Pop's is probably the closest beef stand and maybe even food place to my house. My family and I have been coming here since I can remember due to its convenient location. I don't think I could count the number of beef sandwiches or burgers I've had from here. I personally don't think it's anything really that special. I think Buona and Portillo's make a superior beef sandwich, and also that recently Pop's has started to skimp on quantity perhaps without even altering prices. It's really a hit and a miss, sometimes the beef is juicy and flavorful, other times it's pretty dry and meh. Not really a hot dog guy but from what my folks say the dogs are pretty good. I've personally had the burgers many times, which are also not bad. The chicken sandwiches are decent, the salads OK, fries average, gyros are just mediocre too. Nothing really "wows" me about Pop's, perhaps it's because I've eaten there so many times and have become too used to it. The staff on the inside is just OK, too. Sometimes friendly and accommodating, other times pretty feisty and in-your-face, especially if there's any issues with your order. Just the other night my mother ordered a Maxwell street polish and asked if it was grilled, they told her yes, but when she got home, of course, not grilled! 3 stars for convenient location by my house and hit or miss food that is usually alright. I'll have to try one of the other locations to compare 143rd & Wolf to, based on the reviews they are a little different!

It's pops. Only go there if you don't feel like driving far/making dinner. It's an easy place to run in and grab a hotdog/beef and fries.

Coming from an employee at the original Pop's Italian Beef & Sausage in Palos Heights, the one in Orland can't compare. Every time I go in the employees are rude to the customers. The food quality wasn't that great to deal with the poor customer service. If you have the time, and are willing for the drive go to the other Pop's in Orland, Tinely, or even Palos.

Good food, even as it's too much!! Good prices. Perfect location for our stay w/my sister in Orland. I had a beef w/hot and sweet peppers. Not hot peppers, they are actual raw, sliced jalapenos!! Good, but not expected. Guess i was looking for giardinera. Very big sandwich!! Large fries was HUGE. Kids (my two plus my neice) had burger, hot dog, chicken sandwich, shakes and fries plus i ordered my brother-in-law a double cheeseburger to go. Not even $20 for all that and we brought home enough fries for B-I-L's burger. Great go to place.

An above average sandwich shop. A little overpriced for what you get. Over $11 for 2 hot dogs a 2 small drinks! Better the second time!!!

Another beef joint with sandwiches that have no taste. Ordered a beef with green peppers, the sandwich had no taste what so ever. Had to salt and pepper to choke it down. Also it was so wet half way through the bread broke apart, making it very hard to eat. I will say that the staff seemed friendly enough. My only complaint would be that the tables got use a good cleaning, my arms kept sticking to the table.

Have been to other Pops and loved it..This one sucks!!! Fries were cold and tasted as they had been sitting around a long time...Hot dogs was luke warm and had a piece of black fuzz on the bun...Asked two employees if they could fill the ketchup dispenser and was given a blank stare then they went back to the conversation they were having... It was not refilled in the half of hour I was there. Upon leaving, I asked to talk to the manager and nicely informed him of my experience. He asked what I wanted him to do about it? I said.. nothing, just thought the review would help your business in the future. His comment was, " Are you wanting your money back or something? I told him, no just thought you may want to know.....His reply was, OK then....and he walked away... Save your money and drive a few miles to Rosie's in Frankfort. Their food is wonderful and they at least act like they want customers!

The Italian Beef is the staple and excellent with sweet peppers. The gyros are also well worth it as well. Fries are average but tasty with ketchup. I usually eat at a Pop's when I'm in the south Chicago area as they are common and consistent.

I think I have over dosed on Pops this week. My second trip to this location in a week. I had the three dogs with fries and they were very tasty. The second time I had the gyros with fries. The pita was thin so you didn't get filled up on the breading. The meat was piled high and had lots of sauce on it. The fries are always a favorite in the big bag. They were geared up for the Super Bowl as one after the other, people were leaving with their catering orders.

You're thinking, "Why is this dude giving Pop's Beef only one star?" My issue isn't with the food. It's more so how the employees act and their inability to understand simple requests. Those two issues, when compounded, make it increasingly hard for me to frequent this restaurant. They have great Italian beef sandwiches, and my mom loves their shrimp dinner. She's addicted, so there's that. They get one star for that alone, but you cannot have terrible customer service and expect people to come back, no matter how great the food is. I procured a few gyros after they started offering them at $3.00 each. I once asked for light tatziki sauce, because they initially drowned them in it. Too much of a good thing is still too much, after all. Instead of light tatziki sauce, I received none. They offer call-in ordering, so you can pick up your food quicker and be on your way. I ordered a shrimp dinner, a three hot dog special, and an italian beef sandwich with hot peppers. The employee on the phone asks me when I'd like to pick it up, and I tell them in 20 minutes. I arrive within 20 minutes, and the FINE employees at this establishment haven't even started making any part of the order. The employee I spoke to explains it's because they're wary of prank callers, and I concede but I ask why they even offer it in the first place if such is the case? It's irritating to offer it, but not actually. I also get to feel like an idiot, not cool. Today, I come in and order a double hamburger special(Double cheeseburger/hamburger with large fry). I ask for no cheese on the hamburger. I clarified for the cashier, "I want everything but cheese on the hamburger, okay?" And I assume she understood. I want to pay with debit card, but jerk employee from the call-in experience is using the fax machine, so I pay with cash. Food is ready in about 6 minutes. My number is called and I grab the food. I leave. I drive 5 miles back home, and behold! They put absolutely nothing on the hamburger. That's fine with me. Mistakes do in fact happen. I call Pop's up and explain to the cashier who rang up what happened. Her initial response is insisting that I asked for it plain. I repeat, as politely as can be, that I asked for everything but cheese on it. She's the same employee who was snarky about light tatziki sauce. She requests that I bring the screwed up hamburger back. And I have difficulty accepting that, because I don't want to walk back into the goddamn place with a hamburger in hand, like some schmuck, but she insists! I concede, bring the hamburger back, and put it down on the counter and ask for my money back. She looks at me with disgust and says, "Excuse me?". "I lost my appetite, I would please like my money back", and she's staring at fax machine guy, probably looking for him to intervene and tell me to get out or something as delusional as that, so he tells her to hit the coupon key and refund me for the price of the hamburger. Before walking out, again, politely, tell her that I didn't appreciate being treated as though I was trying to scam a hamburger out of them, and she smugly says, "Thank you". So, hey. The food is great. I won't argue that, never will, but the employees here need to be trained in customer service(And I don't mean some nonsense along the lines of "the customer is always right"), I mean treating your customers with a miniscule amount of respect so they don't feel too disgusted to come back in. And I won't come back in, unless I hear from management about this bullshit. Thanks for reading! EDIT: I heard back from management, and another twist to this story! As I mentioned earlier, call in order jerk was using the fax machine, and my debit card didn't seem to go through, so I paid with cash instead. Guess what? My debit card purchase was in a sort of limbo. The payment remained pending for 5 days, which to those who are sticking to a budget, can mean quite a bit. Imagine you're buying food for a larger group of people, not enough for catering, but just enough to where you're spending $50-80, and their card reader decides to crap out on you and you opt to pay with cash, and it turns out that it went through just enough to grab the money out of your account and hold it hostage. That money is unavailable to you until you file a dispute over the transaction with your bank(a nightmare) or it releases the money back to you. Tell me this: Can you, with the economy as bad as it is, afford to deal with that? I know I can't. And onwards to my chat with the general manager. Apparently it's very much so store policy to demand customers to bring fucked up food back in. They could be gracious and not tell you to bring it back in to have it swapped out, or refunded, but they think we, their customers, are a bunch of lying thieves, isn't that lovely? They must see the food and inspect it themselves, and grumble at the nerve of their lowly customers to claim their food wasn't made as requested.

Had some food today, and I have to say that this place is nothing special. Had the chicken meal and the chicken was bland, very bland. Seems like they don't season their chicken much. The 1-lb shrimp is just average. They do not pay attention to detail, try to serve as many customers as they can without looking into quality control. One order of fires comes out burned the other fine, how could that be? So service is fast as well as the food, but lacks quality.
(2)
Julie O.
I have to completely disagree with the other yelpers on this one. I knew the Pop's name from Evergreen Park and thought I would get the same quality and service. I was wrong! The first time we ate here it was okay. Nothing special, but passable. The second time around, I ordered a cheeseburger and fries. I got my burger and it was COLD. As in not cooked all the way through. As in not pink, not raw, but STILL FROZEN in the middle. Not a place I will return to.

I ordered the 9in. Italian beef and onion wings with honey mustard. Total came to under $10. It seems kind of like and Italian fast food place only better. Although nothing comes on the sandwich other than meat, bread, and 'the juice' (as the lady behind the counter called the meat juice) it was pretty good. The meat didn't have an out of this world taste but it was still worth it. I would eat there again.

Have been going here off and on for many years, not a constant buyer but at least 6 times a year. Well, I stopped by there recently, and was thinking about a polish, never had one there, and asked if they can char grill. Yes they can! The manager or owner suggested I get the polish char, but its addicting, and it is. I have stopped now 3 times in 3 weeks and its great with mustard and onions. He also asked if I wanted the polish on a hotdog bun and its better on that. BTW they will char grill the hot dogs too! Nice change to the steam and a little more flavor that way. The only complaint is the fries, they just don't taste good, a cheap frozen quality. They would be better off going to a fresh cut like the great hot dog stands in the city and north side do. It's a good value too it comes with fries for 3 bucks and a drink all for under 5. With the economy the way it is this place has good values all over the menu.

I've been here several times now. Can't say the counter help was ever rude but they certainly are not very friendly or very welcoming with all the personality of a wet mop. But on to the food. The beef and Italian sausage are decent but not as good as the original Mr. Beef just west of wolf road on 143rd. The hot dogs and polish are definitely not beef and look sort of grey which really kind of puts you off. Interesting, I asked if they had maxwell street Polish sandwiches which are grilled and served with mustard, grilled onions and sport peppers and told they did. What I received was a steamed grey polish mustard, no grilled onions 2 sport peppers 1 small sweet pickle ??? and a dill spear. So I would not recommend them. The corned beef was no Mannie's Deli, but not bad. Fries are always good and crisp. The salads are overpriced and can be hit or miss. A better suggestion would be Portillo's on 159th and harlem for salads and hot dogs. The italian breaded steak was just ok, no where near the quality of the ones at Ricobene's or any place in Bridgeport. In fairness this is the only location I have visited so maybe the other location are better.

I have been here many times in the past and with the family too. The food is not that great at all. That's sad because the Palos pops is great food. The hot dogs are gross with stale buns, burgers taste like the gas from the grill and greasy gyros. They actually just mark the burgers on the grill then just throw them in some pan full of grease and who knows what. But what I really hate about this place. The PEOPLE that run the place. They are so rude never polite and nice, Just cold and rude. They never greet you,say hello, thank you or anything . If you don't have customers you don't work genius. They act like they are doing me a favor by giving this me swill. I would love to eat here all the time, I am so close. But I drive all the way to Palos. The food rocks there and they love their customers.

I'm giving two stars for inconsistency and customer service issues. Some things, like soups and burgers can be good. Italian beefs are usually okay, but I got a beef and cheddar croissants, big mistake. They use the melted processed "uncheese" and the thing was sopping wet, not dipped, dripping wet. I actually dropped it, and au jus splashed all over my shirt. I went up to the counter, told her my issue, and I got an eye roll. When explaining my dilemma to the cook, she kept pointing at me and looking annoyed. While waiting, I filled my iced tea cup and saw it was nearly empty, flow out was minimal. Same employee was leaning against the counter, and I told her about the tea. She looked me dead in the eye, at the tea, rolled her eyes again and went to the side by the cooks. Awesome!

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.
Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.
If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.

The food is really good and always great service. Perfect for when you need something quick and easy. Pops, thanks for being a good quick weekend option for my family and me.

Awesome!
