. Ordered for the office today at lunchtime. There were seven of us. The food was picked up and delivered to our office by an outside vendor. I swear to GOD, every time we order from Portillos, something in the order is missing. Today we were missing 5 orders of breadsticks. Why is it so damn hard to get an order for 7 right? It's not brain surgery, is it?? This has happened not once, not twice, not even three times. It happens EVERY SINGLE TIME. The last time we ordered, one of us (it was I) ended up with no lunch whatsoever. I am so done even bothering to order from you guys any more.

Visited Chicago for an extended weekend last week. My uncle took me here for dinner and glad he did. Being from NYC I know good food but the Italian beef on a crossiant blew me away. Amazing. Great food, great ambiance
(5)Vaibhav V.
Chicago's most famous hot dog institution definitely does the job. Their Jumbo Hot Dog comes with every topping: mustard, relish, onions, tomatoes, pickles, etc. Their Jumbo Chili Dog is solid as well: flavorful, cheesy, messy, and good. In the end, I'll be sure to come here again for cheap hot dogs (a very large meal for less than $8). It's a good old chain, but ultimately, nothing about it really blew me away.
(3)Mike P.
Store was super super busy and the beef was excellent The service was good for how busy it was Was the best beef sandwich hey put on lots of beef and cheddar cheese I was impressed Great job there was about 150 cars in the drive threw
(5)Bria S.
Absolutely amazing!!! The big beef with hot peppers and gravy is on point as always! I visited Chicago once before and only had a taste, this is only the second time and my boyfriend happened to join me as well as my dad and he loved it!! And even took a polish dog to go!
(5)Ashley K.
Great hot dogs, burgers, and salads! You can't come to Chicago without experiencing Portillos is a staple for our city and you'll realize why after the first bite. Throw a chocolate shake and some fries in with your order too!
(5)Cindy A.
I detest the drive thru because the wait is just so bad some days. Once I waited over a half hour only to realize they missed an item. If you have a large or custom order most times it will be messed up or items missed because they're rushing or not paying attention since they're busy talking to each other about their personal lives. There's been times I've had to go back and get the order corrected or the remaining items that I paid for. I do love their Italian beef and chocolate cake though. If it wasn't for good food this place would get less stars.
(3)Rob E.
Stopped by this week after flying in. The food is still as good as ever: the combo sandwich and fries. Too bad there are no locations near my home, but it gives me something to look forward to when traveling to Chicago.
(4)Sweatytoothed M.
Never had a bad burger, a bad dog, a bad fry. Never have I asked, "What are they doin'?!" Portillo's is in control and my nose is leading me there! An Italian combo, dipped with peppers?? Let's go! A delicious big 'ol burger with extra pickles?? Let's go! How 'bout a chocolate cake shake???? YES! The service is fast and friendly. The food is ALWAYS on point. Done.
(5)Fatima M.
Visiting Chicago from Cali and was told I had to give it a try. My in laws live in town, so this was on the list. We ordered the Maxwell Polish, Italian Beef and Fries. The polish was good! Had a nice snap to the bite and great flavors. The fries were fresh and crisp and the Italian Beef was really good, but came second to the Patio's Italian Beef. Glad I experienced it, wouldn't say No to coming back.
(3)Lindsey W.
Great place! The food is amazing and the price is great as well. Whenever I'm in the area I make sure to stop in and get their Italian beef with a piece of chocolate cake.
(4)John C.
Hot dogs and Italian beef. Hot dogs and Italian beef. Hot dogs with everything and Italian beef with hot peppers. Great Chicago style place. Highly recommended and always on my agenda when i " come home for a visit"!
(5)Lb B.
Portillos sucks at the oak lawn location. Their service is deplorable. Wait times are exceedingly long for simple orders. And they do not give you free cake on your birthday, even when you show uour license they still refuse to give you the cake. Do not go to this location. Service is horrid!!!
(1)Jackie T.
Lovvvveeee it! No matter what you order its amazing. Couldnt go wrong with this place. And they are extremely fast which is great when youre on your lunch break!
(5)Chris C.
Decent, nothing special. Could probably go to any other hot dog, burger, or Italian beef place in the area and get the same quality of food for half the price and a shorter wait.
(2)Erika M.
My family all got the Italian beef and there was silence. They were so busy eating! They all agreed this was the best stop of our trip to Chicago. I got the hot dog and it was very good.
(4)Susan F.
I was in town to see my son and daughter- in-law who live pretty close. Ordered Italian beef sandwich with peppers and a diet coke. It was yummy but on my drive home a few hours later my stomach started cramping and all day today it has been a real GI roller coaster. I liked the food but not so much when it makes me sick. Don't think I'll be back for awhile...sorry.
(1)Kristin M.
Pretty much the same as other portillos, always really crowded but with good food. The drive through it always a support long line but it goes quickly. Check your order before you drive away. There's been a couple times where they had my order wrong!
(4)Becky A.
You think portillos is a well oiled machine until they fuck up your order and instead of just refunding your money they make you jump through hoops and fill out an "incident report" and then Maybe you'll get your money back. Assholes.
(1)Court W.
The Italian beef and fries were awesome!! The food did take a little while to finally get, but well worth the wait!
(4)Staci J.
As long as I've been coming here, I've never been disappointed with my food. I ordered an Italian beef double dipped with hot peppers and a side order of cheese fries. My Italian beef was just awesome as it was very flavorful and dipped to perfection. I really didn't need the cheese fries but it completed my meal. I'll always come back here for the great food and service. There's always a line at the drive through so don't be impatient!
(5)Art V.
Portillo's has good fast food and they have great salads which is a good option if you're trying to be healthy they also offer some of the best beef sandwiches I've had in a long time. Great place for the family or an afternoon quick bite to eat!
(4)Jamaal C.
Always great. The atmosphere is live. Family orientated. Causal dress. Long lines for drive thru. Quicker to go inside. Love the beef not dipped with sweet peppers an mozzarella cheese.
(4)Mike K.
I'm essentially describing every Portillos when I say this but this place is a well oiled machine. The assembly line staff pumps orders out in one of the most behind the counter opertaions I'v ever seen. Just a tip: even if you're getting it to go, sometimes it's just better to go inside because that drive-thru line can get ridiculous. Chicago staple and a must have for any visitors/tourists you have visiting. I'm the guy who loves uber touristy things. You could take me to the most exotic place in the world but if they have a Margaritaville I'll probably wind up there. Same with Portillos and all the crap they have on the walls. I love it and it just adds to the effect. Personal favorites: Big Beef Dipped with hot peppers or the chopped salad. Cheese fries are insane too.
(4)Sabrina A.
I love portillos. When I am visiting from out of town this is one of the places I must go. I love it so much. The prices are very good the people are very friendly and the food is just plain good. Nothing fancy about it just good food Try the cake shake it's a life changer.
(4)Richard R.
If this place were in Atlanta, I would say GREAT JOB and be far less picky. But in my hometown, I expected a little more. THE SCENE Portillo's didn't exist in this location when I was a teen. It's also a name I'd never heard of until today. My uncle made the suggestion to eat here because he thought the kids would like it. I'm so glad he's not a yelper, because I wouldn't want him to know that we didn't really find the food here enjoyable. We are clearly in the minority, because it was so crowded you could barely find a table. Not only inside, but the drive thru was also extremely busy. I really don't understand why because there are so many better places to get great food in this city. I must admit the decor was ultra cool, it has a great vibe and streamline operation. There were so many people waiting to help you, including extra personnel to take your order while standing in line. They did the same in the drive thru which I thought was really cool. THE FOOD However, aside from a great looking decor, vibrant atmosphere and awesome service... the main reason for coming to any restaurant is the food. I ordered the Italian Beef combo and I was sorely disappointed. They didn't dip my sandwich. What does that mean you ask? Most every Chicagoan I know wants their Italian Beef dipped in the juices created during the cooking process. This "gravy" is known as the au jus. Every one knows you gotta get your bun dipped! That's just the way it is. Aside from the lack of being dipped, they didn't include any giardiniera. So I went back to the pick-up line and asked for both. Ahhhhh, now that's much better. Overall this classic Chicago sandwich had decent flavor but was not as good as I have found @ Mr. Beef or Al's (original location). My children ordered average tasting hamburgers and my wife ordered a grilled vegetable panini, which she really disliked. The fries tasted like any frozen variety I could purchase to cook myself from any grocery store. Maybe we should have just had the hot dogs other reviewers rave about. THE VERDICT I didn't think it was possible to eat a mediocre Italian Beef sandwich in the Chicagoland area, but I was wrong. It actually disturbs me that this place is so popular. Have the standards in Chicago changed or am I having a taste bud malfunction? Either way, Portillo's just didn't wow me. Yelp100[67]
(3)Bobby L.
I Love Portillos . We come here all the time and its always the same great taste. They have good salads, juicy hotdogs\polish, good chicken sandwiches, good tuna sandwiches, and you have to have fries and root beer to go with your meal. We only had them mess up on the order once or twice but the food is consistent. Its fun for kids to watch the people in the kitchen cook with big flames and clouds of steam. The indoor line moves quickly,Do not go to the drive thru unless you like to wait in a sea of cars. If you come on the summer bring a jacket because the fans are always on so its cool on the inside. There is something for everyone on the menu and they have dessert and beer which we haven't had yet. This is good food at its best .
(5)Chris S.
Portillos beef is so sub-par it's ridiculous, it's so over cooked it should be called Portillos jerky with watery juice. Its not just this location its every Portillo's everywhere. I don't think of McDonalds when I think of delicious hamburgers and I don't think of Portillos when I think of delicious beef.
(1)EMarie F.
I always enjoy the food at this Portillo's location. The service is fast (even on busy days) and the food is great!
(5)Connie L.
Can you say YUMMY! i love their Italian beef combo! The staff is always nice. Its a great atmosphere. My son's and i love going to this particular one! See you there Sunday...maybe sooner lol
(4)Alicia J.
Love the food here, everytime I come I'm in heaven. Love it. The staff is great the get your order out to you with plenty of speed.
(5)Ralphlia W.
OMG!! This was the best Italian combo I've ever had! I will definitely be back. It was worth the drive. The beef was tender, the sausage was cooked perfectly. I LOVED it!
(5)Danielle B.
Portillos have the best cheese fries. Food is always nice and fresh and hot when I come.
(5)Kevin F.
Hot was bit salty. Don't know why because usually better than this. Yelp needs to stop telling me how long reviews need to be.
(1)Denise D.
Portillo's is pretty good, yes. My biggest complaints: The music is obnoxious and the smell (if one eats there) lingers on the clothes. They should invest in a better air circulation system! Now, someone bring me a piece of this chocolate cake I've been reading about!
(3)Daniel P.
The food is pretty good. I mostly stick to burgers and Italian beef sandwiches, fries or onion rings. The chocolate cake shake is pretty awesome. They are a bit expensive, even though the food is pretty good. I feel like I often eat more than I need when ordering a double burger and regular fries (their smallest size).
(4)Irineo B.
Another portillo dussapointment. I ordered a big beef and the meat was lacking. What happened to the Portillos brand?
(1)Fiyah C.
My inner fat girl always wants to peek out when we ride near this place! Their combo is THE BOMB!!!
(5)Rocksann S.
Portillo's, Portillo's owe how I long for you my sweet Portillo's! My heart yearns for your flavorful Italian beef. Why can't Texas offer more places like you? Your peppers are so fresh and your meat is so abundant, the bread soaks up your overflowing juices and melts in my mouth! When I'm in Chicago this is a must stop place! I'm only giving it 4 starts because I haven't tried anything other than the Italian beef and their beer selection is limited to only Miller! UGH gross.
(4)Terri K.
Great dogs and fries - don't forget the chocolate malts! The chopped Salad is another must have! Very dependable and consistent fast food whether you get the dogs, sandwiches or salads. Although I think they may have recently changed their relish??! I don't recall ever eating the bright green stuff until today.
(5)Jaimicia W.
The food is pretty consistent. Everything made to order, so it takes a little longer than your average fast food joint, but it is ready in a reasonable amount of time, nice and fresh. They were kind of skimpy on the giardiniera this time, considering they charge an extra 50 cents for it, but the beef sandwich was still good. I hadn't realized an overpowering smell of onions when I was there, nor did either of us order anything with onions on it, but upon leaving when I got in the car I noticed a lingering smell of onions on our clothes and even in our hair. This was a first, yet still gross.
(4)B C.
If you come here only purchase one thing, the beef and cheddar croissant. Steer clear of the desserts, specifically the lemon cake, which tastes like a combination of lemon pine-sol and swass.
(4)Susan H.
Their salads are insanely fresh, but many are Hella fattening...even without dressing so despite they are a delish dish, check their nutritional info if watching carbs and sugars. The beef, burger and dogs are seriously tasty. The beef is nice and lean, but flavorful. It is great when you can provide customers with consistent quality...and Portillo's takes that seriously. LOVE that you can grab a cold brew here. A little more expensive, but worth it. Dig the ragtime music and vintage photographs/advertising at this location. Stellar chocolate cake. Crazy parking lot and drive-thru!
(4)jOanne A.
Thank you to the Portillo Family for creating such an amazing fast food joint! As soon as I walked in, I got the vintage feel of what it could've been like to walk into their restaurant back in the day. The brick, uniforms that the staff wears, down to the decor. You can get a Chicago Dog any where but I have to say, Portillo's actually has a pretty good dog! I don't venture outside of my usual, and the dog is my usual... But my husband will sometime order an italian beef and that thing is GOOD. Another favorite of ours is their chocolate cake. OMG, I don't really eat too many sugary things these days but it's so damn good that I cannot help but have a slice or two ;) LOVE PORTILLO'S!
(4)-E -.
Very good food all around. The drive through is always packed. There hasn't been a day that I haven't seen it crowded.
(4)Jeff S.
When I visit Chicago, I always try to have at least one Italian Beef sandwich. This location is conveniently right across the street from one of our stores so I always try to visit when I'm in the area. My standard order is the combo sandwich (Italian sausage and Italian beef with hot peppers), fries, and a Coca-Cola. The place is always packed, but the line moves quickly and I've never had a problem finding a table. If you're up for drive-through, they have two lanes with employees taking orders outside. I highly recommend Portillo's. Get the combo with hot peppers and your taste buds will sing for joy. I hear the burgers are great also - maybe one day I'll give one a try.
(5)Melissa B.
I love Portillo's. I love Drive-Thru's. This Portillo's is only about 5 blocks from my house. Why 3 stars? The service!!! The food is awesome (of course). I'm actually in the process of trying to beat my addiction to the chocolate cake. Just writing this review will probably end in me having an Italian beef for dinner tonight. Every location I have ever been to has the drive-thru service down to a science. Why can't this one master it? They literally have 8 people outside all standing in pairs so out of 8 only 4 actually do any work. It drives me nuts every time I'm there!
(3)Mike Clanc Y.
the best. if you are not from chicago than you must travel for the best. i hear they have one in arizona? i didn't see it but i hear it is the classic clean fresh tastes that i grew up with: -)
(5)Laura L.
I have not one complaint on this location. I always come for the cheeseburgers, and cheese fries , and have never been disappointed! The customer service is good , and always fast service! Loyal customer since 2004.
(5)Adriana P.
The drive thru line Does always look like it's going to take forever which was why I was hesitant to stop by but to my surprise, it was very quick to get my food order. The bacon burgers are great!
(5)Vanessa S.
I got their street dog and it was pretty good. It was definitely better than what I thought it would be. Also, this location only have Miller and Miller Lite for you enjoyment. The chocolate cake was pretty good, too.
(3)Lupe G.
As usual, it is ALWAYS crowded. You should expect this at every single Portillo's you visit! This place however, tends to be pretty quick to serve its customers. I have been to 4 different locations & this one seems to be the most consistent & pleasant. KUDOS to you!
(3)Trista T.
This has only been my second visit ever, and maybe I am just not ordering the right thing. In an attempt to make healthier choices I am what I like to call a Vegan Enthusiast, mostly vegan with splurges. On this particular day I was looking for a yummy veggie option and found a Grilled Veggie Sandwich option and just asked for no cheese. I have had veggie dishes with a lot more flavor, but this one was somewhat bland. I have also previously had the cake milkshakes thing which I find a bit gross. I don't like bits of things in my drink clogging my straw. Bleh. I am sure for meat lovers out there, this is heaven though. It has several options and great deco on the inside. Def has a classic Chicago feel that I appreciate.
(3)Who U.
There is no supervision of the employees taking your order at the drive thru so the teenage girls often delay taking your order so they can stand in a group discussing such important topics as makeup and boys. Then when they finally take your order it is often screwed up. Like tonight around 8:20 or so when I ordered 2 Mediterranean salads (1 for myself and the other for my wife at home) yet when another lady came to take my money my order had shrunk down to 1 salad. ***THIS IS THE LEAST MESSED UP MY ORDER HAS EVER BEEN AS OFTEN IT ENDS UP BEING FOOD I NEVER ORDERED.*** But tonight I can understand how they made the mistake of 1 salad instead of 2 salads because 1 and 2 sound so much alike. OH WAIT...1 and 2 doesn't sound any where close to each other. FOR THE LOVE OF GOD PUT AN ASSISTANT MANAGER OUT SIDE TO KEEP THESE GOOFYS IN CHECK. UNTIL THEY DO I WILL NEVER GO BACK AND I WILL TELL EVERYONE I KNOW TO STAY AWAY FROM THIS CLUSTER F**K!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
(1)Zach Z.
Love love love this place. I am originally from IL so when ever I go back home to visit I make sure I stop at a portillos. This place just rocks the house. I dont think there is a bad thing on the menu. I am a jumbo dog ketchup and mustard. Medium fries with a side of cheese and a coke kind of guy. CHECK THIS PLACE OUT!!!
(5)Lou G.
Food is good but management needs to b trained on how employees should b treated. Some people bite the bullet because they don't know any better. If ur thinking of quitting expect to be treated even more unfair. As one HUMAN to another get it together. U r a prime example of the meaning, one bad apple ruins the bunch. Treat people with respect.
(1)Stephanie R.
Well, being a native Chicagoan - I feel like I can't help but share the love for Portillos. While this isn't my favorite location, its certainly the closest to my parents house, so when I am in town I automatically beeline my way towards there. The boyfriend gets the Italian beef - plain, and eats about 10 sandwiches per visit home. No lie. They are pretty amazing. Being that I am gluten intolerant, I tend to stay away from the sandwiches (go figure) but their hot dogs are spot on and I LOVE their chopped salad, sans pasta. The drive thru at this location is not the best, but worth the wait. Love Portillos!!
(4)Marge P.
Always busy. Food is fresh. Wait times can be extremely long. Check your order before driving away! Italian beef is good, hotdogs and the usual Chicago fare all rate an A. Nothing terribly special.
(3)B L.
Portillo's is good everywhere you go. Only difference is the service. Try to go during not-busy times (i.e., the lunch rush and amazingly enough the dinner rush). I've gone here many times after 7 pm and waited awhile but regardless of wait the food is always, always worth it. Of course try the Italian Beef!!!
(5)Michelle H.
i went to portillos in oak lawn on my way to work at advocate christ i ordered a italian beef dipped with hot peppers and american chesse with a vanilla shake at 153 pm by 500pm i had a head ache chills vomiting and diarrhea they both were coming out at the same time i was dying i vomitted on myself i had to leave work early when i made it to my car i threw up in my Range Rover i lost pay and threw up in my lunch box four times on the way home i called portillos and spoke with Randal the manger who informed me that he would call corp and they would call me back that didnt happen i called myself and they called me back to tell me their was nothing they could do i had no proof that portillos made me sick i had a vomit sample and a stool sample but that was not enough they offered me a gift card NOW WHY WOULD I WANT THAT THEY HAD JUST TRIED TO KILL ME AND THINK IM GOING BACK THIER TO EAT NEVER AGAIN i wanted compensation for my lost wages and time i dont need free food i can pay for my own meal i will tell any one who will listen dont eat their ever so yesterday portillos insurance company called and said they wont do anything i have no proof my samples dont mean anything so i asked how could i prove my case she said if others got sick how am i suppose to know if any one else got sick that how they stay in business they JUST LOST MY BIZZ everyday i will post
(1)Joseph R.
Portillo's has definitely claimed its place among the Pantheon of Chicago institutions...and for good reason. Offering a host of Chicago classics under one kitschy, faux vintage roof, Portillo's isn't creative or exciting, nor is it attempting to be. Instead, Chicago classics are done to absolute perfection, here. If someone asked me what a Chicago style hot dog, Italian beef or Maxwell Street Polish is supposed to taste like. I would immediately send them to Portillo's to find out. Also, the chocolate cake is deliciously decadent bliss. The que of cars extending from the drive thru is a testament to the goodness that awaits. Simple. Consistent. Delicious.
(4)MB J.
I ordered Party Package #3 Best of Both for $83 and some change. Well done, Portillos! The cold food was cold and the food that was supposed to be hot was piping. The garden salad was beautiful and the bread was fresh out of the oven. Everything was packaged very well so that it survived the ride back to the party. Kudos to Jim, the guy who took my order. He was efficient and professional. He was able to answer all of my questions. I would certainly use Portillos again for my next party.
(5)Sarah E.
Everything is so good there. When I drive home from church I have to hit the gas or else I would be in there every Sunday.
(5)Alison B.
All of the other Portillo's locations I've been to have been better than this one. My hot dogs haven't been fresh. Once I ordered a breaded chicken sandwich and it tasted exactly like fish (I'm not sure if they used the same batter in the same place, same oil, or what). I always wait a long time and it never seems worth it at this location. I will go to any other location.
(2)Michael T.
What can I say about Portillo's? It is a chain restaurant which serves very good food. By no means is it cheap. Then again, you get what you pay for. I've paid as much as $30 for a couple of hot dogs, chicken sandwich, and some salad. It's worth it. The Oak Lawn location is ALWAYS crowded. You will typically wait 10 or more minutes if you use the drive thru. If you go inside, you can likely get your food in five to seven minutes. Let's get to the food. I am a huge fan of the chicken pecan salad. It is the best item on the menu. Hot dogs are solid but nothing exceptional. Beef is good but I've had better. The decor is somewhat cheesy but they try hard at giving it an "Ed Debevic's" feel. The biggest problem with Portillo's is the noise factor. It is so freaking loud inside it will give you a headache. They keep the drive thru mic extremely loud so you'll hear every motorist's order as it echoes across the interior. The inside counter people also speak into a booming mic to let the cooks know your order. Is this even necessary? After all, my order is being placed into the computer which shows up on a screen for the cooks to view. Then, because it is so crowded, the eating area is loud. If this isn't quite enough, the overhead speakers play oldies music at a high decibel level as well. I'm surprised that no employees have ever gone postal because of the environment in which they work. I'd rather avoid the ear drum shattering, headache inducing noise and go to Pop's Beef (105th Kedzie), Rosie's (103rd Cicero), Pluto's (105th Cicero), or Frankie's Beef (a little more west on 95th Street from Portillo's). The food is just as good if not better and you won't have to shout.
(3)Lupe D.
Portillos has never let me down...this chain never lets me down their italian beefs, italian sausage, and cheeseburgers are on my regular rotation. their fries are so good it's criminal. they also serve a KILLER chocolate cake and some people swear by the chocolate cake shake (I am eskared to try it) so the difference is the size of the restaurant, cleanliness, how chaotic it is and it's customer service. we arrived smack dab in the middle of lunch on a Friday, if we had judged it on the parking lot alone, we would have left with our tales between our legs...it was madness - you would think the world was ending and this was the last restaurant open! people were speeding to get any open spot! and the drive thru line was looooooong...but it looked like the workers in their bright orange accessories had it under control...but I digress...despite the circus in the parking lot, we went into the restaurant only to find that there was no line and plenty of tables! this restaurant was smaller than the downtown Chicago Portillos/Barnelli's, but it didn't feel cramped. the food was, as usual, really good. I had the italian beef and those heavenly fries, my BF had a cheeseburger and the heavenly fries. we both inhaled our food...There's no hit or miss with Portillo's with me...it's always a hit!
(4)Dan N.
For my 200th Yelp! review, I wanted to a review a place special to me. What can be more appropriate than a transplanted Chicagoan reviewing Portillo's. I've always loved Portillo's, but not having one within 300 miles of my house makes me miss it that much more. The one thing I've learned from my sporadic travels around parts of the country is that NOBODY, and I mean nobody, does Italian Beef like Chicago--and Portillo's may do it better than anybody else. My typical order is a toss-up between a Beef and Cheddar crossiant and an Italian Beef sandwich DIPPED with provolone and hot peppers. Sometimes I'll even order a Chicago-Style dog on the side instead of fries, just to get the full Chicago experience in one meal. Don't waste your time on burgers, chicken sandwiches, or, God-forbid, salads at this place--go with the beef or mayybe a hot dog--you will NOT be disappointed!

This location and the one in Crestwood have awesome customer service. Parking is an issue here. Needs a bigger and well designed parking lot...

The World According to Noelle Allergic Girl's Guide to Life We arrived only to see an extremely long line of cars in the drive through area. Being a California Girl, I was not doing well with the cold. It was 20 degrees with snow on the ground. I pleaded with my better half to just go through the drive through. He said it would be a good experience for me to actually go inside to Portillos. So we made the mad dash from our parking spot through the snow into the warm restaurant. It was packed inside. We both ordered hot dogs and shared onion rings. I just wanted mustard and kraut on my hot dog. The person taking our order let me know they didn't have kraut. When our food arrived- I was surprised that the hot dog was so skinny. I took one bite and fell in love. It had the perfect snap and was extremely flavorful. I loved it so much I decided to get another one. After our lunch we headed to Al Capone's home on 7244 South Prairie Avenue, chicagohs.org/history/ca… . For those history buffs Al Capone's home intersects Emmett Till Ave (aka 71st Street). Noelle's Notes The BEST hot dog ever.

I just moved to Chicago in the last week and already am in love with Portillo's! Lord the Italian beef with sweet peppers is to die for. Their Maxwell style polish is ok and their Italian sausage with hot peppers is pretty good but that Italian beef is unbeatable! You don't really need fries with anything. Just order two sandwiches and a lemonade and you'll be ready for a food coma afterwards. Next time, I'll get a Chicago dog so I can say I've tried everything I need to from Portillo's. I like salads, but I'll make one at home if I want one. When I go out to eat, I want to be satisfied and full when I leave and Portillo's doesn't disappoint on that front. The customer service is pretty good. I haven't had to wait extremely long - I've waited longer at McDonald's lol. Please visit if you haven't yet. If you have, keep going!

To be honest, I was disappointed with this place. I grew up in Chicago but moved to California 35 years ago, so I was craving a Chicago Italian beef sandwich. The meat was dry. The fries tasted like they came out of a freezer bag, and the coffee was blah. To add insult to injury, I was charged 39 cents for hot peppers, all maybe 1/10 of an ounce. I don't see why all the reviewers rave about this place. There used to be a pizza place, Vince's, down the street from my house, and they had the best Italian beef I've ever tasted. I thought they were out of business, so I decided to try Portillo's. Once I returned to my sister-in-laws, I found out they are still in business over on 63rd., west of Midway. I should have looked first. I would not recommend this restaurant.

This place is a one of a kind restaurant that serves all Chicago food. Everything that I've ordered here over the past 10 years has tasted good. The hot dogs, Italian Beef, cheeseburgers, onion rings, fish sandwiches, chicken sandwiches are all very good. Every location I go to is always crowded so be prepared for that but it's worth the wait.

What a great experience, my first visit to the Chicago area and I found this place. Asked the ladies at the cash register to suggest what I should order for my first taste of Chicago food. Hotdog with pickle, hot pepper, tomatoes and relish then added the beef sandwich dipped in broth with peppers, onion rings on the side and a soda. how could I resist the luscious chocolate cake slice... what a full meal and everything was fantastic. lost a point because the manager was told that someone spilled a drink on the floor. he rolled his eyes and took his time to go get three wet floor signs and put them around the spill in stead of just taking care of the problem right then and there he had to go get someone to go mop the floor as if it was a grunts responsibility. I can tell the employees are looked down upon from their superiors. A good restaurant everyone is happily employed and praised for good hard and fast work. Besides the management issues at this place they have fantastic ambiance and fare.

First off, I'd have to say I'm at a loss as to why people have such strong affection for Portillo's. I do like their fries and I think their food is fine as far as fast food goes, but I don't think it's anything more than that. This location was added in the last several years, and the layout is terrible. It's plunked down in an overbuilt area that is waaaaaay too small to contain the traffic it generates, so the queue for the drive through goes around every building on 95th street before you get to the drive up window. I've done distance bike rides that were shorter. ( that maybe a slight exaggeration.) But every Portillo's drive thru location I've been to is S-L-O-W. (which is why they have the raised curbs so you can't back out or turn around when you've decided 15 minutes is too long to wait for a mediocre hot dog.) This location though is the worst. They have two queues that merge into one, which automatically creates a bottleneck.

If you haven't been to Portillo's you need to try the beef.. with peppers of course. If they had it on the beef sandwich showdown on the food channel I think they would have one. This place always has the food ready to go and get the order correct. They need to start having red sauce at the specific location.. you can only get the red sauce on your beef sandwich at the Barnelli's locations. Try the garbage salad, burger , hot dog and the of course the beef.. When I look for comfort food , I go to Portillo's!

I don't smoke. I don't do drugs. I don't drink much anymore (well, at least by most people's standards). I don't gamble. I'm not a shopaholic. I am a junk food junkie. As soon as the stress hits (which is every other day in my line of work), I need a Portillo's fix STAT!!! I usually order the Italian Beef, a hearty serving of meat with the bread soaked in au jus. Yummmm... Sweet peppers on the side, please! Crinkle fries are a perfect compliment to any entree. Today I tried the Halibut Filet Sandwich. Dee-lish! A new addition to a long list of tasty food. I suppose I should start trying the other menu items. Ugh - but that Italian Beef keeps callin' my name... When you're craving some comfort in the form of food - head to Portillo's. It's just what the doctor - er, nurse - ordered.

One day after another? Yeah... First was their delicious onion rings and chili dog which was excellent. Second day: Grilled tuna w/ french fries. Delicious. Their dipped Big Beef is when I have my italian beef cravings and when I'm in the area.

I Love, Love, Love Portillos! Their Italian beefs are beyond amazing. Every time I go home to Chicago I make sure I stop by portillos for the best Italian beef ever!

Holy. Sensory. Overload. I arrived in the Chicago area to visit family on Saturday and was totally famished. The family took me to Portillo's. Despite being from the area and coming back to visit at least once a year this was the first time I had ever stepped foot inside a Portillo's. It was around 3:30 when we arrived and it was just total chaos. I have never seen anything like it. The drive thru was lined up around the building and inside it was packed. It was so packed we had to park in the Home Depot parking lot next door. It baffled me how many people were crammed in here. The menu is fairly extensive and there was so much hoopla going on around me that I ordered the first thing my eyes came across that seemed acceptable. I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich minus the mayo and added BBQ sauce. Once I sat down and had a few moments to look over the menu without pressure I realized I should have ordered something else. Oh well. The sandwich was good. The chicken was tender and grilled just right. The BBQ sauce was spicier than I expected but it was still quite tasty (I definitely prefer sweeter sauces). The fries were probably the best part of the meal. Oh yeah, and kudos to Portillo's for having Diet Coke. HELL YEAH I love me some Diet Coke! Next time I'm in town I may go back and get something else (probably Italian beef). Hopefully it won't be as crazy next time but my family says it always is. At least I will be mentally prepared next time.

Ah, good ole Portillo's - home of the good ol' Chicago Dog! We make it a point to stop by and grab a bite when we're in Chicago... this is usually our first stop after arriving from the airport.

Ohh portilloss I love you!!! Everything's ALLWAYS GOOD

I went to Portillos on recommendation from the many people who talk about how "you haven't had an Italian beef until you've had Portillo's." So, a friend and I tried it on our way out of Chicago last night. The parking lot was packed, and the drive-thru was wrapped around the building. When we finally got a parking spot and walked in, almost the entire dining room was empty. We went up and ordered and moved down to the pickup window. A couple of minutes later we had our food: Italian beefs and Chicago dogs. The Chicago dogs were everything one would expect. The Italian beef on the other hand, is nowhere near the best in Chicago as many have claimed. The most prominent flavor was of black pepper, with very little beef flavor. This seems odd for a sandwich composed entirely of beef, topped in au jus. The location itself is well done, with a fun theme, and quick service. If only the food was better... In short, the theme is really cool, the food comes out really fast, but like Red Robin, Portillo's has more flash than substance.

For years I had to hear my friend Karla gripe all the time about wanting an Italian Beef. So I did what any good California foodie in the Bay Area would - I made it my personal mission to find the right restaurant to satisfy her. We went high to North Beach in San Francisco and low to Philly Cheesesteak spot in Oakland. We tried roast beef sandwiches, hoagies and damn near sloppy joes. Nothing worked. Nothing was right. I gave up, I was just like "fuck her picky ass." Then I actually moved to Chicago. And had an Italian beef. Oh. Ohhh. So now I'm in love with a sandwich and feel like such a jerk I've gotta mission to buy her one every time she's in town. This Portillo's was my first and is still my favorite. I ask for mine dipped with sweet peppers and cheese with giardiniera on the side. I may or may not actually get it this way in the bag, but usually I still eat it however it shows up. Really just meaty sandwich perfection - Sliced beef drenched in fragrant cow juiciness. Good crusty bread. Perfect giardiniera - not too spicy, lots of wonderful celery. I eat every variation, including the Big Beef, a double sized beef - a poor woman's Fogo de Chao. My current fave is their gravy bread - really just one of the best things ever. I only rarely get the combo ( that's a "beef" with an Italian sausage on it, too, for the ignorant, as once I was) because I don't like their sausage that much - I like Al's way more on that and on fries, because Portillo's fries are pretty bland. Since I can now say that I have tried everything that Portillo's has to offer, I can tell you there are also some clear misses - the grilled vegetable sandwich, grilled tuna sandwich aren't worth it. But there are also some other clear winners, like their chocolate cake - crazy dense, fudgy frosting on a double layer super moist spongy cake. Must have some of that beef in there - deelish. They even make a shake where they dump a whole piece of the cake into the shake and blend it up - Only in Chicago! And maybe, like, Texas. Anyway, it's fantastic. So basically: Sorry Karla. Jeez, I just had no idea what you were going through missing Italian Beef. Thankfully, there will be fewer beef ignorant Californians - Portillo's just opened their second location in Cali.

Finally an ordering system more complicated than Starbucks! The french fries are good, drive thru people are friendly, but they don't have veggie burgers. Blah.
(3)Michael C.
oh portillo's. the hot dogs. so good. the chicago dog is delicious. mustard, relish, chopped onions, sliced tomatoes, pickle, peppers all piled high on that signature poppy seed bun. the original done right here. you gotta' eat this one. the chili dog is freakin' great too. their homestyle chili piled high with cheese with fresh onions. its times like this i hate being in new york and want a chicago dog! give me one please! their menu is huge. lots of great stuff but i try not to defer from the hotdogs when i come for a visit. add a side of cheese fries and you're ready to go. oh yes. yes the food is bad for you, and yes you might feel gross after eating it...but who the heck cares? this crap is gooooood.

It's the classic store, what can I say. Not much different than other establishments. The same good food, service is good, at times can be a little slow. The 95th street location seems to always be crowded so I guess that can speak for itself. I must say the parking is a little inconvenience, if its crowded then you may have to park in the Home Depot parking lot.

I ordered a giant lemonade and drank it like a dehydrated fish...and they gave me a refill.....this was after the the gay food attendant told me never to wear my shirt to this establishment again. Nice to see you too. He said it with a straight face...several times...some may take it as rude, i get the humor. i actually give him credit for reaching for a small personal connection, even if it was to insult my Cubs shirt. I had a huge beef with cheese, which while putting me in the washroom for most of the nigyt, was absolutely yums for gums ( i just made that up...feel free to use it!)

Please be careful with your children and family while visiting ANY and ALL Portillos establishments. My 6 year old daughter was strong arm robbed for my BlackBerry phone in the Portillos by a Portillos employee, who she identified. I spoke with two representative from Portillos Ms. Owen and Mr. Stawarz who said he was in charge of risk management. This gentleman had NO concern for the well being of my child and they both said they will not help. They never ask if my child was injured during this horrific and awful experience. Be very afraid to go to Portillos this place is NOT family friendly and they have proven that they do not care about there customers.

Ribs: Fall off the bone tender Beef: Delickass Hotdog: Killer Burger: Awesome Honestly I havent ordered anything off the menu that would not be considered delickass. However the staff: I was in the drive thru, I asked, "Do you take the money?" She said, " If you gave me money it wouldent be for food." What is that supposted to mean? What would I give her money for if it aint for food?

Outstanding... One of Best italian beefs in Chicago... Varied menu fastfood with out tasting that way... Great salads also

Something is not quite right with this particular Portillo's. I've been to many, of course, since I was born in Chicago and everyone gets an Italian beef coupon with your birth certificate. If someone doesn't know what Eye-Tal-ee-on Beef is, they ain't from here. The one downtown near the Rock 'n' Roll Mickey D's is crazy quick, usually. There, the food is mainly hot and delicious. Out in Oak Lawn, it's like after you order someone yanks the lever of a time warp machine and the cookers & wait staff fall back into an era before the Ford Model-T, grills and functioning shake machines. Seriously, I've spent nearly an hour in the drive-thru line as other people fly by with their bags o' grease. How complicated is it to char-grill an Italian sausage. In the interest of time, do I have to feel obligated to buy your refrigerated pre-fab (expensive) salads? Who comes here for freakin' salads, anyway? That's like looking for pig ears at Whole Foods. Wha...? Nothing against Portillo's. And please Dick Portillo don't retalliate against me by sending Jim Belushi to my house. But do fire everyone who works here and start over. This is the dull stonel in an otherwise crowning jewel Chicago chain.

I work right by this location and it is deadly. Sometimes I can't resist. Luckily I really like their salads...unfortunately, their salads are not very healthy. doh. Anyhoo, love portillo's food. The drive-thru is slow and kind of sucks, but every one is like that. And the food is worth it!
(3)Isabel A.
Mr. Dipped Italian Beef....with cheddar cheese fries.......YOU ARE THE LOVE OF MY LIFE (The fries....you are my Sancho!!!)! That is all.
(5)Kay R.
The food is great & they have a great system for when the drive thru gets backed up. I just wish they wouldn't leave those stupid tickets under my windshield wiper.
(5)Thomas Y.
If your looking for Chicago style food you cant beat Portillos. There are alot of great hot dog places in Chicago but my favorite by far is Portillos.Be sure to try there Italian beef as well, You would be hard pressed to find a better place for Italian beef or hotdogs anywhere in the city.
