This place is alright. I've eaten here a lot since it is close to my in-law's house. The food isn't amazing, but it's not bad. They have vegetable spring rolls which is a big plus in my book (I basically choose where I go based on if they have spring rolls or not.) I find their fried rice pretty meh, so I usually get the vegetable chop suey and spring rolls. Decent food, nothing great. They have a facebook page which holds free food contests from time to time, which is nice. They don't really seem to have any tofu dishes, which is a major bummer for me, since I love tofu. Basically, if someone suggests this place, I'll eat there, but it's not something I would pick myself.

Before I get into the service issues, here is what I ordered: Shrimp Fried Rice-lrg Shrimp with some carrots and fried rice. No vegetable. Boring and lacked flavor Szechuan Beef-Spicy-half order Generous amounts of very tender beef. Considering I ordered spicy and being Szechuan. It tasted like pepper in egg fu young sauce. Twice Cooked Pork - half order 50 minutes after placing my order I was told they will not sell in a half order. I showed them the menu on their website and I told them they should get it changed. Canceled item and made the Szechuan Beef a large order. I called my order in and was told 20 minute it would ready. I showed up after 15 to make sure I got it hot! The wind chill was -4 at this time. When I walked in the store and cashier went in back and told my order was cooking. NP I took a seat. After waiting 25 minutes which is 40 minutes after I ordered I asked is going to be ready soon? 10 minutes later she returned after taking some orders from another phone. I was informed that the twice cooked pork is only available in a large order. This I addressed earlier in the review. Ten minutes later I get my order at full price not even an offering of a damn egg roll. My wife called and asked if I was driving to China to get the food. I went back into the restaurant and told the cashier that this is totally unacceptable. She responded that "Can't you see we are really busy!" Than don't tell me twenty minutes when it's and hour. It's probably 20 minutes for chop suey, fried rice, orange chicken, Kung po, and 6 egg rolls. I mention this because they walked in and ordered and left with their food in about twenty minutes. Maybe have the owner answer the phone or run the kitchen instead of being the busy boy. $17 lesson learned. Not pleased and telling everyone I know on FB.

This place is "the" place for Chinese cuisine. I used to bring my grandmother here when she was alive. She looooooved the Egg Foo Yung. I myself, prefer the beef chop suey. I don't know what they do to that beef but it is so tender and oh so good. I love everything I've ever eaten there, from their egg rolls to the won ton soup. Their lunch specials are reasonably priced, and they give you enough for 2 people. Bruce the owner, is a great host and all the people are really nice. I'll keep coming back to this treasure.

This has to be the best Chinese restaurant on the South Side, if not all of Chicago. Everything here is worth ordering, and the crab rangoon and egg rolls are the absolute best. I lived in North Carolina, and this is the first place I go, even before pizza.

Best Chinese in the area. Delicious eats always served with a smile. Whenever I'm in town, eggrolls are a must... practically, daily. Excellent lunch specials and dinner is reasonable too. A real winner.

My family has been going to Gum Wah for at least 25 years. Bruce (owner) and his family is always welcoming and the conversations with him are awesome. Oh, and the food is absolutely delicious. My dad always liked the Beef egg Foo Young *minus onion,* my mom always ordered the Schezuan shrimp, super spicy and I always bounced around and tried different foods. Never a disappointing trip! Highly recommended!

Great food and at a great price!!! The Crab Rangoon is an amazing appetizer. My favorite entree is the sweet and sour chicken, it's always fresh and tasty. The owner Bruce is a really great host.

Set your GPS to take you here after a respectful visit to Bachelor's Grove Cemetery. You won't be disappointed. The food at Gum Wah is your standard Chinese American fare. The egg rolls were tasty but on the small side (cheap though, should have ordered more). The beef and tomato was yummy -- w/fresh chucks of peppers, tomatoes and onions in a delicious sauce. They were doing a great carry out business when we stopped in. The customer services was great. I am not sure why other folks are talking about. Bruce (the owner) could not have been nicer and provided exceptional customer service. Also, he was very friendly w/all of the carry out folks, taking specially care to accommodate a blind gentleman and his seeing-eye dog. Very touching. Gum Wah is a through back to a less hectic time, technology-driven time. I bet it is wonderful to site in the red booth and drink tea, enjoy hot soup and good company on a snowy winters day. We will be back!

I really like this spot. I don't eat at china town.. but I really enjoyed the food. I usually order out but last week I dined it, its not the most visually appealing but I was very impressed with the level of customer service. The owner waited on us personally and he was very pleasant. For the people that eat here it is clearly about the food, not the neighborhood, location or the nice decor..lol.. it might also have something to do with the owner who tries very hard with the customers. Located right next to midlothian train station.

I pass by this establishment so many times in a single week that I often jokingly use it as a mile-marker as to what my location is. All joking aside--Gum Wah serves it up and they serve it up BIG! Contrary to your initial impressions upon first glance. Gum Wah is not your average hole-in-the-wall restaurant. Oh no, dear readers--Gum Wah has been in Midlothian since the late 1950's! Their portion sizes are huge! Instead of getting egg rolls and crab rangoons we opted for the sampler which was around the same price when I brought it home I realized that--THE FOOD WENT ON FOR DAYS!!!! We also got the Hong Sue and Orange Chicken, both were fantastic and upon the conclusion of eating our fill we looked at each other and agreed that we'd never joke about Gum Wah ever again.

Gum Wah is a great little restaurant in Midlothian. The owner is nice and food is priced very reasonably for the quality. It was recently renovated and it looks great. Orange chicken is my favorite food there, but everything is good. Definitely worth trying.

Placed a large order for family and friends with the anticipation of extra, extra spicy Chinese food. This was made very clear to the individual who took my order. Sadly, I am, as my guests, are so disappointed that our order was exactly what was NOT ordered. When you place a "made to order" dish, it is what you should receive. I need not order Thai food as this owner directed to me. If you could not creat spicy dishes, as you have in the past, then educate your staff to communicate this new policy of yours that now gum wah only has one level of heat. I will never order from here again.

Terrible American/Asian food. Snippy owner. We were in the neighborhood visiting a store and friends recommended this place as really good food. Obviously my friends have no taste. The owner advised he's owned this place for 21 years. Obviously he's made no effort into it. The inside is old with pink booths, pink and chrome chairs that look like they came out of a 50's ice cream parlor. The bathroom obviously has not had a good washing. We ordered the combo appetizer platter which was the standard Americanized fried items. Crab Rangoon, sweet BBQ pork, tempura shrimp, nasty eggrolls and tasteless potstickers. The owner kept talking to us like we've never been in an Asian restaurant. Funny as I typically go to Chinatown to eat Asian food and live 60 miles west. He went so far as so explain the significance of red to the Chinese like we were some kids. I asked the owner for shrimp with lots of vegetables and he kept saying Seafood Kow. I kept saying I want shrimp with lots of vegetables and he reiterated his comment while getting a bit hostile. I did not want a variety of seafood, I only wanted shrimp with vegetables and extra garlic. He made some snippy comment about what I was asking for and that he was replying accordingly. I told him he wasn't listening. Chicken fried rice was also ordered. As I suspected I received seafood kow. The owner asked how everything was and I replied that he didn't listen to what I ordered, was very argumentative and we would never be back nor recommend this place. I laughed as he was shocked and tried to apologize and didn't even give a discount on the bill. We paid our bill and left.

The popularity of Chinese food in America can be adjudicated by the appearance of China Town in many major cities in the United State of America. The popular trend of ordering or opting for Chinese take away food isn't unknown in America. Chinese take away food comes to rescue when you're too tired from work or too exhausted to cook. No one can resist the temptation of eating spicy noodles, shrimp, chicken, beef or pork cooked in the sweet and spicy sauce. The cooking method of authentic Chinese food is a lot different compared to what is served in America.
Generally, Chinese use dark meat small bones and organs to cook dishes but this changes when you are eating American-Chinese fusion food prepared using white boneless meat cooked with broccoli, carrots and onions. Back in China, the food is less spicy and oily as they favor steaming and braising method for cooking the most popular dishes. So, if you have a taste for authentic Chinese food, then try finding a real Chinese restaurant in the city. You can also try the most popular fusion Chinese food like Pecking Duck, Chicken Feet, Hot Pot, Shrimp Dumpling Soup, Mapo Tofu, Wontons, Chop Suey, Egg Rolls and not to forget Fortune Cookies.
There are not many restaurants in America serving authentic Chinese food. A little research on Restaurant Listings directory can help you locate the best Chinese restaurants in the city. Chinese cuisine is continuously evolving, and you can find a variety of dishes categorized as the food for lactose intolerant, gluten intolerant, vegan, vegetarian, and diabetic friendly. So, if you have a group of friends with different taste patterns, save the hassle and visit the nearest Chinese restaurant in your city.
