We had our family reunion at Honeybakers last year. The place is very quaint and the smell of pie and cake will meet you at the door. The bakery itself was clean and the servers were very polite and respectful. My glass of tea never went empty and I rarely saw the waitress feel it up. The service was not overbearing or smothering and the employees worked smoothly around us. The food was amazing!! I had the grilled cheese and tomato soup with ravioli. I was stuffed after I ate. However, I wasn't so full that I didn't have a piece of key lime pie and it was out of this world!!! I honestly walked in with very low expectations about this place and walked out a huge fan!! If you are in Marion and you find yourself looking for a great place to eat a quick lunch, look no further than Honeybakers!

The best food and ultimate desserts in all of southern Illinois! I had a piece of Coconut pie from Patti's then went to Honeybakers and it was so much better! Fresh foods and delicious desserts! Love their food!

Yum! My fiancé and I were driving through Illinois and decided to stop here. Normally we go to a chain restaurant when we are on the road, something familiar. We are SO GLAD we stopped here! Everything was delicious! Homemade everything - best potato salad and coleslaw. Homemade rolls with honey butter served with every dish. Fresh tasty iced peach tea (other flavors too but do not recall). Lots of menu options - southern spin on the food - pulled pork, etc.

Option No 1 was gone so we found a different option, Honeybakers restaurant in Marion. Yelp rated Honeybakers 4 stars. When we found the restaurant it was located in a strip mall. The inside was very old and dated. Just Inside the door there is a display case displaying their baked goods. Even with the 4 star rating I didn't have very high expectations based in my initial reaction to the exterior strip mall facade & dated interior decor, but first impressions can be deceiving. We was pleasantly surprised. The service and food was very good. Our waitress and other staff members were very friendly & helpful explaining menu items. First she brought these hot rolls and butter with honey mixed in that just melted in your mouth. Then we ordered our dinners. My wife ordered light. She ordered a delicious tomato soup, salad and a baked potato to die for. This potato came with butter and brown sugar on the side (to die for). Her brother ordered a turkey sandwich that came with tomatoes, bacon & slathered with melted cheddar cheese & fries. Good, but very messy. I ordered the pork lovers special. This was a sandwich with roasted pulled pork, baked ham & bacon bits (Didn't see much) & barbecue sauce. This was pretty good, but much better with the barbecue sauce. This was also messy to eat. The people working in the restaurant were all very friendly and outgoing. When they could out we were going to Shawnee National Park & The Garden of the Gods) they gave us additional information on potential places to visit in the park. Very nice people & good food equal a good dining experience.

Delicious. I travel a lot for work and often plan my travel around being able to eat here. Super friendly staff. Great pie selection. I don't have enough room to type about everything that is great about this place.

A mixed review from a group of 7..... Jambalaya was great, poppyseed chicken casserole so so, chicken was dry, BLT platter good, turkey platter with mashed potatoes and green beans: all of it cold

Always a good place to eat. The pie is amazing and the variety of comfort food is nice.

Valentine dinner @ Honeybaker's was awesome..the prime rib (special) was cooked just right. You can't beat the rolls with honey butter and their deserts are the best in town!

Marion's best kept secret!!! After seeing commercials on tv for this place we finally decided to give it a try. We were seated immediately and within minutes had our sweet tea and rolls on the table. Food portions were very generous, the restaurant and rest rooms were very clean. Our server did a great job keeping our glasses filled and table spot less. I had the roast beef which was laid on top of mashed potatoes and toast. Finished the meal off with the biggest and tastiest piece of coconut pie I had ever seen! Great experience, we'll definitly be back!

Great selections, great food, and perfect place for a weekday lunch.

I've eaten here a few times, mostly to no complaint. Unfortunately, I just had to walk out of here after sitting for 45+ minutes over lunch and never getting food. The last we heard from our waitress was 25 minutes prior to leaving, she said,"your food will be right out." May not ever return. Wasted hour, now eating at Arby's.

Perfect southern style green beans. I loved them. Homemade rolls and bread delicious. Pulled pork BBQ was good, as a woman from the Deep South, I'm a bit particular about my BBQ and this was great but not quite perfect. Had to pour my BBQ sauce on top of my pulled pork sandwich. Most authentic joints in the south would've had it mixed in already and the sauce was much more northern style. Service was excellent too. If we ever pass through southern Illinois again we will likely stop here.

Went to Honeybakers regularly while living in the Marion area. The way I remembered tj was Fridays they have poppyseed chicken on special, this may have changed since then. However, the service was always top notch and the poppyseed chicken exquisite. Oddly enough I first fell in love with poppyseed chicken during my days at Shawnee Community College and thanks to connections, I obtained the recipe and it is now a staple in my home. I'm planning a trip to Southern Illinois in a few weeks and have business to do in Marion, Honeybakers will definitely be brought up as a lunch location that day

Very good food. I've had the same waitress both times I've been there and she was very sweet and attentive. Down home basics. The interior needs a bit of an uplift in my opinion. The pies look so cool! I had the coconut icebox cake once and wasn't really impressed. Keep it up guys.

Just OK,,,,,had the club sandwich which was OK and the creamy slaw was excellent, but my mother's BBQ thing was subpar she said.....plus there were overhead lights that kept coming on and going off by themselves....disturbing....this place good be a home run is they made the menu smaller and just concentrated on 5-6 items. The pies in the display case looked good.....to me this is more of a coffee and pie place.

I came here and the food was very good. I got macaroni and cheese and chips for my side. The food came with rolls, which were given to us with our food, which isn't a big deal, except we were given plates when we were seated. The whipped butter for the rolls is really awesome. I would say our waitress wasn't very friendly, she didn't check in very often and she forgot to bring me a refill on my drink when I had asked for one. It's a cute little place that has good down home dishes. They also have a pie case, I didn't try any for dessert, but hopefully it tastes as good as it looks!

I never give reviews for restaurants that I've been to only once, but considering that this restaurant is in Marion, Illinois and I live in Chicago, I doubt that I'll have many opportunities to frequent this place. Regardless, I've rarely had the chance to experience such a heartwarming meal than the one I had tonight at Honeybakers. I'm down here from Chicago for work. My client told me to avoid the plethora of chain restaurants that litter the streets in and around Marion (and no, he didn't put it in those terms). He told me that I had to try this place that serves home-style southern comfort food. It took me a while to initially find the restaurant. It's located in a remote strip mall immediately off of the main road that cuts through Marion. I walked in and thought the restaurant hadn't opened for the evening because I was the only one in there. I took my time to go over each dish that they served, including a number of sandwiches and bbq. I ended up choosing the Honeybaker platter and a diet coke. In no time at all, out came a cup of vegetable barley, Honeybaker's signature bread with honey butter, and my platter that was packed with green beans cooked in ham hock, meatloaf, and mashed potatoes with brown gravy. Was it the best southern food I've ever had? No, not by any stretch of the imagination. However, it was above decent given the price point, and that it hit the spot after a long day of driving to get here from the airport in St. Louis and client meetings. What truly made the night was the hospitality. Having been a server myself at Sunshine Cafe in the Andersonsville neighborhood of Chicago, I have somewhat of an idea of what it means to have good service. The waitress was extremely nice and attentive. At the end of my meal, I chose a Reese's pie to take back with me to my hotel. My server asked me if I wanted a diet coke and another piece of the Honeybaker bread and honey butter. I gratefully obliged. The dessert was top shelf. Not too sweet and made my typing this brief for work a bit easier. That's all I can really ask for. So, in short, if you ever find yourself in Marion or if you're in St. Louis and you don't mind taking a somewhat long-distance drive, be sure to stop at Honeybakers. It certainly beats the Steak and Shake that's directly across the street from my hotel room.

Jambalaya sucked. It was like eating rice in an excessive amount of broth. For some reason the food doesn't look like traditional versions that I've seen. The chicken and dumplings is completely beige and looks bland even though it isn't. Jambalaya is usually red, but it was multicolored and unappealing. The broth should have been a thicker consistency.

Just ate there again and the Best Ever club is now on my list of favorites. Great sandwich!

We were in town again over the weekend visiting family and stopped in. Things were great as usual. My wife had the BBQ chicken tacos which were a lot better than I anticipated. They put their coleslaw on top, it made them really good. I was so surprised how much I'd like the smokey flavor on a taco. I had the HBLT. I love BLT's and this definitely satisfied! The bacon was really crispy and the tomato was perfectly ripe. Had a sweet potato as a side. Wish we could get here more often. Love this place!

I visited Honeybakers at 3:00 PM on a Sunday. I was by myself and the only customer in the place. I ordered the Turkey plate. It came with salad, mashed potatoes and gravy, green beans, and a roll. The roll was first to arrive. It was warm, fresh and fluffy. They only served honey butter with it. I wish they had offered regular butter as well. The roll was delicious. The salad came out and about one minute later, they brought out the rest of the meal. This is inexcusable. A reasonable amount of time must be allowed for the diner to finish the salad before serving the entree. It's not like they were busy and needed to rush things out. This is a basic rule of serving. Anyone who violates that rule just doesn't care. I stuffed down my salad, which was fresh and crispy and turned to my plate. The only thing on my plate that was actually hot was the mashed potatoes. I don't know if they nuked everything and it heated unevenly or what, but my green beans actually had cold places in it. The turkey was warm but not hot. I ate everything as is because my server was nowhere to be found. The Turkey was not straight turkey off the bone. It was somehow processed and had a different texture and even a couple of bubbles in it. The green beans would have been good if they had been hot. Back to the service. My server never once checked on me. Several of the employees were in the back having a fun chat while I was eating. At least one of them could have checked on me. When she dropped off the check, she asked me if I wanted desert. I asked her what they had and she listed several types of pie, mentioning a type of chocolate pie. Someone overheard her and said that there was no chocolate pie. I really wanted chocolate pie. I ended up with the key lime pie. I will say that it was fresh and delicious. I'm pretty sure they make their pies in house. As I was checking out, guess what I saw in their pie case? Chocolate pie. Come on folks, get your act together. Even in a small town like Marion, there are too many other choices to give this place another try. EDIT 3/27/12 - I received a very nice email from the owner of Honeybakers. He acknowledged some of the problems and explained that he had already put several fixes in place. Considering the very professional response that I received, I would absolutely give this restaurant another try.

When we walked in it was apparent this was going to be a great meal. In the case there were a variety of baked pies & cakes. The place was fairly busy at 1:00, but we were quickly seated and in less than 15 minutes of ordering had hot fresh meals before us. Served on fresh bread baked there my selection -an open face sandwich was a delight to view and eat. The waitress was attentive and the only regret was we were so stuffed that wee didn't have took. For any of that pie!

Not sure what the low ratings are for - Honeybakers is friendly and delicious, even if they are a tad overpriced. The portions are rather small, I thought, but everything I have ever ordered has been very tasty and high quality. They have a beautiful display of cakes, pies, and treats at the front counter, slices of which make excellent desserts for after your dining experience.

My wife, mother, mother-in-law, father-in-law, brother, and I all went to Honeybakers this past Mother's Day. I couldn't decide how I wanted to review this place, and settled on two stars, in the end. That's not for the food - my jambalaya was solid, spicy, and reasonably-sized. The dumplings were very tasty. The rolls and honey butter were so good I could have eaten four of them. My wife liked her ... mason jar full of stuff. And overall, the food was solid four-star-range. (The desserts were fantastic, by the by.) What really sucked out loud was the service. I understand that the Saturday before Mother's Day can be busy. But there's no excuse, in my mind, for only having one waitress on such a day. There's even less excuse for other employees and managers just standing around or frittering away and not at least helping with *drink refills.* Many tables weren't even bussed during the whole time we were there. The ... pastry girl? ... stood around, counted stuff once in a while, and - when asked to help with an order or even a drink - just said, "Oh, let me get [the waitress]." There was someone who looked vaguely managerial there, who helped on the checkout line but with nothing else. All in all, it was a fiasco. Our meal took at least 30 extra minutes of just waiting - we waited at least 10 to place our orders, 10 more for the check, and so much time for refills we should have gotten them ourselves. It was like everyone had one certain job, and didn't help with anything outside of that - not even the manager. It's a shame, because the food is quality. The management just needs to step up and run a restaurant.

This place is amazing! First off it is in a strip mall and a bit hidden. Upon entering it doesn't look like much, just some tables and not much to the decor but the food more than made up for it. They have dessert case when walking in and it all looked delish. My son ordered the lunch jumbalaya which came with salad for a side. He found it quite tasty but was just adequate size portion for the money. My meal was the Memphis style pulled pork and it was both huge and extremely flavorful. Comes with small coleslaw and 1 side. I choose the baked beans and the were spicy good. Forgot to mention meal begins with homemade baked roll which was quite large with honey butter it was one if the best ever. Couldn't pass up the lucious desserts and they give you a price break if you order two. Son had choc peanut pie and I had triple layer choc peanut butter cake. Cake is like my all time favorite food and this one was one of if not the best I have ever had. Son loved the pie too and with so much food we brought half of the desserts home for tomorrow. Service was friendly and efficient. Definitely try this place. I will look forward to returning on my next visit to SIU
