Pretty standard lunch buffet. When I went, they had some interesting hard boiled egg curry, kickass cauliflower curry and other standard fare - goat curry, papadum, chicken tikka, chana masala, etc. If anyone is concerned - none of the dishes were spicy, and some were actually on the sweet side (to me at least...). The cauliflower and chana masala definitely hit the spot for me. They also had carrot pudding? and kheer for dessert. The kheer really watery, but flavor wise, yummy. Service was OK - they cleared our dishes and refilled water pretty fast. Definitely worth a try for a cheap lunch if you're in the area.

This is probably the worst place I have ever been too. The 2 guys over there are very rude. They charge you service tax for a buffet. Like who does that for a buffet? The food is very ordinary. I would recommend you to make indian food at home rather than going to this place.

Very good Indian food in the far North suburbs. Staff is friendly and food comes out reasonably fast. The only thing that bugs me is I'd like a little more meat in my entree for the price.

I have now been here two times for the lunch buffet and I have been underwhelmed. The lunch buffet at $15 is comparable to like restaurants in the area but the section is lacking. It is a true feat that they can have plenty of people eating but yet the food in the buffet still tastes old. Much of the appetizers taste like swad and microwave cooked without love. The naan was plentiful and the staff was very good.

I ate there for lunch and enjoyed the buffet. After eating authentic Indian food often in Hawaii, it was so nostalgic to eat excellent authentic Indian food at the Himalayan Restaurant. I will definitely visit again when I'm craving, and will bring my partner too! :D

My husband and I were pleasantly surprised by how tasty the food was. We live in Waukegan and there just aren't many dining options so we finally gave this place a shot. They bring papadum with tamarind and mint chutney to your table. The samosas were big and the filling had good flavor. The dough was flaky and tender. The chicken momo was very good as well. We had the saag paneer and lamb tikka. Both were delicious. The lamb chunks were very meaty. I've seen some reviews complaining about having to pay "extra" for rice and nan. They charge you $3.00 for both if you order an entree. That's $1.50 apiece. I have NEVER eaten in an Indian restaurant where you DON'T pay for rice and nan. And a buck fifty each? That's cheap. This isn't a corporate chain where you get soup, salad and a drink with your hamburger. It's a sit-down restaurant. Also, the nan was super yummy. Service was fine. It was prompt, courteous and kept my water-guzzling husband's glass filled. They also have beer and wine. We'll definitely be back.

I've had both takeout, which ended up being a veritable buffet at an Indian friend's parents' house, and the lunch buffet. The buffet is currently $10.95 and includes a soft drink. The service was unobtrusive but efficient and friendly, and unlike a lot of buffets they'll bring you baskets of fresh, hot naan. The buffet has a decent variety of both meat and veggie options as well as a few desserts, which is helpful when dining with Mr. Vegetarian. I know I found enough to eat and my belly was as hard and tight as a watermelon after. Probably a bad sign. The other reviews regarding the spiciness of the food is true, and the takeout food definitely has more kick, but they do have hot sauce on the buffet and a quick spoonful of it mixed into my lunch solved that problem. I'd been to this place when it was called Bombay City and heard some gossip about why it closed from the aforementioned friend's mom, but I'm going to stop being a busybody for once, and keep it to myself. Note to people in a 5 mile radius: They deliver.

I have to update this review. I've eaten here again, and I'm really annoyed about something. I spent $40 on food; they charge $2 for an order of naan, and they only give you one piece. One piece! This bothered me last time, as well. I assumed they shorted me before bc it was delivery, but this time it was carryout and I figured they would be too ashamed to do that to my face, but no. The food is overpriced even though it's very good, and they straight up short you for the amount you get. I got the lamb tikka masala this time (far more moist than the chicken btw) and, just like the chicken tikka masala, it was all sauce and hardly any meat. Delicious, but they are really over charging AND shorting on the quantity of food. Sorry, but I'm knocking off a star and a half and finding another Indian place to patronize. That's just ridiculous. *huff* I am new to Indian food and ordered delivery from Himalayan the other day. It was awesome!! Everything was wrapped in saran wrap so none of the containers leaked, and my food was fresh and delicious. My favorite things were: the vegetable samosa, an appetizer that comes in twos. It's a crispy pastry stuffed with spiced potatoes and green peas deep fried. The chicken tikka masala, sauteed in a delicious creamy onion tomato sauce (which I recommend having over rice). Spicy naan, essentially fresh baked bread in the size and shape of a tortilla with LOTS of jalapenos baked into it. Also good for dipping into the tikka masala. YUM! I would definitely have a very cold, sweet drink with this meal.

This place serves up some delicious food with a nice atmosphere, great waiters and the prices aren't bad at all. I was part of a large group so I sampled some different things and everything was delicious. Definitely get a side of rice and garlic naan (goes great with chicken items especially). They also serve an Indian beer that is kind of hard to find - Haywards 5000 - if you are a beer person, I would definitely recommend giving it a try. Haven't had the buffet here yet, but looking at the other reviews, i'll definitely make a visit during lunch sometime so I can try that out as well! Nothing like a great buffet.

I was sitting around on a Sunday night hungry but not knowing what to eat. I finally decided to call this place and order carry out. I spoke to Nirajan, told him all my info and that I wanted something with chicken, rice and sauce, he recommended the Chicken Tikka Masala with rice and naan. WONDERFUL! I will definitely order from here again. I also appreciate the customer service. Top notch must try!

So you have to ask for triple spice to get it right. But oh yes. Once you do, they can certainly deliver.

One of the biggest drawing points for this increasingly popular Indian and Nepali restaurant is that it's the only one around. So even if the food was mediocre, it would have few if no competitors. I'm happy to report the food is quite good here. I've been a half dozen times and while more often than not I've enjoyed the value and variety of the lunch buffet, ordering food made to order off the menu offers far superior quality, as well as direction to have the spice levels adjusted to your taste. Before Himalayan, I'd never tried Nepalese food. There are just a few choices on the menu, but a standout would be the Momos, steamed dumplings with meat and or vegetables and a special sauce. The great value of a weekday lunch buffet for less than $11 is another huge draw here. It was almost full the last few visits. There are usually nice pakoras, a sambar soup (today served with a delicious spicy Nepalese fried lentil ball) and a simple make your own salad as starter options. Today there were no less than 6 side sauces to try with the food. If you are vegetarian, you will be very pleased, because the options are numerous, from Chana masala with chick peas to creamy eggplant cooked in a clay oven. The paneers are good, and while I prefer peas, the spinach had a nice flavor as well. Typically there will be 3-4 meat entrees. The rich chicken Mehta in a creamy fire engine red sauce is good as well as a surprisingly moist tandoori chicken. My favorite standard meat entree is a goat curry. It's tender and lightly spiced. For desserts they often have mango ice cream, but today there were four choices including the standard fried donut holes in a rose water sugar syrup and my favorite warm carrot pudding. My main concern about the food is that it's really on the bland side. Maybe they do this to match local tastes, although there were quite a few Indian people eating in the place. I know traditional Indian food is quite a bit more spicy, so one or two spicy entrees on the buffet couldn't hurt. Service is usually good, but lately I've noticed the dining room is understaffed which translates into having to wait a bit for things. While until now I've never had a serious gripe about the service other than it was slow, I felt like a ghost in the restaurant today. I was addressed exactly twice: please sit here and thank you upon taking my check. Maybe she was having a bad day, but she never asked me anything else or even looked me in the eye. That's too bad. I'd recommend this place to anyone who hasn't tried Indian or Nepali food. If you go for the buffet, it's completely unintimidating.

Food: A+ ... when you're in the restaurant. I used to live & still work in downtown Chicago, so I'm used to getting Indian food delivered. Truthfully, it's my go-to when I'm working late or otherwise too busy. These guys, Himalayan ... great food, reasonable prices (not sure what benchmark everyone else is used to), but their delivery is absurd. First, no Tuesdays. At all. Sometimes other days are a no-go too. Second, they only deliver when they're not busy. You can call, & ask, & they'll tell you they can if you really, Really, REALLY can't come pick it up, but they'd rather you do carry-out. Lastly, they don't seem to know how to package food to go. Or (worse) they don't care about their delivery customers ... something, anyway. Freshly cooked food that needs to travel well can't just be slid out of a pan into a container. They seem to get it wrong every time. I would love to make this a five star rating, but I just can't until they start to take all of their customers seriously.

Really excellent Indian / Nepalese food in Gurnee of all places. They have an awesome lunch buffet during the day for $9.95 per person and an ala carte menu at night. We tried both during our stay in Lake County. Food was definitely 5 star but the service was 3 during dinner service. We waited more than 45 minutes after ordering for our food to start arriving. It was worth the wait though. I can't recall everything we had but standouts were the Lamb Vindaloo and I really loved the Carrot Pudding. Try this place if you want to escape the onslaught of chain restaraunts surrounding Great America.

I have been here a few times now, always for the buffet. I'm too afraid to order a meal that I'm not sure of, so I always get the buffet so I can kinda pick and choose. The food is always great and I liked it a lot! The inside decor was a little...off? And the bathrooms were awkward. Didn't really detract from the dining experience though.

  • Wakefield T.

This is the best indian food I've had in the states. I travel throughout Asia and the chicken vindaloo is amazing here. I ordered it spicy. I should've gotten it extra spicy. I recommend.

Maybe my second favorite Himalayan place, it is really hard to beat some of the places down in Blooming IN where there is a large displaced community. In any case, they have a solid menu with lots of special, the staff is always attentive and they do a great delivery business.. It is the best northern Indian food in the far north burbs..

Went there for diinner and had 2 vegetarian dishes I haven't tried before - both very good - 1 had balls of something in a tomato colored sauce, the other a dish of sauce with lentil beans. Also had Tadoori chicken - good, but I'd had better The regular ad garlic naan were much better than average. Overall a very good experience

Visiting from DC, we had high hopes about this place. Unfortunately, the restaurant did not live up to those hopes. We got the vegetarian Thali. The food was OK at best. The flavor was there but it was heavy. Indian food doesn't have to be heavy. We're used to southern Indian, which is a lot different. We got takeout and it would have been nice for them to pack some plates. In other words, YMMV.

Underwhelming dinner there yesterday. They were unable to provide us with any dairy free rice - apparently all of their rice is made with butter. That was a first. Food was so-so. Order had spice levels mixed up. Finally, they presented us with complimentary desserts, which was nice, but no one wanted them. Awkward. Overall, good service. Friendly, well meaning staff. I wouldn't go back though. Unheard of not to have dairy free rice.

Picked up food here (we live about a mile away) and it was superb. We got the Dinner Combo/Deal #1 with a lamb curry, some sort of paneer masala, and a kabob cooked chicken with sausage (forgive me I don't know what it's called but it tastes good). The food was excellent! I didn't have a favorite among the three dishes as it was all delicious. If you are local and have a craving for some very good Indian food, then you should be all over this place. If you've never tried Indian food, then just go for the dinner for two deal. You won't have to worry about what to order. Just eat what they give you and you will be happy. Will I order from here as often as I can? YEP!

Don't write a hateful review of a place you have only been to once for the crumby lunch buffet. This place is good. We usually go with takeout because it's usually too busy to have a relaxing meal inside. The Naan here is perfect. The raita is nice. The vindaloo is nice and so is the biryani. Dinner here is much better than the buffet. My only complaint about this place is that my family can't have dinner here for less than $50, so we don't eat here nearly as often as we would like to.

The food here is very tasty! Vegetarian & Vegan friendly. Loved the appetizers and the various types of naan! Definitely requires a series of return visits.

I'll keep it short and sweet, atmosphere, very NICE (one of workers even turned on fireplace for us). I had the lamb kabob and my fiance had the PANEER TIKKA MASALA, and I wish I would have gotten that. DAMN that dish was DELICIOUS!!!!! I mean my dish was good but I wish I would have gotten the PANEER TIKKA MASALA! Waiter was helpful and courteous, the naan bread was fresh and delicious, even the chips with dip were good (not sure of the name of the chips and dips). Will definitely be returning for that PANEER TIKKA MASALA. Definitely worth the visit.

Always a fan of Indian food. Unless I get Groupons, Living Social, Google Offer deals, etc., I only do lunch buffets because one or 2 la carte dishes ends up being more than the buffet. I went on a Sat. and this place lived up to my expectations of what I expected of such a restaurant. The usual Indian fare is here (I forgot most of the original names)... -salad bar portion (lettuce, yogurt dressing, etc.) -fried lentil balls -some kind of lentil fries -green beans in coconut sauce + powder -spinach + cottage cheese -tandoori chicken (bone-in) -chicken curry -chicken in cream sauce (orange thing) -bone-in goat meat (at the Indian restaurants I've been to, you don't get this for just $10.95) -chick peas -vegetable medley (peas, carrots, and other vegetables) -cauliflower + potatoes (a bit hot and spicy, but I wasn't overwhelmingly so, and I'm a person who has low tolerance of hot 'n spicy) This place was unusual in where it had 4 different desserts! (ftr, I don't count fruit as dessert) -Sweet, sticky balls in sauce -Rice pudding -carrot pudding -some kind of mango ice cream cube held together in some crispy exterior cube. I was given a bread bowl of naan. The waiter was very good about keeping my water filled. All in all, a great experience, and a great value for the price too! Oh, and the restaurant was clean and roomy too. A TV with CNN was showing at the time.

Everything at the buffet was tasty, lots of flavor in every dish. And great price for a buffet that size.

Been to Himalayan a couple times for the 10.00 lunch buffet, everything is so fresh and not sitting around. They have a very good selection and several desert choices. Service is solid with freshly made Naan brought to your table, and water filled before the glass is half empty. I only wish the food was a bit more spicy, its all great don't get me wrong, but I love it when the heat is dialed up! that's the only reason they don't get 5 from me. I suggest you don't go for a fast lunch because you'll want to take your time and savor all the wonderful dishes they offer. One last thing WEAR STRETCHY PANTS!

  • Jenn H.

Tonight was our first time here, and we loved it! All of the food we ordered was amazing and the service was too! They are so nice! We had someone in our party allergic to tomatoes who ordered a dish with tomatoes and didn't realize it. Not only did they make him something else, they didn't charge us for the one he ordered by mistake! Then they even offered us dessert on the house! The interior is also really clean and comfortable. Great for families and big parties. We can't wait to come back and try the buffet!

A bit too mild for my taste, but the food was really delicious. I brought a group of 6 for lunch and we were accommodated very nicely. There was enough selection to fit everyone's preference.

We went here recently on a trip to our son's Naval basic training graduation. I am always looking for different ethnic restaurants to try out. We spotted this place the first day we were there and decided that we wanted to go here while we were there. It was pretty good. The service was lacking though. They didn't have enough waiters. There was only 1 and this was during a semi busy dinner service. I would give it an overall score of a C+.

This place has some of the best Indian food around. I would claim it to be the best in Lake County. The lunch buffet is absolutely amazing! I hope this place stays in business for a long time!

  • Megan M.

Pretty good food, excellent service, and very clean. I only give it three stars because I like spicier Indian food. I had a good lunch, and if I am nearby and hankering for Indian food, I will go again. But, I wouldn't make a special trip. Now, if you are new to Indian food, and are nervous about it being too spicy, I can heartily recommend the Himalayan.

I went last night with a vegetarian friend and we had a great experience. We split the Vegetarian Thali special ($26.95) and were overloaded with some delicious, reasonably healthy food. It included tandoori vegetables, paneer tikka, and dal (lentils), along with naan, rice, and rice pudding for dessert. Needless to say, we had plenty of leftovers. The service was attentive without being intrusive, and they left us alone as we had a long chat after dinner. It is my friend's new favorite restaurant. I have never had Himalayan food before, but to me it seemed very much like Indian food. I thought it was as good as my favorite places on Devon street in Chicago. I don't get to Gurnee often, but would definitely return. The prices were very reasonable and the food was terrific. The night we were there it was pretty quiet, so I hope it picks up for them and they stay around.

  • Katrina B.

this is the best indian food in a ten mile radius. the ambience is quite nice, tables are cleanly set and the decor has been recently updated. $9.99 will get you a delicious lunch buffet, except completely heatless. this is indian food that's been completely toned down for the suburban palate. i should be crying from the spices, but instead i'm overeating from the delicious but bland abundance. this would be a nice place to take an adventerous client/customer for lunch.

Nepal lies at the crossroads of a lot of cultures; this is certainly reflected in the dishes offered here. Himalayan takes the spice of India and combines it with other regional dishes. This place offers momo ("moe-moe"), a Tibetan variation on potstickers or goyza; a meat-filled steamed dumpling. On the lunch buffet, there was one of my favorite dishes, Farsi Bhaji. Green beans cooked with coconut milk and cream. I love this stuff. The coconut milk is a dead giveaway that its a south Indian dish. Saag paneer, that Indian solution to what to do with spinach -- never better. The samosa and thin, crispy spring rolls had an Indian flair. I like naan... we also had roti -- the less airy, stretchy whole-wheat breads that are more the home-style everyday bread. Heck, we make 'em at home! The chai here is different -- Nepalese style. Spiced and black, without the dairy and sugar that Indian masala chai does. It's a really pleasant change and really brings out the spice in the food. Service was good, and I will certainly be back.

Food and service during afternoon buffet was excellent. The food was quite good and the items were well stocked. The number of items was definitetly a plus as I have been to similar buffets that only carry 6-8 entree type items, this buffet easily had 12+ entree type items available.

There was an Indian restaurant that used to be in this location that I really liked. I was sad when it closed but then, Himalayan took its place: Hazzah! Great lunch buffet with some wonderful Indian classics. I was happy to see my favorite green bean and coconut dish on the buffet the afternoon I was there--it'd been so long since I had it. The chicken was succulent. The samosas, a dream. The spring rolls were flavored with Indian spices. The saag paneer was so wonderfully comforting. They gave us roti when I asked for it instead of naan--no problem! (I love when a restaurant makes such requests effortless!) Now, here's the cool thing. They have specialties known in Tibetan cooking! I was really cool to see things like momos on the menu and I can't wait to go back and try them. We ordered masala chai but they gave us Himalayan chai which I'd never had. There's no milk in it and the spices are a little more complex than its Indian cousin and it was wonderful. It's easy to make a black tea drink like that bitter but the spices were PERFECTLY balanced. The waiter kept filling our cups too--that is the sort of service I can't get enough of. I love this place, its delicious food and wonderful service. Give them a try. The Indian buffet is only 8.95 which is fantastic considering most places now have raised their buffets to 11.95 or higher. Great value. Great service. Great experience!!!!! OM....

Alright so this is my first time ever trying Indian food. Kind of embarrassing that I made it to 23 being so close-minded but oh well it happened. I went to the lunch buffet. I'm not entirely sure what it consisted of, but it was good. There was some fried rice.. a soup of some kind, fried lentils? chicken tika masala? Goodness this is like the most uninformed Yelp review ever. I guess the point is that I'm a noob and I'd never tried Indian food before and I dont like spicy food and I LIKED this place. So to all the noobs out there, don't be afraid to try it! It's yummy.

This place has such wonderful food. I can't understand why there is not a line out the door to get in? They have a great special on the first page of the menu $14.95 for a pick two deal that includes nann and rice! The service is lovely and fast.

Wonderful lunchtime buffet, and great place for a sitdown lunch or dinner. Take out works as well, and you can have a beer while you wait. Entrees are great, nice flavor. Not too spicey for kids. Pricey, but well worth it. Nice selection of Indian beers!

Enjoyed the lunch buffet ($8.95). WE were the first in for the day, but many others soon followed. A few of the items included: green salad, tandoori chicken, basmati rice, creamed spinach, khasi ko masu, chana masala...few other items Feel the buffet could add a few more items to select from, another desert selection would have been nice. The food was very good, but the service needs a bit of work - we had do ask for soda refill, and another serving of naan. But, would try again.

I love the decor and the staff is very friendly, but I have made better Indian food at home. That being said, I am a great cook. :) For the price, the lunch buffet was very good. I will return whenever I don't feel like cooking myself.

I was here for lunch buffet.. The place has nice ambience compared to other indian restaurants .. For 9.95 it was not bad.. Personally It could be priced a little lower on a weekday for lunch.. They had a big list of Indian beers and wine collection.. The owner looked like a Nepali and oddly a wine connessiuer .. Coz everytime he gets a break.. I used to see him on d bartender side ... The staff were friendly n apt.. This place has no competition for Indian food in the next 20 mile radius.. So you have no real choice.. If u around the area n craving for Indian food n beer.. This is d place to be!

Great food, both here in gurnee and one of the other locations in Niles. Went for dinner with extended family and had agreat time. Service not rushed and an extensive menu, both vegetarian and meat. The Lamb Boti Kabob was fork tender, crusty on the exterior and spiced perfectly. Three word: dee lish us!

I was very displeased with this place since they've come under new managment/ownership. The food was probably the worst Indian food I've had. It wasn't disgusting, just incredibly bland and boring without much variety. The steep price was what did it for me. Ten dollars for a lunch buffet that was incredibly sub-par. It was rather greasy too. They were friendly though, I'll give them that.

Portions are large & tasty. The mango lassi is sooo good. I've had the Nepalese items several times and always liked them. I've taken a few other people there & everyone else has always liked their meal, too. They wrap takeout really well, too, so there's no spilling in the car.

Ok check this out. Food here is top notch BUT!!! 2:15 I go there to have buffet they close at 3pm. 8 tubs of food 3 are empty 2 are almost empty out of the 8 tubs. $9 a person to eat. We are scraping the last of the good stuff out of the bottom of the pan to get anything out of them. I asked twice during our meal to put something out to eat. The second time the waiter says I will bring some of the same food that should of been in the tubs the exact same food out to our table since it was near closing. The tubs should of had food in them if you are going to take $ from customers. If the buffet is half full should I pay half price? Yeah ok sure. So my daughter was home sick. I decided to buy the to go buffet for her. Take some food home to my kid since they finally brought some to the table. This is so petty. I had just a little left on the table. I figured since I paid $9 for the take home food and the tubs were empty I would put the left overs in the to go container that I just paid for. (Oh, and these idiots would not let me fill the container they portioned it out and filled it for me as I pointed out what I wanted) So, as I was starting to put the buffet food on my table into the container to go the waiter starts an argument telling me I can not remove any food from the restaurant that was on the table. I said " the food I just paid for that should of been on the buffet to begin with? I mean table scraps. Not much to take home anyway cause we ate half of it. Remember the same food that should of been and was being served on the buffet. I got pissed. I paid for the to go buffet and got some small minded rude waiter arguing with me. My total tab was $50! And I can't fill my Styrofoam container for my kid????? That I just paid $9 for? Now you are going to be a dick head and argue with me over scraps? BYE BYE TIP Yep scratched it rite off the receipt for my charge card and corrected the total lower. Anyway this whole scene is restaurant suicide. I had heard from three people the staff there were rude, but up till now I had no problems eating there weekly. Now they lost me forever as a customer and two of my friends an d my family. Over scraps. You take a chance eating here. Like next time, I will just to to Gaylord or somewhere else in Schaumburg or Peacock in Vernon Hills or Aroma in Vernon Hills. Oh, let me see there are many other choices in the area. Food here is top rate but they are the most petty staff I have ever had to deal with. Rude, and dumb as a box of rocks. I won' t be back. They ruined my lunch.

I was there on Christmas Eve day, which may account for the restaurant being pretty lightly attended. I got a tandoori chicken dish (I can't remember which!) which was great, along with a beer. My family lives up in Gurnee, so if I could get them to eat Indian food I would be back often...

This is my second time here. I love the place. Could you find better in Chicago? Maybe. I haven't yet. For those of you in Lake County craving Indian food, this is the place. Very good food, generous portions, courteous service, and reasonable price.

As far as i know this is the only Indian joint around for many miles. I love this place so much! The food is awesome. I wanted to write a review mainly to tell everyone to eat there. I would hate to see this yummy place go out of business and have to drive 25-30 miles to the nearest Indian place only to find that there food doesn't even come close to the Himalayan

The food at this place is Fantastic. I had chicken Vindaloo and my GF had Chicken Marsala . Although the first time they brought me the wrong dish, it was worth the way. The service was good and and Manager came and apologized for the mistake. Have a good meal. treat yourself to some great food.!

Service was prompt and attentive. My water glass was filled whenever it got low. Dinner seemed pricey given the quantity of food I did not like how they nickel and dime with the bread (it doesn't really cost them anything to make). However this is typical with Indian restaurants and I certainly cannot complain about the quality. I ordered the dish with goat simmered in spices with a side of naan. Both were excellent. I wanted to order the dish super spicy but the waiter cautioned me against it. However it ended up being a tad weak to me - if I return I will ask for the nuclear treatment :D

Friends of ours went recently, and they raved about the service at Himalayan Restaurant. They also said the food was great, and that they'd be going back soon. We went a few times while we were in the area. If you like Indian or Nepali cuisine, this restaurant has a lot to offer. Great food and drinks, friendly service, table cloths, cloth napkins, and lots of seating. Easy parking in a big lot. The bill can rack up quickly, but since this food is meant to be shared you don't have to order one whole entree per person. Their chilli heat level was repeatedly really low whether we ordered something mild or medium, so if you want it to actually be hot while in that medium range then take the time to assure your wait staff that you can handle hot food and will eat and pay for what they bring you without whining later. Also, their tamarind sauce has the requisite sweetness but is watery, and we've found it best to show them measurements with our hands for how large of a take-out box we want. This is a great place to bring loved ones or clients you'd like to impress.

I have gotten a lunch with a group of co-workers. It is a small store in a quiet place. The service is OK. The Lunch buffet is a small set, but it is well hidden in a corner. This makes the eating place looks clean and clear. I like this design. Food is good, not over spicy. I think it should be good for a family visit.

I'm no expert on Indian/Nepalese cuisine, but I know what I like. And I also know that a couple buddies of mine took me to supposedly one of the best Indian spots in Chicago and I was less than amused. Not only by the lack of flavor of the entrees, but also because of the exorbitant price for 8 squares of chicken breast dredged in some sort of curry sauce. So, when my mom and I decided to hit up this place after church last Sunday for their buffet (we didn't know they did a buffet at the time), let me tell you that after we left I was full and happy! Their buffet variety was pleasantly adverse and sufficient. From veggie entrees to their meat entrees, I'm sure that if you're into this type of food you would have found something you would like. I can't be specific as to what I had, there was some yellow slurry stuff, some red slurry stuff, some green slurry stuff, and then there were some rib tips in a brown meat sauce, chicken in a bright red sauce, and what looked like korean bbq'd chicken legs, thighs and wings. They also had these deep fried ball things: One had a hard boiled egg in it, and the other had a green mix of a mashed up chick pea or potato inside (is this a falafel?). And if you're bored of just regular rice, they had some sort of spicy white rice that was pretty bonus! Each item on the menu had a taste that was very different than the one next to it, and I made sure to try it all! I did NOT leave there disliking anything! After helping myself to a heaping plate, the server brought us freshly toasted pitas to soak up the what was now gray mess on my plate. It may not have looked good, but the flavor of it all was incredible. After filling myself (after I had told myself to take it slow) it was onto the desserts! They had mango ice cream out and since mango is my favorite fruit, I had to try it. The flavor of the ice cream was the MOST INTENSE mango flavor I've had on this side of the earth. I would have eaten the whole tray, but I like to think I'm not a dickhead. As for a warm dessert, they had this slurry that looked like applesauce but thicker and tasted like an apple cinnamon bun. If you're in the area, look up this place. Don't be worried about the dinginess of the surrounding area, the restaurant itself is very clean and is now one of my top 3 in the Lake County area.

For a party we had ordered food from this restaurant and the quantity was really less, most of the food was over with 30% more people to eat, finally we had to order Pizza for the party.

I've been twice for the lunch buffet and really enjoyed the food both times. It is a huge improvement over the old Bombay City restaurant that used to occupy the space. The dining area is a bit smaller and the buffet has shrunk a bit, but the food is fresher and higher quality. I especially enjoyed the dal makhani and the muttor paneer. The only thing that they can improve on is getting the check to me at the end of the meal. I only have 45 minutes for lunch, so it is important that I get in, eat, pay, and get out.

Solid food, good quality & service. Easily the best Indian restaurant in the NW suburbs. Also used them for catering, very reasonable pricing and on-time delivery. Lunch buffet had many choices, only $8.95/person.

We had ordered off of their menu and it was me and my husband and they messed up both of our food, maybe they wanted to make it special, but man it was bad. I ordered the butter chicken and what they brought me was shredded Tandoori chicken all burned in a stew type, I told them it is not Butter Chicken and why it tastes like Tandoori chicken, they told me they grilled it to make it different, they took it back to the kitchen and this time what they brought me was even worse, we shared my husband's stew which was a tasteless mutter paneer and we both got sick to our stomach . we had inquired abut medium heat, and it tasted like boiled peas. Horrible experience.

I rarely give one star reviews to establishments. But this one just completely warranted one. Every Friday me and a couple of buddies from work head out for lunch together. This Friday since it was my turn to choose I chose this godforsaken place based on the "good" reviews. Maybe I should have also paid heed to the not so good reviews. We got here around 11.30am Friday, and were seated immediately, but everything went downhill from there. The server we had seemed to be in a horrible mood and rolled his eyes at us when we said we need five minutes more to decide what we want to drink. I mean damn son, if I am paying to eat at your restaurant, the least you could bloody well do is not hound me about ordering drinks, eating as fast as possible and getting out of there (although that is what I wanted to do ten minutes later) The buffet was, to say the least, gross and abysmal, from pasty veg to chicken dishes missing the chicken. You could do a lot better eating at another restaurant, this place is a bloody miserable joke. Indian food is NOT SUPPOSED TO BE THIS WAY!

I was initially going to give this place a five-star rating. However, due to the service my friend and I received, I have to dock a couple stars. The restaurant was completely empty when we arrived. The servers were at the bar, talking amongst themselves. They didn't move when we entered. No hello. Nothing. It wasn't until I said, "hi" when one of the servers gave me an unenthused "hi" back, and took us to a table. To add onto the endless list of odd interactions, our server didn't speak till we placed our order. If I recalled, the only thing he said was: "Do you want naan?" Then, in came two other diners. I assumed the staff knew these two because all of a sudden, they stopped acting like someone just pissed in their cornflakes. I have to note that these two arrived much later than us. And this is when nepotism came into play. Not only did these two get their food before us, but their waters were consistently being filled while ours remained empty. They actually got their entire meal before we even got our appetizer. So we waited about twenty to thirty minutes-- after they got their food-- before our appetizer arrived. Furthermore, they ordered much more food than us, so the kitchen must've started their order before ours. It wouldn't be so obvious if they weren't seated right by us, and had two to three servers catering to them at all times. While I was upset about the lack of hospitality my friend and I were receiving, I can't deny that the food was delicious. The "Vegetable Assorted Appetizer" was an array of deep-fried goodness that varied in both texture and taste. The shell of the Vegetable Samosa was light and flaky, while the filling was well-seasoned. The Paneer Pakora was an unexpected highlight. The deep-fried batter that blankets the paneer cheese was super crispy, and the cheese was warm and wonderful. Texturally, the cheese reminded me of a denser tofu. It was quite good. As for my entree, I had the "Chicken Curry" with a side of naan. The curry was also good. It was full of flavor, and the chicken was succulent. The naan was still hot from the oven, and it paired nicely with my dish. It was actually the best naan I've ever had. I was willing to forgive this place entirely. That is, until our server carelessly threw down the bill, and walked away. That snapped me back into reality. So, in the end, while the food deserved five stars, the servers deserved none. It's a shame because I wanted to love this place. However, moving forward, if I were to come back to the Himalayan Restaurant, it'll be for takeout.

This is the best Indian restaurant I have been to in the north Chicago area. My husband and I order here somewhat often and are never disappointed. The only down side to this place is the price. We spend over $50 every time which seems ridiculous to us both but the food is worth it, that's why we only order for special occasions. It wouldn't be so expensive if you didn't have to order all the "extras" which I've always had just come with my dishes. I'm use to getting rice and naan included so having to by that adds to the bill a little bit. But overall I can't complain, the food is always amazing and I always have leftovers. Also because of all the negative reviews for service we have always ordered delivery so I'm not sure about customer service or atmosphere.

Generally, I really like their food. It's great to have some more ethnically diverse cuisine in Lake County. I've only been underwhelmed by their chicken wing appetizer which seemed a little bland and are cut a bit awkwardly. Everything else I've tried has been fantastic. Incredibly flavorful and really good spice. What really keeps me from giving The Hymalayan 5 stars is the cost for what you get. Everything is a la carte, including rice and naan. I ordered one entree, an appetizer, naan & rice for a bit over $30. Not bad if it's enough to share, but the Lamb Chili Masala was equivalent to a small entree at most Asian restaurants. The whole meal was good for one person, with a small bit left over. The food is great, but it is a bit pricey for carry out.

Came in for lunch after my brothers Navy graduation. The buffet was gross. Almost completely empty and what was left was dried out. My mother ordered some vegi pasty appetizer. Swear they just picked them from the disgusting buffet because they came like 30 seconds after she ordered them. If they were fresh from the kitchen then wow awful. Lamb kebob was (ground sausage?) completely tasteless and gritty texture. Disgusting. This place sucked. Plus its pricey. The good though is the staff was pretty attentive I guess. Naan was tasteless but warm at least. Pass on this place.

We have been there two times now and each time the service is attentive, but the food is paced well in that our entries are not coming in on top of our starters. The portions are generous but not over the top. The food is fresh and made very well esp fish curry, biryani rice dishes, chicken malai kabob, chicken curry, masala and chicken vindaloo. The samosa and momo are very good starters.

I went to this place recently. I would rate this as extremely poor, as this was probably the worst Indian food I ever had. I ordered the following dishes : 1. Chilli Chicken : I guess the cook had absolutely no clue what he was preparing, so dont order this over here 2. Grill Platter 3. Malai Kofta : This was prepared so horribly, it was like chilly in malai kofta which is never heard of.

I think this place deserves more of a 3.5 stars, but I feel like being nice. We ordered delivery from here because we didn't feel like going out in the snow. Delivery time was pretty standard 45 min to an hour. I was expecting it to be longer because it was snowing so much, but hey, I'm not complaining. There was a $5 delivery fee, which I didn't realize until way after the fact, but that's not too bad. The food was pretty good and the portions were good a decent size. I ordered the lamb tikka masala with 2 stars (spiciness level). It wasn't spicy at all, which was kind of disappointing, but it was still very tasty. It was about average priced for the Chicagoland area, which I personally think is too much (coming from California). I also ordered garlic naan, which was amazing. I love garlic and I love naan, so this wasn't surprising to me in the least. I was kind of disappointed that rice wasn't included, but once again, this seems to be the norm for the Chicagoland area. In the end, I didn't even need the rice, because of the naan. Overall, this place is awesome in terms of convenience and I'd definitely order from here again.

This place is AMAZING. I have been twice and tried close to 10 dishes (friends and I would pass dishes around family style) and I can't pick out one I dislike (I have only had the vegetarian dishes). The Navraatan Korma and Dal Makhani and Mutter Paneer are DELISH. The service is excellent and attentive. Only bummer-dishes do not come with Naan, and have to order separate. Not a deal breaker because a dish is about $10, so add $2 for naan and it's not bad. But still, something worth noting.

Another successful Yelp story here. I would never had known this places existed if I didn't notice some reviews of several Yelper friends. The ambiance is very simple, yet very clean and tidy. The wait staff was very prompt, even when the place was somewhat bustling. I went during lunch time and opted for the buffet which came highly recommended and for good reason. If your a novice of Indian or know it well, this is a great place to come. For the novice this is a great place to come and get yourself acquainted... especially during the lunch buffet. During the buffet they have the food labeled well, so although you may not be able to recognize it, you'll at least know what your eating. Don't be afraid, dig right in and more than likely, you'll like just about all of it. (the only exception is the desserts, and generally there is no middle ground... you either really like it, or hate it.) For those of you who know your way around the Indian fare, I think you'll like this place as well. I lived in India for three years and found the buffet very satisfying, albeit Americanized. Meaning, if your expecting the tandoori to have some good kick, you'll not get it here. (I'm hoping this changes when ordering from the menu.) The naan is good too and what I like here is they bring out a heap of it right from the start! Defiantly coming back here! Thanks fellow Yelpers!

North Chicago has a limited selection of good food but I came here one even and it was delicious Indian food. Whether it is authentic or not, the flavors played well together. I got the: Malai kofta: It was really good but there were so few pieces of the veggie bites in the sauce. That was disappointing. Chicken mukhani: the sauce was good but very liquidy. Portions were quite large for both and the meals came with naan and rice. i'm obsessed with fresh naan. Forreals. It was light and not oily. Because of these little things I would give the restaurant a 3.5 stars if I could. But after trying Curry Hut, I do prefer Curry Hut over Himalayan based solely on the cream sauce of the Chicken Mukhani. Parking was plentiful and I would return in the future to try to lunch. Based on the purely this dish in comparison to other places, it was not as good but good enough for me to come back!

I was on business trip to Waukegan and happy to found an ethnic food restaurant in Gurnee. I made a concise decision, and brilliant too, to try this restaurant. I am a foodie and and I am very picky about the food and I have my own benchmark when it comes to Indian restaurant. First of , the food was excellent, much better than I could find in Devon area. The thing that impressed me most was the service, who would have thought that this level of service is possible in Indian restraurant? Our server, Rack(sp?) was very helpful making suggestions and delivering our food. I will definately come back every time I am in this part of the world. Good job guys!

    - Food had no flavor ( and I am the kind of guy who does not like spices). - After dinner I had food coloring on my fingers - My wife and I definitely will not go back.

Should be 3 1/2 stars. Decent food and service but a buffet is a buffet and never premium quality. It was tardy and fine. Service pleasant.

Great place, well decorated. The atmosphere is very calm and the servers were attentive without being overbearing. We ordered onion bahji, chicken mojo, chicken tikka masala, and shrimp curry. Everything came fairly quickly and was hot and delicious. Good beer too!

The night we were there it was pretty quiet, so I hope it picks up for them and they stay around.

this is the best indian food in a ten mile radius. the ambience is quite nice, tables are cleanly set and the decor has been recently updated.

I love the decor and the staff is very friendly, but I have made better Indian food at home. That being said, I am a great cook. :) For the price, the lunch buffet was very good. I will return whenever I don't feel like cooking myself.

OM....

We were sad when the indian restaurant that was here closed down, but now we aren't feeling too bad. We really like this place. The service is a bit slow, but the food is always excellent.

It's yummy.

Portions are large & tasty. The mango lassi is sooo good. I've had the Nepalese items several times and always liked them. I've taken a few other people there & everyone else has always liked their meal, too. They wrap takeout really well, too, so there's no spilling in the car.
