Now, I'm usually not a big soft-serve ice cream gal. I always frown upon soft-serve as a much less flavorful imitation of the real deal ice cream, lacking in that creamy richness that makes hand-dipped ice cream so fantastic. BUT - I make a rare exception for a few soft-serve spots, Dairy Dream being one of these rarities. Most of my love for DD ties back to the fact that their soft-serve isn't just "chocolate or vanilla", instead they offer loads (like 30) of different ice cream flavors! Personally, I've experienced the cake batter, cappuccino, and maple nut varieties and all of those are quite scrumptious. The maple nut though is rrrreally my favorite - it is just soooo deliciously like maple syrup in soft-serve form :o I love that the mapley-ness is rather pronounced, seeing as typically, many of the funky-flavored soft-serves do not embody the potency of the flavor they are meant to represent. Rather, there exists a subtle undertone of flavor in each respective variety - blahh. Not with the maple nut! That right there is Aunt Jemima on a cone! :D

Nice, but, just ice cream. I will take my addiction to Greg's Frozen Custard in the future.

This place looks like a shack off the side of the road, but those are the places that are usually good! I came across Dairy Dream on Yelp and I have to admit it's no Gregg's but, sometimes you just want simple soft serve. This place actually reminds me of a place I visited in New York on my way to the Woodbury Common Premium Outlet Mall. I always get the vanilla soft serve covered in rainbow sprinkles. They have a variety of other soft serve as well that I will have to explore. I would definitely recommend this to anyone driving through Libertyville.

This place is ADORABLE! An all-American Classic. There used to be an amazingly similar place (only with blue instead of red) on the way up to Door County called the Frosty Tip. I'll have to see if it's still there. Great dreamsicle cone for just under $2. I'll be back, Dairy Dream!

We have been here 2-3 times over the 17yrs living in the area, most recently due to a livingsocial coupon deal. The prices seem to be a notch below DQ and similar places, but I think so is the ice cream. Their "big sell" are the varieties of soft serve, but my kids and I prefer the mixers(concrete, etc). Here the flavors and preparation are completely off. My daughter and I both had the same one: Mint Choc Chip and mine was green, hers only had some streaks of green(mint) flavoring. My son had about a fifth of his small mixer and sad he did not want it anymore; I think it was a cookies n' cream. They must be pleasing some customers, as there are so many old and new options in the area and they seem to hang around.

Love this place. Great ice cream and a ton of flavors. I always get my cone dipped in sprinkles and its soooo good! Only open in the summer but worth it to stop by.

Outstanding, adorable and super-friendly. We tasted 5 of their 28 flavors and each was amazing. Reese's sundae = to die for. Do yourself a favor and make the trip.

I haven't made a review in a long time and I used to be a yelp elite. But visiting my brother in Chicago (specifically mundelein,IL) we went here for ice cream. The service was great, everyone did a good job but this location gets ten stars (if I could) for Madeline. Girl, if you read this...Shoot for the stars. You are excellent. As far as the icecream goes...how can you really mess up icecream?

Best sundaes ever. Huge selection, including hot eats and specialties. Best staff ever. All tips go towards college funds. Better than Dairy Queen in both taste and service. And it's a small, local business.

Soft serve, check. Multi flavors, check. Fun atmosphere, check. The best waffle cones ever, check. This is my favorite soft serve spot. I have to keep myself from going more than once a week. I love the fact that they take care when mixing up each concoction and always serve you with a smile.

This place is fun for an ice cream outing. We have not tried the food but have been going for the ice cream since it opened. I do think that we will find somewhere else to go. The reason is that my family likes to sit outside and eat the ice cream. When we were last there, it was just so dirty by the benches, it was hard to enjoy the whole thing. The benches were filthy as well as the ground where, I am sure, lots of ice cream and food has been spilled. It needs to be hosed and cleaned everyday. There were hundreds of ants by our feet, flies swarming, and hornets. Clean up the outside and we will never stop visiting!

What's not to love about a place that carries 28 flavors of soft serve ice cream?! Coconut?! Dreamsicle?! Pistachio?! Yes! Yes! Yes! AND you can have those cones dipped in sprinkles or chocolate or nuts or chocolate. They also have burgers, fries and other assorted savory fare, but if I go to Dairy Dream it's because I want ice cream. This shop marked 55 years and has kept some of its vintage feel in the signage and the building looks like an old drive-in restaurant. These days you'll see cars pull up, bicyclers riding on the North Shore path, and walkers strolling up to the windows. The owners also hire local students for the season, and the tip jar is a reminder that the kids working the machines are actually working. They have always been polite, friendly, and quick. We've also had great success with their ice cream cakes when we are able to empty freezer space. You can custom order a cake, and sometimes they will have sown thing you can grab and go. Call ahead and they'll help you out. This year I've seen a few offers on Facebook so one are of improvement would be for more consistency in social media posts and presence. Otherwise, stop by for some soft serve.

Love. This. Place! Nifty old ice cream place! Feel like I stepped in a time machine. :) I had the Strawberry Milkshake and it was DELICIOUS! My coworker had the soft serve and she loved it too. Recommend this place to all!
(5)JR A.
Easily my favorite ice cream in the neighborhood. My daughter also seems to think so and prefers this over the other custard place by us.

This place was cute!! Came here late on a Saturday night after a big dinner. We couldn't fathom "real" dessert at the restaurant. Wanted something light, instead, so we decided to try this place. Oh what a nice surprise to see the vast options you have! I am a die-hard Cookies-N-Cream lover. It's basically what I get any time I get ice-cream. BUT, while I was here, I considered trying their normal soft-serve, so i tried a bit of Raspberry and OMG it was to die for!! But, i was lame and got my cookies-n-cream. And i have to tell you, two minutes into eating it, i was so disappointed i didn't get the Raspberry because it had just hit the spot!! So, rest assured, I will be back soon so I can get my Raspberry FIX. The kids working were nice, and efficient. Seemed to know what they were doing and worked fast. And we were amazed at the stream of cars that were coming in and out. This place seems to be a neighborhood favorite. Def worth stopping by!

Wasn't impressed at all. I think my mother-in-law thought she was taking us to Dairy QUEEN which isn't my favorite either but hadn't been in years so agreed to go. So we pulled in and the sign said Dairy DREAM? Ok so just totally wasn't impressed by the flavor of the regular vanilla soft serve. Not sure what all the hype is about but they don't even use real Oreos and that to me just isn't right. If you enjoy soft serve ice cream this is the place for you they have probably 25+ flavors.

a summertime must-stop in Libertyville. great shakes, soft-serve flavors (fantastic selection)

Ever been to your favorite spot a dozen times, and find an amazing treat?! My co-worker told me to get a Boston. I was like, 'a wha'?' Boston: Ice cream Sunday made in a Malt! with any toppings you want. My co-worker gets the banana shake as his base, then gets strawberry/vanilla ice cream plus caramel, pineapple, strawberry & chocolate topping. Its his Boston Banana Split! When i went yesterday, i saw the guy fill a big cup full of my choice of Cake Batter ice cream. Then topped it with peanuts and cherries. Then he filled around it with chocolate malt. I was in pregnant heaven.

This place is perfectly located right off the biking trail. Nice stop on the hot day! Some many choices for ice cream and shakes flavors!
(5)K B.
Great little neighborhood ice cream spot. Lots of options (including food) and quick service. Vintage drive-in feeling for those hot summer nights with a nice amount of outdoor seating. Also lots of bike parking and right off the North Shore Bike Path.
(4)Daniel B.
A really cute little ice cream shop that certainly appeals to the inner kid. Coming here on a hot summer night could be a real treat! They also have some seating underneath some nearby trees, so you can enjoy the shade in case you visit during midday. The area is kinda easy to miss though, and the place does have an old feel to it. Dont let this deter you from visiting though. Also I regret not getting ice cream in a Cubs baseball helmet. Still a kid at heart!
(4)Monica D.
Love this place! Great service, yummy selection (they also have savory bites, love their chili cheese fries), and location is perfect. My little one loves to run around on the bike trail and in the grass after he's enjoyed his treat.
(5)Jeff H.
I've only been to this location once before, as one of my kids has some allergies that prevent them from coming here, but on a lark we came back (without the allergic child!) and I ordered the Dreamsicle cone. How did I miss that the first time?! It's a swirled soft serve cone with ice cream and orange sherbet. Combine that awesome treat with the very cool old-timey vibe the place has, and this is a no lose place to come for a sweet, cold treat. They have other savory food here, but after my visits, I'm dreaming Dairy Dream on the next hot day!
(4)amy l.
My husband and I like to ride our bike on the north shore path to get our ice cream here! It's perfect :) I love the dream sickle in a cone or a cup. It's sooo good! I haven't tried any other flavors, but my husband loves the chocolate!
(4)Vicky K.
Very good and very reasonable. Great place for dessert after some Buffalo wings at Frank's For the Memories. Try their Boston float!
(5)Jake T.
I have to say I was surprised. I'm not really a fan of soft serve but I was not disappointed.
(4)Allison V.
Great Quality, cost, options, friendly staff....just to say a few great things about this place!
(5)Carl F.
Finally, a place where the soft serve ice-cream taste as it should and not contain ice-crystals or remanence of another flavor. The dessert menu is somewhat extensive and they seem to have a good selection which will please just about everyone who likes ice-cream. The service is quick and the servings are of good portion. They even cook up hot-dogs and burgers... something to try another day. We'll definitely be checking back into this place!
(5)Amy S.
Fantastic little dive shack that's been around for over 60 years! Classic soft serve with individual hand crafted samples. A crazy variety of flavors and various toppings. The owners and employees couldn't be nicer and they are very patient with you while you decide what you want to order. It's tucked away deep in the suburbs of Libertyville/Mundelein area... it's a local classic. Residents and locals know that Dairy Queen ain't got nothin' on this place and its history. Grab a hand dipped chocolate cone on a hot day and take a seat on the picnic tables around the corner with your family. You can even get food - burgers and chicken fingers, etc. I loved the Cake Batter sundae they made me. Hit the spot!
(5)Katherine F.
Don't judge the book by its cover. This place is the real deal, it doesn't need to update the appearance of the stand. Their soft serve speaks for itself. In the spring and summer months there is no other place in the area I would rather go for a cone, shake, or sundae. I have tried almost every flavor of soft serve and can not complain about a single one. Do yourself a favor and stop to try it for yourself, you will not be sorry.
(5)Brad E.
I really enjoy the variety of soft serve ice cream. I don't know of anywhere, where you can get soft serve pistacio, orange dream, or cheesecake flavors. They say that they have over 30 soft serve flavors? How do they do it? Do they have 30 soft serve machines, are are they magical!?
(4)Catherine S.
This great "hidden" soft serve spot fronts to a busy Park Ave. From the street, it looks like it'd be all asphalt and traffic. But behind the walk-up ice cream stand, there's a tiny little oasis of trees, old fashioned cement picnic tables and the McClory Trail - a very pleasant place to enjoy a cone or float on a summer evening. The menu boats something like 36 flavors of soft serve, mixed on the spot. My family tends to opt for the traditional "magic shell" coating or their signature "Crunch Coat" which is something like rainbow sprinkles plus Rice Krispies. The ice cream is very creamy and wonderful no matter what flavor you get. This last visit, the soft serve was a little too soft (and sloppy). One of our party actually had their cone top slide off into their hands. Fortunately, DD replaced at no cost. I'll chalk it up to it being early in the soft serve season. Won't keep us from coming back. It was a great place for a treat.

It is time to go. A group of us went here last night and it has probably been 5 years or more since the last visit. I ordered a cappuccino cone and I don't know if they roast there own beans but it took about ten minutes. When I finally got it I took a bite and it tasted like vanilla soft serve from a caffeteria. I would have said they made a mistake but it was brown ice cream... John got a chocolate sugar cone and they gave him a small vanilla dipped cake cone. Then to make up for the mistake they gave him another. Hooray for having twice as much of what you don't want and none of what you asked for. On a positive note the one year old with us loved his ice cream until he dropped it in the dirt. We never did figure out what the olive oil and spaghetti sauce on the fridge was for.

Great old time ice cream stand. A great spot for a quick cone, shake, or sundae, especially a dreamsicle cone!
(5)Caroyn M.
amazing. better than dairy queen, better than any where!
(5)Maddie S.
Great service, great location, great ice cream. How much better could it get?! Dairy Dream is one of my all time favorite ice cream stands. It never gets really crowed, so you can get your delicious soft serve ice cream cone in a snap! I'd recomend the flavor dreamsicle. That's what I get every time I go. Over all, Dairy Dream is the BEST!
(5)Alan R.
The same proprietors as the Dairy Bar in Glenview, Dairy Dream exceeds even Dairy Bar's standards. The soft serve ice cream is amazing. You can get it coated with a magic shell type coating or at DD, they have flavors that are mixed in with the soft serve. I had the Pina Colada and Amaretto flavors. WOW!!!!! So tasty! I will definitely have to make a trip up there before they close for the winter.
(5)Philip P.
Love coming here on a bike ride or taking a walk...this place is right off the bike trail which makes it an ideal pit stop. Haven't tried the hot food yet but all the ice cream is A-OK and always hits the spot.
