We've lived in Mundelein for 3+ years and heard rave reviews of this place. The first time we tried to come was about a year ago on a weekend evening and they were closed. They have weird hours so be sure to check that out. Today was the second time we tried. After checking the hours to be sure they were open we headed over. When we walked in we were not greeted, welcomed or have anyone say hello. It appeared you were to order and then take your own seat, but no one directed us, nor were their any signs saying so. The women behind the counter looked annoyed that we didn't know what we wanted to eat. The menu is large and there are many choices. While reading the menu we noticed a part that said 'Family friendly, yes. Children's playground, no. Keep your children seated and reasonably quiet' While this seems like common sense, it was very off putting as we stood there holding our two year old. I suddenly felt like we were not welcome with our kid. Okay on to ordering. Everything is a la cart. I ordered the Turkey Club, fries and a drink, my husband ordered the Philly cheese steak, curly fries and a drink and we got the kids Mac N Cheese. Our bill was $30!!! Pretty expensive for just a couple sandwiches. Also, they charged us $1 'service fee' for using our debit card. Seriously!? It took about 10-15 minutes to get our sandwiches. The same girl who took our order delivered our food, still no smile or any sort of friendliness at all. My turkey club was good, I had no complaints, the Mac and cheese was fine for a kids meal (I should point out the kids meal comes with nothing but the entree. No side or drinks) My husband said his cheese steak wasn't good. He said it was greasy and crumbly. After we were finished he went to ask for a to-go box and was directed to a coffee cart they were under, in a lecturing manner as if he should have known. All in all, the food was mediocre, but the off putting sign about kids, the unfriendly service and high prices will keep us from ever returning. Seriously, how hard is it to smile and be friendly??? Good customer service goes a long way!!!

Understaffed. Went there early on a Sunday with my family and the line to order was 4 people deep but took 15 minutes. The wait for the food was at least 25 minutes. We bussed our own table. Enough said Average. The food was nothing original or inventive. The taste was nothing you can't get at any other dive in the area. Will we be back? No. Should you eat here? Probably not.

A surcharge on credit card charges? I haven't seen that in a while but the negative reinforcement did get me to use cash. Oddly designed entryway in which you immediately feel constrained and can't really see the sitting area and no signs directing me what to do. Yes I am married so should be able to read minds but a simple "Order at counter before sitting" would alleviate some confusion. Adding to the angst is the myriad selections on the menu. Wow! Awesome! But a bit overwhelming when you are already confused as to what you are doing (these are all clearly first visit issues). The dining area seemed slightly dirty. Like it had not been cleaned thoroughly in a while. Evidenced by a mystery stain on the floor i front of the ladies room. Oh and no AC?! Food you ask? Chicken noodle soup - please provide a disclaimer that this contains 500% of my salt intake for the day BLT- yea!!! Awesome job!! House made chips- great job hot and crispy chicken and Bacon wrap - the bread is a bit thick. Curly fries - pretty tasty Location can't be beat if your kids love trains!!!

Fun little place! If you're looking for a quick, casual meal that tastes delicious this is the perfect spot. When you enter, there's a counter with the menu where you order. You get a number then grab your drinks and take a seat. It was busy but not crowded. The booths were surprisingly comfortable. It was only a few minutes before our food came and it looked really good. I couldn't resist trying Ben's biscuits and gravy first because it looked so good. It did not disappoint! The biscuit was fluffy and tasted homemade and the gravy was really tasty! My thick French toast was great. It was cooked well and was served with a yummy cinnamon butter. My only complaint is they don't serve real syrup they only have the kind served in the individual plastic container. Overall, we enjoyed eating here and will definitely go back!

This is the best place evaaahhhh! I'm "carb intolerant" and they happily make changes to meet my needs. Example: I love love their hollandaise sauce, it's to die for. I'll order a "bunless" eggs Benedict. They don't mind at all! I personally Love the club Benedict & would recomend it. Also, here I sit waiting for my Chicken, avacado, bacon (Un) wrap!! Delish!

I love themed mom and pop diners and Caboose def fit the bill as I was passing through the area a couple weeks ago and decided to venture in. The following review is based on breakfast only. I would def love the chance to come back and try the lunch menu items. Came, saw and nearly concurred the gravy train wreck. Eggs and hash browns were delicious and perfectly cooked. Slight points off for the gravy itself.....it was good texture and flavor, above average for sure. But I've had some darn good biscuits and gravy in my day and this one wasn't as memorable as others. However, if I lived close this would be my go to diner and breakfast spot for sure. Prices are more than reasonable so skip the fast food crap, IHOP, Denny's etc and just come straight here if you're in the area.

This is a great place for breakfast or lunch. My family came here on a whim because we wanted to try some places in the area that we have not eaten at. I went in expecting it to be just ok. I was surprised it was pretty good. We shared the French toast, veggie eggs Benedict, and the chipotle barbecue chicken wrap. All were solid and I have to say that we all liked the food. My daughter was disappointed that they don't have pancakes but hey, we can go to Walker Bros. for that. Good food at a good price.

I gave this place a few chances. Customer service is fine, the atmosphere is just alright but the food isn't good. It's average at best.

We found this place about 6 months ago with the help of Yelp ratings decided to give it a try. The food never disappoints. My favorite is steak and portabello wrap. So juicy and so good! I try to order something different every time I come and Everything is good!

My boyfriend and I came her on a tuesday morning and were a little confused upon entry. We didn't know if we should sit down, or order at the counter, but we figured it out and ordered at the counter. I got a omelette with ham avocado and swiss and it was very good. Lots of cheese which I really liked. My boyfriend ordered the corn beef hash attack with cheese sauce. He was blown away by it, he kept saying this was one of the best breakfasts he's had in a while. He compared the flavors of the hash with cheese to a frozen chicken cordon bleu. Overall we were very pleased, but the only downside to this place is the no waiter service and no very clear instructions on what your suppose to do. We didn't know if we should go up and get our food or if they would bring it to us. But the food was great and the price was cheap! We will be returning soon!

  • Mike R.

The food is very good. Lunch wraps can be a little pricey, especially with a side and drink (and they charge an extra $1 if you don't have cash) but I can't knock the taste.

Super yummy! Cute little place with a ton of options. Sweet potato fries were awesome.

My favorite breakfast place so close to home! I've even began ordering food on the weekdays before work. I have to be honest, I love eggs Benedict and they have a full variety of that on their menu so if you're not into that, well you're outta luck. Try the cubed potatoes with onions, they're amazing!

Order up front then they bring it to you. Came here for a late breakfast/lunch. The piled high turkey sandwich on texas toast was fresh and filling. Friendly and clean, we will be back.

Walk in place your order and have a seat, they'll bring it out to you. I ordered the Buffalo Chicken Wrap and it was phenomenal, the presentation was great and the staff is very friendly. The menu is also quite large so you'll easily find something you like. The place is covered in Caboose train cars and it also sits near the rail road tracks with the old timey music its almost like being in a real caboose on the rails. I plan on coming again for breakfast Which is served, Mon-fri 7-11am Sat-Sun 7-2pm

This is my go-to lunch spot with my wife and son every Wednesday. The food is great and the location is great too. My son loves to watch the Metra trains go by out the large picture windows. They have very good sandwiches and burgers. I have not had a bad experience there yet. Usually we eat in the restaurant, but it's great for take out too. We have called ahead and picked up for dinner when in a rush.

Love everything on the menu. Feels like down home cooking. The best biscuits and gravy I can find around Mundelein. Service is friendly and fast:

Let me start off by saying this place is not what I expected. This is a train themed Resturant by train tracks. Seems good for the kids of all ages. When you walk in, there is a counter you order at. This threw me off from the Resturant vibe. The person taking my order was nice. After your order is placed you can go sit down. Here is where stars were taken away. I ordered a coffee but there was no silverware, or cream or sugar. The waitress was a very nice teenaged girl. Sadly when I asked for silverware and cream and sugar, I got a knife and fork, 2 creams ands sweet+ packet. Strike one and two. The food came out within 10 minutes or so. I ordered a train wreck which is biscuits and gravy with some hash browns. This is what made the trip. Great sausage gravy. Good mix of meat and a very savory flavor. The coffee was meh So all in all come for the food.

1st time yelp has led me wrong..really $30.00 and everything is extra so then it's says kids meals that's only the sandwich and no trains running or even allot to trains more just pictures we've been to much better train places. Very cold and unfriendly!

The Caboose is at the end of the line, but this Caboose is at the forefront for local casual cuisine. We have tried everything on the breakfast menu. It is all fantastic. It is a family place so it can get a bit loud at family dinner time. On Sundays the church crowd starts packing the train about 9:30, but it's worth the wait unless you are on a tight schedule. It all tastes great to go!! Great to have friendly and fun locals running such a great business. Just a warning, if you're going to brave "The Gravy Trainwreck" - bring a friend.

  • Christopher V.

This place isn't worth visiting. There's nothing really noteworthy here. Frankly, I'm puzzled by the positive reviews. The staff is friendly enough, but you don't deal with them much except when you order. The food is subpar. The place itself is nothing special, bordering on somewhat gross. I appreciate the idea of a local spot that is sort of quaint, but there are plenty of better places in the area for that with better food.

  • Dylan M.

Bought a groupon and was glad I did. It's one of those places I have driven by many times but never stopped. It's a casual local place that you order at the counter and then they bring into your table. The food was very good using fresh ingredients and well prepared. The staff was super nice. Ill be back.

I have been wanting to check this place out and I am so glad I finally did. It is an awesome little sandwich, wrap and salad place. I went here with my mom and we ordered a taco salad and chicken bacon wrap. It took both if us to eat just the taco salad and we were stuffed. Somehow, we made room for a side of onion rings and I am glad we do because they were amazing and not overly greasy. I will definitely be back. And next time I will know how huge then portions are! The service was prompt and friendly as well!

Went here one week and loved the food. I came back the following week and brought a couple friends from our breakfast club who also loved the food. I almost always get an omelette whenever I go out for breakfast, and this place makes one of the best omelettes I've ever had. It was large with lots of the ingredients I ordered. One friend had the skillet and said it was 4.9/5 stars. Another friend had the gravy train wreck and wiped the plate clean. The prices were a little steep though. Over $11 for a 4 ingredient omelettee and a cup of coffee. And that does not include toast or pancakes. I'm used to paying less than that and having pancakes included. This is not your typical diner as you order at the counter and the menu is written on a large blackboard. typical junky silverware though. It had a nice railroad theme to it and I also liked the music they played. They have great comfort food. You would think a place like this would be packed on a Saturday but they weren't. Maybe their prices have something to do with it.

My son and I come to the Caboose at least once per month. The food is reasonably priced, served well and the decor is fun. The owners and their team are friendly and cordial, they make it a point to make your feel welcome and at home.

The Caboose offers a variety of cuisine so that picky eaters and adventurous eaters can enjoy some nice American comfort food in perfect harmony. The moment you walk in, you can instantly feel the "at home" atmosphere. The staff is friendly, the meal is ready within 5 minutes, and the quality is perfection. What's not to like!

My wife and I have been trying to come here for weeks from recommendations from some of her Co workers. Made it in today around 10:30 am. Great time to come as they weren't busy at that time. The food was fantastic! I had the chicken bacon avocado wrap and my wife had biscuits and gravy. I forgot to take pictures before both dishes were quickly devoured but that's only because the food was so great. Very cool atmosphere too. Train themed as you can imagine from the name, our little 3 year old loved it. I would definitely recommend this to everyone!

I give the Decor & concept - 4 stars. But I was not impressed with the food. I went here to have pancakes but they don't even serve pancakes. What?!? So I ended up ordering French toast. I felt they were just OK but I've had better French toast before. So I'm jumping off this train & not heading back to caboose. Choo Choo.

I've been meaning to try out this place for awhile, seeing how highly regarded it is on yelp, and I finally made it there the other day. I decided on one of their many sandwiches: corned beef and swiss on marble rye and it was quite good! I was surprised by the quality of the bread and meat. The rye was super fresh testing and they gave a hefty portion of the meat. A friend of mine also raves about their burgers, so I'll have to give those a try. Plus I hear they are open for breakfast, so that intrigues me as well. Very nice service too. Nice local joint that deserves the patronage.

Breakfast on a train. My wife and I decided to try a new place for breakfast. We were looking at two places and had read reviews about Caboose which received 4.5 stars, so we decided to give them a try. The Experience: They open up at 7am and since we are early risers we ended up being the first ones here. As we entered the place (for our first time) it was a little confusing. The desk is right at the entrance and so is the menu. The person that greeted us told us to order off the menu that is located on the wall on a chalk board and then they will bring our food to our table. At first, I had a little trouble with the menu as it is really crowded with choices to make but after a few minutes I got the gist of it. The Food: I went with a skillet and made choices to what went inside it. The time to prepare the food was pretty quick and you can tell that the ingredients are fresh. I have to admit that it was pretty cool that when we started to eat our breakfast that a train was padding by and it gave you the sensation that you were dining on a train. The taste of the skillet was pretty good but I wouldn't say that it was amazing or the best thing that I had ever had. I do know that my sons would like it as it is a meat and potato type of a dish and that is what they go for (more meat and more potatoes). The size was quite adequate and they are also used to shoveling food in mass quantities into their mouths. Bottom Line: The food (breakfast) was a above average but the building and the whole setup and experience was a little confusing. This place receives 4.5 stars so there are fans. From the reviews I have read it sounds like they have good sandwiches. At this point, I give them 2.5 stars and I choo-choo-choose not to return.

This place is an awesome local restaurant with delicious food and friendly staff. You won't be disappointed. Great breakfast skillets, and large sandwiches and homemade soups for lunch. Grab a seat at the bench table looking out over the tracks and let the kids watch for trains.

Excellent deli sandwiches and soups. Friendly service, as well. They can be a little slow at times so call ahead if you're on a schedule.

This is our go-to breakfast joint, especially on the weekends. They can be a little pricier than average for breakfast food, but we have never had a bad meal or poor experience there. Seating is limited inside, but we have always managed to find a place to sit without a problem. I always order my bacon extra crispy (near-burnt crispy) and they are one of the few places that have gotten it right just about every time. The one time they didn't, the brought the food to the table, immediately realized their mistake, and took it back for more cooking - all without me saying a word! There is a $10 minimum for credit cards. With two people, you shouldn't have any issue reaching that.

Awesome food for a relatively good price. I went in for lunch and ordered a Buffalo Chicken Wrap ($7.25) and an order of Curly Fries ($1.75). It was kind of a bummer when the wrap didn't come with fries, but they were worth the extra $1.75. The wrap was served on more of a pita style wrap than a traditional tortilla. Thick wrap, fresh and soft, WAY better than a simple tortilla. Neat little hole in the wall with cool decor, right next to the train tracks. They have a dining bar by the front window so you can see out (and not look like such a loner if you go in alone). They also have 4 tables for outdoor seating. I will definitely be visiting this place again. They do have a $15 minimum for credit cards, so be sure to either have cash or be prepared to spend at least $15.

Best place to eat in Mundelein! The food is amazing. Everything on the menu is tasty and prepared with attention to detail. Lots of options for those with dietary needs. Service is very friendly and the decor of the place is one of a kind. For sure a place you will go back to again and again!

This has to be one of the best places in the area for wraps... They have a big collection of hot/cold wraps with a large selection of sides/soups.. Beware they have a minimum of $10 to use card .. SO do carry cash... or you will end up buying stuff until u reach 10.... Like me ... :)

Been there 3 times. Wraps are great. Most recent visit resulted in inedible kids grilled cheese. 2 sandwiches smelled and tasted like fish. Mgr looked at me like i was crazy. Wont go back.

I had the typical healthy lunch; a cheeseburger, fries, and a soft drink. It was very good. I'm a railfan, so I enjoyed the interior. The service was stupendous. One goofy thing, and it doesn't apply to me because I never use a credit card to buy lunch; to use a credit card, the bill must be at least 15 dollars. There is a lengthy message about this, and how to get around it. Taking credit cards is the cost of doing business these days. To decline a sale and irritate a customer seems counter-productive. But, hey, to each his or her own.

After reading the majority of these reviews and wanting to try the place for a while, I finally made it over to The Caboose this past weekend to see for myself if it was as any good. It was. I walked in with a friend just after noon. It wasn't especially busy, so I think we must have just missed a rush. In any case, we chose what we each wanted from the chalkboards, paid, got our drinks and sat down. The dining area overall was clean and cool. The table we chose had plenty of room so that neither of us felt cramped. The food didn't take long to arrive. We both got breakfast wraps (but who says you can't eat breakfast at any time of day?) which were steaming hot when they were put down in front of us. The eggs, tortilla and other items in the wrap tasted fresh and flavorful. There wasn't an overabundance of one ingredient so that you could taste everything in the wrap. The diced potatoes with onion were a nice treat! They were offered as an option instead of hash browns and normally, you have to ask if you would like onion added. The quality of the food, combined with the reasonable price and the very nice, friendly staff make The Caboose a winner in my book.

Chicken Bacon & Avocado wrap was excellent. Good chicken and crisp bacon. I've also had the steak fajita wrap which was very good. Good quality, tender steak and the pita was hot and fresh.

Oh my lord, the grilled veggie feta wrap is amazing! Just remember to bring cash, there is a $15 limit to use a credit card. Usually they are flexible if you are close to that.

This is our go to place on the weekend for breakfast and lunch. My husband loves their skillets and I am a huge fan of their sandwiches and homemade soups. Love their buffalo chicken wrap, Reuben, and patty melt to name a few. Service is fast. Glad to have a place like this nearby.

I think I found my new favorite restaurant in the suburbs. In fact, I like this place better than most places I've tried in the city. My boyfriend and I have been here at least once a week since we first discovered it. The service is fast and friendly. Everything is made in-house and fresh to order. We've seriously enjoyed every single item we've tried so far. Definitely try the bacon cheddar burger (best burger around), patty melt, curly fries, sweet potato fries, Italian beef, Philly cheese steak, chocolate chip cookies, and fresh soups.

Finally took the time to stop in here. I had a Groupon that was expiring and while my original plan was to take the grandkids we just never made it so I decided to get take out. It's so adorable inside that I'm really sorry for my poor planning. My 5 yr old granddaughter was with me and declared it totally awesome! There are trains and train related decor throughout. We ordered a gyro, a party melt, fries (reg - they have seasoned) and onion rings. The gyro was very good according to the two people who split it but the order of onion rings included only 4 rings! Not sure if that's the norm or if it's due to me using the Groupon. Either way I wasn't happy with the quantity but the quality was good. The patty melt came on marble rye and was great. Not too greasy as sometimes happens. The reg fries are thick cut and a fair sized portion. The service was very friendly and fast. Other than the portion size of the rings I've got no complaints and we will be back soon.

Great food, not the least expensive place to get food in town, but you can taste the quality of the food that you're paying for. Highly recommend making a visit.

Pretty tasty breakfast here the other day. It was Sunday and we ordered right away. The woman working the counter was yelling something at one of the cooks, which was weird and a little awkward, but the food came fast and it was very good. The traditional 2egg breakfast is cheap and wonderful.

Delicious little breakfast place. The food was really good, the service was great and the price is right. Everything you could want or need from a breakfast place. Also, if ya like trains this is your place...the decor is all "geared" towards trains (see what I did there?) and it's right next to the Metra :) I'll definitely be "stopping" in there again!

  • Chris C.

The grilled ham and gouda with poupon was divine! The split pea soup was delicious, just needed a little salt and pepper to taste. The atmosphere is good, until the high schoolers come in for lunch, but the establishment can't help that. Been here once before, glad I came back!

  • Mundo V.

The food's main attribute is its simplicity and fresh ingredients. Combine that with a great atmosphere and you get a good combination. The whole place is related to trains, so your kid will love it. It is greatly set, with memorabilia, toys, photos... the owners even managed to construct functioning train tracks that run just in front of the restaurant, so you get to see real cargo trains go by!! Downside: Cramped tables and deficient service. In brief: Is this a good place? Yes Is it crazy good? No Will I come back? Yes Do I recommend? Yes, if you are around.

For me, this place ended up being a flop. It could very well be due to what I ordered or my expectations where set high due to all the outstanding reviews the Caboose have received. When you first drive up to the Caboose, you clearly recognize this place as borderline Dive, which is perpetuated when you walk in and see the walk up, order counter. But, that is okay, for some of the best places I go to are Dive-y. The guy taking the order was nice and helpful with a few of my questions and was quick in taking my order. He handed me my order number as the food is brought out to you. I stopped by the soda fountain, which in my view by today's standards was very basic, coke products and didn't have things like root-beer, Hi-C, or Raspberry Tea. The dinning area is small, a bit clunky, but nice and keeps with the train theme. As I sat in my little corner, I noticed that the place was filling up quickly, so certainly a favorite lunch spot for the locals. I ended up waiting a bit longer than expected and then finally my Philly Cheese Steak arrive and upon initial inspection, I was disappointed as the size of the Philly was extremely small... in fact, I would call it bite sized. It was also greasy, looking since the onions were literally dripping grease, but I like greasy food so that did not dissuade me just yet. Then I took my first bite and it was confirmed that my, bite sized, greasy Philly was a poor choice and tasted horrible. It was cooked way too long and had a hint of burnt taste... not char grilled, but burnt. I must admit, I was really disappointed for I really wanted to like this place for it had all the right signs. I then started looking about what others have ordered and noted they were either having soup, or a wrap. Then, come to think of it as I recalled reading recent reviews, most were about the wraps or breakfast meals. So, unfortunately for me, my first impression of the Caboose is a poor one. In fact, the Philly was so bad, that I left with only eating about 1/2 the sandwich.

  • Colleen D.

Not the best place to eat breakfast/lunch. Kind of greasy food and looked like they used cheese whiz on my breakfast bowl instead of using real cheese. Got spilled with food plate by manager or someone who works there, he didn't apologize or gave us free food. Interesting.. Thought we would get something since he spilled food all over me. Will not go back there.

Caboose is my favorite place for wraps and sandwiches. I really enjoy the steak fajita wrap, chicken bacon avocado wrap, turkey de gallo wrap, and gyros, among others. The steak on the steak fajita wrap is very tender. The ingredients all taste fresh. They are good with kids and always very friendly. The kids like watching the trains on the nearby tracks. The prices are very reasonable for what you get.

The food was absolutely delicious. The service was sub par though and if you come for the first time without reading a yelp review somewhere that you need to order before seating yourself, you're going to panic last minute when there's a line behind you and you haven't thoroughly looked through the menu which is placed all around you. We ended up scanning the menu but assumed we'd be seated and have menu's to look at in front of us. We were wrong. Fortunately enough for me, I knew what I wanted pretty much right away. The buffalo chicken wrap. Now I've had quite a few of these wraps in my time but this was by far the best, the most chicken stuffed in a wrap and oodles of sauce and blue cheese to please the pallet. I would highly recommend it if that's something you're into. They've got a wide array of wraps, sandwiches and salads. It's more or less just American food, but it's good American food!

I've been going to this place for many years while I was in school and I go back any time I have the chance, though I'm a little further away from it now. I'm a loyal customer and certainly will be as long as the quality keeps up. It's a relatively small cafe but they recently added some new booths and tables so it has upped the seating capacity. It's definitely very casual. I often went there for breakfast and they do a good job. I think it is the best breakfast in Mundelein with delicious omelets made with good ingredients and a skilled hand. The breakfast potatoes are a good compliment. They have some really unique combinations too like their gyro omelet made with gyro meat and tzatziki. All that said, it is one thing and one thing only that keeps me coming back and that is the hot wraps. I've tried most of them and all of them are delicious though I certainly have my favorites. My top two are the gyro wrap and the steak and mushroom wrap. The gyro wrap has very tender and flavorful meat complimented by a tangy tzatziki and feta cheese. The steak wrap has meat that is usually cooked to around medium with a complimenting sauce and mushrooms that make the wrap delicious. Do be warned of two things. Firstly, they do not take cards for orders under a certain amount, fifteen or twenty dollars if I remember correctly. Secondly, they have limited hours, closing early on some days. Make sure to check the hours before you get your hopes up to enjoy a great wrap.

A million stars to Caboose! If I could, that's what I would say. Everything I have ever tried here is so delicious. The only downside is just that it is a smaller place and can get busy at mealtimes, but I don't really think that's a bad thing. Try the southwest puffs, the burgers, the omelettes..... well try anything. It's all good! I really love their burgers, and I'm not much of a burger person at all. I do miss the old onion twigs they had (now they have standard onion rings, which are still pretty good) but I think they are great. OH and I believe it's the owner, but there's a guy that works the counter almost always who is ungodly friendly and nice and helpful. He's really great, very quick, always willing to be helpful and nice. One more thing - since I had to answer the question below, but orders under $15 have to be in cash. So bring cash or bring some friends.

I used to work in the area and started going when it opened and fell in love. I would go and pick up a salad (always fresh and delicious). I even took my husband there for lunch on the weekend and he became a fan. Then when I did not work in the area I kept saying I am going to come back. Well I am so happy I went there again this past weekend. Had a burger for the first time. It was soooo good, my son had the chicken fingers he said they were the best and my husband said we won't wait 2 years to come back. Very good, fresh food cooked perfect and served to you at your table. The only two downsides are they don't take Credit cards for anything under $15 so if you go alone bring cash. Also, the fries and drinks are seperate, for the 3 of us for lunch it was $25. Kind of pricey. But it was so good.

My lunch options became very limited after my company moved but I'm glad I found Caboose. They have a large selection which is good since I'll be coming here often. Their portions are generous and the fries are delicious!! So far I've enjoyed -Philly cheese steak (it looks small but I was so wrong) -Patty melt -Italian beef (liked it more than portillos because I was able to control the amount of gravy. Didn't have a soggy mess or a sandwich that was too dry) -Chicken fajita hot wrap (everything wrapped in a delicious soft pita bread... Probably would be happy if this was the only item on their menu) I can't wait to try almost everything on the menu which is something I rarely say. Only bad thing is that its cash only unless you charge at least $15. Enjoy!!

No nonsense your neighborhood breakfast joint. They serve great food and have a perfect name for a place next to a railroad. Pretty big menu for a breakfast place but the food speaks for itself. We tried egg benedict and skillet and both were excellent.

This is a great family restaurant with everything your family could want. As you could guess from its name, it has a train theme and the train memorabilia and train sets will keep the young ones interested. And of course, trains come by every few minutes. The food is great with a large selection that includes great brunch. The staff is amazing. My only complaint was that the place is a bit run down, small and lacked air conditioning.

had the eggs benedict with the hashbrowns and cheese sauce and it was awesome. Not the healthiest food, but tasted great. the guy who took our order and cooked the food was awesome. very nice guy. great customer service.

I had to update to add: Caboose's breakfast is EXCELLENT! This has become our go to place when we want some tasty Eggs Benedict or Omelettes. Their breakfast side potatoes? Also awesome. I tend to mix in some leftover hollandaise sauce onto the potatoes for some extra goodness. :)

Three words: sweet potato fries!! How have I been sleeping on this place? I've lived in Mundelein about a year now, and I'm constantly griping about the lack of american cafes (Panera, Corner Bakery, etc). Well, The Caboose is to the rescue! I drive by here all the time, and to be honest it always looks dead (it closes at 2pm or 7pm depending on what day, maybe thats why?). But it was open this afternoon with a full parking lot, so I gave it a try. Order at a walk up counter, with huge chalkboard and print menus. The gentlemen taking the order was nice, knowledgeable about the food, and very accommodating (NO TOMATOES ANYWHERE! Im kind of mean about it). My husband and I both got "Pitatilla" hot wraps- Santa Fe for myself, and Chicken Bacon Avocado for him. Drinks were self service (I got water, but I did notice Tazo iced tea!). Medium size, clean dining room with average decor. Food came in 5-10 mins, piping hot from a helpful food runner/waitress. Food was great! The wrap was huge, and full to the brim with lots of high quality ingredients. You could tell everything was made fresh to order- even soups are made in house. Cannot even begin to express how excited I am to have sweet potato fries!! After devouring the very tasty food, she politely offered to take our empty plates from the table. Pros: Very tasty, quick, clean, friendly, homemade feel. Cons: A little pricey for sandwiches- had to pay extra for even one side dish.

My husband and I go here at least once a week! For me to go to a restaurant more than once is noteworthy! We have never had a bad meal at Caboose. Usually we order the hot wraps. It's hard to make a recommendation because they are all excellent. Other sandwiches range from average (hamburger) to fabulous (grilled cheese). The soups are supposedly made by the same person who made them for Journey's End Restaurant back in the day and are just as good. We have eaten breakfast here a few times. The omelettes and gravy train wreck are especially good. As far as sides, the breakfast potatoes are very tasty, in addition to the coffee. Of course, Caboose is not without some faults: 1) The kitchen is small. On busy days, you may wait 15 minutes or more (we're used to it by now but may not be good if you are in a hurry); 2) The eating area can get uncomfortably hot during hot summer days; 3) It was at least a year before they replaced the cracked front window and are they ever going to replace the burned-out light bulbs outside? Obviously, we have overlooked these faults because we LOVE the food so much. It looks like Caboose is here to stay and thank god for that!!!

Great place place for lunch with a nice selection of sandwichs plus great soup! Super nice staff that really wants to make sure you are happy. When they did not have an item, he was so appologetic and really felt bad. Great local place with a menu that is clearly done with care to be sure only what is good goes out, not what the food distributor has like many other places. It is small, but very quiant and they will bring out your food. Keep up the great work!

This place is a hidden gem. Everything we've ordered has been has been amazing. The All Aboard Skillet was exactly what I needed before an afternoon of snowboarding. The owner is very friendly and hasn't led us astray with recommendations from the menu.

Original setting but still manages to keep the frills at bay. The food was delicious, hearty and comforting. This was our first visit so we stuck to our breakfast tradition. I had the traditional eggs Benedict with hollandaise sauce (they offer the choice of any of their intriguing cheese sauces as a substitute) and a side of diced fried potatoes with onions. It was delicious! The Canadian bacon was flavorful not over salted and heated without being dried out (I'm assuming the use prepackaged). The sauce had a nice lemony backbone that balanced out the natural richness, though it lacked the thickness I usually prefer. The potatoes were a delightful surprise. They were crispy without being greasy and the onions added a nice flavor . My husband had the Gravy Train Wreck and was pretty happy with his choice. The Caboose serves up a good classic biscuits and sausage gravy topped with eggs, and a potato side. The gravy had a good consistency but could have used a limited more salty/smokiness to balance out the hint of sweetness in their biscuits. My husband disagreed so that could be a matter of preference. Unlike me husband opted for their has brown patties that were really well seasoned and crispy. The full portion was not for the faint of appetite. It was rich and tasty for an indulgent Sunday breakfast. This place was really good! A throwback to classic breakfast joints before the boutique froo-froo trend took over. We plan to go back and will be recommending it to others.

Food seems to be good. I've only been here a few times. The reason I haven't been here more is that they don't accept credit cards for any order less than $15. That's bogus. Most times during lunch I eat alone. So, my average fare is not at their limit. To management-PLEASE ACCEPT CREDIT CARDS FOR ORDERS LESS THAN $15!!

I've been here a few times and the food is good and reasonably priced. For breakfast especially the egg sandwiches are great and the eggs benedict are the best I have had. Wish they offered milk canisters for the coffee, only creamers.

They're very accomodating to special requests and everything is customizable, and with VERY reasonable prices for the food, which has always been good. I haven't had anything I didn't like, although I do have a few favorites, the all aboard skillet for breakfast - pick your ingredients, and make it your own. The chicken, ham and smoked gouda is all kinds of ooye, gooey and delicious. More than anything, I love the fact that this is one of very few places to allow dogs to sit outside with their owners. I hope this place is here to stay, and other establishments in the area follow their lead.

Everything I've ordered here has been fabulous. The staff is cool, knowledgeable; the owners are great- very neighborhood oriented. Good music as mentioned in a previous review. Also previously mentioned, the chef who used to work at Journey's End was strategically swooped up by the Caboose's owners (clever move, guys) and each day an amazing soup from the late and great restaurant is offered up here. The good news is, they taste just as they did when they were once served in bottomless crocks at the closed Mundelein legend. The bad news is, the quart containers of soup we locals would brave severe weather for in our slippers and sweatpants at 9:00pm when dinner didn't work out- or if we were simply jonesing for it (yes, it was that good) cost about the same as a mere bowl of it costs at The Caboose today. And last time I was there, the staple Vegetable soup wasn't offered daily. But anyway, enough about the soup. I'm a burger snob and I need to express how amazing the burgers at The Caboose are. I'm the bitch who sends the overcooked burger back to the kitchen and demands a new one be made. This doesn't happen here. You get the temperature you ask for, and you get the best burger in Mundelein- maybe even in Lake County. If you haven't been to The Caboose you need to go. I said so.

I have so badly wanted to like this place; it's very convenient to my work and would be a great place to get lunch. I continue to give it chance after chance by trying different menu items but almost always I'm disappointed. 1. Their menu is expensive and a la carte. When you pay $7.00 for a just a sandwich they really shouldn't be charging you .10 for a cup for water while dining in. 2. I found a peanut in my BBQ Chicken Wrap. Nothing is more disconcerting when you eat something that is definitely not supposed to be there. What if I was one of the thousands of people that seem to have deadly peanut allergies? That kind of lack of attention to the food they are putting out is worrisome and shows their lack of care for the quality of product they are putting out. 3. Service is slow. Even when the place has been practically empty, I've had a long wait time for a grilled cheese sandwich both dining in and carrying out. 4. Everything is greasy. Sometimes it seems like they dip your sandwich in grease before slopping down and shipping it out. Even the breakfast burrito I had tired one time squished out grease with every bite. Plenty of people I know really love this place and have had nothing but good experiences with it. Maybe it's just me and I get the 1 in 100 orders that is off the mark. I just can't help being disappointed in something every time I eat there.

Gyros Benedict, where have you been all my life? If this sounds like a combination that shouldn't work, well it shouldn't... Yet it does fantastically! 5th visit today over the last couple of years and I think I'll become a regular. These guys are able to get great flavor out of everything I've tried. Great food in a great little spot!

Delicious! I had the philly, my bro-in-law the gyro, and my mom-in-law the chicken-bacon-avocado wrap and all of us were very pleased with our food. Even the munchkins enjoyed their mac&cheese and grilled cheese! Very kid friendly but not in a stupid "circus clown" kind of way. A true gem!

If there were cafes like this in every town, my life would be a couple notches happier. They really deserve 6 stars in my opinion. Caboose has a nice selection of foods ranging from healthy to heart attack, so you can come here to eat no matter what mood you're in! The food is made fresh, and you can tell by the flavor and texture. The seasoned curly fries are so hot, crisp and delicious, and the potato salad is probably the best I've ever had. The atmosphere is really laid back and comfortable and the staff is friendly and welcoming. I also noticed that they play really good music, which is rare! Usually I'm hating whatever top 40 station is playing at places like this. On top of their delicious food, they serve really great lattes, mochas and coffees. I only have one complaint.... If you go anytime after 3pm, the place becomes a loud high school hangout. It's pretty obnoxious. I could hear "like, um, like um, tee hee hee, SERIOUSLY!" through my headphones. I know there is nothing the owner can do about this, so I don't blame them. I just wish we could ban high schoolers from going anywhere but school and their basements. Tip: If you go for lunch, go early. This awesomeness of this place is no secret, and every table fills up.

Everything here is delicious!!! My family and I get lunch here all the time, mostly to-go, and we are never disappointed. The chicken bacon avocado wrap is a favorite of my mother in law, as well as the patty melt. In my opinion, you can't go wrong with their grilled cheese, it's to die for! (made on texas toast, with lots of cheese, bacon and tomato slices!) If you're looking for a delicious home made sandwich, wrap or burger, you've got to try Caboose! Prices aren't bad either!

Me and the BF LOVE this hidden gem. The owner is personable, walked us through the menu, made suggestions, served us, checked on us, and even offered a hot sauce, what a wonderful experience. I had the "train wreck" biscuits and gravy, eggs w/hashbrowns, cheese and a side of french toast. This comes in a large size and small. Ummm hello large and had left overs that I ate later that afternoon. The coffee was fresh and Seattle's Best. The BF had a skillet I believe w/turkey, eggs, peppers, avocado. OMG we are already talking about coming back this weekend as I will have my 5 yr old son and he will love the train atmosphere. Thank you Caboose for serving us a wonderful breakfast experience. I'm so glad I YELPED you!

I have a new favorite place in Mundelein. Okay, I have to say that I would only give the breakfast a 4 star rating (it is the best in Mundelein, but not so good as to deserve 5 stars) but I have recently become aquainted with the wraps for lunch. I had the Fajita Chicken wrap which was superb (but very messy) and the Gyro Wrap which featured great Tzatziki (nice lemon and cucumber notes) and tons of delicious feta cheese and plenty of gyro meat. Please note that on Saturday, Sunday & Monday they only are open for breakfast and lunch...don't go there to grab dinner those days (which is too bad, after watching the Seahawks play I am often in the mood!) and they close at 7pm the other days, so EARLY dinners only.

I'll preface this review by expressing my sick obsession with sandwiches. I can eat a sandwich for every meal for the rest of my life and I'd be happy. With that in mind, Caboose was pretty appetizing. The man behind the counter was helpful, and I decided upon the chicken bacon & avocado wrap, and substituted ranch instead of the spicy poupon that was listed (though I've heard from others the poupon actually goes pretty well with the other ingredients). I also got a side order of the cheesy onion twigs, which were a nice change of pace from the usual french fries or potato chips you'd get at other places. The wrap itself was bigger than I could finish in one sitting, which is always a plus, and it tasted just as good, if not better, when I reheated it. Your meal will cost slightly more than your typical sandwich shop (e.g. Subway, Cousins, etc...) but the ingredients are much better, as is the overall experience. Caboose is definitely worth a try if you're in the area and are craving a sandwich. As a bonus, if you happen to catch a train when you're leaving the parking lot, you can tell yourself it's all part of the experience.

A nice small sit down restaurant in Libertyville. They've got a lot of options to offer here. I love the chicken bacon avocado wrap...get it almost every time I come here. It's definitely the bacon that makes the wrap. It's always fresh and crunchy. Who doesn't want their bacon nice & crunchy? No one! They got a huge variety of sides you can add on too. I went with the fruit cup today. Should I be worried? :/ You can get your meal for under $10 if you wanted to conserve the cash. And the workers are pretty nice too. You should definitely check this place out.

We live close and go about 2x month. It's delicious. Breakfast recommendation would be eggs Benedict the potatoes are cooked perfect every time. Lunch options are endless..and all I've tried are delicious. Chicken Bacon Avocado is probably a favorite. I would like to see some pancake options but not a deal breaker as there are other places that do pancakes well. The service is always excellent. Will go again and again. Hoping for a Caboose II that's open for dinner and drinks.

I have been to caboose on several occasions and the food has been great every time. I especially love the French toast it has some sort of cinnamon sugar butter or something on it and is delicious. My boyfriend loves the breakfast sandwiches specifically scrambled egg, chorizo, Chihuahua cheese and avocado on a croissant. Today, I ventured into their lunch menu, I ordered the beef noodle soup and was a little nervous it was going to be that gross out of a can soup that some restaurants serve but to my delight the soup was AWSOME and you could tell it was home made. If I had to pick one thing to change about the place it would be the salad dressing. This may seem strange but I consider myself a ranch connoisseur, everything is so great here and I know they could whip up a mean homemade ranch but instead they have the traditional hidden valley. It seems stupid but motz sticks are just SO much better with good ranch=) Regardless of the ranch I would defiantly recommend this place to friends! Caboose is laid back, has great food and is reasonably priced. If you're in the area it is worth trying!

I went here last week with my b-i-l and sister for a late lunch/snack. My b-i-l ordered a italian sausage sandwich, my sister the bean soup, and we split an order of mozzarella sticks. The mozzarella sticks were hot and fresh and had some really good cheese in them. My brother in law's italian sausage smelled wonderful and he said it was great(though it does come in pattie form and not shredded sausage, or long tubular sausage casing form). My sister's soup was excellent according to her. The service was quick and the owner/manager was very nice. I hope this place takes off so I can visit it again next year and try out some other things. For the soup lovers, the guy who made soup for a restaurant that closed in the area makes the soup at Caboose now. They change the soups daily, so its always a surprise.

Thanks to our Yelp and our daughter, we recently discovered the Caboose and went for lunch on Saturday. My husband had the ahi tuna wrap and he loved the great quality tuna that could be served rare. I had the Asian salad with chicken and was disappointed with the mound of shredded head lettuce and somewhat skimpy ingredients. The prices just don't support what you get in return (for example, no sides with sandwiches). I don't know that I'd go back for lunch, but may try it for breakfast. The omelets I saw at other tables looked good.

Ever since the Brown Bag Deli on Park Street closed years ago there has been a serious lack of sandwich shops in Mundelein. Caboose has finally filled this void. The lunch/dinner menu features deli sandwiches as well as hot and cold house sammies, burgers, hot and cold wraps, and daily soups. Add on some sweet and salty sweet potato fries or any of their other tasty sides and you've got one of the best lunches in Mundelein. On my most recent visit to Caboose I went for breakfast and ordered the Gravy Trainwreck, a mess of biscuits and gravy with hash-browns and eggs, and it was just what a rough morning calls for. The rest of the menu featured traditional breakfast combos, sandwiches, and burritos as well as a selection of variations on eggs benedict. I tried my companions traditional benedict and it was quality. The fact that you order from a window as you enter the restaurant always gave me the impression that service was supposed to be speedy but orders usually take about as much time as any other full service restaurant. I've never had to wait an exorbitant amount of time but have had to pass on stopping in before when pressed for time. However they do have an "Express Lunch" and although I've assumed that this is just a cute railroad industry reference I've recently been led to believe that its a quicker ticket time menu. I guess I'll have to give it a try!

I love this place! Usually I go for breakfast and always get the eggs Benedict club (tomato, avocado, bacon) with cheese sauce instead of hollandaise. This is to die for and then they add a side of potatoes. Let me tell you about the potato patties they serve with bfast.....SO GOOD! The ingredients are always fresh and the cheese sauce is a nice switch up. Staff and owners are great people!

Today was the first time I had ever eaten at Caboose. I decided to start my NFL kickoff weekend with a skillet and I was not disappointed. This place has really good wraps! They are made with Pitatilla's, exactly what is sounds like - a cross between a pita and a tortilla. They are big enough that you could split one with a friend. They also have a thing called Cheesy onion twigs - they are GOOD - they are similar to onion rings, but cut more like fries and they are fried in a slightly cheesy tasting batter. Today I had the grilled veggie and feta wrap. It is a hot wrap and it was overstuffed with veggies. I have also had some of the cold wraps and the place does not skimp on the contents!

Love caboose for breakfast and lunch!! They have a huge variety on their menu that will please any kind of palette. Different homemade soups almost everyday, great sandwiches (hot and cold) salads and burgers. I recommend the cold veggie wrap, grilled cheese, chicken artichoke hot wrap and of course the soups!!!! Located right on the rail tracks the caboose is decorated appropriately! Can get busy and crowded in the dining area around lunch but you can fall ahead and carry out too. A local crowd pleaser! Make sure to check it out.

I'm in love. Tired of the few lunch choices around here so decided to try something new. I got the philly and husband got the chicken Philly. Added curly fries and drinks to both. $21 total. Order at the counter and they bring your food out. Place was empty and food came out fast. So good! Generous sized sandwich. Buttered and grilled French bread, lots of meat, tender grilled onions and peppers, melted provolone and mayo. Perfection. Fries were good. Coke was good (not all places make sure the machines are running right). Can't wait to go again.

I have lived in the area for 6 years and hate that I only discovered this place today! The food (or at least everything that my party ordered) is outstanding. Philly cheesesteak sandwich is SO good!! My kids love their food too. This is an awesome casual family spot with extensive breakfast and lunch menu. Good parking too. I can confidently say we will become regulars!!

great little place. Not fast food (but is fast), but it's a "walk up and give your order", waitress brings you your food. Guy behind the counter was friendly and helpful in suggesting what to order. I had a roast beef/blue cheese/onion ring wrap, sweet potato fries with cinnamon. My wife had the grilled cheese and the munchies (tator tots with cheese inside). The decor is nice (trains for course), and there's a giant picture window where you can see actual trains going by (tracks aren't far away).
