i have been eating here since the place opened, and ate there recently twice, the food is as wonderful as ever, my mom ,sister wife and i ordered a wide variety of items, there is no menu to speak of so we just told our server what we wanted and as stated in other reviews the service can be a bit slow but the food is well worth the wait we had palomilla, ropa vieja, pollo a la palomilla and yucca and fried maduros.... along with both white rice and beans and moros which is black beans and rice mixed together.... all in all a classic cuban feast all for under 50 dollars incl tip i will keep coming back as i have for decades

After visiting Illinois in December, this place was the perfect ending to my trip. When my boyfriends parents used to live in Chicago after arriving from Cuba, this was one of the places they visited often. The owner, Prado, who is now much older is the sweetest man you will ever meet. His son works right next door and occasionally drops in through out the day to help him. He is also a great, great person! Originally, my boyfriend and I came here because we had heard so many great stories of his parents as teenagers going to grab some dinner after high school. We just felt we needed to check it out for ourselves. First off, the owner has been running the business for more than 40 years. The neighborhood used to be filled with Cuban restaurants, bakeries, and fun night clubs. Now, El Prado, is practically one of the only authentic Cuban Restaurant in that neighborhood. The Mexican population has grown and most of the restaurants that once used to be Cuban are now Mexican taco shops. We came to El Prado twice during our visit. My boyfriend and I sat down for some food and coffee and we all shared some stories with the owner and his son. It was pretty quiet, and only a few customers came in every so often. More for subs, coffee, and the daily special. The owner and his son told us so many stories about the place. How it used to run, how business was back in the day, and how they are still fortunate to have the opportunity to serve to the public. They really, really, really love their business. You can tell. Every time they spoke about it, their faces would light up with joy. It is a clean restaurant, with a lot of space, and a traditional design. The food... smells AMAZING! We enjoyed the daily special which was rice, yucca, and Pork in a yummy yellow sauce. Do not expect a five star meal, this is a family owned Cuban restaurant. The type of food your grandma makes with love, and it is damn GOOD! We fell in love with the place not only because it reminded us of home, but because of the stories we shared and the heart and love they had for their business. We saw some photos on their walls and spoke for about three hours. What an experience! I hope to go back and visit soon and you should too! The owner and his son are so amazing! Give this place an opportunity even if its to listen to some old stories.

This place is a great old fashioned Cuban restaurant. Nothing fancy. You go here for the food plain and simple. The owner prepares Old Fashioned, authentic, home cooked cuban food. The ropa vieja, congri, arroz blanco, frijoles negros and cuban sandwich are what I have tried and they are made with many years of experience and lot's of love. A great pit stop to sit up on the stool at the counter and upgrade from fast food at lunch time or enjoy a nice cup of cafe cubano and read the paper. I will be enjoying many lunches here in the near future.

Diners, drive-ins and dives -- oh my! Definitely a dive with minimal concern for the customer. THE FOOD was very average. I ordered the steak sandwich which didn't seem to have much flavor and was so dry I could have choked on it (in fact, I couldn't even finish that mother sucker)! Steak sandwich = 3 stars (because I have experienced soooooooo much better)! My friend enjoyed the Cubanito sandwich, which she thought was fairly good. She indicated that her sandwich was bland and not as tender as she had hoped for. Her rating for the Cubanito is three stars. We will not be returning to this dive. We were in Oak Park, IL to see a play so we thought we would try this place based on the fact that it was nearby and we needed to eat somewhere quickly. We only had 1-1/2 hours to kill before going to the play. Yeah, you can stand there for a while before the Owner/Cook comes to take your order. At this place you have to walk in and yell out "Quiero ordenar" (I want to order) otherwise you may never get quick service here. Hey, this is America so after being in the USA for over 30 years you would think that the Owner (Pedro) would make the effort to communicate in English. I speak four foreign languages, including Spanish, so I can carry on a conversation, read, write and speak Spanish, and even serve as a Translator/Interpreter. My friend doesn't speak a word of Spanish so I placed her order too. In one of the other reviews here, a Yelper stated that this place will not be around for long and indicated that if this joint was located in Miami, FL that Pedro would be a billionaire. Sweetheart, that is plain B.S. This place wouldn't last one week in Miami, FL. The only reason this restaurant may not be around for long is because the Owner is apathetic, is stubborn, not customer-service oriented, refuses to speak English, and is a grumpy old man who needs to retire. Put it to rest Pedro and close it down! Pedro may be a culinary genius, as stated by Eduardo, but when it comes to people skills and customer service Pedro is not a genius. (I could have used a really bad word here, but I will not). If you don't know how to speak Spanish, don't come here. In fact, if you speak any other language, don't waste your time patronizing this shack. We were disappointed with the customer service here. The Owner's negative attitude and lack of communicating in English were even worse. SERVICE = 0 stars (it is non-existent) Customer-service = 0 stars Price-point = 4 stars Food = 3 stars Decor = 0 stars Hospitality = 0 stars

Here's a place where you can step back in time. 80 year old owner has worked this place for 41 years. Small, simple, and cash only. Go for the ambiance, the authentic food plus the portions and prices are great too. Great place to practice your Spanish speaking skills, if you have some. Worth a trip.

Best Cuban Restaurant in Chicago. Croquettes, masas de puerco, and tostones are some of my favorites, but everything is good. Very authentic.

"If El Prado was located in Miami, FL, Pedro (the owner) would be a Billionaire." I have heard this sentiment expressed several times in the the past 30 years that I have attended this gem. It is above and beyond the best Cuban food in this state and possibly the country. Low frills, un-assuming, and understated in it's presentation and locale. However, everything else is exceptional in authenticity and quality. Pedro the Chef/Owner is a tempermental yet loveable culinary genius who alone is worth the dining experience, especially if you can speak Spanish to him. The Ropa Vieja (Shredded Beef in Tomato, Garlic, and Pepper sauce) is as addicting as anything you will ever have. The Steak (Bistec Palomilla) and Chicken Steak are both juicy and flavorful. The Masas de Puerco (Pork Loin chunks) are so good that people who do not normally eat pork make an exception for Pedro's dish. Do not let the neighborhood and the ambience dissuade you. This place will not be around forever, so if you like Cuban food try this restaurant. I promise, you will LOVE Cuban food after.

I'm being generous in my rating. They seem like nice people, really. But since I was on a roll based upon Yelper help, I thought I'd give it a stab since I was nearby. When I saw the place and thought it might have been shut down, I should have stuck with that. I walk in and there's an old man working there that comes to the front (there's a counter with stools) and he just looks at me, kinda like I don't belong. It's lunch time and there is nobody in the place at all. I ask for a menu and he hands me one. There's a confusing bunch of items, with only a few with prices. I bumble around and order the Cuban Steak and rice with black beans. I hear some banging around and some sizzle and it's off to being made. About 5 mins later, the steak arrives, paper thin and covered with diced onion and some parsley. That's it. The rice is almost black from the beans and it didn't seem too fresh or tasty. It was all sort of weird and seemed like I might have stepped into a time warp. I will write this one off to me knowing better. Save your money... it was $8.50 for a very sad meal.

While there are several Cuban restaurants in Chicago, this place is the pinnacle of Cuban food! Every Cuban in Chicago knows this and yet it has managed to be "lost on the radar"........... There is no Palomilla served anywhere that comes close to this one and Masas de Puerco when available are sublime. All the usual Cuban fare can be found here. If you live near Oak Park or near by in Maywood, you should give it a try. Pricing is a la carte: One can choose whatever combination you may want. Service may be slow when crowed but definitely worth it.

Really good food! I had ropa de (something...I forgot the name!!) Very succulent, slow cooked, tender and flavorful. The family that runs the place is really friendly and nice as well. I'm definitely coming back here again.

This is the best Cuban restaurant in Chicago. This is as authentic as it gets. I love how it still has the old school feel to the inside of it. You just don't see this anymore. I've never had a bad meal from here. Prado is the best!!! He still puts his heart and soul into cooking here. You can't go wrong with whatever you order. My favorite is their ropa vieja with black beans and rice or ropa vieja sandwich. Excellent beans and rice!! The best part of going here is talking to Prado. If your in the neighborhood give them a try. You won't be disappointed
