Went here for lunch with friends. Super friendly staff. Very attentive service. Complementary chips & salsa were good- salsa not very spicy but decent flavor. Had a mixture if items- tacos, enchilladas, flautas- all delicious and made with fresh ingredients. Overall decent food for a decent price. We will be back.

Disappointing margaritas. You would think that a place that supposedly specializes in the cocktail would make a good one! Do not get the agave margarita- bland and overpriced. Also seemed like all of the waitstaff was new or in training. I don't know if that's a good or a bad thing...

I am a regular at Sergios and I am never disappointed. I really need the recipe for their salsa it is amazinnggggg. Plus the enchalada's (which i get everytime) are always so freaking good! I also love their dessert. The dessert nachos and the deep fried icecream really good as well.

Perfect for our girls nights. We frequent on Tuesdays for half-price margaritas. Good food, great price, nice portions. Always full if flavor. Service is spot on. Just wish they were open later!

I wasn't crazy about going here for dinner because of all the mediocre reviews but my husband wanted to try it out. He enjoyed his fish tacos but my enchilada plate was extremely disappointing. Bland, bland and more bland. If prepared right, isn't Mexican food supposed to have a nice spice to it? And last I checked, it's not too difficult to spice up foods. The chicken had no flavor and the sauce that came with it had no flavor. Come on now. The chips and salsa were good, I'll give them that. But that's not enough to keep me coming back. Sorry Serg,

Watered down drinks, food very average to kind of sucky, service was super sucky. Atmosphere fun so a few stars for that. Won't be back.

Sergio's used to be our favorite Mexican food in Geneva. We went for dinner on a Thursday night, it was crowded and the wait staff could not keep up what so ever. Waited ten min after being seated for a waitress to come around, considered leaving from the beginning and probably should have. Temperature in the dining room was extremely hot and uncomfortable. We Split an appetizer and an entree neither of which was anything special, and actually below average. Very disappointed and won't be back.

The chips and salsa are fantastic everytime, the fish tacos are the best. Actually everything here is good. Better get the king size margarita, it's enough for two. The service as always great. This is a must go place. Keep up the great service!!!!

Sergios is our favorite place for Mex in Geneva. The food is good to great, but the margaritas and other specialty tequila drinks are to die for. Servers can get overwhelmed at times, and the tiny kitchen is easily swamped, but it's worth the wait. Plus, did I mention the drinks?

  • Evan S.

Our meal started out on a bad note when we were advised after ordering our drinks that the advertised $5.00 of of $20 or more for checking in on Yelp was no longer valid. For this reason along with mediocar service I cannot give more than 3 stars. The food and drinks were good and will probably give them another chance at some point but not in the very near future.

Great salsa, good service, fast, excellent enchiladas! Loved the beans and rice too. Great ambience with the salsa, merenga and bossa Nova tunes going on in the background. Our server was there for us i n a heartbeat with refills and seeing if we needed anything. Overall a great experience.

Went here after a strolling through Geneva. We ordered the Cerviche fish appetizer which was seasoned to perfection. My tostada's were very good & very a generous portion for $8.99! My husband's fish tacos were great too - also $8.99! The server Baro was very polite & efficient! Good authentic Mexican food.

Hands down the best Mexican food in the area. Fish tacos are amazing, plus there are food and drink specials every night of the week. I wouldn't hesitate recommending Sergio's to anyone that asks.

After having eaten here about 6 times, I'd like to give this place a higher rating because the staff is good, but the food is quite bland. That said, its a pretty cool atmosphere, especially during the summer when the patio is open. I'd eat here again, but only for lunch in the summer time.

We liked it ---several locals disagreed but the margaritas were big and tasty .Had the fish tacos which were great .Not in competition with bien truca but also alot cheaper and no waiting for ever Younger friendly crowd

The molé on the enchiladas - best I've tasted west of Chicago. Spiced just right... and light on the queso... very homey feel to their food.

Lunch review. Avoid Sergio's during peak times. Sergio's is just too small for the crush of too many people. We went at 1:30 on a Thursday and owned the place with about 3 other couples. Plenty of time to ask a lot of questions about the menu from Jerry whose recommendations were very helpful. Sergio's decor is bright and cheery with a lot of windows. I like a place where I can keep an eye on my car. There is a convenient public parking lot right across the street. My older brother went with a pick two, a delicious beef burrito that was stuffed with the usual ground beef, rice, cheese, lettuce, sour cream and lightly grilled, and a tasty steak taco. I told our server Jerry that I was trying to decide between the chile relleno, the 3 drumstick mole or carnitas and he said for another $1 I could do a pick 3 and get one of each. Perfect. I liked each with the chicken mole being my favorite, not too greasy or salty and you could get the chocolate undertones for once. The chile relleno was house made and huge. I could have taken a lot more heat AND Jerry provided a ho-made looking hotter table sauce and it was perfect. The pork taco was also good, not too greasy, salty or overcooked like you get all the time. They slow cook and the carnitas still had a pink glow. Our meals came with small servings of rice and beans and better than usual friendly helpful service from Jerry. Our two lunches and one ice tea came to $25, fair enuf. Even though it was half price Margarita Thursday we still had a lot of things to do so went with their unsweetened peach iced tea. I didn't like it, and would have preferred a just plain not sweetened iced tea, but a little sugar helped. Too cool for the patio but it looked like it would be a lot of fun on a nice night. It is not going to be quiet out there as several big trucks confirmed instantly. So check your expectations and avoid peak times and plan accordingly. We thought the food was surprisingly good and look forward to a half price margarita night on the deck but it is going to be crowded and not the best margarita we ever had, but the best one we ever had on a patio in Geneva for $3.50.

Went here based solely on a recent review by the Kane County Chronicle to order the shrimp and avocado tostadoes that the reviewer raved about. I want to say that I am part Mexican and lived in Texas about 5 miles from Mexico and used to go eat in Mexico, a lot, both inland and on the coasts -- so you can say I am VERY picky about my Mexican food. Sorry, but the shrimp and avocado tostadoes were barely meh. Frozen shrimp cut into pieces so small I actually searched through the toppings for them. What was worse were the refried beans on the side that were out of a can -- yes, I can tell the difference. A Mexican restaurant can't make its own refried beans? The only thing quasi-spicy was the salsa that came with the store-bought tortilla chips. Los Burritos Mexicanos restaurant at Rt. 64 and Randall in St. Charles has more authentic Mexican food like my mother-in-law used to make. Sergio's Cantina, never again.

I would eat tacos and drink margaritas every day if I could, and I practically do! Sergio's boasts deals on these two items throughout the week. According to the sign out front margaritas are 1/2 price on Tuesday and Thursday. You can also get shrimp tacos on Friday. Unfortunately, I came on a Sunday and, as far as I can tell, there aren't any good discounts on those days. Nonetheless, we decided to check the place out since I've passed it almost every time I've been in Geneva. I mean, it's on State St, so it's not like it's easy to miss. We'd been hiking up and down the hills in this town all afternoon for a photo shoot, so we were very thirsty and requested lots of water right at the beginning. We quickly gulped down our glasses and were left with empty cups for quite a while. Our waiter finally returned with a pitcher of water and my fiancé asked him to leave it so we could help ourselves. He seemed to be able to mange that request better and kept refilling our pitcher as needed. We ordered the guacamole with bacon and pineapple. It was pretty interesting but I don't know if the bacon really added to this appetizer. I did like the pineapple, so I'm glad we tried something new. My fiancé got a chorizo burrito and I ordered the lamb street tacos with a side of garlic butter vegetables. We both really liked what we got, but I don't think I'd go out of my way for it. As was expected, the burrito was not nearly as good as our favorite hole-in-the-wall taqueria's, but the refried beans were really tasty. I enjoyed the lamb tacos very much but the vegetables were overly salted. For drinks we got shots of Frida Kahlo tequila, the horchata and a piñarita. The tequila was nice and sweet, the horchata was really great, and the piñarita is passable. I think I'll stick to drinks on the patio next time and see how they do their other margaritas. But only if they are 1/2 price.

Belated review: Had some awesome tacos, and the guac and chips were awesome. I don't like margaritas, but I tried their mango blended margarita due to peer pressure...AND LOVED IT!!!!!!!!

I was referred to this place by someone from my gym (go figure....) but there ARE some healthy options on the menu at this place such as "lite flautas" and "skinny" cocktails so don't fret if you're watching the scale, you CAN still eat out at this Mexican joint. Located in downtown Geneva, this place is on the corner with a public parking lot across the street. The inside is on the small side, but cute, nonetheless. The chips and salsa you get upon sitting down are very good. My friend opted for tamales and I got chicken flautas... they were very good. For drinks I had sangria and my friend ordered a house margarita on the rocks. I left very satisified after having a meal here, which was a late lunch on a Saturday. And and added bonus... $5 off upon checking in on the Yelp app! I also threw in an extra star for the fact this place did not give me heartburn...I'm not sure what it is about SOME Mexican restaurants resulting in that uncomfortable feeling after a meal, but I did not encounter it after this place. Happy me.

It was early afternoon & we had a party of 7 & asked for 3 separate checks. First of all our food took over a half hour & was just okay. Our server never showed up at our table after taking our order but when she finally served the first dish, we asked why we were never given salsa & tortilla chips & she said they were low on them so we had to ask for them! Of course our meal was ready so we didn't ask at that point. We got our checks but my friend's had 4 extra meals on it which was fixed when called attention to. My daughter had a coupon for Sergio's from Yelp & the manager said they wouldn't honor it. Then the owner came over & said "We'll take it if you want but Yelp put it on their site, not us". We will never return.

Sergio's was glorious when I first dined there almost three years ago. Over the years I've watched the staff grow increasingly careless and the food portions dwindle. The last time I was there someone in our party ordered the Tres Tacos with corn tortillas and was given flour three times: flour tortilla tacos on the plate, fresh tortillas brought to the table (again flour not corn), and ultimately corn the third time wherein we had to reassemble the entrée with the correct tortillas. The same meal yielded an abysmal fried ice cream. I've had it before and it was great (maybe six months prior), but most recently it was grotesque. The ice cream inside was frozen solid and freezer burned; the coconut flakes tasted stale; and the outer fried shell was neither hot nor warm, but cool/room temperature. The size of the burrito platter has shrunk precipitously. The burrito itself used to be the size of my forearm and now is closer to a double wide taquito, while the serving of rice (double rice, actually, since I never order retried beans) ends up being about four to five spoonfuls. I used to love it here, but I can't imagine I'll be back for quite some time as a result of this experience. La Quebrada and La Flama de Oro in east Aurora and Juquilita Tacos in North Aurora are all superior in both service and food quality.

Enjoyed a wonderful lunch here today! The guacamole is great as was the Queso Fondito! My husband had the Carnitas and like them a lot too! We eat a lot of Mexican food and thought over all we would definitely stop in again!

I've been to this place numorous times. Being Hispanic I know good Mexican food. It was my "go to" place for a few years. I had I bad experience a couple yrs back that I wrote a review, but recently I decided to go back and try again. Almost as soon as I walked it I walked out. I couldn't believe the lights they had on especially above the booths. They were on so bright it was almost blinding. I even asked the person that approached to seat us if they were going to be adjusted. I actually thought perhaps they lost something and were looking for it. lol. We left and went to lil owl.

Place was just "okay" for me. Went here with my family for my brother's birthday - when we arrived it was fairly dead, but then the crowds picked up pretty quick. - Chips and salsa were "pretty good". - My nachos were just "okay". While they were indeed loaded with everything, it looked like a big mess. 95% of the chips I picked up had everything that was on them just "slide off", so at best I ate a bunch of soggy chips with some residual refried beans on them. The sour cream looked as if it has been squirted on from a bottle - I prefer sour cream to just be a scoop or two on the side, not squirted all over the nachos as if it was salad dressing. I left half of what was left in the plate as I didn't want to scoop it all up with a fork and eat it that way. The stuff in the plate looked (the OPTICS of it, I mean) more like canned dog food than a good nacho platter. They were ok at best, but I would not get them again. - Beers are expensive. My brother got two Corona's which were about $9 together. A bit pricey. - My family all said their meals were "decent." - Our waiter service was okay. He was kinda slow at times, but he did get us chip refills and drink refills, so all was okay there. - Bathrooms are the "single, lock door type." One for men, one for women. One toilet, one sink - no urinals or multiple stalls or sinks. I do not even think there were paper-towels or a hand dryer in there. So only one person can be in there at a time, unlike most other restaurant washrooms which can be used by multiple people at a time and your privacy is still maintained. This kind of bathroom is more appropriate for one of those small, shin-ding gift shops or car/home insurance places, NOT a mid-sized restaurant. Now keep in mind this is a MEXICAN restaurant to boot, if you get my drift (I know most guys will). In peak times, lines can back up waiting for use of the bathroom and you will hear people knocking on the door. If anybody really has to get in there and it is backed up, I feel sorry for ya (or - go across the street real quick to Little Owl). All in all, just an 'okay' place for me. I can't say I'd never come here again, but I wouldn't go out of my way to make plans to come here either. I assume this place does fairly well (especially spring thru fall) MOSTLY because of the "location aspect" - being Downtown Geneva - and having a historic, prime location right off of State St. and the Fox River.

I love this place. However, they will not take 5 dollar off offer from yelp. They said it has something to do with a third party. Now the food....it's very authentic. It's inexpensive. And it's very good! It's in Geneva so after dinner you can do a lot around the neighborhood in downtown.

We wanted to love this place based on the street tacos we had at the Festival of the Vines a couple of weeks ago (steak CC). Either we were starving or they used a higher quality of steak at the Festival. But let's start at the beginning. The stale chips and what tasted like jarred salsa was not appetizing at all. We ordered the house margaritas on the rocks - my 15 year old son could make a better margarita and he doesn't even drink (that I know of). It tasted like pure lime juice on the rocks. Don't get me wrong, I love lime juice. I always have a lime available in my house. I'm not a fan of sweet n sour (all sour), what about triple sec or splash of OJ? Something to tame the taste. I had to wait for my tacos to arrive to even down it. At least it wasn't that expensive or I would have felt cheated On to the tacos. I can eat any fatty meat (prime rib, fatty ribs, bacon w lots of fat), but I cannot do gristle! I had to pull out at least 5 or 6 large pieces in my steak tacos. I grew up w authentic Mexican food. I never remember my uncle Lalo's tacos like this. The sauce was wonderful. Thank goodness it helped me get down the steak and the margarita. I also had a side of rice that came w my meal. Sooo under cooked. I know Mexican rice might have some firmness depending on the family but this was either overcooked sitting in a tin or way undercooked. I was sad seeing I barely eat rice. We had also ordered the shrimp tacos. The shrimp tasted fishy and the texture rubbery. The Pico served w I think some green verde, mediocre at best. The atmosphere - wish it was warmer and I could have sat outside. I felt it to be too bright, cafeteria style and SUPER loud. Plus our table was a random squeezed in table practically up against where the servers grab the food. It was like we were having dinner with the family next to us. I'm giving it 2 stars because I'm nice and I'm guessing a family establishment. We will never go back.

I still can't believe this place is in business. Came here solely because we wanted to sit on a patio and drink some margs but left feeling underwhelmed. Took almost 15 minutes for someone to take our drink order an we were given stale tortilla chips and when we ordered our food it came out 30 min later, cold. The food was bland and boring. Never again. Wish this place would close so something better could be at that awesome patio location.

Sergios was just okay to me. I ordered the spicy mango margarita. Waitress said it's really good, it was HORRIBLE! Their salsa is pretty good but the chips were stale. I ordered the Carne Asada combo that came with steak, which was good, but a little chewy. And it came with 2 beef enchiladas..now they were really good! Server was pretty slow, she kept disappearing. But all in all its a decent place.

  • Beth B.

Love the atmosphere and the margaritas and food are always great. Three stars because of service. Every time we come here the service is ridiculously slow. As we speak we are sitting at the table with a bowl of guac and no chips. And then the server argued with us that "one refill" on the Horchota means no refills. Don't really understand that one. That actually really pissed us off because on the menu it specifically says "one refill." RE-fill. Fix the menu if you mean NO refill. Edit.... Server did take the charge off for the refill and when we showed him the menu he said they're going to take that off the menu. Well.... Yes.

Half priced margaritas Tuesdays and Thursdays - includes house margaritas and fruity ones. $3.50 for a large glass, you can't really beat that! It's the same size as Lalos, but without the huge price tag of $11! Not as delicious as Lalos, but still pretty good. I tried both the mango and strawberry margaritas and preferred the strawberry. The mango one had a strange taste. There was quite a wait for a table with about 10 people crowded by the door. Luckily, our other half of the party had arrived half an hour early and had been waiting so that I only waited a couple of minutes before we got our table. For dinner, I went with the pick your own 2 combo option - I chose with tamale and enchilada. For $10, I got 1 chicken tamale, 1 chicken enchilada, rice and beans. Seems pricey for those 2 main entrees, but there were other options that may have provided more food. The tamale and enchilada were good. The rice was on the hard side, but decent. With enough half price margaritas, anything can taste good! We got the table that was right by the door, which may be the worst table at the restaurant since it's in the middle of a high traffic area and there's a draft every time the door is opened. Our waitress was quick, nice and attentive. Parking was pretty easy. There's a parking lot across the street and other side streets with parking. The restaurant doesn't have its own lot.

Especially with a Groupon discount, the place exceeded our expectations. The Mrs. got a citrus salad, so so good. I got a burrito (chicken). The free chips and salsa were delicious too.

Stopped in when we were starving saw their $2 taco sign. Nice location. Very nice outdoor area...pretty tables, nice shade, view of street, elevated... I might go for drinks just for that. The $2 tacos were eh... I'd say, "What do you expect?" but I'd think they'd make that a better temptation to explore the rest of their offerings.

I've been to Sergio's Cantina now numerous times- my Mom loves this place. I'd say the 3 star a-ok is exactly right for this place. The margaritas are good tasting and very large- but are likely made with a mix (I prefer the fresh ones from up the street). I've tried several different dishes here- the fish tacos, enchiladas, etc. Everything I've eaten has been fine- nothing terrible, but nothing great either. I do love that they provide free chips and salsa- and refills are free too. I will give Sergio's two major pluses- I have always had great service. I've been waited on by several different staff members, and they are always friendly, attentive, and able to answer numerous questions. I also think that Sergio's is a great place for groups. I've been here several times with parties of 10 plus people- and it is always a great time. Many of the other Mexican restaurants in the area are far too small for group gatherings- so anytime we want to do something in a big group, this is where we come. Because of the size of the location, and the competition, you can often find certificates or coupons for Sergios to get the cost down if you need- but it is also significantly less expensive than other Mexican restaurants in the area.

I'm a bit surprised by all the negative reviews. A little more space in this place might be nice (and since they can open the patio in the summer - there is for half of the year), but other than that that I enjoyed my meal here quite a bit! Lets start with the reason you came: Half price margaritas on Tuesday & Thursday! 2 of our strawberry margaritas were pretty good. One of my party said the flavor could be a little stronger, but I was OK with it when I tried their drink. My mango was plenty strong (in both flavor and booze) and tasted great! We had the Shrimp And Chorizo Queso Fundido for one appetizer. It was as greasy as you expect chorizo to be and the shrimp were tasty. One or two more quesadillas might be nice, but we made it work. We also had the pineapple and bacon guacamole. There was a nice little pile of small pineapple chunks and bacon on each side of a mound of guacamole that was a great flavor combination. When I saw it I was hoping for a little more quantity, but by the time we were done eating I realized that was uncalled for. I was stuck between lamb tacos, pork belly tacos, and the chile relleno combo. I went with the latter and was, again, a bit disappointed in getting 1 chile relleno (note - there's no "S" on the menu for this one silly!) however it was pretty good. Then I moved on the the skirt steak part of the combo and color me surprised - that was probably the best skirt steak I've ever had! Cooked perfectly with a sear to medium rare and the flavor was outstanding. The black beans, rice, and accompanying peppers were good - but nobody is writing home about those. After sitting back lamenting about my fullness I realized that, once again, the portion size was correct (and hey, it is a giant pain to make chile rellenos). 2 appetizers between 4 people usually doesn't leave me with anything to take home, but today we had 3 very decent take out boxes in tow. We brought a Groupon which presented no issue at all and the waitress was friendly and helpful. My tips: -Call your reservation in, we showed up to a half an hour wait and it looked like it was getting longer than that immediately. -Be adventurous and try a new dish! The menu has both the basic classics and some very interesting spins on dishes. -Make sure somebody in your party gets the skirt steak. I never thought the stuff could taste so good. My only complaints would be: 1) Our table for 4 was near the bar/entrance. Lucky me, that meant people would bump their rears into the back of my head regularly throughout the meal. 2) Someone in our party asked for red sauce and was given verde. This could have been a sound/busy/distraction problem, but sometimes things just don't work like you want.

So, This place has OK food. It is a little expensive for the quality and quantity. The service was mediocre. I can't say that it was all bad, their sprite was good and so was their enchilada. Here is why I only gave Sergio's 1 star. When you check in on yelp an ad pops up saying "$5 off an order over $20". Great!! Except when you go to redeem it they tell you that they don't accept it. The manager says that they didn't sign a contract so they don't accept it. Well... yelp doesn't just put out ads for the heck of it. They advertised for it and then said they just don't care. This place was not busy, and it didn't look like it was on the up and up. They could have taken the $5 off and saved themselves from this bad review where they may miss even more orders. I cannot advise anyone to go here. I am sorry.

I've been to Sergio's Cantina many times. One of my favorite things is the chips and homemade salsa (which is always complimentary). I love the hot salsa too, it has the perfect amount of heat for those that love an extra kick in their salsa. If you go in after 10pm they have a half price street taco menu which is a great deal. Tuesdays and Thursdays they have half price frozen fruit and house margaritas. If you like meat, I'd recommend Sergio's family recipe carnitas entree. The pork is slow cooked for over six hours with such richness in flavor and the cactus salad side dish that comes with it is delicious too. My favorite new summer drink they have is the coco loco (homemade horchata with rum). I love the outdoor seating to on the summer patio.

I'm amazed that the average is only 3 stars. We've never had a bad meal here. The carnitas are the best! $2 tacos a couple times a week. Great chimichanga. Friendly, efficient staff. Laid back atmosphere. Try it! You won't be sorry.

Was there last Saturday during wine fest in Geneva. It was very busy due to all the people in town for fest. Waited about 20 minutes to sit no issue eas told it would be longer so pleasent suprise. Even with it being super busy food, service, and drinks were all very good. Only disappointment was they ran out of shrimp so had to reorder one of meals but all was will definitely b back

This is a very casual place with a taco stand that you might find in the Baja peninsula as a motif. Service is just average at best but the food is decent. If you set your expectations appropriately, you will enjoy this place.

Great margaritas, love them and they put a beer in it and made it taste even better. The food was very good, not big on their Guac but I like it very spicy. Atmosphere was cool and the food and service very good

Came here on a bike stop from the dupage river trail with my daughter and nieces . I like the decorations...really does look like a mexican cantina. Waitress was nice and friendly. Service was fast but we did go there during non-peak hours at 4 pm on a Sunday. Last time we stopped in Geneva, we tried El Molcajate which was good but we wanted to try a different place. Here we got fish tacos, chicken tacos, chicken quesadilla, nacho appetizers, and sliders. Besides the sliders everything was just a little better than ok. The taste was actually kinda bland. Also it was kinda expensive for the kind of food we got. Almost $50 for a bunch of kids meals and one adult meal. All in all an ok bike stop but we'll probably try somewhere else again next time and I would definitely choose El Molcajate over Sergios if I'm in town.

Too busy and too slow of service on weekends but for lunch during the week it hits the spot! Awesome food and I love sitting upstairs outside. Great atmosphere, friendly staff, and not of all awesome food!

I am extremely experienced in Mexican dining and my rankings are based off of four things: Chips and Salsa, Entrees, Margaritas, and Waitstaff. Chips and Salsa: 9/10 - Fantastic! Almost perfection. Chips are great; one type of salsa but thats all you need. It's a green/red blended mix with the perfect amount of spice. Entrees: 3/10 - Pretty bad. I had a chicken chimichanga and I kid you not, it tasted like sushi. Had an extremely off-putting fish taste. It was also covered in an acidic sauce. No bueno. Margs: Was too turned off to try them. Waitstaff - 0/10 - AWFUL. Listen here people, this was one of TWO times in my life that I've ever not tipped. The waitress came twice total. Once to take our order, and once to bring the food. We never once got checked on, never got refills, never anything! We didn't get napkins or silverware with the meal either. We never got the check, we waited OVER an hour. We walked to the kitchen and asked for it and she gave us this look like "who are you?" and took another 10 minutes trying to formulate the bill. NEVER gave an apology. I happily gave her a big fat ZERO on the tip line. This service alone will prevent my fiancee and I from ever returning.

My hubby and I really dig this little casual place. The staff is friendly and attentive, the food is great and the prices are very reasonable. We have never had to wait for a table and the ambiance feels like a mini vacation. For us, it's a perfect joint for visiting 2-3 times a month. We are a big fan of $2 taco Wednesday. We show up early and have the place to ourselves. Great margaritas too- maybe not the best tasting but definitely STRONG.

Been here about 3 times. Sat outside. Nice area. Food rather pricey and just ok. Carne Asada was chewy and tough. Not going back.

Great food. My wife and I took our two 5 month-old babies and had a nice corner booth. She had a burrito and I ordered the Chille Relleno, which was awesome! Her margarita was a bit strong for her liking, but otherwise, everything was great. Our server was very attentive and the other patrons seemed to enjoy themselves as well.

Being Mexican I am very critical of the food at Mexican restaurants. That said this is one of the few places I actually go out to eat at since I usually head over to my moms place for home cooked food. I highly recommend the shrimp and chorizo queso fundido appetizer it's my favorite! My favorite dishes when I come here are the sopes, chiles rellenos and The rajas con crema tacos. The only thing that keeps it from being 5 stars is the service it can be very very slow sometimes I've waited 40 minutes before to get my check. Overall this place is one of the few Mexican joints I recommend do stop by and give it a shot

The first time I came to Sergio Cantina, I had the Aguacate Relleno and the Camarones Taco. Let's say, it wasn't my last visit, The Aguacate Relleno is a perfect appetizer with great mixture of shrimp, avocado, and the usual tomato and onion. Great taste. I of course had to add a splash of lime to it. As for the Camarones Taco, I love the combination of shrimp and melted cheese. It is a win, win for me! I believe this will satisfy your taste palate. I am getting hungry writing about this.

The food here is excellent, I highly recommend this Mexican restaurant for any ages. My wife and I have came here a few times now and this is my first review. Here is my take. They sit you wherever you want table or booth and quickly bring you complimentary chips and salsa and order your drinks. If you are a Margarita drinker I recommend the bulldog. It has a mini Corona in it as well with the slush and other liquors. Personally I have never tried the Mai Thai, but my wife recommends it here as well. As for getting the drinks the process is a bit slow and should pick up a little bit. As for the food it is excellent, well cooked and served pretty quick so if your trying to have a few drinks in between apps and chips hold off a bit. Hope you enjoy this place as well and thank you.

I'm shocked. Stunned. I moved to Illinois last year after 26 years in Southern California. There is almost NO good Mexican food in Illinois. I feel like I've tried EVERY restaurant. And every time, disappointed. This place is over 20 miles from my house and I will drive there next time I want GOOD Mexican food. It's NOT a grease truck. You can find those. The salsa is THE BEST I'VE EVER HAD IN THIS STATE. The chips are made fresh. We had three rounds and it was all FREE. Unheard of in IL. I ate three bowls of that salsa. Mild kick, but it's the flavor that was delicious. The chicken mole was like $12 and there were two large chicken breasts covered with homemade mole. Delicious. Enchilada with roja sauce was incredible and the avocado tostada was also incredible. My SIL had the coconut crusted tilapia. Not authentic, obvy, but she liked it. I wouldn't order it. Fried fish isn't my thing. The queso (which I don't like as it's not popular where I'm from) was excellent and much like a fondue instead. No Velveeta here, folks. Real cheddar! I'll get the guac next time for sure. My only issue was that they use chicken stock in their rice and I don't like that. Also, I could've used more black beans on my plate-- as they don't have refried and their pinto beans aren't veggie-friendly. But will I be back, ABSOLUTELY. It's worth the gas money. Love this place.

I don't know what's up with the poor reviews from before, but I respectfully disagree. The chips and salsa were free. The food was all fresh. The wait staff was all friendly even though they were busy. I wen on Tuesday, and they had half off Margaritas (yum!) and we had a great time. Also: The ambiance was amazing. A bit cheesy, but I've been to Latin America multiple times, and it reminded me of a restaurant there that I frequented. I didn't give it 5*'s because it was pretty loud.

If I woke up one fine day and had a hankering for a big ol' plateful of Bland, this is the place I'd go. Like Roger Ebert says, 'there's no excuse for making a bad movie,' I feel the same way about food: how can you run a restaurant and settle for plying your customers with mediocre chow? Especially Mexican--if you have fresh, top quality ingredients and a chef with a bit of pizzazz, it's nearly impossible to go from 'Ole!' to 'uno mas cerveza, andale, andale...pa-tooey!' (See my review for 'Elote' in Sedona, for what Mexican food SHOULD be.) Such was my experience here. The place itself is inviting--nice patio, perky waitstaff, tasty chips and salsa. But, instead of great South of The Border cuisine, the food simply goes south. The steak in the tacos seemed to be shorn from a new breed of bovine--the Chewy Gristle--and the tortillas they were wrapped in seemed straight off the shelf of the nearest supermercado. Rather like a thin Mexican Frisbee--cold, hard, and muy, muy bland. Nachos? I would like to say that they're a step above what you'd get at a Friday's or a Chili's, but sadly, I cannot. Whole lotta 'meh.' Where's the spice, the zing, the fresh just-picked-it-out-of-the-garden-knockin'-on-your-taste-buds kinda 'wow!' we want in our Mexican? Somewhere else, apparently. I read in someone else's review of this place that there is an actual Sergio, and he's a very nice guy. I'm sure he is, and I wish him all the best in his cantina. But Serge: if you want to be more than just a memory in the Geneva Culinary Consciousness, I suggest 86'ing the canned ingredients, and going for a giant helping of 'Fresh.' Makes all the difference between 'adios' and 'welcome back.'

The carnitas were good that I ordered. A little to greasy for my taste. The margaritas were pretty spectacular though. You could tell they use fresh lime juice instead of the typical sweet and sour mix. If I am back in the area, I will go somewhere different, but overall pretty decent if you are in the mood for Mexican.

  • LTine M.

Let me start by saying that Sergio is one of the friendliest restaurant owners I have ever met. He makes an effort to make his patrons feel like family, which is nice that he takes the time among all of the typical restaurant chaos going on during an average night. I've been here a few times, but this last time I ventured out of my typical enchilada meal. I went with carne con napales (cactus), al pastor taco and chile relleno. It was all sooooooo delicious. If you like sweet dessert drinks, ask for a Ducle de Leche. It is Chocolate wine, Coconut Rum and Horchata. Kind of like a mexican mudslide! They don't have a lot of room inside of the restaurant, but they just opened up a second outdoor seating area called the Daiquiri Deck. This should be a good spot to hang out over summer.

Super slow service all around. The first time we came it was slow, and they messed up our order (which took even longer), but we decided to give it another try. Unfortunately the second time was the exact same way (they messed up our order again too -- and it was something totally different!) The food is ok, but not worth it.

Super fun couples-date night atmosphere! Staff was friendly but waiter forgot to bring us silverware and then he brought out our appetizer (shrimp cocktail) but no plates? Both times someone from our table had to get up and find them ourselves. (grabbed - with employees watching but not offering help - from the counter the servers picked the food up from. Also, the rice tasted like instant rice. It was not the "authentic" food I was looking for. Not sure I'd eat there again but it was really a fun place to have some drinks and hang out. Highly recommend the agave margarita - it was top notch!!

I was hoping for something so much better in Geneva. The location is fantastic, but the service was horrible, the ladies bathroom was disgusting (brown surprise on the floor), and the food was average. The outdoor seating was the highlight of this experience for me. Our waitress may have been new to the job, but it took forever to get our drinks (one drink at a time was served), she rarely checked in with us, messed up drink order, didn't bring silverware until all of the plates were on the table (again 1-2 meals served at a time), no napkins were given while we snacked on chips and salsa. I enjoyed the alambre, but the rest of my party was underwhelmed with the food.

They wouldn't honor the check-in offer, which was a little sad. The chips were good but our service was not. The fish tacos were ok, the margaritas good.

There's nothing spectacular about Sergio's. There is also nothing terrible about it either. The prices are reasonable, and their menu is typical of any restaurant with mexican fare. It's a very small restaurant. We had to wait 15 mins for a table on a thursday night. Not too bad, but I was getting hungry. I got the chicken tacos, and my friends ordered a chicken burrito, chicken quesadilla, and fish tacos. All said that they were good. Nothing amazing, but not bad. All of the waitresses were nice to look at too, except ours, because his name was jeremy. Nice guy, but really slow with refills on drinks. Take or leave this place; I'm not going to go out of my way to come here again.

Wow the food here is great!! The salsa and chips they give you is very flavorful. We started off with nachos and chorizo and shrimp con queso fundido. The nachos came out full of toppings and the chorizo and shrimp was great. The chorizo was not as greasy as most places. The melted cheese on top of the chorizo really made it super delicous. For my entree I had the carne asada combo which come with bean, rice, pico de gallo and 2 enchiladas. My fiancee ordered steak fajitas which smelled incredible. They tasted just as good as they smelled. The portions here are huge! The food quality is above average and the price is just right. We will definitely be coming back!

We had a Groupon to this place. We tried it at Festival of the Vine and it seemed pretty good, but the Yelp reviews were not very high so we were apprehensive. We walked in and were seated at the bar. We showed the server our Groupon, and proceeded to order. The Groupon said that we had the choice of nachos of quesadillas. We opted for the nachos. We told the server, and she said that they only came with cheese with the Groupon - yet the regular menu had it with chicken and/or steak. So seriously people? You are going to take meat off nachos just because we have a Groupon? That is not cool. Once the nachos came, the toppings were sparse. The cheese was not even melted, and the ingredient that they had most of was lettuce. Not good. How do you mess up nachos? Our Groupon also came with 2 house margaritas with "premium" tequila. These were the weakest margaritas I have ever had, and the tequila did not taste very premium. They looked good, but were very disappointing. They come out of a slurpie type machine. Not very authentic, as someone else posted here. We then ordered the grande taco platter (2 steak and 2 carnitas tacos) and the coconut shrimp. The steak was pretty good, but the carnitas were just so-so. They were extremely greasy and salty. Also, they looked like ham! The server said that it was because they only use salt and fat to cook them in . Even though she said it was pork butt - seems like ham to me! Yuck. The coconut shrimp was pretty good but not very generous. My wife was slightly grossed out because she hates refried beans, and her plate very clearly started with refried beans on it that had been wiped off (but not completely) and replaced with black beans. Pretty gross. Our bill would have been around $52 had we not had the Groupon. I would have been even more disappointed if I spent that amount of money at this place. Also - this place made me sick the next day. Will not return.

Bought a deal on living social and stopped by to give Sergio's a whirl. I thought the place was clean and lively. Loved loved loved the guacamole. For me it is the perfect comb of avocado, tomato and cilantro. Service was good and the chicken enchilda verde was perfect. Just the right hint of lime. I had the chicken quesadilla's and there were ok. My only complaint would be that the chicken was a bit dry in both dishes. We will be back just for the guacamole! maybe the chicken will be better next time.

Love going here! Chip and salsa are to die for! Their margarita with sangria in it is quite possibly the best margarita I've ever had. Chicken enchilladas is my "go to" item on the menu...amazing! Affordable prices too. always coupons online.

In short familiar with the location got a 10 for 20 Groupon, arrived about 130, not busy 2 at 1 table 2 at bar. We were told by the person behind the bar to sit anywhere. Sat at a booth with a very wobbly table. Moved to an unwobbly table but choices were limited because of 4 unbussed tables. Ignored for 10 minutes without so much as a hello. Left. F- Not going back.

bad service. Be careful of what you order. You may be surprised when the bill arrives. Had an issue with overcharging on drink "specials" premium 'rita was far from premium. Food is good hence the 2 star rating, however service in the restaurant business should be taken more seriously.

I love Sergios. We go there about every other month, and always have good service and good food. They don't have a gluten free menu, but most of their corn-based items are gluten free. The owner was able to help us in deciding what gluten free options were available. Both my husband and I love the fajitas, and I also love the fish tacos and mole chicken. It is not fancy-fusion, artsy food. It is tasty food that is flavorful and filling. (We always have enough to take home for lunch the next day.) We use restaurant.com certificates, and it couldn't be more affordable. Affordable??? In Geneva??? For good food??? Yes, I know, they are a diamond in the rough.

Today was our first time here and I'll start by saying we will be back. We arrived around 5:00pm on a Sunday and didn't have to wait for a seat. Everyone was friendly and attentive. Party of 4 and ordered guacamole....I thought it okay but everyone else thought it was good. I honestly don't get why places mix real avocados with mushy mixed guacamole like "wholly guacamole" stuff, but most do and Sergios does too. The chips and salsa were very good and tasted fresh..my hubby would have liked it hotter. I got a combo platter since I wanted to try a lot of stuff. The sope and tostada were tasty and the steak was delicious. Not chewy or grisly at all. The enchilada was cheese and mole and that was just okay...needed more heat less sweet. The rest of my party got carne asada dinners and they loved them. When they ordered the dinners, they weren't asked how they'd like the meat but they all came to the table PERFECTLY cooked. My mother also had enchiladas on her plate that were beef which was a big hit around the table. The meat was excellent and tasted like ropa veija. YUM! Overall I'd say the food was really good and since we had a coupon I can't complain. For us it was a 10 minute drive and we all said we'd go again with or without a coupon.

Not great. Actually, made me quite ill for a few days. The enchiladas verdes were lackluster and treated way too heavily. Not good. The chips and salsa were very good, however!

I think "authentic" is pushing it. I may be biased living in Pilsen, but I don't think authentic margaritas come from a machine with a swirly thing in it. That said, this place got the job done, considering we'd ridden here from Aurora along the trail, it had been raining on and off, and our asses needed to be seated on something without wheels. At least my bony, flat excuse for an ass did. I got a strawberry mojito and a pineapple mojito which were both good, and no, I was not double fisting it. I am not that much of a drunkard. Jeez. The chips were intensely greasy, and I mean this in a great way. Excellent. Tacos were fine, but nothing to scream about. Foodwise, I doubt I'd come here if it were in the city or if other things were open (damn you Memorial Day). However, our server was very friendly and even loaned us some towels to dry off our bike seats when we left. Thanks to her, nobody had to look like they peed their pants.

Overall I liked it and would definitely go back again. I thought the chips were cold and maybe a bit stale but it didn't stop my wife and I from eating them and the guacamole. The salsa was ok. I special ordered a side of enchillada de pollo in mole sauce and a single flauta de pollo. The mole was excellent and the flauta was the best I've had since my brother last Mexican fiest! I also ordered the carne asada and chili relleno combo. The carne was fantastic but the chili didn't have much flavor. My wife and I will definitely go back for the mole, flautas and carne asada. Especially for Margarita 1/2 price night on a hot day. I can't wait to have the mole on different proteins next time. We had a great time...good music and a nice atmosphere.

I wanted to try this place for awhile and purchased a Groupon. The service was really good, our waiter was really nice and helpful. The pomegranate margarita was AMAZING! I tried a frozen mango margarita and I wasn't impressed and I also tried the 32 oz. fish bowl mango drink and it didn't taste like mangoes and they didn't have any of the Swedish fish left. The salsa and chips I could have eaten all night, so tasty. I had Chiles Rellenous with rice and refried beans. The beans had a funny taste so I didn't eat them. My whole meal was luke warm and wasn't all that great. I tried the place and wasn't impressed. I'll stick to the other Mexican joints I usually go to that are way tastier then this place. If you do go I recommend the chips and salsa and the pomegranate margarita!

I bought a Groupon Now and went for lunch. If you are going for a quick bite at lunch...don't choose Sergio's. There was one server for the whole place and he appeared to be overwhelmed and not able to keep up with all of the tables. The chips and salsa and the fried ice cream was good as well. We got the lunch specials, fish tacos and lite tacos and they had absolutely no flavor. It was bad. We didn't drink but after telling my friends about lunch they all told me that the only good things about this restaurant are the drinks and dessert.

My boyfriend and I bought a groupon for this place and had heard it wasnt bad so we decided to check it out,,,,,I wouldnt of even paid the $22 for the groupon if I knew the terrible establishment we were about to walk into. We got there and stood at the door for a good 3 mins before someone even said hello to us and showed us a table, then we sat at the table for another easily 8 mins before someone greeted us.....Let me tell you the service did not get any better from there....we ordered ordered a coors light bottle and recieved a corona light bottle and a peach margarita on the rocks and got a frozen one.....ok we arent super picky its not the end of the world.... So for our app we ordered a chicken quesadilla and it not only took like 25 mins to come out, it literally was made for a small child....if we didnt get chips and salsa when we sat down I would not be very happy Our groupon allowed us to get any two entrees on the menu, so I figured "Hmmm why not order the most expensive thing?" so I did.....WOW DISGUSTING!! It was the Sergios Ultimate Platter, which apparently is like the best thing there,,,,,For the first time in my life I had to send back food....It was supposed to be like 3 meats and rice and beans and it was literally laying in a two inch pool of grease, when I explained to the waitress that it was not good....20 mins after she dropped it off....she tried to argue with me and tell me that thats how its supposed to be and i should just eat it, I told her that I had chorizo before and it was never that greasy and that I would not eat it....so with an attitude she asks me what else I would like to eat....I told her chicken tacos and she told me with a smart ass attitude that I should probably get the grilled not shredded because the shredded might also have some grease in it....I was appalled I just wanted to leave at this point.... This is the real kicker...the meal that she gave me comparable to my $16 dollar meal was ONE chicken taco on a small app plate....COMMON!! Ive been in the industry for 6 years and that is just UNBELIEVABLE! I will never be back to this place again the food was terrible and the service was even worse, I will make sure anyone who mentions this place knows its a total waste of their money.

The service was friendly but not great. Tilapia was under-cooked and all the silverware and glassware seemed to have food or finger prints on it. Very disappointing. The rest of the food was decent but nothing impressive. I wouldn't eat there again.

First, the music is loud and BAD.. The service was SO S_L_O_W, the pastor tacos were DRY as a bone and the tortilla soup was crazy salty and the chicken in the soup tasted gamey. Overall, not a good experience. And we went there for my parents anniversary lunch. What a mistake.

Certainly one of the best Mexican places in Geneva. The patio can be noisy during traffic hours, what with large trucks and all going down the hill to the river, but aside from that we love the lunch and dinner menu's indoor and outdoor seating.

I've been here twice now, and probably wouldn't return if I didn't have a darn coupon to use up. The first time, my husband and I visited on a busy Saturday night, waited about 30 min for a table (note - there's really no place to wait if you don't have a spot at the small bar) and had a very average meal. Nothing great, and service was just so-so. A sucker for a deal, I decided to give them another chance and recently purchased a deal for $20 worth of food for $10. I'd seen their new "Daiquiri Deck" advertised, and was further enticed by their half-price house margarita deal on Tues/Thurs. Coupon in hand, my friend and I headed over there at 6:30pm on a Thursday to enjoy the nice weather on the deck. And... there was a 45 minute wait to sit outside. Having waited around for a table here before, and knowing it's a lot of awkward shuffling around to get out of people's way, we opted to skip the outside dining and were seated at a booth inside. We peruse the menu and ponder the half-price margaritas for 5 minutes, then 10, then 15... all while three servers attend all of the tables around us without making eye contact whenever they walked by. No water, no chips, no service. We finally asked the hostess who our server was, and she said she'd try to find out. Another five minutes pass, during which time we call another nearby Mexican place to find out what their wait time is, and decide to bail. A very short drive away, we are seated immediately, and within 2 minutes have chips and a friendly waitress ready to take our drink orders. I still have my coupon to use at Sergio's, but I really don't want to go back.

Went on a Tuesday night because our Groupon was about to expire. Sat on the outdoor deck and at 5:30 the place was nearly empty but by 6:30 it was full. The food was good and the server was friendly and attentive. We had the quesadilla appetizer and it was very good and generously filled. Free chips and salsa are served and the chips seemed to be fried up there but could have used some salt. Not bad but a bit bland. I had some beef and pork tacos that were very good. My dinner came with four of them, each of which had a double, soft corn tortilla. I had read another review that was critical of the pork because it was pink. It turns out that the pork is slow roasted and comes out pink because if it. It was fall-apart tender and very good. Actually, my favorite part was the unique, apparently home-made salsa they served to put on the tacos. It was pretty spicy but had the wonderful flavor of roasted chipotles. The Groupon came with house margaritas which were just okay but all house margaritas are usually just okay. We would definitely go back. Overall, a pleasant experience.

Nice little location in downtown Geneva that is cozy and quaint. The restaurant was crowded, which can be expected because it was saturday night. The food itself was good as everyone in our group liked what they got. The portion sizes were ok but the you could tell they skimped a little bit on the amount you get. The chips and salsa were great and made for a good appetizer. The service was good considering it was crowded so I couldn't actually gage them on a normal night. Overall this is a nice place you should try if you live in the Geneva/Batavia area.

Thank You Groupon for helping me find Sergio's Cantina!!!! Omg where do I even start....My friend and I were taking a class out in St. Charles and decided to get the groupon to try this place out. For $24 you got an appetizer, 2 margaritas and 2 entrees...up to $53....I mean how do you pass that up. We came in about 11 and gave our waitress the groupon and this is the first time the place actually knew what they were doing with it and didnt ask a million questions...THANK GOD!! They give you salsa and chips when you sit down and this salsa is AMAZING...probably the best salsa I've ever had. It had a get spice to it and the homemade chips just added to its greatness. We then got our 2 margaritas and they were HUUUGE!! Normally I do not like regular margarita, i get frozen ones but these were great and you could actually taste the alcohol in them. we ordered the chicken quesadilla for our appetizer and they were so stuffed with chicken I think we could have just made that our meal and were both full from just those!! O believe me we still tried our luch ;) For lunch I ordered the cheese enchiladas in red sauce and they were so good. They were filled with this amazing cheese and the red sauce had a really good flavor to it. The only thing I would do different is ask for no sour cream on them cause they put a lot on them and I had to scrap it all off(my fault for saying no sour cream). The enchiladas also came with a side of rice and corn AND refried beans....I had so much food I didnt even know what to do!!! All the food was really good and VERY authentic. *Yelp has a check-in offer if you dont have a groupon*

I have been to Sergio's on numerous occasions and it honestly keeps getting better. Excuse me as I totally talk about booze first. I absolutely love their Mojitos! There are so many choices such as mango, coconut (my fav), peach...the list goes on. I am not much of a margarita drinker but I have heard they have good ones and also cheap ones on Tuesday and Thursday. When I first tried this restaurant I wasn't too excited about their food, but they have really started to step it up. I think they needed to get established. One of my favorite menu items is the steak nachos. They are huge and the steak melts in your mouth, totally not what you'd expect on nachos. I am also a fan of the fish tacos, they have a healthy and a breaded version. The sauce is just so good. For dessert, get the churros. So good! Overall, Sergio's has great food and drinks for a great price.

I've only been here once, and went with my husband and the in laws. I must say we were all pleasantly surprised with this place. I had the fish tacos, which were awesome. The fish is battered and fried, but is NOT greasy. My husband had their taco platter, which included some carnitas, which were fabulous (juicy and great flavor). My in laws had shrimp tacos and chile rellenos, which they both loved. Go on Tuesday or Thursday for half priced margaritas. This is located in an area that has many upscale and tasty eateries, including Bien Trucha, which has phenomenal food........BUT this place is worth a shot at least once.

I should really be rating sergios 1 star since we were turned away. But I had been here once before about 15 months ago, the place is small, but food is not bad. However, about 2 mondays ago around 7:00-7:30 (which their hours state they r open until 10 pm), when we got there the hostess told us they are not seating because they have been slow, I asked her to repeat herself as we just drove 20 minutes to get there, and she repeated that they are going to close early b/c they are slow so they are not seating anyone else. This confused my husband & I as this was 2-3 hours before their closing time & at that time, there were 3 other tables of customers there (which is about 1/4 of their tables filled). So of course we left, disgusted and have no plans to ever go back there again. I could maybe understand if there were no other customers there, however there were several other customers there and this was several hours before their listed close time, I find this unacceptable & shows a lack of customer appreciation.

I went on a Saturday afternoon and sat at the bar while I waited for my date to arrive. The bar service and prices were great, and after one beer I snagged a table for two. By the time my date arrived the place was packed, and there were only two servers on. But it didn't matter. Every aspect of the service was friendly, efficient and spot-on. Then the food came out. And holy goodness, was it incredible. I had the flautas, and not only was I blown away by the flavor and the price, I was bested by the portions. I didn't complain, though, because those leftovers proved to be a fine dinner for me later in the night. I will be going back, and I will be bringing friends!

In the words of my good friend Lady Gaga, "Eh, Eh (Nothin else I can say)." Place was decent as far as Mexican food goes, but nothing to really write home about. I started off with the Millionaire Margarita made with Patron, Black Raspberry liqueur, Grand Manier, and Chambord. You would think that with all that booze you could taste the alcohol. You couldn't. I guess for some that is a good thing, but personally I like to taste the alcohol in my drinks (the probability of you having to peel me off the floor is smaller). I later switched to a skinny margarita made with a lime juice and artificial sweetener. I specifically ordered this because it doesn't have margarita mix in it, gross. There is nothing I detest more than ruining perfectly good tequila (I'm talking good tequila, not Jose) with that god awful prepackaged margarita mix. I actually really liked the skinny margarita and would order it over the others. We ordered guacamole as an appetizer and it was good. Made fresh, lots of onions, had a bit of a kick too. 2 of the 3 meals, however, were kinda lack luster. A friend ordered the mango coconut shrimp and she really liked it. The other ordered chicken fajitas and was disappointed and I ordered a chorizo chimichanga, which was really, really greasy. I ended up mainly just eating the rice. Service was good. Kind of a smaller place, had about 15 tables and a bar. Dining room was clean as where the bathrooms. I could see myself here again having dinner or pregaming it up before going out. But again, the food was kinda average.

In the old Potter's Place spot, this Mexican restaurant has really turned the old space into a clean, cozy and bright space (also feels cleaner than the old place). I had the FISH TACOS (yes!) and they are the classic variety -- breaded whitefish, fresh cabbage topping, nice sauce. A bit of El Yucateco habanero sauce at the table and we're talking TASTY! And at $10, affordable! My wife had the combo -- with an enchilada and a chile relleno so spicy she was complaining all the way home. She wasn't upset at the flavor -- just surprise at how spicy the chile was. Note to self: Get chile relleno next time. I tried the "Cadillac Margarita" at $8, but was disappointed that it was so sweet. Obviously, the advertised "Choice of tequila, Grand Marnier and fresh lime juice" was supplanted by some premix margarita mix. Too bad. The salsa is bland and runny, too. Service is perky, and the whole place seems friendly enough. I recommend a visit.

I liked Sergio's. The food was, if not brilliant, at least predictable and filling. I had the trio combination... I did have a little problem finding the enchilada, it blended into the plate so well it might as well have been in salsa camoflage. What brought us in was a phenomenal Groupon, $15 for $30 with a $10 gift card toward our next visit. One negative, be prepared for some serious noise levels.

This place is so freaking gringo! It goes well with the backdrop of downtown Geneva. But, really, who am I to judge? Been here on a couple of occasions and service has been decent. Sometimes slow. Outside dining is nice. Chips and salsa are ok and probably the most authentic tasting part of the meal. Tostadas are tasty enough. Tacos are ok, but dry. Al pastor is pineappley... so if you prefer that variety, you are in luck. Mole is too bitter for my taste. Burritos, rice and beans are formidable.

Wife and I sat on the new Daiquiri Deck after 8pm on Friday night. Server was attentive and friendly, food service very slow. She apologized and check on kitchen several times. Also complained about computer system she was stuck with....slow and inefficient. When food finally arrive, quality was good. Sergio may have too many tables for the size of the kitchen, and needs a new computer system for the staff.u

I love your margaritas! It's very hard to find a good margarita in the summer, nothing can compare to yours.

I was disappointed with my food. Fish tacos were pretty dry, and needed another glob of the sauce. Fish was nice, clearly a real piece of fish which I appreciate. Margarita was very weak. Would have liked some booze in there..

  • Adam B.

I have a friend who works there, but what can I say? The outdoor deck is fine for a hot day. The salsa has a decent flavor to it, but that much liquid in the bottom of the bowl is not good. Also, the fajitas were poor quality. I went back once more and had the taco platter with carnitas and steak and had a slightly better experience. That said, aside from a drink, I just can't recommend this place.

This place is honestly really gross. Last time I was there the chefs didn't wear gloves and definitely weren't up to standards with washing hands. There are spiders in the straw overhang as you walk out to the patio so be careful. The food is really bland. In the area and want real Mexican food? My fav place to go is Bien Trucha-not too bad on prices and worth the wait, if only I lived closer! It's almost too good to be true.

My parents and I decided to give this a shot as they now occupy what was another Mexican restaurant that they frequented. The service was great, very prompt at refilling water and chips. I had a margarita which was delicious, and chiles rellenos which were also quite good. The atmosphere is kind of like a sports bar, cheeseburger in paradise, and mexican restaurant all rolled into one. So nothing bad to say about the place. It's not the best value, but it's not the worst. That said, I would go to El Puente down the street instead.

I've been back many times since writing the first review, the margaritas have been better every time. Try the blue agave margarita, and don't forget the special price on fish tacos on Fridays.

We stopped in after our 1st choice had no available tables. The feel was very casual and clean for the most part but the booth we sat in was not too comfortable. The salsa was very good as it had a lot of lime and was the right balance between sweet and spicy. The sangria was very good! Our meal was just average. My lite enchilada's were warm (not hot) and the tortillas were a bit hard. Overall, the flavor was good, but the temperature (lukewarm) was terrible. The staff was friendly and helpful. In my opinion, the bill was a bit overpriced for the ambiance and quality of food. I will probably not return.

Sure, it's not the fancy pants too good for reservations place up the street, but we were happy we stumbled on Sergio's. Ordered tacos a la carte, all pretty good. Al pastor probably the best of the bunch fish tacos were good not great. Generous portions. Great service from Hilary. Good churros (kids size was good enough for us) and fried ice cream for desert.

Nothing spectacular. Great location. Super hot inside, had to peel myself off the vinyl seats. Disappointed they close at 10pm. Service was very slow. Loud, but fun atmosphere. Guac was good, not great. Shrimp fajitas tasted pretty good, rice tasted like an uncle Bens version, not a big refried beans fan..so I can't say if they were good. We had a pitcher of margaritas...which was filled to the brim with ice... They were ok. I think I'll try elsewhere next time. Not horrible, not great, too hot... So maybe a place to try again in the winter?!

This is probably my favorite restaurant, great salsa, great margaritas, great food great dessert! It's true Mexican salsa, it's supposed to be runny, not chunky and obviously, being a Mexican restaurant, your food is supposed to be spicy. I don't think the Chile rellenos are spicy, but some people don't have a high tolerance for heat. Oh, and be careful of their Margarita buckets! That's how I ended up with my beautiful daughter. Lol...we call her our charm from sergios.

Trying not to abandon the "don't eat there for a month after it opens" philosophy, we finally got around to going there last week (late June). Sergio's has done a thorough remodeling from the tired, grimy old Potter's Place and the place looks great now! The place is rather limited in seating but the outside deck is nice when the weather's on your side. The food is just OK. The steak burritos were good with large chunks of meat but were on the small size for $8.95. Chips and salsa were good but I like a little more "heat". I ordered a side salad and it was a very nice size using Bibb lettuce. The dressing was supposedly chipotle ranch but the chipotle must have been in a jar in the kitchen, not in the dressing. Margaritas were large and average. Service was great--our waitress checked in at the right times and with the right frequency. Sergio was there busily helping seat people and directing the wait staff to clean tables, check on patrons, etc. We were there on a Thursday eve and on the outside deck there was live music. Steel pan music can be a bit grating, but this was at a nice background volume and didn't hamper conversation while creating a nice setting. When paying the bill, we asked for and were given a bag of chips and a small cup of salsa (at no charge). Total bill for two steak burritos, one side salad, and three margaritas was $43. I just found there's a $5 off coupon on their website. Authentic Mexican? I've never been to Mexico but I think that's Tia Maria's claim to fame. Will we go back? Sergio's was OK for something different (and outside is nice), but when we're looking for really good Mexican food we'll be at el Puente.

This place is just alright. The food isn't great (I love Mexican food but it was too Americanized) but it's decent. The prices are reasonable except on drinks (ridiculously overpriced). The seating outside was nice, the chips and salsa were pretty good and the service wasn't too bad. I'd go if someone else wanted to but I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

Taco Bell with alcohol and a nice deck. This place was gross when it was Potters Place and I think all they did was just repaint the place. You can tell a good Mexican restaurant by there chips and salsa and this was nothing special when I walked in. The chips were straight from a bag and the salsa was pure water. My wife asked for quesadilla and got a deep fried chiloopa. A nice place to sit and have a drink on the deck with a good view of downtown Geneva but don't recommend ordering anything.

Visited on the 4th of July. There was a full house. Chips and salsa were average. Tacos were good. Had to go up to the bar to get refills on our water. Will try again when weather permits sitting outside on their deck.

That is what this place caters to, people who aren't realy mexican food people. It is no different than its predecessor Potter's. White bread suburban fare. Went on a Friday night. Inside was HOT, so we sat outside, which the other person in my party depises. Cry me a river.. It was nice out. LOL They. were. out .of .beer. on. tap! They substituted bottled which was nice but concerning, can you say sudden closure?. The waitress was great, chips and salsa not bad- but as an earlier reviewer said.. I want heat. The food was adequate but bland.

Bought a Groupon for $15 for $30. Margaritas were okay, not bad but not perfect. Fish tacos were also ok, chips and salsa fine as well. Not the best I've been to, but I'm closer to the city. Probably a great place out in that area though, and would be a good place to grab multiple margs. Server was pleasant, but very very slow.

Our first trip here was shortly after opening, and it was "take it or leave it". However, since we've been coming back and it has improved. Great ambiance, good view from the bar. Great place to come for a few drinks and chips and salsa.

Very Good!!! My husband and I went on a Groupon and I will go back and pay full price:) The nachos were good we added guacamole and you could tell it was fresh made. The chips and salsa they give you when seated were good and the salsa was very good. I had the carnita with rice and black beans, I would highly recommend the carnita, it was amazing. My groupon gave us 2 margaritas but my husband prefers Madelo Nigra beer so I drank both Margritas one was Frozen Mango yum yum and the second was Pomegrante on the rocks yum yum!!! Tues and Thurs is 1/2 price Margaritas so I will be going back there for that. My husband had a trio dinner Carnita, steak and Mexican sausage with black beans and rice he also loved his meal:) The place reminds me of the little restaurants you find in Mexico!!! Special props to our waiter Havi he did an awesome job, except he needs to try the carnitas because he said everyone loves it but he had never had it LOL. We will definitely go back:)

Very average, bland food. Good atmosphere and drinks were fine. This place is nothing special and not terrible. The reason I give it 1 star is because we were charged for food we didn't receive. We alerted our server of the issue and she stated she would remove the charges that didn't belong. She then brought us a bill which was 9 cents less than our previous bill. The charge which didn't belong was just a few dollars but paying for service or food not received is not something I am a fan of. Therefore, 1 star for you Sergio's Cantina.

I used to come to Potter's all the time, and went to Sergio's this past weekend when I was back in town visiting the family. Sat at the bar and had drinks and dinner with some friends while watching the Cubs lose to the Pirates in 14 innings... The food was good, but all Mexican food tastes the same to me. The reason for the three stars is simple--I ordered a margarita, and it was out of a TAP! A "Cuervo Margarita" TAP! While it got me surprisingly buzzed, it tasted just like those bottled margarita mixes, bringing back memories of raiding liquor cabinets in high school.

We arrived just before the lunch hour and were the only customers there. Both of us ordered from the lunch menu. The web states $6.50 and the actual cost is $6.99. I ordered the lite Enchiladas. The volume of food was not worth the cost. I received two small barely filled chicken tortillas with red sauce and a squiggle of white sauce which could have been sour cream. On the side was maybe a quarter cup of corn pico. You'd be better off to order the regular Enchiladas and toss the beans and rice. My friend ordered the lite Tacos and received the same size portion. Understandably this is a "lite" version, however a larger portion of corn pico and chicken filling would not have sacrificed the diet. After our first refill of iced tea, the waitress laid down the check quickly and snagged the remaining chips and salsa we had. Apparently we were not allowed additional food or drink. Additional customers arrived but the restaurant was not filled. The waitress ignored us for the remainder of our stay and I finally had to call her to get a lousy glass of water. At the front door there is no separation of the dining from the front door so dress warm as it became quite chilly. Booths are tilted towards the aisle and offer no support for you. It was reminiscent of sitting in a fun house. Watch your step in the ladies bathroom as the drain in the middle sits below the tile level. The website is outdated both in cost and lacking information. There is no recommending this place.

This is somewhat in line with the other reviews. I have always enjoyed my food at Sergios - I've been there several times - but the service is super slow. I went again last week on a Thursday and the waiter just seemed overwhelmed with all of the tables. Drinks were forgotten and at times we ddn't see him for 15 minutes or more, including after our food was delivered. Still, the food is worth it as I really enjoyed my tacos and the fresh guacamole. If you aren't in a rush, go there. If you are, avoid it. Oh, and be sure to have a raspberry Mojito. They are made from scratch and sooooo good there! :)

Had been to Sergio's on Saturday since 2 other options were closed at 3 pm. The guacomole was good and the MaiTais was great! Our group had 3 vegetarians and we found the avocado tostadas were good. Our server was a very nice lady who gave good suggestions and was very prompt. She mentioned that the rice was cooked in chicken stock and offered to replace it with a veg salad.

Food was pretty good - good enough to satisfy my craving for mexican food. My g/f and i shared Queso Fundido to start and then i got a fish taco, chile relleno and an enchilada. all were good and satisfying. Atmosphere was relaxed and casual. Service was gret and friendly. I would definitely return.

This is our family's favorite place to eat! My kids all love the kids quesadilas. The taco salad is so fresh. Some unique dishes to try- cactus salad, shrimp pico (awesome), & mango salsa. I love all the drinks especially skinny margaritas. Great at night too, have gone when there's a DJ or salsa lessons & had great time! The patio is great in the nice weather for lunch & dinner. Great servers, good food. Our favorite!!

I go here a lot when I visit my parents out in Geneva. It's reliably decent food, and some of it is pretty good. It's probably one of the better Tex-Mex type places in the area. (If you're looking for more solidly Mexican food, go to Bien Trucha down the street...if you can get a table.) Everything tastes good, and is satisfying, but nothing is mind-blowing. Great when you're craving simple Tex-Mex. The margaritas are good and strong, and some are 1/2 price on Tuesdays and Thursdays. (I never get house margs because I hate sour mix, but their fruit margs are also half price.) The Cadillac Margarita is pretty darned good, and I think it's only like $8.99, which is cheap for premium liquor. To their credit, they garnish their tacos with cilantro, lime, and chopped onions, the way it should be (no lettuce and dry shredded Cheddar, thank you). The carnitas and asada are both decent. The "lite" menu is actually pretty great. I tried the light flautas, which are really tasty. (Although, to be fair, they're really not flautas at all. They're really more like enchiladas, since they're not deep fried or anything.) The corn and black bean pico is really good. The service can be pretty spotty. The waiters are all teenaged girls in tiny shorts and tank tops. Some do a good job, some are pretty lame. Last night a friend and I went in for dinner, and even though the place was only about half full (and it's not that big), we couldn't get anyone to pay attention to us for almost 10 minutes. Finally the owner came over and asked if we had been helped yet. We told him we hadn't, and he flagged down our waitress and told her to take care of us. We could tell he was annoyed with her. She brought some food to another table and then came by to take our orders. Ordering was a little awkward...she didn't seem to get what my dining partner was asking, so it took a minute to straighten it out. When she brought us chips and salsa, the salsa bowl only had a couple teaspoons in it, so we had to ask for more salsa after 3 minutes. But we couldn't get her attention, so my dining partner had to go find her and ask. There also weren't very many chips, so we had to ask for more of those after a while too. I promise we weren't being moochers...there really wasn't very much there. After that, she only came back to bring us our drinks and food, but didn't check on us at all. We wanted to order more drinks, but she was very obviously avoiding us. I hate flagging down waiters, because it seems rude, but she wouldn't even look over at our table. When she finally did, she pretended not to see us. Finally she came over, and my dining partner ordered another drink, but since we were basically done eating at this point, I didn't get another one. Pretty sure the point is to get your customers to order more, not less. We really were not trying to be high maintenance, and none of our requests was unreasonable. If she was annoyed that we kept going to get her or flagging her down, she should have bothered to come by our table once in a while!

Went there for some drinks and to get a bite to eat and it was good. We opted for the margaritas as it was half price night for those and got some steak tacos. I am pretty sure we will be back.

Thumbs way down! I'll never go back there again. Supposed "Cadillac" Maragrita was the most watery miserable excuse for a Margarita I've ever had (and that's after two decades of squeezing limes up and down the coasts of Florida). Even the voluntary "redo" was nearly as bad. The server forgot to submit my order. (I watched her have another waitress submit it after she was questioned about why I was still waiting), then she ran to the kitchen window and acted like it was their fault. (No tip for that little fool, and this old waitress [me] ALWAYS otherwise tips, and well.) I had to ask for the meal to go and it took three servers to find the "to go" utensils, which would have not even happened if I hadn't checked the bag first. Of course, by the time I got to eat this meal, sitting on the ground at the otherwise wonderful Folk and Storytelling Festival in a nearby park, it was cold...and DRY because, of course, they also forgot the sauces, etc. So this was a LOSER experience all the way around. So my recommendation for Sergio's Cantina is simple: DON'T GO THERE! BTW Are any of these waitresses actually old enough to be serving drinks, much less making them? Didn't see anyone who looked or acted like either a bartender (other than the server doing double duty) or a manager.

Service was very slow, although it could have been the combination of Friday night and an obviously inexperienced waitress. Really wanted to sit on the patio, but that is too much to hope for on a Friday night. Too many people just camp for hours nursing a drink. We sat inside and it was not a good thing. Music was too loud, the patrons were all shouting over it, Yikes! Next time I visit it will be during the week so that I can grab a patio table, and nurse a drink all night! Food was okay, although they advertised $8.99 fish tacos and mine were $11.99??? Must have been for two, not three like I had. They were beer-battered, which I prefer, and quite large. Took half home for lunch. Also had a shrimp cocktail, which was pretty good, with decent sized shrimp. Weird that they serve it with saltines. Use their great chips instead, duh. Back to the service. We were there about 30 minutes longer than we needed to be due to the lack of efficiency. Waited for ten minutes for any step in the meal: Ordering drinks, ordering the appetizer, getting the drinks, etc. Dinner was almost a 30 minute wait for fish tacos and a steak dish. Two cooks were over-matched in the tiny kitchen. Overall not too bad, I've had much better, much cheaper, and much faster. The saving grace was the $25 Restaurant.com coupon that only cost $4. Don't go here on a Friday night if you are planning to get in and out in 30 minutes...plan on an hour to 90 minutes.

Went to Sergios with a group of 9 this past Saturday. There was only one other small group in the entire restaurant. I've been here a few times before and thought it was about a 6 on a scale of 10. Bien Trucha (a truly authentic Mexican restaurant) had a 30 minute wait so we decided to go to Sergios. After this last visit, I will NEVER go back. Our service was absolutely horrible and the food wasnt much better. Our completely clueless waitress left our food under the heat lamp for at least 10 minutes. She walked by it 4 times as if the counter were empty. When I asked if that was our food, she said, "in a minute." When she finally delivered it, it was cold. The rice and beans were horrible, too. Order the fajitas if you want cold shredded beef with mushy peppers. Nothing close to authentic fajitas. My friends were visiting from Texas and I was completely embarassed that I brought them here. Not to mention, she forgot to get my drink and the plates sat on the table well after we were finished. Horrible. Just horrible.

Nice decorations, shitty mexican food. not worth it. seems like the food was made by american's. too expensive, margaritas are made from a mix and not tastey AT ALL. go to bien trucha down the street or tia maria's.

Simply put: this place is bottom of the barrel Mexican that caters to hapless rich suburban folk willing to throw money around at anyplace inside of their comfort zone. The atmosphere was nothing special. The chips and salsa were mediocre at best. The house margaritas that night were devoid of alcohol and it seemed like they were made with a mix (not what I pay $6 for). The fish tacos were... the worst fish tacos I've ever had in my life. Hell, the fish was the worst fish I've had, and I've eaten a lot of fish; it tasted like flavourless fishsticks without the battered exterior. The tacos on the whole were rather bland and dry, mostly due to the fish but also because there was hardly any sauce on there. My girlfriend and I got the check and ditched the place quickly for Swedish food at the nearby fest.

We have been wanting to try this place for some time, after watching the defunct Potter's Place sit empty for quite a long time. When a new place opened, my wife and I were curious, but since we've been burned before with new restaurants, we waited quite a while. We finally went here for dinner. I don't know, I was hoping with so many other Mexican restaurants in the area, this place may try and do something different and better. Not the case. The food is average. Not great, not bad, but OK. I had the Carne Asada, the flank steak was very greasy and I thought the portion was somewhat small. I did like the flavor of the rice, and the refried beans were tasty as well. My wife had the steak tacos, and well, they were steak tacos. Nothing stood out about them. She had a margarita as well, which I thought was overpriced considering the glass was filled with about 90% ice. Compared with the other Mexican restaurants in the area, I put this behind El Puente,Tia Maria's, and of course the infamous Bein Trucha. We'd probably only come here if we eanted some outdoor seating on a nice night or if all of those places were packed. I would like to mention that the waitresses and other help were very attentive and friendly.

sub par for sure. food is bland and drinks suck. the only thing that we really like about it is you can sit outside and we can walk there. if those 2 options weren't available then i would never go back. we gave this place several opportunities and it just disappoints every time.

The food was OK, very small portions. I was very surprised when I ordered a pitcher of Margaritas and the waitress told me that they do not sell pitchers. It just seemed like they are trying to make it a high class Mexican restaurant, which completely takes the fun out of it . The service was extremely slow and the patrons looked like children peering over the freakishly tall tables.

The boyfriend and I have been to Sergio's at least three times since they opened. Overall, we really like it...although there are a couple things that could use improvement. Here's the rundown: Good: Margaritas are tasty and reasonably priced. In fact, the entire menu is reasonably priced, especially considering the downtown Geneva location. We really like the chips and salsa (the salsa is more of the chunky tomato variety vs. somewhere like Tia Maria's where it's a pureed consistency and appears to be made mostly from peppers. I prefer the chunks!). The chicken fajitas were very good, although not served on a sizzling platter. Cheese enchiladas are not on the menu, but they'll make them for you with your choice of rojo or verde sauce (try the verde if you like a tangy sauce - it was pretty darn good!). The boyfriend liked his steak chimichanga, but was less excited about a ribeye dish with peppers and Chihuahua cheese - he said it was too bland and Americanized. None of the dishes I've had have been particularly spicy; but they're also not overly greasy or heavy like many Mex places, which is a big plus in my book. We think the atmosphere is pretty nice - certainly the most modern and best decorated of the "local" Mexican restaurants in the tri-cities area. The bad: The service ranges from decent to forgetful. Most of the girls appear to be local high school kids, which is fine, but they just aren't particularly attentive. Here's the deal - #1, we're going to want more than one basket of chips. So please stop by and check on us; don't wait until halfway through our dinner to ask if we want more chips! #2 - At a Mexican restaurant, I need/want my water glass refilled. Frequently. You'll only get a refill if you ask for it, and even then it takes a while. Also, I know it's winter - but this place needs to turn the heat up! It is freezing in there! Anyway, the positives outweigh the negatives for us when it comes to Sergio's, and we'll be back soon to try out something else on the menu and enjoy a few margaritas!!

Mexican Cuisine

If you enjoy Taco Tuesday, then you have officially fallen in love with the Mexican Food. The main grain of Mexican cuisine is maize. Also known as corn, maize is grown for the past 9000 years after the crop was discovered by the people in Mayan civilization. Mexican empire flourished when they started growing beans, tomatoes, chili pepper, sweet potato and cactus. Till this date these ingredients are used in cooking authentic Mexican dishes and drinks.

Great use of spices, fresh chili pepper dishes like fajitas, tortilla chips, corn chips, salsa, chimichangas, burritos, nachos and quesadillas are invented in America. But when you are looking for authentic Mexican food then you must find a restaurant in the city that serves Rajas con Queso, Garbanzo in a Guajillo Chile Sauce, Pork Filled Chiles Rellenos, Chiles en Nogada, Molcajete Salsa, Pico de Gallo and Frijoles de la Olla. An eye-opening fact – Mexican don't like their food hot. They use fresh chili and other spices to create a flavor that lingers in your mouth.

Mexican food is great for those who are Gluten Intolerant as they use Corn instead of wheat in most of their dishes. Also, you can easily find many beans based Mexican dishes. Another dish which didn't get similar glory as tacos or nachos is the Mexican hot chocolate. If you love something hot on a chilly day, then go for Mexican Hot Chocolate. On merry days, you can enjoy the authentic Mexican Drinks like Tequila, Mezcal, Tecuí, Sotol, Bacanora, Charanda, Posh O Pox, Puebla and Pulque. Mexican Cuisine is for people who enjoy strong drinks and hearty meals.
