Okay...you can't always trust happy yelpers, I guess. We were headed to back Morris after visiting family in Pontiac. (Just visiting Morris too, from the southeast.) Hungry. We went to Yelp for dinner ideas. We LOVE Mexican food, hubby and I. The reviews for this place were so positive! Authentic Mexican food! We bypassed La Mex which we like but it's run-of-the-mill and a bit bland. Saturday night, 5:30, no crowd. Waitress brought a basket of crushed chips and two condiment bottles containing a tasty red salsa and a verde. We ordered guacamole which looked authentic but wasn't above average. Hubby ordered the wet burrito pastor, he thought the meat was well seasoned but dry. I ordered the chicken burrito with beans and rice as a side. Burrito had chicken, shredded cheddar, refried beans...I honestly don't remember what else, only that the entire meal was lukewarm. Cheese shreds were solid. Hubby poked a finger on it to confirm the temp; maybe I was just being picky? No it was barely warm. The waitress took it back and heated it for me in the microwave while the woman behind the kitchen counter glared at me. It was better hot, but had little flavor. People of Morris, you deserve Authentic Mexican food. This isn't it.

The tamales are amazing! I think they make them fresh on the weekends and you can pick up a dozen. Love the red salsa and the guac.

Best Mexican food in Morris, family-owned & awesome! Also, they sell homemade tamales on Saturday for a GOOD price. Also, it's the only place around here that I can buy the ingredients I need for traditional Mexican food!

My usual spot in Ottawa (Weitz Cafe) is not open at night. I checked nearby Yelp reviews and "authentic Mexican" caught my eye. I was not let down. Great food, prices and service....very friendly. The carne asada and al pastor were excellent!

Finally went to Tobby's instead of passing it by for the 1000th time. The "mart" part is tiny and next door, not part of the restaurant. As other Yelpers have said, and I believed, the food, service and selection was awesome. The guacamole some of the best ever and you could tell it was made there , not just scooped out of a vendor's bucket. Also, the drinks were very good and fresh tasting.

I always make a point to stop by Toby's when i'm in Morris. This the only place, in my opinion, that you can get real authentic Mexican food in a 100 mile radius. The service is excellent and the owners are an amazing family. If you're ever in the neighborhood, do yourself a favor and stop by.

I love this restaurant. I'm from San Diego, and anyone who knows anything about Mexican food knows that we have some of the best being so close to the border. I consider Toby's the BEST Mexican food restaurant in IL. I look forward to spending time there every year when I come into town. Tuesday's and Thursday's are 1/2 price margaritas. The tamales are so good and the Carne Asada Torta is the best I have had ANYWHERE! (San Diego included) Bonus with the Mexi-Mart next door. I love me some Mexican coke!

My son introduced us to this place. It's a good, low key place for solid Mexican food, at prices that won't bruise your wallet. I had a steak burrito, my son had the veggie burrito, and the rest of the party had various dishes. The salsa (green and red) was nice and spicy hot, and the food was great. The service was prompt - just remember to pay your bill at the cash register, where they keep your ticket. One minor complaint - it was cold in there - then again, it was -5 F outside. They could really use an airlock to help keep the warm air in.

I love Tobby's! Best Mexican food around the area bar none. I agree with a previous reviewer, carne asada torta is the best! Only suggestion is the lighting, it would be more inviting with dimmed lights. That being said, I would not go anywhere else for Mexican food in the area. Always prompt, polite service. Authentic Mexican, hard to find in this neck of the woods!

4.5 stars Has been in the area for quite some time and its quite surprising that there's no listing. Pretty much, its half restaurant, half grocery store but pretty much everyone patronizes the restaurant portion. I went in during the tail end of my hike and much to my delight, the table adjacent to me were watching Trailer Park Boys the movie. I got 3 tacos, which are $.99 each on Mondays and Tuesdays, 2 large horchatas (it was 105 outside), and a pork burrito, which came to $11.50. Tacos were the authentic kind, small and no lettuce or tomato, only onions and cilantro, just the way I like it. The carnita pork burrito was a breeze to finish as they packed the rice and bean side dishes in it. They're know for their tamales, which are for sale on Sunday mornings but unfortunately sell out rather fast. A great option in Morris. Nice owners.

Really good as far as Mexican food in a small town. kids liked the cheese fries. Steak tacos were very tasty. We also like the soda in the old-time bottles. Wait staff was very friendly.

Good food. Fast service. Authentic but not as flavorful as others places I've been. The green sauce was watered down. Still a good place to get lunch. Liked the town too, very quiet and well kept. Nice to see a downtown thriving.

I remember when this was just a grocery with a small restaurant in the back. It was just as great then as it is now. Lovely owners. Extremely pleasant to eat there. Good quality food. Hope to make it back in soon. Order the Alambre--if you like spicy, this will hit the spot!

Horrible experience!!!! There were 3 servers, sign said "seat yourself", one of the bartenders DIDNT look 21 to be mixing drinks, and was LOUD. Truthfully, seating yourself causes for a disaster. The servers didn't know which table to serve because of the high volume coming in. Sitting across the area in which food was being served noticing the dirty dishes container and trash in our vicinity was NOT pleasant! We waited long for our food and food that was sitting there for about 10 minutes was probably cold considering it WAS chilly towards the back. The what 'appeared to be owner' and I say that loosely looked at my brothers fajitas that were sitting there AFTER being done again and didn't bother to acknowledge it. My mom had to physically walk to the counter and ask the cooks if this was the fajita dinner! The "owner" instead, waited for his dinner ,plopped himself in front of the tv to watch the soccer game and adjusted the thermostat. SERIOUSLY?!? Before you plop yourself LOOK at your cooks arguing and flustered staff. I along with my family walked out with a headache and an unpleasant experience. Very disorganized place.

I went in the restaurant and ordered takeout. I was greeted promptly and the staff were all friendly. It was ready in 15 minutes and I browsed their store while I waited. There also is a bar. They have good sized portions (as do most Mexican restaurants) and the food was yummy. I thought their pricing was very cheap for the quality of the food. You can tell they shred their chihuahua cheese themselves!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
