I've been ordering Lou's for years.. since they started shipping it. I am also a transplant that can't live without my Lou Malnati's. I send them to my other family members and friends who also are now living out West. I always get the 2 pizza pepperoni sausage combination. Here is a tip: Make your own butter crust by melting about 2 tblsp. of butter in the microwave, take pizza out of the pan and brush the crust with the melted butter. One of the Lou's girls told me to do this and it makes A HUGE difference in the taste of the crust I add a little xtra butter to the pan to keep it from sticking (besides more butter is always better LOL) . Oven temps and altitudes vary, but I always cook mine an extra 15 minutes longer than the package directions. I no longer have to order my beef & hot dogs long distance because we have two Portillo's in So. Cal. Note to Lou's.. since you grow your tomatoes here in CA for he sauce and you have so many transplants.. how about opening up a take out place in So Cal???... You'd make a killing as the pizza here really sucks. Rosati's opened some locations in Arizona and they are awesome!

About a 3.5: Tastes of Chicago is part of the Lou Malnati's pizza company; basically, you can ship a box full of Chicago goodies anywhere. So, those native Chicagoans who moved far from home and are needing a Chicago food fix, this can be an option. For pizzas, they only have Lou Malnati's available (I just wished that they had more options, like Home Run Inn or Giordano's, but then again, this is owned by L.M., so it's to be expected!); hot dogs (Vienna Beef; Portillo's); Italian Beef (Portillo's); Polish (Maxwell St.); steaks from Wildfire; BBQ from Real Urban BBQ; popcorn (Garrett's); pies (from Long Grove and Wildfire); and, candies (Fannie May). I thought the choices in each category was kind of interesting, because many can argue where in Chicago has the best pizza/deep dish, steaks, popcorn, etc. - it's all subjective. Specific cooking and storage/prep instructions are on the site, and there are different packages available where you can mix-and-match and do different combinations. The customer service is great, and it might not exactly taste like home, but it can be close enough! +Portillo's, Maxwell St, Garrett's +limited selection in terms of eateries

Love the pizza, hate the $8.99 shipping for a giftcard. Beware!

One of my good friends sent me a 17-pound Christmas gift package. All I was sent was the tracking information via UPS. When the package arrived, I saw the huge red, white, and black box with the text "Tastes of Chicago" printed across the front. The top of the box said "Please Refrigerate ASAP!" It was food (and a lot of it)! This friend knows I love a good Chicago hot dog and that's exactly what was inside the box -- a complete Vienna Beef Chicago hot dog kit! The kit, compactly packed in a white cardboard box, contained the following ingredients: - 10 poppy seed buns - 10 Vienna Beef frankfurters - 1 bottle Heinz yellow mustard - 1 mini container of Tone's celery salt - 1 vacuum-sealed package of sport peppers - 1 vacuum-sealed package of neon green Chicago relish I was actually excited upon opening the box. There was so much stuff inside. For those who don't know, Vienna Beef has been around since the late 19th century. Based in Chicago, they've produced hot dog sausages for over 120 years and are used in genuine Chicago-style hot dogs worldwide. As an example, in Atlanta (Sandy Springs), Mike's Hot Dogs on Roswell Rd. serves only Vienna Beef hot dogs. They are delicious. The food was frozen and shipped on dry ice. By the time I opened the package, the dry ice had evaporated. However, everything was still frozen or cool. I had to let the sport peppers and relish thaw before cutting open the packaging and unloading them into small bowls. The poppy seed buns were toasted in the toaster oven and the franks were boiled. Once assembled, the result was delicious Chicago hot dogs. I was very happy especially because I could load up on the unusually large and plump peppers (probably my favorite feature of a Chicago dog). Each pepper burst in my mouth with spicy juices. My mouth waters just thinking about it. But wait, there's more! Underneath the hot dog kit was more food: two circular 9-inch Chicago-style deep dish pizzas from Lou Malnati's Pizzeria. Lou Malnati is one of the most well known names in Chicago pizza. One of the pizzas was sausage and the other was pepperoni. Mamma mia. Each pizza was designed to feed two. The frozen pizzas went into the oven and turned out to be scrumptious. The crusts were thick and chewy and the tomato sauce and cheese were piled on in substantial amounts. These were truly deep dish pizzas. Each pizza had hearty layers of crust, meat, cheese, and tomato sauce. The pizzas were addicting and filling. They were so good, I had to stop myself from overeating. Each pizza was made from scratch and had specific cooking instructions on the packaging to ensure best taste. I never knew Tastes of Chicago existed until I received this gift. I think it is a fantastic gift idea because you can send authentic Chicago food anywhere in the U.S. Note they sell more than just pizzas and hot dogs. Check out their web site ( tastesofchicago.com ) to see all their offerings. Enjoy.

For those of us who don't live, get to go to, or miss Chicago style foods, the folks behind Lou Malnati's have teamed up with a number of vendors to bring those foods to your doorstep. A friend of mine had sent me a pizza/hot dogs combo a while back for my bday, and it was cool to get Lou Malnati's and Vienne Beef dogs enough for a month. Other vendors include: Portillo's Beef Eli's Cheesecakes Garret's Popcorn Carson's Ribs Hackney's Burgers Wildfire Steaks plus a number of other dessert vendors. You can basically mix and match whatever you want but they also provide some popular combos. Is it as good as fresh from the venor? No, but it's a good way to get the foods you just rarely see in places like NorCal here.

I am not one for sending gift baskets, or other food gifts as presents, for as the recipient of many of these types of things over the years, I have had my share of stale crackers, old chocolates and countless things that are inedible but look pretty in a basket. But recently, with a friend's birthday looming in front of me and with him being in Hawaii for an extended visit, I decided to send the gift of Chicago to him with some Lou Malnati's pizza, some Portillos hot dogs and beef with all the fixin's, and some Manny's corned beef. Call it a Chicago style luau, if you will!! You can order on line or on the phone. I called because knowing food goes packed in dry ice- I wanted to make sure it was going to be okay going all the way to Hawaii. The guy on the phone said "no problem" although there was an expected additional charge to get it there. Send it within the continental United States and all the posted prices already include shipping! They have plenty of pre arranged packages to choose from or you can go a la carte (the prices are better if you do it their way!) Prices begin around $50. And know if you want a card to go with it- the message is printed on the UPS label as they have no means to insert a card so you may want to send a text or something the day it is going to arrive so the recipient knows who sent it. So my order was placed and then the first email came in from UPS, letting me see exactly where my "care package" was and when it was going to be delivered. And even though the guy on the phone wasn't sure if it would make it's destination on the day I wanted (he had never sent to Hawaii before) it did and by mid day. The best part? Unlike flowers or other things you send out of state- I was actually heading to Hawaii to celebrate this birthday so I got to see how the food looked when it arrived AND got to taste it when we cooked it for the "Chicago style luau" a couple of nights later. The compact cooler was wrapped in a "Tastes of Chicago" box so it made a nice presentation. And all of the food tasted great with simple cooking instructions and pans already included to cook the pizzas in. Let me just say it was a hit with the locals and the Chicagoans alike. A far cry from the poke and other fish we had been eating all week!! Check our their website and you will see all your Chicago favorites in one place and ready to be shipped: Lou Malnati's, Portillos beef, Garrett's popcorn, Manny's, Eli's cheesecake, Carson's ribs, they are all there . . . . .and just ready to make someones day a whole lot better!!!

Oh how I miss the flavors of home. This website has partnered with many famous restaurants in Chicago like Lou Malnati's famous deep dish pizza and other windy city favorites such as Portillo's Italian Beef and hotdog's, Carson's Ribs, Manny's, Eli's Cheesecake, Lezza, and Garrett. So when I arrive in Chicago there are two thing's I must have asap, Lou Malnati's deep dish pie and Portillo's Italian Beef. No arguing, my family usually has it planned otherwise I get violent. For so many years we have craved this deliciousness from home. A couple of weeks ago I found their facebook page and immediately saw special offers. What? Heck yeah, all packages come with free shipping. Holy mother, this was like the holy gift from above. Many, many packages to choose from. Example, two pizza's, and some beef or maybe some Vienna hotdog's with beef etc.... Excellent choices, great for party's, ha ha OK seriously who am I kidding? Like I would share. I remember when my very good friend Carla L. brought some Lou's home on her last visit to Chicago. No way was she going to share with anyone. Can you blame her. If you have never had them this is just something you become obsessed with and just can not seem to share. So two weeks ago I see a special for four pizza's and a free Eli's peppermint Cheesecake if you order before 12-15. I placed my order and added not to ship until Dec.7 th..... Why you ask? Because my daughter is coming home from college and I wanted it here when she arrives so she can have a small taste of her Chicago favorite's. Also, let's be honest, I was very afraid if it arrived early she would not see any. They shipped it on the 7th and it arrived on the 8th at noon. Dry Ice kept it completely frozen. When hubby brought the box in I was so excited. Made room in the freezer, and yes well I could not help myself. Oven was turned on and we just had to dive into one. Foodgasm at it's very best. If I was to have expired after devouring it, I would have gone so happy, with this being my last meal. Open up a nice bottle of Zinfandel and you have one of my personal favorite meals in the world. So now that I know shipping is free, I will continue to keep ordering my heavenly delights from home. Oh life is good. The website is very user friendly, they send you emails with confirming your order, tracking number, awesome. Thank you, thank you, and thank you. You have made a girl very happy! Quit reading and order yours today.

I recently ordered two pizza pies from Lou Malnatis from this mail order service as a birthday gift. It is not cheap at $50 for two Chicago deep dish pies but it sure does say, "Hey, I care about you enough to buy you expensive pizza." I ordered on a Friday and the pies shipped Monday via UPS Ground and arrived mid-Wednesday packed with dry ice in a Styrofoam container. The recipient commented that he enjoyed the tomato sauce, which was not too acidic or sweet and was amused by the disc of sausage that covered the whole Sausage pie...MEN. The Spinach Pie was proclaimed just a cheese pie with a few sprinklings of spinach here and there. They also ship other Chicago food items like Portillo's Italian Beef sandwiches and cheesecake.
