I think this place is under rated. It's definitely more home style country cooking. They said they'd make almost anything gluten free. I had gf Mac and cheese and a pineapple upside down cupcake like dessert. The dessert was a tawdry but hey it's dessert. The Mac and cheese was great My friend had fried chicken. She didn't say a word during dinner so I'm assuming it was good.

Fun family place. Fried pickle appetizer is wonderful.

friendly servers and great prices. Hit the spot

Great place with large portions. We had the salmon salad and the flat steak salmon. Both salads were fantastic, plus the service was quick and courteous. With all of places to eat in Galena, I think we made the right choice!

The food was so great here that we ended up coming to eat here twice during our Galena vacation. My boyfriend was raving out their steak saying it was excellent. Plus it was only $12!The first time I was there I had a BLT sandwich and the second I had a Rueben. Both were good but I think the Rueben was better. They have this really cool garden room near the back. If you can make sure to sit back there. Out waitress was great. She even remembered us the second time we came in.

Overall my experience with Market House Restaurant was positive. I have several food allergies and I'm on the low FODMAP diet, which can be very hard to accommodate. My mom and I shared the seafood trio and we were pleased that they didn't charge us to share. I also ordered the gluten-free bundt cake. It was amazing. Our dinner was pretty good and the biggest reason I'd go back is for the dessert.

It was good. We Ordered a burger and scallops. I loved their creamy cucumber salad and homemade liver pate. Food was fresh and well prepared. Service was good too.

I have no reason to not give this place five stars. I almost felt guilty over our bill being only $28. Atmosphere is casual. Food was great. My wife and I both had the meatloaf special. We will go back.

I had the duck salad (made from Maple Leaf Farms) at the Market House Restaurant in Galena. It was superb, some of the best, juiciest grilled duck I've ever had. This is a good restaurant, you just need to know what to order. If not the duck, the tavern burger or salmon seem like winners. Great service too.

Having been to Galena on many occasions I decided to finally give this place a try. The staff was friendly and the place is clean. I hadn't heard a lot about the place in the past and had no preconceived expectations. The food was good and I can say I enjoyed the experience. I have no raves for it but no major complaints either.

False advertising. Their specialty is crab Louis that has no crab in it and they are so proud of it they serve it with practically everything. The crab Louis salad sounded like it was an actual green salad with some crab Louis on top, but it ended up being one big piece of romaine with many scoops of the crab Louis covering it. Imagine a giant plate of 5 ice cream scoops of mayo covered fake crab. Overwhelming. The chicken salad was a step down from Applebee's. (and we are not Applebee fans.) Their home-made potato chips that the server encouraged me to get weren't anything special either. Some were overly brown and lacking in seasoning. I'll pass. My daughter had the mac n' cheese with bacon and it ended up being the best thing on the menu. Do yourself a favor and keep walking. There's someplace way better!

We were sadly surprised how down hill this place has gone. We went here about 3 years ago and loved it. It was a small, quaint place with excellent service. The menu was small with the chefs available selections, the steak and chicken was home made and delicious. Unfortunately when we returned yesterday, the menu was full of fried food choices. Pretty sure their kitchen consists of a fryer and a microwave. The menu had too many words itemizing every item with its additional cost, even every topping for a burger. We got the beer cheese soup, it tasted like condensed soup from a can. The mozzarella sticks looked straight from the freezer to microwave to plate. We were so disgusted we didn't even finish, left and ate dinner elsewhere.

Friday night Fish Fry! All you can eat! Peggy was the server and she was fun and excellent! Homemade tartar sauce!

Service was not very good. Place was not full yet waitress seemed to be slow getting to few tables that has people at them. Many other better choices in city.

Hidden gem! Came in for the weekend from Chicago for the weekend and tried this place. Food was excellent and staff super friendly. Decor way out of date, but charming cozy atmosphere. Don't go if you are looking for a chain restaurant, but if you want something authentic with character you won't be disappointed!

This place has some good burgers and a few unique side. Duck tenders jumped out at me. A chicken tender made out of a duck. I actually prefer them to chicken and wish more people had them. We also ordered some jalapeno rings. No cream cheese, just simple slices of breaded jalapeno. They were good. My blue bacon burger required a bit of dexterity to eat, but it had a great flavor and is cooked to order. The fries were fairly forgettable and I passed up most of them to ensure the burger received its due. Beer is only domestic bottles so Bud I guess. Served in a frosted glass.

Went for lunch and found an average meal. Started very kid friendly with server ready with booster seats, crayons, and a sippy cup. Lunch special was crab louis salad; tried it as a melt and it was just okay. Good marble rye bread but crab was krab surimi and its just okay. It was interesting that it was topped with walnuts and craisins though. Fried dill pickle spears, as an app, were pretty good.

I ordered the "whole order" of Crab Louie, which was a mistake. Not good at all - like a Miracle Whip base with some tasteless fake crab. Few in my party of eighteen enjoyed their meals. A real disappointment for us...

we just had a family reunion dinner for 30 individuals - ages 2-70. They were so accommodating and the food was very good. So happy that I chose this location to bring the family together. Thank you!

Good spot. Good specials. I'd especially recommend for lunch (over dinner). Great Bloody Mary special on Saturdays!

I had lunch today at the Market House Restaurant in Galena. This is a pleasant, laid back restaurant that has been around since 1982. The quality of the food is good with notable dishes being the Crab Louis salad, the Portabello Mushroom soup, and Terry's Homemade Meatloaf. What I especially like about the restaurant is it's location halfway up cobblestone Perry Street from Main Street, just below the Stockade. The back dining room of the restaurant has impressive limestone and brick walls. There are the wildlife photographs of Thomas Mangelsen on the walls.

Good service, pleasant atmosphere and solid American food. Some items were very good - chicken soup with home made dumplings, creamy cucumbers, goulash special. Other items just average.

Overall, was underwhelmed by the food in Galena, but this was a treat! Everything we ordered was good, and they had $4 glasses of wine, so that's always a plus.

I have been eating here for many years and I always have the Crab Louis

We have been patronizing the Market House Restaurant for years and have recommended it to many a Galena traveler when we owned a guest house in Galena. The food and the service is exceptional. If you are looking for reasonable cost, home made style food, with a full bar, this is the place to go in Galena. Nice sized portions, very well done dishes....the duck salad is my favorite...I have never tasted duck so plump and juicy. Their deserts are to die for. My goodness don't miss this little restaurant on the second floor in Main Street...nice and quiet.

I stumbled upon the Market House Restaurant during a weekend trip to Galena with the BF. There are so many restaurant options there - many well-publicized - that it would be easy to walk right by this place (especially since it's accessed by two somewhat hidden stairwells). I'm so glad we tried it out! We started with Bloody Mary's which were delicious. Nothing too fancy with the garnish (pickle and olive) - they let the yummy house-made mix speak for itself. I went with the reuben sandwich, which was amazing. Juicy, tender, thick-cut corn beef. They didn't go overboard with the thousand island and I thought it all struck a nice balance. It was served with a delicious German potato salad (although I can't say that's something I eat that often so not sure how this one compared). The BF had the crab louie salad - a house specialty - and it was very good. He added walnuts and craisins on the side as suggested by the waitress and those actually added some unexpected and tasty flavor and texture. Overall, a great spot if you're in Galena. Like I said, there are a lot of restaurants in town with a larger advertising budget, but that doesn't mean their food is better. Give this place a chance - you won't regret it!

Alcohol selection wasn't very good. Portions were rather large. Pate was nice. Overall tasty stuff but not out of this world. What pushes this from a 3 to a 4 is the amazing prices. We had a 6$ (lunch) and 10$ (dinner) meal (same but with salad and pate') totaled under $30 with 2 drinks and a generous tip. I didn't see a better value for a meal in town. The ladies serving were nice too.

My family and I decided to check out this restaurant while visiting galena and overall it was alright. I ordered the Reuben sandwich, which was very good (they make their own homemade corn beef there) but then it was served with a German potato salad that was mediocre...fries would have made a much better side! While we were able to get a table fast (pretty rare for galena), I was disappointed with the service of our waitress. She was not too friendly, slow, and seemed like she had too many tables to wait on. All the other employees were very friendly and helpful though.

This was the first place we stopped upon arrival in Galena. The food was great. I had the Ruben sandwich and hubby had Tavern burger. Both were very good and tasty. Our waitress Rose was very polite and very helpful. We will definitely be back!

Best Reuben I've had in quite a while! The German potato salad was a little too vinegary for my taste. But I would highly recommend a trip there.

This restaurant was a little set back from the main street up a flight of stairs but was worth in. We sat in the front room full of plants and windows. The service was very good as well as the food - very reasonably priced.

This was a wonderful place to eat. The waitress, Rose, was fabulous. The meal was huge. Two meals, appetizers and drinks $35. The pate and crackers was good. We wanted the mud slide desert but no room after the meal. It's a small homey place.

The service was very nice and they get some good karma for all the charity involvement, on humanity and philanthropy they get 5 stars, but this review is on the food... The food was a little lackluster. First, there needs to be some more appetizer options that don't emerge from the deep frier. Sure it tastes decent, but who wants to spend the night sweating out oil; it's not like the rest of the menu is on the "light" side of the calorie counter. I had the fried duck fingers. I love duck and typically order it when it's on a menu. I don't doubt what they served was duck, but it tasted EXACTLY like chicken. I had the meatloaf since people have mentioned it. I have never had meatloaf that was actually sweet before. I'm "middle class" so I've eaten my fair share of homemade meatloaf, and I've never encountered a sweet one before; it's supposed to be a savory dish. My cucumber salad was just cucumber, raw onions, raw cabbage, and seasoned mayo - I could have passed on that. However, the mashed potatoes and gravy was outstanding, probably the best item on the table My companion had the grilled chicken salad. First, the lettuce was was pretty bland, and not a mix of different varieties. The raspberry dressing was gooey, like the consistency of okra when it's made into a soup! It also didn't have much depth beyond the sweetness. I don't remember what the chicken was like, but that doesn't speak well for it... She also ordered a watermelon cocktail that had absolutely no hint of watermelon in it. The strawberry rhubarb pie was quite good. All in all: meh

Market House is the BOMB! Four of us had lunch and everything was great! The service was outstanding. I had the duck breast sandwich and I will order it every time I go there. This will be our go to restaurant in Galena. Oh... the drinks were also quite tasty!

We chanced upon this little gem, as our starving selves couldn't wait 30 minutes for Fried Green Tomatoes to open. I'm so glad we did! We started off with almond-crusted fried duck tenders. Sounds a little strange, but it was delicious. Props for a creative menu item. They also did not skimp on the mushrooms in my brother's Creamy Portabella soup. My Flat Iron Steak was a great value - it came with the Crab Louis salad, sweet potato fries, and a slice of garlic bread - all for $10! Get it with grilled onions and portabella mushroom - yum...! Everything else we had was equally appetizing - Cabarnet-marinated burger and Crab Louis Melt. We also tried the Mud Slide for dessert - it was good, but I preferred the appetizers and entrees. Service was thougtful. Two of us were sharing the burger and our server brought it out sliced in half on 2 plates without being asked. She also brought extra spoons with my brother's soup in case we wanted to try it, and gave us an extra scoop of ice cream with our mud slide so that we had a scoop each.

I really liked this place for the simplicity of its food and its good service. Our wait staff was attentive, but gave us our privacy. I really liked the homemade ranch dressing, and beer and cheese soup. My veggie burger was pretty decent, as was the Mud Slide. A good view of Main Street, without being too noisy.
