Good food, but little too pricey. Not a lot of room to sit

These tacos are amazing- I truly don't understand how anyone can review these as just "average". I go here almost once a week and have tried almost every taco on the menu and there has not been one taco I haven't enjoyed. I especially love the Turkey Picadillo, Pato En Mole (duck), Crispy Camarones, and Pork Al Pastor tacos. AND don't forget to look at the taco of the week when you get in, never disappointed with those either. Although they are a bit pricey ($3-4 per taco) the quality of each taco is so worth it. The guac is also delicious. It's a bit pricey but you get A LOT with a single order and they are accompanied with warm, salty tortilla chips. Can be split between 3-4 people. So worth the price. Don't pass this place up if you're in the area!

Awesome little taco joint in Northfield serving food I don't expect in the northshore. I went for the first time for lunch this week... highlights - nice selection of tacos - Old El Paso is straight up old school American taco realness... and it's soooo good, in an embarrassing way. - Duck mole taco was awesome, this chef knows how to make a mole - I can't remember the last one, but damn it was good (the best of them actually) - I think it was pork - super yummy tortillas - Good guac. Chips are so/so - definitely not a highlight. We took our tacos outside to the little picnic tables near the Happ Inn, which was perfect.

Food was average but overall experience was AWFUL. My Taco Nano nightmare started with me placing a large take out order of tacos and dessert. By the time we finished our tacos we noticed there was something missing. "Where is the $5 Tres Leches Cake that we ordered and paid for?" By the time we noticed this mishap it was already too late as they had already closed. I decided to place a call with them the next day. Due to their system not allowing them to refund sales from the prior day they were only able to issue me a credit for the Tres Leches cake. This meant I would have to make a 2nd visit their due to a mistake THEY made. At this point, I didn't want to think too much into it so decided to make the most of it by placing another order a week later so I can finally get to try the $5 Tres Leches Cake I ordered, paid for, and never received. My second visit there, we decided to order the same amount of tacos and the Tres leches cake. They were able to find my "credit" they had recorded in a pouch where they kept (from what I saw) over 20 other "credits" due to other customers. As I went home, we unpacked our order and then noticed we were missing a Fish Taco. At this point, I made sure I counted everything more than once (a total of 5 times) as there was NO WAY they would make the SAME MISTAKE TWICE! But by this time, I was already too far within my Taco Nano nightmare. Trying not to make a big deal of the situation, I kindly gave them a call and explained what I just determined. Person who answered the phone was able to locate my taco order and insisted that all the tacos are in there as she packed the order herself. HAHAHA "I counted it 3 times and unless I'm bad at counting, there is no Fish Taco in my bag" She tries to issue me another credit, but I quickly stopped her as there was no way I was going to make ANOTHER trip down there. Based on my knowledge of their system from the FIRST time they screwed me over, I quickly told her to just refund the amount to my card. She agrees to do so as she hangs up the phone. NEVER AGAIN!!! "Fool me once, shame on....."

Upon entering, there wasn't any greeting, much less even a smile. The guy at the counter was distracted by the game that he didn't want to be bothered. When I reached the counter, he didn't even ask me what I'll have. I had to take an approach and asked if I can have a vegetarian taco and replace mushroom...which was declined...no replacement...so I settled for ordering a vegetarian taco without mushrooms. When it was made, it was made without mushrooms...but also without potatoes, the main ingredient?? What I got was peppers strips with cheese crumbles. He didn't even take note of that, so action to correct it was out of question. At this point, I was already disappointed and didn't bother to ask it be made again. It was very bland. There weren't any sauce bottles on the table. I reluctantly approached him for sauce, which I only received because I asked. As cute as the decor is, I didn't feel welcome, my order was made incorrectly and I won't be back. There are plenty of other places to eat within walking distance...Happ Inn, Tapas Gitanas...I'd rather take my money and my mouth to a place with a friendly face. I highly suggest hiring one.

Supremely superior taqueria. With the same chef as the adjacent Happ Inn, I knew I was probably going to love it even before I stepped in. It's a small place, with just a few small tables and a long communal one, so it's more suited for carry-out. Tacos are made to order, using fresh, organic ingredients. There's quite an array of tasty options from which to choose: duck, beer-battered or blackened tilapia, crispy shrimp, skirt steak, al pastor, chicken--there's even a ground turkey version. Vegetarians aren't forgotten about either; there's a taco with crispy potatoes, poblano rajas, and portabella mushroom. We tried four different ones and they were all fantastic. The al pastor had big chunks of charred, juicy pineapple that I could smell even before unwrapping it. The skirt steak had an added bonus of sliced creamy avocado. So, so good. I also got an order of guacamole, which was available in three levels of heat (genius idea). The medium level of spice was perfect. The texture was sublime; no pureed baby food here. Large chunks of avocado, with just enough tomato, onion, jalapeno and cilantro for balance. The accompanying chips were salted just enough and appropriately sturdy to hold up to the guac. Good selection of sides and desserts (fried plantains, rice and beans, tres leches cake, and flan), and there's even margaritas! Another detail of note: all the tacos are labeled, so there's no pesky unwrapping of everything trying to figure out what's what. That alone makes me a fan. Good job, Taco Nano!

Immediate reaction after eating: this place is legit! it is really good the price can be a little bit high but given the area it's reasonable. Super fresh ingredients, friendly staff and a great spot for a quick bite or a meal. I definitely recommend the shrimp, the fish and the steak tacos. Pleasantly surprised by the flavors.

Stopped by tonight after having spent 7 hours trying to get home from Boston. That doesn't really have anything to do with tacos, but you should know that I had been up since 4am Chicago time. Accordingly, I am very tired, so I'm going to just make a list top to bottom instead of being clever. Guacamole (spicy) - Excellent, and I'm very very picky - chunky, with serranos, but not all that hot, really. Chips were warm. Loved it. Plantains - excellent value for $3, warm, sweet, delicious, yumminess topped with cotija cheese. I would stop by just for these Tacos al pastor - husband and I both got them - pork was NOT fatty and ooky, pineapple is a great add, as others have mentioned the tortillas are homemade - nice and pliable and corny Beer Battered Fish tacos - Ok, not as good as Del Seoul's, but very very good - fish was not oily, nice and light, sweet cabbage topping. I'd definitely order again. Beef "Old El Paso" - so, I can't really take points off of this taco - it's what it's advertised as - it's basically taco bell or what you can make at home with Old El Paso taco seasoning and flour tortillas, only they do it from scratch. If you want to come here and bring a child or picky eater who doesn't like authentic tacos, this is what they should order. I won't ever order it again, but again, it is what it says it is, and actually impressive they managed to reproduce it! Steak Carne Asada taco - sorry, only one that wasn't a stand out - meat was a little chewy, lacked some flavor - just kinda ok. Not bad, but won't do it again. We'll be back - our plan is to order the guac and plantains and only two tacos each this time - I want to try the duck, the chicken and the shrimp.

Nano is a Spanish term meaning taking something as basic as a taco and bringing it to a new level. And that's exactly what they do. The layers of flavor they pack into a corn tortilla are amazing.

I'd been off tacos for a very, very long time until recently. I used to like a crispy shell stuffed with refried beans and a sprinkle of shredded cheddar - you know, like mom used to make. Fast forward to adulthood: it came to my attention that Old El Paso shell + canned beans + cheddar =/= taco. So I began to dip a toe into the world of actual tacos and focused on the fish taco, as I do not eat most of the other common taco fillings. And why would I, when fish tacos are sooo good? And Taco Nano's Sea of Cortez might be the best. It is, like most fish tacos, tilapia, and you can have it blackened (do it) or beer battered. It also comes with a raw cabbage slaw (as opposed to pickled), chile mayo, and a little pico de gallo. The tortilla to taco ratio is 1:1, which is fine because they are filled just right (as opposed to overstuffed, which require a 2:1 ratio). Squeeze a little lime on that and try not to pass out from the deliciosity. And get two. The guacamole is a'ight, but the medium offered no discernible heat. It is also quite chunky, and your chips may wuss out. Note to those who plan to dine-in: this place is small and somewhat communal. It hasn't been a problem for us yet, but it makes me a little antsy to walk in and see a full crowd and a line. We've been on Saturdays, so I imagine weekday lunch is semi-madness. But delicious semi-madness.

Superior tacos. Absolutely the best...well, the best that I have had anywhere, across city and suburbs. And I eat a lot of tacos. I am extremely impressed with these beauties. My favorite is the crispy shrimp--marvelous; steak, duck, chicken, vegetarian, and blackened tilapia are also excellent. My only disappointment has been the al pastor. But with so many other options, that is no problem at all. Besides the regular menu, there are also weekly specials, such as salmon, ropa vieja, and vegetables. Some are traditional and simple; others are more innovative. They use really good corn tortillas (single-ply). Check out Taco Nano to taste what quality ingredients and skilled preparation can do to your mouth. I have two minor complaints: first, the small space makes this a less than ideal spot for weekday lunch. Second, they charge $2.50 for a can of soda. Come on, really? For two-fifty, you should install a fountain machine so that I can drink as much as I want. If you prefer to sell just cans, cut your price down to $1.00 or even $1.50. I don't mind paying three or four dollars for each glorious taco, but a plain old can of Diet Coke does not warrant such an outrageous markup. From now on, I will drink just water and instead eat more tacos. EDIT 11/13/14: Susan from Taco Nano left a comment (see below) to clarify that soda cans are $1.25 and soda bottles are $2.50. The menu board states simply "Soda...12 oz...$2.50" so perhaps they could update the board to reflect the two different prices and products. But I'm quite relieved to know that the cans are reasonably priced.

Nothing special other than over priced tacos. 4 bucks for a steak taco that is tiny?!? I've tried it and won't be back.

Looks like the the bad reviews are recent, not sure what happened but an okay place is now sub-par. Pineapple on pork al pastor? Coleslaw on fish tacos? It's like they took Happ in leftovers and made tacos. Also they stuffed $28 worth of food into a lunch bag. How hard is it to give 2 bags? Pros: Good guacamole, only taco place for miles around. Cons: Bad tacos. Weird, inauthentic combos on tough tortillas, salsas are just not good, and counter service is unfriendly. Cramped interior. Oh, and overpriced! Bottom line: Yes it's cute and local, but not a good taqueria. Not going back, will just make tacos at home or drive to Highwood.

This place is great. They have very high-end tacos for a low price. The service is very good. More importantly they serve beer and margaritas. It is kid friendly, casual atmosphere. They have guacamole which is made to order, either spicy medium or mild. Also don't miss their fried Plaintain appetizer. If you have the chance, place your order by telephone ahead of time.

I've tried all Mexican food around here and not one can compare! I ordered the guacamole & chips and tastes perfect made to order. Chips were perfect! I also got pork taco & steak taco. Taste on fleek! Will be coming back often

I give this place a 3.5 stars. The wait to go is long which was supposed to be shorter than eating in the restaurant but it was still the same. The food is ridiculously pricey...$7 for guacamole is way too much for the little they give you. I got a horchata too that was small and watered down for $3. I got guac and chips, 3 different tacos that range for 3-4 dollars each and horchata costing me $24!! That's WAY too much I got the Pastor with pineapple and fried jalapeños that was great the pork meat was a little on the fatty side though. The crispy shrimp taco with creamy salsa was probably my favorite taco but could use more shrimp in it. I also got the duck confit with mole and sesame seeds which I did not like at all. Everyone kept ordering the blacked tilapia one but I don't like fish so didn't try that. The restaurant is really small but is always packed so that's good for them especially in Northfield. They have a cute ambiance like you would find in the city and a good location with plenty of parking. I took off stars because of the wait and the prices being ridiculous high. Good Mexican food with a twist is hard to find in this area though so I added 1/2 a star.

This was a nice taco stop as they have fresh ingredients and creative flavorings for their tacos. We tried skirt steak, fish, duck, pork, and turkey tacos. All were really tasty with the fish lagging a bit behind the others, and the skirt steak was on slightly tough side. The tacos are on pricier side at $3-$4 each, but ingredients are tops. The space is small, so try to beat the lunch rush (as we did at 11:30am) to get a seat. The clientele is upscale in this part of Northfield also, and the area (unfamiliar to me) had a nice feel to it.

Taco Nano is so-so. I think the atmosphere takes away from the food. That said the shrimp tacos are good and the plantains were really good. Nothing else really stood out except for the tiny location itself. If you go, go early or late, basically avoid any time other people might be there because the restaurant is tiny and can get real crowded and real loud real fast. I'll definitely go back, but not with any urgency.

I have gotten tacos to go from here and they have been good. Today, I tried having them at the restaurant which is tiny but quant. It was night and day, I guess the tacos don't travel as well and you don't get the full effect of there goodness. So if you have the time, enjoy the adobo skirt steak and the grilled fish tacos!

Tacos are good. Margaritas could be better and are pretty over priced for the quality. If you're craving tacos and in the area I would still definitely recommend.

After hearing such great reviews, my friends and I finally tried Taco Nano last weekend. Here's what you need to know: The food is awesome. I will forever be dreaming of the shrimp tacos. My only regret is not ordering 3 of them (although the duck and pork tacos were also very good). The guacamole is phenomenal. Order it - you won't regret it. The chips could have been better. The place is tiny! Expect to wait if you plan on eating in. There's also no waitstaff. You'll order at the counter and once you're able to sit, they'll put your order in. We weren't in a rush but if you're looking for a quick meal, I'd suggest carrying out. Overall: Definitely worth a try if you live in the north suburbs. You won't be disappointed.

This is such a cute and delicious place that is SO well priced! I had the horchata which tasted just like the kind I had in Spain (AMAZING), the beer battered tilapia taco and the vegetable taco. The guacamole was so fresh and tasty (with just the right amount for two people), and the beer battered tilapia was the biggest hit. I love the cute space as well as the outdoor seating, and it is also great to take to go.

Every so often you stumble upon a completely unexpected good experience in the most unlikely place and Taco Nano is one of those experience. Hidden among a string of small shops in Northfield, this cozy (small) place is serving up some of the best damn tacos and guacamole in the Chicago area. Yes the tacos are on the small side (get 3 if you're super hungry) and yes this place can be a bit pricey, but this is HIGH quality, authentic, made-to-order Mexican food. If you want a bag full of "Mexican" for $4, go to Taco Hell. Taco Nano always has a taco of the week that's new and different so I usually give that a try along with steak taco. The guacamole (comes in three flavors of heat) is top notch and addictive (I'm talking lick the container clean good). And YES it is a bit pricey for how much you get, but this place is a quality over quantity place and that's not easy to find these days. I dare you to visit and not want to go back the next day.

I have been a customer of this business for some time now, I had always recommended it, however, this is what happened the last time I stopped by: I called to order 4 tacos for pick up (they told me it will be ready in 15 min), I arrived and had to wait another 15 min to get them. I checked the labels on the tacos while driving away -- to find that was not my order. So I turned around and went back, where after another 5-10 min wait, I got the new bag, checked the labels and left. But at home I discovered that: 1. one of them had a HAIR in it; 2. they were in the wrong type of tortilla; 3. the meat of the Pork al Pastor was mostly skin/fat. I would have gone back for a 2nd time if the whole experience wasn't so dreadful. Overall: Long wait and inattentive staff.

Good high quality tacos. My favorite is the al pastor. Pretty small place with a couple dedicated tables and a big shared table. My knocks on the place are pricey for such small tacos and they have difficulty with service during the weekend lunch rush. Yesterday, I ordered guacamole which is pricey at almost $7 and it didn't get served until after we were partially done with our tacos. We had to wait over ten minutes to even receive the tacos. They were obviously confused about what guac orders were done vs. needed to be done and were snappy and rude instead of ever apologizing.

The word is out on this little gem of a taco joint. These are the most authentic, delicious tacos I've had in the states. My favorite is the duck taco- Pato en Mole Negro and the Fish Taco- Sea of Cortez blackened. They make the corn tortillas by hand and they are thick and delicious. The home-made red and green salsa are vital to the experience! It's a small space so you might have to share a bench or wait for a table but it's worth it. Also try the plantains and the guacamole. Best I've ever had.

This is a really great little (and I do mean little) Taco place. We love it and come often to pick-up dinner of Friday night after all the kid's activities are done. Its one of the few places that everyone in the family loves. Guacamole is fresh and delicious. In fact everything here is fresh from the guac to the tortillas to the pineapple (more on that later). This is definitely not your run of the mill taco place. You can get all of the standbys here - Tacos al Pastor, skirt steak, Old el paso (ground beef) for you gringos. I'm a big fan of the Crispy Shrimp with watercress and Serrano cream. My wife goes for the tilapia or vegetarian and the kids are all about the skirt steak. Also worth mentioning is the yummy al Pastor, spicy pork topped with a refreshing slice of pineapple. I usually get two shrimp and one al pastor. Two tacos for the kids, three for me. The place itself is cheerful but small - I bet there are not more then 15 seats in the whole place. Usually this is fine but it can get crazy on Friday night, so I recommend take out.

I don't like writing reviews of a restaurant when I've only been once unless it's an expensive experience, but I really loved Taco Nano and will def come back next time I am craving some Mexican food.. I had a chicken taco and a quesadilla and both were really tasty - it's exactly what I wanted and felt very satisfied. It's a good sized menu, so there are a few things I would love to try next time like the steak tacos and the crispy camarones. The best part are the prices which makes going to Taco Nano very affordable...! Aside from the food, I absolutely fell in love with how this place is decorated. Every table has a small cactus or some kind of flower in the middle and the entire restaurant is filled with bright colors. Usually, I find that kind of design tacky and painful to the eye, but it works very well here. With the combination of all the colors, pictures on the walls, and table settings, it gives off a very authentic Mexican feel to it - I barely ever go to a place and leave feeling like I just stepped into a different country. Not everyone may like that, but I love experiencing different cultures. If you are in the area, I highly recommend to check this place out!

Great tacos made to order. Tasty and full of unique flavor. Each is a la carte. Fun to eat in the restaurant and the preparation is better than with to-go. However, very small seating area. Hard to find a place to sit and eat especially when you are with more than party of two. Don't let that stop you from eating here though.

Small little taco joint in northfield. Simple menu $3 tacos, abd everything else is under 8. I took it to go and my favs were al pastor, the sea of Cortez (fish) taco and plantains. The vegetarian taco wasn't great! Overall pretty tasty just wish there was more options.

Expensive. Ok, but not cheap. There are better value options out there for this kind of food. Keep on looking!

We love to come here with our family! I only wish the place wasn't so small. The tacos are super fresh and tasty. I love both the chicken taco and the sea of Cortez. This is a great place to go with our kids because we can have a drink and everyone eats a good meal at a reasonable price! A really great suburban gem that I wish I had more seating!

Excellent food. All tacos. Great guacamole. Small number of tables. Was crowded with lots of locals, indicating the the quality of food and quick service.

Stopped in to order a quick lunch bite to go after reading a review in a local paper. Since I rarely believe anything I read in these local rags that are trying to land future ad placements by never saying anything negative about ANY place they review I was prepared for mediocre food a drab decor. Instead what I found was a pleasantly bright and lively, albeit tiny, seating area and a very legible menu hand written on a blackboard. The decor is colorful without being offensive and I look forward to squeezing in here for a quick dinner in the future. Compared to the other new Mexican place nearby in Glenview (El Mexican - see my review) this place is comfortable, inviting and homey. It has a way WORSE location than El Mexican as it is tucked into a small strip of retail stores one block south of Willow Road just east of Happ with no real "drive-by" traffic. Even with that they were quite busy at lunch time. We ordered a Pork Al Pastor and a Adobo Skirt Steak. Both were fantastic. The pork was tender with a good hit of chile de arbol in the marinade and a very noticeable pineapple taste as it should have. Some folks might find it too sweet - we thought it was perfectly seasoned - no salt needed. The fried fresh jalapenos added a nice flavor without being too hot. The skirt steak had great flavor with a red adobo marinade - maybe chili de arbol again but it tasted very different from the pastor. It had a nice addition of a slice of avocado. Both tacos were seasoned with cilantro and onions and were served on tender and flavorful corn tortillas. We look forward to returning to try the guacamole, duck mole, vegetarian and sea of Cortz tacos. My bet is that this place will survive via word of mouth and their very good branding.

Awesome sauce...great food!! I would go with anything on the menu! Fish..Pork..Beef all perfect!! Also the spicy guacamole!

Tacos here are very good! Might be a little on the pricey side as I always want to order at least 10 tacos just for myself (not kidding) and $7 for guacamole and chips is a bit much. But...the food IS delicious and service, when dining in, has been decent.

Occasionally I sign up for a late afternoon/early evening torture (I mean class) @ Shred415* and then often stop across the street at Taco Nano to get back all those calories I just burned. I've only picked up food from Taco Nano, but look forward to dining in this small casual restaurant at some point. In the meantime, it's proven to be a quick and easy dinner to take home to my taco lovin' husband. I typically stick w/ the vegetarian tacos for myself. My husband has tried many tacos on the menu, but announces the Old El Paso as his favorite after every meal. Two tacos tends to be plenty for me, while my husband can typically finish 3. Well worth the torture at Shred to be able to enjoy this tastiness! * yelp.com/biz/shred415-no…

After tying quite a few on for a Tuesday night in Highwood, my body told me it needed substance.....tacos? Oh yeah let's do this!!!! It's amazing the amount of Mexican places that have sprouted up in Northbrook/Glenview/Northfield as of recent. If you start on Willow and Shermer in Northbrook and drive East on Willow, you can run into 3 newer Mexican joints....La Taquiza, which wins my heart with the ladies who work there as well as my stomach with that bomba flavor they have. El Mexican, which has fantastically fresh food and empanadas that have some serious flavor to them. Then there is tiny little Taco Nano in Northfield. I thought by jetting in at 5:30 and ordering to go that I would have beaten the crowd, but it was pretty packed when I walked in. They have one large table that could potentially seat up to 10 people, and two booths which can seat about 4 people a piece. So an 18 person capacity...I would consider ordering take out in a heartbeat unless you're there at an off time. I wish Taco Nano meant that my food would take a nanosecond to order and receive.....not the case here though. This is my biggest issue with this place. Besides guacamole & rice/beans, they ONLY serve tacos. Now, they are gourmet/homemade tacos, and they are pretty tasty. Each one has a different protein and completely different toppings on each. So, this isn't your Taco Bell where they are using the same ingredients just in a different way. There is much creativity to these tacos, but they HAVE to find a way to expedite food faster. I bought 5 tacos total and brought them home for the wife and I to sample. I spent about $18 and some change, but when I lifted the take out bag I was shocked that it wasn't very heavy. As Jay K points out, these tacos are tiny, and for $3-4 a piece, you can throw value completely out the window here. I could have housed all five of these within 15 minutes if I hadn't spent so much that I felt I needed to savor every bite. So lets get to the point and talk about what was actually good. Pork al pastor was by far MY favorite taco. It had some sweetness of pineapple to go along with that crispy My wife's favorite was the duck confit with the black mole sauce. Super sweet and spicy mole flavors, and this was the only taco that was larger in size compared to the rest. Also had the pollo gringo, which had too many pablano and other peppers in it that kind of took away from the pollo. Also had the sea of Cortez w/ blackened tillapia but this taco wasn't really hot enough by the time I got home with it. It was good, just forgettable. Lastly, I got the battered shrimp taco, which I finished in 3 bites but could have eaten it in one no problem. Yes, I am a pig :) To sum it up, my suggestion would be to come here if you're willing to drop some serious money for bite size tacos. The food is very good, and I'm sure the theory is that people will continue to pay these kind of prices in this area. But, personally I will stick to La Taquiza and El Mexican, both closer to my home.

Love this place! I have been a dozen times and often bring people. Everyone loves it! My favorite tacos are the blackened tilapia and the shrimp. Love the fried plantains, guacamole and homemade margaritas. Every thing is great!

LOVE LOVE LOVE this place! Myself and a group of coworkers go every other week to get our fix. Sea of cortez beer battered fish taco is SO good- I haven't had a fish taco from anywhere else that tops this taco from Taco Nano's. The fried plantains and guacamole are both EXCELLENT as well. (Guac is a little overpriced in my opinion, but nonetheless it's delicious). The location itself is really small (adorably decorated) so I wouldn't recommend going with a really large group. Have never left unsatisfied.

  • Taylor M.

The food is really good (I love the shrimp tacos). Unfortunately they are overpriced for the portions and the wait time is usually ridiculous. I had to wait over 25 minutes for 4 tacos. 5 stars for quality Mexican food, 2 stars for service and price.

This restaurant was a really nice find. I had passed it a few times and finally got a chance to try it. It's a small store front, but very relaxed, comfortable, and bright. The decor is what I would call traditional Mexicano??? It was late, so I ordered at the counter. I also ordered to go. Ok, here is the take on the food. The guacamole was EXCEPTIONAL. Really great. Fresh. Wonderful. Is worth a second trip. The steak tacos were pretty good too. I bought 2 and hey were filling. A third would have been great. The quesadillas were pretty good too. Over all, a pretty decent meal. I really felt that the quality of the food was great. I don't know if it was all organic, locally bought, ect,.... But did get the feeling that the food was more authentic then your average restaurant. The cost of the meal was on the high side, but I did feel fine about the cost after I finished. It was worth it. Did I mention that the guacamole was FANTASTIC!!!!

These tacos are amazing. Our company is always ordering lunch from here and it's always delicious. Super consist and best shrimp tacos I have ever had. I've had almost everything on their menu and nothing disappoints. Staff is also always friendly.

What an amazing find in Northfield! Amazing taco I had the shrimp and fish tacos which were crazy good. They make all of their corn tortillas and Freddy was extremely nice and even gave us a tour of the kitchen. Definitely need to try the al pastor taco and the guac looks awesome. Will be back soon.

Another great dinner! I have a gluten allergy and it's so nice to go somewhere and not get sick! The guacamole is outstanding! We met the owner last night and he made me gluten free baked plantains! They are on the menu as fried plantains, but he told us to just to ask for them baked and gluten free in the future! The habanero hot sauce was so good too. We had one of each taco pretty much and everything was outstanding! Oh and the margaritas were sooooo good!!! This is our new favorite spot!

I've been here about five times. The food has always been great. The only reason I'm not giving it five starts is because sometimes it takes a while to get your food and there is limited seating.

  • Shaun S.

My wife and I have been here twice now, both times we had great experiences. I'm a pretty stout guy and two tacos and sharing the guac with my wife was enough. On our second visit, I went with three and it was too much. Not every portion or serving has to be super-sized like McDonalds or Maggiano's. Our service was nice and prompt, food came out in a time that is reflective of the type of restaurant it is... not fast food. You order at the counter and then it's delivered to you. Yes, it's a smaller place, but it's also part of the charm and it's probably only 10-15% more than say Chipotle. If you're cheap... then run to the border and hope they get your order right. If you're looking for something outside the "normal" taco and are in the area, I'd swing through.

I love this place! The most delicious and freshest tacos in town. We pickup from there quite often as it is very small and there is not a lot of dining space for my family of 5. I adore the fish tacos and the chicken tacos. I also love trying the weekly specials. The quesadillas are great too. Best of all - grab a margarita while you wait for your order. They're fantastic!

Great quality taco! It's a limited menu but they have a special every day and the quality of the food is way above standard. Enough seating for 15 to 20 people and the decor is very nice. The servers were very nice too and they even gave great recommendations. They also have a great homemade salsa. Unfortunately, we were on a working lunch so we couldn't try the margaritas.

  • Jen P.

The fish tacos ("Sea of Cortez") are amazing! I have been here twice since hearing about it this month and the quality of their food is always on point. The tortillas are hand made in the back of the restaurant all day long and always fresh. I have also tried the pato con mole tacos but I did not think that they were as great. This was mainly because I felt the mole was not as savory as others I have tried. The location is very small inside and seating may be tough around lunchtime. There is also a patio across the street that I believe belongs to the restaurant. Overall, this place is well worth it if you are in the area!

I went here for lunch. I had the Old el Paso taco. It was very juicy and full of flavor. All the toppings were fresh. The rice and beans were also good. The beans were topped with fresh salsa, great. It's very clean inside. It's a smaller dining area. The people were nice. It's too bad they don't have any meal deals. It was a little pricey. About $12 without a drink. I would probably return again if I was in the area.

Got the duck taco and the steak taco. Steak taco was good, but needs salsa. Duck taco was the best taco I"ve ever eaten. The mole sauce is the pefect complement. Must try.

Another one of my coveted hole in the wall places which produces simple but authentically good food. You can see the entire food prep area from the ordering counter and can tell that all the food is freshly made on site. The meats and shrimps were very fresh and the guacamole and salsa were expertly done. Add some freshly made margaritas and it's the next best thing to being there.

Ummm... Freddy Sanchez can cook for me any time! Came here for lunch with my sister and other family. SMALL joint with one communal table and then a few small tables. My sister knows what I like. Since I was running late to meet, she took the liberty of ordering and did phenomenally. The guacamole here is excellent. Fresh, made to order, with HOT and just salted chips. Can order the guacamole anywhere from, in terms of spice level, mild to hot. Ordered was the mild because some in our party can't handle heat. Tacos ordered for me was the Duck in Mole (Pato en Mole Negro) and the Pork al Pastor. The taco tortilla (shell/ holder, what ever you like to call it), is fresh pressed and griddled masa, so this is a soft taco and akin to having something like a really good tamale. The fresh masa is a nice touch. The Pato: Nice and earthy mole sauce that plays well with the rich duck meat. Just a few drops of the red table sauce (these sauces aren't all that hot and compliment the food very nicely) sprinkled with sesame seeds and pickled onion. I ended up having a second one after polishing off this one and the Al Pastor. it's a favorite. Al Pastor: Spit roasted and layered pork with onions, spices and pineapple. The way it SHOULD BE! You can see the spit in the back. Bright tang from the citrusy marinade and nuance of spice, cutting the richness of the pork. Bits of orange and pineapple in the very tasty salsa and crispy fried jalapenos for a nice kick of heat. As said before, had a second Pato as well as the Crispy Camerones: Beer battered shrimp, serrano cream sauce and radishes. Another winner. Did have a bite of my sisters Baja Fish Taco and wasn't "wowwwwed" but I also can't stand tilapia. Least favorite fish next to Asian Carp (which is not only nasty and inedible...) I digress. It's too bad this place is so small. Come in at the wrong time and you could get stuck without a seat, but the food here is excellent and comes out fast. Is it cheap? No and I think it speaks more so to the quality of ingredients. And no, these aren't MONSTER tacos either. The tacos are aout the same size as Big Star... Similar price as well. Many say; this COULD be the Big Star of the North Shore and others say "wha... What a rip off..." And those reviewers heap praise on Big Star? I'm confused. In going through some more of the reviews here; tacos don't get loaded with rice and beans, only a Mission Style (SF Mission District) burrito does. And a menu is just that, it's a MENU and not a parts list for you to "mix and match". And it's counter-service taquera... Sorry that you are so put out to get your own frickin' water.

TACO PARADISE. When I first walked into this little restaurant I really felt like I'd walked into my dream of what a taco place should be... I was struck by how beautiful the space is...welcoming...harmonious...really great vibe...friendly and attentive staff...very fast food for a place that actually cooks!...and I truly have to say the food was WONDERFUL. Most people can't tell the difference between a taco that's A+ QUALITY, or B, or C, or D, or F. Most people have only ever known such poor quality they believe that's the standard of excellence. I regard that as a food tragedy. So it was my very good fortune to discover this little gem of a taco place. I have to laugh hearing people complain about the price of these DANGEROUSLY DELICIOUS tacos. I had a DUCK TACO and I can't remember if it was 3 or 4 bucks, because I was just so damn delighted to eat something this fantastic, and for me it doesn't matter what the price is when the QUALITY is so freakin' great! What's 4 dollars for a taco that tastes like 40 dollars!!!! I've been to sooo many disgusting dives in my life, suffered so many times trying to choke down the most nasty so-called "AUTHENTIC" Mexican with friends after going to the bars in my twenties...where flies were buzzing around the register landing on the tacos...garbage all over the place...where everything was as nasty as can be...most of all the food. I want to contrast how fabulous the food is at NANO by sharing a story... The other night I made the mistake of stopping at an all-night taco place. I ordered just one chicken taco without any toppings because I wanted to taste if the chicken was good. What they served me tasted nothing like chicken! It was hard, dry, no flavor of chicken whatsoever, and all I could taste was salt, grease, totally vile. Sadly, that's what many people call "REAL" Mexican, and it makes me cringe. Lots of folks equate quality with quantity. The food can be truly rotten, yet if the portions are huge and cheap there will be thousands of people raving that it's the most amazing thing they've ever eaten lol. I came up with a name for that, "Gene & Jude Syndrome" after the worst hot dog I've ever had in forty years. Literally dozens of people told me Gene & Jude's was the Holy Grail of hot dogs and fries...and it was terrible. I took a bite of their totally flavorless tube of hard nastiness and threw it in the garbage. I would never serve anything so bad to my enemies. People believe that cheap equals great. It's a horrible myth and a very pervasive one. There are people who will inevitably complain TACO NANO costs a little bit more than a thousand terrible taco dives in Chicago. Yeah, it costs more than Taco Bell lol, and the QUALITY is a hundred times BETTER!! It's very refreshing to see their simple menu that's easy to read and doesn't have a hundred things on it, because it means BETTER QUALITY....LESS IS MORE! They're not trying to do a hundred items poorly. By keeping the menu small and stream-lined they can focus on serving up fabulous FRESH food! The most delicious tacos I've had in my life were at TACO NANO.

I had a pork al pastor taco and my wife had a fish taco. The very small corn tortilla over powered the small amount pork and fish, plus for $3 I just expected more. I would need at least three tacos to get me to the almost 'full' mark and I just can't see paying that much without table service. Very poor value and waiting 15 minutes for two tacos is way to long.

Always loved taco nano until the last visit. Up all night sick with food poisoning that continued thru the next day. I had the beef taco. I know I got sick from there because I had a peanut butter sandwich for lunch at home. Been there many times and also noticed different service when the owner is not there.I wonder if there is different care in food preparation when the owner is absent also.

Cozy little place, flavorful tacos, and great horchatas..what more could you ask for? I was intrigued by the line I'd always see during lunch hours, so I decided to pop in around 6:30. Ordered my food at the counter (al pastor and taco of the week) and although I was about to take it go, I was told it would probably take about 20 minutes, so I sat at a table and wrote student evaluations (oh joy) while I waited. There were a few families there and a table of junior high schoolers happily enjoying their food. When mine arrived, I was not disappointed. The taco of the week had grilled pineapple and fried jalepenos..yum, and the al pastor was delicious as well. It was a nice portion..if you're a big eater, I would order at least 4-5 tacos, but for me, the two was just fine. Definitely will be stopping by again

I can't believe it took me so long to find this place. Taco Nano is only 5 minutes (or so) from my house, and I'm always complaining about the lack of good restaurants in my area and yet this delicious little taco shop is nearly sitting in my backyard! What's not to love? It has fun, colorful decor, the staff is friendly, the prices are reasonable, and the food is yummy. I tried the guacamole and the pork al pastor and beer battered tilapia tacos. The guac was pretty good - not the best I've tried but reasonably good - but the tacos sold the place to me. I especially liked the tilapia, which had a really interesting spicy flavor. The pork was very tex-mex. Highly recommended if you live in the area.

  • Paula S.

I would literally set up a bed in the back and live here if I could, surviving only on a diet of tilapia and shrimp tacos. And it would be the best life of all time. But seriously. I've driven out to Northfield from Chicago more times than I can count because I can't stop dreaming of these tacos. Everything I've had here -- and I've tried a lot -- is 100% fantastic. Try it all, you can't go wrong. And not sure what people are saying about it being expensive. It's around $3 per taco! You can get a solid meal for around $12, with guacamole.

fresh food, reasonable price. people who complain about the portion sizes should really consider going somewhere else. Its about the fresh food, not a Taco Bell size taco. turkey picadillo is awesome fish tacos are awesome working through the rest of the list. great place, wish it was a touch bigger..but still great.

The North Shore is a mecca of mediocrity when it comes to dining. It's not often that I find a restaurant in the area that could survive in the city. This is an exception. These are prize-worthy tacos, to say the least. We tried one of each but the vegetarian and all were divine. My favorites were the steak, pork and El Paso. Salsas provided on the side were smooth and flavorful with heat, just as you'll find in an authentic taquiera in Mexico. The guacamole was made to order, flavourful and fresh. Had it been less chunky (there were avocado chunks in excess of 1-2"), it would have been perfect. That said, this was still a 5-star dining experience. Tip: Order by phone for carry-out. Wait time is about 15 minutes.

Delicious tacos, cute space, good prices. I've only been for lunch, but would love to go in the evening and try a margarita. I've had the crispy shrimp, skirt steak, pollo tinga, blackened tilapia, and chicken breast tacos - all were great.

I am blown away by this place. I agree that the prices are on the high side, but this is definitely my new favorite Mexican anywhere around. The atmosphere is very cool--a tiny joint, but impeccably decorated with cool music--though please lose the giant TV. I learned that the chef from our favorite restaurant (Happ Inn next door) started up this place. The beer battered fish tacos are as good as I've ever had--they are the authentic baja sauce/red cabbage slaw style, and they are off-the-charts good. The guacamole was also perfect, if a little pricey at $6.50. It's made to order though, and it's clear because it's amazing. The only problem was that we ordered it mild, and it must have been a mistake, because it was so spicy it made my son cry. It was a fine for my wife and I, but it did taste like there were habeneros in there as well as jalapenos, and I would characterize it as medium or even spicy. The other tacos we had were the pork al pastor--unexpectedly sweet, but quite good, and the duck--again quite good. I did have a dangerously sharp bone in my duck, so be careful. The winner by far was the aforementioned fish taco. I also ordered the horchata, which was one of the better ones I've had--when I order it at many places, it's kind of gritty, but Taco Nano must have a very fine sieve or cheesecloth to make it so smooth. And it wasn't overly sweet, which was quite nice. The plantains were also as good as they can get--perfectly caramelized on the outside. One small problem was that though they bill themselves as family friendly, they were a bit surprised at the request for a high chair, which was apparently stored in the basement. After a little while they did figure out where it was and very kindly thoroughly disinfected it, which is truly appreciated and so rarely done. Kudos too for not overdoing it on the salt as so many of these trendy new Mexican places do such as Frontera Fresco and El Mexican. I'm so excited to have such a wonderful taqueria in the neighborhood and we will definitely be back soon!

The staff was really helpful working around my gluten and dairy sensitivities. I had the grilled shrimp taco and the brisket taco of the day. Soo good! Fried plantains are amazing. I also love the decor, really bright and cute.

I only live five minutes away, but I went for the first time today and I am blown away! I had the sea of Cortez (tilapia taco), guacamole, and plantains. The fish was so fresh and light; I was surprised how filling the taco was. The guac was also delicious and fresh. The plantains were probably the best I've ever had. I am definitely going back for more. The service was fast, and the employees were very kind and involved. The atmosphere is also great; the decor is a mix of authentic mexican and more modern styles.

Great gourmet tacos in a small friendly locale. The prices are great for what you get. I highly recommend the guacamole and the crispy shrimp taco. Go early or late or order out as the place is tiny. A great find for a quick casual lunch.

  • Foodie W.

Food is great. Would get 5 stars if it wasn't so expensive. Drinks are the most overpriced. $7 for such a small margarita. $2.50 for a 12 ounce soda is ridiculous regardless whether it's mexican soda or not. Service is very slow due mostly to them being busy i assume

    (4)
  • Abby I.

Nothing boring about Taco Nano's delicious selection of tacos and sides. 2-3 tacos are enough to fill the average consumer and priced around $3-4 dollars each, you can't complain about the price for the quality of meats/seafood. The pork-pineapple taco and tilapia tacos are a must try. Seating is very limited at Taco Nano so plan accordingly.

Fantastic tacos! They have a small menu, but I feel like that allows them to make really fantastic food. The guacamole is very good and made to order. I loved the Old El Paso taco. Absolutely delicious! The prices are a little higher than some other places, but definitely worth it. I'll be eating a lot of Taco Nano in the future!

I have been reluctant to write this review because I do not want to start waiting in line or not getting one of the few seats in the place. If this place had a bar, and had a big garage door open to the outside, it could be the Big Star of the North Shore. True Mexican cooking with the freshest of ingredients. Absolutely tremendous tacos for $3-$4. The shrimp taco is the best, but they have a new taco of the week every week, so don't hesitate to try it out. They have beer and margaritas if you absolutely have to drink. Don't we always??? I have read other reviews and a recurring theme seems to be a complaint about the cost ($6.50) of the guacamole. Really people? I guess when compared to a $3 taco yeah, but let's be real. Its only $6.50...

Solid 3.5 stars. I think the prices are a little high but being located in Northfield probably has something to do with that. The fish taco was great! A good sized piece of beer battered fish balanced with a good slaw. It was easily the favorite. The Adobo skirt steak taco had some problems. I thought it was a little bland and I didn't taste much adobo. Also, the tortilla for the steak taco had an outer rim that was equivalent to biting into plastic. No joke, I couldn't bite through it . I don't know what happened but hopefully it was a fluke. The guacamole was awesome though. I thought it was a little expensive but I can't deny that I would order it again, it was that good. The horchata was very watered down and chalky and that I won't be ordering again. All in all, pretty good. You can't really find tacos anywhere in the area besides taco hell and Chipotle. Taco Nano is a welcome option. It's early and I think they'll continue to improve

This was an interesting place that my dad and his friend had found in Northfield. They don't have a lot on the menu but what I had was very good. They have a taco that has shrimp in it. I would recommend the veggie burrito, but it is very spicy and a nice flavor. They had park bench style seating which was fun. We were able to get reviews and share reviews with other diners.

Believe the hype - this place is great. Fresh, clean and imaginative both the food and the atmosphere. The prices are spot on - you pay for quality people and this place offers the love for free. Special treat to meet the chef owner working his counter and his craft.

Guacamole is outstanding ! They make it in front of you, ask how spicy you like and proceed with the process. They cut the avocados to order, add jalapeño to meet your choice of spicyness and wow it's amazing! Te tacos are great too! ,

I didn't enjoy the duck or the blackened tilapia tacos. Both were bland. Owner has an unequivocal and vocal preference for customers ordering at least two tacos. Everyone knows how big a taco is, fyi. Although the tacos are regular taco sized, the fillings are too sparse. It's curious to me also, that the 1st To Review was 3 days before this restaurant opened.

3.5 stars. Food is definately good and quality however I still think it is overpriced. The tacos are small and unlike other reviewers, two tacos wasn't even close to filling me up and I'm a small woman! I just feel that for a casual spot such as this I wouldn't pay more to eat here than a sit-down Mexican restaurant with servers. Again, the food is better than most, but one taco is not worthy of a $3-$4 price tag. And that doesn't include sides! However, I'll go here again because I love mexican food, I just won't dine here that often. Seating area is very limited and feels too cramped for my liking. Might be hard to find seating at peak times.

This is a terrific little taco shop. Everything appears to be made to order, including the tortillas. This can lead to a slightly longer wait, but hey, it's fresh. Even with a small menu, Taco Nano is able to cover the whole spectrum of tacos. There is beef, chicken, fish, veggie, shrimp, and pork. There is even a taco of the week. The flavors are excellent and never overpowering. Each taco is filed to it's max capacity, so there's definitely no skimping. I have only done take out here. The only thing preventing me from giving TN 5 stars is the price. That being said, you NEED to stop by TN and try this local option.

my first and last time dining here. I gave this place 2 stars because atleast the staff was friendly. I went here against my coworkers advise and boy did i regret it! 1) the place is pretty expensive (almost $7 for a tiny amount of guac, $3-4 for a small taco) 2) the vegetarian tacos were just absolutely gross. All I could taste is mushrooms and some sort of cheese. 3) the Mexican rice consists of rice and tomato sauce. it would've been nice if the vegetarian taco contained some more fresh ingredients such as guacamole, beans, onions, you know, what normal tacos have. i was so disappointed and my coworkers told me they had similar experiences.

Came in last night, totally jazzed up to try a new taco place (yay for Mexican food in the area!), and knowing the chef is also from Happ Inn, figured we couldn't go wrong. I knew the place was going to be small based on the reviews, but wasn't expecting it to be so small that they couldn't fit a high chair anywhere. At least, that's what we were told when we asked. And no, no plans to get one. Just not enough space. As a mother of a one and a half year old and another on the way, I just don't have patience for restaurants in the suburbs who blatantly don't help cater to families. So with nowhere to put my child, we placed the order to go. I had the grilled fish taco and the old el paso, my husband had the old el paso and the skirt steak, and we all shared the rice, quesadilla, and plantains. My fish taco was great, and my husband really liked the skirt steak, but we both agreed the old el paso was just meh. I thought it was way too greasy, with oil dripping out of the taco. The rice and quesadilla were a hit with the little one, but the two adults agreed it was really nothing special. So, while I was super excited to have another taco option in the neighborhood, the reality is I'm probably not going to come back, as their unwillingness to put a high chair in really irks me. My advice- stick to Happ Inn in the area for awesome food, and if you're in the mood for really good Mexican, head over to Frontera Fresca in Old Orchard Mall for serious quality.

Great for take-out to bring home for easy dinner with the family. If you're planning to "eat-in", there is a likelihood you'll have to wait a bit as the restaurant is tiny, but usually by the time you order (at the counter) and the food is ready, a table will free up. Relax & order a Beer if you get antsy! The only reason its not 5 stars, is that it is just "slightly" overpriced relative to the size of the tacos (you buy them individually), however, the quality & convenience more than make up for it! Recommend the Fish tacos too...those are good!

Addicted to Taco Nano!! I never thought I would use the words addicted and taco in the same same sentence considering I have never been a big fan of tacos in general. Taco Nano has changed my opinion, and fueled my cravings for the best tacos I have EVER had. Every thing is made to order, so it is hot and fresh. Emphasis on fresh. My favorites are the Sea of Cortez and the Camarones!! Amazingly fresh fish with crispy cabbage and the perfect amount of heat in the sauce( not sure what they are) The El Pastor delicious with a great blend of spicy and sweet. The staff is welcoming and extremely efficient..always a pleasure to walk in there. The space is cheerful and welcoming and there is almost alway a spot to eat, however, the tacos travel really well so take out is a a good option here for people who want to eat at home. My only complaint is that it is not open on Sundays when I don't want to cook, but I guess everyone deserves a day off.

Great experience! As a southern CA native I have high taco standards, and these were up to par. The flavors were not traditional but hit the spot. I had the special mahi mahi taco, the battered tilapia, and the vegetarian. Bright, complex flavors and fresh ingredients. Service was quick, decor was colorful, good vibes and friendly people. Nice to have a quick and inexpensive lunch option in the area around work.

These tacos are by far the best I have had here in Chicago. There is only one other restaurant that I go to as a pilgrimage for tacos and it's in North Carolina. I'm thrilled I stumbled upon Taco Nano. Everything about it is amazing. The fresh guacamole, their crispy fried plantains and the tacos... oh the tacos. Make the effort to get there. You won't be disappointed.

Great Addition to the North Shore restaurant scene and great tacos in general. Better than Big Star which is high praise for Chicago tacos (however nothing beats Big Star's atmosphere). I finally made it to Taco Nano after hearing my family's rave reviews. It totally lived up to all the hype. The menu features a great variety of tacos. Everyone in my family said their taco was the best...and we all had different ones. To each their own I guess. We all could agree that the guacamole is AMAZING. Definitely get an order to eat with tortilla chips or dollop on tacos (especially delicious with the turkey picadillo). The margaritas are great. Chef Freddy Sanchez informed us that the margarita mix is made with agave syrup instead of sugar. This decision is in keeping with his philosophy of fresh, authentic, and healthy ingredients. Chef Freddy was so nice and passionate while he stopped by our table and chatted with us. Definitely worth a visit...already looking forward to my next one!

These are the best tacos! Everything is fresh and made in house, including the tortillas, made to order. Great combinations of flavors, perfect seasonings. The guacamole and fired plantains rock. And now, they have beer and margaritas--the best margaritas! They are sour and strong. It is worth the drive to Northfield! The only downside is the place is small with a communal table so it is not conducive to hanging out with your margaritas.

I believe many of the "yelpers" reviewing this Taqueria are missing the point. It is not supposed to be a full service restaurant and I find it quite ridiculous some people are docking the place based on this fact. God forbid you have to get yourself a glass of water when you are not paying for waiter service. I love this new addition to the neighborhood. There are very few options in the area for a quick bite, satisfying lunch, or late night munch. The tacos are fresh and everything is house made. My favorites have been the duck confit mole and the al pastor. I think the decor is chic and adds some flavor to the otherwise pretty monotonous North Shore restaurant scene. I hope I will be enjoying food from here for many more years.

I agree with the review below. A lot of people aren't really "getting it". The reason why the tacos are a bit pricier than other taco joints is because they are using QUALITY ingredients which you can tell right from the first bite! I went in last night with my husband and parents since my dad has been raving about it since it first opened and he was right on! I had the steak tacos, guacamole and Mexican rice which all tasted so good! I am a big Mexican food fan and have been to plenty taco joints and this is easily one of my favorites! My family had the Sea of Cortez tacos with the blackened tilapia which were awesome as well! Everything was delicious and the service was great! Food came out really quickly! Can't wait to go back again!

really love taco nano! been here a handful of times and ordered something different every time i go. i tried everything on the menu except the duck confit. top favorites in order: 1. shrimp taco (only offered occasionally, when it is available - i order 3-4!) 2. beer battered fish taco 3. blackened fish taco 4. steak taco 5. ground turkey taco i agree, 2 tacos are not enough. i will order a minimum of 3 or 4 if i'm starving. i think the price is right for what you are getting. cute place, can be hard to sit down and eat depending on when you go. it's community seating, so get comfortable. wish they were open on sunday - would be a great place to lunch with kids. my only down side is the guacamole. it is good and who doesn't love guac, but it is too expensive. $6.50 for guacamole?!?! the helping is on a small size - think palm size. other than that, i hear it's easy for take out. we always dine in. now, if they start serving margaritas....(they do serve beer - so grab one while you're waiting)

Lots of restaurants have opened on the north shore in the last year and this is the my favorite addition. Flavorful, easy, reasonably priced. All the tacos I've tasted have been great. I personally love simple authentic tacos- meat, onion, cilantro. This isn't that but they do the 'elevated' taco really well. Yeah, my fried shrimp taco had watercress on it, it's that kind of place. What they do they do well though and I highly recommend this place.

Amazing! It's great to always have a new local place but I was blown away by the food. On opening day we tried almost everything on the menu and it didn't disappoint. It's open late - come soon before the New Trier kids catch on....

  • Robert V.

Prices were a little high for the size of the tacos. The menu options sounded good, but they were unable to mix and match. I asked them to make the Ground Turkey taco substituted with pork, but they were unable to accommodate me as the pork is already mixed with other ingredients. More choices would improve this place immensely. In spite of all this, the tacos I had were good.

Tonight was our first time ordering Taco Nano. Guacamole was awesome, blackened tilapia was terrific, pork was super tasty and chicken taco was excellent! Key for my wife was that for take out the food traveled well home and tasted great 1/2 hour later.... Will definitely go back and may even eat there, they have cerveza and the small dining area is very clean...

Overpriced for a good (not great) taco. $6.50 for a small cup of guacamole? Catering to the neighborhood status.

  • Jon L.

I love good tacos, and these are outstanding. The combinations of flavors are creative, unconventional, and delicious. I tried the Sea of Cortez, and the Vegetariano. Both good; I liked the Vegetariano flavors better. And their special at that time was a shrimp taco - I did not know a seafood taco could taste this good. It was *outstanding*. Taco Naco serves great guacamole and plantains as well. My only complaint might be that the taco shells are lightly fried, so less healthy than some tacos can be - although certainly tastier. I think the menu could also use another vegetarian staple.

  • Sheryl A.

Have now been here three times. I feel the prices are fine, I can eat two tacos and a water for a $6 lunch. I thought the guacamole was overpriced until I tried it. It is definitely worth it.. I look forward to going back and having the plantains. This is good fresh food, made with care. I have now met both the husband and wife owners. They are both passionate about this place. I hope it stays for many years!

From the moment I stepped into the small, vibrant restaurant, I was so happy to have this new spot in the neighborhood. Everyone was so friendly, and the food was delicious! I had two tacos, which filled me up for lunch -- and at just $6 for my fresh, great meal, I will certainly frequent this spot! The Old El Paso is a classic beef taco -- so yummy, and the Pork Al Pastor was a unique treat: the pineapple pico de gallo added the perfect flavor. What a perfect meal!

This place is great! The staff is exceptional, and the food is just the same. I had the pork tacos, guacamole, and mexican rice- all of which were phenomenal. I can't wait to go back.

So, another taco place opens up in the North Shore. Exciting, but also many things to consider. I will say that at very least I enjoyed this place more than the previous restaurant that occupied this space. Tacos were fantastic. The duck confit mole was delicious. Served in newspaper, I guess to give some sort of faux-street-style feel to the place? I could really care less about what they serve it to me in as long as it tastes good. The place is small, only a few tables, and really no table service. We had to pour our own water, get our own napkins, etc. Prices are definitely on the higher end for what you're getting. I wouldn't really complain normally but because Taco DIablo exists in Evanston these guys are going to have some stiff competition. I'd also like to suggest that everyone steer away from the horchata, it was far too chalky, and it's not terribly hard to find it being made better elsewhere. Overall I think that the fantastic tacos and the closer location will make me want to come back, but it's hard to say no to places like Taco Diablo or Tacos El Norte that offer the same quality of food but at lower prices and with options for combo plates.

Some of the best tacos I've ever eaten but one of the worst restaurant environments I've ever been in. This is a pure take-out taco "stand" masquerading as a storefront restaurant. There is seating for about 15 people (maybe) but in the loudest, coldest, hardest surfaced environment ever. The gas station quality paper towel "napkins" (yes, the long skinny tri-folded grey ones) and dentist office sized plastic cups (4 oz.) are a classy touch - seriously? Add to this that every time the door opened the temperature inside drops about 40 degrees and you'll want their tacos but TAKE OUT ONLY. What saddens me is that had they gone all in and done a "Frontera Grill" style restaurant with real seating, table service, etc., the place would be swamped. Surely there's ample space in Northfield, Glenview, Northbrook to have made this happen. Loved the tacos but if I were you, I'd spend the money to find a proper restaurant or get an even smaller space and hire a bunch of delivery drivers.

I love this place! The seating area so quaint, much like the village it is situated in..cozy and fun. THe food is delicious, very fresh and well worth the price. I had my daughters birthday dinner there and we had a ball. Staff is so helpful and kind...so happy to have this little gem in my backyard. You don't need more than two taco's to fill up...the blackened talapia taco is the best ever. I also love the long community seating table! finally in the burbs! I met a lovely person while visiting for lunch and had a few little kids join in on the Happy Birthday...real hometown feel!

Meh. $8 for two tacos that were pretty standard and all sides are ala carte. I guess northfield rents are super high. For great tacos I'd skip this place and head to Los huaraches on Milwaukee. More food. Same quality. Less money. yelp.com/biz/los-huarach… . However Taco Nano wins on decor, but food and value go to Los huaraches

  • Helene B.

The food was okay. The veggie tacos were so-so. The quesadillas were good. Nothing was stand out though. The reason I won't be going back is because it was so overpriced. When I saw the menu online I thought it would be a find. The truth is the taco was so small, and there was no chips, rice or beans included. It would be around $12-15 a person to get filled for mediocre food.

About Taco Bell

Taco Bell is a haven for Mexican delicacies such as tacos, quesadillas, burritos, nachos, and other specialty items. Owned by Yum! Brands, Inc. Taco Bell is one of the fastest growing American chains of fast food restaurants. The restaurant operates from 7,072 different locations which are mostly run by independent franchisees and licensees.

The background story of Taco Bell is interesting and inspiring for budding entrepreneurs. The fast-food brand is the brainchild of Glen Bell, who started his first food venture as a hot dog seller in San Bernardino, California. The year was 1948. After witnessing long queues outside a Mexican restaurant called Mitla Café across the street, Bell saw the opportunity and demand for hard-shelled Tacos. He reverse-engineered the recipe and later started selling Tacos and called the venture Taco-Tia.

Later, the name changed from Taco-Tia to El Taco. Eventually, Glen Bell sold the company to his partner and opened the first Taco Bell in Downey in 1962. By 1964, the restaurant also got its first franchise in Torrance. The 100th Taco Bell restaurant was opened by 1965. PepsiCo acquired Taco Bell from Glen Bell in 1978 and the restaurant brand is currently a subsidiary of Yum! Brands which looks after the restaurant business of PepsiCo.

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
