I'm pretty new to hanging out in the Highland Park/Highwood area, but Buffo's definitely makes me want to stick around! Had dinner there with the BF and his parents, everything on the table looked delicious. The spread included italian beef, pasta with meat sauce, and an Ollie's special pizza for me (full of veggies) The pizza was perfect. The crust is thin and crispy, and the cheese to veggie to sauce ratio was spot on. I also like that they offer individual pizzas (even though I still only ate half.) The atmosphere at Buffo's is casual, order and pay at the counter, they'll bring the food to you. Seems like it would be a great place to catch a game on TV, meet up with friends for drinks and dinner, or just have a casual meal. What impressed me most about Buffo's? The wall of condiments. Something for everyone. I like it!

It was good, but nothing really to write home about just yet. Had the BBQ Chicken Sandwich. Enjoy.

Favorite thin crust pizza around. Pizza, cheese fries, buffalo wings. Not sure I've ever wandered to anything else on the menu. Terrific root beer too!

I've been frequenting this establishment since I was a child. Great for families, has some little arcade games we always used to play. I love the owner, Lenny, and the establishment in general! As a true Chicago native and pizza lover, I can say with confidence, this is my favorite pizza place. Ever. Their pepperoni is out of this world. Thin crust is the way to go. If you're a local make sure to pick up a buffo's punch card to rack up discounts!

This place is surprisingly large. It has a great hometown feel. My Buffo's special pizza -- sausage, green peppers, mushrooms -- was delicious! The crust is surprisingly crunchy for being so thick. The sweet potato shoestring fries were the perfect app.

I've driven by this place dozens of times but never felt compelled to go in. So when the opportunity came up to try it out, I thought why the heck not? I was underwhelmed. Underwhelmed by the pizza, atmosphere and service. It felt like eating in a cafeteria. Just two rows of long tables. You order your pizza then wait for them to bring it to the table. But we had to ask for silverware. And napkins. And condiments. See a pattern? And the pizza was marginal. Completely acceptable but that was it. There are just too any pizza joints around to frequent this one. The one saving grace? The old school video games in the back.

I had great memories of this place but recently went for lunch and was very turned off by the frozen food that was heated in the kitchen. The pizza isn't good and the wings/onion rings were a huge disappointment. Maybe the most disturbing aspect was the curmudgeonly owner/manager that couldn't be bothered to take our order and later, openly berated an employee, in a manner that appeared he was putting on a show for his customers. I'd eat at one of the many competing restaurants in Highland Park, before giving this clown your business. Good luck, Buffo.

Can't come in town with out stopping! Such good food, staff all took notch! I also take some back !

A great gathering place for friends and family. It's not gourmet pizza, and you have to ask for plates, and more napkins (maybe more than once), but the truth is there is something that makes me come back here. Is it tradition? Is it the fact that it feels so small town? Is it the fact that they have Pacman in the back? Pizza is reasonably priced here. Not a ton of pepperoni on top, but the truth is there is something old school about it. I love that you can get a pitcher of pop, which reminds me of being a kid at a local pizza parlor at birthday time. Did you know they have car shows here? It's not on a regular basis, but if you're lucky you'll catch it. Again, leading to the fact that this place is about good old family fun time. Come for the gathering, don't worry about the everything else. Just have fun!

A staple for anyone visiting the Highwood area. The choices are all good from the burgers and fries to the famous thin crust pizzas! If you've passed through Highwood, then you can't miss the famous Joker on the roof. I've been coming here since I was a little kid. The servers are still the same. The owner Lenny is still the same. While, the interior has changed over the years, the ambiance is the same - great food, great people, and big crowds! They still have the classic Galaga game there too! Okay, pizzas? I'm a huge fan of a plain thin crust cheese and you can't beat it in the burbs. The BBQ Chicken is another must have for something a little different. Sandwiches? Oh heck yeah! The Italian Beef or combo is freaking outstanding too! When I don't opt for pizza, I will devour the cheeseburgers here!!! And, there's more!!!! Chicken, pastas, gluten frees, shrimp, salads, THE BEST CHEESE STICKS around, and then there is the beer... Go for the Chili Cheese Dog and you will leave extremely happy! Like I said, since I was a kid, this place will always be on my go-to lists. Weeknights bring in all of the sports teams that Buffos sponsors. A great laid back date night? Come devour some great pub foods and watch the multitude of games on their TVs.

Buffo's is always great! They have some of the best thin crust pizza around. There is not a single night that they are empty, the weekends are especially packed in there.

  • Ruby C.

Great pizzas, horrible salads... And their idea if 'balsamic vinaigrette' is laughable (and disgusting)... Tasted like generic Italian dressing with a splash of balsamic vinegar. Seriously, it's not hard or expensive to make great salads or dressings.

  • Tom B.

Best thin crust pizza in the north shore, a real tasty crust and plenty of tomato sauce on the top. The cheese is high grade and the toppings are fresh. My favorite of the specialty pizzas would be the cajun chicken. The italian beef sandwich is also another standout as well as the daily soup of the day with the turkey sausage gumbo soup being my favorite. A casual friendly atmosphere and hackerpschor weiss beer on tap.

I've been coming to Buffo's since I was a kid, and it's for more than nostalgia - it's because the food is delicious and fresh, and a great value! At Buffo's you can get a tasty italian beef sandwich piled high on a fresh roll with sweet or hot peppers, flavorful au jus, and whatever else you like. The pizza is also a go to. I love their pizza! And of course, let's not forget the giant glasses of beer. I hope this place stays around long enough to one day be a favorite of my own kids. Keep it up Buffo's! A Highwood classic.

I can only rate this fine establishment for its pizzas which are the bomb! It is quite a little secret outside of our little community that the double decker pizzas here are a one of kind. I have lived in Chicago/Burbs all of my life and yes, Pizzeria Uno, mmmmm, Giordano's mmmmm, but a double decker? TO DIE FOR! And let me tell you how much our taste buds are committed to the Double Decker... We recently moved to California. I came home last month to visit family and brought back three frozen, half baked, large double deckers to cook here in the brick oven. Yes, I paid the checked luggage fee. Would it have just been cheaper to order up some frozen Mulnati's? Absolutely! But, the taste would have paled beyond comparison. Pizza is nonexistent in California, at least as far as the Chicago style I love. So if you are in town and enjoy Pizza P-I-E, pick up a double decker, you won't find anyone else serving up this style and you will become a fan like me!

SO GOOD! So my boyfriend lives in Highwood and raves about Buffo's, and although i think he is great he definitely doesn't have the most discerning taste when it comes to food. So when we finally ordered a pizza for pickup together i was expecting just a pizza; definitelysomething tasty (i mean hello, its still pizza!) but definitely not anything special. But boy was i wrong! Buffo's was so tasty and perfect. It had the perfect amount of crust, not to mention the greatest thickness of crust. Their sauce was great and the spinach topping i got was some of the best i have ever had! I definitely recommend this spot!

Buffo's is "OK." Thin crust pizza is the star attraction here. Italian beef and fries are quite good. Lots of outdoor seating available.

A nice little casual place for thin-crust pizza on the North Shore. A friend who grew up in nearby Lake Forest swears by this stuff and I'm a believer. You order your pizza and drinks at the counter, then your food is delivered to your table once it's ready. Prices are very reasonable and they even had $2 16oz. drafts of Berghoff Oktoberfest when we were there this past weekend.

  • Toure B.

It was recommended for a great place for the family. I was not impressed. I'm sure it's good if that is the food you grew up to, but the food was bland, and I couldn't understand why the place was packed.

Delicious pizza! Leftover pizza saves well, hot dogs are tasty, and just tried their fettucini Alfredo the other day- yummy! I'm lucky this is close to our place! First place we ate at in our neighborhood and we frequently eat here-owners are super friendly too.

Buffo's is the best. It is in Highwood not in Highland Park. Big difference. I think we eat here at least once a week and we rarely order anything other than pizza. They make some of the best thin crust pizza around. Some compare the pizza to Bill's Pizza in Mundelein and there is apparently some story there but in my opinion Buffo's makes better pizza than Bill's. We get a basket of fries and a couple of ice cold beers while we wait for the pizza. The kids take turns pumping singles into the stuffed animal crane game. I can count the animals they have pulled out of that thing on one hand. The service and the food here are consistently outstanding and in my opinion that has a lot to do with the fact that you will rarely set foot in this restaurant when the owner/manager is not there. Friendly guy, not overly friendly, spends time talking to the regulars (highwood cops) and making sure things run smoothly and tables are cleaned up promptly. By the way, and this applies to any restaurant where you dont clear your own table, tipping is appreciated and I would argue warranted when someone else is cleaning up the mess you made. Leave a couple bucks for the effort you tightwad. Only possible knock is that they don't deliver but thats not a huge issue for me because I enjoy the Buffo's experience.

This is a great burger and pizza joint with lots of nostalgia for me. I went here when i was a little kid and the place looks nicer now but the food is still good. The burgers are huge, juicy and delicious. The fries come in a skillet (ordered separately) and are fresh and plentiful. However, the real star of the show is the thin crust pizza. The crust is crunchy (even for the next few days if you eat it cold!), the ingredients are fresh too. Oh they serve beer and have video games in one of two rooms for children even us big ones.

  • David L.

Best thin crust pizza around - go with the plain cheese or get 1 topping at the most so you can still enjoy the flavor. I don't know what Lenny does, but its a great recipe. If you live nearby, get it to go and by the time you get home, the pizza is still nice and warm, but not roof-of-the-mouth scalding hot as is the case when you dine in (I try to resist, but my fat-ass side always ends up torturing myself by not waiting for it to cool). The other option is to order ahead to go, and just eating it there -but they don't really encourage that.

this is not fancy food. this is food for the people. buffo's is my favorite pizza in the world. i make a hell of a pizza myself, and would take the pepsi challenge with most places pies but not buffos. for some reason it's untouchable to me. the crust sauce and cheese are in perfect harmony. this is not the place to get 12 ingredients on your pie. i love just sausage. it's perfect, consistent, and delicious.

Although I agree with the ratings and comments on the pizza in the past, I made my first visit in a while since going to college down the street. I ordered the steak grinder and a glass of water. I was charged to put normal toppings on the grinder extra and it was basically a burnt bocca burger. They never did give me my water and the sandwich was the worst tasting piece of food I have ever ordered. If you go there, do not order it.

First off i don't understand the low rating for Buffo's. This place is an institution the Pizza is great and you cant leave with out eating the cheddar fries. This place is very family friendly, just know its a split level restaurant, families with kids are usually on the lower level. This is the type of place parents bring their kids to on a Friday night and over the years those kids return as adults with their own children. Great pizza, great beer, and just a great place.

Whenever I call my friend who still lives in HP to let her know I'm in the 'hood, her immediate reply is "Let's go to Buffo's!' It is hands down her favorite place to eat. I love it too. When you walk in, there is a large menu on the wall to your left. You order at the counter, grab a number, get your drinks and try to find a place to sit. There are two rooms. I prefer the front room because the back room is kid central with video games and flat screen TVs. The front room has a flat screen as well, but it isn't as overrun by kids as the other room. I don't think I've ever had anything other than thin crust pizza and cheese fries. The pizza is good, normal, nothing fabulous. The fries are thick, the cheese is tasty and not runny at all. Every time I go to Buffo's I feel like I'm back in middle school/high school, except now I can have dinner and then meander to a bar down the street.

My wife loves this place and the cheddar fries. I find it a bit heavy, but one piece of the double decker is enough to fill you up. Usually do takeout when we go, but ambiance is fine for sitting down.

So my wife and I popped into this place a while back, never having been there before. All was good until I made the fatal mistake of adjusting the volume on the blaring TV. Wrong move. A restaurant employee who I took to be Boofo himself then proceeded to berate me. Suffice to say we won't be back.

Pizza here is really good , italian beef is brought out in a metal pan so all the juices stay with it , really cold draft in frozen glasses .

During this recent visit home last week, my sisters and our kids decided to grab lunch at Buffo's. The last time I was here I was ten years-old and bugging my parents for quarters. Let me tell you... NOTHING has changed. I spent $10 trying to catch my son a $0.50 stuffed animal in that dumb machine. Why do I always fall for those?! Their pizza is good, but the other menu options are great. A great choice if you're with a large group too.

  • john r.

First visit, was not sure what to expect. Definitely a family friendly place, and they do a good job. friendly service and staff, clean, noisy...but that is normal for this type of family establishment. Pizza had a decent crust, toppings could be a bit more flavorful. Calamari was good, spaghetti was average. Do not live very close, so doubt I'd drive out of my way to revisit.

  • Alyssa L.

Had high hopes based on the positive reviews. Ordered and sat outside, 45 minutes later when we realized customers that ordered after us were already eating we decided to ask. Found out that they packed our food to go and it had been sitting for who knows how long. So we received microwaved food which was not good without any apology or acknowledgement of the mistake. Will not return.

It's a Highwood tradition! I have been coming here since I could eat pizza and what can I say the pizza is great. It is a family friendly environment that has good food for everyone. There are plenty of tables and seats inside and on a nice day there is seating outside. The place is welcoming to sports fans with TV's viewable from just about any seat in the place. Most important, the pizza is really good. They use good cheese, good spices, and because it the pizza has a great flavor. I highly recommend taking the family out to Buffo's!

I've been eating Buffos for a long time. It's my favorite thin crust pizza. Crispy.. Tomato sauce is perfect. The fries are good--cheese sauce is good as well. Solid beer selection. I love their hot sauce selection. Great atmosphere. Just a comfortable restaurant. Very friendly and helpful staff.

Love this place!!!!!! Great food and great service! Very fair prices too! They always greet me with a smile and they know what I want! I get take out a lot too. They have only messed up my order once but they fixed it and it was fine (Everybody makes mistakes!). Very happy with this neighborhood spot!

While I would rate this place average, sometimes average is just the right thing. Buffo's is great for a late night meal or a large group on a budget. It was certainly the perfect place to stop and grab a bite when Pumpkin fest was wrapping up. While most think of Buffo's as a pizza place, I'm not a fan of the pizza. Being an east coaster this thin crust tastes like cardboard to me. I do really enjoy their burgers and fries! A half order of the fries is large and a whole one, ginormous. Lenny, the owner is super nice and does a terrific job hosting the Lions Club, twice a month on Thursdays! He offers a nice diverse menu and helps out a truly worthwhile club.

For 20+ years buffo's has never disappointed me. THE BEST PIZZA, BEST CHEESE FRIES (get them well done) great beef, great price, great service, great everything. I just wish they delivered. There newer double decker pizza is great as well. There is a big debate: whose pizza is better? Barnaby's or buffo's. Without a question buffo's is the best

  • Blake M.

Buffo's definitely deserves some love, maybe even some bonus points for nostalgia. Before you yell at me, "Hey, brah, you are not entitled to be giving out bonus points for nostalgia," you should realize 3 things. First, I'm not your brah. Second, you are yelling at your computer screen, and I cannot hear you. Third, I have mad credentials to talk about Buffo's. What credentials? I am glad you asked. I have been coming to Buffo's since I was 5 years old. There was a 12 year period where my dad and I went to Buffo's every Saturday, meaning I have been there at least 600 times in my life. I had high scores on NBA Jam PE, Cruis'n USA, Cruis'n World, Cruis'n Exotica, and Galaga. Let's just say Buffo's and I go way back (and I crushed their arcade games). When you go to Buffo's, it is best to follow my simple instructions. Your order should consist of at least two of these items: pizza (always thin crust, the deep dish kinda sucks), Italian beef (one of the best beefs I have had -- get it juicy with giardiniera), hot wings, and cheese fries. Correction: always, always get the cheese fries. Big, hot, and crunchy fries come with a tub or two of Kurdt's delicious molten cheddar. These are not your grandma's terrible cheese fries (she makes delicious pie, though) with that nasty, synthetic "cheese." If you are going to venture out, the burgers are flame-grilled and decent, the hot dogs are ok too, and mostly everything else on the menu is fried, so you can't go wrong with that. Seriously, though, avoid the deep dish pizza. If you want a true absurdly-too-many-visits-to-count inside tip, here it is: when you order the thin crust pizza, never get an ingredient on half the pizza. It takes the taste down a full notch because it is not cooked evenly. Get whatever toppings you want across the whole thing and bask in the deliciousness. The atmosphere here is what you would expect from a neighborhood pizza place. Friendly service, relaxed atmosphere, and a staff willing to put whatever game you want to watch on one of the tvs. Head over there, grab a beer or a Dr. Pepper, have some pizza and cheese fries, and enjoy a game. Don't forget to get an amazing chocolate chip cookie on your way out.

Waiting for the daughter to call to see if we're going to Buffo's for some food and football. Other times it's with the son. All good times. This place has stood the test of a long time relationship. But memories do not mean great food now. So what's the food story review? Excellent. Details: fries (excellent)/side of cheese (excellent, sometimes only good); pizza (always thin crust) (excellent); beef with gardiniera (excellent). We've had the wings and burgers before but not recently. Top notch. Games on t.v.--if you want to see a game and need a switch from what's on--just ask, they'll be more than happy to do it. Great, friendly crew from bus-person to owner. I need to find some bad places. My yelp rankings are getting too high, but this place is one that deserves the praise--Drat!

  • John M.

This is a classic place to get thin crust pizza. Basically you cannot get more fresh ingredients than at this place. Back in the day this place had a solid game room with the classic 80's game "Gatica". The owner of this place originally was part owner of another pizza shop, "IC Boys". Once while I was dining here this guy calls in a pickup order. About 15 minutes later, once the pizza was already made, the guy called back and cancelled the order. The owner of the place, picks up the pizza above his head and yells, "Pizza Pie!", then slam dunks the pizza on the floor in frustration. This was, and is, one high strung dude...but nice nonetheless.

A casual pizzeria...good for families or big groups. The place was decorated festively for Christmas when I went. You order the food at the front counter and can seat yourself anywhere. It's a pretty big space with two rooms. You can even watch the game on the flat screen TV's while you eat.

Buffo's makes a decent thin crust pizza with fresh ingredients....I will start there, and have to end there only to update later because this was the only thing I ordered. I had a small sausage and onion for take out on the way to my buddy's place last night. So what annoyed me a bit were the young group of 12-13 yr old boys in front of me in line when I got there. They took SOOOO long to order and were asking the clerk obnoxious questions about the kids menu and making him list off all the items, etc, etc. Buffos, do you guys have a take out counter or area that doesn't have to bottle neck the restaurant right next to the entrance?!?! It really bothers me when restaurants do not have a decently laid out system for being able to separate dine-in guests from take-out orders. There's a big difference between people who don't know what they want when they come to dine in and people who already figured that out and called ahead in an attempt to get in and get out!!!! UGH As a result, I waited longer than I needed to, because when it was finally my turn at the counter, I paid and the clerk immediately reached into the warm storage box and handed me my pizza. The ingredients were definitely fresh and tasty, but as others point out, you need to add some seasoning whether it be oregano, red pepper flakes or parm cheese. If a pizza is truly good enough, you don't really need these items. Also, I'd like to note that I thought the crust was crispy in the sense that it was hard, but it was just a tad bit too thick for my liking. I go more for the cracker crust that breaks off cleanly. This crust was definitely thicker and less crispy than what I am normally accustomed to. So, long story short, I wanted to like Buffo's more than I ended up liking after my first trip there. But, after experiencing Alex Washington Gardens last week, I've gotta say I'd choose their thin crust over Buffo's.

Reminds me of Barnaby's pizza in Northbrook. Same self serve set up. The crust is neither thin nor thick but a medium hearty crunchy crust. Great for kids.

Great place to hang out with friends. Good menu. Decent beer selection, not huge but good. The pizza is pretty good. We had the calamari which wasn't so good. Really nice staff. Kids like it.

I wish Yelp gave reviewers the option to give a business zero stars. My husband & I stopped in here tonight for the first time. We were the only customers in the ENTIRE restaurant and we had the nerve to ask the manager to switch off the Yankees game on one of the tvs so I could see the Bears game from my side of our booth. The manager and I say that in the loosest of terms, initially said no but a second later switched it over. As he was switching the channel he chastised us for choosing the booth we did and then told us he couldn't figure out why we sat where we did when we walked into his dump . I would hate to see his attitude when he has more than two customers to worry about. To the polite kids working behind the counter, keep setting a good example for your boss. It might rub off some day.

Buffos is great drunk food, and I mean that in a really positive way. It just totally reminds me of the lots-of-topping, thin-crust stuff we used to like to eat during late nights in college. Of course, now I eat this kind of pizza in broad daylight, and do so happily. It's not fancy, but it's plenty of fun. But stick to the pizza-- we went against our best judgment and also got a salad, and it was just... really sad. But still go there! the pizza is great! Just listen to your inner college kid and stick to the junk food angle. you won't be disappointed.

Dying for pizza. Read reviews about best thin crust on north shore. This has to be a prank. Right? The best comparison is with home run frozen . Apparently Chicagoan s just cant judge thin crust. A far superior choice is Moccios. Far, far better and same price delivered. So disappointed. Never again.

This place is good for excellent thin crust pizza. I have been here a handful of times mainly for pizza. It's one of my favorite thin crust pizza joints. It tastes delicious. I like their Zesty Italian and Cajun Chicken specialty pizzas a lot. To me it's one of the best pizzas in the northern 'burbs and greater Chicagoland area. It's done just right. It may not seem anything special but it's quite flavorful. But otherwise pretty good. I like their chilli, the hot sauce collection they have and beer selection. My dislike is their prices and small slices. They are a bit pricey for the size of pizza they offer. But otherwise it's pretty good. Go check it out if you like thin crust pizza.

    (4)

The only thin crust better than Buffo's is Barnaby's in Northbrook. Although, I may like Buffo's pizza sauce better than Barnaby's. Sweetest and tastiest sauce I've ever had. Burgers and cheesesticks are amazing too!

Italian Cuisine

The immense popularity of Italian cuisine globally isn't unknown. You can find an Italian Pizzeria around every corner of almost every city in the United States. Not to forget that in every house, people enjoy mac and cheese as comfort food. But it would be wrong to believe that Italian food starts with pizza and ends with good pasta as this Mediterranean country has much more to offer other than these two dishes. In Italian Cuisine, there is a high use of fresh tomatoes, all kinds of herbs, great quality of cheese, all types of meat, seafood and fresh handmade pasta. Many find it hard to believe that Italians have been making noodles long back.

Italian and Greek cuisines are always mistaken to be same, but they are poles apart. The primary difference between the two cuisines is the use of cheese in most of the Italian dishes. Italians love to cultivate their own cheese and process them as per their food requirement. It is believed that some cheese is so expensive that cheese producers secure them in lockers.

If you are bored eating the same old pasta or pizza, you can try some of the authentic Italian dishes like Risotto, Polenta, Ribollita, Lasagna, Fiorentina Steak, Bottarga, Ossobuco, Carbonara, Focaccia, Arancini and Supplì. Another item which Italians love to relish every morning is a good cup of Italian Coffee. Once you taste a freshly brewed cup of Italian Coffee, you might not visit Starbucks ever again. Authentic Italian food is made with heart and soul, so go find a restaurant where you can relish Italian cuisine in your city.
