BEST Chinese food in the Chicagoland area. Enough said.

Great lunch spot and they are VERY busy. Get the heck out and don't take up their table unnecessarily. Had the fish with veggie lunch plate. It's not greasy and quite tasty. Would definitely go back. At 12:30 on a Friday, there's a line of 10 people waiting for a table.

Love Tong's and eat lunch here whenever I can. Great value, tasty fresh food, fast service--some might find it too fast, but it is a small space so they keep things moving.

I have been to this restaurant a few times and usually I am satisfied, but the last time I went there l was let down. The food was just ok. It did come out very fast, too fast, which lets you think it is all pre-prepared and not made to order. Prices are a little high in my opinion, but for a sit down restaurant, they are probably about average. The atmosphere is comfortable but I feel the wait staff is always hovering or watching you. I would not rush back there, but if you are looking for Chinese food in the immediate area, you could try it out for lunch.

On my quest to find some decent Chinese food in lazy distance from my home (i.e. less than 30min), I tried out Tong's. Located in a strip mall with the Dominick's, this place is hidden away in the corner area with a bunch of other little stores that are surprisingly still open. I say surprisingly, because on first glance it looks like it's nothing but empty store windows in a strip mall-ghost town. Then you realize that the corner of the mall actually has stores that are (apparently) still doing business. I opted for carryout - my fried rice and mongolian beef were alright. The beef wasn't as crispy as I liked and it was drowning in sauce, making it boring and unmemorable. However, ordering from there was fast and the price wasn't too bad for the area, but in the end, I wasn't impressed enough to come back, especially with all the other options available. Overall, a decent place but nothing mind-blowing.

Yummy! For a small, affordable, casual dinning experience...happy to have stumbled across this place! Had crab Rangoon (one of the best) crispy, light, fluffy, & there was actual crab meat. Ordered orange chicken and shrimp fried rice. Was delicious!

Came here for takeout Friday night. Ordered the pineapple fried rice, I do not eat red meat so I asked if I could substitute for the BBQ pork. The lady said why don't you just get the shrimp fried rice and I will add pineapple. Well that was dumb because they charged me extra for pineapple, so my meal ended up being more expensive than a pineapple fried rice. I was not informed of this until they charged my card. The lady who took my order curly shirt hair with glasses had an attitude. Did not have good eye contact and was unauthentic. This place could have had potential because the ambiance while nothing stellar actually looked comfortable. While my fried rice was actually one of the better I had in the burbs, which is hard to come by, I refuse to give my business with someone with an attitude. This isn't just the typical Asian takeout place with poor customer service, but a business that actually is just plain rude.

I've been here twice when my boss has taken us out to lunch, the first time i got shrimp with lobster sauce, which was good, and then the mongolian beef, which was also really good, both times i got a side of fried rice, they have complimentary hot tea which is also good, the service is super fast, i dont know how they can bring dishes out that fast, but they make it work, the lunch prices are also a really good deal, definitely a good place for chinese in the NW burbs

I was absolutely shocked at how quickly we were waited on and served our food. The lunch special cannot be beat - rice, entree, crab wonton, and soup for ~$8. Very filling and great! While their service is extremely fast and attentive, I was a little upset because they cleared my plate before I was done with it. I wanted to finish the crab wonton, but really didn't need to (which is why I didn't stop her from taking my plate). I didn't like feeling like i was being rushed through there. However, it'd be great with that speedy service if I was in a hurry...like, for example, if I'm on my lunch break. Sesame chicken was awesome!

Under $10 for tea, soup, rice, entree, crab won ton and fortune cookie? Sign me up! The food was all quite good (especially if you take the price into consideration). The decor could definitely use some updating--looks straight out of 80s...but my husband claims that is not unexpected from a good Chinese restaurant. Overall, we'll be back digging into the lunch special but could use a couple of tweaks for that fifth star.

    * Servers (5 stars--think Jimmy John fast). This restaurant is the House of the Five Servers. Different servers come each step of the way. One server turned out to be our designated recipient of the 'No MSG' request, our several requests for that. Being a savvy order taker, he announced there was no MSG at all for anything. The six of us stayed in control of our table's destiny by not ordering until we were ready. (3 waiter visits and turn-aways for him until the fourth). This is another way of saying that the wait staff views speed to be of the essence. (I wonder if restaurants have customer reviews: 'Good tippers, slow on the MSG info, possible table hoggers'). * Appetizers (2 stars). That is, I dissent from the Yelp highlights-- do forget the egg-rolls--they are not amazing! At least on a Sunday evening around 5 o'clock. (My contrarian view to what is summarized from others). Besides the egg roll, we shared sizzling rice soup which was tepid and not sizzling. Might they make appetizers in advance to serve super freaky fast? * Entrees (4 stars). Let me explain this part. The key to this restaurant I think is sticking to the main courses (very good, 4 stars) and shying away from the appetizers (soup and egg rolls). 3 of our group of six shared three entrees--the spice crew it would appear. Beef with broccoli, Kung Pao Chicken and a Spicy shrimp of some sort--good spiciness, not scorching (two diners had been to China and felt spice was extreme there; this was good). The non-sharers with more demanding dietary focus, each seem pleased with their order. One had fried rice, and another the mu shu. Very reasonably priced. So get in, enjoy, get out--quick, quick!

Not good. Tried some staples, hot and sour soup and cashew chicken. Hot and sour soup was bland, looked like dirty dishwater and tasted like it too. Cashew chicken was fair but again lacked flavor

There seems to be a shortage of good Chinese food restaurants in the area. We've tried several, and Tong's was definitely the winner. One star off for no delivery.

Get the Coral Shrimp. It comes in a tangy sweet and sour sauce that is medium-mild spicy. Plenty of fresh vegetables and big perfectly cooked shrimp. Your mouth will thank you. The pot stickers and accompanying sauce are also above average. Everything else we had was above average flavor with all entrees coming with a good variety of vegetables and above average quality tender meat.

This place is always just ok. Never great, never bad. Service is almost too much. I don't like when my entree comes 2 minutes after my soup. Whoa cowboy. Slow it down there! They make any accommodation you ask ie no onions, extra spicy, no veggies, etc. The tea is great, and they keep it coming. Unlimited and free! This is our go-to place for family lunch. Tea, soup, crab Rangoon, rice, entree, fortune cookies or almond for $8. It's a good deal!

Small place, but great food dine in or take out. I like their soups, and Kung Pao Trio, Yu Shiang two delicacies, and Happy Family. They do not use MSG and you can request no corn starch.

My family and I have been ordering from Tong's Hunan for YEARS, literally. I can't really comment on the service because we only order for takeout, but the food is always spot on. Everything we have ever tried is delicious, and the Mongolian Beef here is one of my favorite. They have the food prepared within 10-20 minutes of ordering it, and I've never had to wait any extra time. The restaurant is very small, and has this weird smell to it, so I am glad we get the food to go. But it seems to always have people in it, which makes me believe that the service is not that bad as some other Yelpers are saying. It's a bit on the expensive side, but if you get a minimum of two entrees, they give you these ridiculously good (rice) cookies, that seem to be on the healthier side ;) You can always ask for those if you order less, but I think they end up charging for them. Also, don't forget the egg rolls - they are amazing! Tong's will forever be our to go takeout for Chinese.

We went there last night for dinner on the way back from the airport, having heard good things about the food. The restaurant is a small, family-owned place and you can tell that by the service. The language barrier did make the service feel rough, but we think they mean well. The food on the other hand was great, including the Egg Rolls and Orange Beef. It was all brought out very quickly and the Almond Cookies were a great way to top off the meal. I think we might give it another try, possibly for take out.

Only ever ordered take out in the last two years. Food is excellent -all dishes, and the people are very nice. Reasonably priced as well.

The two stars have solely to do with the service. I'd give the food four stars. I've been a fairly regular Tong's customer for many years. I eat there a couple of times a month, sometimes more. I love their won ton soup, egg rolls, fried rice, and many of their entrees. However, a recent incident with their waitstaff has made me reconsider being a dine-in customer and become a take-out guy only. Two of my friends and I dine out for lunch on a weekly basis. We go to different restaurants in the northern suburbs, and since the three of us were very familiar with Tong's, we decided that it would be our lunch place for that week. We ordered off the lunch special menu, which includes soup and a crab rangoon. Since we were all fans of the hot and sour soup, we all ordered it. Two of us received full bowls of soup, while the third guy was only given a half bowl. When he POLITELY mentioned this to the waiter, the waiter rudely and abruptly reached across the table and snatched the bowl away, nearly spilling the contents on my friend. This was unprofessional, and totally uncalled for. At that point, the three of us discussed the possibility of paying for our soups and leaving the restaurant. Five minutes later, a new, and full, bowl of soup was brought to my friend. From that point on, the service at our table slowed to a crawl. Another employee, the manager we believe, brought us the check. There were no offers to refill our beverages. The bus staff did a nice job clearing the table at the end of our meal, but we didn't receive any more visits from the troublesome waiter...which may have been a good thing looking back in retrospect. Everyone, including waiters and waitresses, have good days and bad days. But when a simple request for a full bowl of soup is met with such hostility and unprofessional behavior, that's not good for anyone involved. As a result of this incident, two things are certain: 1) the three of us won't dine in their dining room any more, either individually or collectively. 2) while I still will be a customer, because the food is so good, I will limit my business to carry out only. It's too bad that this incident with the waiter affected our decision not to dine in at Tong's anymore. If you want great food, for carryout, then Tong's is a great choice. Or if you're one of those people who enjoy surly waiters, and get a tingle up your spine at the prospect of possibly having hot soup spilled in your lap, then Tong's would be a wise choice for you too.

This place is definitely a hole in the wall. I honestly don't know if you should trust the meat, but I would recommend the veggie dishes. You get a really generous portion for lunch (fried rice, entree, soup, and appetizer for under $10). They give you unlimited amounts of green tea, so it's authentic to the dim sum culture. It is a family-run business, and the people could be a little nicer. I just felt like they were rushing us the entire time, but besides that, I had a great time.

We have been going to Tongs for dine in and carry out since it opened. The service is friendly and the food is amazing. They are also able to accommodate larger parties. Highly recommend!

Don't order extra rice, they will charge you $1.25. Stupid people could add a few cents to the entrees. It is the principal not the money . If it happens to u complain loudly adele

This place is SO ghetto - and I love it... LOL This is one of the local business lunch places. It's TINY, so you kinda have to get there early to get a table. This place is kidna like a production line, they try to get people in and out so fast. And they're not really friendly, kindly rude, to be honest. The waiters like barely understand English. And they don't care to. They come by and try to rush you in to ordering. They don't ask if you want anything to drink, you have to specifically ask. The food comes and you eat. The food is decent, but the best part is that the prices are really reasonable. This is why it's a busy lunch place: good prices and in & out service. The food is OK. Not great. But not horrible. I don't know why, but I really enjoy coming here. Despite it's shortcomings. Oh - did I mention the decor? SO 1980's. LOL

I like coming here because the food is always fresh and good. The service is great in addition. Haven't had a dish yet that I didn't like.

Standard strip mall Chinese. The flavors are unimpressive and the dished nothing to write home about. Its a great, unflashy place to grab lunch with a medium sized group in a limited amount of time. The chicken dishes appear to be the best. Again, this place looks better in this area due to a lack of Asian options. So don't take this 3 star review as a means to travel more than 3 miles for this place.

Great food, great prices. It's comical that 5 different members of their staff serve you - 1) hostess seats you 2) waiter #1 asks you what you want to drink 3) busboy brings you your drinks 4) waiter # 2 takes order and serves order and takes your payment 5) cashier brings you your processed credit card & receipt The complimentary hot tea and ice water are tasty, so no need to buy drinks. They always ask if you want to take the remainder of your meal home, and they have take home containers in the dinning area. This is a nice way of them letting you know that that they rather give every customer a container instead of filling their dumpster with food. Its an odd feeling sitting in the dinning room facing security cameras, I understand some places should have cameras such as banks and police stations, but a dinning room of a Chinese restaurant in Northbrook ?

  • Kristin Z.

Quick service, descent pricing (especially for lunch). Not a fan that they won't let me substitute my crab ragoon that comes with the lunch special with an egg roll. I typically get the Kung Pao Chicken and it's pretty tasty. The place is worth checking out if you're in the mood for Chinese.

    (4)
  • Amanda B.

I love their fried rice and soups. Some of the other dishes are not my favorites and the service is typical for a Chinese restaurant - just average. They have a full bar and extensive menu. The owner is extremely friendly and always ensures that each customer is happy.

  • Melanie V.

For all of you working in Northbrook/Deerfield, you can attest that the quality of the Chinese food is SERIOUSLY lacking. Nothing ever tastes right - even the Americanized stuff. RIght? Right. Enter Tong's. Pretty extensive lunch menu! For about $7-$8, you can get soup, crab rangoon and an entree. Good deal, huh? I recently got the twice cooked pork (pork with cabbage, green peppers in a thicker brown sauce) and it was delicious! It was super flavorful, but not too greasy. The best part is that the food didn't put me in a MSG-induced coma in the afternoon. It's never too crowded, service is friendly and the food comes out FAST. Perfect for the lunch hour!

  • Christine S.

Since I work up North I make this my go-to for Chinese during the work week... There really aren't many (or good) Chinese restaurants in the area. I normally get the Mongolian beef (pretty damn good) and hot & sour soup (good as well). The only thing I really don't like is that they won't sub the crab ragoon for a veggie egg roll (I'm allergic to shellfish). So, I just give my crab ragoon to whomever else I'm dining with. The servers there are hysterical (but they don't mean to be)... Think "A Christmas Story" when you're ordering... It's just like that. Lot's of unintentional yelling!

  • Kurt B.

Best Chinese food in the north suburbs. I don't eat chicken, but here's an abridged assessment based upon years of visits. Great: Hunan crispy fish, honey walnut shrimp, homestyle bean curd, onion pancakes, pot stickers Good: shrimp in lobster sauce, Mongolian beef, steaming rice soup for two, crab rangoon, Buddhist delight, moo shu Pass: egg rolls, sesame shrimp or beef, peppers and beef, pork dishes, fried rice It's better to do take-out as the restaurant space itself is fairly middle of the road. But for quantity/quality for the price Tong's is impossible to beat. One entree could feed two hungry people for under $12.

  • Michelle M.

Did you know? If you're in a rush for lunch, Tong's can probably get you out in 20 minutes! This place is somewhat crazy. After being seated, we were served our soups. They had not taken our drink orders or anything yet, but asked us if we wanted one of two soups. The waiter had told us that everything came with a soup, so he went ahead to serve it to us. If you're in a rush, this may be excellent for you. However, for us, it was just confusing. We felt like he rushed us and sometimes you just want to enjoy yourself. I ordered the kung pao chicken and it was typical chinese restaurant food. It wasn't really amazing, but somewhat greasy, oily, food court food. Overall, I wasn't impressed. It's a stable choice, but if you're looking for amazing, look somewhere else.

  • Joey M.

Don't let the strip mall location fool you, there isn't a better Chinese place for miles. Tens of miles. At least. Their menu borderlines on overwhelming, offering an expansive selection and a good amount of variety. All but guarantees that even if you don't really like Chinese food, you'll be able to find something you like. I won't claim to have tried everything on the menu, but I've yet to find something I didn't enjoy. All the dishes seem very well made, no strange meat bits mixed in and the veggies are uncommonly fresh. The portions are generous, especially considering the modest cost. Excellent choice for going in and even better to take out.

Have been going to Tong's since the day they opened.. No Kidding..we are fans of chinese food and happened to stop in on their opening day. Tong's has the best "mandarin" style chinese food around. Their potstickers and hot and sour soup are the best! My favorite dishes are the Szhechaun 2 delicacies and their General Tso's Chicken. The owner Kevin Tong is very friendly and although they have a small dining room.. it has a very cozy feel.

  • Michael S.

Are you kidding? Don't know anything about the food because we have been waiting an hour and a half for our carry out order! Insanity! Unfortunately you can't give 0 stars.

    (1)
  • Liv H.

Better than China North which is across the street. Lunch specials are ~$7-8. Really fast! I'd call ahead to order, be there in 5 minutes, and they'd be done or almost done with the food while I'm paying. I think the Mongolian Beef is their best dish. The hot and sour soup is good too.

When I'm out in the suburbs, this place is tops on my list. Totally raised the bar for me in terms of fast Chinese food. The common disappointment that I find with most places like this is quality of ingredients. Not so here. Consistently the freshest vegetables and highest quality meats of any Chinese place that I've experienced. I've never bitten into a piece of chicken, beef, or fish and wondered what I might be chewing on. Never found a bone, never found any gristle, and have never found any tendon, cartilage, or anything else for that matter. Vegetables have all been crisp and never over cooked. And, of the various dishes that I've tried, I'd have to say that the sauces are just as amazing as the quality of the ingredients. In fact, so much so that one of my favorite dishes is a seafood dish - very unusual for me as I'm really a beef kinda guy. Probably the best hot-n-sour soup I've ever had. Probably the best pot stickers I've ever had. Easily the best fish dish I've ever had (Hunan Crispy Fish). I could go on and on. And, yes, it is slightly more expensive than the cheap joints but, honestly, you get what you pay for. If you want to pay for gristle and cartilage, go somewhere else. If you want to pay for rotten veggies, go to Stanleys's.

Tong's is a well oiled machine! I have been coming for years as its a popular lunch spot with co-workers and friends in the area. Once you sit down you can start seeing the cogs pop out left and right. Seriously, they usually have employees running around everywhere to bring out the most efficient service. First, you have your menu employee. Next up, the soup guy. The menu guy comes and takes your order and food flies out within 10 minutes. The check finds its way to your table exactly when your done with food. For a business lunch crowd, the service is just excellent. Their lunch menu is really big and relatively inexpensive. Every dish I have had there in the 5+ years of going there has been really good. Go Tong's!

  • Tracey M.

I have to say, my favorite Chinese spot now has to share that title with Tong's. I've been to Tong's on several occasions and it's stuff! Under normal circumstances I would get Sweet and Sour Chicken, but I have to say their Mongolian Beef and Sesame Chicken are also "must haves." The service at Tong's is very good and staff is really nice. The portions are just as nice - even when you are taking out. All in all, Tong's is where I plan to go for Chinese whenever I'm in the hood - and so should you!

  • tatiana c.

An old neighborhood staple, I'd drive to visit my dad in the burbs' just to eat at Tong's. Hands down, the best Chinese food I have eaten. Too bad no one can cook like this in the City. China Town always disappoints, but Tong's always made me happy. Sold my childhood home this week and sadly, won't be up in these parts any time soon. May have to take a special trip out to enjoy my hot and sour soup and hunan veggies.... If you live in NBK or surrounding suburbs, don't let the fact that Tong's is in a strip mall discourage you. This place is great!

I went to Tong's for lunch with coworkers today. A wide selection of very reasonably-priced lunch specials, as everyone has mentioned, which include soup, tea, fried rice, a crab rangoon and a decently-sized entree. I had the Sesame Chicken, which was quite good. The egg drop soup was good -- I've had better, but I've had a lot worse. I was disappointed by the fried rice, though. Any time I need to add soy sauce to fried rice to get some flavor, it knocks my review down a star. Personally, I found the service a little bit rude. Before I had even opened the menu to find that soup came with the lunch specials, a server was nearly yelling, "Take soup!" and wouldn't leave the table until we took some. I was also verbally compelled to forfeit said soup when the entrees came, even though I was only half done with it. All in all, I'd certainly go back if my coworkers were going there (and try the Mongolian Beef that other reviews have raved about), but it won't be my first choice.

Tong's was also recommended to me by my Boss - and my girlfriend and I were not impressed. You don't get much bang for your buck, and the taste of the food is just average overall. I rate China North (across Sanders, right across the street) higher because of the value and the taste. There is really nothing all that special about Tong's Hunan. When we ordered take out, the portions were small and the taste was pretty bland. While it isn't Chinatown, it doesn't appeal to my tastes for authentic chinese food. I can't pinpoint what difference is, but it Tong's simply did not satsify me.

Lightning fast service, clean place, lunch specials, and good food. What more do you want in a restaurant? Well, I have driven past this place a million times and didn't even know it was there. But today, I was lucky enough to have lunch with a couple colleagues here. I am struggling to find anything that wasn't perfect. If I have to find something to complain about, it is that the service was too good! Check this place out for a quick and affordable lunch....not on me though!

I literally live around the corner from Yen Yen, but my husband and I think it is terrible so we take the 10-15 minute drive southeast to Tongs to get our Chinese fix a couple of times a month. I love their sesame beef, it is really flavorful. Their egg rolls are good too! This coming from a girl who grew up eating Kow Kow egg rolls (which are probably the best on the planet). We never dine in, always carry out . Service is quick and the prices are reasonable.

  • Brad S.

This place was horrible!!! The food was lousy, espcecially for the price. 2 dishes and a rice cost $34. The chicken was inedible. My kids couldn't even chew it and had to spit it out. The veggie fried rice had absolutley no taste and I'm still wondering where the veggies are. The only thing that was decent was the Moo Shu. Won't be going back there.

This is one of my favorite Chinese restaurants close to work, so you will often see my co-workers and me eating here once every two weeks or so. The place is tucked away in a shopping plaza next to a Dominicks or a Jewel. The place is very small and an assuming, but at lunch time, the place is always packed, and there are always allot of Asians, like me eating there. I like that their lunch time is very affordable, around $6 and the portions are huge. They also give you a large bowl of soup, either egg drop or hot & sour soup and a crab Rangoon which comes with your meal. They have unique Chinese Lunch specials that I don't normally see in other Chinese restaurants in the area, like their Tofu in black bean curd and your choice of meat, or White fish in chili sauce or Shrimp in their version of lobster sauce. All the co-workers that I have taken here have raved how good the food is and how affordable it was. The place is clean enough and the service is fast, but not the friendliest. Its like they just want to get your order quickly so they can get you out of there fast.

We didn't eat in so I can't comment on service. I thought the food was better than average. We ordered sesame chicken and mongolian beef. The battered deep fried chicken wasn't dried out and chewy or swimming in gloppy candy-like sauce like some other carry-out I've tried. The beef was tender and delicious, the scallions nice and crunchy. I would have liked more rice stick and maybe some shrimp chips. Entrees are a little pricier, maybe cause it's Northbrook. When all was said and done, we're talking $25 for 2 entrees. I like a restaurant that gives you free egg rolls if you spend $25 or more. I frequent many restaurants that are on par with this one that do offer extras. Maybe they feel that it is below them? They didn't offer anything, but they did give both fortune cookies and oh-so-yummy lard-enriched almond cookies. Lard is good. I will probably come back sometime with the whole family to try some of the other dishes.

I am not particularly fond of this restaurant. The egg rolls had large chunks of cabbage that I didn't care for at all. I ordered the Mongolian Beef which was good, but I wouldn't rave about it. The rice was old and hard. I have been there a few times and the staff is not very friendly. They hover around the tables waiting for you to finish your meal and then grab the plates and bring the check immediately. It's a very rushed feeling. The waiter never came back to the table after serving us to see if we needed more tea or a refill on our beverages. One of the guests at our table asked for coffee and they don't have it. The waiter walked away and under his breath to another waiter, made fun of the fact that someone wanted coffee but no food. The staff is just plain rude and unfriendly. They don't thank you when you leave and in fact, our waiter picked up the signed sales receipt to look at the tip and then walked away. I did leave 20% and he never even said thank you. Would definitely not go back again. Much better Chinese food elsewhere and definitely more welcoming atmospheres.
