I decided to take my girlfriend on a get away weekend to Galena and since it was Colorama, the choices were sparse but Annie W. had a few rooms available. The guesthouse is close to downtown and sits next to the Belvedere Mansion. It has seven guest rooms as well as a parlor and dining room. The house (built in 1846) definitely feels a little threadbare. We reserved the India room and the third floor room came with no curtains (except for a creepy baby dress that partially covered two panes of glass). The room was clean but definitely small. As it's an old house with old furnishings, everything (and trust me, I mean everything) creaks with any movement. If you have neighbors, you might as well as apologize in advance for the noise you will be making. The hotelkeeper, Wendy, is cordial and welcoming. The breakfast served was adequate (if not a tad undercooked). In a pinch, I would consider staying here again but I feel there are better furnished, larger B&Bs in the area that I would rather stay at.

Room was clean but very cold. We had heater on but did not adequately heat room. Windows had no curtains and all night long had bright lights shining in from the city. We covered our curtains with our bathtowels and pinned them up with thumbtacks we found but it still didnt work well. the bed was very hard and we tossed and turned and woke up with our backs hurting. Shower had hot water and breakfast was good although we did not find the hostess extremely personable, she didnt say much about galena or ask us much. Breakfast was not served till 9am which is kind of late and by the time breakfast is over we had to hurry up to pack our stuff. the cleaning lady (not the owner/hostess, they hired help) came in and we were not ready yet, it wasnt her fault though she didnt know. the checkout time is a bit early considering breakfast at 9. We expected more chatter from our hostess/owner but maybe she has had enough chatter after many years. Breakfast was nice but at this price we'd have done better staying at a budget motel such as comfort or country inn and just gone out for breakfast. It was nice to stay in a central location in downtown galena but for the price i wouldnt do it again.... just my $0.02

A charming B&B just off the strip in Galena, IL. Our hostess greeted us in full Victorian costume (but not in a cheesy way). The sitting room on the first floor is quaint and has a number of interesting touches, including the old-school 3-D viewing glasses. Unfortunately our room was on the very top floor which meant we climbed A LOT of stairs in our three days there. Our room was small and intimate, with a large tub, a faux fireplace, and a large, high bed. While a standard window air conditioner looks a bit out of place in a room like that, we appreciated having temperature control. Great bedding, with a truly glorious comforter that we both wanted to take home. A few shortcomings in the room: no curtains (hello world!), nowhere to put our clothes, limited toiletry surface area. Also the room door had some significant gaps that allowed passerby's a relatively easy view inside. We spent a lot of time on the back porch overlooking the backyard and enjoying the sound of the fountain and the view of the giant Belvedere mansion next door. It was a calm, quiet place to read and relax. Breakfast was enjoyable both days we had it. Our hostess, Kathy, sat and talked with us the second day when we were the only ones there. She's a delightful woman and had some interesting stories about the area to share. She has a wealth of information about Galena. Overall we enjoyed our stay but in our universe of B&B's Annie Wiggins sits squarely in the middle.

We stayed in Sara's room which listed "Romantic, serene, private and charming. Sara's room features....private entrance, screened porch" as the description. The porch was not screened and served as the primary spot for everyone else in the house to gather at 8 am for coffee. We were woken up both mornings of our stay by rude guests who literally sat less than a foot away from the non-insulated windows speaking and laughing loud enough to not only wake us up but also made it impossible to enjoy anything since all we could hear was them. I politely informed the other people that the room was occupied and asked them to please refrain from repeating their actions the following morning. This was done in the presence of the innkeeper who later claimed she did not hear it. The following morning was the same with three very loud couples sitting immediately outside our room at 8 am. At $155 per night with a minimum 2 night stay I expect quiet and private especially when the room description uses the word 'private' twice. Sunday morning I was so frustrated by the false advertising and rude neighbors I left I tears. When my man went to return the key, Wendy, the innkeeper, gave him an attitude and snarkily said 'thanks for the heads up you aren't staying for breakfast.' I called Wendy after learning this and explained I had a terrible experience and we didn't stay because I was in the car CRYING. I also stated I did not appreciate that the description for the room said private porch area and she said no, private entrance. She thanked me for explaining and that was all. We did not get the romantic getaway we paid for and this experience all but ruined my birthday weekend. Galena is amazing. Annie Wiggins is horrific.

I took my boyfriend here for his birthday. It was both of our first times staying in a B&B. Some people may not prefer the idea of being in one house with other couples and seeing them in the living room, sitting next to everyone at breakfast, etc. But I loved the experience! We stayed in the Lizbet room. It was clean, well decorated and very cozy (low ceilings). The bed/pillows/sheets were extremely comfortable. The fireplace and bathtub in the room were very romantic. We didn't like that it's difficult to sleep past 6am because the windows have no curtains. I loved the breakfast but my boyfriend didn't feel the same. The porches and outdoor area are lovely. The free wifi doesn't have a password but only works spottily. The inkeeper was friendly. I hope to have a chance to come back soon!!
