Spicy pork bulgogi is fantastic - I would travel for it. The ramen is instant ramen noodles in a pretty good broth. My wife was upset that she paid for a dish that had noodles that you could buy for a quarter. I thought it tasted fine, but that's still pretty ridiculous (it was served with the noodles still formed in a block). Not much seating here. We were waiting with our infant for a table to open up and when the first one did, an old couple just walked right in front of us and took it before the people cleared the table. Luckily another table opened up shortly after.

Tanaka Sushi is a great little place for a quick sushi fix. You order at the counter to go or eat in. It's very casual and the sushi quality is quite good. My son comes often and enjoys the bento box. Today we had the tanaka box which is a good deal for $15.99; includes two rolls, sashimi pieces and sushi pieces and miso soup. I highly recommend this sushi place.

The good thing about switching to a job in the burbs is all the "new" places I can try for lunch. I had a hankering for a bento box today and so I found this spot on Yelp and headed over. For only $11, you can get a bento box that includes your choice of beef or chicken teriyaki, miso soup, salad, white rice and a 6 piece California roll - and a soda. I was really impressed by the quality of the chicken - totally fresh and cooked perfectly. I'm not a fan of the normal Japanese salad dressing (too oniony for me), but I ate around the sauce and finished the rest of the meal in no time. The place was busy and most of the tables were full, so I took a spot at the window ledge on a bar stool - very comfortable! I will totally be back and try some of the other items on the lunch menu soon!

Tanaka Sushi is absolutely number one Japanese food and Korean food ! I've been eating from Tanaka Sushi since 2006 when they were still located in the food court in back of Naperville's Super Asia Market store (now closed) before Tanaka moved down the street to their current location. Everything is always top quality, fresh, healthy and super clean. Everything is always so distinctly flavorful, uniquely tasty and super fresh, every single time. In no particular order, my absolute top favorite menu items (of the many) are: 1.) Lobster Tempura Roll 2.) Sashimi Rice 3.) Spicy Seafood Noodles 4.) Philadelphia Roll 5.) Bento Box Chicken OR Beef 6.) Salmon OR Beef OR Chicken Teriyaki 7.) Tanaka Box 8.) Spicy Squid 9.) Bulgogi 10.) Atlantic Roll To top if off, their prices are, surprisingly, very good and reasonable.

Hungry at 8:30 PM on a Tuesday night, and not sure where to get something healthy, primal/paleo friendly, and delicious. After a quick Yelp search, we decided to finally try Tanaka thanks to the many strong reviews it's received. Since it was 8:30 by the time we ordered, we figured takeout was most appropriate (plus we had Grimm and New Girl to watch at home!) Here's the skinny: Sashimi RIce: 8.95 - We thought this was chirashi, but it was actually Korean salad/rice with cubed fish. First look, the salad/fish/rice looked gigantic! Seriously, it filled the whole take out container. Second look, there really wasn't as much fish as we would've liked. Upon eating, and mixed with some delicious Korean gochujang, the flavor was excellent, and we were STUFFED by this dish alone... (we each got one). It came with miso soup, rice, plenty of tasty veggies, and enough cubed fish for at least a bit of protein in every two bites. Would definitely get again! (btw, I think this comes with miso... we had a nice bowl of warm miso that was surprisingly tasty!) Unagi: Tasted fine, just like regular unagi, but without the crispyness that some places are able to add on top thanks to blow torch or strong final heating. We like the crispyness, so it was disappointing not to have it. Super white Tuna: Again, fine. Flavor was spot on, texture was a bit softer than we're used to (possibly due to transport time from take out?) Overall, not bad. Verdict: All in all, a great value and pretty respectable quality from what we tried so far. We were trying to be frugal by getting the Sashimi Rice dish (which is seriously good stuff), so it's hard to gauge the quality of the fish alone. Perhaps next time, we'll come to strictly try nigiri/sushi to really get a better feel for their quality. But overall, we like! And we'll likely be back!

Tanaka Sushi is a place I consider a hole-in-the wall- I would have NEVER realized it existed but my Mom heard of it from a friend at work today. My parents and I stopped by for dinner, and it was surprisingly busy! There was a larger family sitting in the back, 2 others eating at a table, and a handful of people who came in and got orders to-go. I think this place is popular for take-out. It being my family's first time there, we were confused and realized that it's a **self-serve place. You order at the front, pick up/ return your food at the side, and you grab everything you need at the counter too (water, chopsticks, napkins, etc). I'm a sashimi fan, and while I didn't get it- I think the Tanaka Box is an INCREDIBLE value for $15.99. 9 pieces of fish+ 9 pieces of sushi + Miso soup... Looking back, I definitely regret not getting it especially since my favorite types of sashimi are salmon and tuna. We got the Medium sushi tray for $45 to split between 3. I think this was a good value too (but a common special/tray for a sushi places). The nigiri was very fresh, and sushi was tasty (4 different rolls). My parents also got 2 miso soups ($1 each). I'll be back, probably for take-out next time, but definitely to try the Tanaka Box (I'm still in shock about that price). The soups are also $8-10 which is very affordable, and I saw the large family in the back enjoying their bowls! ***For the wasabi sensitive (like myself) there is a tiny dab of wasabi in the nigiri sushi. Ps. Please excuse the Medium sushi tray picture- it's missing one salmon sushi, part of the spicy tuna toll (there are 6 pieces total), veggie sushi piece, and California roll piece.

Fresh. You get more than what you pay for! I'm not a huge fan of spicy tuna because the tuna usually tastes like grounded fish, but here, they toss Amal chunks of tuna in your spicy tuna, which actually makes it taste like sushi! The fish is fresh. I usually order sashimi and wait a couple of minutes because the temperature of the fish makes it taste like they took it straight out of the fridge but here, I can eat it right away and still expect greatness. The atmosphere is quiet and calm. Not the fanciest Japanese restaurant but definitely good enough to enjoy some quality sushi. Also, FYI, the owner is Korean so half of their menu is Korean food. Their Korean food is pretty good too. I'd say it's a nice place if you are in the mood for a quiet, quick meal while enjoying good food!
(4)Diana J.
Got take out here- one weird thing was that they packaged each dish in its individual plastic bag, so I ended up having to juggle 4 bags to my car. Prices are reasonable and taste is decent if you don't want to trek far for Korean/sushi. The bulgogi beef was sliced very thick, not the typical beef that I see and was just mediocore. The spicy seafood noodle soup was pretty good and the gyoza is really deep fried mandoo (tasted like it could have been bought frozen?). The sashimi rice was good, there was plenty of fish and it was fresh tasting- only thing that threw me off was that there was no rice, just salad, so maybe they should name it sashimi salad?
(3)Lauren H.
I love this place. Everything on the menu is good and fresh. I usually get sushi, but the bowls and soups are good too. The only downside to this place is its small. If u have a party larger than 2 people it may be difficult to find seats together.
(4)Susie C.
My friend took us here for lunch. I really like this place! It's a fast food Korean/Japanese cafe. Decently priced food - I love the idea and the food selection is plenty! I ordered the bibimbop - pretty tasty! My husband had their chicken fried rice which he liked, too. Couple of my friends ordered their sashimi rice dish which both said was good and very refreshing - chunks of fish on top of a bed of salad. My friend also ordered a spicy noodle dish to share with the table which we all enjoyed. I really like this place, but too bad it's so far away. I wish they'll be building more locations in the Chicago/Chicagoland area!
(5)Jonathan S.
This is a great place. The food is incredibly good and very fresh. Our Japanese friends tell us it's totally authentic sushi. You know it's authentic Korean food by the number of Korean people eating here all the time. We eat here at least once a week.
(5)J C.
My family and I frequent Tanaka when we are craving some good Korean soup dishes and/or fresher Sushi. The owners are nice, and it's a serve yourself kind of a restaurant with a small cafeteria feel to it which I usually don't care for much, but it works for this place. My favorite order for lunchtime is typically the Tanaka Box - thick slices of sashimi, delicious spicy tuna or salmon roll, and good sized nigiri. I also love their BiBimBaps & Rice bowls when I want a lighter meal. Most of the soup dishes are pretty close to homemade quality, and I know my family loves a variety of soups here such as Kimchi Jjigae, Spicy seafood noodle soup, and several of their other seafood / spicy soups with rice. It's easy to miss Tanaka (in my opinion) while driving down Ogden Avenue if you aren't looking for it. It is located on Ogden in a small strip mall, but I would have never seen it if someone hadn't told me about it. If you love a home-cooked type Korean meal with a cafeteria type feel or decent Sushi, Tanaka is the spot to try out!

We' be just moved from Chicago and found this restaurant on Yelp with rave reviews. Tried it yesterday for the first time with my two gourmand kids (4 and 9) and ordered the salmon teriyaki, shrimp tempura udon and shrimp fried rice!!! The two rice dishes included miso soup. We enjoyed everything. The flavors and presentation of the food were excellent. We thoroughly enjoyed the meal and so far our best find since we' ve moved to the burbs two weeks ago!! Oh it was so good that my kids asked to go back today to try other items on the menu... Today 5/6/15 I ordered the sashimi bowl, una don (eel on rice) and my 4 yo had a taste for tuna w/avocado maki!!! The raw fish in the sashimi was one of the freshest I have ever tasted... Yes and you can try it for your self at this awesome joint!!! You will be going back to try other items in the menu. They do not do delivery, just pick up!!! Additionally I like the feel and decor of this cafeteria-style restaurant. It's clean, feels current (not just a whole in the wall type place) and the proprietors are nice and pleasant. The chef and owner Mr Tanaka prepares the sushi offerings himself, so prepare yourself for a real treat, you deserve it :)) Thumbs Up Way Up for this sushi joint in Lisle.
(5)Hannah K.
Chef Tanaka's gyozas are probably the best I've ever had. His spicy tuna is second to non. The Red Dragon Roll is my favorite. I've had a lot off of this menu and it's all a sure bet. I moved so I don't get to go there very often but whenever I have sushi, I always wish it was nearby. For a fast causal sushi place, this is a five star.
(5)Jin Joo L.
It was previously, a 4 star review, would have been 5 for the last few times I went. But recently, picked up an order. First of all, I called asking if they had any soup like kalbi tang or not spicy... person responded saying they can make any soup not spicy or just use clear broth. So I said, nevermind. I didn't have a menu on me. When I got there the food was ready and I was so excited. I even tipped on the to-go. Then when I get home, there was only 1 soup for 2 orders of hwedup bop/ sushi over rice. I feel like my entire meal got ruined. I don't want to go back for 1 stupid soup. But at the same time, hwedup bop without soup is kinda bleh... so now I don't really feel like eating it. I ended up calling them to let them know and they offered a free soup because I suggested it. I just didn't want to eat it without any soup since I had been craving soupy things in the first place. So I went back and they were gracious enough to give me a refund as I returned my food. I was just really not feeling like eating anything after this. No one's fault or was it? But thinking of the time and wasted gas, going back and forth,... I should really have a to go menu in my car not at home.

One man operation. Seems to know his walk in customers. Nice guy. Good is priced well. I didn't like the smell inside.. especially being a sushi place, but again saw customers getting food so figured I'll trust it.
(4)Patrick T.
Whenever i am in the Lisle/Naperville area and i feel like a Sushi dinner, the only place to come in mind is Tanaka Sushi. Great quality sushi that satisfies the Japanese craving without breaking the bank and also still head and shoulders above most other "Japanese" places. Everything I tried here is very good, but my personal favorites are the Philly Roll and the Spicy Shrimp Roll.
(5)Jeff N.
Food was ok. I feel I was duped by the reviews on YELP. I couldn't get passed the sewer smell as we entered. I must admit that I can't shop at H mart either for the same reason. Maybe it's not possible to have the freshest Fish without the smell? No, I think it is possible. It appeared to be a very tight knit group of mostly Korean customers the day we were there. I didn't really think it was inexpensive either as some reviews have said. One more thing: You return your dirty plates and utensils To the top of the counter where the food was completed and picked up.
(2)Margaret D.
I really enjoyed this place! As people have mentioned, it's not your typical setup but rather a "fast food" sushi place. The sushi rolls were very good but I am excited to go back and try the Korean food!
(4)christine a.
So delicious and cheap. The sashimi bowl is amazing!
(5)Tony M.
Great prices for the portion of tasty and fresh food. Everything is fresh and flavorful! The galbi I had was full of flavor and moist not dry! The meat was tender! No complaints here. The dining area is small, so be prepared to take out. Great selection of Korean and Japanese food! I love the pictures they provide to help you order! I helps a lot with pictures here so I can order quickly! I love this place!
(5)Nick B.
After having Ramen at a few places lately, we've had a bit of a craving for it. This was the only place we could find that sounded decent - until we ordered the ramen. If it wasn't Mr. Noodles in a bowl, it was the off-brand competitor, no better. VERY disappointed. I would not go back to this restaurant.
(2)Aijaz H.
My wife and I visited Tanaka recently. Sushi was fresh and tasted good. Spicy tuna was the best. I also ordered Shrimp fried rice and Spicy chicken Terriyaki. Chicken Terriyaki was good but Shrimp were tiny and had a bad smell to them. I would stay away from Shrimp fried rice may be go with Chicken fried rice if you want.

Tanaka Sushi is seriously amazing. Originally from LA, we decided to eat here for a quick lunch while on a short vacation trip. We were pleasantly surprised. The food was fresh and just simply delicious. It had a beautiful and mouthwatering presentation. It completely satisfied my sushi cravings. Also, the Korean food was so tasty and had the right amount of spiciness. Eating at Tanaka Sushi was a wonderful experience. I admire the chef's ability and his delicious creations. If I ever come back to Illinois, I will definitely come here to relive this delightful experience again!
(5)Jennie C.
The sushi tasted good and was super affordable, but it smelt very bad and made me feel sick. Also the bathroom was disgusting.
(3)Michelle S.
Tempora udon is super good and a good portion size. I am traveling for work and found this place for dinner. Might have to come back before I leave. Definitely recommend.
(5)Hyun J.
I have known the owner since he worked in his previous location. He has always made very quality food and I am really glad he has this location -- I am writing this review on a Friday afternoon and this place is packed! My favorite thing to get is the hwe dup bap. Unlike other restaurants, they give a good amount of sashimi and for a good price too!
(5)Michelle T.
The food is always delicious. Its hard to find a good Korean restaurant without having to go to the Schaumburg area. Make sure to try the Bulgogi or Tofu Soup!
(5)S H.
Like others have said, this is a smaller place with only a few tables. But don't let the setup stop you from trying their food. I had the spicy tofu soup and my husband got the sushi box. Both were really good. The sushi pieces were huge too! I highly recommend this place!
(5)Candice G.
Good food and great company, but when are restaurants gonna start serving miso in larger bowls... like a trough with a silo-sized back up, maybe? What? I like miso. I also like affordable and quality sushi in a casual atmosphere. Ya know, a place I can go in my everyday stretchy-pants, swimsuit bottoms underwear, sports bra and one of two t-shirts from Target that I keep in an every-other-day rotation. Lucky for me, I just found that place. Generous portions, great prices, speedy counter service and no wait to sit down on a Saturday evening like our first three choices, two of which probably wouldn't have been half as good as Tanaka, an easily overlooked strip mall gem. My bud Andres D and I were a pair of starvin' Marvins after a looong day working a booth at beer fest in 90 degree heat. I eyes *might* have been bigger than our stomachs, but we powered through and ate our way through two bowls of miso, a spicy tuna, a Cali roll, unagi, salmon, some shrimp thing (not a fan), their signature roll (GET THIS), and what I'm going to guess was a Philly roll that tasted like the greatest ham and cheese sandwich I've had. While there we saw the rest of the table were filled with non-English speaking (or at least non-English in that atmosphere) Asian people, including an Asian mother and her young son who bowed to the table next to them before leaving. So that means it's super Asian, right? Right? Either way, I'm craving it right now and I can't wait to go back and try their mega huge bibimbop bowl. I saw a guy there eating one of their dishes out of what looked those giant metal mixing bowls. Now just have to convince them them to use that bowl on some miso.
(4)Mike W.
Great sushi, tasty soup and good sushi.
(5)Michael N.
Really solid sushi. Tastes fresh and there's other options aside from the usual rolls. My personal favorite is the Sashimi Rice dish. While they don't really seem to have any lunch specials, the prices are still pretty reasonable. It's of course not a place to come if you're looking for a romantic dinner since it's a in and out kind of spot in a strip mall. But the food here is fantastic.
(5)Jim I.
Came for the reviews. Dead on. The food is fresh and the portions ate large. Well worth the trip.
(5)Danielle J.
My family and I ordered to go. They got the chicken teriyaki, chicken fried rice, and dumplings. I got the California roll, the crunch roll, and the Santa Fe roll. Everything was extremely delicious. The only complaint was the goyza sauce was very salty for the dumplings. The restaurant itself was very small but very clean. It's a little bit hidden in a small strip mall, so you have to really look for it. I will for sure be visiting again.
(5)Armil B.
Food was delicious. Slightly higher prices than what I would like to pay during lunch. I'm just a cheap bastard that way. I need to try more of their menu. The service was very good and the people a very nice. They are often busy. Just wish that the place was larger to accommodate more folks. I will come here for Korean food rather than visit the H-Mart food court.
(4)Andres D.
All Toyota Prius lookalike and I will get back to that statement in a second. My partner in crime Ms. Fancy leopard shoes Candice G. suggested yelp app led us to Tanaka Sushi of Lisle. As we walked in we were greeted by a lovely young lady eagerly awaiting to take order. Since it was our first visit we grabed a pencil and menu sheet and begin our sushi and roll journey. I agree with Candice, our eyes were hungry and I was checking everything in site...LOL! I am a miso soup junkie so you know I couldn't leave without trying a bowl. Service is super fast and product is fresh. I tend to not use a soup spoon when eating miso soup, so I pick it up and slurp it quietly. I pretty much enjoyed every bit of sushi we ordered (spicy tuna, salmon, unagi and even the shrimpy nemo thing). I absolutely loved the energy Tanaka brings with their little dine in spot. Its a beautiful decor and prices are reasonable. We definitely left with a sushi coma. Upon walking out I walked up to the wrong Toyota Prius, then I noticed quickly the next door hookah lounge's guest giving us the stink eye. Darn it! Wrong car ;)
(4)Katherine B.
I've had almost all of the rolls here. My two favorites are the Miami Fred roll and the red dragon roll. Everything is so good!
(5)Marianne D.
I love Tanaka! I discovered the chef when he was in an Asian mart before venturing out on his own. His sushi is very fresh, especially on Wednesdays for some reason. We would order weekly at work on what was dubbed "Sushi Wednesdays" and since I left my job, I am missing and craving his sushi. Chef Tanaka and his wife Jamie run the small restaurant. There is no wait staff - it's a place where you order your food and pick it up at the counter. My very favorite is the Tanaka box packed full of wonderful sushi, sashimi and maki. It comes with miso soup, too. The prices have gone up; they used to be very reasonable. I've also ordered my favorite maki and had them make up party platters for me. I would highly recommend this restaurant for sushi. I hope Tanaka stays in business a very long time!
(5)Pete B.
I was very excited to try Tanaka Sushi, not so much for the sushi, but more for their Japanese menu. Tanaka reminded me of local joints in Japan. Food was quick and relatively affordable. You stop there, eat, and leave. I was hoping it would be my new favorite lunch spot. I got the Tonkatsu Don. You can't really screw up the Tonkatsu Don, but I think they put wayyyy tooo much sweet sauce on there. The portion, unfortunately, was also small. It didn't really fill me up. Overall, the food would only get a 3/5 in my book, but I'm giving it a 4/5 just because of its concept. I guess I just feel nostalgic when I see places like Tanaka. I'll try their apparently better Korean menu next time.
(4)Elizabeth T.
+ Sushi? A+++++++ Delicious! + No muss, no fuss. This is a "cafeteria style" restaurant. You come in, you order right away, you pay, you sit down and wait for your food. Your food is called out, you pick it up from the counter, you eat. When you're done,
(4)Isabel G.
Good sushi option! Fair prices too
(5)Jeff G.
Tanaka Sushi is a cute, friendly place with a nice selection of options that will satisfy you and your party! The place is pretty small and I got tons of awesome feels upon entering. Service: The best! The person behind the counter helped me out with the veg. options and we ended up picking a delicious looking roll for my Dad. Food: Mmmmmmm! Tofu soup was spiced to perfection! Value: Awesome, given the above! Honestly, this place is a solid 4.5 stars but I haven't tried enough of the menu to give it "The 5". Seriously, stop reading and give this place a shot!
(4)Lee G.
I've been here several times now and I must say you really gotta catch Tanaka-san on a good day. Some days the fish is fresh tasting and others not so much. I still go here because it is close to home. I recommend the Tanaka box even though I hate the futomaki that comes with. I don't recommend the chef's choice of anything. Other than that this is still my go to sushi restaurant. Save your money on the chicken teriyaki and instead go with the bulgogi or bibimbap which is pretty good.
(3)Sara P.
When this place opened I thought it just a sushi place and I haven't been in the mood. Imagine my surprise to find it is Japanese and Korean. They didn't have everything I was looking for but good reason to get something new. There is a large variety for so small a restaurant and the people seem very nice, the hostess was torn between holding the door for me and my bags or running after the woman who left her credit card. I definitely plan to come back when my schedule allows. :)
(4)Priscilla I.
I'm so glad this place is across the street from me. I recently found out that owner of the sushi place inside Asia Supermarket started his own restaurant here. The taste of sushi here is GREAT especially for the price, and the korean food here is pretty good too.
(5)Suji C.
They have good sushi for a modest price. I love Spicy Tuna Rolls, and I like theirs the best in the general Naperville/Lisle/Plainfield area. Their sashimi rice is also good and you get a lot of sashimi with it -- you mix it with chojang, a Korean sweet and sour chili pepper sauce. Their sushi party trays are great for parties/dinners and are a good price (they come in 3 different sizes). For people in a hurry, they do have a limited number of ready-made sushi/sashimi plates. My 5-year-old twins love their udon (noodle soup) and pork katsu (like schnitzel, coated in breadcrumbs and fried -- they can also make it with chicken and fish). When I'm not in the mood for sushi, I like to get their salmon teriyaki. I haven't tried too many of their Korean dishes, although I imagine that they would be pretty good as well. The dining area isn't too big, so a lot of people get their food to go, which works well for many of their dishes. Overall, it's a great family-run place at a good price!
(5)Ellyn K.
Their fish for sushi got more fresh than the time when they were at Asia Market. I think that they are getting more customers at the new location and it is the reason of it. The owner does not speak a lot but he is full of hospitality. Most of their dishes are about $7.99 and the volume is more than enough. Only complain I have at Tanaka sushi is that it is hard to turn left onto Ogden st. to go home, and it is not their fault.
(5)Linda J.
I have been a customer of Chef Tanaka's for about 5 years, since he was located in the Asia Mart (which has now closed). We get take out from him on average 3-4 times a month. We've never been disappointed. The sushi is always fresh, nicely presented, and delicious! I love their miso soup, too. We haven't tried their Korean or Japanese fare, only the sushi. Highly recommended for a casual nice out or in...
(5)D S.
Not once have I been disappointed. We get sushi here all the time!
(5)Nim K.
I love that this place is on my way home from work! The sushi is very fresh and tasty. The staff is really nice too! Kind of small but works well for carry out!
(5)Megan C.
Not only are the people here genuinely sweet, their service and sushi is GREAT! I would recommend this place to anyone who loves sushi. It's a great, informal, casual place to get a quick bite or do take out. I'm personally a fan of their philadelphia rolls and the crunch maki. Their tempura is top notch, too. Definitely worth checking out!!
(5)C T.
It's my favorite place and I often come to eat lunch or dinner. It's inexpensive, fast to serve and delicious. I am very picky in terms of Asian food and this place always meets my expectations. It may not be the place for a fancy dating, but it is the place we can come and enjoy for everyday dining.
(5)Sarah L.
I organized an outing for a monthly meet-up group. I couldn't resist because I absolutely love both sushi and Korean food and this place has both. First, this is one of those places where you walk in, grab a can of coke, order at the counter, pay and grab a seat. I personally don't mind this at all! (But if you are looking to sit down for a while, and feel cozy then pick a different place). I loved the sushi (I had philadelphia rolls) and I also ordered the Bul Gul Gi (spelling?) because I've had that several times before. My friends got Tuna Rolls and Miso soup and loved their food too. Everything tasted great. I know some people have said otherwise but fear not..good food. Finally, I can find Korean Food without driving to the city! My only suggestion would be to turn the heat up a bit more on the cold nights. We were eating with our coats on and were still shivering a little. However, if you are looking for carry out, do NOT hesitate! Yum! Good for a smaller group. If you have a large group, I'd carry out and have people over at home.
(4)Jason S.
only man i know that makes soon tofu as spicy as i like it. sushi is always on point. i think it's byob too. didn't bring any liquor myself but the table next to us had a huge bottle of wine.
(5)Jenni E.
The jury is still out on this one, but for now....I'm going with "not bad". I went to this small place to try the sushi. This Korean place that also offers sushi was recommended to me as a great lunch spot because of their specials. I however, wasn't there for the special and just got a couple of rolls for a late afternoon snack. For starters, this is a mostly take-out place which doesn't really make me think of sushi. There are a few small tables and some barstools which are very uncomfortable for single diners to look like losers at. They have a small station where you can get extra wasabi, soy sauce and other condiments for your meal - but everything is very cluttered and unattractive in this place. They also only offer canned beverages in a small cooler. The one plus to the interior is that they have pictures of most of their dishes on the wall, which is nice if you don't know what to order. My nigri was very fresh and tasty - I would get that again. The rolls were only okay, but I have for sure had better other places. They also don't have a great selection of rolls. I did see that they there are a lot of reviews for their authentic Korean dishes. I would like to come back here and try some of those dishes because I do love authentic ethnic foods and I am thinking that I might enjoy these things more than the "just okay" sushi.

I accidentally found Tanaka Sushi when I wanted to eat Jimmy Johns. Needless to say, I skipped the sub place when I found this restaurant next door. I usually grab dinner here before my grad class. Every time I've gone, there's been a few people, which suprises me because I thought there would be a lot more. However, I eat a little earlier because of class, so that might explain it. Anyway, I've had their bento box twice choosing the different meats each time. I think its a good price for all the food you get (6 sushi, soup, seaweed salad, rice, and meat). Really delicious, authentic, and quick! The people who work there are also very nice and polite. I was happy to see the cashier was the person on their logo and business cards. =)

Stopped in for Sushi to go with my Jimmy John's #12, and was pleasantly surprised to find out they also serve Korean. I ordered the Bulgogi, extra spicy, to go. I don't know if it was because my order was to go, but I didn't get any Kimchee with my order. I hate the shredded cabbage with mayonnaise and ketchup dressing, but that is what I got. I will ask for Kimchee next time. Bulgogi was very good. Great mix of meat and onions. The seasoning could have been a bit more spicy, but they probably thought I couldn't handle the heat. I can. The Misso Soup was excellent, and I don't normally like Misso Soup. I will be back. Maybe I'll try their summer special, Neng Myoun, or maybe the Dduk Bokee.

While this was NOT the best sushi I have ever had, Tanaka Sushi is still pretty damn good. I have a love hate relationship with sushi: I love the taste, but I can only have a little because after a while the textures get to me. (I have the same problem with shrimp, lobster, and mushrooms. S'weird, whatever.) So knowing myself, I ordered a spicy California roll, and a spicy shrimp tempura roll to try initially. I figured I could switch textures back and forth and be fine with my food-weirdy-ness. I can tell you, I woofed those two rolls down in about four minutes flat. Super delish. It was way better than I was expecting and both rolls I ordered were sprinkled with panko crumbs for a little healthy crunch that I really enjoyed. Looking over their menu, they have a lot of interesting rolls to choose from and I can't wait to try some more! So far I've only ordered take-out, but I like how clean and uncluttered the interior is as well. It's a quick stop shop kind of place for a great work lunch, but maybe not so much for a sit-down-meal.

This place is amazing! I have been coming here since they moved from the Asian market in Naperville. The sushi is GREAT and the Korean soups are soooo yummy. Don't let the reasonable prices make you think its "cheap". Its quality fresh food at a great price. All their items are fresh fresh fresh.

This guy is the man and this is the place to eat. Hands down

A tiny restaurant that has fantastic foods. Foods are fresh and tasteful. It is mostly a TOGO or fast lunch place. Not many seats are available in the place. It is a bit hard to find the restaurant because the mall is hidden from the street. You should be careful to make a turn to enter into the mall. Despite all cons mentioned, I give five stars because their price is so reasonable considering all the points. If you care about value, this is the place to go.

Very disappointed! Even though Tanaka is carrying a very high rating of 4-1/2 stars, I should've read the reviews closer. Most of the reviews are for the Korean entrees and not the sushi. Our order last night was a beef teriaki plate and the Tanaka Box. The beef teriaki had a nice flavor, although there wasn't that much meat, and it was not the highest quality. It was ok. The Tanaka Box consists, or was supposed to consist of: 6 pieces sashimi, 3 pieces sushi, 6 pieces of maki, 2 pieces of the chefs selection of sushi, and miso soup. When I picked up my order from the counter, I asked where the 2 pieces of the chefs selection were. I was told that I got cucumber and seaweed salad instead. When I questioned this again the chef said " I can give you whatever I want!". In what world is a few pieces of cucumber salad equal to 2 pieces of sushi! The pictures on the wall and on the menus show the 2 extra pieces of sushi! As far as the sushi itself, it was sub-par. The pieces were all gristly and chewy. The rice also fell apart when the pieces were picked up. For the price of the Tanaka Box, $13.99, it is cheap, but anyone that thinks the sushi here is good should stick to AYCE's where quantity is the only thing that matters!

The best I'll get around downers grove area. It's pretty authentic. We had the Ahl tang and it was pretty good. I'll recommend this place to all my peeps in need of Korean food.

Don't let the cheap menu or lack of waiting staff let you down. This restaurant is amazingly delicious! I ordered some salmon and a crunchy roll. I know my sushi very well, and I inspected the fish before me and a friend ate. The chef is amazing, and theres no need to wait around for a waitress or to tip! amazing! I'm telling everyone about this restaurant
(5)Insun M.
Fair prices for fair portions and quality. I didn't really want to wait around for them to make my order so I just grabbed a couple of the already made rolls they had by the register. I think those are for people like me that just want to grab something and go. The pre-made rolls are priced slightly cheaper too. Tons better then grocery market sushi but this is not a top ingredient sushi joint.

I am a Korean-American born and raised in the Chicagoland area. For most of my life it seems, my family and I have been searching for a good Korean restaurant in the southwest suburbs. Unfortunately, the selections have always been pretty slim. Tonight, my dad suggested a restaurant he had heard about through the grape vine. The sushi chef was once a beloved sushi caterer from a local asian supermarket who decided to open a business of his own. This place was fantastic! It seems mainly catered towards take-out as the seating area is quite small and very informal (no wait-staff). But, there was definitely a wide selection of Korean dishes to choose from as well as the Japanese food staples seen in most any Korean owned Korean-Japanese restaurants. I got the Dolsot Bibimbap (stone bibimbap) with spicy squid and it did not disappoint. The squid was especially tasty as I could tell it was quite fresh. My family also shared a spicy tuna maki and salmon nigiri sushi. The sushi is fresh and delicious. My dad has always been a harsh critic when it comes to any type of Korean food or sushi. But, he was impressed enough by the food that it brought out a very rarely heard grumble of satisfaction. I would argue that this is better than Chicago's Korean restaurants. Chicago's K-town has been on its dying gasps for the past couple of decades with most of the go-to Korean places moving to the Northern suburbs. I am so glad that customers near 60532 can finally enjoy authentic and delicious Korean-Japanese foods closer to home. I am definitely coming back.

The man, the myth, the legend. Mr. Tanaka, I love this man.

Korean and Japanese Cuisine... Disclaimer: I am rating and discussing the Korean fare. While I'm sure the Japanese food and sushi are tempting as well, there are some options in Lisle and Naperville for those pursuits Now you can enjoy Korean food on Ogden Avenue in Lisle... You have approximately twenty choices for Korean, the lunch menu is quite reasonable, and the service is prompt. I enjoyed their yukgae jang and the spicy pork was adequate. No, this isn't Chicago... Now you can enjoy good Korean food quickly before proceeding back to work. Informal establishment with a lunch counter and some tables to the right.

I can always eat sushi, so when this place opened up down the street from my boyfriend's apartment I was excited!! He stopped in on his day off and grabbed a menu, and I couldn't believe how inexpensive the rolls were. Inexpensive sushi sometimes scares me, but I figured I'd give it a shot. We stopped in just after work for a little snack, and ordered a spicy tuna roll and a Philadelphia roll, and a side of spicy radishes (which i guess is radishes in a kimchi like sauce, I've never had either before). Our entire total was a little over $12. The spicy tuna roll was a bit spicier than other rolls I've had, but still very tasty, and the Philadelphia roll had a lot of cream cheese and was delicious! I am undecided about the spicy radishes, some bites were tasty, other bites were a bit too fishy tasting for me. I'll have to try it again. You can do dine in or carry out, it's a small establishment, with a few tables and a counter, but a very comfortable atmosphere. I will absolutely return and try other rolls and Korean food!!

Came here yesterday for an early dinner with the BF. It's small restaurant where you order at the counter, and they call your name when it's done, and you pick up around the corner at the other counter. It's a clean restaurant though, and I like the simplicity of it. Bibimbap: BF said it was good, portion I think could have been a bit bigger though, as it was a little smaller than the normal bibimbap portions we see at restaurants. Uh Woo Don: Spicy squid noodles, really good! I would get this again. They serve it with a bowl of rice, which was a little confusing to me, since it's a noodle dish. To be honest, I think they do that so they can serve you a smaller portion of the actual dish and fill you up the rest of the way with rice. For a noodle dish it was small, but it was filling for me with some of the rice so it's ok. Both come with a soup of the day, they had miso yesterday, BF normally doesn't really like miso, but he said it was the best miso he's ever had. It wasn't very traditional, but they had used a nice broth as the background to the soup I think, so it tasted very rich and "umami". They have sushi to go as well. We always liked them when they used to be inside Asia Supermarket (now closed), and so far it's still good.

Ate here last weekend as some friends were in town and I wanted to drag them out for some good Korean, and didn't want to head all the way into Chicago. Had the dol sut bibmibap, while friend 1 had the bibmibap and a veggie roll and friend 2 ordered the Ninja roll. Over all the food was pretty decent. Better than expected for the southwest suburbs (which confuses me as there is an H-Mart DOWN THE STREET, shouldn't there be more Korean restaurants nearby?) but definitely not perfect. My bowl didn't really stay hot through the meal and barely cooked my egg. Also, we had a problem where they combined two separate orders (ordered and paid separately) on the same plate. This was a problem as friend 1 is allergic to most fish and the Ninja roll definitely had fish on it. Admittedly, friend 1 didn't state her allergy, but as it was ordered separately, she possibly shouldn't have had to? Still, everything was straightened out. The staff was nice and the food was good. Tasty!

What a terrific little neighborhood restaurant! The artfully presented and fresh sushi here would cost easily double at most places. The prices are surprisingly affordable for what you get. They have good udon and ramen which is generally bland and tasteless at other places. They have an solid selection of Korean jigaes and the like. The staff is low key and friendly. It's BYOB. It's great!
(4)brett s.
An average sushi parlor. Nothing special and kind o pricey for the meal. I could of just gone to chief Soon. Better atmosphere, better wait staff.

For a simple Korean meal, or fairly-priced sushi, Tanaka is a great little spot. The dumplings (mandoo) have a flavorful filling and delicate skin that are clearly homemade, which explains the slightly high price of $4. One thing he's known for is his sashimi rice (hwe dup bap), which is a bargain at $8 or $9 (I can't remember for sure). When I've ordered the spicy yellowtail roll, he'll cut the fish fresh, and season it with the spicy mix, rather than using spicy sashimi paste, which is probably made from leftover fish scraps at other restaurants. It's not the fanciest place, and the fish isn't as fresh as West Coast, fresh-off-the-hook sashimi, but Tanaka is a solid little family-run place.
(5)A O.
Very good fresh sushi. Nice extensive menu. A total gem for pathetic Lisle!
(4)Fanny S.

(4)Jimmy K.
(4)G B.
(5)Kate P.
(3)J C.

(5)Michelle S.
Tempora udon is super good and a good portion size. I am traveling for work and found this place for dinner. Might have to come back before I leave. Definitely recommend.

Like others have said, this is a smaller place with only a few tables. But don't let the setup stop you from trying their food. I had the spicy tofu soup and my husband got the sushi box. Both were really good. The sushi pieces were huge too! I highly recommend this place!

It's my favorite place and I often come to eat lunch or dinner. It's inexpensive, fast to serve and delicious. I am very picky in terms of Asian food and this place always meets my expectations. It may not be the place for a fancy dating, but it is the place we can come and enjoy for everyday dining.

I've had almost all of the rolls here. My two favorites are the Miami Fred roll and the red dragon roll. Everything is so good!

+ Sushi? A+++++++ Delicious! + No muss, no fuss. This is a "cafeteria style" restaurant. You come in, you order right away, you pay, you sit down and wait for your food. Your food is called out, you pick it up from the counter, you eat. When you're done,

Good sushi option! Fair prices too

If you have a large group, I'd carry out and have people over at home.

only man i know that makes soon tofu as spicy as i like it. sushi is always on point. i think it's byob too. didn't bring any liquor myself but the table next to us had a huge bottle of wine.

(5)Laura F.

(5)John S.
This guy is the man and this is the place to eat. Hands down
(5)Yuntaek P.
(5)Michael L.

Very good fresh sushi. Nice extensive menu. A total gem for pathetic Lisle!
(4)Ed S.
(5)Lee G.
