Mexican Cuisine
If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.

I found myself back in the little town of Ottawa, Illinois again this year with a bunch of friends. As we reviewed options in the city, I thought the safest bet, given my bad experience with Thai in this city last year, was Mexican. So we headed over to La Fondita Mexican Grill. Located in a strip mall, this unassuming casual restaurant offered good, old-fashioned Mexican fun. What is Mexican fun? That would be watching your friends consume massive amounts of margaritas before your eyes. Yes, kids -- it is possible for someone to consume 100 ounces of margaritas and live through it as I've now born witness to this. It was pretty spectacular. When we walked in, there were just a few booths occupied. They rearranged the tables to bring a bunch together to accommodate our large party that had no reservation. This city is much easier to get a table in than DC! It is a very small restaurant with loud colors of green, orange, and red on the walls. The tables were cheap wood and the chairs were your standard vinyl seats. All around the dining room, the message was "drink more" with banners of Corona and Miller Lite across the ceiling and bottles of tequila in the back. I ordered a regular sized margarita while some of my friends started with the Monster-size. Goodness gracious. As I never really know what to trust in Mexican restaurants, I usually just go with the Mexican fajitas. I ask the questions I need to: Is the rice cooked with chicken stock?; Are the beans made with lard?; Are the vegetables cooked in butter?; etc. Then, I enjoy the chips and salsa as I wait, which were, by the way, exceptionally good. The veggies came out steaming on a cast iron skillet as they usually do in most restaurants. There were bell peppers, mushrooms, broccoli, zucchini, onions, and squash in a LOT of oil. It was way too oily for me. As I told them no sour cream and cheese, they instead offered me fresh avocado. Yes, I will take that instead! There were refried beans without lard, lettuce, tomato, and salsa as toppings. It wasn't anything to write home about, but it was food in a city where vegan options are scarce. The servers were very attentive, helpful, and nice. Luckily there were enough of us that did not drink excessively to chauffeur those who did. My friends who consumed nearly 100 ounces of margaritas cite the picture I took of them starting on ounce number 50 is the last thing they remembered from that night. Margaritas make everything better. So, in the end, the servers were great and attentive, the food was oily, but edible, the price of $9 for my meal was incredibly inexpensive, and the chips and salsa were very good. I'd come back here in a heartbeat.

Seriously the best mexican food I have ever had. I like in an hispanic area in Chicago and the food is still not as good as it is here. Not only is the food delicious, the portion sizes are huge! The margaritas are large compared to what you can get in the city and cheap too. This resruant is fmaily owned and I walways support that! I will be back and I'll be hungry

We love this place. The Fajita Nachos are the best. The staff is always friendly and attentive and the meal arrives quickly. It's clean and it has a bright and cheery decor.

My favorite Mexican restaurant in town. Okay service, always with a smile. The white cheese sauce is just about the best thing I've ever eaten.

I was disappointed. All 4 of us ordered the Fondita Combo, since we'd never been there before. We did order different fillings. The waiter brought out 3 of the meals. It took over 5 minutes to get his attention to ask where the 4th meal was. 5 mins later it was finally brought to the table. Not one of us got what we'd ordered. Plus they drowned everything in a red sauce so it all tasted the same. We all thought it was very salty. Won't be going back.

Fondita gave me some excitement I "might" be able to find something close to real Mexican cuisine in Ottawa Illinois. Generally speaking a cozy little town with lots of great eats, even authentic thai as good as any in LA, but never true Mexican food which typicaly is the american sort of ground beef, lettuce, cheese, and sour cream taco bell style food. I took a chance on the carne asada tacos, the simplest of traditional taqueria foods, and it was disgusting. Carne asada starts with a marinade. Period. This steak wasn't marinated, or even seasoned, and loaded with gristle and fat, and not the traditional flank cut. They were served on huge raw tortillas, with onion and cilantro, no salsa to speak of in the tacos. Couldn't eat more than a few bites, absolute blasphemy to sell this as Mexican food. $9 for three of these things plus a drink, expensive by standard of the best Los Angeles mexican restaurants. Ottawa would really benefit from a legitimate Mexican restraunt, with someone who knows how to cook authentic Mexican food, which is delicious. This place certainly is not that, not recommended.

I am a frequent summer visitor to silver leaf resorts in nearby Sheridan, Il and last weekend I wanted something different to eat, so I thought I would give them a try... I ordered the fajita burrito and it was excellent...good food and good value

This is the kind of place Ottawa has needed for a long time; they have authentic yet affordable Mexican cuisine. Their homemade salsa is hot, but very flavorful; it has just the right touch of cilantro that you just don't get from store-bought salsa. My personal recommendations are any of the enchiladas and the Mexican rice with cheese...

Excellent! I had the Molcajete per Mark S. recommendation, and was greatly impressed. This is a lot of food! Flavorful and spicy! Lots of people say spicy and I laugh, this actually had heat to it. I will definitely stop in on any future trips to Ottawa.

While staying at a local hotel I was fortunate enough to stumble upon this one week old Mexican restaurant. It's in the new shopping plaza across from the new Wal-Mart Superstore. I often judge a Mexican restaurant by their chips and salsa alone. The freshness/warmth of the chips and especially the salsa can often say a lot about the quality and freshness of the main course. They were off to a good start here. The service was fast and friendly. The food was really good. Since I'm not from the area I can't compare it to the many other Mexican restaurants I found listed on Yelp before i set out for dinner. What I can share with others that read this review is that the food was fresh, fast, and very tasty. My Fondita Fajitas (Steak, Chicken, and Shrimp) was served in under 10 minutes and was almost too much to finish. All of their prices were very affordable! My fajitas were around $13...for steak, chicken, and shrimp. A yummy cheese dip appetizer was $2.99. Go to a chain Mexican restaurant and you might pay $8 for the same thing. All I can say is I would definitely go back the next time I'm in town. Which is about the best compliment you can give to any restaurant, especially a new one.

Had heard bad things shortly after they opened, GLAD we gave them a chance. Quick service, attentive waiters flavorful food. The Chori Polo is to die for.

Food is so-so. I'm not a fan.

Had lunch there for the first time and just so so. Chips tasted way to greasy but salsa was good. Ordered a cheese enchilada and a beef taco. I wanted to say where is the cheese? Enchilada came on plate by itself, covered with sauce. Small with a pittance of cheese inside with nothing on top of it. Taco ok but beef mixture was pulverized. Rice was good but beans were runny. Husband had a pulverized beef tostada and said never again. Have to agree!

Great food and a great value! I have a family of 4 and always am worried when we go out to eat. This place has the best bang for your buck! I am also from California so I am very judgmental when it comes to mexican food. I was thoroughly impressed and look forward to eating here! Great chips and salsa and great fajitas! No crazy charges for random things and a great staff!
