Larry’s Diner Menu

Sorry, We are updating this restaurant menu details.

I am glad I went back to try out their breakfast again. There wasn't any wait on a Sunday morning and we were seated in a large booth. I ordered the TAB omelet which is Tomato, Avocado, and Bacon. The server came back and informed me they were out of avocado (totally bummed me out) but I substituted spinach instead. All four of us at the table asked for our hash browns crispy/well done, and we were happy when they actually arrived on our plates the way we wanted. Too often breakfast places give you limp, pasty white hash browns. I would go back for breakfast again.

If your into waitresses that look like truck drivers and bad food then Larry's is the spot. It resembles an old 70's dinner with a dessert display that would choke a maggot. Bathrooms are nasty, food is greasy. Dump!

As other people have mentioned- Larry's is your typical Greek style diner offering pages of selections for you to choose from. Our server was good if somewhat robotic in how she waited tables. The only thing I noticed was sub-par was the coffee which is basically colored water. Note to managers of places who target the "breakfast" crowd... please don't skimp on the coffee as it can make or break the rest of the meal. I felt the prices were a little high considering what other similar places are charging. Otherwise Larry's is a family run diner similar to many others in the greater Chicago area. When you want a quick bite to eat- that's not a bad thing at all.

Dusty, out dated decor and the menu has a million different options...which is almost never a good thing. My family and I literally LOL'd when I asked the server what the "cheese puff" was (i think that's what it was called.) She said she didn't know because she had never served it and she doesnt think "the boys" even know how to make it. WTF!? LOL Don't go.

I've tried this place 3 times. All without luck of having a decent breakfast. Hashbrowns tasted like frozen cardboard, decor looks like 1980's and portions were not that big. Each breakfast attempt was from a frozen or pre made kit I felt. Southern Belle's across the street is much better.

It's okay - I would go here again. It is your typical breakfast / lunch / dinner old person diner. We went on a Sunday it was pretty packed - which is always a good sign. There were 6 of us and we were quickly seated even though others were waiting. I'm pretty sure Larry himself sat us. Our server was nice, not the best server but this isn't a fine dining place either. I ordered the feta cheese omelet w/ a side of tazaiki sauce. It was awesome and their hash browns were even more awesome. It came with a side of pancakes, I took one bite and they were super dry so I decided to just leave them on the plate. The portions were huge. Our server was attentive, she refilled our water glasses several times and often asked if we needed anything. For two people the total was $16.80, with tip we spent $20.00 and left satisfied and full. I would definitely come back her again.

I don't know how this place survives. The waitress was friendly to a tee, but the food was not very good. I ordered the fried fish platter. The fish was pounded very thin, so as to occupy the entire plate and make it appear very large. You could only taste the breading on the fish. I wanted to take my toddler to the washroom, and I was told that something was amiss with the men's room and I would have to utilize the ladies' room. When I opened the restroom door, the smell suggested that I should abandon the premises immediately. In any case, there was no "baby changing station" in the men's room--c'mon Larry, us guys have to attend to these matters too. If the prices were decent, I might overlook all of this but they were high. And the interior hasn't been updated since the Eisenhower administration.

Great food and service. It is an institution in Plainfield and has the best deal in town for dinner.

Things I love about Larry's: the atmosphere and the people who work there. Things I do not love about Larry's: the food. Blech! Simply put, the food is overpriced and kinda crappy, even for your average greasy spoon diner. We've eaten there several times now, the last of which was a few days prior. My husband's reuben was slapped together haphazardly in a very unreuben-like fashion, and my grilled cheese was burnt and also greasy as they come. Our kids meals were fine, the fries are okay but nothing great, and the drinks were...drinks, you know? Overall, I can't in good conscience, recommend this place. There's a ton of better diner-esque joints with great food for less money.

Oh man, this place is just awful. Our table ordered fettuccine, chicken panini, and liver. The pasta was so bad, I threw it away in the garbage can outside. Don't go here. I shudder to think what the kitchen looks like...dirty, disgusting! Restaurant Impossible needs to come here.

Dirty, lousy food and below par service. Have tried this place several times, and each time swear I am not coming back. The first was for breakfast - hard to screw up, but they managed it. Eggs were served raw, the hashbrowns were black, and there were flies everywhere. I took a neighbor there, and was SO embarrassed by it! The parking lot always has people in it! Second time was for lunch - soggy bread, lettuce with brown edges and cold cuts. Final straw was for dinner at the suggestion of someone who heard it was good. It had been a while since I had been there, so thought maybe it had changed. Blech. The waitress recommended the pie for dessert, and we ended up tossing it. This time I mean it - never again! I agree with the other reviewers - Southern Belles across the street is a much better place!

I realllly wish they'd clean this place up! Been going here for 13 hrs & I'm all for the family businesses. They need to retrain staff in sanitation & get place cleaned up. I love soup here I love owners but dark & needs work. Place across street doesn't have his knowledge or attitude, I hope they get Er done!! Come on Larry!

This place isn't flashy, modern, all that comfy, or relaxing. But hell if they don't make a damn good breakfast! And I must warn you that you better come here starving because you will definitely leave here stuffed to the gills! Our waitress meant business. No small talk for this old school lady. She was very fast, took all of our orders quickly and accurately, kept the coffee coming on a regular basis and appeased the children in my group with crayons, a work sheet and paper to color. I ordered the Italian Skillet. Basically, it's everything that is on top of a special pizza over hash browns, a ton of mozzarella cheese, and a large helping of eggs on top. It also comes with toast or pancakes. I ordered the Texas toast. The toast alone was so thick and chewy that the toast alone could have appeased my appetite. But I came to gorge and gorge I did. The food is excellent. I don't know who their short order cook is, but that person knows how to get it done and get it done fast. I'd definitely come back next time I visit that area. Side Note, my group got there at 10:30 and the table of 6 guys next to us ordered beer with their breakfast. Yeah so they sever liquor here too. LOL

I like dive bars.... not dive restaurants!! This place has OK food. Nothing special that you can't find at every greasy spoon in the U.S. But for me, the place was just dirty and unkempt. If they let the front of the house get that run down.... how does the kitchen look? I will probably not return unless forced to!

  • Kelly B.

Old time diner that looks a little worn, but the breakfast is fresh and fast and the service is ultra friendly. I had the strip steak and eggs and it was good! Our server Alecia is friendly and extremely entertaining. There is a nicer looking breakfast restaurant across the street, but we really enjoyed the food and service here. They could use a renovation, but it definitely has character! The omelettes were heavy on the cheese. Just ask for less cheese if that matters to you.

Always wanted to try this place. Today was the first and last visit. Service was marginal at best. Brought wrong drinks. Took forever for appetizer. When food finally arrived, I took three bites and found a foot long hair in my food. Mentioned to server and requested it be removed from the bill. Server advised she would talk to the manager. Needless to say after finding this hair, I lost my appetite. Managers solution was to deduct $2 from the bill because according to the server, I ate half the sandwich, fries and soup. I ate 3 bites before I found the hair and gave my daughter my fries. I had to haggle with the manager and advise I could not eat anything else after finding the hair. Best the manager could do was take an additional $3. But I had to have the server bring the plate to the manager to prove that I only had 3 bites. Will deffinately NOT be going back here, nor recommending it to anyone.

This place deserves higher. Pretty good food and most things come with more like soups and bread, so you leave pretty full. The servings are quite large also. Super nice ladies who served me. Also A LOT of options. Pretty nice and clean inside. It is a diner after all, so don't expect too much. Wouldn't mind coming back here and bringing friends and family.

It's a diner whAt the heck do people expect, a five star meal? The food is good, filling abs affordable what more do you want ? The soups are my favorite thing on the menu.

  • John A.

If you are going for a good breakfast, this is the place. Not fancy, takes you back in time to the era of diners. Friendly staff, lots of choices, quick service and reasonable prices. We stop anytime we are in town in the morning. Can't really comment about lunch or dinner. For breakfast the farmers breakfast is my favorite. Crepes are also good. Regular coffee and plenty of it.

Larry's has always been a local greasy spoon restaurant in the Plainfield area. We used to go here for lunch occasionally. I recently had to be in the area for work but was severely jet lagged. Luckily, Larry's was open at 5:00 am and was ready to serve me breakfast. I had the skillet with a side of pancakes and coffee. The serving size was huge and I could finish half the skillet and a bit of the pancakes. They tasted great! The service was perfect as well.

  • Laura S.

I think Larry Diner is what it is. the food is ok, the service is good, the atmospher is ok. you get a lot for you money. Its ok and theres not much around Plainfield to begin with. On the other side it does need some renovations and clean up. And some updates to the decor. It still is ok and I love their soups.

  • Bill D.

Food is not good anymore. Larry died several years ago, so you can't blame him. I think he sold it to one of his Armenian relatives (brother maybe?) for $1, legal, but that way the federal loan for foreigners process starts all over again.

  • D M.

If I could give less than one star I would... waitresses were always friendly but the food is utterly nasty. The man at the register was extremely rude to my mother when she asked for a senior discount - he growled 'FOR CASH PURCHASES ONLY'. There were also myriad other bad experiences but I won't bother to write them all down. Suffice it to say we won't be going back.

  • Michael M.

Average. Local. Highly Affordable. Friendly. It's a typical diner. They were very over booked on Mother's Day. Unfortunately they weren't able to get our food to us and we decided to leave, unfed. What was worse was when we went to the counter and said 'we've been waiting for too long and wish to leave, how may I pay for our drinks" they actually had me pay $7 for 2 coffees and 2 hot chocolates. We never should have had to pay a dime as unsatisfied customers but......that's fine we know not to go back. Overall, I think the place is fine to go and have breakfast on a typical day. I don't think I'll be going back personally because my family was rather annoyed with the Mother's Day 2011 incident but in the interest of fairness probably wasnt' indicative of how they are. One thing that really did stand out in a very bad way though...they have the WORST coffee I have ever had to pay for.

I went Christmas tree shopping with my parents in Plainfield this past weekend, and on the way home we stopped at Larry's diner. I had delicious chicken noodle soup before my amazing chicken kabobs. Even my dad was impressed by the chicken kabobs (and that says a lot!) However, the next day when I opened my leftovers I discovered that there was a thick film of fat on my chicken and rice. I thought I was being healthy! I would have been much happier not to have realized that my meal was full of fat. I tried my brother's bacon cheeseburger, and it was really quite boring. I don't even know how you make a bacon cheeseburger boring! My dad had salad instead of soup, and his salad looked lame. But my mom liked her cream of broccoli soup. My sister is pretty much a vegetarian now, and she was not impressed by the menu. Besides breakfast items, there was 1 vegetarian option. Luckily they serve breakfast all day. I would go there next year when we go get our tree!

For consistent good service and good food, Larry's is tough to beat. Past critiques of outdated decor are silly. The entire place was recently renovated and is clean and comfy. Obviously this is not a 5 star restaurant, but they don't portend to be either. Instead they are your typical small town family diner. Sure there are a few duds on the menu, but most items are very good. The valley is very good as is the Monte cristo. My daughter loves the beefarella too. Simply put, its simple good food at low prices.

Nasty and their fat waitresses are nasty too. Try Southern Belle's across the street, which has much better food and service.

We went to Larry's for the first time last night. It was great from the moment we walked in. I was shocked to see all the negative reviews here this morning. The whole place was very clean. We were greated immediately and were served by a very good waitress. I had the broiled grouper and it was every bit as godd as or better than some fish restaurants I've been to. It came with a good sized dinner salad, steamed fresh carrot, broccoli and cauliflower, and Greek style delicious potatoes. My husband had the beef shish-ka-bob over rice which also came with veggies (peppers and onions) and potatoes. Both dinners also included desert which we took to go due to the size of the meals. I enjoyed the wonderful coconut cream pie later in the evening. We will definitely be going back :)

I love going here for breakfast. It is a small hometown diner but has more than just the usual menu options. It has a ton of skillets which the gypsy is my fav. Also the staff is always so friendly! As far as small hometown diners go. This is one of my favs!

  • D C.

My husband is a big breakfast guy and LOVES the meat lovers skillet here. I tagged along (though I don't really like breakfast food in general) and ordered a chicken wrap. Portions are very large and prices are right, but it wasn't anything spectacular. I will say the place seemed a little dingy and dark.

  • Jeff B.

The food here is just not good. Its greasy and tastes terrible. The atmosphere is nothing to write home about either. Save yourself the trip and go elsewhere!

This place looks deceptively small from the outside. The minute you walk in you see just how large the restaurant is. Don't let the packed parking lot discourage you. Larry's is great. We now go to Larry's every Sunday and have yet to be disappointed. The food is good and there's lots of it. You will not leave with an empty stomach. Larry's is extremely family friendly. There are a lot of older people here that are just as nice as can be and readily smile and/or say "hi" (just because). It seems like everybody in the restaurant knows everybody else. It's vaguely reminiscent of a big family dinner and everybody is on a first name basis with everybody else. Our first time there, I was already being called "Sweetie" and "Honey", and everybody acted like grandparents to our baby. The food is good, the prices are right, and the people are friendly. The restaurant may not necessarily be up to snuff for everyone, but it is certainly is a good little dive and a hidden gem.

  • Brianna R.

It's a typical diner, nothing too special or different. They offer a large variety of mediocre food. The decor is confusing, it seems like the place is divided into 3 parts; never renovated, renovated, and recently renovated. In the mornings it's crowded with seniors who go every there every single morning. At some point or another, you'll see the owner himself, who seems like doing anything is a chore. It's a miracle this place is still in business.

Upon entering Larry's Diner, I noticed a musty, basement-like smell. Mold? It was also very warm in there, almost to the point where I left it was so uncomfortable. But I wanted to get some quick food and read my book, without running into colleagues, friends, etc., and I'm getting sick of Panera. There were 3-4 employees milling around, and quite a few seniors chatting and watching TV. The TV over the fireplace is a nice addition. It took a minute for me to be seated, but once I was, my waitress was very friendly and attentive. The inside of this place needs work. It appears they may have tried this a few years ago: the floors look new, and there are modern wrought-iron wall hangings and mirrors. But the tables and walls could be painted. There's a large pastry case in front, but there were hardly any pastries occupying the case. Instead there were a few cantaloupes, grapefruits, beers and one cake. The booth I sat was too small, I felt like the 600 pound woman! The seats are too close and too high for the table - and I'm short. Anyway, the food! The menu is diverse like any other Greek diner. I ordered the chicken melt and it was just okay. It satisfied my craving for greasing diner food. But I was given a side of tomato which was just enough for half of my sandwich. The cream of veg soup wasn't that great, I don't think I would order it again. The food quality doesn't justify the prices. Another reviewer mentioned "Restaurant Impossible" and YES, this place definitely could benefit from it. I think Larry's has a lot of potential. It's more like 1.5 stars, since it's not a total failure.

  • Mark K.

I have driven past here many times and finally stopped to have a meal. The service was extremely slow. There were only three other tables with customers and two waitresses on duty. I ordered a turkey club which is hard to mess up and aside from the somewhat soggy fries it was pretty good. My partner ordered the special of the day which was advertised as having chicken breast meat. It was actually thigh meat and tough. After bringing this to the waitresses attention she offered him another selection. He chose a hamburger which he said was below average. I used the men's room and there must be some kind of plumbing issue. The urinals were filled with ice?! I don't think I'll be back.

Larry's has been a Plainfield institution for many years, so I hate to do this, but this place is no longer what it used to be. Atmosphere: The staff and owner have always been hard working and friendly. I feel as if they value my buisness, and they always go out of their way to see that we are happy with the seating and food. I will say that I have never eaten in a restaurant where the table is covered with advertisements. I don't really want to look at adds for lawyers and dentists while I'm eating a sandwich. Also, why is there a man selling fruit from a van in the parking lot? Hahaha. Food:The food is disgusting. I really don't know how else to put it. I ordered a chicken caesar wrap which should be pretty difficult to mess up. The lettuce was brown and the chicken was stringy. I still love their cream of chicken soup. The eight people I was with all hated their food. Mind you, we have gone to Larry's off and on for 8 years or more. My advice: Walk across the street and go to Southern Belle's. It is worth the wait and extra cost (not too much more expensive). You can also drive about less than 10 minutes to Plainfield Delight What to order: Cream of chicken soup

Awesome place! Been coming here for years even before it was Larry's Diner. It's a classic place. I love the rotating dessert display!

Man, I've tried so hard with this place, because I love a good diner, but I just can't anymore. Maybe it's me. I am fail. My latest Larry's experience was on a particularly cold day. I rushed in and stood there for about five minutes before someone noticed me and took me to a seat by a drafty window. I ordered a hot cocoa (because what is better on a cold day than cocoa?), orange juice and a ham & cheese omelet from a friendly waitress. About five minutes later, my OJ came out. I reminded her that I needed some hot cocoa too, and she apologized and assured me she would come back with it. About 10 minutes after that, my food came, but the hot cocoa did not. I asked for my hot cocoa (again) and for some ketchup (the horror!) for my has hash browns. The omelet was serviceable, the hash browns were a little mushy. The ketchup and hot cocoa never made it to the table, although the latter made it to my bill. As noted in other reviews, the interior is dated, but that's not my issue with the place. In the three times I've been to Larry's, I've yet to have service that was both friendly and competent. If I get what I order, I get it with some attitude; if I get friendly service, I invariably don't get what I order. The prices are comparable to Southern Belle's (7.15 versus 7.95 for the same omelet). For the difference in food quality, ambiance and service, it's worth the extra 80 cents to go across the street.

After a roll fell onto the bare table and the waitress picked it up with her bare hand and tossed it back on the pile, the suspension of belief that nobodys bare hands touch my food is gone. Another waitress came back after a loud crash and loudly blurted to a coworker (in front of the whole place) that "I didn't break it, the KID broke it!" (In earshot of the table she'd just left). It was a toddler in a high chair, c'mon lady! I had corned beef hash (straight from a can) and eggs with toast. Its good if you're looking for a greasy spoon with breakfast all day, but don't expect more

  • Jim N.

This is your typical greek diner, except for the decor, which gives it a feel of being in a time warp (especially the chairs). The menu is extensive as they serve breakfast, lunch and dinner here. Larry's seems to get a fairly older crowd, which I take to mean their perception is good food for reasonable prices. Breakfast here is pretty reliable, I usually go with an omlette. BLT is usually my choice for lunch. Service is pretty good, at least what I have experienced. While it won't win any culinary awards, overall Larry's is a pretty solid choice for breakfast or lunch if you are looking for a quick place in the Plainfield area.

  • Noele C.

Dirty, below average food, staff actually started vacuuming under my table while I was still eating. I think they are existing on an increasingly innaccurate old reputation and outdoor seating. Give it a miss.

Been going to Larry's for years and the business really has gone down the toliet.. The place is really dirty and not kept up very well despite the recent remodel.. Since Larry passed the new partner is just a complete rude jerk to his customers and must be the same to his staff because they are rude and not very happy. Food has taken a turn for the bad. I am done going to Larry's I think you could do a lot better at some of the other restaurants around town. Save your money don't waste it at Larry's.

    (1)
  • Jim H.

This is your stereo typical small town diner. You get a lot of food for your money. The skillets are very big too. Sometimes service is a little slow but the wait is worth it. Waitresses are friendly and the atmosphere is unique.

  • Laurie S.

If I could put zero stars I would! GROSS!! This place is nasty!!! You enter under a canopy and the place is DIRTY. Food selections are awful. The rolls could have been bowling balls they were that hard. The salt and peper shakers were filthy! The bathrooms do not lock and are universal!! What is that?? My husbands french dip was like shoe leather and my pork tenderlois was swimming in solidified gravy. The only good thing was the soup. Our server had bad teeth and the booths are worn so bad everytime the person behind me moved my seat rocked! We are new to area and will NOT go back. Stay away. Do not waste your money!!

  • E T.

My experience echos many others here. Driven past many times and finally stopped in to give this place a try. Staff was very friendly. Maybe 5-7 customers at dinner time on a Friday night. We ordered the Patty Melt and Gyros and both were decent simple orders so not bad. But i must say though, this is a pretty dated interior that is not very appetizing. It resembles a creepy nursing home. There are better choices in the area.

We've been here way to many times and it's always awful. Bad food, bad service, rude staff. I think we've finally decided to never go here again. Thank God!!

I've been going to Larry's for about 4 years now, along with my mother and my brothers family. I have 2 kids ages 21/2 and 31/2 they are always welcomed and have a great time with the waitress and John (I think hes an owner and as the kids call him the man with the suckers). The food there is always good even though I'm simple and picky going with a grilled cheese, steak sandwich or the Cajun chicken breast on rice, the rest of the family tries new things all the time and there always good. They have been remodeling over the last few months and i can say its looking really nice and updated. I'm a big fan of the new tables due to being one of the many great companies to advertise on them and also being the one who installed them also. So to wrap up i will continue to go there and would recommend it to all.

  • Brian R.

there is a fine line between being a "dive" and being a "dump" Larry's is a DUMP!!! food took forever and tasted like dish soap. There is nothing inviting about this place unless you're a horror movie fan and want to pretend you are in the latest Rob Zombie film. So my food literally had dish soap in it. After gagging at the table and fighting off the need to vomit, Larry took a nibble of my food from my plate and wondered what was wrong with it. This place provided me with the worse dining experience of my life (and I ate sushi from a gas station in Mississippi).

  • Angie R.

Pretty decent diner type food. The service is always great and the menu is extensive. I've never had a bad meal here. It is what it is and it is a diner. :) The interior is not appealing but if you can get past it then youre good. Portions are huge and the food is ok.

I have been coming to this place since I was 5 years old- the food is great! And huge portions- gyro platter- breakfast and the cream of chicken rice soup is amazing!!! Very clean and welcoming!!
