Great place we go on Sunday's. Can't go wrong with anything that says Swedish. But the pancakes are my favorite

I've been going to Stockholm Inn since I was a kid, and it's always been great. The appearance has changed slightly over the years to add more space. The fake movable walls kind of bring the class down a little bit, but it's no big deal. The food hasn't changed for 2 decades. It's not incredible, pretty typical diner food. Omeletes, bacon, sausage, pancakes, orange juice, etc. This restaurant is one of the last good things about Rockford, and I sincerely hope they stay in business forever.

They have gotten too big now service is suffering and quality has slipped since the last couple of times I've been. Seems as if you have to wait to be seated you'll end up with a bit of a disappointing meal. I would still eat here over IHOP, Machine Shed or Denny's

Average diner food. Somewhat average service. Could use some updating. You will probably feel like you're dining in a nursing home-at least from my experience as we were the only table not having to feed someone else. Experiencing Stockholm syndrome would probably be more enjoyable than dining here for me again.

Food was good! They even have a breakfast buffet. Everything looked tasty and it was. Wasn't crazy about "American potatoes" it was just sliced potatoes either boiled or grilled not sure. Cinnamon rolls are addictive. Coffee was really good (not weak). The reason for the 4 stars it's because it was too loud and busy. Also, they sell some souvenirs etc and it was just cluttered. They have a great theme going on and I get it, but they need a better organization at the entrance and souvenir area. Customer service was great. Very sweet and polite employees.

The food is good, bland, swedish. This place is very popular but every time I go there the service takes forever. Coffee cups go empty, and larger tables get served first. Staff is polite but overworked.

Stockholm Inn may be a paradise for senior citizens, but this place isn't my cup of tea. It's located within the hospital strip. The exterior is pretty noticeable, with flags on the roof. However, I'm not impressed because the food I tasted wasn't, at all, outstanding. As soon as we walked in, I was drawn to the the little gift shop on the left, but the hostess greeted and seated us immediately. I was perusing through the menu. Nevertheless, the Americanized breakfast items were filled in the first three (3) pages. Finally I located the Swedish entree choices, yet I didn't see lots of seafood options, so I went with the basic: Swedish meatball special. I bet hubby experienced the similar frustration; he ordered the chicken sandwich. I also had the lindenberry tea. It was so blend. In other words, the aroma that the berries were supposed to give wasn't diffused in this tea. I was quite disappointed. There was a series of disappointing encounters we had with the entrees. The Swedish meatballs were tiny and frozen-looking: there were only seven (7) or eight (8) of them. The meshed potatoes were hard and not fluffy. I peeked the hubby's chicken sandwich: it looked extremely average. I just couldn't justify this place as a four (4) or five (5) star-restaurant quality. The service was also sloppy and insincere. However, the ladies' room was clean, well-lit, and tastefully-decorated. THAT alone was worth three (3) stars. For everything else, I would consider an epic failure. I'm assuming that Stockholm Inn has no competition in the Rockford area, but for a Chicago-foodie with a razor-sharpened palate, they won't get my repeated business.

Absolutely fantastic Swedish pancakes. I've never had anything but the pancakes and there is no reason to change that. Only thing better than an order of these beauties is to get the buffet and eat them all day. For that extra little zing: LINGONBERRIES your welcome!!!!

A Rockford favorite- love this place! Must go! Potato bake, Swedish pancakes are awesome. Great for large groups!

This is a massive Swedish restaurant. The food was good and reasonably authentic. The yellow pea soup was way too thick, but other than that everything was quite good. To say this place is Swedish from the floor to the ceiling in no exaggeration. The carpet is a repetitive design od Swedish Dala horses. In a place that can serve hundreds, that is a lot of carpeting! They also have a Swedish gift shop for all your shopping needs. We plan a return trip very soon! Hint ..... you can't go wrong with the Swedish pancakes and lingonberries.

A great place for breakfast. We enjoy the buffet and ordering from the menu. Haven't tried dinner or lunch yet however. For such a huge place, it runs smoothly and the food is good.

Have I seriously not yet written a review for Stockholm Inn? Oh my gourd. This is more or less a must-do every time we're in town now that we live up in Milwaukee (where any ethnic food that isn't Polish, German, Mexican or Italian is unheard of). My biggest tips would be to not come during peak times, to be sure to come before 2:00 on Sundays (they close at 2:00, and they only serve breakfast on Sundays), and to not come with a giant group if you want to be seated. The bathrooms in the restaurant section are "can't-miss"-level beautiful. They are SUPER busy all the time. That's the mark of a great place, but it can get frustrating when you are hangry as all get-out. I usually commit sacrilege and get an omelet or scrambled egg breakfast plate, but I have eaten the Swedish pancakes and they are indeed quite delicious. These days I'm trying to avoid insulin attacks so I don't really eat them anymore, but my husband gets them without fail. He usually wishes he'd gotten one size bigger every time! Their atmosphere and decor is especially lovely in the "restaurant" portion. There's a huge banquet room area with a giant TV where they seat large groups, and it's really a lot less charming if you ask me. I prefer to be seated in the restaurant proper, where I can enjoy the quieter atmosphere and the decor. Their private party rooms are beautiful as well. There is even a diner counter way in the back that you can sit if it's just one or two of you, but you might have to request it. The service is typically prompt and attentive, but when they are super busy you might encounter a hang-up and when you're hungry nothing feels worse than a scarce server. This is why I recommend not coming at peak breakfast/brunch time, especially on the weekends, since it's EXTREMELY popular for people to gather here after church. God help you if you try to come here around Easter... The prices are reasonable, especially for the buffet ($10). I like that you pay when you are leaving so that there's one less thing to wait for your server to attend to. Gift shop is cool, high prices but unique merchandise that is probably worth it. I like that they carry edibles as well as gifts!

I've been coming here for a very long time. I always get the same thing. My dad loves their Swedish pancakes. I normally get the Belgium waffle and eggs. Very good. Hospitality is great too. Very busy.

We really wanted to like this place more, we really did. It was not so much we didn't like it, we just didn't love it. We went here for the Sunday breakfast brunch. It is obviously very popular. Expect a wait, but nothing too bad. The food was good, but nothing special. They cater to an older crowd, so the food leans a little toward bland and service a tad slow, especially waiting for our check. They have to times they set up for buffet style meals, however the building is not designed to accommodate it. It is obviously at least four store fronts that were "strung" together, you have to weave down quite long aisles to get to the center where the food is set up. Since the crowd is older, this means navigating some walkers and wheelchairs as well as tables set up to maximize seating. What we had was good and authentic, but like we said, limited in flavor as well as selection. Would we come back? We live over an hour from here and came specifically for this. If we were in the area, yes we would try again however I do not think we would make that trip just for here. We would recommend it however if you are in the area.

I agree with reviewers here that if you ever visit Rockford, you just HAVE to come here. I really love the Swedish pancakes that they serve. They are very smooth. Try it with the whipped butter and syrup or whipped butter and lingonberries. The baked potatoes are also very very good. Bacon is cooked to perfection. The price for the buffet is also reasonable. Service is wonderful as well. So why not 5 stars? Well, some of the food from the buffet just isn't as good. For example, the swedish meatballs tastes pretty much like ground beef all clumped together with no seasoning. The ham casserole was also not very good. After I savored the yummy swedish pancakes and had the ham casserole, I just had to refrain from gagging. I suppose the experience really says something about their pancakes- it's really that good whereby you don't want anything else to ruin that pleasant tasting thing. Oh, and be sure to check out their really cute gift shop and swedish themed bathroom.

  • Allison F.

So...I know this place is huge and famous and supposedly delicious...but I left disappointed. I think there's more love in the gift shop than in the food (and even there I'm not tempted to buy up everything in sight). I feel as if I've had better Swedish pancakes in my life. These were very unmemorable and on the blander side. I agree with the reviewer who says that Stockholm Inn caters toward the older crowd. I would much rather take my business and tastebuds to something more flavorful and less "meh".

5 stars for breakfast- Love the breakfast here. We got almost every weekend for the breakfast Buffett. We love the variety and the fact that is one of the few that is fresh since they are SOOO busy (they are always bring out more and more). It could get busy here but staff are accustom to large crowds. Dinner was only 2-3 stars. We thought since we enjoyed the breakfast buffet soo much that we would try the dinner buffet. There is no comparison! The food was very mediocre, most items I could make better at home!

This place is heavily overrated. The food is OKAY. Why does everyone like this place so much? Our waitress seemed like she didn't want to be there and even tried to get us to go to the buffet instead. Just do your job! I don't want to over engorge myself... I had the French Toast Combo - two slices of French toast, 2 eggs, and bacon or sausage links. My eggs were scrambled and I had bacon. My drink was chocolate milk. The French toast was pretty good. My eggs seems artificial... Rubbery, bland, and cold. The bacon was barely cooked. A flat strip of cold meat. My chocolate milk wasn't very cold. All of it was kinda not a hit, more of a miss. T'was okay food. Good thing I didn't pay a lot for it. The food is pretty cheap here. With tax, my bill was $9.96. My girlfriend had a cheese omelet and hash browns. She said the omelet was so dry and flavorless. She liked the hash browns though. But she wishes she would've got Swedish pancakes instead. All in all, this place is overrated. It's not that great. Don't put it on a pedestal. I would rather go to IHOP.

Rockfordians, appreciate the great things you have, for they number not many. My new home in the PNW may be absolutely flooded with culinary delights from every corner of the globe but they still have nothing in the realm of Swedish food and the treasure that is the Stockholm Inn. Eat those pancakes with the peaceful knowledge that no one else in the U.S is getting them served quite so perfectly and for so great a price. You really do have it amazing. .

After 26 years in Chicago, I finally made it to Rockford, and HAD to try the Stockholm Inn. I had studied the menu beforehand, and decided on exactly the breakfast items I wanted. I arrived at 9:30am on a Saturday, and there was a 15-20 minute wait, unless I could find a place at the counter, which I did. I want to say that this place is well-prepared for crowds, and the people are friendly at every turn. Competence is another variable, and Stockholm Inn isn't competent. I wanted some leftovers, so I ordered coffee, plus the biscuits and gravy along with the Old Country Swedish Breakfast (I wanted leftovers as well as to sample a couple of their dishes). The latter comes with two eggs, fried salt herring, American fries and toast. For the Swedish breakfast, I was asked about my choice of egg preparation, potato type, and toast type, so I assumed everything was under control. The coffee arrived, and it was decent. However, there was no offer of cream, so I drank it black (which is OK with me). I was busy reading when the food arrived, so I had to hustle to remove my reading materials, and was pleasantly surprised by the volume of food. I'll admit to taking time to take pics of both plates before sampling anything. I dug into the biscuits and gravy, and was shocked by the absence of any flavor! Salt and pepper helped, but it takes talent to make food with absolutely no flavor. The real shocker came with the Swedish Breakfast. No herring, but there was a large piece of chicken fried steak! WTF? I ordered this dish, after perusing the menu weeks before, because it came with herring! I looked around for my server, but he was nowhere to be seen. I decided that the sunny side up eggs would not travel well, so started eating those, with some of the hashbrowns (nothing was seasoned; thank goodness for salt and pepper on the table). When my server finally appeared, I asked about the herring versus chicken fried steak. He said he heard, "Country fried," and assumed I wanted the steak. I had said, "Country Swedish Breakfast," reading it off the menu, so I don't know what happened, except that I didn't get my herring, and there was no offer to get me some herring. When your palate is set on something, and it doesn't appear, the disappointment is huge. Unfortunately, by the time my server reappeared, I had to leave to get on the road home. My server was very helpful with providing me with boxes for the food, and a bag, but all I can say is that Stockholm Inn has some of the most insipid food coupled with incompetent service I've ever experienced. I will not be returning, EVER! And I'm still disappointed at not having my herring!

Super busy on Sunday morning. Long wait time for seating. I walked in and at least 60 people were waiting to be seated. Seating was filled to capacity. $10.95 for buffet that had little more than Swedish pancakes, silver dollar pancakes, biscuits and gravey, bacon and sausage. Waitress very overwhelmed. Asked for more cream and never received. Dirty plates never cleared from table. Bacon super salty and greasy. Pancakes were Ok. Kicker was the mandatory 18% tip added to bill when ordering buffet and not receiving good service. I normally tip 20% for good service. Just didn't sit well since food and service was subpar. Wait staff was nice but just overwhelmed. Would not return as this was nothing special. Lots of better choices out there.

Apparently this is a "must visit" restaurant for those visiting Rockford. It's a large Scandinavian restaurant with an attached gift store that sells all sorts of Scandinavian sweets, cook books and pastries. We came here on a Sunday morning where there was a long queue. However the place seems to run very smoothly and we were seated within 15 min. So what to order there? I was told that the Swedish pancakes is a must, and the egg bake also fantastic. Yet seeing loads of people heading towards the buffet line I decided to just go for it so I could try everything. My verdict, the Swedish pancakes were good, similar to crepes but slightly thicker, the potatoe bake was also yummy, and the bacon was crispy, perfectly done. It was an eye opening experience for an Asian to see so many Scandinavians in a little American city close to Chicago.

Best brunch I have ever had!! You can never go wrong with the Swedish Combo. 2 Swedish Pancakes with eggs and bacon. So gwoooood! I prefer strawberries on pancakes and makes for a great meal! I have also had the country biscuits and gravy which are also delicious. Great place to bring visitors.

Food is great but we took our 6 month baby here with us for the first time today and I went to change her in the bathroom and to my surprise there is no baby changing station in there. How do you expect this to be a family restaurant that people will return to if you don't have all of the equipment to satisfy them? There is plenty of room for one! I was not a happy mother today with a sad baby that had a dirty diaper.

If you can't decide on what to get- get the buffet! Has everything! As a southerner I was very happy to see grits and biscuits and gravy on the buffet, those two with the sausage and AMAZING cheesy hash browns- made me a very happy eater. The orange juice is freshly squeezed - coffee was a little weak and not the best flavor.

In a city with a lot of very good breakfast options (Johnny Pamcakes, Egg Harbor among them), this place is the crown jewel. There's not much more I can say that hasn't already been said in previous reviews. Their reputation certainly hasn't happened by accident. Obviously, the breakfast is rightly trumpeted -- best swedish pancakes, orange juice, egg benedicts, and skillets around. I have never been as enamored with their lunch or dinner options, but I do enjoy the Friday fish fry which has a different breading and overall feel than most other places. The service is always very good and they are always more than willing to take larger groups (probably consistently best large group service you'll find, if that makes sense). Definitely a must-stop every time I'm back in the area.

Hi, my name is Candice and I've got Stockholm Syndrome. My first trip into this legendary Rockford eatery and I was in no way let down. I went in hard, ordering the Super Stack of 4 Swedish pancakes and a side of lingonberries, which is actually a cereal bowl full lingonberry jelly. I'm gonna estimate it at about 47,000 calories... a fair dietary trade off for the happiness it provided me with. And did you know they do some sort of buffet/smorgasbord every day or night of the week? I know this because our server mentioned it about 45 times. I think she even got angry when we didn't want to check the buffet (which was actually only about 5 large trays of items out on one long table in a side room that we were waaay too lazy to walk to). The place is huge. Like HUGE. Like, Disney World should check this place out because Stockholm Inn's got a leg up on Epcot Sweden. There's like 10 different rooms decorated with various (what I can only assume to be) native treasures or whatever and then some rooms that look pretty barren and dull, like you can image a bunch of folding tables and chairs, which is not actually the case but I do remember looking in the rooms and praying that once our wait was up that we wouldn't be sat in hostage rooms... and whattdya know, we got a booth in the good area. Hurrah! I'd gone to late b-fast with 2 very fine gentlemen and one helluva hangover from drinking two, count 'em: TWO sh*t drinks at a wedding the night before. So there's that. Officially old. 27 is when you start making that 'ooof' noise whenever you sit down or get back up, only you don't notice that you do it until it's pointed out by a 26 year old who's been consulting another 'old friend', who's also 27 (*insert eyeroll, eyeroll, eyeroll, virtual middle finger, eyeroll*). And then at 28 you have two drinks, not enough to make you drunk, only enough for the sugars to eat away at your stomach lining, make you feel sick and start to sweat and then the next morning it's 11:30 in the afternoon and you're contemplating the best way to hang yourself from the shower rod. Oy. Wait, where was I? Oh yeah, so I'm with dos dudes and my order trumps both theirs as they apparently made my super stack extra wide and the man who brought our plates to the table laughed as he placed the monster one in front of me. I don't want to spoil it for you, but I did number on those mother f*ckin' cakes and left pretty damn proud with the twinkle of lingonberry love in my eye. In Rockford. Go here. GO HERE NOW. PS- I spyed a kid with a side of bacon and it was literally stacked 4 inches high.

When we were in Rockford about a month ago, we stopped in. Swedish pancakes and lingonberries.Their pancakes are made thin, and they have a great taste, especially when the berry sauce is poured over. The pancakes they make are in texture like a combination of a traditional pancake and a crepe. We also had a kroppkakor. Think large potato dumpling that contains sausage, bacon and onions. Offered fried and sliced the day we were here. Place is gigantic and packed on Saturday morning. Lots of Swedes and Norwegians by ancestry. They still say the same Ole jokes, and still laugh at them even though they've heard them 100 times. I also laughed. We also bought and brought back to LA 4 packages of lefsa.

Warning: This review only relates to breakfast. I have eaten here for lunch and dinner and the review would change by four stars to the negative for the swedish meatballs were the worst I have ever had. But, I want to write about breakfast, because it is the only place that has authentic swedish pancakes not crepes and yes there is a difference, just ask a swede. The home fries, hash browns, eggs, and breakfast meats are all really good as well. But, you should eat there for one reason only, the swedish pancakes. Whipped butter, syrup and lingonberries can't be beat! I dream of these pancakes on a regular basis. I try to make them at home. And yes, whenever I see them on the menu at another breakfast place, I try them. But no where that I have been has even come close to the ones at the Stockholm Inn in Rockford Illinois. Eat them and love them!

  • Jessica O.

I've been eating these swedish pancakes since I was in diapers. Now, any time I visit my hometown, we have to make a visit to Stockholm Inn. I always get the super stack with lingonberries, and then order them again to have when I get home. This is comfort food at its finest. The stack comes out steaming hot every time, with a generous scoop of butter on the side, and a big dish of tangy lingonberries (for you non swedes - lingonberries are like...tiny...not so tart cranberries - swimming in awesome sauce). I've nibbled from other plates before, and can vouch for the deliciousness of the eggs benedict, the omelets, but really...it's the swedish pancakes everyone comes for. This place is a local legend. Don't waste your time with any of the chains on state street. Make the drive further downtown and experience pancake perfection.

Food was hit or miss, mainly miss. Service was much the same. I think they should consider a party planner, or some sort of planner/manager for their busy hours. Stopped in with a party of around 30. With reservations, there was still a wait. I believe they sat other customers at our tables and had to move them out and clean up tables when we arrived. Whoops. Once seated, we waited about 15 minutes before water arrived at our tables, and another ten before a waiter began taking drink and food orders. Again, 30 people, 6 tables, and 1 WAITER! Not a good plan if you ask me. I actually bought some cookies at their gift shop to satisfy the grumblings that were becoming vocal. Anyways, once all of our orders were taken, we waited. And waited. And waited. Food then began coming out. The same 1 waiter delivering it. By the time the last table received their food, the first table was done eating. Someone in the back missed time management class apparently. I tried the quiche and Swedish pancakes. The quiche was burnt on the bottom and luke warm. Luckily, the pancakes were freaking awesome. I also tried the lingonberry jelly/sauce which was pretty good on the pancakes. Everybody else in the group gave me mixed reviews. One table complained that all of their food was cold. Everybody enjoyed their pancakes, but the rest of the food was, as I said, hit or miss. Not a bad place to come for breakfast, but I don't think they have an overall grasp on time, space, and/or staff management. Prepare to wait, possibly for a while. Definitely get the Swedish pancakes. Everything else, I wish you the best!

Lots of food for little amount of money. Friendly wait staff and large place. Get the Swedish pancakes but ask for the butter on the side.

"Do you think I should get a regular stack .... na make is a SUPER!" The only thing you should get when you come here is the Swedish pancakes with the lingonberries.... you want a side of eggs, maybe some hash browns ... no dude, stick to the swedes. Okay, you can get some coffee or tea too, but that's it! I will not even comment on the other food here, I have had it and I know to stick with those delicious cakes. This place is ridiculous, they used to be a small place but have spread like a virus taking over a few other stores next to them expanding to the monster restaurant it is today. I think the fire department capacity said 1024 the last I checked. Even with all the business they are still reppin' out amazing cakes day after day! If you are hungry get a supper stack, don't be fooled by the All-You-Can-Eat-Swedes because the super is more then enough. These things come to you stacked up and hot with a huge chunk of whipped butter and the berries on the side. They are so good they do not even need syrup all you need are those amazing lingonberries. I think the guy making the cakes does not even take orders he just keeps making them all day and lets someone else divides them out of the masses. Even though the place is huge there is still a good chance you will need to wait, it is always that packed and even more so in the morning! A little (embedded) quick tip, you can eat at the bar tucked away in the back where you can sit right down - almost no wait. For example today is Christmas eve, I went there and there was an hour and fifteen minute wait.... I was like um no... we walked to the bar and sat down with in two minutes and had our cakes in fifteen. You can't beat that! A strange thing about the place is that you have to ask for water and when it comes to you it is 95% ice. They used to bring it out to you but when I asked my friend why they did not have water anymore he said you have to ask. I guess no one was drinking their water... but that is not the case, the reality of the situation is you just can't drink the water since you have to wait for the ice to melt. Maybe ask for no ice if you want to have some water. Regardless, this is THE breakfast place in Rockford, if you have to wait, it is worth it, those cakes are just that good!

This is my favorite breakfast place when I come to Rockford. the service is what it is for the Midwest. those that come from here will understand what I mean. not saying the service is bad. I have actually had really good service here overall. the Swedish pancakes are the bomb. try them when u come here. it's a must. the lingonberry sauce is awesome. I have been going to Stockholm since I was kid. Every time we go back to Rockford, we make sure to stop in at least once for a short stack of Swedes with lingonberry sauce. This trip we hit Stockholm 3 times during our 3 day stay, twice for breakfast and one for their Swedish smorgasbord. Both mornings I split a short stack of Swedes with lingonberry sauce and an egg bake with my mom. Both were very good both mornings. You just can't find Swedish pancakes like the Stockholm's anywhere else. Last night we went to the Swedish smorgasbord. Apparently it's something new they're doing, and it was my first time. It was really, really good. They had Swedish meatballs, Swedish pancakes, kropkokkar (sp?), coffee cake, potato bake, pickled herring, and many other selections. I was excited to try so many Swedish dishes at once. I was especially glad they had coffee cake on the menu as I just can't find Swedish-style coffee cake back home, and I much prefer it to American coffee cake.

I've grown up eating at this restaurant. I remember my father taking me here when I was a kid and they were located at Broadway and 20th. They have some of the best Swedish Pancakes I've had, and they are the best restaurant Swedish Pancakes I've ever had. I normally only go here for Breakfast, but I have been there for dinner a couple of times. The food is always good. I have my favorites, but it changes depending on my mood. The service here is usually good. My only complaint is that they are ALWAYS busy on Saturday and Sunday mornings. If you don't get there early enough, you will have a wait. Some people may see this as a bad ting, but I take it as a sign that they are doing something right if they can stay that busy. I always bring my in-laws and out of town guests here at least once when they come to visit and they all love it.

The best breakfast in the whole country. I travel for work and pleasure, nothing beats the menu here. Number one skillet, best Swedish pancakes, consistently friendly staff, and lovely Swedish decor throughout. The wait to get in is only a part of what can be expected on Sundays after church. I compare every breakfast I get to this place. Aside from visits to see my family in the Rockford area it's always a sure stop for me when in town.

The first time we went to The Stockholm Inn was about three years ago. We had heard all kinds of raves for their Swedish pancakes and knew that the place was a Rockford landmark, basically. We were terribly disappointed with the quality of the food. We'd never had Swedish pancakes before, so we didn't have anything to compare them too, we just knew we didn't like them at all. We recently decided to give them another chance after some friends told us that they had a great smorgasbord. We were once again very disappointed. Everything was extremely bland, no flavor whatsoever. Our server was awesome, but I honestly have to say that was some of the worst restaurant food I ve ever had. It was worse than school cafeteria food. It seems that about 95% of their customers are 65 and over, so that may have something to do with the no seasoning of the food. We usually give a restaurant three chances, but with The Stockholm Inn, two will be it. We won't be going back.

This place is definitely for the older population, but don't let that discourage you cause you can't get a better stack of Swedish pancakes here. The service is good as well.

This community favorite is so much more than swedish pancakes. The omeletes and breakfast skillets are huge and delicious! All of their breakfast items are very good. Don't let the full parking lot scare you off, the inside is huge with plenty of tables to accomodate any size family or group.

The food is amazing, especially the Swedish pancakes and potato bake but the service is horrible. I was visiting from San Diego and first we had to wait 45 minutes to sit down. I was Ok with it but then after ordering our breakfast, we had to wait an hour for our food - not even exaggerating. The people around us were seated about 20 min after and still got their food first. I complained to the manager and she stated some food takes longer than others but we ordered the same thing as everyone else who received their food first. The waitress offered a free slice of pie but it didn't do justice. An apology or acknowledgement from the manager would have been better.

My Husband and I went here for an impromptu Friday night dinner after realizing none of the teenagers would be home for dinner. What a treat! I give this 4 stars in their category: home cooking, diner, family style restaurant. We were seated in a room where there was a "bluegrass" band playing. Not too loud and nothing wild and crazy. It was a little entertainment. I ordered the turkey dinner and my husband had the all you can eat Friday night fish fry. The turkey was very tender with a load of real buttery mashed potatoes. Our server, Karen P. offered me a sample of their lingonberries. I loved them! I wish I would have had a whole bowl of those to enjoy with the turkey instead of the cranberry sauce, which was canned. The fish fry was excellent! This was one of the lightest and most flavorful batters I have EVER had! Both entrees came with 2 sides plus a dessert and Karen brought cardommon rolls and rye bread to the table. We added on a salad and each had a drink (coffee and tea) and our bill came to $22!!!! Not a bad deal! TONS of food for the money! Karen was a fabulous server and took excellent care of us, including swapping out my corn for a different side, as I was not a fan of the corn. It was more like corn pudding. I would recommend this to anyone for an inexpensive family night out or a low key date with the spouse.

Solid restaurant, clean. I would give this a 3.5 if 1/2 stars were available. Decor is ok. Very large restaurant. Prices are reasonable. I went specifically to try the Swedish Pancakes - they were good. I would describe them as heavy crepes, without the filling. They come with a huge dollop of butter on top, and you put either linginberry or strawberry preserves on top. They were delicious, but skip them if you have diet restrictions around fat intake. Would recommend - yes. Would return - yes.

There is a saying that if you're from Rockford, you're by default at least 10% Swedish. You don't have to actually have a Swedish family history, just your mere presence in the city does that to a person. As a genuine or honorary Swede, there are is really only one "Swedish" thing you're required to do: go to the Stockholm Inn for breakfast as often as possible. One step inside the restaurant and you'll feel at least 10% Swedish, too. From the Swedish horses on the carpet to the Swedish pastries in the bakery cases to the lingonberries, lutefisk, and meatballs on the menu, this is a place screams Sweden while somehow being just hometown enough to not make it (too) cheesy. I have fond memories of getting up bright and early on a Saturday morning when I was little and going with my dad to the old 20th St. location to beat the morning rush for what I can only describe as The Best Swedish Pancakes Ever. They may have expanded the restaurant several times (and relocated!) over the years, but you're going to get the same experience this weekend you got 30 years ago. I couldn't count the number of times I've eaten at the Stockholm Inn, but this review is based solely around the amazing Swedish pancakes, because I don't think I've ever been able to order anything else off the menu. They are that good. Swedish pancakes, in case you haven't encountered them before, are thin, crepe-like delights. They have a lot of egg whites and they are fairly sweet on their own. I always get a "short stack" (2 pancakes) because they are epically filling, despite their unassuming appearance. I think they have a magic machine that makes perfect pancakes in the back, because they are always exactly, perfectly, the same and will reach your table very hot. Get the lingonberries to go with your pancakes to make them quintessentially Swedish. My friends and I have debated about what lingonberries taste like, but we've always come up empty. So, just try them! My one issue with the Stockholm Inn is their coffee is terrible. But, just chock it up to the fact that this is essentially a timeless, yet Swedish, greasy spoon diner, and it just fits.

It takes me about 1 hour and 20 minutes to drive here. Best Swedish pancakes around. I've been coming here since 1997. Chicago has some decent places serving decent Swedish pancakes, but none as good as here. Their lingonberry and perfectly whipped butter go great with the pancakes.

This place is a Rockford instituion. Upon first visiting here I was told "you haven't visited Rockford until you've gone to Stockholm Inn". Well, I agree completely. This place is uniquely Swedish is every way. From the pictures on the wall, to the pancakes. If you have Swedish heritage, this is a great place to go. The food is great! The waffles and pancakes are delicious. I'm very picky about bacon and I always love theirs. It's crispy without being crunchy and crumbly. Perfect! The only issue holding me back from giving it 5 stars is the wait staff. It's a mixed bag there. Sometimes I love my waitor/waitress others I hate them. The problem is, the staff that I hate serve me more often than the ones I like. Overall, you must try it out for yourself. EDIT: I've gone back a few times since and the service has gone from hit or miss to abysmal! Two times in a row, we sat down and were not greated for over a half hour. Our meal came out about 1.5 hours after that. The entire time we are there, the staff is impolite and unattentive. I won't be going back anytime soon.

I've only eaten here once, but I had a pretty good experience. I was recently in Rockford to celebrate NYE with my best friend, and on NYD we went to the Stockholm Inn for breakfast. It was pretty crowded when we first got there, but (like all the other reviews noted) this place is huge, so we were seated within five minutes. I ordered the Bacon and Cheese Omelet, and it was good. It wasn't anything exceptional, but bacon and cheese omelets taste pretty much the same wherever you go, so it was good, nonetheless. I tasted some of my friend's Swedish Pancakes, and they were delicious. I'd never had them before, so I didn't know what to expect, but I liked them. I will definitely order them the next time I'm there. The service was OK. My husband had ordered a skillet and added sausage to it, but when it came out, there was no sausage in it. When the bill came, he told the waitress that they hadn't added sausage, so she apologized and took it off the bill. No big deal. Overall, I had a good time at Stockholm. The food is good, there is plenty of seating, the waitstaff is decent and there's a cute gift shop with Swedish items for sale. Good stuff.

I'm usually here around breakfast time, when it's busy, sometimes packed. This time, we ventured in at 3pm, and it was DEAD, also slow. To be fair, I believe it was just one waitress trying to handle a surprise rush, but I calls em like I sees em. Regardless, the Swedish pancakes were exactly what I had been dreaming of, so, mission accomplished. They've expanded the place into more of the strip mall and include some adorable party rooms (though I'm assuming you have to reserve far in advance.)

I've been here twice now...and both times its been awesome. My girlfriend took me there both times. She always gets breakfast. I guess that's what they're best known for...for good reason, probably. On Sundays, that's all they serve. Doesn't matter what time you go. All they serve on Sunday is breakfast. The staff is pretty nice. They're very patient with small children. They brought my small child a balloon before we were even seated (before you jump to conclusions about where I got this small child, I'll clarify: It's my girlfriend's daughter. Don't go crazy) which was nice. Their food is good. They have very good bacon and their Swedish pancakes are second to none. The hash browns were a little bland, but after some butter and salt and a tiny bit of syrup, they we're tremendous. If you're looking for super Swedish food that you ate in some rural chalet on a fjørd in Sweden, you might have to look elsewhere. This is Rockford, not Öland. They have basic breakfast fare plus a few things that you would maybe find at the US Embassy in Sweden...its not THE ULTIMATE SWEDISH EXPERIENCE IN ILLINOIS...but it's good. Its a big enough place to not really need much in the way of a reservation. We waited like five minutes at the most. I plan on coming back even though its in kind of a crappy part of town. Lock your doors. Creeps ahoy.

Stockholm Inn is a Rockford institution (so I'm told). Once in a shopping strip mall, it's taken over both stores on either side of it so it now seats 700 people. (Yeah...700...) All I can speak for is the breakfast - which was amazing. Since this is a Swedish pancake house, I should have gotten the pancakes...but I opted for the omelette (denver to be exact) and was not disappointed one bit. The accompanying hash browns were perfectly crispy and really good. (There are also cheesy potatoes which looked incredible - but I couldn't bring myself to get them.) I did get to taste the Swedish pancakes (which, I'm not sure exist in Boston) and they were also delicious! Very similar to a French crepe - nice a light and fluffy. My biggest regret? The orange juice. I had a taste. I should have gotten a glass. Easily the best orange juice I've ever had. Next time, Stockholm...next time!

While I believe you can find a cheaper and comparable breakfast other places...I think the real "hits" at Stockholm Inn are the lunch and dinner offerings. Great meatballs, meatloaf, kroppkakor, and the dinner buffet on Saturdays outshine what makes this place "known'. That said, the breakfasts are great too!!

Yes, my Mor Mor made better Swedish pancakes, but the "Swedes" at Stockholm Inn are pretty damn spectacular! In fact, all of their food is incredibly delicious! S.I. has a warm, clean, inviting atmosphere and the staff are charming and friendly. S.I. is a wonderful treat! Excellent gift shop too!

Stockholm is a great place for almost every occasion has great food for every meal. I come here most often for breakfast but I have been for lunch and dinner. There are many different areas to sit and there are even some private rooms for groups and a counter in the very back if you're flying solo. One of the reasons I like coming here for breakfast is because if you order coffee you are given your own personal pot. Its just so nice, especially for those of us who LOVE coffee! They also have very delicious buttermilk pancakes, which have a slight crisp to their outside, sooo yummy. I have also had some of their skillets and omelettes which are also tasty. The staff here is very nice and accommodating. There have been a few times where some school friends and I have come here to study before finals, and the staff has continued to check up on us and be attentive. The food is usually up pretty depending on how busy the place is, but it is always hot. They also have bakery items for sale which always look amazing, as well as Swedish heritage items for purchase. The decor here is all about Sweden, flags and murals cover the walls, and even the bathrooms are decorated with a Swedish flare. Overall, this is a great place to eat any time of day. Good food, great atmosphere and attentive staff.

If Yelp was around 10 years ago Stockholm Inn would have all 5 star ratings from everyone including myself. Don't believe the hype anymore as the quality is not what it used to be. The portions get smaller, the food is become more and more tasteless and generic. This is not the Stockholm Inn when I was kid and had to wait in line for every weekend.

Oh. Em. Gee. This place is so cheap. No, it is SO cheap. SO. Cheap. Basically, you're paying under $10 for a great deal of food. It's the kind of meal that you could take home leftovers and maybe stretch those to another meal (maybe a meal and a half). But you won't. Because the food is delicious and you will eat it all right then and there. And then you'll be really, really full and maybe have a little gas and all your friends will want to go somewhere else afterward but you won't be able to because you have to go home and poo because you never really became okay with the entire pooing-in-public-places concept. Just kidding. I can poo anywhere.

The food is just OK, but the service is just horrible unless you're at least 80 years old. Every time I've been there they seat you and then just forget about you for a half hour or more. If I ever go back I'll wear an oxygen mask so I can get a glass of water. Update: I thought that I would give them one last try for lunch. I sat at the counter thinking that I would get better service, there's only about ten seats, right? Nope. Every waitress in the place kept walking back and forth two feet in front of me for almost a half hour ignoring me while I tried to flag one down. They must be trained to ignore anyone without a wheelchair or respirator. Finally I got one of them to stop, and she gave me some guff about that not being her section. I asked for the waitress for that section and some water. She went to a tray of water glasses and started dumping one into another to fill it up (I've seen them do this before), then she put it in front of me with ZERO ice. I felt the glass and it was warm from sitting out so long. I asked for some ice, and she acted like I wanted the keys to her car. You could literally see the rage on her face. She turned around and went into the kitchen. I waited three or four minutes (how long does it take to get a glass of ice and water?), and reached my limit. That was it, I got up and walked out for the last time. I've eaten there and their old location a number of times in the last thirty years, mainly because other people wanted to go there. My in-laws loved the place, I have friends who love the place. I've never had a good meal there, not once. I've gone back just because those other people have raved about the wonderful Stockholm Inn, great food and great atmosphere, and I thought that I was simply missing something. I had it right all along. The place has the grim feel of a nursing home dining room with the appropriate bland, flavorless, lukewarm food. I've had good and bad dining experiences all around the world over the course of fifty years, and I have to say that the famous Stockholm Inn has been consistently the WORST SERVICE I've ever experienced. I've had worse food, but only when it made me seriously ill. I wanted to give negative numbers on this update, she pissed me off so bad. If the owner offered to pick me up in a limo and take me to his restaurant for a free meal, I'd rather walk to Burger King on 11th Street for an unsanitary burger. Perhaps I'm partially at fault for such a poor review because I should have given up on this place years ago and just let it lie.

I grew up on these swedish pancakes. A reall treat. Have not found to many places like this. They have been doing a great breakfast since I was a little tot. Being all swedish myself I still think the pancakse at Stockholm is a real treat. You must stop and try for yourself.

Kitschy Scandinavian ambience, but not very authentic Scandinavian cuisine. Hearty breakfasts. Recommend the Swedish pancakes as tasty and most authentic Scandinavian choice.

I grew up in Rockford and remember when this restaurant was on 20th and Broadway and was called Valkommen Inn. It used to be much smaller. Saturday morning breakfasts were packed--the line would go out the door. While waiting we could look at the gift shop featuring products from Sweden. They moved to their current location around 15 years ago I'd guess--much, much larger for more seating, but same wonderful Swedish pancakes, omelets, American fries, coffee. I haven't eaten here for a few years now, and I miss it! I only ate there for lunch or dinner a couple of times over my life of 30+ years......it was "OK" but breakfast is definitely their specialty. And go for the lingonberries with the Swedish pancakes. How often can you get those? They are a little more tart that other berries, but they go very well with the rich and sweet pancakes. The short stack was always plenty for me--these pancakes are huge! Get a taste of Rockford's Swedish roots and try it!

Everyone always raves about how great breakfast is at this place. Every time I have gone it has been a complete nightmare. Long waiting times, horrible service, and bad food. They get our order wrong every time we go and it took over an hour to get it. Don't bother going here.

Oh Stockholm Inn. How it pains me to finally write this review. You see, I've been in denial for several years when it comes to Stockholm (as we call it). I let it ride for several years on the sentimental factor, and the millions of good pancakes I had there. But, BUT--I think I'm seeing clearly now and I can write a review. As someone else said, if this was 10 years ago, they would totally get a 5 star rating. They would have gotten 5 stars for the food, the service, the friendly staff, cleanliness, etc. They would have gotten 5 stars for being a place that I went to literally hundreds and hundreds of times with my family and later, introducing my friends, boyfriends and now husband to. They would have gotten a 5 star rating for being a fun place to go on a Sunday morning, a place to go with 15 of us every day after Christmas, a place that got me through some, um, hangovers and a place that you went when you needed to go some place people knew you. I should have known from the fact that coffee was no longer .35 a cup (seriously--they kept it that cheap FOREVER) that it wasn't the same Stockholm Inn it had been. They kept sneaking in a price increase until last time I was there it was over $1.25. It's not the extra buck, it's the idea of it! Denial, i tell you. Now? The wait is ridiculous. The staff and owners? Usually not so friendly (there are still some old school staff there that are good). The food? Well, it isn't as good. The pancakes tend to be cold. Just not the same. They've gotten way too big and are coasting on everyone's sentimental memories of going there. Sniff. I hate when places get too big/sell out/forget why people like them. :(

Another Rockford staple. That is, a place that is solely about quantity over quality. Portions are ginormously unhealthy. The actual taste of the food is very Denny'sesque but not as good imho. Service is usually very attentative and friendly though.

Okay, so I love Stockholm Inn. The food is great, but the breakfast is amazing! The swedish pancakes are soooo good and with lingonberries they are even better. The western skillet is also awesome. They also have a fresh orange juice machine there and it is seriously the best oj I have ever had! There is also a gift shop with really cute Swedish style gifts. Definitely a delicious place to check out!

I would have to say that this place is still great, but the quality of the food went down. I've been there a few times from my initial review and I just kept thinking they were having an off day. I'm not sure if the processes or recipes changed cuz it is not the same.

My review of the Stockholm Inn may be clouded a bit by sentimentality and the fact I've only ever ordered the Swedish pancakes. However, those pancakes are damn good, and every visit there with my grandparents has been pleasant and the food has been delicious. That is about a 15 year track record of consistency. I don't live in Rockford, so that may also cloud my review, but I know that the next time I am in town, I will definitely be dragging the grandies to get some Swedish pancakes.

My mom and I finally went here after living in Rockford for like 12 years and hearing that, oh, Swedish people live here too. The food is perfect for the size and price. Really good breakfast food, good loving service. Last time I went, we saw Rick Nielsen. My mom was going crazy over there in her seat, wanting to go over and sing for him. I had to calm her down and tell her he probably gets that a lot here. Thankfully are food came and so did a possible embarassing episode. There's a cute little Swedish store in front. What they are missing are bag of Ole Saltys!

A Rockford Institution! This is a place that grew on me as I am not a Rockford native. I think they've kicked it up a notch in the past year. If you like Swedish pancakes my husband thinks they are the best. I've never been unhappy with anything I've ever ordered. It's a very "chill" kind of place even though it's typically very busy.

Rockford's BEST eat-in breakfast choice! Fast service, decent prices, tasty food, large portions. Gaudy Swedish decor (even on the carpet) makes this place a sight for the Ikea fan (of some sort) or for the fan of Swedish kitsch. Although it WILL be busy many days of the week, esp. Sundays, one rarely waits long to be seated nor for food after being seated, and reservations are happily taken. The menu is typical "breakfast food" with the addition of swedish pancakes, which are to be tried if you've never had them-I recommend getting the lingonberries (taste similar to cranberries) with them for a great flavor combination. Other native Swedish food may be ordered for lunch or dinner if the rest of the menu is not to one's favor. CHIP (Coronary Health Improvement Project)/Ornish menu items are available for those who have special dietary needs. Groups of all sizes can be easily fed here in a timely manner and parking is plentiful, whether in front or in back of the restaurant. If in town for a weekend event, slip over here for a memorable (in a good way) breakfast. Dress: come as you are (as long as you are clothed).

I just got back home to Chicago, from a day trip to Rockford, for some business. I went hungry so as to eat either breakfast or lunch while i was there. I read some reviews on YELP, after googling "all you can eat in Rockford Illinois" the day before i left with my friend. Most of the reviews were about this "Stockholm Inn" on Charles St.. Swedish this and Swedish that. Swedish pancakes, Swedish buffets, Lingonberries, Friday fish fries, etc..... We arrived about 2 PM, were seated 5 minutes later, order taken 5 minutes after being seated, then waited 15 minutes for the hot food to arrive. We paid and left by 3 PM, both fed very well and pleased that we came here. My waiter Mike was just superb. My friend was very prepared to give Mike his order, and did so with ease. My friend asked for some help in picking his selection, and Mike responded with both confidence and his personal preferences to share with my friend. But Mike convinced him to get the 4 Swedish pancakes with 3 ounces of lingonberries ($1.50 extra) and another breakfast that included 2 egg's (my friend had them basted), thick sliced potato's (for my friend), 2 slices of white toast with jam and/or butter, 3 strips of meaty BACON and a coffee. When my friend was finished with his ordering, i was so happy to be next! I told my waiter, Mike, that i wanted ALMOST the exact same thing, with just a few changes. I had the same Swedish pancakes with another 3 ounces of Lingonberries, the same basted eggs, rye toast (not buttered), BUT the BACON, and hash browns HAD to be well done and dark brown, NOT glistening in either butter, oil, or bacon fat, as i get very bad heartburn from foods cooked with these fats. If these foods came to my table looking wet, then i would have known that these types of fats were used. Mike was both patient and considerate while listening to my requests, and even came back from the kitchen to ask me how i would like my eggs cooked, because 'basted eggs' used the least amount of butter in the preparation. My jelly/jam holder's were completely filled on my table with orange marmalade, concord grape, strawberry jam, and 1 blackberry. and, of course, i had to ask for a few more blackberry (my favorite). I asked for water and received a glass of ice, sooooo i asked for another glass of water without the ice and there it was. No problem. Mike didn't waste a move. If he was coming to any table, he was also taking from any table, if necessary. He didn't bother us, and always kept an eye out for us, as with any of his other patrons. He checked on us within 2 minutes to see it the food we ordered was prepared to our satisfaction. And were we both shocked and surprised. This was a Perfect place, to get a Perfect meal, prepared Perfectly, by a staff whom cares about both the quality and presentation of their menu items along with the individual nuances of their patron's requests. My friend and i are about 59, and we both haven't seen this kind of service, and food preparation, according to the patron's needs, in decade's. My most sincere thanks go to the Chef's behind the scenes, whom both read and understood the patron's requests on the order ticket's, and then diligently try to make those special requests happen, to the very best of their abilities. These Chef's are very talented. My food was hot, dry (not greasy), bacon- well done (not burned), hash browns- also very dark (but not burned), no butter anywhere on my food or plate (as requested), and most importantly---- delicious! They even accept Discover card, along with many others. Mike gave us 2 coupon's to use for a discount on both our lingonberries orders. We were both so excited about the great experience we just had, that we both forgot to use the coupon's (which expire at the end of January 2012) and told Mike to let someone else use them towards a great meal. I will give you the best compliment that i can bestow upon you " I will keep coming back until you get it right". I also will NOT give you a 5 star rating because then i might not be able to get a seat when i want a tasty meal at this very clean establishment. I surely don't want to wait in line for meals this good. OK, I'LL GIVE YOU A 5 STAR RATING! I ate too much. Next time i will stick to the 2 Swedish pancakes with Lingonberries, 2 eggs, 2 bacon, hash browns, rye toast (no butter on anything on my plate), and 2 glasses of water. 90 miles each way was and will be worth the trip (especially in the late afternoon on the weekends for either your Friday COD Fish Fry or your Swedish Buffet on Saturday's.

To be fair: I don't eat gluten... And I'm fairly certain the best items on the menu are the gluten-laden pancakes. We went for breakfast on a Saturday morning, and while the place was PACKED, we were seated within 5 minutes. The food was ok. It was cold. I can't stand cold eggs. My wife ordered poached eggs and they were overdone (and cold). My son ordered his over easy and they were underdone (and cold). Notice a theme? My omelette was HUGE and was plenty for my 7 yo daughter and I to share (even though it was cold). We will try it again. Everyone has an "off" day. The server was friendly and competent. The coffee was hot and plentiful.

1st I was given one lonely piece of bread and one small dot of non butter. I was looking for Swedish meals to order for dinner and settled on the Swedish meatloaf. the mashed potatoes were cold so if I had butter, it would have not melted. The meatloaf was a little warmer but dry. I was given about 1 ounce of gravy in a little plastic cup. The server disappeared and when I finally requested more gravy, I was finished eating and put it in my Styrofoam container. She never asked about dessert, although I would not have ordered any.

So much more than just Swedish pancakes! All the food was delicious! Friendly service. Great Swedish ambiance. And a great value.

When I'm in Illinois, a visit to the Stockholm Inn is second in importance only to a visit with my grandparents. I've been eating here since I was the size of a Dala horse and this place was located in a tiny, dark location. Lunch and dinner are average at best, but they know how to do breakfast. A short stack of Swedes, some lingonberries, and a side of bacon and I'm in breakfast heaven. Scope out the tables around you and figure out whether you want your pancakes more done or less done than they're coming out. So why the three stars? The service has slipped a lot as the restaurant has gobbled up the strip mall and long-time servers have disappeared (died?). Breakfast is still good (if inconsistently cooked), but the staff of doting Swedish mothers has given way to a staff of disaffected Swedish-American youth. If you're the thirsty type, pre-game it, because you'll probably never see your server again to get a refill... and the rest will scurry away like cockroaches if you even try to make eye contact.

I've been here several times, it's a place with its own style! Love the Swedish pancakes, and buffet options are normally pretty good too. I've had other dishes and they been good as well. Oh and the place is big, and I mean BIG!!!
