Stopped in for a couple tacos and beer. Pretty good carnitas tacos but the fish was not good. I am moving so i dont know if i will be back here but i know i love the one in highwood (awesome chicken fajitas) so i am sure if i see another tacos el norte i will still go. Also they had a drink machine (the ones that are constantly mixing) and one of them was filled with an off white substance that was turning yellow and fucking disgusting

There are two yelp entries for this establishment. Believe that 1324 Rand is the correct address however this one has the correct name. Food was fine. They ran out of Carne Asada for the dinner entree so went with the burrito option. Ingredients were fresh and the meat wasn't too fatty but still juicy. Perhaps it was because they were low on meat as there was not that much in the burrito but was satisfied with the meat quality. Others in the party ordered various dinner plates and enjoyed them. Guac was solid. After staring at the churros the entire meal decided against my better judgement to get one -it was so stale. Try it out on your next taco tuesday.

This restaurant is alright - solid cheap Mexican cuisine with decent portion size and item selection. In general, Personally, I liked the tacos or tosadas more than other dishes I've tried here. Service can sometimes be a little spotty.

I am a fan of their food! I get the tacos there! YUMMMM - cheap and tasty!

The Papi Burrito is huge! 2 tortillas filled with tons of flavorful meat. A bit too large for me so I like the Grande burrito which comes with avocado. The staff is friendly and everything is made to order. Very reasonable prices and huge portions! We will definitely be back again

My favorite Mexican restaurant! It's a Palatine favorite, if you want good Mexican food, everyone knows to come here! The service is speedy and the food is made fast. The prices are amazing - only about 4.95 for two tacos! The tacos are the best tacos I have ever eaten in my life. They are freshly made and you can tell. They aren't greasy like most taco restaurants. And every time I add avocados to my beef tacos - I never have to pay extra! That is a definite plus considering most people charge extra. The chips and salsa are free of charge and delicious, The chips are nice and warm, I could eat it all day. The horchata is yummy and filling! The atmosphere isn't great - but it's quickly forgotten when one tries the food. I am never not in the mood for this place.

I used to go here all the time for lunch, but when my office moved it became more difficult to get to. I stopped in just to see if it was as good as I remember and I was not let down. I love their steak tacos, nachos, and burritos. They have a classic mexican menu and everything is delicious. This place is the real deal: they even have a juke box that plays spanish music.

It was a authentic Mexican place and the price was good. Get the burrito dinner.

Good, solid (cheap) Mexican. I used to go to the one (I guess they are somehow related) in Edgewater all the time. We ordered a burrito, torta, and two tacos..probably too much for two of us. Everything was really good. Chorizo is excellent-moist, but not too greasy. Delicious! Alittle slow with the refills, but other than that really good. Wish they had more decaf soda choices. Great value!

Happy Cinco de Mayo! Tacos El Norte has some good reviews so we went out of our way to have Cinco de Mayo dinner there. They have an extensive menu with lots of traditional foods you don't always see on menus at Mexican restaurants. It is not a glamorous place - a storefront restaurant with an open kitchen and linoleum tables. We ordered margaritas to start. They serve chips and salsa while you wait. The chips were just okay, but the salsa I found very good. Spicy enough (I like spicy) but not too spicy to burn. I ordered a steak torta. The bread was very good. The meat and other fillings were well seasoned and prepared. My only complaint is that they should either use more fillings in their tortas to fill the bun, or find smaller buns. I ordered mine without the meal so cannot comment on their sides. I had a traditional margarita and my wife had strawberry. My margarita was very good. The strawberry one was a little too sweet for my tastes, All-in-all, not a bad place and one we will return to.

This place is delicious. I'm a fan of their chile relleno and horchata, which comes in a very large cup. The decor inside is not so great. There is a jukebox and random pictures of people on the wall but the service is friendly and fast. The kitchen is open so you can watch them cook. There are chairs at the counter and tables with and without booths.

The flavor train must have left the Tacos El Norte station before I arrived. The best thing going for this hole-in-the-wall are its prices followed by it's speediness to have the food go from grill to plate. Like others have said, the portions are mighty (I swear my burrito weighed over a pound) but it's all negated when something that looks so good tastes so bland. The to-go salsas they provide have a great kick. But that work that heat and flavor into the dish itself. I tried to order a 1/2 pitcher of margaritas to go, and it looked like the waitress wanted to oblige me, but she later ignored my request and I went home beverage free. I'm glad I tried this location because it helps me see that there are tastier Mexican food options closer to home.

I had heard good things about the Tacos El Norte in Lake Zurich, and was hoping that the location in Palatine could be our new hole-in-the-wall find. We were met with smiling and polite waitresses that brought us chips and salsa and their novel of a menu. There were a number of items that looked and sounded appetizing but we settled on Pollo en Mole (Chicken with a Mole Sauce) with Corn Tortillas and a Two Taco dinner combination, where one was Carnitas (pork) and the other Chicharrones (Pig Skin) as well as an enchilada. And they were both accompanied with refried beans (with mozzarella cheese) and rice. I started with a fantastic Pina Colada and was hoping that it was a positive foreshadowing for the meal to come. It wasn't. When the food arrived, the chicken (which took the longest to cook) was the only hot item on our table. Everything else had gone luke-warm. The Pollo en Mole was basically a chicken breast that had been flattened and charred on both sides to the point of being overcooked, and was slathered in a loose mole where the oil was beginning to separate. It was edible. It was fine. It did not rock my face off, and I probably will never order it again. The tacos were small and relatively insignificant. We started with the Carnitas - which was the highlight of the plate. It was tasty and moderately enjoyable, but the pork pieces were overcooked and tough, which then became lodged between out teeth - good thing they were cut up so small. The Chicharrone taco was completely inedible for one of us. It was blazing hot, and it burned the face off the one of us who ordered it. He would rather next time order anything else off the menu, or even not order at all. There was no flavor at all, it was just pure heat. Just thinking about it now puts me into a fury. What's the point of that? All in all, there are so many hole-in-the-wall Mexican restaurants near us, we have the right to be picky. We would sooner try some of the other ones, but wouldn't rule out going back to Tacos El Norte. P.S. the enchilada was worthless. It was dry, somehow soggy, with no flavor, no filling, and a complete waste of our time. Don't bother with it.

The ladies I work with swear by this place. So on Valentine's Day the whole department went out to lunch here. Everyone enjoyed what they got. I along with several others tried the steak quesadillas and loved them. They had a lot of cheese and good quality meat. It comes with sour cream and the green salsa on the table is really good! Others had the fish tacos which they thought were really good, I'm not sure I would trust fish from here but they enjoyed it. If I were to go back I would try a torta, a few of my coworkers got that a raved about them. They come in chicken, pork, steak, etc and looked really yummy.

  • Gargoyle Q.

Their tacos are pretty good, along with their salsa's. Yum! I'll admit, I have had better, but I can't complain they did a pretty decent job in my opinion. One thing I loved was that someone there was having a birthday party, and there were guys there playing guitars and singing Feliz Cumpleanos. It really set the mood, and it had a great vibe through the whole place.

  • Brian J.

Staff needs to be better trained on answering questions about food and service. The check contained an item we did not order. Fortunately we caught it before we paid. Very disappointing.

  • Lucie M.

I love this place. Delicious Mexican food, with a variety of choices for a really good price. Their atmosphere is a little odd, but not unfriendly. It's got a neighborhood hangout feel and during the day it usually has Mexican soap operas or soccer games playing. At night, especially on the weekends, it becomes a full-blown dance club! Definitely one of a kind! It could be a little cleaner, but I'm not concerned about it. It's worth it for the price and the great food.

  • A L.

I could swear that the sign said El Taco Norte, but whatever. I really like their tacos. Cheap and yummy. I also like their free chips and salsa. You can ask for more. They have bottled beer at reasonable prices but I prefer draft. Cops sure like this place. I see special Palatine cops there all the time wearing body armor over street clothes. I think they are a gang task force or something of that sort. These guys are young and fit. I also see Cook County Sheriff cops in spiffy uniforms. These guys are old, grizzly and not so fit. For some reason these two groups would be on opposites sides of the room, as far apart as they could be, and not even glancing at each other.

Apparently Tacos El Norte is a chain, but I only know this restaurant, owned by a Latino family and fully staffed by Latinos/Latinas. As you're seated at a table, you receive chips and salsa with the menu. I order lemonade and my other half orders the fruit punch and they arrive in large glasses. As Samantha L mentioned the meals come with refried beans and rice and as Mark F stated the entrees are massive. My favorite is the beef enchilada: delicious beef--nothing else--wrapped in a tortilla. As Erik P and Alison H mention, this is 100% authentic Mexican; therefore, nothing is added by the cook: you can add your own flavors at the table if you ask for them. The prices are good and the portions are so large you always take something home. I have only eaten in the restaurant twice, but I get carry-out at least twice a month. Village Note: Mark F's review included a request for liquor to go, but the Village of Palatine has strict rules that do not allow businesses to provide carry-out for those beverages. The Village even has rules about not bringing liquor *in* unless it's a private party.

  • Alexa E.

I've been here twice, but always get carryout. The atmosphere is mediocre, so I don't mind carrying out. The food is really authentic and I enjoy watching them make my food. =)

Inexpensive Mexico food and friendly staff. Don't let the surrounding neighborhood alarm you (I've heard many people ignorantly claim they don't want to go here because it's a bad neighborhood.) The menu is extensive and offers combo specials for both lunch and dinner. They occasionally have a DJ with a dance floor on some weekends.

Worst mexican place I've ever been. The place is so dark. You walk in and just feel awkward. The menus have ads all over them. Sorry I don't go to a taco place to find a realtor or hair dresser. Im part mexican and can make better food then this. My tacos had barely anything on them. The "rice water" tasted like pure water. The green sauce was a joke. Then we went to pay and was charged for things we didnt order, My husband didnt catch it so i called and she tried telling me it was right so we counted each item price over the phone with her and once i was proved right she said "oh yeah she charged you for an extra drink" Which was still wrong but i gave up. We went to go get our change the next day and no one had any idea what we wer talking about. After all that i got a whole 2.50 back when i should of got 5. Never again will I go back. Pure awful.

I love their Burritos and have a serious addiction to the salsa. It's been an ongoing obsession for years. Cheap and OH so Yummy. Go Here.

We really used to liked this place but it's getting very run down. The food and service are still good, but it's getting so shabby that I worry about the cleanliness of the food. I hope the owners give the thorough cleaning and touch up that it so deserves.

About Taco Bell

Taco Bell is a haven for Mexican delicacies such as tacos, quesadillas, burritos, nachos, and other specialty items. Owned by Yum! Brands, Inc. Taco Bell is one of the fastest growing American chains of fast food restaurants. The restaurant operates from 7,072 different locations which are mostly run by independent franchisees and licensees.

The background story of Taco Bell is interesting and inspiring for budding entrepreneurs. The fast-food brand is the brainchild of Glen Bell, who started his first food venture as a hot dog seller in San Bernardino, California. The year was 1948. After witnessing long queues outside a Mexican restaurant called Mitla Café across the street, Bell saw the opportunity and demand for hard-shelled Tacos. He reverse-engineered the recipe and later started selling Tacos and called the venture Taco-Tia.

Later, the name changed from Taco-Tia to El Taco. Eventually, Glen Bell sold the company to his partner and opened the first Taco Bell in Downey in 1962. By 1964, the restaurant also got its first franchise in Torrance. The 100th Taco Bell restaurant was opened by 1965. PepsiCo acquired Taco Bell from Glen Bell in 1978 and the restaurant brand is currently a subsidiary of Yum! Brands which looks after the restaurant business of PepsiCo.

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate.
