I'm in here probably twice a week. I always get the steak tacos, they are NEVER stingy with the meat and are super affordable. The tortilla chips that they give you when you eat in are amazing, as well as the salsa. The family that owns this restaurant are incredibly nice and hardworking people, occasionally they'll get a little backed up if the place is full, but if you go there and there's hardly any people you'll get your food in minutes. El Zarape is by far the best Mexican restaurant in Peoria and I can't recommend them enough.

Service was great but food was average. The tacos i ordered were goat, tripe, and tongue mexican style on flour tortillas. They could have had more flavor and i thought they were CHEAP on the meat PORTIONS....look at the pics! My tortillas were grilled too long so they were not very pliable. The beef burrito was good but my friend didnt care for the pork inside his burrito. The rice was kind of salty but the beans were ok. The prices are good there especially if you go on the days with the specials. My review is kind of boring this time because thats how i felt about my meal.

Taco Tuesday $1 Beef Tacos. Thirsty Thursday - discounted Mexican Beers and Margaritas. I love the El Pastor Tacos, mexican style on soft corn tortillas.

PORK TACOS - SO. GOOD. corn torillas, onion & cilantro, lime on the side. My husband loves their enmoladas (enchiladas w/ mole). Fresh, delicious, cheap. Couldn't be happier this place moved into the neighborhood.

This is hand's down the best Mexican restaurant in the Peoria area.. I have searched far and wide for good Mexican food as I used to own a place in the Heights.. Cactus Jim's.. anyway El Zarape has great food, quickly.. at very affordable prices.. ask Edgar for the chillianco sauce for your tacos to get that C.J.'s flavor.. either way great food.. good little bar.. friendly folks..

The service and food were great! The ambiance isn't great, the salsa was watered down way too much. The margarita was the best I've ever had! I would definitely go back.

I am SO excited this little Taqueria moved into my neighborhood. They serve awesome Mexican style tacos, they are friendly and fast, super affordable, and the food tastes excellent. Just what West Peoria needed ... an authentic little Mexican place. LOVE.

I was looking for a quick Mexican fix to satisfy that occasional guttural craving that I get for rice and beans. I had driven by El Zarape numerous times on my way....well, its actually not on my way anywhere. But point is, I finally decided to veer off Main into the tiny strip mall where El Zarape is nestled. After making sure my car was locked, I stepped inside to what I've always imagined a Mexican family room to be like. No shortage of colorful decorations, flags and dolls and an entire nursery of children coloring at tables. Some of my dinner comrades are a fan of the motto, "don't poop where you eat," but I can roll with the niños. I ordered the veggie mole enchilada with a side of rice and beans, since that was what led me to this joint in the first place. The abuela taking my order was very nice and helpful and pointed me to the wide array of Mexican sodas in the adjacent fridge. Quit pulling at my heartstrings, I'm a sucker for Jarritos! It was a short wait for my food and before I knew it a hot take out container of comida was mine. Sadly, I was underwhelmed. The corn tortilla was really soggy and there wasn't much flavor to the veggies other than the heap of cheese and green mole sauce on top. I often wonder where I went wrong...perhaps I was just interested in eating rice and beans. Or maybe this is one of those situations where meat eating is just the better choice. Either way, the mediocrity of the food wasn't enough to balance out the authenticity of the atmosphere.

Had dinner on 4/16 here. It is a new place (opened 4/1), but it was pretty busy. It is a small restaurant in the corner of the strip mall where Main turns into Western. The service was great; they were very attentive and fast. The food was delicious. Everything tasted fresh, the salsa, guacamole, and our entrees. Also, it is pretty cheap, stop here before heading to a fast food chain. Please try this new place.

I thought it was good, but not anything terribly different from all the other Mexican places in town. Will go again.

Good food, pleasant person waiting on us, not too expensive -- we'll definitely go back (and no, I don't work there or know the owners). The Zarape burritos with steak and with pork ("El Pastor") were what we had, and we thoroughly enjoyed them.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
