I love this place. It has a definite old school, unpretentious feel, and has a lovely view of Diamond Lake right across street. The waitress that helped us was sweet and friendly, and the $3 Sunday bloody mary special was just what the doctor ordered. My fiancé and I ordered a half slab of ribs, french fried shrimp, and we both added the unlimited salad bar to our meal for only $1.99 extra. The half slab of ribs was very large, and we were pleasantly surprised! There was so much food that I felt like I would explode. The salad bar alone is filling enough for a meal. No, it's not the fanciest place with the fanciest and most amazing food ever, but it's charming, and comes with friendly service and an awesome view! It felt old school romantic to me inside, and very relaxing (we went on a Sunday afternoon). We didn't feel rushed at all, and just enjoyed our drinks, food, and the view. Beautiful spot to grab a drink with the one you love or friends, grab a lunch special, and gaze out on Diamond Lake from either inside, or the outside patio.

Note - for those of you fortunate enough to have eaten at the original Gale Street Inn in Jefferson Park, this is not the same nor I think associated with at all. This is an average restaurant all around - think geriatric crowd and1970's salad bar with iceberg lettuce, bacon bits and creamy dressing options. I want to like this place because there are limited options in this area but worth driving a bit further for better options. Not cheap either.

So, my friend and I were shopping in Mundelein on a late Friday afternoon. We've tacitlly agreed that we would like to patronize local businesses, about every other dinner out. This establishment popped up on my phone (internet), and she said it had an old-time (in a good way) salad bar, with liver pate' and bean salad, which we grew up with. We arrived just before 6:00 pm, and were seated immediately. The ambience is like a dinner club from the 60's, 70's or maybe the 80's. We noticed a fairly large outside dining area after being seated, but chose to stay inside, because it was bordering on chilly out there. The menu is limited, and I debated between ordering an shrimp appetizer plus the soup and salad bar, but settled on the whitefish, because it had been a long while since I had it. My friend decided to have the same plus salad bar. She wasn't disappointed with the salad bar, but the whitefish was a little boney (which is typical, and I'm not criticisizing it.) I had a reasonably priced glass of wine, too. The baked potato was baked perfectly. The fish was ok. As was the service. (I won't go into it; I believe it was a training and timing issue . . . or maybe the server was having less than a stellar day.) So, my friend has said that the Ribs are great here, so I might return and try those when I have a taste for them and am just not up to making them myself. I most likely won't recommend this restaurant, unless the person asking wants to sit outside close enough to a lake to see it with a farily decent appetizer menu and drinks AND wants to dine local.

Yeah, I think "Meh" pretty much describes this place. I do not know what all the fuss is about. This restaurant reminds of the HORRIBLE Dovers Straits in its mediocrity. Their is no "ambience" about this place other than as a dark and dingy dive struggling for some tendril of authenticity. It looks like a bank from the outside. Inside it is dark and the aforementioned dingy. I thought the service was ok but bordering on bad (the waitress was not the nicest and most helpful) though we did get our food relatively quickly. The food was ok but again nothing to write home about...We ordered the "world famous" ribs and I definitely have had better...The meat was falling off the bone yeah but the taste of the sauce and the meat itself was plain and uninspired. The portions were tiny and the fries were tasteless. Admittedly, my wife did like the ribs (though again did not think they were the best) and almost everyone else just thought it was ok. Unless I am dragged here again I will not be returning and I do not recommend it. P.S. The view of the lake is across the lake and through a fence...ugh...

Cold. Dry. Overcooked. Slow. There is no excuse for this at 2:30 in the afternoon. You can't survive on the glitz and reputation of 20 years ago.

Ribs were good. The deck was nice, but it had a "supper club" feel to it. Perhaps it was because it was a Sunday night or just the age mix of the evening we were there.

Gale Street Inn in Diamond Lake (Mundelein, technically I guess) does have really good ribs. I've had excellent NY strip steaks here too. I've also had just average ones. I agree their side dishes aren't so great, and YES the au gratin is...bland? Is that the word? Their appetizers are pretty good, the baked clams. Don't see it on the menu but seems to me, they used to have good crab stuffed mushrooms...hmmm... The salad bar (which they charge extra for) is really good. They have chicken liver pate and just enough cold, fresh salad fixin's to make it worth while. We drive up fro Arl Hts. I used to live not too far from the one on Milwaukee Ave in Chicago, I like the Diamond Lake one better. One thing I will say, sometimes you get a bad or crabby server. When that happens, it ruins the night. This has happened a couple of times to us. If it ever happens again we will either walk out, or ask for another server. I think if you ask for another, you're asking for trouble. They need to weed out the bad servers from their employment.

I had my wedding shower at Gale Street Inn. The food and table set up was good! However, the service left something to be desired. Guests had to ask several times for water refills. Also no one ever took soda orders and the dinner rolls weren't brought out until after our food was served. When I've eaten there in the past the service was better, but for the larger group of people service was lacking.

Avoid this restaurant at all costs. The worst quality of food in recent memory. Worst ribs, worst seafood, and even worse salad bar. Do yourself a favor and try to take a match to it

Another example of a VERY dated way of dining that is fading as this generation fades as well. There is not a single healthy thing on the menu, even the salad bar is nasty. Salad bar was very poorly stocked with mostly stale and canned items, it's a very limited salad bar. There is absolutely nothing vegetarian on the menu, not even a soup. I will not be returning to this place, it's not from this decade, last or even 4 decades ago. This place lacks fresh vegetables, fruit or anything that will keep you healthy. The menu is strictly meat and nothing but the most unhealthy items which are sure to get you a quadruple bipass and open heart surgery in a hurry. Left hungry from Gale street and got some fresh dinner at the Pita Inn. Largely empty parking lot, stinks of stale beer when you walk past the bar. They must be making it with alcohol sales as the dining room only had a few tables of folks, this is a large place. Nothing against the people who eat here, it's just really unhealthy and dated and not somewhere I would ever return.

Old School Supper Club is what the Gale Street Inn is all about. Prime Rib, Great Steaks and Ribs. The servers are professionals who know how to do their job. Not kids who think you owe them 20 percent no matter what. This new years trip had we had my dad, my wife, my youngest daughter and myself. Dad had ribs, and stuffed shrimp he loved them. My wife had the prime rib she really loved it. My Daughter the shrimp, ate all of the, but she liked the stuffed shrimp more. My self a nice steak perfectly cooked. The scallop potatoes is a must get. With all the good here is the disappointments, bread a little stale, breaded shrimp your standard supper club frozen, salad bar a little messy. But at an average dinner of $27.00 a plate which included drinks and salad bar the value by todays standards is good. To note our waitress was Kathy and she was great.

I've been going to this place since it was across the street on the Lake. It was alot more lively back then. The food is still pretty solid for the most part. The owner is really nice. I like the salad bar and the cheap prices at the bar. Also they serve up a couple micro brews from some of the locals, which I think is pretty cool. My father and I regularly come here at least 1-2 times a month.

Sitting out in the patio! Not much to look at but nice to be outside. Eating the nightly special of white fish. Nice and light. Salad bar and ice tea. Yum. Mark had prime rib -a little over cooked and fatty. Waitress let us take veggies from salad bar to sauté rather than have the al gratin side.

Come on now... you cannot pass off fishsticks as calamari. Nobody will fall for this. At least the view is really nice - you do get two stars for the nice view of the lake.

Good place for great ribs! Went with family to the new location across the street from the original spot. Have not been there in over 16 years and it did not disappoint. I currently live in California and it ranks closely to some great restaurants there. Will definitely be back! 11/22/11

I'm pretty bummed out. I had fond memories of this restaurant when it used to be located directly across the street. My family and I would always dine here when I was a youngster and back then, the food was pretty awesome. You could count on this place for a juicy steak and fresh seafood. I was in the burbs to visit my mom, so she suggested we give this old favorite another whirl as it has been years. Clearly, things are not the same. As it was 90 degrees out and we sat outside and I wasn't in the mood for anything heavy. It was lunchtime so I was hoping for a nice sandwich menu. The portion designated for sandwiches (if you could even call it that), was pretty dismal. The food that arrived was bland and worse than something I could make myself. My mom ordered a turkey sandwich with cheese, lettuce and mayo. We assumed they would get a little more creative than slapping all ingredients together between a bun and charging $9 for it. I never have high expectations from a grilled chicken sandwich, but mine was overcooked, dry and flavorless. The calamari we received for an appetizer had wilted lettuce under it. If the waiter had come around to ask us how things were within 15 minutes of us receiving our meal, they could have had a chance to redeem themselves. I feel bad saying this, but if you can't get the basics right, how do your steaks and seafood taste? It's a shame when an old favorite has clearly changed.

We had our wedding rehearsal dinner here last weekend, and basically chose it due to proximity to the church & hotel... also, for the RIBS! I would recommend eating here in a smaller party, and not with a large group like we did. There isn't really a separate room for private parties, just a slightly partitioned space that is still open to the main dining room... and right by the salad bar. The seating was odd with the 40 people we had, but I suppose they did what they had to so the room would work with our group. The food was just fine, but the definite stand-outs were the Ribs & Prime Rib - yum! We were also pleasantly surprised by the Salmon - it was a HUGE piece that was cooked to perfection with fantastic flavor. Definitely a quaint place that was very easy to work with and incredibly reasonably priced for dealing with such a large group. Thanks for making our rehearsal dinner a great one!

I heard there was a Gale Street inn in this neck of the woods and I was pumped. I haven't been to Gale Street in Chicago for alot of years now and this place is by my mothers house ,so I took her for her birthday. I can't say it was bad , but I was really disappointed. I guess it's been so long since I ate there , and I've tried so many really good places since then that GSI just doesn't seem to pop as it once did. It is a nice looking place , but is lacking a bit of the class that the Chicago location has , but for this neck of the woods (literally) , it was nice enough. The help there couldn't have been nicer and more helpful. The selection was pretty basic : grilled meats , ribs , a little fish and a little pasta. We ordered the burger , it was a custom order , and they nailed it. I personally didn't taste it but my son said it was good and it looked really good. The adults started with the baked clams , which were pretty good , if not a bit overcooked , just a tad. The onion soup looked good as well and my wife seemed to like it. My mother liked the fried chicken and I really liked the lobster and ribs , but the ribs were a bit more tender than I would prefer. I was hugely disappointed with the au gratin potato's , though for the life of me I can't say what they were missing. Is this a good place , yes. Would I have any objections to coming back , no. Would I take any sort of real effort to try to get back here , probably not.

Impressive looking restaurant, although they should hire more people. it was kinda crowded and they only had one bartender. Not my kind of place as it looks expensive to eat. It is classy fancy place with a bar and restaurant section. the bartender was not friendly and paid more attention to a group of female, which i can't blame him. they invest alot in furniture, fireplaces, wood floors. they need to spend more on TVs as there were not many big screen to watch football. I know there is another location, but i don't know if this is a corporate place.

It was a Saturday afternoon and we had just visited the Strawberry Fest In Long Grove. My honey was hungry. I disuaded her from the fest stuff ( to put it nicely) and said, I know a place by a lake. She was WOWWED!! We got to Gale St about 4:00PM. We asked if we could sit outside, but it was reserved for a party. But the view inside was great. It was empty, but we had EXCELLENT service. I've been going to Gale St since it was a small bar and restaurant in the 60's to its expansion in the city. Then a split and off to Mundelein, right by the shore. Then across the street. It is stil GOOD! I had the Prime Rib special, medium rare. My honey had 1/2 slab ribs. She asked for them sans sauce, on the side. I know they par boil their ribs. Most all chicagoans RUIN their ribs this way. They remember their mothers saying you got to really cook PORK. They also bought spare ribs or St Louis ribs SKIN ON, which MUST be removed to make them fall off the bone. Well, sans sauce did not look too good to me, but my darling loved them. She could't finish a half slab! She just drizzled their great sauce on very conservatively.... They did fall off the bone. I am a smoke man, low and slow. That's me. Gale St is about food, but also about ambiance, and scenery. It is not a "stuffy" place. Good people, good food. In memory of George,

It's my understanding that the family who owned the original Gale Street Inn in Chicago sold that restaurant to a new owner, moved up to the 'burbs, and opened up this restaurant. The ribs are equally delicious up at this location. (Read: Some of the best I've ever had.) The side dishes (e.g. french fries) and the rest of the menu are different, though. This restaurant sits right on Diamond Lake, so the view's a pleasant one.
