damn inconsistent. Some days a 5, some a 1, all depending on who is working. There are a few girls there who have no idea what they are doing, but I keep going back because some days the barista hits the nail on the head and blows my mind with deliciousness. The inside is beautiful. The prices are standard. I will continue coming here if only because it is a block away from where I work.

I'm a coffee house addict and looove independent businesses such as Arcedium. Not only do they roast their own coffee, but they serve local baked goods from the Cocoa Bean in Geneva. They also have regular acoustic entertainment and paintings on the walls from local artists. There is a bulletin board to pin your business cards, and post flyers for local events. The servers there are quick to recognize regular customers and make newcomers feel welcome. The atmosphere is very comfortable and conducive to a variety of purposes...reading for enjoyment, chatting with a friend, studying for a final, emailing for work. There is even a private meeting room with a door. Arcedium is very conveniently located near the Blue Goose supermarket and near the St. Charles riverwalk on the Fox River.
