I've only had one dish here so far and keep coming back for it because it's amazing. Order the Mexican breakfast, it's an egg/chorizo/onion scramble served with corn tortillas, rice and beans. A "make your own breakfast taco" kind of thing. Delicious. Four stars only because they need to start doubling the number of corn tortillas provided with the meal.

Delicious food. Large menu and adequate seating. You order first, then seat yourself, a good combo for quick efficient service. The order desk staff are friendly and helpful. The only thing holding this place back from 5 stars is the parking. Located in a strip mall, you have to wait until someone gives up a spot. Otherwise very happy with Once Upon...

I'm a big fan of all members of the "once upon a..." family. I wasn't quite sure how "once upon a grill" differed from Once upon a BAGEL and the friendly guy behind the counter mentioned they had Mexican food. When I pointed out that the Once upon a Bagel* in Winnetka also has (delicious) Mexican food he admitted they aren't all that different. During my most recent visit I tried that Mexican food, 2 chicken tacos to be exact. Delicious as always! The guys at once upon sure know how to make a good taco, quesadilla and (of course) a bagel. More crowded that I expected on a random Tuesday afternoon, which didn't make it as an ideal spot to get some work done as I would have hoped. And the senior citizen crowd reminded me fondly of my deli experiences back home in Boca Raton, FL. * yelp.com/biz/once-upon-a…

The BEST gluten free bagel I have ever tasted. Definitely going back for more. I would have given 5 stars, but the seating is just awful. There really has to be a better way to set the dining area up. The counter and table staff are very nice. You can see the confusion in delivering food as the dining room is too tight. Otherwise, delightful experience and can't wait to go back for the GF bagels! Update I found out they don't make the gluten free bagels. They are Udi's :(

Best kept secret in the northwest suburbs. A tiny storefront with a HUGE menu and an amazing array of choices. My new go-to place for a hearty, delicious (and inexpensive) meal!

I usually always base my ratings on the food....because that is ultimately what you are coming for. Everything else can be forgiven if the food is outstanding. People will wait in line for hours for something if it is good enough or at least if it's gotten enough hype. So to make my point, I gave Once Upon a 4 star rating in the past b/c of the food. It is very good, but not the best in the area in terms of breakfast or even lunch for that matter. But what is the best are the people and the prices. I come here at least 2-3 a week now, and they all know me. They are very friendly and willing to accommodate in any way possible, all the time. The prices too are amazing. Like I said, I'd rather eat breakfast at Georgie V's everyday, but my wallet and wife (my wifey wallet) would say no to that in a heartbeat. Let's face it, I can get an omelette at Gerogie's for 13 bucks, or from Once Upon during the "Early Bird" hours for less than $6.00. Again, less than 6 bucks for a huge 4-6 egg omelette stuffed w/ hashbrowns, bacon and American cheese and served with a bagel of your choice. You CANNOT BEAT IT unless you're making it at home yourself. Please, someone tell me of a better breakfast deal and I will tell you you're lying!!!! :)

This place is a true local treasure. I love the coffee in the morning - it's good. And all the egg dishes, especially the Mexican selections. Matzo Brei and corn beef hash are favorites too. I recommend this place

Love this place. They have another in downtown Highland park. Soup is as good as it gets - love the chx noodle. Grill cheese and chicken Fingers are awesome. Yes the deli and baked goods are great but you must try the cake donut. Yum!

Just moved into the area and love getting something for breakfast from here. It's a lot of food and the prices are reasonable. I wouldn't say it is fabulous but is down right good.

Had a Chinese Chicken Salad... Yum! Sweet Potato Fries, awesome! (Don't forget to ask for the seasoned salt with them) Inexpensive Jewish Deli. Yes, please!

This place has THE BEST soups! The split pea was outstanding!! They also have it frozen to take home. Go here. Eat soup!

First visit. Once upon a grille...they ate happily ever after. Or at least I did. Food was good, price was good, served quickly. Plus, they make breakfast all day. That by itself is pretty cool. I do feel like eggs in the afternoon sometimes....unfertilized. PS: parking in the plaza is a mess to say the least.

My office orders lunch from here regularly and I regularly eat way too much because it is just so damn good!! The highlights: tuna boat (tuna melt in a sub), lox plate, matzoh ball soup, cajun fries, sweet potato chips and, of course, smiley face cookies!!! Breakfast menu isn't bad either. No frills but consistently delicious food. How can you go wrong?

My family loves everything from their soup to their fried matzo. But our favorite night is Tuesday night....TACO TUESDAY! They have the awesome tacos!

    (4)
  • Laura C.

Staple lunch spot for me. I get salads here often. Very consistently good. I also really like their tacos -- Taco Tuesday you can get tacos for (I think) 50 cents each. The guys/gals that work over there are all super nice. Glad this spot is around!

  • Scott B.

Great eggsalads, chicken salad, whitefish salad, corned beef, pastrami, latkes, sweet potato fries, lox and skinny bagels. All excellent

Maybe it's me because I'm trying to figure out what's so great about this place to make it above average. I've been to Once Upon A Grille twice now and both times were fair. Yes, the staff was nice, friendly and helpful, but the food was just ok. Nothing I'd write home or rave about. Not a place I can say I'll be running back to anytime soon. A word of advice for those going to OUAG on a weekday during lunch - arrive around 11:30. It will make finding parking and a place to sit (if you choose to dine in) easier. If you get there any later be ready to wait.

  • Avon B.

Decent place and good concept as you order your food at the counter and it is brought to your table. The corned beef is solid but not the best around. Large menu with a number of options that will please just about anyone. The food is always consistent and good. The dining room is on the smaller side and there are plenty of yentas that will stare at you during your meal. Especially if you are a black man such as myself. Yet, that comes with the territory.

Great service, excellent bagels, soups, and pretzels. I try to go as often as I can.

  • Ronald V.

Very crowded and food quality was average. Line went out the door during lunch, but the order came quick after it was placed. For the price I would expect a bit more meat on the sandwich but at least they don't charge a lot for drinks. I ordered the corned beef sandwich and the beef was good and lean. What I don't understand is why a Deli is serving mexican food?

  • Gina G.

This is a great spot for breakfast or lunch. Many kosher favorites on the menu, which is extensive and full of many choices. The sandwich "boats" are for those who come with a bit appetite. All portions are large and service is fast.

    (3)
  • Caryn G.

Kreplach soup like gramma used to make. OMG. Ask for the kreplach on the side so you don't get shorted on the broth, an amazing hearty mixture of huge chunks of chicken, celery and carrot chunks. With a bialy on the side, this is a full, filling meal. Quick service, noisy, lots of newspapers lying around for you to read. If you want the place to yourself, go at around 3 in the afternoon.

    (4)
  • Lisa S.

Love the chicken soup. My husband gets mish-mosh, but I love just the broth with veggies. Whenever I get sick, I head there for as much as I can carry home. We used to love Ada's soup, but now that Ada's is gone this is the top! They also make a great tuna salad. Highly recommended!

  • Bruce N.

Always easy. Always quick. Very consistent. Fair prices an good deli fare. One of my favorite spots for a quick breakfast. A few early-bird omelet specials for $5.50 before 10AM. Bagels, eggs, sandwiches and good soups. Definitely no frills, but always a good bet for a fast bite.

  • Alan R.

We ordered a tray here for mother's day and it was yummy! The bagels were cut for us and arranged on the tray. The whitefish salad and egg salad were extremely good and the tuna was definitely above average. They are cheaper then many of the other north deli's. We will definitely order from here again. The service was also very friendly and attentive as they helped me carry stuff out to the car.

Everything about this place is great. We love coming with our family and enjoying a fun brunch. They had great matzah options during Passover too! Food is excellent and the staff is really friendly. Get there early, it fills up fast at rush times

I am sad to give this place only 3 stars... and the SOLE reason they get 3 stars is because they are GROSSLY OVER PRICED. The first time I came I had a turkey club which was really good BUT the sandwich and a pickle cost $9.50 !!! They don't even give you 2 layers of turkey. After getting over the price the sandwich was actually really good.. So much so I went back and sucked up the price one more time with the thought that I will have to absolutely crave this sandwich to ever pay that price again. Well today I said to myself, let me give them a try for a breakfast sandwich.. without knowing the price, I ordered a bacon egg and cheese on a toasted wheat bagel with butter over the phone. Much to my dismay, they charge $8.43 for it!!! My Gawd! I immediately expressed my shock at the price. I said to cashier they don't even charge those prices in NY/NJ .. hell even in Chicago they don't charge that much. you shouldn't have to pay more Than $4.50 for a breakfast sandwich. I was baffled! I mean it's not like this place is organic/non gmo... They get a ton of business so I'm not sure why there is such gouge in the pricing. But then again in business you charge the highest price consumers will tolerate. well...long story short ... this customer no longer can tolerate such ridiculous prices.. I mean the food is good but not that good... I unfortunately will take my business elsewhere...

One of the best corned beef sandwiches in the area. I love it. Excellent breakfast, excellent soups. Try the lentil and the wild rice. I pretty much love everything I've ever had here but the corned beef is the king for me. Two sizes and a good value too. Get's very busy so be prepared to wait during lunch time hours.

Now that was a delicious Reuben moist and meaty perfect balance of all the traditional components and grilled to crispy perfection, good (but small crispy dill pickle too ! Tomorrow taco tuesday! It can be a little hard to get in and out off the strip mall parking but at 3:00 no waiting. I really wanted to try the corned beef hash but just Easter for ao-go order t get a sanwitch. . Next time.

  • Matt A.

Food is pretty good but God dam 8 bucks for a breakfast sandwich. These guys are worse than the fat cats on wall street. Highway robbery!!! I can go to upper crust bagels across the street and get the same sandwich for 5 bucks. But I guess I don't get to see the Northbrook senior citizen group then. Geez...

Decent diner type place in the burbs for breakfast and lunch. Kid friendly with great options for the entire family (from bagels and cream cheese to waffles and pancakes to hotdogs with french friends). There is a waitstaff walking around, cleaning up and helping, however, you order at the register, pay and then go sit down. The egg white breakfast wrap was good-healthy option. Kids had pancake and a hotdog with curly fries (yum). Great place to grab a quick lunch with friends and kids together. Something for everyone.

  • Matt W.

Great eats for taco Tuesday! I get steak with onions and cilantro, they use corn tortillas (which I like) and have decent salsa. Only issue is their rice and beans are a little weak but great outside of that.

  • Jules H.

Solid deli-taco joint-breakfast diner! Huge menu, all the basics done quite good! I had corned beef on rye and a potato pancake. Many fellow diners were enjoying soup, and the lady who cut in front of me had her favorite egg dish. Order at the counter, find a seat, and food starts to appear. Nice service, they always have newspapers around for reading while you eat. Because of the reading, the eating, and the service I'll for sure be back :-)

Great place. Love the variety of food they have. Bagels, deli sandwiches, they got it all. Great concept with the cafeteria style as well. A Northbrook staple for sure that always serves up good meals!

A family favorite. A town favorite. A city favorite. This place is classic and great! Amazing "deli" atmosphere. Breakfast, lunch, or dinner OUAG is perfect!

You wont get the same price twice there. People at the register that don't have a clue. Won't be going back anytime soon!

  • Chris K.

This place is really a 4.5 stars. But that's splitting hairs. The deals are awesome and the breakfast was great. My wife and I ate here for less than $13 and the portions were amazing. The atmosphere is a bit cramped and outdated for a restaurant. But, the place isn't trying to be an upscale breakfast house. They had one of the best omelets I have eaten in a long time. Don't miss out on the specials - they are a great deal. Have not had dinner here, but would and I will be coming back.

  • Rob B.

I love the steak tacos. They get really busy but if you call ahead you can get out of there in about 10min. They need to figure out how to keep the line moving better around lunch time. Jumbo pretzels are great too

I have to point out that I absolutely love Once Upon a Bagel in Highland Park and when I used to work in that area, that was my go to place at least once a week because I loved all the noshes and their bagels and soup, oh my. I was in the area and decided to stop by here to pick up some food to go and I kinda regret that I did. The place was packed, a line almost out the door. I didn't want to sit inside so I just did an order to go. I asked if I can have a whole wheat bagel toasted and sliced and a half a pound of salmon salad to go. The guy looked at me funny like "this is a grill, who orders salmon salad." Well, I do. I mean I always did at Once upon a bagel and it was beyond fresh and consistently delicious. Anyways, he placed my order and it came to a little more pricey than it is in the Highland park location for some reason. Then when I came home, I finally tried it. The bagel as good, similar to the ones from Once Upon in HP, but the salmon salad just did not do it for me. First of all, my half a pound was closer to a quarter of a pound because it's supposed to be filled to the top of the container and mine was like 75% filled, which was a little disappointing. The salad itself just didn't taste fresh. Like it sat out for a couple of days in case a strange woman out would order it. Well, I know to not get it again. It has that busy deli feel but the quality of what I ordered in particular just didn't do it for me. Maybe I should have gotten the pastrami sandwich or a matza ball soup to try, but I feel like if it's owned by the same owners, they should all be equally amazing. Sorry Once Upon, I'm sticking to your bagel joint and that's it. Maybe and if you're lucky I'll venture out the the once upon a deli for some fresh tuna or salmon since it's on the same plaza as you guys!

What can you say. As iconic on the North Shore as Michael's or anything else, this is the premier place for bagels, cream cheese, lox, soup, and every other nosh you might crave... If you've never had one, try a corn beef boat, their specialty bread the make for just this sandwich is unbeatable. All the tacos and Mexican food are also all surprisingly good..

  • Colin S.

I always enjoyed coming here except the spotty service finally got to me . You can come in sometimes and receive great food and service . Other times you get bad food and service. Just recently I ordered delivery. It took over an hour and when I received the food it was obvious that it had sat a long time under a heating lamp. I called and complained that my tortilla chips were so soggy that they were just one big clump. There response was not were sorry that it sat to long or sorry you didn't like your terribly prepared breakfast. They said that's how we make it. I will never go back again.

Went here today for the first time. Chicken noodle soup was good but they were stingy with the noodles. Turkey sandwich was nothing special. Tomatoes and onions tasted less than fresh. Probably will go back and try an omelette the reviews rave about.

Plus: 1. Really good bagel breakfast sandwich 2. Great bagels Minus: 1. Guacamole and chips straight from Costco. 2. Mediocre tacos....not worth the discount

My husband had noticed this on one of our drives down Dundee. Our tastes are different so we love finding places that have a large menu. We were pleasantly surprised when we stepped inside - first of all it was really busy and second of all they had a little bit of everything on the menu. I had the rancheros heurvas (sp?) and my husband had a Reuben (see what I mean by different tastes?). We both enjoyed our meals. My eggs were perfectly cooked and my husband raved over his Reuben. Portions were good - not too much to need a to go box but not to little that we were still hungry. Service was fast and efficient and very nice. I think after a year of living in Northbrook we have found our go to dinner spot for quick easy dining.

Should really have been 3 due to burnt hash browns, but I can't help but dig this place. Maybe it was the super friendly staff or the 80s jams, but I'm a fan.

I eat out a lot, and this is my favorite local restaurant. Everything is fresh, plentiful, and cheerfully served. Love the chorizo omelette for breakfast, though everything is excellent. Once Upon a Grill also offers a phenomenal turkey burger - best I've ever had, though I rarely see anyone order it. Sandwiches are great, as are the Mexican offerings. Grilled salami is heavenly - a must order. Some of the best and friendliest service on the North Shore. Love this place.

I wondered why this place didn't get too many reviews, but I noticed when I ate lunch there today that the crowd is either very old or very young and it's very busy during the lunch hour on a Saturday. It's a very small place with about 15-20 tables close together located in a strip mall where finding a place to park is not easy, but difficult to maneuver around. It's pretty loud in there with loads of kids, parents and grandparents. Hubby had the matzo ball soup with lots of garden vegetables and I had the beef barley soup which I loved with lots of veggies and chunks of brisket. They serve the soup with your choice of bagels which I didn't eat because we shared a super Reuben sandwich that was super duper good! I love how they slice the corned beef super thin. I also like that you can fill your own drinks and refills as well as coffee and tea. I didn't give it a 5 star rating only because of the tight fit between tables and you can hear everyone's conversation and the parking lot was difficult to maneuver.

All I can really say is wow. On a cold day in Chicago, a warm sandwich like once upon a grill offers really hits the spot. It was -6 Fahrenheit yesterday and me and my buddy were looking for a place to grub down. My friend suggested once upon a grill; some bagel/sandwich place I never tried before in my life. I was skeptical of the idea at first but nothing else was open or in close distance so I agreed. We ran to the door as we got out of the car due to the freezing temperature and we got in line. Only a few other people were there on that cold Monday afternoon. My friend ordered a tuna sandwich which he must have tried before since he was already accustomed to this place. Me, not knowing what to pick, I asked what the employee behind the counter recommended and he said the Philly cheese steak. I wasn't in the mood for steak so I ordered the salami sandwich boat. It came after a short ten minutes. My first bite into that warm salami sandwich with mixer all cheese melted on top with a pickle on the side was heaven. I Am definitely going to come back to this place. Just wow.

La-la-LOVE this place! I have worked in Northbrook for 5 years and have yet to try this place until today. I have been missing out! The staff is incredibly friendly. I went at the peak of the lunch hour for a carry-out order and I was in an out within 10 minutes. I got the BLT.. i know, simple order, but some places still manage to screw it up. Not Once Upon A Grill... The bacon was perfect, and the sandwich was DEVOURED! I got a smiley face cookie too to brighten up a cold winter day. I will be coming back here again!

Three words - CORNED BEEF HASH. OK, I like the canned corned beef hash on occasion with my eggs for breakfast. It's not healthy and even a little unappealing. When I order it and encounter a place that makes their own CBH, I'm usually disappointed. It's usually no good. Gimme the canned stuff! Enter Once Upon a Grille's Corned Beef Hash - to die for. And I never thought I'd say those words about CBH in my lifetime. But this stuff is freshly made and has tons of flavor. Nothing like the canned stuff that I love - much better! Their omelette's are great as well - can be tough to find a spot to sit during peak hours. It's an "order at the front and they bring the food to your table" kind of place. Nice spot for breakfast, lunch and Corned Beef Hash!

  • Derek C.

yikes, $7+ for a corned beef sandwich! it was a decent sandwich, but WAY overpriced! I also ordered wings with my sandwich since it was wing Wed, and it ended up taking just over 15 min for my food to come out. so I just sat there and watched everyone behind me get their food before I did... not a good feeling when you are starving!

I work very close to this place and I've lost track of how many times I've been inside. There used to be a time when I picked up breakfast from here 4-5 times a week. I try to eat low carb, so I've only had a pretty limited selection from their large menu, but what I've had they do pretty well. First of all, the prices are very reasonable and the portions are mostly huge. Very cheap ($6-10) giant omelets until 10am (the Spanish omelet is great) and large and pretty good portions when you order salads and breakfast dishes. Their specials are also good. Tuesday is Taco Tuesday where you can get cheap tacos with regular taco meats, but also salami (my favorite), corned beef, pastrami, etc... People I work with really like their chicken tacos. They also do very cheap wings every Wednesday, which are really pretty good, meaty, slightly crispy wings. They get really packed during lunch sometimes, but they're always prompt bringing the food out and the turnover is usually high enough that it's not a problem finding a seat a few minutes after you come in. This place isn't amazing, but after dozens of visits, it's been close to 100% consistently good with friendly, fast service, large menu and very decent prices. This is definitely my standby for breakfast and lunch in the area.

  • Audrey S.

This is a great place for lunch and I highly recommend it. Every week they have "Taco Tuesdays" and you can get chicken, beef or steak. They're all made to order and have the regular stuff - lettuce, tomato and cheese on a soft tortilla. 4 is too many, but 3 makes for a great size lunch. Besides tacos, they also carry "grilled boats", breakfast food, bagels, pretzels, soups, salads, sandwiches, and desserts. I had an egg white egg salad sandwich, toasted with lettuce and tomato. It's served with a pickle. They also have the best sweet potato chips I've ever had. Of course, I'm not sure that means too much as I've never had sweet potato chips, just the fries version, which I'm obsessed with. Lunchtime is a zoo, so go either before or after and you'll be able to order and sit down relatively fast. Two thumbs up!

I really wish they would open this deli downtown because I love it! I can't go home to the burbs without stopping here for a bite to eat! I love their toasted sesame dressing - used to have it in my sorority and it was my fav and couldn't find it anywhere else until here. I love Once Upon a Grille...yum!
