I have been wondering for years what this restaurant was like . I finally made the long trip to find out . The owner was really friendly . The service was good and very friendly . I loved the period dress that the waitress wear . If you don't know you can either order off the menu or you can get the home style meal. You can add on your drink and desert, which we did . I loved the flower pot bread and homemade strawberry butter . Yummy . The chicken and dumplings were good . Tasted homemade with me is a plus. The fried chicken was good . The fried cod was great per my husband and oldest son . They are two full plates of it ! The salad the best part of the meal. I loved the dressing . It wish they bottled it ! My only complaint was that the veggies were not fresh . I would have thought they would have been . The desert was wonderful , I got the Blondie Browne, with pecan ice cream. My husband got the rhubarb pie and he liked it not loved it . In all the food was good and it was worth the drive .

I rode here with a group of riders this past weekend. Dan was very friendly and the food was awesome. Even with 30 of us, the wait staff was great! They were very attentive and if we needed anything it was right there on the table. They started out with chicken and dumplings (which I might add was maybe the best I've ever had) and then bread baked in a flower pot. Fried chicken, catfish, cod with salad, corn, green beans and the best mashed potatoes and gravy. To finish off the spectacular meal, they had over 30, yes I said 30 deserts. Family style at its finest! All you can eat. And you can't beat it for the price. $12.75 for the meal, or $16 for meal, drink and desert. Definitely worth the drive from St. Louis.

Pioneer's Cabin is great. My wife and I have been there a couple times now and both times it was fantastic. On our most recent visit we each had the family style meal. It came with fried chicken, clam strips, catfish and cod filets, green beans, corn, bread (in a flower pot), chicken & dumplings, mashed potatoes and salad. Everything is all-you-can-eat. This is not a typical buffet, where you get a ton to eat, but none of it is particularly good. The food is just great. The fried chicken is perfectly cooked and tender. The dumplings and mashed potatoes are homemade. No canned or instant here. I had at least 3 helpings of salad, it's awesome. I asked the owner if he'd be willing to give my wife his salad dressing recipe. (The answer was no, but they do sell it.) The staff is very friendly and attentive. We will be back. It is worth the 90 minute drive. If we lived closer I'm sure we would eat here much more than we should.

Family Style Dining is big around here: this includes breakfast (all you can eat eggs, bacon, sausage, biscuit and gravy, and fried taters), and dinners. Sandwiches, burgers, salads, quick and easy specials including roasts, fish or chicken are always available. Family style dinners mostly include fried chicken and that evening's special (baked ham, pork roast, meatloaf, baked turkey, roast beef, or BBQ pork ribs). Plus all the dumplings, veggies of the day, salad, flower pot bread you can eat. And do not forget the dessert (strawberry rhubarb pie for me, cobblers, brownies, cakes, other pies, ice cream desserts (sundaes), root beer floats and more). Old rustic cabin, although newly built, has a good atmosphere, with all the waitstaff dressed old-timey outfits/ style, genuine hospitality, delicious real iced tea served in pint or quart jars. They do have a regular menu if you are a smaller group or not wanting the fixed menu family style offerings: grilled meats, post roasts, Country Fried Chicken, fish, shrimp, chicken and more. Just leave room for dessert.

I cant help but think of the Alabama song 'Down Home', when ever I think of this place. Off of the main road about a half mile, it is in the country, surrounded by woods. It is an Authentic log cabin, not a sidewalled look alike, in fact on the menu tells the story about it, and even where the logs are from. Upon arrival, you pass by thier little country store room, if you have a little wait, you won't be too bored, but we've never had much of a wait. The owner, usually does the greeting, he is a down to earth friendly person, might catch you by surprise that he has one arm, but is great at running and helping out with tasks at hand. You get seated, and they take drink orders promptly, and serve them in mason jars. As soon as you order, very quickly they come out with a giant pot of chicken and dumplings, and a unique 'flourpot bread'. Yes Bread baked in a clay flour pot, my daughter always loves eating the 'hole'. Hot and soft, just pull it apart and butter it or if you want they have strawberry butter as well. The chicken and dumplins are the best you can get, and for that real country style, dip the bread in the dumplin's, that alone is worth the trip. And then before you can even finish the dumplins, they come out with the plates; If you get the family style, they come out by the plate fulls, and you take whats on the plates. Thier other special is Spinach salad. I cant say much cause I dont like spinach, but my wife and kids always ask for more. The chicken, taters/gravy, green beans, corn... Take a few of the chicken batter pieces and crumble them in the Taters and gravy. If it's your birthday, give it a mention, for a special treat. And if it is winter time, they have a nice warm real life fireplace. If in the area this place is a must!!! ---------------------------------------------------------- Down home, where they know you by name And treat you like family Down home, a man's good word and hand shake Are all you need Folks know if they're falling on hard times They can fall back on Those of us raised up down home -----------------------------------------------------------------
