It's about time Naperville got itself a Vietnamese pho restaurant! The pho tai ($9 beef noodles w/ sliced beef) was to die for. The broth was what did it for me, super rich & flavorful. The portion size was generous and the plating presentation was delicate. We also ordered the spring rolls but those were pretty average. The weather happened to be perfect so we were lucky to be able to snag some outdoor seating on the patio. Only wish I had known it's byob, though be advised there is a corkage fee.

I'm half Vietnamese and this was super authentic, delicious, and great value! Im definitely recommend dining at this hidden gem. It's a bit tucked away but so worth it. I got bun thit nuong cha goa. (vermacelli bowl) and the chicken wings for an appetizer. So good!! Portions are good sized and good value. Service is good but a bit slow. They are nice though.

Green beef curry is delish! So is the fried rice. So flavorful. Best thing they have - everything!

I want to give this place a higher rating but I just can't. I come to Naperville on business often and always looking for an ethnic flare instead of the chain restaurants near my hotel. This place is cute. Located downtown, the area is nice with many stores in walking distance. The service was good and the decor was above average for a Viet place. I ordered the spring rolls which at 4.50 were very very tasty. The wrappers were tight and cheery and full of shrimp and meat. The peanut sauce was a little bland but I enjoyed the fact that it is served warm. You can add aittle of the the hoisin sauce for more flavor. Instead of getting pho, which I heard was bland, I got the bun bo hue. Spicy beef noodle soup. This is a delicacy in many parts of this country as a good bowl is hard to come by. The bowl was big but mostly full of broth. The noodles to broth ratio was odds Very little noodle and meat to lots of broth. That won't be such a bad thing except the broth was bland. It lacks the essence of bun Bo hue, the lemongrass and shrimp paste flavor. The meat was tensor but small bits and hey we're missing the quintessential herb, rau ram, which is required for this dish. Overall the the western palate, this place will suffice. For the Asian and ethnically inclined, I say get the rice dishes because the soups are lacking in my book.

This place was relatively good. My husband and I went for lunch and we both ordered the pork with vermacelli noodles which was delicious, and we shared sticky chicken wings, which tasted a little old. Overall nice environment, and the service was efficient.

The Vietnamese food here rivals and in some cases surpasses Argyle. There I've said it. Coming from the busy, bustling, city, hectic, fend-for-yourself lifestyle of Viet-town Chicago, it was strange to see calm, open seating in a small clean Vietnamese restaurant in downtown Naperville. While the change of pace is nice, the main reason I constantly return is because of the fantastic food. I usually start off with a Vietnamese Coffee, which is both strong in coffee and strong in condense milk, providing a huge kick start to the meal. It's delicious, but sometimes a little too sweet for me (but the ice and addition of a bit of water helps). I have tried to sample a bit of everything on the menu, here's my favorites. Appetizers - While traditionally people usually go to the Goi Cuan (rice paper spring rolls), I usually go with the Cha Gio (fried variety). While the Goi Cuan is not bad, it really doesn't stand out from the other Vietnamese experiences I've had. However, the Cha Gio really seems to outshine the Goi Cuan. The crispy of the skin combined with savory shrimp inside all wrapped in a lettuce/pickled veggies dipped in a fantastically tangy fish sauce really makes me savor at the thought of it. The fried spring rolls come pipping hot, and really get the meal started off right. Noodles - I love pho, but I'm not a huge fan of pho here. Once again, not because the pho is bad, it's more because the pho is slightly average comparably to Viet-town. However, the Bun Bo Hue (spicy beef soup) is really special. The many different varieties of meat soak in the spicy broth as they bring out a plate of special veggies that really provide it a nice crunch. The broth is different and delicious, while the noodles also have a different texture from pho. The noodles in this dish are slightly thicker and a bit chewier. The beef shank usually is really flavorful and slightly fatty (almost melts in your mouth). After having this once, I never went back to the pho. Rice Vermicelli - I haven't tried too many of the rice vermicelli dishes, but I did try the Bun Thit Nuong Cha Gio (pork chop vermicelli). The pork chop was tender and flavorful, seasoned nicely to compliment the star of the dish, fish sauce. The fish sauce carries the rest of the dish to glory as it ties in the vermicelli, the pork, the pickled veggies, and peanuts. While I don't order it often, it's definitely a treat when I do. Star of the show - Bahn Xeo So the main reason I come to Green Basil is the fantastic Bahn Xeo (Vietnamese pancake). It is seriously the best I've had anywhere. The batter is cooked to a beautiful crisp to perfectly compliment lettuce and pickled veggies. There is a generous in the pork and shrimp pieces inside the pancake, and the house fish sauce really gives it that great tangy balance. This is by far my favorite dish. Overall, the experience isn't flawless, but it has quickly become a regular weekend lunch spot for me. The service can be hit or miss, the classic food selections (pho, Goi Cuan) can turn out average. But if you explore a bit into the menu, you can really stumble upon a memorable experience that you will want to revisit time and time again.

The pho here definitely doesn't compare with the ones you'll get in Little Saigon In California, but it does the trick. The soup here is light yet flavorful and the meat tender. The bowl is quite large, but for the price I still think it's a little over priced. The portion of meat to noodle is definitely not right. There needs to be more meat for a $10 of noodle. The piece here is actually a little overpriced. If you get an appetizer and a bowl of pho; it will run you about $20. One of the main reason I come here is the Ban Xia. It's a batter crepe with bean sprouts, shrimp and pork fried in a pan until they're super crispy. You eat it in a lettuce wrap and dip it in fish sauce. So fatty yet so good. I definitely would come here again to satisfy my craving since there's no other choices in the burb to her pho's like the one in California. Tip: close between 3 and 5.

I do not usually order pho at a restaurant, I prefer homemade pho. However, I was still hangover from the night before and my friends kept telling me "pho is the best cure for hangover". One of the cleanest pho restaurant I have seen so far in Chicago. I got pho dac biet and the broth was really flavorful. For the smoothies, they actually use real fruits instead of powders. The spring rolls were ok, nothing too special.

What a pleasant surprise! I typically frequent Argyle so I arrived without expectations. Four of us came dined in on a Sunday afternoon and we shared an order of cha gio, bun thit nuong, banh xeo, and bun bo hue. In English terms, the cha gio is a plate with four pieces of egg rolls with shrimp, water chestnut, carrot, and glass noodle. There is a side of fish sauce for dipping. Each bite was welcomed with a crisp and the ingredients were very refreshing. The bun thit nuong is rice vermicelli with pork tenderloin, lettuce, bean sprout, mint, roasted peanuts and fish sauce. Whenever I order vermicelli at other places, they are usually too dry. Green Basil does it just right with very juicy and well-grilled tenderloin. It is served cold so I would highly suggest having this on a summer day. The bun bo hue is much more winter-friendly because it is a bowl of traditional spicy beef noodles soup with pork shank and pork pate. It is mildly spicy without killing too many of your tastes buds. I could easily have this whole bowl to myself without sharing. But the star of the afternoon would definitely go to the banh xeo which is Vietnamese crepes with crispy rice, shrimp, pork, bean sprouts, mint leaves, basil, and lime fish sauce. It takes a bit longer to prepare but your time will be well-spent. The portion is huge and the batter is perfect. Just listen to the slight cracking sound as you cut into the crepe. You won't find that elsewhere! This is a rarity that I will make an effort to revisit!

Slightly hidden...find Quigley's Irish Pub, enter Green Basil on the east side of the building. Wife & I loved the Spring Rolls and Sticky Wings. Great staff, attentive and very knowledgable. BYOB with only a $5 corkage fee. Great restaurant to kill an hour while we picked up family at the Naperville Train Station inbound on Amtrak. They do a brisk carry out business...
(5)Mike K.
I have to say it that I have never been treated as rude as I was today. We had a good lunch but when it came time to pay they didn't have change. Our bill was $30.00 and u have them $100. She said she had no change... What. You've been open with full house for 2 hours.. No change? Then she threw the bill at us Lesson here is that if you are a small business owner you never know who the customer is. So this nationally food critic now has something to write about Horrid service if you go order the egg rolls And bring small change as they seem to be struggling to make enough money to make change
(2)Jill M.
Best Vietminisne restaurant! Everything on the menu is great! The crispy wings are to die for, my fav for sure! You are missing out if you don't try this place out!
(5)Jen K.
I really wanted to like this place. A lot. It's a cute, off the beaten path Thai restaurant that has more charm than pretty much everything else in downtown Naperville. It's basically in a living room and offers up something different in terms of ambiance and food. How could you go wrong? I can't really put my finger on it. The service was ok. The food was ok. The wait was ok. Everything was just...ok. The Goi Cuon was a good start (spring roll with shrimp and pork), followed by Green Basil Com Chien (their fried rice with shrimp, chicken, pork, pineapple, lot of veggies) and Ca Ri Ga (yellow curry chicken). I liked it all. Maybe I just needed to order something new and different. These are standard things that we tend to order when we go out for asian food. So I don't know. The service was definitely on the slow side, even though everyone was nice. I just don't think I'll be back. I can order these similar items at a Chinese take out and get the same effect.

This place is truly amazing. I'm from San Jose, California. I know my Vietnamese food and I can tell you that this place is the best you can find in the area. I don't know if this can beat the ones in the city, but it's definitely the best of the burbs. The sticky wings are to die for and one of the best wings I've ever had. The fried egg rolls are always hot, fresh, crispy and delicious. The pho broth is rich and the noodles are never over-cooked and the meats are always tender and amazing. In my experience, Vietnamese places aren't very strong in the decoration sector but Green Basil is an exception. The place looks like a home from the inside out and is so warming, which is a bonus. Overall, if you want a nice place in Downtown Naperville to have some great Vietnamese food, this place should be, without a doubt, your go-to (and mine).
(5)Kimberly B.
The pho was absolutely delicious and served perfectly! Everything on the menu was priced reasonably and was authentic. The take out is very convenient as well, and tastes just as good as eating in!

Honestly I go back and forth when it comes to rating this place. Sometimes the service is outright horrendous, yet other times (or more so recently) it hasn't been to bad. If there is a constant though, I would have to say that the food (and more specifically the pho) is always good. The thing that separates this place from those in this neck of the wood comes down to the broth of their pho. I always find something off at most of the establishments in the Naperville/Plainfield area. Time after time, my wife and I find ourselves returning to this place to get our pho fix. True, the service is sometimes slow and at times a point of aggravation (especially when I have to constantly ask for refills of water) but it has gotten a lot better since they have hired some more help. I think it has more to do with school being in session nearby at the college, but I won't complain. The place is clean and the ambiance is relaxing, so that helps when it comes to enjoying my piping, hot bowl of pho. Let me slurp in relative silence.

It's a rarity to find good suburban Vietnamese, but Green Basil nails it. The boyfriend and I visit often (though admittedly we get take out) and our food is always fresh and delicious. The restaurant itself is adorable, and set back slightly from the main bustle of Naperthrill. While the interior would seem small, each table offers up enough privacy so that you aren't sitting on your neighbors laps. While I'm not normally a proponent of tofu, I have nothing but rave reviews about the tau hu xao. It isn't soggy (which is my chief complaint about tofu dishes) and the way the flavors meld together is divine. The bahn mi's are nothing short of fantastic (especially the pork belly, can't get enough of it) and have just enough spice and sweet to please the palate. My only slight bit of disappointment was that the sticky wings were on the dry side, but the sauce itself was great. As far as pho goes, we have tried almost all of them and you really can't go wrong. They also do not skimp on all the fixings that come with (bean sprouts, basil, etc) even when pho is ordered for takeout. Will definitely be here again. ...And again.
(4)Rebecca H.
Went today for lunch and had none of the service problems some others are noting - we had lovely service from a nice college-aged guy and a fantastic and reasonably priced meal of spring rolls and pho. The broth in the pho was perfection and the meat (in 304, beef and brisket ) tasty. The pho menu is small, I wish they had duck and a seafood option, but we were very happy overall.

Never have I had Vietnamese food before - but let me tell you - it's good. Really good. Tucked away in downtown Naperville, I came to Green Basil with a friend and a bottle of wine (BYOB). Our server was super nice, but a little awkward, in terms of explaining the menu and coming up to ask if we needed anything... But that's totally cool. Made for plenty of conversation starters :) We got the Bo Luc Lac and Tom Ram Man - amazing dishes with steak and shrimp, respectively. Incredible value and amount of food for the price ($8-13/dish). Everything that they brought out of the kitchen looked AMAZE so I will definitely be back to try 10 more menu items. Highly recommend!!

Good food and pretty authentic from what I'm told. Enjoyed dinner here with a friend and his son - my godson, who about a year and a half ago returned from several months of teaching English in Vietnam. He said everything we ordered was right on course. OK - bear with me as I can't recall the actual Vietnamese names of what I enjoyed, but I'll tell you I ordered a 101 and a 403. The 101 is essentially your standard spring roll thing with a pretty decent peanut sauce. The 403 was Vietnamese Fried Rice and was also pretty good - a bountiful order as well. In addition to that I also enjoyed their chicken wings (a "1 - oh - something") that were really more like drumettes. Believe me, no chicken could have ever flown with what was served to us. Those too, hit the spot. I did observe some service issues at other tables while I was waiting for my friends to come, but our service was spot on. It's a BYOB place - we enjoyed dinner with some Eugene Porter from Revolution Brewery - a good pick. Overall a good choice - as some have noted, it's a little hard to find and parking is best done at the CBD lot across the street.

Maybe it's because I'm vietnamese and I'm spoiled with how something should taste, but Green Basils food wasn't what it all seemed to be. I come back only because it's the only place that has what I want, but if I'm honest I just settle. The service is poor, and rude too. And how do you expect someone to understand you repeating your order if you say just the numbers ? I ordered by name, I want to hear it back by its name. And the food tastes different each time. I only go back because I settled. Expensive, rude service, long wait, & did I say rude?
(2)Ellen M.
The guy and I had a delightful meal the other night. Appetizers of tofu spring rolls and papaya salad with fresh mint, shrimp and pork. The papaya dish alone would have been a fine entrée, and was super. The rolls came with peanut and chili sauce. The guy ordered a cornish hen that was delicious well beyond our expectations. All in all, the flavor combination possibilities were bountiful. The service is polite. It's not a fancy place. The servers are dressed casually - it's all about the food. BYOB! Good / fast / cheap, it gets a perfect rating.
(5)Ann H.
Asked for a table for two and they said the wait was 30 minutes. My jaw dropped. The dining area was empty except for a few tables. I've seen busier Pho places and still didn't have to wait. There are plenty of other places to eat, why waste time here.
(1)C C.
Went in just based on Yelp reviews, and ended up really enjoying our experience. Authentic pho, though the add-on offerings were a bit limited. Wait staff was very nice and helpful, but could have been more attentive (We often found ourselves waiting for water.). It's a bit hard to find as it is set back off the road; but walkable from either campus or downtown. Perfect for lunch or a nice night out, although the dining room can get a bit cramped when crowded. Go and try something new, as the menu is smaller but very well done.
(4)Rosa C.
I love the food here specially the fried rice, rice wrap with shrimp and more the smoothies!. My favorite Avocado smoothie. The price is decent

Gave this place a second try today First time we waited 15mins for a waiter to say HI to us. Waited another 30min for food wht upsetting was the three tables came after us got their food before us. The place was about 75% full but not excuse! The food was ok cant compare the ones in chicago and overpriced obviously! Today second chance. They said they close at 3pm got there 2:40pm was told the kitchen was about to close. Asked if we wanted order carryout we asked since we knw wht we want can we be seated....was told the kitchen is closing.....in my mind u just told us we can order carryout but cant seat but kitchen is closing....does it even make sense?!?? Since this is like the only place around here they will probably be in business for a very long time. ....
(1)Maria T.
First time. Impressed by service, presentation of food, and taste... yummy. The smoothies are deelish. Parking can be an issue but we were lucky.
(4)U J.
This was really upsetting to learn but this restaurant uses MSG. I found out by accident after I brought a friend here who is very sensitive to additives and she immediately got a migraine. We called them after and it was admitted they do use it, although they tried to lie about it at first.

I have always been disappointed with the pho in Naperville and whenever I crave pho, i would go up to Glendale Heights to Pho Ha. It's a long drive but always worth it to me, that is, until I discovered Green Basil downtown Naperville! The restaurant could be a little hard to find, but it is next to USBank on Jefferson. Around the corner from Quigley's Irish Pub. Park in the city ramp! Don't park at the USBank or the nearby business lots, they will tow your car. The ambiance is great and the restaurant is extremely clean, The food is amazing here, high quality/fresh ingredients, authentic, and an excellent value for downtown Naperville. I would give the service 4 stars, but the food makes up for it, and deserves 5 stars overall. If you are craving pho or good Vietnamese food, I would say this is the top spot in Naperville. I had the chicken pho and the sliced beef pho, both excellent! The pork chop was also amazing. The pork chop comes with a small bowl of chicken pho soup. Next time I plan on trying the jumbo shrimp, filet mignon, and the dripped coffee. The mango and coconut smoothie looked good too. There are only two authentic Asian restaurants I would recommend in Naperville, Mapo and Green Basil. If you are downtown Naperville, don't miss out on Green Basil!
(5)C. C.
I am really disappointed with the dinner experience at Green Basil and for the following reasons: The dinner services was super slow and it took a while before a server came over to take my spouse and mine order. Not to mention, I feel like the pricing for the dishes that were listed on the menu were over priced. The flavor of the dishes are pretty basic. Nothing special other than that they try to make the dish look contemporary. It was nice to try this place once but I am not sold on coming back for a second dining experience.
(2)Janni V.
Food: excellent. Quality of ingredients and skill of execution was more than abundant with all the dishes my group ordered. My bo la lot was made with actual la lot leaves (not grape leaves, like some places substitute -- which is fine, but just to state). BYOB corkage fee is currently $5, which is totally reasonable -- and nice since Tasting deVine is right up the street *nudge, nudge*. Service: good, but a little flustered. Example: one person at our table ordered a big bowl of soup, but the server had to be flagged down a little later in order to get a spoon. We also had to ask a couple of times for them to cork our bottle and bring us some wine glasses. We went early on a Saturday night, before the place got really busy. Location: If you can get someone else to drive or you're within walking distance, this is a fantastic place to have some legit Vietnamese food. Prices are completely reasonable for the quality, quantity, and execution of the food that you get. If you tend to get nervous about driving/parking in congested areas, keep that in mind if you go -- this place IS located in downtown Naperville.
(5)Jaime D.
Best Pho in Naperville. A little hard to find(kitty-cornered on a side street by community college) but food is so worth it!
(5)Jie S.
It is such a nice restaurant for pho noodle soup and other Vietnamese food. I am always craving for a nice pho soup during the winter time. So glad I found this place in downtown Naperville. It is a very homey and relaxing setting of this place. It has plenty bright natural light during the lunch time. The entire wooden floor and all bamboo-ish tables and chair give the lobby a settled feeling. I feel like I could sit by the window for the whole afternoon. The pho noodle soup was very decent with the fresh ingredients and just perfectly seasoned. The fried rice was well welcomed by kids. I also loved the Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk. The waitress was very professional and super quick. The only thing I didn't like was the parking. The restaurant was not easily found as the restaurant is not facing the street but on the east side of the building. The building is on the north side of Jefferson but I could NOT turn into the park lot from Jefferson. It is one way out. I have not figured out how to park in front of the restaurant yet. You could either need to park on the side of the street or park at the park garage across the street.
(4)Jen S.
I have to preface this review by stating that the service almost ruined our experience at this restaurant. First the bad. The service there is highly questionable. It was obvious that the girl did not want to be there. Although we arrived before two other tables, they were served before us (drinks and orders). The waitress (possibly a bus girl) was very very rude. She rolled her eyes when we asked for clean silverware. We tried to get her attention multiple times, but she was insistent on ignoring us. We asked for fish sauce for our pho, and she brought the wrong one (rolled her eyes once again as if it was our fault). Luckily the nice Asian girl upfront took over to save our experience. Such horrible service for such a nice town. Now the good. Pho tai (beef noodle soup) was rich in flavor. The goi gun (summer rolls) were tasty. The crispy egg rolls are highly recommended. Get take out if you're going to eat at this place.

Yes, this place is the cleanest pho I've ever been to. This restaurant takes the place of a home because there's a fireplace where everyone dines. First impression, fresh abundance of vegetables and a good wholesome bowl. Nice hot broth that isn't overwhelmed with MSG. Nice! I like this place already. Second impression, where's my che ba mau? I'm done with my pho before it is brought out after I had asked about it halfway through my bowl. Third impression, THIS is a che ba mau?? This cocktail cup with what looks like the right ingredients for che ba mau but has a funny/weird aftertaste? I don't really treat che ma bau as a dessert, it's more of a drink to me so if it came in a tall glass beer mug, I'm cool with it. I almost expect for it. The cup is frivolous with a long spoon out of it. It looks like the $3-4 che ba mau is more for looks and not for the actual che ma bau content. Fourth impression, why is it taking so long to get the check? I don't know. It has the ingredients of a pho restaurant but it's not an authentic Vietnamese pho restaurant. I feel like it's a diluted or twilight zone version of a Vietnamese pho restaurant that is trying to reach to the level of an American-style restaurant with pretty decor, fancy drink cocktail glasses, and folded paper napkins. There's just a lot of things here and there that are just off and doesn't sell it to me. The bowl of pho was pretty ok though, but nothing to rave everything about.
(2)Kaye D.
For someone who has dined at numerous hole-in-the-wall pho locations, I give points for cleanliness of this restaurant and for it being situated in a former home. And points for the pho broth for not being overly salty when initially served. But I felt like they were skimping a bit on the meat portion. I've had more "substantial" large bowls of pho. Pricing is fair for the portions. The server's attentiveness was okay with nothing to add or brag about. There are a steady flow of customers, but with enough tables in the restaurant, none had to wait for a table on a Saturday evening.
(3)Mateo K.
Service quality was much better this time. Still, clearly, not a trained waiter, but very ernest and moved quickly.
(4)Leang E.
This would be the spot to come to if I have to get Vietnamese food in the suburbs. My main reason for this is because of the prices. I am spoiled by all the options in Argyle in the city. The place is kind of tucked away in a plaza, and you have to sort of be looking for it. The decor is simple and classy and relaxing. The service was good. The pho and the goi cuon was very tasty. The Vietnamese coffee was killer. I was happy to introduce my cousin to a new spot close to her and have a place to come back to.

A friend of mine sent me the website link for this restaurant and said it was a great find. So, last week, my husband and i, went in for dinner. I must say this place is a fantastic find! The flavors were great and the staff friendly. I had not had Vietnamese food before, and I must say I like it better than Chinese. I suggest you give this restaurant a try! It is quite a find! greenbasil-restaurant.com

Two stars for level of customer service here and it seems I'm not the only one to have experience the long wait for food and service here. I actually came here several months ago but haven't gotten a chance to write up my review. I came here on a busy day, granted that, but when you're most busy and when it's most chaotic is when service is most important! While their food is A-Okay, it is nothing to leave you dreaming for. I'm Vietnamese and personally, the food here is not as authentic as some of the places in Argyle. Although, they have fresh ingredients, I'm not so sure that a 40 minute wait for appetizer and over 1 hour wait for entree "pho soups" are worth it. On top of that, the beef salad I had ordered, (I swear) came out raw! I had to dip my raw beef into my HOT boiling soup entree to try to cook it myself! I would have told someone but being that it already took me an hour to get my food, I didn't want to bother with another complaint to see if they will even address it. Overall my impression of this place? I just remember coming here, sitting for a really long time to wait for my food, and whenever we wanted to check in to see how much longer it will take, our waitress acted like she could careless. In fact, her tone was condescending a bit with a reply with something that was along the lines of "we're very busy as you can see" (yes I can see) and "I don't know when your food will come out but it will be out (really, that's the best thing you can tell me?!). She didn't apologize for the wait, and she did not try to tell me if it would be another 5 minute or 45 minutes! If I wasn't with a group of people that day, I would have walked myself out of there. Honestly, a customer's experience in a food place can be of two things: 1) they remember how great the food was or 2) they remember how bad the service was. Sometimes if you're lucky, they'll remember 3) that both food AND service was phenomenal. This place falls in category #2: unsympathetic service. On top of that, their food is nothing to rave about. In my opinion, the price here is high, the food is overrated because it's by downtown Naperville. It needs a lot more of a personal touch and better prices to push this place back up on my list!
(2)Nikki K.
I recently moved to Naperville. I am rating this 5 stars because it's the only Vietnamese restaurant in my area with decent pho.
(5)Lynn S.
WOW! I'm SO thankful to everyone who wrote about Green Basil and gave it a good rating b/c it was EVERYTHING they said it was, and THEN some. The chef is obviously quite talented! My two sisters and I stopped in on a Tuesday night around 8pm. We were greeted warmly and promptly at the door and offered to sit where we would like when the first table was too brightly lit for us. Our service was excellent (evidently, any review of poor service is being addressed). All of our food was fresh, hot and delicious!! We were also so happy to see that they do take out - we'll be back for sure!!! One note: it is on the side of Jefferson next to Quigley's (by the brown building) - definitely "tucked" away. Take their phone number with so they will helpfully guide you there.
(5)Ivy P.
I love Pho and it's very hard to look for good Vietnamese restaurants in Chicagoland. When we stumbled upon Green Basil on Yelp I was excited to try it. They did not disappoint! I loved the cute atmosphere! The prices were reasonable and the food was delicious! Their Pho tasted authentic and I enjoyed it very much. We will be coming back and Green Basil has become our Pho spot for this cold winter season!

I came in during my lunch hour to get some pho because everyone was raving about this place. It's an adorable, simple place with wooden floors and white walls. It seemed like a cozy place to get pho. The waitress/hostess at the front seated me in the back near the window. It't not a huge establishment, but I was excited to come by. Here's where trouble began. I was never approached by anyone at my table. The person who I assumed was my waitress, lifted one finger, while standing by another table, me to signal "one minute" without even looking at me. No smile, just one finger from a distance to signal a minute. Eight more minutes passed and she was serving everyone else around me but no further eye contact. No one came by to give me water, and I sat there for about 10 minutes without any sort of acknowledgement. It was clear to me that I was a bother for coming. I got up and left and never got to try the food. It was really disappointing. I will give kudos to the girl who sat me down. She saw me heading towards the door and asked why I was leaving. I explained and she apologized. But yes, I never got to try their food. I'm sure it was amazing but I will not be ignored or rudely signaled "one minute." I understand restaurants and lunch hours can be busy - my family owned a restaurant in the past so I can relate. But some friendly customer service feedback, you are never too busy to take 10 seconds, walk over and say "Hi, it will be another minute or two. We're a little busy." versus just giving someone a "one minute signal across the room." Customers will understand. Ignoring them or just giving less than friendly contact isn't inviting and can be offensive. I do not believe I will return.

Good...very good. But not great! As an Asian food specialist I suppose my standards are absurd but I simply was not impressed by the menu. The green basil fried rice was dry and overly spiced. The remainder of my main was pretty good. Service was awful, food was good. Therefore, average rating.

This is a great place to get authentic Vietnamese food. The food is right up there with other great Vietnamese restaurants in Chicago's Uptown and Rogers Park. Chef / Owner Nick Nguyen, former head chef at Sawtooth in Chicago (Michelin Guide recommended), has finally brought a worthy taste of Vietnam to the Southwest suburbs of Chicago, where authentic Vietnamese can be hard to find. Of the 13 or so restaurants serving Vietnamese dishes in the Naperville area, only 2 are completely Vietnamese; the rest are fusion. This is by far the best choice of them all. I like the fact that it's tucked away from the noisy and often congested part of Downtown Naperville because it adds to its quaint and cozy vibe. Even though it's a little bit pricier than Chicago prices and is BYOB, I still give it a 5 stars because it saves me a trip to Chicago to get great Vietnamese food. If you end up appreciating the food here, please try learning the names of your favorite dishes and stop calling them by the numbers . Even the most feeble attempt to pronounce the Vietnamese name of a dish shows your appreciation for the food and the culture it represents. A friend and I set out Saturday night for some good Vietnamese food...and decided, upon her previous experiences here, to come to Green Basil. It was my first time. I'm always on the look out for new restaurants so when this place sneaked onto the Naperville scene, I was surprised. It has gained word of mouth for one reason alone...the food. Nothing about the rest of our experience here was worth returning for. Upon entering the lobby area, you're staring at a disorganized service station that could easily (and should) be disguised or be made less unsightly. The rest of the place is small and plain. A little paint for color would liven it up a lot. We didn't have to wait very long for a table, although the small restaurant was full when we arrived. The waitress was maybe 19 or 20 and absolutely clueless. I asked her about two things on the menu to which the response was "um, they're different". Yeah, okay, that's helpful sweetie. I had brought two beers with me (BYOB, score! 50 cents to open each, $5 cork fee for wine) and after ordering she brought both to the table and acted confused to why I didn't want them at the same time. Strike two. There is an obvious lack of experience or training of the wait staff here. The whole front of the house staff was under 21 (best guess) and every single one of them, including the eldest male who seemed semi-in-charge moved like molasses and had blank looks on their faces. I'm not kidding, we sat for about thirty minutes with FIVE empty tables around us covered in dirty dishes. Every one of these kids wandered by them numerous times without clearing a plate. We noticed what seemed to be a busser appear toward the end of our meal who began to clear tables. So annoying. If I were the owner I would be irate -- I mean, new diners had to walk in and by all those dirty tables! Okay, on to the positives...the eggroll appetizer was good. Fresh and crispy with a more interesting sauce than the typical sweet and sour. I had the beef pho, very good once doctored with some basil, soy and lime juice. Huge portion! I took half of it home -- oh while I'm on that subject, they bring you a container for it. I'm not exactly sure how one manages to transfer the pho to this provided container, but luckily my friend held it over her empty bowl and didn't spill much. It would be nice if they offered to do such a task in the kitchen where spillage would be more avoidable. My friend let me try her chicken curry which was awesome. The meat was incredibly tender. One other thing I'll mention is that the food does take a little longer than one might expect, we decided that it must be because the chef does most of what happens in the kitchen (which is great!) It would be in their best interest to train their servers to set that expectation to guests: "Our chef personally handles each dish in the kitchen so your food may take slightly longer than you might expect in other establishments...blah blah" I really hope the owners read these because they need to see a pattern in the reviews.... YOUR FOOD IS GOOD, PEOPLE LIKE IT. YOUR SERVICE SUCKS, TRAIN YOUR STAFF. Think of Naperville as the Black Widow of restaurants...if everything isn't on par, you'll be eaten alive. Food, Service, Ambiance, Cost. Strike the balance quickly or poor word of mouth or the next food establishment will knock you off the playing field before you've served your last pho.

My husband and I went there last 2/10/15. We had an amazing appetizer which was the fried tofu with Jalapeno. They had great soup!!! I love their vietnamese iced coffee with milk delicious!!! The service was kinda slow though however the food was delicious.

Given how Green Basil is kind of tucked away and can be hard to find, the fact that I run into someone I know every time I come here is definitely a sign that they're doing something right. I walked in with my family around 7:50pm on a Sunday, completely unaware that they close at 8pm. Thankfully, the servers--two adorably dopey teenage boys--didn't kick us out and said we just have to order quickly and try not to loiter too long. But then one of them went and complained about us coming in late to another table. Teenagers... We got our order in right away and the food came out fairly quickly. The aroma of delicious pho immediately enters your nostrils but you will probably have to flag down the same dopey server to get some spoons before you can devour it and lick the bowl clean. I also tried the pork belly bahn mi sandwich. Fatty cuts of meat on perfectly baked bread? Gluttonous YUM. and BYOB! Prices are very reasonable also-- about $9 for a sizable bowl of pho and $5 for bahn mi. Especially now that the weather is getting nicer, come for a comforting meal and then you get the option of walking it off in Downtown Naperville or collapsing at home in a food coma. It's a win/win/win situation.

Green basil is the best Vietnamese restaurant around the Naperville area. Have I had better, yes! But as I mentioned, not around here. The location tucks this charming restaurant away. I enjoy their pho and have enjoyed other items but my go to is definitely the pho. Service is hit or miss which is unfortunate. I certainly hope they are able to figure something out and up their game in that category because I certainly wouldn't want this restaurant to go away.
(4)Jenna W.
I would definitely recommend this place. I go there probably once a week for my pho fix. I always get the chicken pho. It's also BYOB for wine and beer for a small corking fee. The only reason I gave this place three stars is because the service isn't the best. I wouldn't expect them to come back and refill your water, but they're friendly when you come in and if you're picking up. Also they could give fresher herbs with the pho, but overall I recommend the pho.

In Mother Russia, Pho eat you Its tucked away in that white #43 building, so be sure you see it Delicious Pho. I've only had it at a handful of places, so I'm not the expert, but this is the best by far, and I've really liked most of the other places. I had the #304, beef this and beef that, no tripe or tendon in mine. I also tried the yellow curry which was also delicious, and I may get that next time I will definitely be back, Groupon or not, this place was tasty!!! Beware!!! in Mother Russia, Groupon discount you
(4)Daniel L.
Seriously? I've been duped! The place is a bit too clean. The broth is too clean and light. No dirtiness here! I called asking if this place is BYOB, and they said yes. But they forgot to mention that they have a corkage fee of $0.25 per beer bottle. Now I'm not trying to be a cheapass here, but seriously, let me know such things ahead of time! It's like going to a hotel room where it's advertised that there's free wifi, only to find out that the wifi comes as part of a resort fee. Doesn't leave a good taste in your mouth, like this pho.
(2)Andrew T.
Quaint little spot hidden just outside the heart of downtown Naperville. This place is really easy to miss, but you should not. The customer service here is great. They are friendly, give recommendations and are not overbearing. I always order the pho with every imaginable cut of meat in it, and spring rolls. Both did a great job. I love the aroma of hot pho, it may just be the best hangover food. The noodles are not overly starchy and the broth warms you up almost instantaneously. The environment is very relaxed, it feels like you are visiting a friend's grandma and she wants to feed you everything she can make. It is also very clean and well-lit. The only drawback I have of this place is the music. There are times they play heart-wrenching love ballads, and there are times you hear bass-pumping Vietnamese techno, which I am not too entirely big on. Is this place supposed to be a night club as well?!
(4)Y2jay21 ..
This place is too tiny. Stopped by a couple times and always full so no point in waiting 30 min. Many other places out there.
(1)Joseph M.
This place is on the far side of the building and it's therefore real easy to miss, so keep your eyes peeled. I had the green basil fried rice and absolutely loved it. Delicious flavor all around. I will be definitely going back. For a Russian restaurant, this place sure has great Vietnamese food.
(5)Boomer B.
Our most recent visit here was a real dud. The service was VERY slow, even though there were almost as many staff as customers! It took over 25 minutes for a simple appetizer to arrive and our waitress never once came to check on us to see if we needed water or anything else. One of our dishes was overcooked (shrimp) and stone cold, as if it was done long before the other dish, so they just let it sit there until the second dish was ready. The table next to us sat piled with dirty dishes for 45 minutes before someone came to clean it up. This was mid-afternoon on a Saturday, so maybe the REAL staff was not there? The restaurant still has the problem of having a messy entryway, as if you're entering through a sloppy office and pantry area.

In my continuing quest to find awesome pho, I went to Green Basil with the fam on a blustery February evening. And....it was good pho!I would even go as far to say that it's the best that I've had in the area, except for Hue Palace in Joliet. Yeah, Joliet. The broth was pretty decent, and the meat was the best quality of any suburban pho I've had so far. Yes, I said "suburban pho". I can't say I've had "city pho", so that means nothing. But yes, if I had three thumbs, I'd give it three thumbs up. We also got a chicken wings appetizer, which was pretty good! They were deep fried and came with a dipping sauce full of bits and goodies. We also got this awesome pork chop topped with a fried egg. It tasted delicious like a unicorn and I would eat it again and again. In terms of ambience, this place was ok. It's located in the Jefferson Hill Shops, which kind of gives it a haunted house vibe. Spookies! Not that it's old and crusty, it's actually very clean and updated. Also, the waiters wear like these little bluetooth ear things. Awesome! I felt like I was talking to a stock broker on the go: buy, sell, buy, sell, you're fired!

The pho restaurants that I frequented while on holiday in Ho Chi Minh City, Danang, and Hanoi have nothing on this humble little place in downtown Naperville-excepting the lack of hot Vietnamese girlfriends. The food here is fantastic! It's obvious that Chef Nguyen takes his profession very seriously, and the freshness of the ingredients and the stellar presentation thereof are emblematic of his earnestness. The crispy eggrolls, although deep fried, are light, delicious, and ununctuous (I just made that word up-I mean they aren't greasy). My Bun Bo Hue was gorgeous and had the perfect level of piquance. I would suggest going a bit heavier on the beef, Chef Nguyen. Also, a word of advice to the wait people: When a formerly hip, middle aged white guy-even a well traveled one- orders the Bun Bo Hue, don't offer the "Blood Cube", because you're likely to turn his ravenous appetite into a churning, gurgling pepto-bismal craving case of pseudo traveler's stomach. I guess it's in keeping with the Vietnamese tradition and the authenticity of the food, but the mere thought nearly gave me the dry heaves. The Green Basil Com Chien is loaded with shrimp, beef, veggies, etc and is delicious. And the Pho Ga is delicious and perfect for kids, as it's much like a revved up, Asian style chicken noodle soup. The décor is nice, but I nearly ruptured a disc sitting on a chair that needed to be repaired, and the service is friendly, but not necessarily frequent. The prices are very reasonable.

Oh myyyyyyy I've fallen for noooooooodles. Honestly had never tried Vietnamese before and now I'm addicted to that and Thai. I ordered out, pick up only. The food came disassembled, though it was kinda fun to mix it all together. Like a food kit. Lol The broth, flavorful. The herbs and chicken, fresh and yummy. It's a hidden little place. But well worth the search.

I really wanted to like this place but it was just ok. We were seated quickly but waited around for 15 minutes before anyone even came over. There were other tables around us that had the same problem. I have a chicken sandwich and it was pretty good, but my friend had the special and said it was gross...like the meat was spoiled. I tried it and it did have a odd taste. Odd like it had sat out too long in the heat. The waitress brought my bubble tea right away, which was awesome, but my friend had to ask her 2 times for his iced tea. Then we had to ask someone else for our check and then another person for a box. It was kind of frustrating and it seemed like they were SUPER understaffed. I don't think this place will last long....
(2)Howard L.
I'd go with about 3.5 stars here. It's a nice downtown Naperville location for pho. It's also BYOB with a nominal corkage fee for beer or wine. I didn't try them but Vietnamese sandwiches can be had for $4.95. I had the #304 pho bowl for $7.50. The bowl was quite large, so you get a lot of broth, but the noodles and meat serving size was pretty typical, so it was overall a typical value. Service was a little slow on a busy weekday lunch hour. You do get comfortable, cozy dining in a historic building, and a convenient location right across the street from the two story parking garage on east Jefferson.

Searching for something local on a Friday night, we hit on this via Yelp. It's a little out of the way, maybe even hard to spot, not in the usual block layout of the rest of downtown Naperville, but it's worth visiting. I had the pho special, a spicy soup with beef shank and a sort of pork sausage (which was listed as "pork pastries", and made me think almost won tons. I was slightly disappointed, but it was so good, it didn't matter.). I dressed it up like normal, plenty of chile sauce on top of the already spicy broth, and proceeded to eat almost the whole thing. Oof. The beef was chewy with good beef flavor, and the pork sausage was tender and flavorful. Others had a good fried rice dish with nice shrimp and fresh pineapple, and another had what was called a cornish game hen, but was basically a small chicken, fried and served with broth and rice. Very good. Service is very friendly, and prices are good. I know pho is never that expensive, but I figured in Naperville it'd take a price hike just cause. But you can easily eat for $8. Plus really good little lychee candies in the dish by the front door. Probably all together, this is a strong three star - a three and a half, if only it was allowed...
(3)Ariuna J.
Love the a food ! Service is really slow Wednesday night waited 1.15 minute to get two pho soup !
(5)Melanie A.
LOVE the food, absolutely HATE the service. I would've given this place 5 stars if it weren't for the awful service time and time again.
(4)Shin M.
I got the 301 today. I thought the pho was just ok... it was nothing special and the soup base did not have much taste to it. I've definitely had more flavorful soup before. Not much else to say...
(2)Pascal M.
Two simple words that will forever change your life, Banh...Mi... They make 4 different variations, their house specialty with head cheese is more stunning than a 3 legged cow playing baseball. The bread is ultra fresh and served just the way it should be, slightly toasted. Flaky, crispy, yet not heavy to overwhelm the sandwich. Fkn yum! They offer quite a few other things that I imagine will be knocked out the park. Such as Pho, spring rolls, and some rice & vermicelli dishes that I cant wait to try. Green Basil is outstanding. A hidden gem.
(5)Minkkwan W.
Came here for Mothers Day and was pleasantly surprised by the incredibly clean, cute, and simple decor inside. The food also came out fresh and full of flavors. Ban Xeo was warm and crispy. Tofu and Beef/shrimp spring rolls were light crisp and fresh. Meatball pho was big and generous with a good clean broth. Another stand out dish was the papaya salad appetizer. Overall, we had a wonderful time, my mom thoroughly enjoyed everything, and we will definitely be recommending this place to others and coming back ourselves.
(5)Patty M.
Slow service!! Ordered vermicelli noodles with beef. Noodles were water logged. Asked for fresh noodles and we were refused fresh noodles. Spring Rolls were not fresh, rice paper was stiff. Like they were sitting in kitchen. Will never go back!!!

I have grabbed lunch from this location a number of times due to its close proximity to my work, but that does not mean I'm an avid fan as I have frequent the place less and less lately. I have mixed feelings/opinions after having tried a variety of dishes. Few Simple Points I do applaud the subtle touches that the chef try to incorporate into Vietnamese cooking such as lime infused phish/fish sauce for the bo la lot. (stealing that idea/perfect) Both Pho and Bun Bo Hue are nothing special. Smaller portions than usual with the Pho broth lacking that "deep" hearty beef/bone flavor. It had that artificial sweet taste. Vietnamese Pancake/Crepe = uh...ripoff / simply bad Unfortunately, I feel that the passion for delivering excellent taste have wane. Service is typically slow. I have no idea why the boss hired these kids. Recent outing - Ordered the Pho for my gf and the Bo La Lot (if you haven't figured it out already, this is the only current dish that I eat here) and the kid screwed up my order. 2 friggin items, how do you mess that up?!?! So he brought out her Pho, and I sit there until she finishes. My order finally comes out and then my gf had to wait for me to finish...Is that even right/proper especially for a patron that comes more often than others? All I got was a weak insincere apology from the kid. Will no longer come back based on principles regarding the service matter.
(3)Rex L.
We had #106 - Calamari; #304 - Beef Pho; #418 - Shrimp and rice and the #512 - bean and jello dessert. All were delicious and fresh. Good service and very reasonable prices. Wine was amazing (because we brought our own). I hoping this restaurant can make it as it's a terrible location that has seen numerous other restaurants fail. I believe their food and prices should create a good following.
(4)Jacqui M.
I tried this place because I was searching for a good local banh mi, and I found it here. Finally I don't have to go out to the city to feed my banh mi cravings! The sticky wings app is really, really good. I've also tried the calamari app and was pleased. Good service. It's kind of hidden away -- around the corner from Quigleys. I just wish it wasn't in downtown Naperville because that makes it more difficult to just stop in really quick for takeout.
(4)Jen L.
First time trying Pho. Yes, I do know how to properly say it. I didn't know what to expect, but it was an overall good experience. I had the 304 and it was very good.
(4)Amy I.
Best Vietnamese food in Chicago land hands down! Muc rang muoi and goi is a must! The iced coffee is best I've ever had. I'm not a Vietnamese iced coffee fan so that says a lot. It took me 5 months to find a decent place to eat. This place met my expectations of and some. Try this place if you're seeking authentic Vietnamese food!
(5)Julie L.
My husband, daughter and I hadn't eaten at a Vietnamese restaurant before. We love all asian food, so we were eager to try anything. What a great introduction! All of our dishes were flavorful and delicious! Our waitress was just ok. I asked her if the Sticky Wings were spicy and she didn't know. She wasn't very friendly when we asked her questions. But the owner came out and was very friendly and accommodating. Overall, our experience was a good one. Definitely try it if you're in the area.
(4)Christine N.
I've been coming to this restaurant on a regular basis since it's opened. So has my family, and my sister and her husband (the Vietnamese member of my family) are friends with the owner. I really wish I could give a better review, especially with the given circumstances. I only come for one of the soups and the house special sandwich. I like to venture and get different foods off a menu, but going here these are what I crave. And I'm happy that they cook MSG-free. I would rate the food I get at 4 stars, much of the time 5 stars. Unfortunately, the service is just about always fair to extremely poor. If only there was a better rating system on Yelp, I would rate the service separately at 0 stars if I could. I give 1 star in total because of the consistency over the years of poor service and with all of the complaints that have circulated and not been remedied as of yet. There were two girls there for some time over the summer that were very sweet and alert that provided excellent service, though I haven't seen them recently, and still getting my food would at times take 40 minutes or longer (I've sat there with no one visiting my table as long as an hour) to come out. The Asian girl with the glasses that's been serving longest (manager?) has really bad, angry, flustered energy. She's a bit better recently as she hasn't rolled her eyes at me for several months. Though today, for the first time ever I had forgotten my wallet (it's always in my bag). After I told the other girl, she went to the front and told the Asian waitress who ended up looking exasperated while she threw her arms out and her jaw dropped in disbelief in front of all the patrons. I approached them to try to alleviate the situation and to apologize about it and said I'd be right back. The Asian waitress was all stressed out and frustrated with me and asked for me to leave something "for collateral" as she put it. I had nothing with my info or of any value to leave. She didn't know what to do and insisted I leave something. I was like, are you serious? I've been seeing you consistently for the past few years. I left my name, said I could write out my drivers' license number, mentioned my sister and brother-in-law's names and told her to mention them to the owner. She threw her hands up and said that's fine. "Just make sure to come back because I don't want to get in trouble" is what she said verbatim, and basically dismissed me. WTF is jammed up her a**? I'm always extremely pleasant, friendly and polite coming in, even despite how I've been treated over the years. I'm an exceptional patron as I always give at least 20% tip (though not today - I should have given nothing) and I stack all the plates wipe the table and put everything in a nice pile as a consideration because I try to treat everyone I come in contact with very personably and as humanely as possible. I bring my own water and try not to waste with extra limes or anything like that. And I get some of the SHI**IEST treatment. To cover their a**es, a couple of the waiters and a waitress told me that the owner is the only cook on hand, thus the fluctuating wait times for food. The owner needs to take full responsibility for his business, but because this is the only immediate option here for good Vietnamese food, people learn to put up with it. Thank you for the great food and clean restaurant. From a customer service standpoint, the always full parking lot when even not one other person is dining inside besides me, and being instructed to park elsewhere, and for being a part of the service industry, it's a MASSIVE FAIL.

I recently ate here with my boyfriend, we ordered the Bo Nuong Sot Dat Biet (Grilled cubed filet mignon with house special ginger, watercress and sauce) for an appetizer. Very good flavor, a good start to the meal. I ordered the Bun Thit Nuong (Rice vermicelli with grilled pork tenderloin, lettuce, bean sprout, mint, roasted peanuts and fish sauce) all I can say is yum!! I received a very large bowl of noodles that were sprinkled with meat, plenty of veggies to mix in and a very good fish sauce. My boyfriend ordered Pho Dac Biet (House specialty noodles w/ sliced beef, brisket, flank, tripe, tendon and meatballs). The broth smelled wonderful and the taste did not disappoint. He also received lots of fresh veggies to mix in. We finished up with the iced Vietnamese coffee with condensed milk which was a great ending to a tasty meal. We will definitely make the trek back to try more menu items.

This is how pho is supposed to taste. The end.

You go to Green Basil for one reason and one reason only....THE FOOD. In regards to the atmosphere...It's like eating dinner under police interrogation lights or a heat lamp. The wait staff....direct and to the point. The food.......Fantastic!!!!! Fresh with plenty of delicious vegetables. Lots of fresh mint. Not salty. Just perfect. I had been pining for Bo La Lot for 15 years. It was worth the wait - grilled ground beef wrapped in piper leaves with fish sauce that was perfectly spiced. We had it for an appetizer, along with Goi Cuon Chay - vegetarian tofu, mint, cucumbers wrapped in rice paper. The special was seafood crepe - wish I had another right now! If you're hungry, order the whole red snapper with pineapple, tomato and a spicy sour sauce. Moist, tender fish flaked deliciously under lightly fried batter exterior. It was enough for a small family, but of course, my husband ate the whole thing! I can't say simply "Go for lunch," because you would miss out on the dinner menu. Take a bottle of wine or two (BYOB), dress lightly and go as soon as possible. We want to make sure this restaurant lasts in Naperville.
(4)Terry F.
Wow - Naperville is so lucky to finally have a great Vietnamese restaurant right down town. We started with the Shrimp spring rolls pictured in the photos. They were some of the best I have had. I also had to try the ham bahn mi sandwich which was great, I love the bread. It wasn't on the dinner menu but the chef was nice enough to make it for me. WOW!! I then had the house specialty Pho Dac Biet. All of the ingredients where fresh and flavorful. My wife had the Tom Rang Man shrimp dish. She loved her dish a ton too. She also ordered a side of broccoli which was perfectly cooked and a beautiful green. All dishes are pictured in the photos. We will be going back soon - maybe weekly it is that good.
(5)Brant W.
My family and I have been to this hidden treat in downtown Naperville a few times, probably the best Vietnamese around. Pho is really good, lots of meat. Everything I have had has been really good. The only downside is when it gets busy, service can be slow, from getting water to the food ordered.
(4)Andrew L.
I'd been wanting to try pho for quite some time, and Green Basil was only the second time I've ever had it. The first time was only three days before this, so I am by no means a pho connoisseur. When it comes to Vietnamese cuisine, I can't really say that I know what I'm talking about, but I do know that I thoroughly enjoyed my meal at Green Basil. We went for lunch on a Saturday slightly before noon (before the time I used to eat breakfast during my bachelor days) and we were the only ones in the restaurant, but by the time we left there were a few other diners. We started off with the Goi Cuon appetizer (shrimp, pork w/ lettuce, bean sprout and rice vermicelli wrapped in rice paper), and it was quite good, and we both ordered Pho Tai Nam Gau (beef noodles w/ sliced beef, brisket and flank). I'm sure the staff and other patrons were laughing at us as we fumbled our way through our meal and tried to figure out how we were supposed to eat pho and which garnishes and sauces go where, and we may or may not have had to ask for a fork... All in all the meal was quite delicious and I can definitely see myself visiting Green Basil Again.
(4)Kaz L.
This place is delish!!! Their grilled meat marinations give the real flavor and scent of Vietnam cooking. I'm not too impressed with their pho (too sweet) but do love their spicy beef soup (bun Bo hue) if you like spicy this is for you. Also try thei beef cubes apps, you'll get a hint of sweet sour and grilled beef bursting in your mouth! Oh and their crepes, so good!
(5)Tammy L.
I have only been here a couple of times for lunch, since I work nearby. So far, so good! This most recent visit I ordered a cold rice noodle dish with shrimp skewers (should come with pork but I don't eat red meat). It was so nice and refreshing. It comes with lettuce leaves, mint, cucumber and pickled veggies for making little wraps, as well as the standard fish sauce-lime juice sauce that's a staple of Vietnamese cuisine. Nothing revolutionary about the fish, but it was well done and hit the spot. Service is very friendly and accommodating. Last time my friend and I split a catfish in caramel sauce (so tasty but beware it has pork, in case you don't eat that) and a banh xeo, a big crispy pancake with shrimp and pork. We requested it without pork and the first time it came out with it. So we reminded the waitress that we did not want pork and she was so apologetic and brought out another one. Would have been nice if she had warned us about the pork in the catfish dish, but oh well. I did not realize it until I started eating my leftovers the next day and found lots of little meaty tidbits on the bottom. My friend and I split a mango smoothie and it was ok--not sure I would order it again, but not bad FYI those contain condensed milk, in case tou are a lactard like me. Nevertheless, I will be back when I have a craving for Vietnamese food at work!

So I spent a lot of time cruising through West Chicagoland eating Vietnamese, Korean and Thai and this place was definitely a step above. I'm a fan of both the location and it's interior. However, the real stand out was a lunch menu that was far more expansive than the usual Pho and rice vermicelli dishes that I'm accustomed to. The Bo La Lot is not to be missed!

I came here for the first time with my sister for dinner because she had been telling me about it, and I was pretty impressed! We were the only ones there when we arrived (I'd say we got in around 6 PM?), but more people started to come shortly after. The decor and overall atmosphere of the restaurant met my standards; it was clean, nicely lit inside, and there wasn't anything about the place that would blatantly put you off while eating. I will say though, the tables are pretty tiny and I would have liked it if they were a little bigger, so it isn't an ideal place for large groups. As for the service, our server was quick and friendly, but all the servers seemed really nice too. And one more thing to note, the actual restaurant is kind of hidden and they don't really have any big signs outside of it, but it was near an Irish Pub and some boutique shop. Anyways, now onto the important part: the food. First my sister and I ordered drinks because she had a coupon for if you spend $15 or more, you get a free bubble tea or iced coffee, so my sister got a strawberry bubble tea, and I got an iced coffee. Our waiter was nice enough to suggest that we get the bubble tea as the free drink because it cost more than the iced coffee, so I thought that was nice! And just a warning about the iced coffee: if you don't like bitter coffee, get it with condensed milk! I didn't noticed on the menu that they had two options for iced/hot coffee (one with condensed milk, and one without), so I just told the waiter "iced coffee" assuming that it would be sweet. For appetizers, we got one order of Bo Nuong Sot Dat Biet (which are grilled cubed filet mignon w/ house special ginger, watercress and sauce) and one order of Goi Cuon (which is shrimp, pork w/ lettuce, bean sprouts and rice vermicelli wrapped in rice paper and served w/ peanut sauce or fish sauce, but we got it w/o shrimp). I really enjoyed both appetizers; especially the filet mignons. They were so flavorful! The portions for the appetizers were just right! Nothing too heavy, but not too light either. For our entree, my sister and I shared the Banh Xeo (which is a Vietnamese Crepe with crispy rice flour w/ shrimp, pork & bean sprouts and served w/ fresh mint, basil & lime fish sauce, but we got it w/o shrimp). I've never tried anything like it before, but it was pretty good and it's something I'll definitely order again in the future! My only con about this place is that it's kinda pricey for what you get. Our total was $30 for two appetizers, one entree, and the iced coffee. But all in all, I still do really like this place, and I'm looking forward to coming here again!

Just came back from another visit. This place can do no wrong. I ordered my usual #302 bowl of pho. Fragrant, delicious broth. Lots of meat, tendon, tripe, and rice noodles. A full plate of very fresh bean sprouts, basil, jalapeno rings, lime wedges, cilantro, and culantro (yes, culantro!) came on the side, ready to add to my soup. My friend had the #202 banh mi sandwich which was made with pork. I had to beg for a bite because my friend didn't want to share, it was that good. Spotless dining room and bathrooms. Attentive, friendly, knowledgeable waitstaff. Water glasses refilled and dirty plates cleared away without asking. I hope more people find this hidden treasure!

This place is the only restaurant in Naperville that makes me go back over and over again. Based on my experience, it is quite hard to find good Asian (any kind of Asian) restaurant once you are out of Chicago and to the southwest burbs. But, this restaurant is as good as, if not better, those Vietnamese restaurant in New China town in Chicago (Argyle & Broadway area). Ingredients are always fresh, traditional food, good service, clean dining area as well as their bathrooms. Its location is quite convenient to find parking since it is ever so slightly away from CRAZY busy bar area of Naperville downtown. Green Basil quickly became my family's ,friends and my "regular" spot!

My wife and came here the other night because we both wanted Pho. We are glad we did, maybe the best Pho I've ever had. My wife got the calamari and apparently snagged the last order. The calamari is nice and light, it's also very fresh. Perfectly seasoned and very refreshing. We also got an order of the hot wings-asian style. Sweet and spicy sauce and perfectly cooked. However the Pho was the superstar of the meal. It was fantastic. Huge bowl, cooked perfect. We got a plate of jalapenos and bean sprouts as well. Will definitely be going back and nicely priced. It is BYOB, and they do charge a corking fee for beer and wine. Really great food.

I eat a lot of Vietnamese and this was hands down the best restaurant Vietnamese I have had - very authentic down to the fish sauce. Spring rolls, "wonderfully different than your normal" calamari and the fired tofu appetizer was fantastic (crispy, light and airy). Kind of a french bread snob so while perfectly crunchy outside, would like it a bit less "doughy" (but this is a small ding on an otherwise outstanding meal - would still highly recommend the Banh Mi - and plan to partake often).
(4)Tommy C.
I consider myself a Pho connoisseur... actually Pho snob and this place is legit for where its located. Portions are decent, Spring roll are pretty standard (but good). I would recommend this place to anyone that doesn't want to drive all the way to Arglye for a quick fix. I wish the menu had more things to choose from but decent none the less.

Soooo happy to have this restaurant in my neighborhood. Been going there many times and the foods never failed me. Pretty much everything in the menu are good. Sticky wings, fried tofu, pho, porkchop....mannnnn, I'm hungry now!!!

Tucked away off the street, what a gem! Very quiet, clean, cozy atmosphere. BYOB! Staff was very prompt & helpful. Egg rolls were delicious. Pho was tasty - the "fixings" came out a little slim (need more basil!) but staff was right there to bring more. We will definitely be back!

This place is hidden behind a Nail/Hair salon in downtown Naperville, Studio 10. I actually went to do my nails and heard the nail lady tell me how the vietnamese restaurant was pretty good. I work around the area but never got a chance to check it out. I honestly think this place is overpriced for vietnamese food. I mean $5.50 for spring rolls? I get 6 small pieces that are chopped up. That surprised me, usually I'm given 2 fat rolls of springrolls. I was used to that. And used to paying $3.75 for spring rolls. The presentations were well presented. I feel this place is catered to the people of Naperville..Americanized. Sorry I'm asian, and when you go to authentic asian places you don't get fancy presentation, you get food and lots of it. Pho was ok. I've had better. Good Pho is Vietnamese town, Chicago. I see that people have reviewed under here the PHO is good, but honestly Pho is my favorite food and I'm a critic. I've had many types and kinds. So there is a specific taste I look for. The best way to taste pho is before you put anything in. It should not be too sweet, it should not be overwhelmed with Anise (The smelly star stuff), it should be salty enough, good pho is pho you don't have to add too much things in. I need fish sauce, lime, hoison, oyster sauce...this pho was tasteless, not salty enough....they had no fish sauce so i couldnt make it salty...and I don't like putting table salt in my pho...only when you are making the broth. I ordered the Bun Thit, which is grilled pork on vermicelli, it was presented in a odd way, on a plate? Where I am used to a bowl where you mix and eat as a salad, I felt I had to tear lettuce, wrap up the ingredients and eat it as a wrap. It was good, but it was overpriced, $12.....decent bun price should be about 8-9 bucks. I would go again. But I'm going to check it out for lunch instead of dinner. It'll be cheaper.

Great lunch experience! Papaya salad had lots of fresh shrimp for a perfect appetizer to share. Waitress recommended the pork belly sandwich and it was excellent. Took a few to go for the kids who also loved them. Will be coming back soon with a bottle of wine for dinner!

The food here is great. I've been there 3 times and each time the food gets better. oh and another bonus is that it is byob. The only problem is trying to figure out how to fit this into my weekly schedule...

We have been back to Green Basil several times, for both lunch and dinner. The service is excellent and the food is also terrific. My husband always orders the Pho Ga and loves it. The broth in the Pho is excellent. The serving size is great, and everything in the soup is wonderful. I have tried a variety of dishes. I love the shrimp dish with the pineapple, as well as the fried rice. Very tasty. Last time, I had the roast pork Bahn Mi sandwich, and I really loved the flavors. I definitely recommend this restaurant and hope people will frequent it. It offers wonderful food with great value in a very nice setting.

This is the best place for pho that Ive found in the area. Its located in an awkward area so its easy to miss. It is worth finding though. It is byob and the prices are great. If you have never eaten pho before dont be afraid to ask how to prepare yours. i like mine spicy so I add everything.

I am not one to complain about food, and usually give the chef the benefit of the doubt, but I have to say I was completely disappointed in my experience at this restaurant. My friend and I stopped by for lunch, and I was impressed with the atmosphere and decor. Unfortunately, things quickly turned when our waiter, Fred, took us to our table. Fred's customer service skills need some work. After he would leave our table, my friend and I would exchange comments about how awkward we felt due to the demeanor of the waiter. As for the drinks/food, it was a hot day in the burbs so I decided to order a watermelon smoothie. It was delivered half melted. While the flavor was decent, it was like sipping watermelon flavored water. We ordered the egg rolls for an appetizer, which were good but underwhelming. Unfortunately, I cannot remember the name or number of my entree. It was a dish that included shrimp and pork over vermicelli noodles (I think 402 or 403). The dish was poorly conceptualized and executed. The portion was probably 1/8 shrimp/pork and 7/8 noodles. The shrimp was surprisingly bland and overcooked and the small cuts of pork provided were mostly fatty sections. I am not an expert on vermicelli noodles, but I know what an overcooked noodle looks and tastes like. Having only chopsticks to forge through this dish, I was forced to actually pry the heaping pile of noodles apart with my fingers in order to eat them, and the rubbery texture and taste made me douse the noodles in the sauces--the best part of the entire meal--that are bottled on the table (and again, majority of this meal was vermicelli noodles). I was contemplating saying something to Fred when the chef actually came to our table to ask how things were. As I mentioned, I am not one to complain about food, so this opportunity made me a bit anxious. My friend helped me out by asking how I was supposed to eat the noodles, as I showed the chef how the noodles were clumped together. He replied that most people eat this dish in lettuce wraps. On the opposite side of my plate was a single piece of lettuce with some julienned vegetables (the same items that accompanied the egg roll plate). Unfortunately, lettuce cannot save overcooked noodles; furthermore, I questioned the concept of the dish moreso as the single piece of lettuce barely fit a quarter of the noodles I was provided with. Overall, this experience was one of the worst I have ever had at a restaurant (I am not exaggerating), but I would return. My friends dish looked and tasted great, plus it was a balanced portion of meat, noodles (his were cooked right), and vegetables. Unfortunately, I happened to pick a dish that failed in concept and execution.

VERY SLOW SERVICE! #303 Pho was okay, but don't ask for extra meat. Waste of $2. Sticky Chicken were undercooked.

Our friends introduced us recently and we have enjoyed this place tremendously. Our family is Chinese, so that is our perspective. We make sure to order the pho. It comes in many varieties. The broth is very well done compared to other places with soup noodles. The pho portions are good sized, so you may want to share family style. The crispy egg rolls, which are some of the best egg rolls that we have had in many east and southeast Asian restaurants. Dish SP is a fried Vietnamese crepe with a tasty filling.

Good Vietnamese food in downtown Naperville! Ingredients are fresh and dishes are very tasty. I loved everything I've ordered (spring roll, calamari, and 3 or 4 or the entrees.) Service is friendly and the interior decor is pleasant. The location is a bit tricky but I think they will develop a following and do well. In fact, they already seem to have a following. Located in the Jefferson Hill building (same building as Quigley's Pub) around the side of the building. Park across the street in the garage or at Central Park behind the building. BYOB.
(4)Tina F.
The pho soups at Green Basil are wonderful. Aromatic broth with delicious fresh ingredients. The fresh rolls with tofu are also delicious. Had a tofu dish on the menu that was just OK. Love the food but the service leaves something to be desired. I think they need many more waiters than they have as the young waitstaff always seems overwhelmed and frazzled and it can take forever to get someones attention. I recommend this place because the soups are wonderful. But be prepared to deal with pretty poor service.

I am so glad to have found this little gem of a restaurant. I was referred to this place by a few family members and ended up taking my wife there for dinner on a Wednesday evening. The place is a bit hard to find, but food is authentic, the ingredients are fresh, and the restaurant is clean. We ordered the calamari appetizer, and we both got the pho dac biet (house special) for our main entree - both were very delicious. We will be back again.

My visit to green basil was outstanding! The service from my server was very pleasing and the food (com ga) was amazing. I cannot wait to go back!

Amazing fresh and delicious food. The place looks great. Food is very good and fresh. Calamari was very good and I am not usually a fan of calamari. This I could eat. Also my entree was amazing and a huge potion. Already planning when I can come again.

Amazing food there was so much flavor and complexity to the dishes, my wife and I had our first go of Vietnamese food here and will defiantly be back with friends and family.

Thank you for opening this restaurant in Naperville!! I recently moved from the city and was looking for a good bowl of pho. I Am so happy to say I've found it. BYOB is awesome too. I'll be back often and wish you much success!

Saw the Groupon online today and decided to give this place a try. Boy, I was not disappointed at all. As a matter of fact, this is hands down one of my favorite new places to eat. I'm a huge fan of Pho, and this place really delivers the goods. Also had the Goi Cuon, and the Banh Hoi Tom Thit. All the ingredients for all the dishes were fresh and delicious. If you love Vietnamese, you'll want to add this place to your travels. Not kidding. (Servers were also very friendly and the atmosphere was warm and homey).

This place rocks!!! I'm Vietnamese and super picky about eating Vietnamese food out because I think I can make it better. I love love ordering the chicken curry for pick up. Taste just as good as my mom's and better than what I can make. You get big chunks of carrots and enough potatoes to satisfy. The flavor is incredible. I'm use to the dark meat being on the bone, cause that is how I grew up eating it, but I understand how some people cannot eat it like us locals. I always get it with french bread, side of pho noodles (be prepared to pay $1) , side veggies fixings that usually comes on the sandwiches (I greatly appreciate not being charged for this) the diakon and carrots are pickled perfectly, tons of fresh cilantro, cucumber and jalapeno peppers. For lunch I will use the fresh, warm, crispy french bread, the chicken meat and make a sandwich with it with all the sandwich fixings. Then for dinner I will use the broth, the rest of the chicken that did not fit on my sandwich, carrots, potatoes and pho noodles for a too die for chicken curry noodle dish. Make sure you get the pho noodles, the texture goes great with the curry broth. I use up my husbands jalapeno slices and add just a touch of fish sauce to make my noodle soup perfect. My husband appreciates the flavors as is since he is not into making it too spicy and the fish sauce is too much sodium for his taste, but it adds that unami flavor that makes my dish perfect. My husband appreciates my thriftiness. I hope Green Basil is around for a long time.

We're very excited to have a solid Vietnamese option Naperville! Our sticky wings, Pho Ga, and pork w/ vermicelli noodles (sorry, can't remember the name) were all very tasty. Looking forward to exploring more of the menu.
(4)Beth J.
I do love this place, and the owner is wonderful. However, recently, they have been overfrying my food. If they fix that, it will be back to wonderful. Great chicken wings, chicken pho, bun and tofu dishes!
(4)Anthony M.
So glad I found this place on Yelp it was absolutely incredible. First with the interior and exterior was very unique and I already knew the food had to be good! I ordered the sandwich with chicken in it (don't remember the exact name) and it was amazing just all the flavors were so good and the bread was nice and extra crunchy! This is a great place to have a quick lunch if you're in the area, or if you want to satisfy your pho craving! Anyways not much to say on this place, but I am definitely coming back!
(4)Andi B.
Groupon brought us here, and we will definitely be back. YUM!!! Everything tasted very fresh and full of flavor.
(5)Guy K.
Great service and reasonable prices. I really enjoyed the food and selection. The only thing I wouldn't suggest is the Vietnamese Crepe.
(4)K B.
3.5 star dinner review. This place is a keeper, if you can find it. Just FYI, it's along the right side of the building when you are facing it, toward the back. Also, BYOW. It's nice decor, and because it's off the beaten path, for a Friday night it wasn't busy at all, so not much noise. On to the food, had the calamari, and it was really bland, wouldn't get again. But we both had vermicelli dishes and both were excellent.

It's about time! Been looking for a good Viet place in the area with no luck. Then BOOM...this place comes out of nowhere and is GREAT. It's a little hard to find, tucked around the corner and off the beaten path a bit. It's a lot nicer on the inside than the Vietnamese places I usually frequent. Had the spring rolls and the egg rolls. Both were very good...edge to the spring rolls. My buddy had the Pho Bac Biet and raved. I had the Bun noodles with grilled pork and it was great. My picky kids even shared a beef and noodle dish and were pretty happy - though they had to have a side of rice to calm them down. Finally...I indulged in a smoothie with tapioca. If you've never tried an avocado (yes avocado) smoothie try it! Can't be good for you, but sooooo good. All in all...highly recommended. Will be back - A lot. A refreshing alternative in the franchise/chain restaurant hell that is Naperville.

Went here for the first time and ordered the beef pho soup with rare thin beef, tripe, and tendons. Service here was no bueno the place wasn't really all that busy but it took us a good while until someone seated us. The waiter's weren't any better. It took them even longer to take our orders and the arrival of our food was even longer than waiting to be seated and getting the waiter to take our orders combined. They need better management skills it was like watching a chicken with it's head cut off. The soup's broth was good and flavorful, the noodles were fine and they gave plenty of rare slices of beef but the tripe and tendons were another story. I had large hard chucks of tendons in my bowl that I couldn't eat and the tripe looked liked they were cut by a preschooler with safety scissors they were way to thick to be edible. I ended up scooping most of them out on a plate. The add on's were fine like the fresh bean sprout and basil. All in all I would not come here again. I had better pho in Chicago with better service for half the price. Honestly. I have no idea why this place has such good reviews because the food here was not all that great and the service seriously lacked. The reason I came here was because of the reviews on yelp. I think people need to carefully consider the rating system before they give a five star rating to a place because people like me end up having high expectations for a place only to find out that what a disappointment it was.
(2)Guy M.
I have been here twice and have mixed feelings. The food is excellent. The grilled pork vermicelli (one of my favorite dishes in the world) is wonderful. However... the service is just abysmal, and I'm not a snob when it comes to service. The second time I came here it was just shocking. The place wasn't even busy but about half the tables had dirty dishes that the staff never bothered to clear. Some things that we ordered never showed up. When our food finally arrived, the waitress set the food down and literally ran away. That was probably close to a year ago. Perhaps the service has improved since then; I don't know. I figure that the service will either improve or the place will go out of business, maybe I'll try it again in about a year, because the food really is good.
(3)Anna A.
The place was pretty empty on a Saturday evening, which was too bad, because it was delicious! The food was really fresh and was something new and fun to try. Perhaps it was just a bit too far from the main drag in Naperville, but I'd highly recommend checking this place out.
(5)Catherine S.
I went here for lunch with a friend after a quick workout at the YMCA (you can walk over). The restaurant was a nice setting and very clean. I was very excited to try out a Vietnamese restaurant close by. I tried the banh mi and it was delicious! My friend is vegetarian and she tried the eggplant dish which was also delicious. The wait staff was a little shy but friendly and nice. Will definitely return soon!
(5)Don L.
This place takes a little effort to find since they are located on the side of the building they share with another pub/restaurant and a salon. But if you're looking for decent pho in the suburbs, you know it ain't easy. So I guess the hard to find location is par for the course! The restaurant itself was very nicely decorated, a very fresh and springy feel, which I guess goes with the name. We were there on a weekday night around 5 PM so there was only 1 other table occupied and the server was very attentive. Our group consisted of my son (9 yrs old), my wife and myself. We started with the shrimp & pork spring rolls, which were decent, nothing special. For our entrees, we all ordered the beef pho. The portions were pretty generous, which is good considering the prices. The flavor of the broth was decent, but maybe a touch on the sweet side for me. Of course, I'm comparing restaurant pho to what my Mom makes, so that's probably an unfair comparison! All in all, we would probably return as it's the best we've found in the suburbs, if not a little pricey. But I chalk that up to the downtown location.
(3)M K.
Finally, a very good Vietnamese restaurant within reasonable driving distance! Green Basil serves fresh, excellently prepared dishes and soups. I have eaten here several times and have tried several items on the menu. All have been well prepared, tasty, authentic, and using fresh vegetables. The cuisine here is all in all very healthy and in these hot summer days, you will feel refreshed, not bloated and sleepy after your meal. This is an excellent place to try Vietnamese food and if you do not eat beef, no worries, they have excellent chicken Pho as well as several dishes with pork and seafood.
(5)Sandra G.
The location of this restaurant is not easy to find. Firstly when I came to this place, I am not really sure whether they really serve a good authentic food or not. But, when I eat their food... WOW... it's very good.. the food is very fresh and tasty, they also using a good quality . I am very happy to know that they have a good Vietnamese restaurant in Suburb, so I don't have to go to Broadway. I think they server better food compare with any restaurant in Broadway. The prices a little bit more expensive compare with Vietnamese in Broadway but I think they can justify by serving better quality food . Bottom line: VERY GOOD FOOD, highly recommended Vietnamese Restaurant. Certainly, they are in my list of restaurant to go.
