Great Chicago style hot dogs and fries are something that every Chicagoan could easily criticize but this place is spot on and it is in the north Chicago suburbs! This place has been here for years and they must be doing something right to survive against Portillo's up the road. Besides the standard staple Chicago style hot dogs and fries, they range from Burgers to Italian Beef to Grilled Chicken Sandwiches. Max's Dawg House Fresh Cut Fries are fried to perfection compared to Five Guys Burgers' fries up the street that are just a limp greasy mess. This place tends to be a busy lunch spot serving the local corporate crowd and less busy during dinner. Great service, divey atmosphere walled with Chicago sports, and a TV running the Chicago baseball game during the day make this place great. Food - 5 Décor - 4 Service - 5

I work at the L.A. Tan right around the corner, unfortunately we cannot leave the store during our shift. They are are so nice to have someone bring over food to me and it's always more than satisfying. They have great italian beefs and amazing waffle fries. They are so friendly and have great food, what more can you ask!

I'm from Chicago.... Libertyville is surely out of my element so when I stumbled upon Max's I felt right at home. Fresh cut fries,Chicago style Vienna hot dogs with a pinch of celery salt that have that nice snap when you bit into them remind me of that place in the city. Max's is a good place to get a "taste" of Chicago!

Who doesn't love a good Chicago dog? It was spot on, vienna beef, mustard, the works, no ketchup, poppyseed bun. Exactly what you expect. Even the celery salt came through. No complaints about the dog. But the fries...BLECH! Maybe the fryer wasn't hot enough? Maybe my batch was sitting out too long? They were soaked in oil, and sat like a rock in my stomach for the rest of the day. I ate them anyway, much to my dismay. I'm sure I'll be back for a dog, but I'll definetely skip those fries, maybe I'll try some mushrooms instead?

Dogs, burgers, onion rings, and those oh so delicious cookies. They even make croutons and I eat a lot of croutons. For a great Chicago dog, family friendly atmosphere, and clean good food give Max's a try!

I love Max's. The dogs are classic Libertyville, that means they are really good and really overpriced! But seriously, the hot dogs here are really good and the fries are deadly. So salty and so delicious! They have a punch card as well. For every 10 hot dogs purchased you get a free one. You gotta love restaurants that reward their customers! C'mon Portillo's, get with the times!!

Good service very fast and efficient. As soon as I received my change they were handing me my hotdog with everything minus sport peppers . Was nice and clean not like some places where you put your arm down and it feels tacky and your stuck to the table. I have been here prior to becoming a yelp addict. A quick search for Italian beef in Libertyville area and this was one of the top spots posted and since my friend wanted to meet up for lunch before he had to work. I hadn't had an Italian beef since I moved away and I only had time for ONE sandwich so it had to be worth it. My verdict for the Dawg House: it fit the bill. The beef was tasty, the hot peppers just spicy enough, a little dry near the top but overall it was a good spot to come to for a beef. I knew I'd be hungry so I also ordered another local food: the tamale. I forgot how good these little extruded wonders were and it was a tasty addition to my meal. Service was good. I was expecting for our orders to be called but instead they brought us our food while we sat and caught up. A nice touch.

Right off the bat, the first thing you notice is the friendly guys sporting an old school diner attitude behind the counter. It's nice to get that feeling inside when outside is nothing but suburbs. They take your order promptly and bring the food out to you if you're eating in, which is cool. I got the Italian beef + Italian sausage combo with mozzarella and spicy peppers and that's pretty much all you need. It's a STUFFED sandwich, and I highly recommend it. It's about 8 inches long and more than enough food, so you don't necessarily need to get fries or any other sides (although I do recommend getting their seasoned waffle fries -- my friend got them and they're pretty awesome). Really quality meat and good balance with the cheese bringing everything together and the peppers adding in that needed kick. Thumbs up, for sure. If you're not feeling that, no problem! They've got great variety -- serving your Chicago classics from burgers to sandwiches to gyro wraps. Definitely better than Portillo's. Come for lunch, and you'll definitely leave satisfied. Best of all, it'll only run you $8!

when it comes to writing reviews, many yelpers write about experiences they had over the recent weekend. some perhaps are a bit more aggressive with their yelping and will write a review the day after they experienced something worth sharing. and then there are a few select individuals who will write a review that very same day. these consumate yelping crazies have more yelp accolades than any of us could fathom earning (or that we know how to earn). oh wait. there is one more category and that would be reserved for someone like me who wishes to write a review about a place that helped me get through senior year of high school some 15 years ago. and the very fact that i would take the time to conjure up memories that old to share on yelp must tell you that this place was by far one of the better restaurants of my youth (auto +1 star). max's. just the very thought of max's starts a mini-niagara falls in my mouth. the menu is your standard grease joint with burgers of all sizes, hot dogs made pretty much any way you want and just about anthing else involving meat and a flame. now my culinary knowledge didn't go beyond that of the difference between scrambled and hard boiled so those die-hards who want to know if they have a grill vs. a flat top - you're asking the wrong guy. you will be happy to know that i have since evolved into someone much more refined (not really but who cares). seriously though, i wasn't paying attention back then and i have moved far, far away so i don't know what they have behind the counter. but you're missing the point. the point is they served it all and they served it well. (+1 star for menu selection). so let's move onto a menu item that deserves special recognition: the cheese fries. these weren't your ordinary order of idaho spuds sprinkled with little slivers of cheese. oh no. this was the real deal holyfield of cheese fries. in my book, there are two types. 1) cheese fries you can eat with your fingers and 2) cheese fries that require a fork. if i'm not eating the second, i'm thinking and wishing and hoping for the second. max's served up cheese fries that quite simply couldn't be eaten without a fork. it just couldn't be done. you were basically ordering a canoe of cheese with a couple wedges thrown in for no reason other than obligation. i mean this dish was a dish all on its own. had i not had a hollow leg as a teenager, i probably would have ordered the cheese fries as a meal all by itself. they were that good and that filling. and the cheese fries are really the reason i wrote this entire review. see i was caught thinking about cheese fries and my mind wandered back to my days as a youth and those lunches at max's. so because this review was inspired by this one menu item, it gets a couple stars (+2 for amazing cheese fries). and that's where the review ends. like i said, i haven't been back in 15 years so the things i value now, who knows if max's has them. but, if i'm ever back in the land of thrillville, you know i'll be heading back to max's to see if it can earn one more star.

I love me a good hot dog, so when we discovered that there was another hot dog place outside of Portillo's in the area we had to give it a try. Personally I don't really care for Portillo's hot dogs anymore and Max's was able to fill that void. Max's is your typical hot dog place. It has a few tables, but don't expect to bring a party here. The owner is usually always there and an extremely nice guy, as is all of the staff. Even if you throw them a curveball by ordering something that's not on the menu they're more than happy to make it for you. I went in there not wanting a hot dog, but not wanting a full gyro so instead I had them make me up a grilled cheese with gyro meat, which they happily did. So if you're looking for a neighborhood hot dog place with friendly staff and great food I would highly suggesting heading over to Max's Dawg House instead of Portillo's, you'll be happy you did.

Great charred Dog!!! All I can say is that all dogs should be charred! The flavor of a boiled dog has no where near the flavor, def more robust taste of the meat and skin! I came in last week for the first time, I often look for unique,mom and pop joints vs chain lunch restaurants. The owner, a friendly Greek welcomed me to his restaurant and I thoroughly enjoyed my 2 charred dogs and fresh cut fries!! I will def be coming back again to try the other menu items~

Decent Chicago dogs, delicious fries, tasty Italian beef, but probably won't visit again with so many better choices out there. (Superdawg just opened in Wheeling, will probably try it out)
