My boyfriend and I went here on a whim in search of drinks and food. It was salsa night I believe given the salsa dancing couple in the middle of the room. Anyway the bartenders waited on us and they were amazing! So the service for me was awesome. The food was even better, I had the chile rellenos and they were the best I've had. So the food, service, and atmosphere was great. I just feel like we came here on a good night but I will try it again sometime. P.S...Pina Colada's were not the best :(

Ay, Carumba! This place is bad for dinner! We went on a Friday night at 7:30 and WE WERE THE ONLY DINERS THERE ALL EVENING ! T.hat should tell you something...Despite that, drink service was slow, with no water being served until we asked. Their pitchers of Margaritas were very weak...maybe they were saving the tequila for the dance customers later. I agree with the other reviewers- stay away from the steak! . My friend liked her red snapper, and the guacamole was decent, so maybe the rest of us just ordered the wrong things.(ie, typical Mexican food!) As we left at 10:30, the owner of the pool hall next door told us he was nice not to tow us, since we parked in front if his business. There was no sign, and it's a strip mall! . I guess you could say the perfect ending to a depressing evening!

Wow. What a disaster this place is and it's clear that without the live music and other entertainment driven events this place hosts, it would almost certainly be out of business. If a rating of zero was an option on Yelp, this place would more than fit the bill. We came on Wednesday night which happened to be "big band' night. The live 17 piece band was excellent, too bad the food was putrid and the service completely lacking. They offer a $12 dinner menu on these nights and you get to choose a soup or salad, one appetizer and one entree for this price. We ordered the guacamole and calamari for appetizers and the carne asada and chiles rellenos for entrees. We also had the "Mango Salad' and chicken soup. Here's the skinny: Chicken soup: salty, dirty tasting and mangled pieces of chicken. "Mango Salad": lots of finely chopped iceberg, a few pieces of tomato and a lonely, dry piece of mango. Not good. Guacamole: looked grey with tints of green with little flavor of avocado. There seemed to be a lot of mayo and salt in there... Calamari: super chewy, fishy tasting and very oily. Carne Asada: poor quality skirt steak that was excessively salty and cooked to leather like quality despite being requested medium. Chiles Rellenos: one single chile for the entire entree. It was liquefied and looked like someone had stepped on it. Service: When taking our order, our waitress criticized us for ordering out of sequence. We initially asked for our entrees, appetizers and soup/salad. Our waitress informed us that we had to start over because we ordered "backwards." No water was provided until well into our dinner despite multiple requests. We requested our check and it took over 15 minutes to get it...an eternity as we could not get out of there fast enough. Avoid this place.

Been to this place numerous times. Music is not so great, they have bad reviews for a reason. If i could give a 0 star they would receive it. The owner is a gigantic b i t c h. When confronted about her POS business in a cordial manner she starts to act very unprofessionally and threatens to call the police instead of putting the customers first. This place is very discriminatory. The staff at the night club are rude and unprofessional. I do NOT recommend this place, if youre looking for good music and night life go elsewhere! Trust me these ppl do not give a damn about customers first they just want your money because they obviously desperately need it to maintain their doors open. I refuse to ever go back and give them a dime. They need to get closed because any place that cant accept fault for their lack of good service is a dump! Unless they switch owner and get a completely new staff this wont stay open long. I hope the owner(s) read this and crinch in their seats.

Ok - We've been here several times over the last few years(never great but for the opening month) but today was an all time low. Thought it would be good on Cinco de Mayo - service was slow 60 minutes to get food and not all at once. Was never asked for a second round of drinks. Waitress never asked us how our food was, but she was the ONLY server in the place of 5/5??? Place was filled with older people who came to dance for the Big Band music (how weird is it to have old swing dancers while you are trying to enjoy a margarita). Food is becoming more and more bland!! I've tasted better fast food Mexican. Waitress told us she was charging us for more chips - one basket for 5 adults????? I will not go again. We suggested this place as it is also on American Airlines dining miles. I'd rather go to Taco Bell. I wish they would have stuck with being the Sphinx and the Mediterranean food as that was really good.

Really, a terrible place. Service, food, etc - all bad. As soon as our server saw the restaurant.com coupon, which we had used as incentive to try the place, her mood changed. No free chip refills, no checking on how the food was, checking on other tables while walking by ours, etc. We had 7 people including 2 children - 2 of the orders were completely wrong, even though she wrote them down and repeated them to us. We also saw the waitress talking on her cell phone and eating cheetos behind the bar. Shortly after, she was filling a to-go bag of tortilla chips for someone using her bare hands. Really gross place. She brought our food out immediately after her cheetos snack. Foodwise - everyone hated what they ate. I got the chimichanga which was burnt dark brown and the steak tasted like a microwave burrito filling. My son's hamburger was so greasy there was a puddle on the plate. He ate none of it. I rarely hope that places go out of business, but this restaurant has to go.

This is funny. I believe we came here the same night as the initial reviewer. Sorry if my review sounds redundant. The place was pretty empty, but the music was bumping. Came here with sister and cousin, and we split the chicken nachos. Was pretty disappointed with the nachos. It was a decent sized plate, but the chicken was a little dry, the guac didn't taste fresh, and the refried beans weren't smashed to a smooth consistency Had a margarita, and it wasn't good at all. Barely tasted like mango, more like straight rubbing alcohol. Gross The staff here was very nice. But i wish i could base it on the food, as Sarah M had

I went here with my family and friends and had a horrible experience. My order was really easy too. I got the chile rellenos and a mango smoothie. After getting my food I asked when will I get my smoothie. The waitress said it was coming right up. 10 mins later and nothing. When she came back to refill my water I asked a 2nd time and she apologized and said she will get it right away. Another 10 mins pass and this time my food was already done. As she was collecting my plates I was clearly frustrated and told her I never got my smoothie. She then said "Oh we ran out of mangoes" Now how can you call your restaurant Mango and then run out of mangoes? Its like walking into a KFC and the employee saying they ran out of chicken. She asked if I would like something else so I ended up going with a strawberry smoothie. I would not recommend this place to anyone and just from reading other reviewers negative experiences this place should be shut down.

This place in now open in place of a former night club (night lounge) called Sphynx. This place didn't really set itself apart from your average Mexican joint I have been to. Very good and great service. Server was attentive and polite. I had a restaurant.com giftcard and he broke it down on the bill, showing the 18% gratuity and I thought that was good of him to do, since the other restaurant I had a certificate to did not do this. Food was delicious, had the pollo en crema de chipotle or something and it was AWESOME. Huge portions, will definitely go back again!

Drinks were watered down with too much ice, tasteless. Food was overpriced, small amounts, I had the salmon-- the fillet had several bones, some very large: WHO cooks this way? Not a real good flavor, was supposed to be garlic, came out with sweet and sour syrup sauce. The "salad" had some dry iceberg lettuce, a couple pieces of tomato two pieces of red pepper and one thin slice of avocado... no dressing-- tasteless. I wound up paying 40.00 with a 25.00 coupon!!! Next time I want Mexican, I'll happily go to Taco Burrito King!!

I had to give a shout out to this place due to the live music alone. My boyfriend and I had a craving for Mexican and were actually heading down Milwaukee to go to Los Comales down the street but figured to give this place a try instead... I'm glad we did. This used to be Sphinx Cafe and the decor and the set up is very similar to how it used to be. It's nothing fancy, just basic tables and chairs... Some murals on the wall illuminated by blacklight. It's definitely not the place for ambiance. The bar is much nicer than I remember. Apparently, every Thursday starting today, the Sidemen Big Band plays live jazz. This was a very pleasant surprise considering that there aren't many places like this in the Niles area. The service was slow as our server was also the host and bartender making our drinks. We caught a glimpse of the owner who really didn't take initiative to manage the service. That would be my only complaint, but everything else more than made up for it for me to give this place 5 stars. Though we waited quite a while, the food came out fresh and was delicious. The bill for the two of us was under $30 and we got an appetizer, entree, and drinks. We were very impressed and will be sure to come back here on Thursdays!

We went there for dinner the day before Christmas Eve. We had a gift certificate from Restaurant.com and decided to use it here based on a whim. Since we have small children, we rarely get to go out, but we had family in town to look after our kids. So we were pretty excited to get out. It was not a good experiance and we would not go back. They had a live band that was playing Christmas Music. There were only three other tables besides ours that had patrons. I am guessing that all of the patrons were between 50 and 70. The waitress took our order and never returned to see if we would like another Margarita, refill the water, or inquire on the meal. According to the terms of the Restaurant.com , we had to purchase another $15 not including drinks. Our bill was like forty cents under and the waitress indicated that they could not honor the gift certificate. We requested that she just add the difference to the bill and we would pay it. She informed us that we had to order something else from the menu. So we ordered the dessert and had to wait and wait and wait for it to arrive. Then we had to wait and wait and wait for her to bring the bill. We were a little aggravated, because we had already purchased tickets to the theater and were running late because of the waitress. She ended up charging us $10 over the bill. The descriptions of the items on the bill did not match what we ordered, there were 3-4 coffee items listed. To add additional insult, the waitress received 18-20% gratuity for the poor service and indirectly making us late. If we were not running late and if it had not been the holiday season, we would have stuck around and try to resolve the matter. I am sure the waitresss is a nice person. The food was nothing special. The drinks were average. If you look up at the ceiling, you will see 2x4 trusses that were painted black. Felt kinda like we were dining in a decorated shed. The band was good. There are better mexican restaurants in the area, in my opionion.

Service was competent and friendly. Below average food except for the gratis warm chips and salsa served before the meal. Went there recently on Saturday. I phoned first. When entered woman taking your money, $15 per person, to enter. I asked her are they playing Salsa and Bachata. She said yes. What a shock when you go in. They have changed the inside and now some metal chairs and some table with dance floor. NO CHAIRS AVAILABLE TO SIT ON AFTER PAYING $30 for 2 people. NO PLACE TO STAND EXCEPT IN FRONT OF OTHERS CHAIRS which people don't like. NO ONE TO GET YOU A DRINK for the whole time there. Did not see any waiter or waitress. NO BACHATA PLAYED. NO SALSA PLAYED. VERY BAD SOUND SYSTEM WITH MUFFLES SOUNDS. It will give you a headache. A woman with heavy makeup was in the middle of the dance floor was trying to sing with karoke style Mexican country music background but she was off key and she must not have know how she sounded. Then came more overloud distorted Mexican Ranchero music. Finally a mambo style Salsa. Dance floor slippery with strange surface. What to do? Only one thing. Quietly leave. Disappointed. 45 minutes for $30. Wasted money and time.

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.
Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.
Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
