A great place to stay in Galena. We had never been to Galena, and this is a great B&B located just outside of downtown. Easy access to everything. The only complaint (and don't knock me for this) is the toilet paper. You would think that with the prices they charge they could afford something better than sandpaper. The meals each morning are awesome. Very well thought out, and they utilize local produce and other items from the area. The antique collection throughout the place is amazing. Such a great place to relax and get away from the cares of the world.

This place is so great. All the amenities with the 1850s charm. They were conscious of gluten free and offered gf crackers (with wine and cheese) and cookies at the end of the night. Im assuming she offered gf breakfast I just never got up that early. A girlfriend and I stayed in the Elisa. Larger 1 bedroom with a queen and day bed. TV, dvd and wifi are offered. There are limited outlets in the room for obvious reasons. If you have a larger vehicle it is a tight squeeze to get to the back parking lot. For my envoy I had to fold in the mirrors. I took at a shower at 4pm and it went from warm to ice cold to scolding hot. I'm not sure if she was doing laundry but I figure if parking and water are the only issues, it was a great experiences. It's about .5 mile from downtown.

If you are looking for the ambiance of a late 1800's Victorian mansion, this is the place to stay. Wonderfully and immaculately decorated in the time period, the house has a wonderful history. Wine, crackers, and refreshments available in the evening. Hot beverages available in the evening and before breakfast. The Breakfast was wonderful and elegant. Hosts are charming and informative. The is quite a gem. Stay during the week for a better rate comparable with a hotel but with much, much, more. .

This is the first time I've ever been to a bed and breakfast so I have no other frame of reference. I can give you a guy's perspective who isn't used to this stuff, but if you want a bed and breakfast savvy lady you probably oughta not keep reading. The house is historic....like every place in Galena, but interesting nonetheless. The place is large and done up in period style, that period being Victorian. You get free roam of the bottom floor, which has a billiard table, library, sitting room etc. It was fun poking around looking at all the various items in the place, although you always feel like you have to whisper. The rooms are likewise done in the same style. We stayed in the Viola room, which I think is a little smaller than the other rooms but still very nice. The owner keeps the place spotless....more than spotless. Its the cleanest place I've ever been in and everything smells nice. The bed was extremely comfortable. The things I didn't like about the place the Missus tells me are normal parts of doing a bed and breakfast. The tv in the room was small, but I guess you're really not there to watch tv. It was a little weird for me staying in a house other people actually lived in. The thing I disliked the most is we never got to sample the breakfast part of the deal. Breakfast was served at 9 and if you didn't go down or aren't a morning person...no breakfast. I do understand the owner shouldn't have to cook a breakfast at my whim but it would be nice if they at least had some pastries or donuts or something out for those that get up later. Even the coffee was gone. The owner seemed like a nice lady but aside from a hi and bye we had no interaction from her. This place is within walking distance to shopping, but its a decent walk with some killer uphills and stairs so if you're not in the best of shape prepare to drive to Main Street and hunt for a parking spot, or go some place closer. I personally prefer a hotel, but I did enjoy my stay. The missus said it was the best B&B she's been to, hence the rating

With my boyfriend and I moving to the west coast at the end of the year,my heart is crushed this place wont just be a three hour drive from us anymore. When I first heard of this place it was during a google search I did at work googling random things "romantic getaway" or "bed and breakfast" or "cute small towns near Chicago". After a ton of searchs and opting the town/B&B that had the most to offer, I chose this place. When you first drive up , you may find the steep hill this rests atop of to be daunting. But once you park and walk up to the front door, you'll be greeted warmly by the Inn's charm. There's a large front yard, closed in gazebo, large front porch with rocking chairs, and an antique Victorian look of the house. One of the inn keepers will greet you and give you the room key. From there (like my bf and I did) you can explore the house and your room before hitting the town only down the street from the Inn. This house has some interesting history for you history buffs or the believers in the paranormal. It used to be owned by a family who used to have the first steamboats in Galena (hence the name) and they used to host balls in the home for the towns elite. How cool is that? The place also used to be a funeral home back in the days. Something I never even thought of since the place is so immaculate and gorgeous, but it did pique my interest in possible paranormal links due to that. When you walk around the house there are a ton of rooms, all super clean and decorated with a warm cozy touch. They have a library, pool room (as in shoot pool not to swim), piano/parlor area, dining room, and reading area. My bf and I found ourselves immersed in the house late at night, either shooting pool, reading in the library or grabbing one of their many dvds to watch upstairs. Upstairs is where the guests stay, they have a third floor (where the ballroom was) but that's closed off for their personal family guests. They have a handful of rooms upstairs all decorated in Victorian style, with one room having a private closed in balcony. This is the room we always got. Our room never even had so much as a speck of dust and was always warm and cozy and private. And their beds? Easily the most comfortable I've slept on. I have an old back injury so sometimes sleeping comfortably requires some effort. Here it was no problem. In the middle of the rooms they have old fashioned chairs and couches laid out like a den for guests to maybe hang out as an option to going downstairs. Char (one of the Innkeepers) also leaves hot tea/cocoa out every night for the guests on the same floor on an old fashioned side table/shelf. It only adds to the cozy factor as you grab a steamboat mug of hot chocolate and go back to your room with your loved one. In the morning you can be promised a full course breakfast from Char that far out beats what Galena's main street offer (I know because I ate at several places on Main St for breakfast). Just to give an idea, one morning we had yogurt with granola and a side of fruit to start, followed by an array of biscuits, fruitta and breakfast meats, with our choice of milk, juice, water, tea, and coffee. Each morning you were promised something different. One morning we started with low sugar coffee cake. Another we started with a fruit ambrosia. Seriously, Char needs to start her own cook book. Where does she come up with these amazing meals?Since I'm a vegetarian they gave me slices of melon and pineapple in substitution of meat (just as a side note). The cool part about breakfast also is that its served in crystal and china. My bf and I would exchange looks of gleeful delight as we passed each other a mini glass pitcher of creamer for our coffee, or scarfed down granola in yogurt in tall crystal glasses as we sipped our coffee on china coffee cups and saucers. This stuff is the real deal. Unless things changed since the last time we went, they also offer cheese, crackers, grapes , sausages and wine (or a gift card to the winery) in the evening. They lay it out on blocks in the foyer with wine glasses. If they don't serve wine but only do the gift cards, they still leave the food out and you can serve yourself and walk around or hang out outside. You feel very spoiled here. The inn keepers themselves are very warm and know a ton of history of their property and galena. Seriously, ask them the history of the property and how the house looked when they bought it. They really have put their heart and soul in the place. I know there are other inns, but this place definitely draws us back each time. Just try it out for yourselves. You can easily book online looking at their availability with their online calendar. Just stay one night and if you like it, come back. You won't be disappointed.

We stayed at Steamboat House for 6 days. We would stay at Steamboat House again in a heartbeat. It is super close to downtown Main St but on a quiet side street. Carol, our host, is friendly, and helpful navigating the Galena area. Our initial plan was to treat ourselves to a big hotel Sunday brunch, but Carol's breakfasts were so good and varied we did not want to miss one! As with many B&Bs, everyone sits at one table for breakfast, don't be shy - introduce yourself and get to know the other guests! We awoke ever morning to the smell of coffee outside our room. The second floor has a lounge outside the guest rooms where you can grab a pre-breakfast cup of coffee. Sip coffee in the lounge and chat it up with other guests (we had a morning pajama party a couple of times) or bring it back to your room. The main floor consists of a billiard room, library, parlor, great hall, and the dining room, all in authentic Victorian décor. Carol serves wine and cheese each evening in the hall around the baby grand piano, an opportunity to share Galena finds with other guests. There is off street parking in back - another bonus.

Nice place to stay, good walking distance to downtown. A cool idea to have wine and cheese at 5pm, it makes the guests come together. Which is nice if you get along with the other guests... Breakfast every morning was ok, and very intimate with the other guests and innkeepers. We are a little more private as a couple so it was kind of awkward, but a nice sentiment. Innkeepers are a little cold personality-wise.

What a beautiful place and it's such a gem in Galena. If you are going to stay at any Bed and Breakfast, make sure you stop by this place at least once to know what it really should feel like. I have made 2 trips to Galena, both times for B&Bs but when I stayed at the Steamboat House, I felt like there was still so much to discover. The innkeeper here handpicked and collected every piece of furniture and remodeled the entire home themselves. Even though I only stayed one night, I really felt like I went back in time again. They even included a little history about the house in a pamphlet that was placed in every bedroom. Breakfast was very memorable because it was served with the finest silverware, glassware and china. Foods were cooked personally by the innkeeper themselves and made up of the fresh ingredients from the market. Great conversations were made and you really feel like the guests of a Clue game, trying to figure out who is from where and what they do. It would be a great place for a Mystery game now that I think about it. Other amenities includes private bath to each room they also provided wine and cheese in the evening and choices of hot beverages like tea and apple cider before bed. The TV in our bedroom was small but you didn't exactly pay the premium to watch old movies. Overall, this place is worth checking out and you will be in awed at the intricacies and decor of this house. Treat yourself to at least one night to feel the elegance and style of this bed and breakfast. When I stayed, there was a promotion to get $10 off if you were a Fan of their business on Facebook. Be sure to check out if there was any other existing promotions on the internet or through Yelp!
